ThinkPad X230 Tablet screen brightness issues

Q: ThinkPad X230 Tablet screen brightness issues

I have just completed a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and all went well except for the screen brightness issue. Anyone have any ideas where I can simply increase this as I have searched everywhere for screen brightness, even BIOS for any setting for display. I have latest update to display driver. I have two other laptops and each shows much brighter than this one and I am surely disappointed in this display. Not sure if it is because this screen is touch enabled and also works off keyboard that could be the issue and a separate setting could be involved on the touch side of the display as it does work with a stylus pen or touch also. thanks and I hope I can get this brightness to increase somewhat as it is too hazy for me.

Hello,  I'm having some trouble with turning on my laptop. The problem originally started when some keys on my keyboard stopped working. I cleaned the keys, restarted my laptop, tried a previous restore point and then did a hard reset after nothing worked to fix my laptop.  After hard resetting, I tried turning on my laptop and it did not turn on. So far, I've plugged in my laptop into the adaptor, plugged the adaptor directly into the wall outlet, and removed the battery and plugged in the laptop. The one thing I have noticed with my laptop is that when I plug in the adaptor, the battery and sleep lights turn on for a moment, then the sleep light turns off, and the battery light will stay on momentarily but then it will blink off after a few seconds. What else should I do? Thank you

I have two annoying issues with my new ThinkPad X1 Tablet (Model: 20JB001DGE, running Windows 10 Pro, Build: 1709; 16299.371): When trying to create a new folder on a network share on my Synology NAS I get the error message:If I click 'Try Again' the message remains. When 'Cancel' is clicked I got the new folder with the default name 'New Folder'.Sometimes this also happens when renaming a folder or file. The only way to get rid of it, is restarting the tablet.I have already been in contact with the Synology Support. They checked the NAS, which seems to be okay. This can be confirmed by using another Windows tablet with the same Win 10 build, which can access the NAS shares and create folder without any issues.I also contacted the Microsoft Support. They adviced me to disable all non-Windows services and all auto start items.I uninstalled my Antivirus and Firewall-Tool Avast Premier, using Windows Defender only now.We also tried out different SMB configurations. (activating SMB v1 only on both NAS an PC vs. SMB v2/3, which is the recommended and more secure configuration.)Nothing of this helped so far.The tablet is connected to the DVI port of a monitor via the USB 3 Ultra Dock.Every once in a while some items are displayed larger than normal or seem blurred, for example when opening windows explorer. This screenshot should illustrate the difference. Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2½" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2½" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

Hi (my first post here), I observe severe performance issues when using my X1 Tablet (20GGCT01WW, 1.gen) in battery mode on Windows 10. Everything becomes so slow that it is hardly usable. Pluggin in the power supply and the tablet works fine again.I installed the Lenovo Power Management Driver form the lenovo webpage and tried to change the "power plan" on windows. However, the is no way, it seems, to prevent the cpu/gfx to be down clocked in battery mode? When clicking on the power-icon in the task bar, there is a ""power mode"-slider to increase the performance in battery mode. However, this also has almost no effect. There is no such problem when using the tablet on Linux, so it is not a bios thing. And the battery runtime with linux is only a little less than on windows.  The drop in performance is extremely annoying on windows and I find the x1 tablet hardly usable at all with windows in battery mode. So, any idea or help from anybody how to keep the maximum performance when when power is unplugged and only using the battery on windows 10?  I mean, what does it help to have a longer run time when you hardly can work during that time? Any help is much appreciated, nexus

Hi all, I would like to share my recent experience of Thinkpad X1 carbon (4th 2016) screen brightness problem, and how this problem been solved. The laptop cames good and the F5 and F6 function for screen brightness adjusting is OK. Other methods, like in the setting menu and battery menu,  to adjust the brightness are all OK.After one hour or one day or some short time, you will find you cannot adjust the brightness. Even the battery & power options are not working. The problem comes from the driver. First I thought it is the problem of driver of monitor (wide viewing angle high density flexview display 2560x1440 driver). I uninstall, update, change...but none of them work. Finally, I find it is the problem of intel hd graphics 520 . There is another evidence that during the time only this driver of intel hd graphics 520 has been updated automaticly to the latest version! So I uninstall and roll back to the version 20.19.15.4331 and the problem is solved.I did not check the lates version of this driver. But I am sure that the latest version of intel hd graphics 520 has conflict with the lenovo driver for screen brightness! I am sure there are other people face the same problem after the update of hd graphics 520 driver. Any engineer please check it!

