Unexpected reboots, system restore errors

Q: Unexpected reboots, system restore errors

I can't believe that this kind of service exists for free... You must be a very generous group of people!!

I am using a Sony VAIO (VGN-NR498E), with Vista SP1, and Kaspersky Internet Security. KIS has not detected any malware today, although a few days ago, utorrent.exe was identified as "Trojan.generic," and I uninstalled and deleted the file. Additionally, my online banking password was changed last night (There is a small chance that I just forgot what it was, since I've been changing all of my passwords lately.. but I don't believe that is the case). I have only had this loptop for a couple weeks. I got it because my last one was infected with something and I couldn't even start Windows, within only 2 days of it beginning to act funny (I suspected a keylogger)..

Following are my HijackThis log and DSS main.txt (extra.txt attached):

Preferred Solution: Unexpected reboots, system restore errors

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

This started 2 days ago and has happened 5 times since then.  There have been no warnings/errors/BSOD, just random shut down as if it was an unplugged desktop (laptop with full charged battery).  After crash, reboots to options of safe mode as system did not shut down properly.

The specifics:

This is a Dell Inspiron 5737, only 7 months old

OS is Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium

Everything is updated

I have run all system diagnostic utilities available, including CHKDSK, with no errors reported and no issues anywhere

Dell tech support lied to me yesterday and told me they fixed it by unchecking the "Automatically Restart" box under "Startup and Recovery" and telling me it was an issue with a windows update that caused the crashes, yet the same thing happened again this morning, so apparently they didn't fix anything and just installed a couple of Dell optimization programs, each triggered AVG warnings and have since been removed.

If anyone can tell me what is going on here and how I can remedy this problem I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks...

I left my computer running (Vista Ultimate 32bit) yesterday afternoon, and when I came back to it the next afternoon there was a message on the screen that I had successfully restored the system back to a checkpoint four days ago. I did not initiate this system restore, and I'm trying to figure out where I can find any log files that might tell me why it occurred. I've done a lot of work in the last four days, and having the Registry rolled back worries me because it might wipe out useful settings and changes that occurred during that time period. I'd appreciate any help understanding the conditions under which Vista will elect to restore itself without my intervention, and where to find any logs or records.

A:Unexpected system restore

Hello billybellfoot and welcome to the forums

Open your start menu, in the search box put SystemPropertiesProtection.exe and click on it. What does it say for the enabled status of your hard drives?

I am new, so I may have not posted this in the correct category and I may not be as specific/descriptive as I should, but here goes:

From first recieving my lenovo t61 , after logging in an error pops up:
"Error in C:\Windows\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\LXCFtime.dll
Missing Entry: Run DLLEntry"

Also, upon attempting to run System Restore, it rebooted and told me it did not complete succesfully:
"An unspecified error occured during system restore."
When I went into info it had no info regarding that error and the help site online didn't help much either. I tried different restore points, I tried the recommended restore point, and I tried creating a new restore point, but it still gives the same "unspecified error" message.

I had installed a Lenovo printer, driver and took my PC in for service (due to the error msg). The guy installed cjr730EN.exe to fix the problem, which went away for awhile, but has reappeared approx. 2 months later.

The guy didn't seem to concerned that restore didn't work, but I am. Any suggestions as to the problem....
I am considering reinstalling vista and wiping everything... do not want to.

Also, I have MSOffice 2003 which did not fully install. Word and Excel kind of worked (I haven't bothered with the others) but often the keyboard goes screwy (? becomes a weird E symbol, etc.) and I tried to uninstall it but it says these things:
"Error 1913. Setup cannot update file

Hello,
I will try to explain this as best as I can so if you need any more information please ask and I will gladly answer. If this is in the wrong forum I apologize. If it is please redirect me and I will post it there.

I have built 11 computers, all containing the EXACT same hardware and software. I install windows 7(64bit), all the drivers for each component, and activated the copy of windows. The pc will run completely fine running any program I ask it to. The problem does not happen until I reboot the computer, now this is not always on the first reboot. These computers could last a few days and then I reboot and it all breaks. When I randomly reboot the system it will boot up showing problems and asking for a system restore. So I do the system restore and reinstall a few drivers and the same problem will persist.
I eventually get fed up with the whole process and decide to completely reinstall Windows thinking maybe I could have done something wrong(been doing this for 15 years no problem but it happens). After a completely random(as far as I can tell) amount of time and reboots the system will do it again. I am completely stumped on this issue and could really use the help. I have managed to get 2 working for a few weeks now but they hard bent cpu pins from the factory and I straightened them out. The other ones I have checked and they are fine(so it seems).
The System is running an ASUS P8Z77-v PRO motherboard, EVGA Nvidia 650 TI graphics card, i7-3770 CPU(may be an... Read more

