Q: Solved: How Can I Change The Default Icon That A Program Uses For Certain File Type?

Hi all - i understand that this might call for the use of resource hacker ( which i really dont have much experience using ) but im willing to give it a try or perhaps any other method(s) that might be suggested.

PDF-XChange has a horrible looking icon ( to me anyways ) that it sets for pdf files.
i would like to change the i con to another of my choice.

This is the one it sets for PDFs that you save or create by default:
This is the one that i would like to make the default for new PDFs:
Can anyone advise on how i would go about achieving this?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Solved: How Can I Change The Default Icon That A Program Uses For Certain File Type?

Press the Windows key + R to open a Run box.

Type regedit.

Scroll down to PDF-XChange.Document (or something similar).

Expand it and click on DefaultIcon.

In the right-hand pane, double-click the default value and change the path to where you saved your customized icon (.ico file).

Reboot the computer.
Or, read THIS.

I'm trying to figure out a way to change the default icon for a specific file type (ie: change .vbs icon to a custom icon). I've been doing some searching on this forum and I've come across some ways to change default icons but they all seem to involve going through the registry. Is that really the only way to change the default icons on Windows 7? I LOVE 7 so far but that really sucks if thats true. What happened to the screen in the attached image (taken from XP)?

File Extension Icon - Change Default Icon

This happened awhile ago and I'm only NOW questioning its origins, but after a certain update, (or maybe not) a handful file extensions got their default icons changed to a rather peculiar one. It's a built-in icon, but doesn't fit JPEG, PNG, RAR, VHD, or even BMP. I've changed them back to default using FileTypesMan, but I noticed this on my old and current installation of Windows 7. Old was clean, current is in-place. Is there a certain update that causes Windows to change the default icons for some extensions? I mean, it's not major, but just curious why it goes through the trouble to mess with the default icons. On some other computers, such as the ones within my school, I've noticed that some programs show the proper icon within the shortcut properties, but when said program is open on the taskbar, it shows this one (attached) or the icon of a completely different application, like Microsoft word showing the icon of a database file or PowerPoint. Any ideas?

I upgraded to windows 7 through a clean install. I just reinstalled itunes but when it prompts me to change itunes to the default program to use for audio files, i click yes and nothing happens. It prompts me every time I open itunes.

I went to control panel -> programs -> default programs -> set default programs and itunes wasn't there. I then went to ->associate a file type or protocol with a program but when I tried to change the default program for .mp3 the following happened:

I double click .mp3
I click browse
Secondary Drive -> Itunes -> Itunes.exe
I arrive at the screen that popped up after I double clicked .mp3 and itunes isn't on the list.

I tried going to a random .mp3 file and changing its default program but the same thing happened.

Hi all!

I do a lot of webpage editting on my computer. Most of the time I would open up DW 8 and select my files from there. Now, I just want to click on the file in Explorer and edit in in DW.

However, when I changed the file type settings (through Windows Folder Options) it only did that. All the icons are still for Firefox and not for DW. Also, if I right click on the file and select "Edit" it opens in MS Word (which almost gives me a heart attack).

I know you may be asking "Why do you need to use the right click edit function if it is already opening in DW?" Well, I may change it back to open with Firefox by default so I can view the page and then right click > edit to have it open in DW.

So, my questions:

How do I change what the "edit" function does on a right click on an icon?
How do I change the icon for a file (in Explorer) if I have already changed the file type and it has not updated the icon? (Ex: file opens in Notepad and now I default it to open in MS Word but it still has the Notepad icon.)

A:Solved: Chaning default program for a file type

I assume these are html files. to change the edit function go to folder options>file types>highlight html > then click on advanced> highlight the edit function >then choose edit and then you can browse to the app that you want to perform the edit function.

Hi there -- seems like with every new update done to Windows XP Home (SP2 + all current updates), I develop a new little annoyance.

A few updates back, I noticed that when I change file associations to a specific program opening up my .jpgs, .tifs, and .gifs, from the default (Windows Picture & Fax Viewer), the newly-associated file does open the file, but the icons for those files remains as the default Windows Picture & Fax Viewer.

(I suspect at the bottom of many of problems MAY be the installation of my Lexmark printer -- but then, it's a convenient scapegoat for everything! )

Does anyone have a clue how I can get the newly-associated file extensions to reflect the icon of the program actually being used?

Thanks in advance,

.txt = %SystemRoot%\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE,0

How do I go about achieving this.

A:Use Different File Type Icons For Same Default Program

Hey there,
Try using the program "FileTypesMan" found here: FileTypesMan - Alternative to 'File Types' manager of Windows

Once opened, it'll take a minute or two (maybe less) to load all different file types. Right click on the
specified file type and select the option "Edit Selected File Type" or select the file extension and press F2.
From there you'll be able to set the default icon for that file extension, provided you have the ico files.

