Performance issues (sudden high CPU Usage/Physical Memory)

Q: Performance issues (sudden high CPU Usage/Physical Memory)

Hello

Fairly recently, my computer began having performance problems after about half hour of usage and only running a few programs (Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Word, for example). My CPU Usage/Physical Memory both shoot up above 90%. I have uninstalled unnecessary programs, disabled many programs on start-up, and have run virus scans using different scanners, but nothing I've tried has helped. Can somebody please diagnose whether I have a virus?

I am running Windows 7 on a Samsung 900X (Intel Core i5-2467M CPU @ 1.60GHz, 4GB RAM, 64-bit OS).

Thank you very much in advance.

Preferred Solution: Performance issues (sudden high CPU Usage/Physical Memory)

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello everyone, I've been having a very weird problem recently, in which I BELIEVE is involving high physical memory usage. Sometimes I will be doing things such as playing a game, or watching a stream, and my computer will run fine for a little while. But at random times, my computer will majorly slow down and sometimes even crash. If it doesn't crash, sometimes it will get so slow to the point where I have to hold down the power button and manually shut it down. Every time my computer slows down I notice it is using a TON of physical memory. It's actually happening right now. My computer is going very slow and it's using 6.22 GB memory out of 8. There are no big programs running right now, so I don't understand why it's being slow. I hope someone is able to help. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Update: I just tried to open chrome, and the computer froze completely. It would not unfreeze. After leaving it frozen for a minute or two, the screen went black. This is becoming very frustrating.

My 32 bit vista with 2g ram since earlier today has been running at a constant 40-50% physical memory with no programs running!!! Even my cpu is higher then it should be at 20%.

Task manager performance tab it shows my free physical memory at 0. It's usually alot more then that, 200+. Usually when I have most of my usual programs running its still never this low! firefox, msn messenger, utorrent, even a java based mmo game. Before earlier today I could have all these programs running and still have a decent amount of free physical memory, now I have no programs running hardly and it's 0 free physical memory.

This all happened shortly after I installed a number of programs. mostly stuff to mount virtual drives and the like. Daemon tools, ultraiso and somethen else maybe. I have run windows defender scan along with malwarebyts and nothing malicious shows up. I've even disabled indexing and superfetch so those are not the problems.

I'm only running 69 processes with only 3 of them 30,000k or over. I'm the only one who uses this computer. I've even tried a system restore but the mysterious high activity remains. Please help!

I'm new here so forgive me If I'm missing anything important

Also superfetch causes my cpu usage to shoot up extremely and has forced me to disable it,but this is only just recently. Worked fine yesterday.

A:High physical memory and low ram all of a sudden?!

hi,,,, if it just started to happen after installing new apps then reverse the process and uninstall them and see what you get,,,, do you have a stand alone gpu,,, if not then when your playing games using daemon tools then it could be using your ram for game play,,, whats the make and model of your pc.

Hi there.

This is probably a stupid question, or one with a "computers are mysterious things - put up with it or buy a new one" answer.

My laptop, with no programs running (and by that I mean only whatever opens up at startup - so no Firefox, iTunes, Thunderbird, Windows Live Messenger, Photoshop, Second Life, etc, etc.) usually shows 0-5% physical memory usage. It's been that way since I bought it a year ago.

A few days ago, my laptop suddenly jumped to 30+% at the same state. No programs open, I haven't downloaded anything new, I haven't made any software or hardware changes, but suddenly I'm using 30% of my memory? This is a killer once I start actually opening programs, when memory hogs like iTunes, Photoshop and Second Life bring my memory usage up to a previously-unheard-of 60+%!

I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit (Service Pack 2) on a Dell Inspiron 1525.
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo CPU @ 1.83GHz 1.83GHz
Memory: 4.00 GB

I've run both McAfee and Adaware, and apart from a few tracking cookies, neither have found anything.

I tried to System Restore to a time before this started happening, and at first that seemed to fix the problem. My physical memory usage would drop down to 0-5% at startup. As soon as I rebooted though, the problem would reappear.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I can't enlarge that pic to get a decent view.

6 GB of RAM. What is that---a 4 GB stick and a 2 GB stick?

What malware/anti-virus/anti-spyware stuff do you have running when the PC is bogged down?

Since I can't see the pic, I can't see anything about running processes either.

Have you upgraded any software lately--or installed new software?

Is that a 13 GB page file?

