Broken Laptop Screen Hinge

Q: Broken Laptop Screen Hinge

Hello, I have a 2013-2014 , can't remember the exact year without going and pulling the receipt. However, over the last year I have been having a bunch of issues with the hinge holding the screen to the computer. I took it to a shop and when they took it apart they said the hinge is busted inside and I would need to replace the screen. I am wondering if I can just buy a hinge and replace that?? Thank you!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The hinges on my cousin's HP Pavilion ZV 6000 laptop have been broken and cracked for awhile. (One is broken, the other is cracked.) A few minutes ago he powered on the laptop only to find that the screen is completely black.

We're figuring that there must be a connection between the damaged hinges and the black screen.

We would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has an idea as to exactly what the problem is and how to go about fixing it.

Thank you.

The left hinge casing on my laptop came off and was lost, and the black, plastic case for the screen is cracked and seperates from the screen when closing and opening the laptop. If there is a fix, I need it to be done quickly (I will pay for expedited shipping). I'm not sure if I have a warrantee on the laptop, it was a gift. The laptop is an envy m6. Any help would be appreciated.

This issue is with any brand of notebook.Human tendency is to use our left hand to tilt the screen which working and the normal place whish we use to tilt is the left bottom corner of screen. The right place to use is the center top edge but we dont. Hence the issue is with all notebook and due to wrong handeling. You will have to take the unit to an authorized service center or call HP to setup a service.

Sorry if this isn't a Windows 7 OS/Program issue, but this is kinda disturbing me,

So I was making my bed about 2 weeks ago, and I take my laptop and put it on my chair. When I was done with that I lightly toss my laptop onto my bed (like 2 inches above my bed), and when it lands I hear a loud CRACK. I pick up my laptop and look at it to see if its broken from somewhere, and I saw nothing wrong, so I continued using it. Later when I actually put it on my lap, the screen falls back, which it never ever does. I try putting it back to the way it was before and it didnt stay like it would. Kept falling back. I check both sides of the laptop and I see that one of the hinges was misplaced/broken, and the cover pieces next to the hinge were separated. I try putting them back together, but whenever I place the monitor back or move it back the cover pieces don't say together.

So uh, I can give pictures tomorrow if needed, but for now can anyone give me some solution to fix this?

Regards,
-Nide

Open and Administrative command prompt, type in "magic-powder-fixaroo" will instantly fix any physical problem with the hardware!

On a more serious note. You'll most likely need a replacement either the full screen assembly of just of the hing itself.

Hiya, I've had this laptop approximately 3-4 years or so and never had any real problems, however about 3/4 of a year ago one of the hinges became quite badly damaged. I normally use my laptop to connect to other monitors so it's never been a significant issue as of yet and I didn't want to fork out for a repair cost (unfortunately, it's no longer under warranty). However my usage is changing and I do need to be more mobile with it. I did a fair bit of Googling and I've noticed a number of people had a similar problem to me, however I didn't manage to find a fix for the problem. Because of the damage I literally cannot move the laptop up or down without fear of it snapping, and even then the hinge is completely out ofn place. I can push it back in - which I do - however it almost instantly pops back out again. Does anyone know what the best idea would be to go about fixing this? Is it a do-it-yourself problem, or would it be best to get it repaired?  Any advice is appreciated. I can also post a picture of the hinge if it's helpful. Cheers,Adam

I have had my hp envy since September 2014 and have been satisfied with it until the right hinge started separating and now its gotten me worried since I can it separating where the cd-rom drive is a little bit even though the cd-rom drive is still usable. I am still in warranty and with a Hp care pack that I paid for with purchase of the laptop. Currently I am not in any position to pay to get this fixed as I have seen plenty of posts and comments not just here on the hp forums but elsewhere that people have had to pay a couple hundred dollars just to get this fixed. I hope I can get this fixed with minimal fuss.

Hello,My HP Envy laptop is experiancing a problem with the left hinge/fan. The hinge is very loose and now I can't even open it properly. This laptop was NEVER dropped or mishandled as it sat on my desk at home almost all the time. Their is a gap in the casing now and it is interfering with the fan. This laptop is barely a year old and has software from my college installed on it. I can't afford expensive repairs. This laptop worked perfectly fine before this hinge started coming apart. This appears to be from a defective design, I'm surprised their hasn't been a recall. It seems other people on the forums have experienced a similar problem and was wondering if an HP Rep. could reach out to me.

My HP ENVY Sleekbook 6-1010us has a broken hinge on the left side, the hinge used for opening the screen. Now, whenever I open the laptop, the screen becomes detached from the bottom and is held together by some wires and god knows what else. I then have to "re-assemble it", essentially. This worries me because it seems that it may break at any given moment. The damage is very surprising given that this occurred only through simple wear and tear from general use. I currently have a one year factory warranty on my sleekbook, and am wondering what I can do to get it repaired. Thanks.