There are probably other programs out there that do this exact same thing, but this seemed to work well for me.

Hope this helped!

I use Google SketchUp a lot and each new model/file I create, SketchUp makes a .skb back up file of the last save. I was able to create a subkey in the registry to associate a different icon file for the .skb files but it does not change the icon if the folder view is set to medium, large, or extra large icons and gives a thumbnail preview of the file contents.

Examples of the same files in the same folder below.

Notice how in the thumbnail preview all the file type icons are red and in the detailed list view the .skb file icons are black and the regular .skp files are red, like I want them.

In this particular folder it does not matter, just an example. But when navigating through other folders that contain many image files as well as the .skb & .skp files it can be confusing to tell which is which and I don't want to edit the wrong one. The thumbnail preview can be very helpful so I am trying to avoid changing the folder views.

If anyone has an idea of how to change that icon in the thumbnail view it would save me a lot of time and confusion, thanks in advance.

Trying to change some file associations, so following the standard procedure:

Associate a file type or protocol with a program

When it tries to load the file extension list ('Loading....'), I get the messages:

Windows explorer has stopped working
Windows is checking for a solution to the problem
Windows Explorer is restarting

Then the control panel window closes.

1. This has never worked on my PC (Dell OptiPlex 780, 7 pro 32 bit)
2. I have Googled this problem many times and found many people have had it since about 2009.
3. I have never found a thread anywhere that solves it.

Many threads suggest causes like games programs, recent changes, viruses, Windows repair, AV and firewalls etc.
None of these apply to me, and none of these discussions have ever arrived at a solution anyway - well except one that suggested removing SOA800.DLL from MS Office. My MS Office didn't have SOA800.DLL, but did have SOA.DLL which I removed and rebooted. It didn't change anything!

I'm using Win7 Home Premium 64-bit, and I'm using the program Expressit 3.1 to create my CD labels.

I downloaded it from here:
exPressit SE - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Now, the files it creates, of which I have several made using its previous version, 3.0, are suffixed .exp. I have set my Win7 installation so that ExpressIt is the default program to open these files. Double-clicking an .exp file should therefore open that CD label in the ExpressIt program.

However, when I double-click an .exp file, the ExpressIt program does not open so that I can work with the file. If I run the ExpressIt program first, then 'Open' the file from within the program, it all works fine. (The problem with this 'workaround' is that when going to Open the file, its default directory is nowhere near the directories containing my .exp files and takes ages to browse to, so I don't want to do it like that).

So, is there some sort of setting I have missed out that prevents the program running when I double-click the .exp file icons? Or is there a tweak I can use?

A:Running a default program by double-clicking file icon

When you selecz the default program use the browse button to locate any other .exe files in the expressit directory, and see if it works.
I can be the problem, that the .exe that you have associated the file extensio with is just an app laucnher exe and not the main software, which can hadle the files.

Please follow the steps.

Open an elevated command promote.
Use FTYPE {fileType}={commandString} to creat a file type and associated command to open the file.
Use ASSOC {.fileExtension}={fileType}

For example:

I searched the site for a while and couldn't find an answer.... so I decided to post my question... sorry if this has been asked before.

Somehow every .IFO file on my computer (using XP) has been set to open with notepad as the default.... these files were from movies I've backed up to my computer, and when I burn the movies to a disc they burn properly, but then they won't read correctly when played on the dvd player. At first I thought it was just the type of discs I was using.. but later realized that the problem never occurred before I noticed all the .IFO files as default set to open with notepad.

What I need to know is how to set the properties of my .IFO files to read as Unknown application instead of Notepad.

Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can help.

Is there a way in 10 to add modifiers or switches to a default program?

For example, I would like a .xlsx Microsoft Excel file to open with C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" /e "%1 (That is, adding " /e "%1 to the command line of the .exe file)

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations lets me change the default program, but not HOW the program opens.
When I click on a file type, a pop up only gives me the option of keeping the existing default, or looking for a different app. But no right-click option or otption to modify how the program opens (as I believe there was in XP & 7).
(Also, is there a better way I could have described the issue in the subject line?)

The icon in your first screenshot is icon #2066 in the DDORes.dll and you are using 64-bit so that .dll will be in both C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64 so yes that icon can be changed.
The icon in the second screenshot must have came from the phone to find out where it is located at right click on it and then click on create shortcut which you put a shortcut on the desktop on that shortcut right-click on it go down to properties click on properties choose the shortcut tab and then click on the change icon button in the next open window the address field should show where the icon is.