Greetings,

I formatted my computer, and after installing windows 7 again, my physical memory in task manager is very high, and cpu keeps jumping up and down.

I looked at the processes tab, but noticed absolutely nothing taking abnormal memory (private working set.) Then moved on to performance tab> resource monitor, and found svchost (I think it was netsvcs in parenthesis,) hogging all the memory. After ending the process, I still have had high memory usage, and surprisingly, do not see a process anywhere in task manager with high numbers next to it, so I have no idea what's happening.

I have noticed that my windows 7 folder keeps increasing in size, currently about 26 gigs, and a helper told me that it's normal because the updates in windows 7 have a different compression method than windows 8 and after, however when I had previously installed windows 7, fully updated... my folder size was normal, so I assume it can be done?

I originally posted in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs section, however I did not find malware on my computer, so unless it's very new malware, I am certain windows 7 is causing this problem.

For antivirus, I am currently using a free trial of Norton.

Advice?

P.S. This is probably better for the hardware section, but can constant high physical memory, and cpu usage ruin my hardware? I am avoiding using things that take up high cpu and memory right now, and it's currently about 1.2 g... Read more

Ok, I am literally KILLING myself over this!

I installed Windows 7 64Bit over XP around a month ago and it was so good that I recommended it to my brother who was previously on XP too. We got him a copy of the 32bit version as he has only 2gb of memory, and he installed it on his machine. However, he constantly had high CPU and RAM usage (Even though no programs were obviously taking it all up in his task manager) and it was making his computer sluggish and slow. Everything was freezing and hanging and it was a nightmare.

I spent a day looking all over the net to find out the problem, but could not fix it at all, no matter what the hell I tried. So he reverted back to Windows XP. (A nice waste of money on Windows 7.) His Windows XP now runs smoothly and is all as it was.

Suddenly today, after my brother connected to my Windows 7 homegroup (or workgroup rather) through his Windows XP machine, my computer got the EXACT same problem as he had ages ago! I have been browsing Google all day downloading s**t, changing things in my computer, trying EVERY possible fix that people have suggested and that sound legit. Nothing works!

So now all of a sudden, my computer is sluggish, games are jumpy and jittery, video rendering times are slooooooow.

Here is a picture of my resource monitor:
You can see the physical memory usage being at 45%. I've ordered the memory usage of each service in highest to lowest.
I just CANT see where the problem is!

I can tell you what is probably causing your problems. AVG.
When you are looking at memory, do not sort by Working set, sort by Hard faults.
Hard faults is what causes things to slow down. Plus you have plenty of memory not to worry about usage.

Hello every one! These past couple of months my CPU usage has been extremely high and it has never been that way before all my games ran completely smooth and fine on highest settings and now i get lag or take a long time to connect. On start up of my laptop I open task manager and close necessary programs that take up a lot of CPU usage making it hang in between 5-10%. But when i start up League of Legends or any other game it shoots up too 50-90%, i have both Fixcleaner and DriverUpdate so all my drivers should be up to date and my computer is clean of junk (from what i know) I also use Avast and AVG. PLEASE HELP ME GET MY COMP BACK TO HOW AMAZING IT USE TO BE!!! **also at some times there will be 2+ SVChosts.exe that take up most of the physical memory and cpu usage, but the services on them will crash my comp if i stop them.

Heres my specs.

Hello boki and welcome to Seven Forums.

Windows 7 has a built in tool that can help figure out how your RAM is being used. It's call Resource Monitor. If you could post a screenshot of the Memory tab it will give a better idea of how RAM is being allocated during game play.

Resource Monitor

Windows 7 is not like previous operating systems. It has a different way of using RAM. It tries to use as much RAM as you have available because "unused RAM is wasted RAM."

You could also try running the Disk Cleanup utility, especially deleting unnecessary system files (step 5.)

Recently I have been having issues with my computer locking up after exiting a full screen game and trying to open any other full screen game. I am fairly confident that it's a video card issue, but through looking through my task manager, I've found that my physical memory usage is at 65% of 4GB (2.65GB) when I'm not currently running any major applications (Currently just internet explorer). I don't know if this is too vague of a problem, but any insights would be wlecome.

I fail to see a high RAM usage in your snip. Look into Resource Monitor > Memory tab. The colored bar will tell you the real story. The sluggishness could have other reasons.

