Preferred Solution: netlogon service is not started

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am unable to access shared files on a Win 2000 Pro machine from a Win 98 machine. The Microsoft Support site deals with the problem but I get an error message when I attempt the fix to start NetLogon. "Windows could not start the Net Logon on Local Computer .... refer to service specific error code 3095."

Q? Is Net Logon not on W2K Pro?

BACKGROUND (pasted from Microsoft Support site.)

This article was previously published under Q262916
SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to connect to a Microsoft Windows 2000 computer over the network, you may receive one of the following error messages:

You must supply a password to make this connection:
Resource: \\computername\IPC$

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Netlogon service is not started on the Windows 2000 computer.

RESOLUTION
To connect to the network share, follow these steps:
1. In Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Component Services.
2. Right-click the Netlogon icon, and then click Start.

MORE INFORMATION
This issue affects only Windows 9x computers. Computers running Windows NT and/or Windows 2000 are able to connect when the Netlogon service is turned off.

I have a DHCP domain and some of my PC's are unable to logon to the domain I receive netlogon service not running. I go into service and try to manually start the service and I get an error -- "the dependancy service or group failed to start."

A:Netlogon service

If the machines are unable to get an IP address from the DHCP server, the netlogon service will not start. Check the TCP/IP properties on the client machines and make sure they are setup for DHCP. Also, try doing ipconfig /release & renew.

I have an NT 4.0 server that will not allow ANYONE to log in. All get a message saying the netlogon service is not running so the system cannot log them in. I had exactly the same problem with a Windows NT 4.0 workstation. The solution that Microsoft gives is to install Service Pack 6 but you can't do that if you can't log in, can you?
What I had to resort to doing is reinstalling Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, leaving the data intact but that can cause more problems then it is worth as programs lose registry keys and may stop working.
If you have a backup of your data on the Server, the best is to reinstall Windows NT Server and wipe all data while reinstalling.
The Netlogon service will work once reinstalled.
Unfortunately, I found no way to bypass the logon.
If you find out another solution, I would love to know.

I recently encountered a problem on the networking of Win 7 professional. My laptop is installed with Windows 7, 64bit, with Service Pack 1.

I have shared some local folders via my home WLAN so I can access the files while using my other devices in living room, bedroom, and etc. It's been going quite well, until one night last week. I couldn't access my local files thru WLAN. It kept saying that
User login information is not correct but I've double checked that user name and password are both correct. Besides, the sharing settings of my local folders are all the sam as they were.

Based on my poor IT knowledge, I checked services running on my laptop and found Netlogon service shows "Manual" and stopped. I tried to change it back to "Automatic" and then started it. Then a dialogue box poped up saying: "The
netlogon service on local computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do". And the service stopped.

And after I restarted my laptop, I found the Netlogon service was again switched back to "Manual". And I repeated the previous steps but it kept showing that message. I restarted the computer several times and it's still the same.
I didn't install any softwares last week before the problem occurred, except the Windows update KB4480907 and KB2808679. And the laptop have been running very normally since last December, with no blue screen or forced shut-down.

A thread from last year (5/2001) that the best fix is to reinstall the OS and install SP6. My problem is that SP6 is already installed on the server. I am concerned that the reinstall/fix will delete software (obviously a great concern) and it is specialized surveillance software that I am unfamiliar with. The server doesn't act as a file server but rather as the security utility operator.

Please help.

Thank you.

A:Netlogon Service NOT running BUT has SP6

Reinstalling the Service Pack will not damage any files, just replace any damaged ones that the service pack has.

Reinstalling the OS will kill all your settings and reset the registry, so you would have to reinstall all the programs again.
Can you start it manually?

Is there an event in the event viewer that might give you a little more to go on?

A:Missing Netlogon Service

Looks like the registry entries got deleted:
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanworkstation

You could do a system restore, or if you are comfortable editing the registry import them from the registry of another PC running XP and restart windows (probably easier).

Hi. A week ago, my computer got hijacked with the about:blank. I used several spyware removers, and was able to remove and reset my IE. The problem I now face is that whenever I restart my computer, a new hardware detected "Workstation NetLogon Service", and it's wanting to install on my computer.

I have read all I can about Workstation NetLogon Service. I do not have it installed on my computer, so I can't disable or stop it under Services Management. I believe it's connected to the about:blank hijack, because before then I didn't have this hardware detection. I can't delete the hardware because it's not actually installed.. I don't know what to do.