But it is like when you close the laptop and the screens turns off, it is almost like that, I need a lantern to see what appears in the laptop, but besides that everything else works fine. If I connect it to an external monitor, then there is no problem, but you know, I don't wanna carry an external monitor with the laptop. Do you know how to deal with this? Thanks in advance!

I just changed my ThinkPad T450 laptop screen to a full-HD IPS display. The new panel (display) shows up in the Device Manager with Hardware ID MONITOR\LGD03FF. While the screen works, I can no longer adjust the brightness in Windows 10 - it's always on full brightness and the brightness key combinations no longer work (nor do any of the Windows 10 software brightness controls). The brightness adjustment keys work perfectly in Linux (Ubuntu 16.04), and they work if I go in to the BIOS. The monitor is showing up in the Device Manager as "Generic PnP Monitor". Any idea how to get brightness working in Windows 10 with the LGD03FF panel?

The first and only bug so far I have encountered with my P51: Out of the box, the machine is set with the Hybrid mode in BIOS, meaning it switches between the Intel GPU and the Nvidia Quadro M2200 (Optimus). I want my machine to always use the discrete GPU, so I switch to Discrete mode in the BIOS. This however means that you can no longer change the screen brightness of the internal screen, it is always set at 100 %. Definitely seems like a driver bug. I have tried reinstalling Windows already, same result: With the Hybrid mode I can change the screen brightness, with the discrete mode I can´t.

I recently upgraded my W700 to a clean Win7 Pro x64 install, downloaded the latest Win7 drivers from the Lenovo website, and did a manual install of all of them. Mostly there were no problems, however the OSD for mute, volume up/down, and brightness did not work. Here is the page for the Hotkey Features Integration package, which contains the OSD program: Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 8 (32-bit, 64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bi... The problem appears to be a bug in latest version of the OSD program, for the W700. I collected data on the various versions of the OSD utility; see below (I have used the overall package version as a reference, although the OSD program itself has a different version). Here is the fix: 1) Install the latest Hotkey Features Integration package. This gets the latest other packages, plus a broken version of OSD.2) Manually uninstall the OSD program (in Control Panel:Uninstall); reboot.3) Download and install the Hotkey Features Integration package version 3.85.0000. This is last version which works fully with the W700. Run the package installer, the run the installer itself. Make sure that only the OSD component is selected; run setup; reboot. That should fix it. It appears that the bug also exists in Win XP. Here is the info I have on the various versions: 3.33.0002 - OSD Works with W7003.81.0100 - OSD Works with W7003.84.2000 - OSD Works with W7003.85.0000 - OSD Works with W700 <&l... Hey guys, I'm new on this forum and I'm also new in using X230 tablet or any 2-in-1 laptop. This is my second ThinkPad but first convertible laptop. About problems. Shortly after I've got this ThinkPad I've installed Windows 10 because in my opinnion it works better and IS better than Win7. But after installation, I've encountered a few problems.First problem was no auto rotation - I could do that only by installing drivers for Tablet Buttons (it didn't bother me that much as next few problems).Second problem was not working Dolby Profile - anyone has suggestions why? I've read that eccp4.exe or something like that is not supported in Win10. The only thing with Dolby that did work was Dolby Digital Plus (and the equalizer there is horrible!).And third, and also MAIN problem was random screen touches. Did anyone encountered this kind of problem on yours X230 tablet? It happened only when I was fully in "tablet mode". Like for example I was doing some notes on classes and A LOT of times Action Center came up. With no touch from my side - I was only writing notes or not even touching the screen. Also normal touches appeared, not only Action Center sliding. Firstly I've got a little scared because it's used laptop bought on something like ebay. But my second thought was to go back to Win7 from recovery (which didn't work with F8, I've used SWM/WIM tutorial to fully recover system). And finally it seems that this problem doesn't occur on Win7. When I'm in full "table... Read more

i've been running windows 10 as a devoloper since before its's launch with very few issues.First make sure you download the drives from lenovo for winows 10 that till fix most of your issues.some things are just not compatable with the windows 10 OS look for replacements in the windwos store but your dolby does have a driver update. for some reason the thinkvantage software does not down load the drivers for you you'll have to do that on your own. Once you download all your drivers your X230T will run much more normaly. keep in mind however if you have the touch screen model it only supports 2 finger touch while winows 10 supports 10, it still works but many of the gestures don't you can chage your screen if your so inclined as far as i know there is no driver update. Good luck