A:Laptop "hinge" is broken and needs replacement

Hi, The chances of it being repaired under warranty by HP are slim, considering the type of damage. It certainly wouldn't hurt to ask. You can also  have it repaired by a HP authorized notebook shop. If you feel confident enough and willing to accept the risk of damaging your sleekbook, then you can repair it yourself. -erico

Hello. I have a Hp Envy m6-1105dx laptop that I've had for around 3 years now. I've always taken care of it and never drop it but a few months ago I noticed a crack on the bottom of the left hinge that has slowly gotten worse. Now the screen is barely holding on the left hinge and my screen is starting to glitch out. My warrenty is well over but I've looked it up and saw that many other people have had this same issue. Classes are going to start next week so I'm not sure what I can do, as getting it repaired is too expensive for me right now. Like I said it just started falling apart out of nowhere and the plastic has cracked and fallen apart. What should I do?

I see there are quite a few similar searches from other people who encountered this issue. It is disappointing because I take great care of my laptop and it is in overall great condition other than the broken hinge.

I purchase my Envy laptop back in 2014-February with Windows 8.1 Pro and have had a few issues since. The first issue is super long reboot times. The duration did shorten by a few minutes when I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, but it is still completely unusable for about 20 minutes. The CPU stays pegged at 100% and the only thing that seems to be running is System. I have tried disablng all extra programs from running at startup, yet the problem persists. Sometimes I will even have this issue if I dont use the machine for a week.  I have the I7-4700, 12 GB of RAM, and a 1TB 5400RPM drive. I have thought seriously about upgrading to an SSD with the fasted write times, but havent wanted to spend the money yet. Is there a setting or something that could be causing this issue? My second, and super frustrating issue, is that last week the hinge next to the power button has decided to seize up and has bulged out of the case, thus breaking the clips between the top and the bottom of the case. For now, I am just leaving the laptop in the open position as there is a lot of carnage going on with that side of the laptop when I try to close it. Is this a known issue and does HP have a fix for this?

I had purchased this laptop, HP Envy M6-1090ee in August 2012. Soon after my warranty expired, the left hinge of the laptop started cracked and the screen frame too were affected because of this. Since I had to move between countries for short periods, I couldn't do anything about it. Until June 2014, when I contacted the HP service centre. After quite a few discussions regarding this issue, they decide to repair it for me. The repair was done and the machine didn't have any issue for a year. After which the same issue started cropping up. I have a HP case ID no. for the last service, that was given for the last repair. Any assistance regarding this will be highly appreciated and of a great help. Thank youAlex Robert

I purchased a HP Pavillion G7-2246NR Laptop with a 17.3 inch screen from Office Depot on Nov. 26, 2012.

The computer worked great until about a month ago when the left hinge seemed to be coming loose.  All I use this computer for is to surf the net at night while we watch TV so it rarely gets used.

Now the hinge has completely came out of the case and it has apparently  caused damage to the power button.  The computer will not power up at all.

I certainly believe this computer that I rarely use should have lasted more than a year and a half.  Is there a recall or some sort of free repair for these clearly defective units?

Please contact me for a solution,
Sybil [Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums. I am sorry to inform you that your post has needed some editing to remove personal information.]

Hello @SFKervin , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand the hinge has broken on your notebook and it no longer turns on. It's possible that the chassis has separated preventing the power button from making contact with the power button board below. The simplest solution would be to replace the hinge. You can find detailed instructions on how to replace the hinge here: HP Pavilion g7 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide on page 57. You can order a replacement display hinge kit by searching the part number 682746-001 and the display hinge covers with part number 682747-001 (if needed) online from many retailers like Amazon, eBay, or the HP Part Surfer web store. Regarding any recalls you can see a list of active recalls for HP on the following website: Replacement programs and product recalls. Hopefully this helps!

In 2012 my mother and I both purchased the HP Pavillion g7 17.3 in screen laptops at different times. She purchased hers from Office Depot and I purchased mine from Walmart. About 2 months ago her laptop stopped closing properly and we noticed that the left hinge had dislodged from its intended position. A few weeks later her screen started to go out as well. We replaced the top cover and fixed the hinge but the screen is still unresponsive.  Two days ago, I noticed that my laptop started having the same problem and I find it very odd that both computers purchased from different locations and same "Pavillion g7" have the same casing malfunction. I have done a lot of research on this issue and there have been quite a few people with the same issue with their computers. Why has there not been a recall on this issue or at least HP should offer customers replacement parts for the known problem. I am very disappointed because I have always had HP laptops and printers but if the quality of these products are like this now, I may have to switch to a different brand. I hope someone can figure out what is going on and help with this situation.  Thanks

I've seen some similar posts for slightly older laptops, but I've got a hinge issue with my g7 2240us, bought in December 2014. The left hinge seems to have come loose, and a tab with a screw that is part of the hinge now pushes up on the casing of the laptop about half an inch high.  Not to mention the laptop will not fully close.  Any suggestions?