A:About:Blank & Workstation NetLogon Service

As you have read the Net logon service "Supports pass-through authentication of account logon events for computers in a domain."
This is usually installed by default on a Windows XP computer but
is set to manual start. If it were installed you could go to Start, Run, type
cmd and then type net stop netlogon and it would stop the service.

It maybe this virus and may have added the entry in the Registry.

I would recommend making sure that Windows is up to date and running
the Trend Micro online virus scan if you have broadband.

As I am typing this Microsoft Management Console popped up on top of the firewall blocking my view into the properties of this rule, and I am unable to close it.. I do remember that the process is lass or something like that though..

Any help on this would be great?

Has anyone seen this?

Greetings,

I am just trying to hammer out the issues I find in event viewer. Here is one of them:

Event ID: 3095
This computer is configured as a member of a workgroup, not as a member of a domain. The Netlogon service does not need to run in this configuration.

I am, indeed, a part of a workgroup and NOT a domain. What could the Netlogon service do for me as apart of a workgroup as opposed to a domain?
This took place while I was sitting in front of the computer but I have no idea what would cause this error. Any ideas?

A:Event Viewer - Netlogon service error

It may be configured to start automatically in Services, and can't start and complains. If it is not running and you have no problems, then just keep it from trying to start in the first place.

Go to Start, Run, services.msc and scroll down to the Net Logon service, right click, Properties, set Startup type to manual or disabled, OK.

I am working on a windows XP pro SP3 DELL Optiplex 740 desktop with 1GB RAM and 250GB HDD. I just did an OS repair using an OEM boot disk from DELL. I am trying to log on to the domain of my company and i keep getting an error

I can log in locally but when i do, an army of dll errors pop up. I have attached a printscreen of the error messages.

I have also attached a print-out of the ipconfig /all command at the cmd.

I have visited microsoft's forum and searched out the error and have corrected the registry for netlogon service to run on DNS and on TermService. Both were not helpful.

This message has started to appear in a small window on the desktop upon bootup (the '!' is in a yellow triangle). That's all it says, with an "OK" button on the bottom of the window. I click OK, there is another window saying the same thing, I click OK again, and the system seems to finish booting with no problem and runs fine. So, how do I know what services haven't been started and why this is now popping up?

By the way, this seems to only happen with a cold boot. If I do a restart, it boots without those messages.

I am running XP SP2.

Thanks, all.

I think this was "Application information" service.
The problem is that now I can't run app called TurboService Manager to backup, services.msc, regedit, elevated cmd to use "net start", msconfig, even *.reg files won't launch. I can't launch Safe Mode through metro because my USB mouse and keyboard disconnectsat the momnet I should choose "4".
How inextricable and mazy Windows became that one service, which is not protected from disabling could cause such headache. Anyone has ideas how to turn it back on?

For starters you need to download and run Malwarebytes, then do an online scan with SUPERantispyware. Once you run those and remove anything that they find, then run a scan with HitMan Pro.

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Hello,

I'm new to this forum, but I was just wondering if anyone could me with a problem that I had?
1st of all my friend dropped my laptop HP Elitebook 8440P and after turning it I noticed the laptop was going really slow, the sound was weird and glitchy so I uninstalled lots of programs and downloaded a handy script called "Tron" (ow.ly/LtPoY) to try and fix the problems. I ran "Tron" in safe mode and as Admin. When it completed I restarted my laptop to notice it wasn't slow any more and the sound worked perfectly but then I noticed that I couldn't open most programs. When trying to open a program it's comes up with the error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it." so after doing a bit of research people said I had to enable Windows Installer in services.msc but I couldn't open that nor could I open Command Prompt as Admin (comes up with the error). So then I tried starting in safe mode but it just hangs forever at aswrvrt.sys . I looked up what it was and it's part of Avast but I can't uninstall Avast. I'm so stressed I was about to sell this laptop and now I don't know what to do. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I just went through the process of cleaning out some malware and now I'm just putting things back together. The Action Center indicates that the Service Center service needs to be started. When I click on the link in Action Center, I get a pop-up telling me "Windows Security Service can't be started."

My first thought was to open windows services and start Security Center from there as well as check on it's status...Disabled, Manual or Automatic. While viewing windows services, it appears Security Center is not present. I also notice Windows Firewall is not listed as well. So, I'm thinking that some registry keys have been effected some way. Does anyone know how to go about repairing this?