I saw some videos aobut comparing vista and win 7 and both had similar performance. I regretting that I didn't upgraded to win 7 when I had a chance tho..
but by seeing that visata can run pretty similar to win 7 I'm relieved a little but..
in the video that I saw.. he had about 27% of physical memory running on vista and mine is running 70% right now.. I was like "Oh, wow.."
So... how can I make my computer use less physical memory to about down to 20% ~30%?
If I bring down my computers physical memory percentage down will it help on gaming and other operations get better?

and some other questions:
1. I still want to upgrade my computer, if I can, to win 7, so do I need to get win 7 64bit version because I have 64bit OS right now?

2. Say if I buy win 7 and make a back up CD for win 7, can I use it on other computers? or no?

I would appreciate anyone's help

You can go with 32 bit, but must do a clean install with format. You can get a Windows 7 upgrade DVD to to do this, It is cheaper than full retail

Hey,

Wondering if anyone of you more experience Windows 7 users can help me with the system lag problem I've got going on at the moment.

I did a Google search and found quite a few posts on this forum alone re: lag/high memory usage and for the last couple of days Ive been giving my system the once over but as you will see from the screen dumps below, I've still got unusually high memory usage.

Previous to the lag I have now, I was getting BSODs, so I ran GParted and it found some bad sectors and patched them up, it was running sweet as a nut for a few days then *bang*...laggy hell! So now, I've uninstalled a few hungry programs, currently my 120GB disk drive is 79GB free. I've cleaned my PC is spyware using Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition and check for viruses with Avast! - It told me I didn't have any. I've also done a Windows Memory Diagnostic on startup which found no errors, cleared excess C:/program files folders that hadnt been removed by my earlier unistalls, ran disk clean up and defragmented. I also have selective start up via msconfig with just my bare necessities running.

I'm sorry for typing loads, I am a bit stuck, not really sure what more I can do - Any help would be very greatly appreciated as I work from home and my productivity is dismal lol!

Many thanks,

Okay, the type of computer I have is a Windows 7 home premium, HP mini laptop.
I have gotten it from my dad and it only has 1 GB.
Before, I could open up a low memory browser like K-meleon, Slimboat, or whatever
have Trillian open and it'd be at like 40-60%
and recently it has spiked to 80-90% when I have nothing open.
Its the worst if I restart.
I have run a lot of virus/malware scans, and I remember removing some spyware, but it didn't help. Might have even been unrelated
anyway, I have tried to do a system restore, that didn't work.
I looked in task manager and nothing unusual is running, and I looked in the process manager, and like...nothing is there using up all the memory???

I can't buy more memory at the moment, and I'm thinking of just getting a new laptop and stuff with more memory anyway. But until then, I reaaaally wanna fix whatever's wrong with this one so I can keep using it.

I could run Paint tool SAI and have SMplayer open and it would use AT MOST 70%, now its 80 to 90% once again..

I'm getting frustrated with all the stuff I try and it doesn't work.

Can anyone help me figure out what's wrong?
I did disk cleanup, got rid of temp files, cleared all sorts of stuff and nothing....

Hi,

about two weeks ago I saw that my computer used a lot of memory (3/4GB). It hasn't been changing a lot in the past two weeks. Now, what could I possibly do to prevent my computer from using so much memory? The only programs I have opened are Firefox, Nettalk (IRC Client), Thunderbird, occasionally uTorrent and Dropbox. Except for Firefox, I don't see anything using too much memory.

Here are a couple of screens of the Task Manager and Resource Monitor:

You have 3 gigs installed, and one is free. Of the remaining 2 firefox is using 627Mb, Thunderbird 138Mb, both are higher than I have ever seen. So that leaves you one left for the rest of the processes.

I would imagine from FF usage that you have quite a few addons? Do you and what are they?

I'm not a tech-adept person, so would really appreciate some help. The physical usage is at 98-99%, then after quite a while it drops only into the mid-80% and when I try to do anything, it zooms back up to 99%.
Can't get my PC to do anything -- tried to open Malwarebytes but can't get past the first screen to activate it or Iobit Advanced System Care.

I force quit (held the on-button on until computer shut down) and now it's doing a disk-check, but it had just done that when this trouble started an hour ago, so I'm not very optimistic.

I don't even know what "physical memory" means.... could the fact that I downloaded a dozen or so 3mb photos to the desktop recently be a factor?

Okay, chkdsk is finished, am waiting for boot up. It's taking a very long long time. I've got just the black screen with the little bar with little green vertical bars running across above "Microsoft Corporation" Meanwhile, I'll post this and hope somebody sees it and can help.