Hello, I started a new post because this is a different Error. After I updated my x230t using the recommeneded updates from the website, my keyboard suddenly stopped working. I tried re-installing windows but the error remained. I eventually found the issue being that when I start up the PC, the Fn key is stuck as if its still pressed, even when its not (the key itself isnt stuck). To solve this, I went into Bios and swapped the Fn key with left Ctrl, and now whenever I boot up the PC I plug in an external keyboard and press left Ctrl, this "unsticks" the left Ctrl key (which is physically the Fn key after I swapped them)  and lets me use the computer normally. What could have caused it? is it unrelated to windows seeing as it happened after I clean installed? how do I go about fixing it? and can I contact an offical Lenovo support somewhere online?

Any help / tips on this? System fully updated.... I am not finding a pattern for it.... It happened once to me like five weeks ago, but not again. Suddenly happens every time after Lenovo BIOS update followed by two days ago the Windows 10 system update. So I am attributing it to it and to a BIOS vs. OS conflict of some sort. This is also because it does not seem to be a hardware problem... it can work [almost] perfeclty well for hours and without any screen alteration [flickering] and then just flicker the next day on start up / boot and will continue to flicker. And when works well, I move the screen and it does not alter ... does not flicker... really strange if it were due to a hardware problem. Anything to due with heating/cooling? unlikely, but eventually works with only a low brightness band and in these cases when screen working like that [without major flickering] it does not alter for hours. Thus when having been working for a certain period of time [without sleep], it does not flick(er)... I know there is another thread, but it says on low brightness..... and this happens in any possible screen resolution and brightness combination. All checked so far without any success.....  ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2ndProduct Number: 20JES16Q00BIOS: N1NET42W 1.29Microsoft Windows 10 Pro - 10.0.17134.1

Hi all, This laptop is giving me nightmares at this point. I can't afford a new one at this moment so i come here for input. The issue I am having right now besides the known audio failure is with the power management, spedificaly the throttling that happens while it is on AC. To me, it seems that the Speedstep roles are reversed. It runs on full turbo speed, over 3ghz on battery but it clocks down to 1198mhz according to CPU-Z when it is plugged in. No combination of settings either in the BIOS, Power manager or the Windows power options have any effect, everything is at 100%. The battery is installed at all time and I have tried both 65 watt and 90 watt AC adapters which are both new. BIOS is updated and I have tried both Win 7 and 10, fully updated with a fresh install with newest drivers and programs and numerous BIOS resets with CMOS battery removed. I am suspecting the power jack at this moment but Power manager reports both AC adapters correctly. I appreciate any response if anybody else has faced this issue or anything like it.

And now when I plug it in:

As you can see the windows controller is unchanged in the input recording tab but, the realtek program has detected the mic again by turning on the analog headphone button on.  As well as adding an extra tab to the program called "HD Audio 2nd output".  As far as I can tell t thinks my mic is a headset for some reason.  I wish to change this.  When I switch over to the sound tab on the windows program it shows an added headset which is actually it... Hello,I go the Lenovo X230 Tablet and it came with Windows 7 pre-installed and everything was working great. Then after installing Windows 8 Pro on the Tablet, everything works great except that the pen handwriting software is not there anymore. I can use the pen to move around with no issues. I can open, close and right click with the pen, but cannot use it to write. I installed the needed drivers for the pen and installed ThinkVantage update software from Lenovo support site and ran the update to get the latest drivers and software but no luck. I can calibrate the pen with no issue.Any ideas where I can get the handwriting software for it.?ThanksModerator edit: Added OS to subject.