I have just acquired a refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad T430 laptop. It has had Windows 7 Professional cleanly (re)installed.  I have come across a slightly odd problem and would welcome advice. I noticed that on initial boot up, a boot menu-screen flashed up very briefly with two options - 'Boot to Windows', or 'Restore the original Windows Image'. The latter choice came with a warning note at the bottom of the menu screen that this would erase all existing data. In any case the delay default is only about 2 secs, because if 'Restore Original Image' is not selected (and I have no wish to do so) it then boots up by default into Win7. Comment: I have other computers with Win7 installed and have never seen this menu appear on booting any of them. When I looked at the hard drive partitions, I noticed that there were already three primary partitions on the hard drive: 100MB System Reserved (which is normal and to be expected), 13GB Recovery, and the main Win7 partition. I had been thinking of installing Linux Mint as dual-boot alongside Win7.  However when I began running the Mint installer, I noticed that it said there were "multiple OSs already on the system". Comment: I thought that a bit odd, but assumed that maybe it was seeing the existing Recovery partition as containing a duplicate, or image, of the Win7 OS. I therefore did not proceed with the Linux dual boot install.  I want to do so using EasyBCD.  But before doing so I need... I recently purchased an Acer 5740G notebook computer. Windows 7 Home Premium was pre-installed.After only a few weeks of use the machine began to spontaneously reboot. Sometimes this can occur three or more times at intervals of less than 30 minutes and sometimes it can run for more than a day without any observable problem.I have run a thorough chkdsk on the hard drive, run sfc /scannow and five passes of Memtest-86 v3.5. All of these showed no errors or violations. I have also regularly run "Advanced System Care Professional" and "CC Cleaner" (amongst others) to check and repair registry errors, application paths, etc. I can't see any correlation with any application or process. It can happen in the middle of anything I am doing, or when the computer is idle.Below is a copy of the "Hijack This" log and I wonder of it gives any indication of a system or software problem. For about a week now something strange occasionally happens while I'm using my computer. It suddenly shuts down and reboots completely on it's own.
When it reboots its shows the "Windows was not shut down properly" screen with the "Start windows normally" choice highlighted. I do so and I'm back in business. But I never know when it's going to happen again. Today was the third time during the period I described.
Any idea what's causing these unexpected reboots?

A:Unexpected reboots

What version of Windows are you using ? That sounds like a recent version of Windows, like 8 or 10. But you posted in the DOS / other forum? DOS predates Windows 1.0.

Try going into Control Panel > Device Manager and see if there are any yellow icons. If so, see what the error messages says in it's Properties. And try to right click Update the driver.

This has happen twice so far in the last two weeks.

Yesterday I installed my backup HD to run updated backups using Acronis True Image. I shut down, installed HD, Asus ask me to setup new BIOS (F1 or F2 for setup). I get through BIOS & window loads only to find the system restored has restored to ten days earlier. All data from the last ten days are lost. When trying system restore back I get the "Catastrophic Failure" with Error (0x8000FFFF). All the options are there to restore to ten days earlier.

Have you ever see anything like this before?

I am completely unable to access my system restore in XP. 1st message says "system restore is unable to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and then run system restore again." Restarting does not help. 2nd message says "could not start the system restore service on local computer Error 3: the system cannot find the path specified." When I try to access it from the system restore tab in system properties, the error message is "RUNDLL An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL "C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysdm.cpl", System". From the system event viewer, it says the system restore initialization process failed. Error ID 104. It shows that every day as far back as the event viewer will show (6-5-04).
So far, I don't need to restore my computer, but I need to have that option, just in case!
If you need any other info (system, etc.) please let me know. I hope you can help me to correct this- starting from scratch and losing everything is not an acceptable option at this time.
Thanks in advance!

Hi whizzkid3

I'll let the malware-experts in the Security forums give you their feedback on the log, they have more experience in HJT logs (they'll give their feedback in your thread over there). I don't see anything at first glance.

Once you get a clean-bill of health from our Security experts:

Try changing a setting: right-click "My Computer", select "Properties", then "Advanced", and in the "Startup & Recovery" section - click on "Settings", then in the "System Failure" section - remove the checkmark from the box "Automatically Restart". If a fatal STOP error is occurring, this will let you see it. Copy it down & post it here.