Okay, the first Vista screen has come up (with the three users to choose from). I'm trying one of the other users (they're all me) just to see what happens. It's assembling slowly.

I'm going to post this now and will welcome a response!

hello guys!

just wanted to ask for your opinions/tips regarding this one..

i have a Gateway MT3707 laptop with a Windows Vista (32bit) OS. lately, i have noticed a weird behavior with regards to my unit; its performance has really slowed down lately. upon startup, and/or even though only one one program is running, the whole unit tends to lag already. as i tried to observe its performance via the task manager, under the performance tab, i seem to notice that the physical memory usage history part is almost at its limit already.. it seems to be fixed at the 80-90% capacity always, whether programs are running or none at all.. (see attached image)

as an effect of this, programs running tend to lag, and also suffer the case of them Not Responding; in short, a very slow performance..

any suggestions on how to lessen/ improve the performance itself? already tried disk cleanup and defragment but after which, still the same.. thanks!

your attachment tells nothing. It would have been better to see what processes were running. Have you ran your anti-virus and anti-trojan programs?
have you ran mike lin's startup editor?

Imgur Here is a album just demonstrating 4 situations that this has occured, notably when this occurs, the only 'demanding' programs are skype, chrome and steam. Surely not enough to warrant this much usage.

My system specs are on my profile, most of these programs occured after installing a cooler, but don't seem to be a ram related problem, as I replaced them already..
I have already tried performance monitor, clearing up start up items, memory diagnostics.

Please help me ! Much appreciated.

I'm not sure that I'll be able to help you find the offending app(s), but maybe I can help you to post those images in a way that more members will see them. Some members are not comfortable visiting image hosting websites. The steps in this tutorial should let you post the images as attachments to your post: Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

Step 10 thru 12 show how to place the image inline so that you can have text above and/or below the image. Otherwise, the images will appear at the end of the text in your posts.

You might want to post screenshots of Resource Monitor - the Memory tab and the CPU tab.
If you get bored, I would be interested in the results of a WDO scan.

A:High physical memory usage on new HP notebook

One thing you could do is determine if you have a problem or not. When all the physical memory is used and swapping is needed you suffer a performance hit. When some physical memory is just gathering cobwebs you have no (immediate) problem. Windows 7 is pretty good at memory management. It will sometimes keep stuff in memory just because the space is available and maybe you will gain performance by not having to load whatever it is.

Another thing is to use Task Manager to see if there are any memory hogs.

Title says it all, opened up task manager today and saw that my phyiscal memory usage is at 84%, with the usual processes running only. I checked for processes by all users and nothing unusual showed up. There was an svchost taking up some memory, making me think it was something malicious but when I ended the process the memory issues did not resolve while it was down.

I am not very savvy with computers and this is stumping me, actual performance doesnt seem too affected and cpu usage never goes above 13%.

Any help or clarification would be appreciated.

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

Chrome is a massive resource hog and it appears you have some tabs open while making those screenshots.

Do a restart of the PC, then retake those screenshots.

For the past month or so my computer has been using a ton of physical memory. It usually hovers around 60% and slows things down quite a bit.

A:Very high physical memory usage all the time

Looks like Firefox is using a ton of resources.

Try doing some of the things listed in this tutorial and see if you can get it down:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...uch-memory-ram

Also, are you using Spotify/Skype all the time? Figuring out what is up with Firefox and stopping Skype/Spotify if you don't need it would help.

You could also simply get more ram. Its not that expensive and its one of the best things you can do to speed up your PC, especially with your specific problem.

I am using Windows 7, with 4GB ram. My physical memory usage goes high upto 3.5Gig even when i use very less applications.

I have monitored using both Performance Monitor (Perfmon.exe) and Process Explorer.
All applications shows the same including my Task Manager/Wdws Gadgets.

My system is normal, but curious to know the reason.

Attached is for reference

Thanks in advance

You are doing anything but running less applications. I can see a dozen different applications that can the cause or contributing factor. Java for instance, does it need to be running? All that stuff under "Toaster.exe" do they need to be running?