A:X230 Tablet Windows 8 Pen Handwriting software

Hi, hmandi01

In Windows 8, writing-to-text transcription is normally a "keyboard," if you will, that you have to select. When you are on the desktop of your machine, is there a keyboard icon on the taskbar? If this is not visible in laptop mode, then see if it is there in tablet mode. If that icon is visible, click on it. This should bring up the touch keyboard. On this keyboard, the bottom-right key should be another keyboard icon. Select this icon and then select the pen option (third option.) This should change the touch keyboard into a transcription keyboard.

Best of luck. Let me know how it goes.
Adam

Hi,I am suspecting a hardware failure, but wanted to check the forums first anyway.I have an X230 Tablet running Windows 8.1 Update. Fingerprint software 6.0. Was working fine (i.e. swipe to power on and log on to Windows and the Lenovo Password Mgr) until this morning. No more green light on the sensor, no function. Windows says that the fingerprint sensor is not available. It was still showing up in Device Manager, I uninstalled it as part of some troubleshooting and it's not being detected anymore now.Any ideas other than hardware? Thanks,SA.

A:X230 Tablet fingerprint reader stopped working

It sounds like hardware failure but try one more thing:

Reboot into BIOS setup (by pressing F1 at the ThinkPad logo screen).
Go to the security -> fingerprint menu.
There's an option about clearing the fingerprint sensor storage (or something like that).
What happens?

Hi all, I have this problem: the fingerprint reader is regularly recognized by both the bios both win10 (TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor (WBF advanced mode), but Hello says my device is not suitable for Hello and does not see the option for access via fingerprint. I do not understand what can be; I reinstalled a clean win10 several times but nothing. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver of the fingerprint reader but nothing! what should I do? Thanks

I recently bought a X230 tablet. Actually I did not realise that it can rotate screen in tablet mode automatically, at least in Windows 7 and Windows 8. I performed a clean install of Windows 10 and obviously it did not support auto rotate even with all the drivers that Lenovo System Updater helped me installed. One thread in this forum solved auto rotate in Windows 8. It is largely the same to that thread. Except that for Windows 10 you need to let the X230 recognise the built in accelerometer which is actually mainly intended for protecting hard drive from being damaged after free fall. Incidentally accelerometer found its way in Sony's hard drive walkman HD5 before, which also has hard drive accidentally falling protection and screen auto rotating function. All you need is 2 pieces of software: 1. Thinkpad Tablet Shortcut menu                                                                 2. Thinkpad Active Protection System. The 2nd file is the one that will allow the accelerometer come to life. Installing this 2 software and the needed reboot. go to 'C:\Program Files (x86)\ThinkPad\Tablet Shortcut\' and double click on 'LENTBCTL' to run it. Then use your stylus to click the 'Settings' button at the lower left corner. Then you will find 'auto rotating' option. Tick the box ahead of it and following t... Read more

I bought a used x230T a while ago. Initially the touchscreen worked fine but the motherboard failed after about a month, so I replaced it. After doing so, however, the screen no longer takes touch input of any kind and the webcam no longer works. Any attempts to reinstall drivers have not worked, and I sometimes get an error stating that no touch input hardware could be detected. I've also tried unplugging and replugging the ZIF connectors many times. Does anyone have any advice for other steps I could take or others things I could try? I got the tablet model specifically because of the touchscreen so it's been disappointing to go without it. Thanks for any tips you may have.

I've had my U430 for two years now, but I've the brightness and general 'punchiness' of the screen has been low, but I don't remmeber it being this way before. It is especially noticable when the laptop is next to an iPad or mobile phone, with the whites on those screens are much whiter, while the laptop looks grey in comparison. The screen brightness is set to full on the slider within Windows and using the hotkeys on the keyboard. Restoring  the laptop hasn't resolved the issue. Any help would be very much appreciated!

I've attached a photo to help demonstrate my issue.

I have the i7 u4510 model with touch.

In the last week I've been having two new issues with my computer that I hadn't previously experienced. The major one was related to my wireless adapter and with the help of others on the network connection forum have discovered it was being caused by a conflict with Norton 360.

The second is related to my screen auto dimming the moment of my first key strike when entering my password. I am running a HP pavilion dv6t-7000 on Windows 7. I have turned off the power saving feature on my Intel graphics control panel. Any ideas on what could be causing this would be much appreciated as it is annoying to have to adjust the brightness every time I turn on the computer.

Thanks.
