Windows 7 index searching

Q: Windows 7 index searching

Okay I have gone through many forums and tried about everything, So I came too this site which has been helping me since I ever owned a PC with windows 7, But I have a problem and unlike before I cannot find anyone else with this dilema shall I say...

Straight to the point, When I move my users from my C drive to obviously save space windows index is always been clever enough to search files I needed now instead of buying a bigger D hard drive I've used an older WD caviar Blue 1tb hard drive for my files and had the drive letter changed to B...

Now for reasons I cannot find out with days of searching is that even if i move users folder to a portable hard drive index still finds it!!! yet as soon as I move it too B: Drive... It wont even bother to search soon as I type it goes No Items Match Your Search...

Now hopefully I got you guys attention here... So Let me give you the full in details...

Like I said its a caviar Blue 1tb 7200rpm exactly same as my black drive except im using a sata II lead and port instead of Sata III lead/port which is what my caviar black drive is using.

The hard drive is fine it copies fine infact it sometimes has better speeds than my caviar black drive!

The security settings on all my drives are exactly the same I tried giving full permissions to all users etc but did'nt make a difference.

I think thats all the info I know if you guys have any questions please ask, I desperatly miss just typing in search box too find a file within hundreds off others :/

Oh one more thing to make this little wierder... If i add the entire B drive to windows index its impossible too search anything at all on it... And im talking not within the users files im talking certain music back ups i have on the hard drive next to my users folders it wont search them?? Yet if i take The entire b drive off index it will find them straight away? including within user files BUT when i say click my pictures or my music from the windows startbar and type in the search box nope nothing refuses too find it? Soo please I beg of you what gives am I really being stupid here or is there something really wierd going on?

Thanks for you're time,

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 index searching

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows 7 index searching

Oh and I've tried a few Reg edit moves such as going too HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

And changing the default, , Public, Profile Directory

too My B: Drive (of course I moved the Hidden default folder and the public folder aswell... and i'm guessing the profile directory was the users which I moved too the B: Drive also So in my B: Drive i have 3 folders... Old Music, Music need to sort, And users which inside the users faulder I have the hidden Default and the public one aswell... which have only been copied too the B: Drive from the C: drive... so not cut and paste...
Thanks again!!! :-)

I have had this problem since inserted a extra drive in my computer. i had to move folders that were gradually filling up the main drive. so i added a new hdd, sata -Seagate 1tb. The folders i search through is to use as a database. which win7 index search is useful for this.
In index options in control panel, i have added the new drive to be indexed. and sometimes windows is indexing. sometimes i's not. i have made sure it is in the modify section of index options.

Also have rebuild the index from scratch again .

but after a few hours it says ----the index complete.
there is no restart button only a rebuild which starts all over again.

but when i go this folder in the drive in question, to search, i don't get any results, even, if i know for certain the file name is there, by just going to the first folder and visually seeing the file name. the whole folder is approx 200gig. with 20 odd subfolder with apprx 8gig ea.

folder options /search .I've ticked -in indexed location search filenames and contents.

i've tried to restart the indexing by admin tools/services/right click-windows search options and click restart. but this only sometimes works. But at the moment i have 330194 items indexed, when it is indexing this number rises, then after a while stops and says - indexing complete. with not even looking like it is going to restart .like i said before, I then search the drive and no results. all other folders in the other drives work per... I have 2 computers that I have completely reformatted & Clean Installed Windows 7 on them both. I Have 2 Seperate win 7 disk for them. 1 is a desktop, Other is Dell Inspiron 1545. (Labtop) is the one im working on right now, (testing) I Have Done This Many Times In The Past With No Problems. now im having problems with both getting any more upgrades after windows update installs its version "Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320". After This They Both Hung Up. So For The Labtop, I Have Totally Reformatted Twice From Disk trying to fix this with no success. im stuck on internet explorer 8 and it wont let me go to almost none of the microsoft support pages to be able to run-try other fixes.
I have managed to run the sfc /scannow and it did not find any violations/problems.
I Have Also Downloaded The Stand Alone/Rediness Tool and ran it. It Still Just Says Searching For Updates. Not Sure What Else I Need To Do, Any Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated. Logs are attached.

A:windows updates searching, give error 80080005, back to searching

Hi Marie318 & welcome to SevenForums. I'll try to help you.
How long did you let windows update run? It sometimes takes hours usually 3-4 for the updates to appear. some reports of 24-48, but rare. SURT takes a while to complete, depending on the issues it finds.

I usually set my computer to sleep never, start windows update & call it a night. when I check in the morning, 200+ updates are ready to install. If you have 4gb of ram, choose about 100 or so & they should install, for the most-part. Trying to install all of them at once will most likely produce "out of memory" error. WU doesn't choose them in any particular order even though some are prerequisites for others. SP1 is a major one.

If you start task manager under the performance tab, while downloading updates, you will see the ram load. all updates are temporarily stored in ram until Windows verifies each update is complete & digital signature is valid.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Hard drive error. Left long enough it might boot otherwise I would boot to a live CD and see if you can recover any data, then wipe the disk and test it before using again.

Well...when I put an MMC or SD card in the slot after a long wait the autoplay dialog box comes up with the flashlight doing it's searching thing but nothing ever really happens. bummer! task manager tells me that "my computer" is not responding. This is a virtually new pc, about 2 months ago we got DSL, 2 weeks after that we got trojan.vundo and I am thinking that during the exorcism we might have lost something we needed. We have used the cards with the pc in the cameras previously with no problems. I am hoping this is a no-brainer quick fixer!!! Thanks a bunch.

So here is my problem, I reinstalled my windows 7 ultimate x64 using the fresh backup I did the day I bought my laptop.