Also check in your Event logs for errors that coincide with the restarts. Go to the Event Viewer to view the logs - it's in the "Administrative Tools" in the Control Panel (in "Performance and Maintenance" if you have Control Panel set to the category view). To view the details of an Event - right-click it and select "Properties".

Best of luck
. . . Gary

... I noticed that you have had many malware scanners active recently -- have any infections been found recently? If not, what symptoms have led to your wish to reinstall?

About once a day my screen suddenly goes black and the computer commences a reboot. I can find no common factor in either what I'm doing at the time or how long the computer has been running; it seems to happen at completely random times. I don't think it is an overheating problem as it has done it, though rarely, soon after the initial boot up. It has never done it twice in a session, even when I've been working for several hours. To my knowledge I don't have any programs that do updates followed by reboots except those that remind me beforehand. I've had the problem for several weeks. Any suggestions please?

I had a problem with Google Earth since it was failing on me and I found out that it was a file called "nvlddmkm", so I went around looking for a program that could repair it and I used "driver sweeper", well once I used it the problem became an even worse problem.

My display resolution is too low and it only gives me 1024 x 768, when I know for a fact that it can go higher. Well I tried to do system restore, but was met with another problem. It said that "Disk OS (C has errors".

I have tried multiple things in order to fix my problem. I've used both sfc/scannow and chkdsk it says it"cannot continue in read-only mode", so I read elsewhere that you can use chkdsk/f as an option and I typed in "Y". And when i restarted my computer nothing happened.

With sfc/scannow, I was given the log, which I tried to view on the notepad, but a box popped up saying "access denied'.

I also tried to replace the autochk.exe file with no results.

All that I can visibly see that has been changed by the driver sweeper program is that my display resolution cannot go any higher.

By the way, I own a Windows Vista XPS M1210

Hello Adstringo, and welcome to Vista Forums.

As a test, create a new administrator account to see if it works properly in it. If it does, then you can copy the contents of your old account's C:\Users\(User-Name) folders into the corresponding new account's C:\Users\(User-Name) folders.

Hope this helps,

I m having trouble diagnosing a problem.
Im using a 3d program on XP. I was experiencing hangups and crashes and when rendering a frame sequence the computer would crash to desktop or sometimes reboot itself or sometimes just say completed when it wasnt done all the frames. IF any ones knows about 3d rendering then you will know that each frame is rendered seperately to make a sequence of completed frames with the color, texture and lighting baked into a single image frame.

I have a feeling it is hardware but it may also be software. or a combination of both.I think it may be hardware because even in WoRD i was having weird things happen like when i went to paste and copy an image to make labels it was pasting the copied image into the cell but it was appearing as a white box only. but if I saved and restarted the program it would then show the correct image file in full color. As soon as I tried to copy and paste the image again it would do a couple correctly but then it would paste these white blank boxes and I would have to restart the program to see them correctly.????weird i know

I have reinstalled the OS to win2000 and that seemed to fixed the hangups and freezes so far when working in the 3D program. But when rendering it rebooted once so far before it was done the sequence. I have turned off the system failure option to reboot when there is a system failure and so far when testing it doesn reboot itself but it will say my render is completed before it gets alll of t... A:Unexpected Reboots, And Occasional Bsods

Thanks for the dump file, it'll help in narrowing down things. The crash occurred in win32k.sys - a core Windows system file. Although this is where the crash occurred, it's not necessarily the reason for the crash. The parameter c0000005 indicates that the crash occurred due to a memory operation. The actual operation was that it was told to access a memory location that did not exist. The process name that it's associated with is spoolsv.exe. This is the Microsoft Printer Spooler Service and is another critical part of the OS.So, in short, there's a problem with a driver accessing memory that doesn't exist and the print spooler is involved in this. So, I'd suggest uninstalling your printer to see if the BSOD events stop. If they do, then download a new copy of your printer driver from the manufacturer's website and install that.If they don't stop, then it's likely that either remnants of the driver remain (and are causing the BSOD) and need to be removed or that there's a corruption in the Microsoft Printer Spooler Service. If the latter, then we may have to resort to SFC.EXE /SCANNOW or a repair install to correct it.Another option is to enable Driver Verifier (without uninstalling anything), and see if it'll force a BSOD which names the driver (you'd have to perform an analysis of the BSOD event to locate it). To enable Driver Verifier, use this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/244617Two important points when usi... Read more

Friends,

First of all, thanks for being here to offer advice. This problem has been driving me crazy.