This morning I was unable to access either safe mode or normal mode via normal login username and passwords. The same for the Adminsitrator account. I can only get into normal mode via a biometric fingerprint scanner.

Once in windows I am unable to access and service, application or task that requires some adminastrive privelidges. I can not run reg edt, services, msconfig. I can run CMD but not as Administrator. I can access the web but can not install any programs I download.

I've tried using a couple of password hacks and think I must have viewed a few hundred posts whilst trying to resolve this issue. Unfortunately they all assume the ability to get to the UAC, be able to change a password or get administrator access. I can not.

All scans for rootkits, malware etc come up blank. My cd drive won't work and I dont have a installation or repair cd thanks to a recent move.

So, after 11 hours, any help welcome!. No pressure!.

Regards.
Nobby.

Something very annoying and interfering was happening. The system service Appinfo was involved. Just what was happening is irrelevant to the current problem. I read the brief description of Appinfo and realized it can be involved in many processes but it was the only clue I had. I wanted to stop it, just for a couple of minutes, to see if anything improved.

The system cannot stop Appinfo, at least through the means I know how to use. Its start up is "Manual" but when the computer was booted, it was already running as quickly as I could get to Task Manager. Therefore I set it to "Disabled" and rebooted the computer.

I can still get online and many applications will run but many other things will not work. One of these that will not work is any access to control of Services. I cannot restart Appinfo. Another thing that will not run is Regedit, so even if I knew what to change, I could not get to it that way.

I tried running Repair Windows, booting to the Windows OS DVD. The only thing there that seems to offer any hope is to restore to an earlier Restore Point. I suspect that would fix this problem but it would be more than a little inconvenient for what else it would undo.

I attempted the fix described on this page.
Services - Restore Default Services in Windows 7
While there is no "merge" right click option, the default program for that file type is already Registry Editor. I tried double clicking on the file, which is a common way of getting... Read more

I'm running Windows XP Pro Service pack 3 with all the latest updates.
I've been using MS Security Essentials to protect my machine along with
PCTools free personal firewall and Malwarebytes free.

Unfortunately, my family uses the machine as much as I do, so I can't be
sure that they stay away from bad sites or bad downloads.

Today I ran the MS Sec.Ess. scanner (full scan) on the machine. About half way
through the scan, PCTools popped up a message telling me that a service
was trying to attach to the kernel:
"\Registry\Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MpKsl0fc1f74d"

I'm concerned because I've never seen this before and it has an odd name. Can
you help me figure out if I am infected?

Thanks, richardjh

the windows security center service was disabled and couldn't be started, i tried to turn it to automatic in services.msc a million times but it turns back to disabled.
obviously its a virus/malware(which redirects the browser too).
i have MSE, but it is also not starting in normal mode. this is what i have done so far......

started the computer in safe mode, scanned with mse, a file was found, it was removed..... but problem wasn't solved.

then read somewhere on the net, about malwarebytes, scanned with it, 4-5 infections found, removed(i have the log files).

then scanned with superantispywhere, 9 infections found then removed.

i read this page too The Windows Security Center service can't be started. followed everything(ESET scan, flush.bat etc.) problem not solved!

scanned with spybot, 3 problems were found one of which was 'security center service couldn't be started'.

after all this, the problem still exists and the browser still gets redirected to some pages.....
please help!

Well it's been a long time. I have thought of something that might help. Check and see if you have any programs that you don't know what they are or use. A unwanted program can be turning off your security. If you find something, Google it and find out what it is and what it does. Try using a different browser and see if you have the same problem.

Could be a possible virus MB can't remove or an extension on FF that's not getting along with another program.

What AV are you running? Some of them take control of the security settings.

You can try installing MSE or D/L and run the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool

You could also try using this tool:

Norton Power Eraser

http://security.symantec.com/nbrt/npe.asp?lcid=1033

Quote:
Because the Norton Power Eraser uses aggressive methods to detect these threats, there is a risk that it can select some legitimate programs for removal. You should use this tool very carefully, and only after you have exhausted other options.

Edit: Found these

Trojan-Proxy.Win32.Agent.ck [Kaspersky Lab]
BackDoor-CLK.dll [McAfee]
Troj/Cimuz-F [Sophos]
TrojanProxy:Win32/Agent.CK [Microsoft]