So the installation was done without any issue and everything seems to be working fine apart of Windows Update. When I launch the update, Windows Update just keep looking for updates withtout finding nothing and then after a long time, it show an error msg, I got two different for the moment : 8024400a and 8024402F
I have attached the CBS logs if someone can have a look.

Thank you in advance.

Just wondering if anyone had any idea why when i was using the rc 7100 build my index score for my HD was 7.8 but yesterday i installed the release of ultimate and my HD score is now 5.9. Was anything changed from the RC build to the release to make my score go down?

If you dont have an SSD the 7.8 was wrong. Any normal HD scores in the 5-6 range. after all 7100 was a release candidate.

After upgrading, I ram WEI. Processor os 5.9, Graphics 5.9, gaming graphics 5.9, hard disk 5.8 (raid sys), memory 5.0
I am using 5-5-5-15 DDR2 mem, 2x1Gb sticks in slots 2 and4. Mobo is a BFG 680i SLI.
Previously when I ran th esame test on the old rig, I was getting 5.9 easily for mem. So, what the hell is going on? It seems a very low rating for what it is. I am not sure if it is a windows thing, or a hardware thing- it is possible a more recent BIOS would make a difference, but I have been unable to locate ANY BIOS updates- BFG pages lead to dead links, as do pretty much every other lead.
Any ideas anyone?

Hi all. I hope I'm not duplicating a post here. I did a search and came up empty. My question is this: Has microsoft done away with the index.dat file associated with internet explorer? I've read that it is no longer included. Can someone confirm or deny? I know that IE8 has an inprivate browsing feature which is a great privacy tool. But if your browsing activity is still recorded elsewhere, it sort of defeats the purpose.

At the right hand side of my task-bar there is a small 'magnifing glass' icon that says 'Indexing Complete' most times. I would like to get rid of this but only if it's safe to do so. I've looked in 'Add & Remove Programmes' and I can see 'Windows Search 4.0'. Is this the programme I'm looking for ? It tells me that certain things were installed after the installation of this programme and that certain things may not work properly if I remove it. So can I remove this and if not, what does this programme do that's beneficial ?

Basically, I want to be able to even search for programs with the windows button + w shortcut.

A:Using Windows button + W (searching with 8.1)

There are different options depending on how you do it, Win Key + Q should do what you are after

Windows Key + W is a shortcut to searching the settings
Windows Key + Q will search everything, including apps

There is also Windows Key + F which will default to searching for files

When I search for bannerNum I only find it in three of six files I know it's in. And they all reside in the same directory. I'm being careful about options like Case Sensative.

The files are all text files created in Wordpad.

It finds it in the three files with the ending .js

It doesn't find it in the files ending .html, though I can search for other text strings and it finds the files containing the text string that end in .html

Lastly, if I change the name of the .js file to end in .html, it finds it!

Any ideas?

I switched from XP to 7 this year. I really enjoyed my time with XP especially because of the layout and I knew I would lose certain features like the way I could so easily search for files like mp3's and videos through my external hard drives. I do extensive film editing professionally, although im a bit disorganized as I am currently using two external hard drives and I am looking for some recordings I made from August 2011 but its difficult to find them because I don't have the same search features that Windows XP had compared to Windows 7. Can someone help me find a program possibly or something to help me look for files through date ranges, type of file be it an image, audio, movie, or text document, and size all at the same time? That would be very helpful to me. Thank you.

You open the store, then simply start typing what you want to search for. Or you can bring up the search charm.

It is used by Internet Explorer and will be recreated after it is deleted. So one option is to not use IE.

I did a clean install of Windows 8 Enterprise N, installed Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 and tried to run WEI but it says: The Windows Experience Index for your system could not be computed. Cannot complete the requested assessment. This system does not have the necessary multi-media support to run the requested assessment.

I have disabled KIS and it still doesn't work. I am aware that Win 8 Enterprise N comes without WMP, but is this the reason why WEI won't run? Also, is WEI necessary and does running or not running affect system performance?

A:Windows Experience Index won't run

My guess (and that's all it is) is that it is a driver-related problem.

Make sure all drivers are the latest available, especially those for graphics and sound.

Also install a third-party media player (I like K-Lite, or VLC is good). I've never used
an 'N' version, but the lack of a media player could be an issue with WEI, I don't know.

And no, it isn't necessary to run WEI, nor does it have any effect on performance.
Hope this helps.

So I ran WEI today and to my surprise my score seem to have drop from a 4.8 to a 4.5, now this may not seem big but it was my ''Gaming Graphics" score that seem to have took a toll from 5.3 to 4.5 now I don't seem to see any performance degraded what cause the score to drop?

A:Windows experience Index

It shouldn't be a cause of worry. It could be something as simple as a past driver update, etc. Just make sure you have all windows updates and all driver updates, and you should be fine. Let us know if you encounter any problems though!

This happened to me too, and it nearly drove me crazy
This is why I bought new parts, and wasted my money

I have some questions in regards of the Windows 7 Experience Index.
Currently my system subscore is 5.2.

Processor : 7.1
Memory : 7.3
Graphics : 5.2
Gaming Graphic : 5.5
Hard Disk : 5.9

I'm using Alienware M15x, Windows Home Premium 64-bit, 8GB Ram, nVidia GTX 260M.
I remembered my Graphic and Gaming Graphic subscore used to be around 6.2. Why do I suddenly get a much lower subscore considering I did not make any changes to my system ?

A:Windows 7 Experience Index

It's buggy in my opinion. Mine's the same, but my specs are pretty good.

Don't worry about it.

Welcome to seven forums blairseven: The best score on the index I think is 7.9. And the program has been discussed several times and isn't the best of programs for measuring your graphics ability. As we say it is to be taken with a grain of salt. Fabe