So I have an Acer TravelMate 2480 running with Windows Vista. My computer is extremely slow with any opening any program and constantly says "not responding". I have run a disk defrag, disk cleanup, symantec and adware programs, and i stopped the "Windows Search" in my services.msc. I then went and bought an external hard drive thinking the music and photos on my computer were overloading the RAM even though I've have other computers before and this was not a problem. I've backed up my computer and deleted all music and photos. I then went into my programs and deleted all unwanted large programs. My computer is literally running with nothing on it, and is still extremely slow. There has to be something wrong as I do not want to be afraid of downloading some music. I constantly receive a notice bubble saying "memory low close programs to save information". I am the only user ever running on this computer and I have run the msconfig and startup to run on programs that are needed for a healthy startup.

I have attached screen shots for your perusal to help me.

ANY advice is helpful.

Hi Guys.

For the last 2 weeks , as soon as my PC gets switched on the CPU usage jumps to around 52% and Physical Memory to around 58%. I only have one program running and thats Internet Explorer 8.

Anyone know why it is so high? A virus or malware perhaps? I've tried running Spyboy Search & Destroy aswell as Malware Anti-Malware bytes, but no joy. As the CPU is so high, the computer gets very hot with the heatsink (fan) going into overdrive which makes an absulute racket. It doesn't effect the performance much as its a high spec PC but its now getting a tad annoying.

I've also noticed that at night time the internet speed goes down considerably, i'm on a 10Mb connection and the last few nights speeds have been like no better than the old 56k days! Someone perhaps using my machine to attack other machines/users.

Any help would be grand.

Edit: The list of things I have done but the problem is still the same-

Spybot Search & Destroy
Avast Anti-Virus Scan
Malware Bytes Anti Malware
SuperAntiSpyware
Ad-aware wouldn't work, getting a 'System Error 1814'
My sincere apologies if this is in the wrong section.

Thanks alot

I know - I shouldn't have run combofix because I'm not a Professional. I've heard it can cause problems and now I am seeing first hand.

I have a Dell PC running Vista SP1.

I tried to do a system restore but it didn't correct the problem with the Physical Memory usage. Hardly anything is running and it is steady at 70-80%.

Is there anything I can do besides back up data and and do a clean install of the OS?

Sorry if this isn't in the right forum.

I would really appreciate any input on this, thank you in advance,

Adam

Hi Everyone,

My name is David, and I found your forum through my efforts to resolve a computer problem. Any guidance you might be able to provide would be wonderful.

Here is my basic computer information: Windows Vista Home Premium, Intel Core Quad CPU at 2.67 GHz with 4GB of physical memory and the 64-bit OS.

In the past few days, I noticed my CPU fan is running more than usual. I am a quadriplegic and I spend all day on the computer, so I pay close attention to how it's working.

I checked my system performance through the task manager, and nearly 70% of my physical memory is being used. I don't know for certain, but that seems high to me.

I have tried to investigate my processes, but I don't really know what I am looking at.

The only things I have done out of the ordinary lately are download an episode of Survivor from a torrent site and experiment with a VPN service, which I have since uninstalled.

To resolve the fan running problem, I have run scans with Malwarebyes and Ad-Aware which removed a handful of suspicion files. I also have Norton Security running at all times. The problem still remains.

I have attached a few screenshots that I hope will be helpful (the Wivik programs are related to my onscreen keyboard).

Please let me know if I can provide any other information that would be helpful. What should I do next?

Best,
David

A:Fan running more than usual, physical memory usage high

Hello Ucwheels. I can help you if you will download, install and run Process Hacker. http://processhacker.sourceforge.net/

Run as adminstator and lets see what process(s) are eating you ram from here. From there we can dig deeper and see what the underlying problem might be if it's OS related. From your screenshots I can't get a clear picture.

Also press Windows key + R type mdsched.exe and hit ok then restart and run the test. Let's check if your ram has become faulty. I will be back on tomorrow unless someone else can help you before then.

Hi all, i,m new here hoping you can help me.

My laptop (HP G62 running windows 7) takes a long time to boot and is very slow and almost impossible to use. The physical memory usage is very high all the time at around 90%.

The computer works fine in safe mode.

I notice a high memory usage of svchost.exe which can be up to 300 000k...........could this be the problem?

7 days ago it was infected by a Trojan Horse named Generic31.apje. I followed the path named and deleted the file from c:\ProgramData\browsermanager....................after doing this I completed a scan and the results where that the machine was clean. Could this still be an issue?

Thanks hope someone can help me

What process uses the most/highest CPU...........check the taskmanager.

A great program to pinpoint problems is Process Explorer from Microsoft now.