About two months ago, my relatively new W7 x64 machine started rebooting without warning. Lately the problem has escalated slightly in that it's also occasionally throwing BSODs, though not all that frequently. Please see the .zip file for all the sordid details. The reboots are the really annoying thing: they seem to have become more frequent recently and can happen three or four times a day now. Sometimes they'll even happen if the login screen isn't touched for ten or fifteen minutes after boot-up.

I started investigating this problem by looking at the minidumps and trying to isolate and remove the more obvious possibilities: a rather elderly Wacom tablet (now uninstalled, though it never caused any trouble before November), a new Lexmark printer (which was added to the system in November, also now uninstalled). The uninstallations have made no difference to the reboots, which continue to happen at unpredictable intervals.

The system is a custom build from Scan in the UK, delivered to me at the end of July '10. The processor is an Intel Core i3 530 2.93Ghz (overclocked to I think 6 Ghz.) on a Gigabyte H55M-UD2H motherboard with 4G of CMX memory, Artic Freezer Pro and Akasa Amberfans. There are two Samsung HDs (500G system drive and 1 T storage drive) and two Optiarc DVDs: everything's in an Antec 300 case with a Corsair 650W PSU. Display adapter is an ATI Radeon HD ... Read more

I've tried everything I've found on the net, to no avail. Here's the story,..

I cannot create a System Restore point. When I try to create one manually, I get:
The restore point could not be created for the following reason:

An error was detected in the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). The problem occurred while trying to contact VSS writers. Verify that the Event System service and the VSS service are running and check for associated errors in the event logs. (0x80042318)VSS is on Automatic and Started.

I see no "Event System" service. Does this mean System Event Notification Service? If so it is started as well.

I have tried this I found in another forum:
net stop winmgmt
winmgmt /resetrepository
net start winmgmtI have also re-registered the VSS components via:
cd /d %windir%\system32
net stop vss
net stop swprv
regsvr32 /s ole32.dll
regsvr32 /s oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 /s vss_ps.dll
vssvc /register
regsvr32 /s /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /s /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 /s es.dll
regsvr32 /s stdprov.dll
regsvr32 /s vssui.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml4.dll
vssvc /register
net start swprv
net start vssAlso, sfc /scannow No dice.

One or other of these solutions seems to have worked for every other poster in the forums I've found. Gee, I feel so special.

Any ideas?

System Restore gives me the following error when I try to go back to a restore point: "The disk Local Disk (C:) has errors. Windows has detected file system corruption on Local Disk (C:). You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored."

It then gives me a link that says "Check the disk for errors". When I click on this, it says "Windows can't check the disk while in use" and gives me an option to "Schedule disk check".

However, when I schedule the disk check for the next restart, and then restart my computer, the disk check freezes after checking 2% of the files. I'm also unable to cancel the disk check (the starting page says it can be canceled by pressing any key... this doesn't work!). I must have restarted my computer about 10 times, the disk check failing to cancel AND freezing every single time, before I figured out how to restart with the last successful configuration.

I currently can use Windows without any errors - there are just some recent minor bugs that I find incredibly annoying, which is why I was attempting to use System Restore.

Is there any way I can get System Restore and/or the Disk Check to work?

My computer is randomly rebooting and I'm getting random error messages saying something has shut down unexpectedly. Sometimes when the computer reboots I get a message telling me "Windows has recovered from a serious error". The last time it did this when the machine rebooted it came up to Check Disk and ran a scan, which found nothing.

I've scanned with MSE, MBAM and SAS. I have a complete ghost of the system from the 30th of December 2010.

This machine was recently cleaned with help from y'all but it still seems to be a little flaky.

Here's the link to the last thread on this machine;

Hello, Im new to theese forums, but I bumbed in here while driving down on the google highway, searching answers for my problem.

So, here is the story of my past week.
I decided to update my old computer a bit and ended up buying a SSD for OS, new mobo, new DDR and a new case.
I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit on the SSD and formatted the old partition that was for the Windows installation.
There we no errors during the install.
Now during gaming or running BOINC, my PC just reboots, no BSOD or anything, like complete powercut and restart.
This leaves no error message to the event messages, except for an error that Windows was shut down unexpected.
Ive tried a whole lot of tips and tricks.
One interesting thing was that the computer had restarted while running memtest86+ in Windows, I wasnt at my computer while it had happened, so I do not know if it said anything.
Ive completed Disk Check before Windows boot, Ive done sfc /scannow and it completed 100%.
Ive upgraded my BIOS to the ASUS Latest, NVidia drivers updated aswell, ive returned the stocksettings for BIOS, made sure that there is nothing there to OC it automatically.
Seems like something happens during load usually.
Atm my computer is running memtest86+ v4.2 USB Boot, gonna make sure if its the memory problem.
During the test, Id like to hear if anyone has any ideas on what to test next if the memtest doesnt bring up any problems.
Thanks beforehand,

- H

Hi,
I have no idea what is going wrong.
The model is an Acer Aspire One netbook (10.1 D270).

After a few minutes, it just reboots. This happened recently.

How can I diagnose the problem?

I can see nothing strange in eventvwr.

I would like to try some diagnosis before I try the shotgun trial-and-error approach (system restore, reinstall windows, change hardware).

memory diagnostic and disk checking (the tools that run with a restart) returned no errors.

Any suggestions?

I understand that I haven't provided much info, but I'm not sure what to provide.

There is no BSOD.

I don't believe a minidump is created either.

Temperature is within expected bounds (no higher than 45)

Also happens in safe mode.

Also, the RAM is not original, I'll try replacing the original chip.

If it turns out to be the RAM, what tool/s should I use to verify its integrity?
Also, there is no CD drive. So I need a USB boot utility if anything but the standard windows test (which I ran only with default settings).

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.
Please attach the DMP files to your next post not to post one.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder. If empty (or non existent) please look in the following folders. C:\windows (the dmp should be called memory.dmp), and C:\windows\LiveKernelReports\Watchdog.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

So i can't restore to factory settings, and i really need to! Help!!

A:Need help with Drive errors preventing system restore on eMachines

I have a bad feeling, do you still get back into your system, if not you can probably repair the instalation with an XP cd, andif so and if no one has a better idea, you might first try driver magician to gather all your drivers because if the drive where your ghost has been lost or something, it is always good to be able to just save/reformat/reinstal/load but for that you have to have the drivers gathered beforehard and have a copy of the same XP(pro or home), the rest since you have used your recovery disk before is simple enough. btw I am glad you are doing save/reformat/reinstal/load shows a spirit of self reliance.

Hi all

I brought the machine about a year ago, put 7 on it, and never had to do a System Restore until about a month ago.

After a month of twiddling around, it keeps happening every time I try one.

I apologise that I have not got a copy of exactly what the message is.

It (no surprises here) tells me that there were errors, and that nothing has changed.

As a result my PC is getting less and less like I want it (because I can't annihilate slip-ups by restoring past them).

I done the disk clean up method (where you get rid of all the restore points) many times; to no avail.

Please help me.

A:System Restore Always Gives Errors - Is it Time for a Repair Install?

Hi AD,
If the errors are Windows related, an upgrade install ran within Windows will help. If the errors are caused by what you installed, a clean install is the best option.
Getting a free or paid backup program is miles better than System Restore.

After having just cleaned my computer just a few weeks ago, I'm a bit pissed that something new has popped up so quickly. Even after several thorough sessions of virus scans and crap-removal, I'm still having a few retarded problems. I generally use safe-ish browsing habits with Firefox, rarely open any email ever, and never download anything I'm not already sure is safe.

First, I keep getting redirected from Google. I search, I click, I get sent to someplace in the middle of nowhere thanks to google-redirect.com. I'm not aware of ever having done anything that would specifically cause this.

Second, random programs will have several errors that pop up with the title "Windows - No Disk" and the message, "Exception Processing Message....." This is even happening with new programs, like DDS which I downloaded specifically to post this thread. It's random in its occurrences, even Task Manager caused it when I looked to see what processes were running.

Third, System Restore won't work. I had hoped to use it to go back to my last safe point, but nothing happens when I click the "Next" button to try to proceed past the "Confirm Restore Point Selection" page. Even repeatedly mashing it in anger didn't work.

Here's my DDS log:

I will try to make this as detailed as possible without getting angry because I'm frustrated... here goes...

Okay, I have Windows 7 64-bit, my computer is an Asus A53sv-TH71.

The other day, I had to download Visual C++ Express for my programming class (Comp Sci major), and it won't download because it won't download MICROSOFT APPLICATIONS ERROR REPORTING, so it stops the WHOLE download, thus me not installing it at all. I need this program for school.

So I'm like okay, let's update Windows 7 to it's latest updates to see if it will work.

It didn't work. ANd not only did it not work, Windows failed to install some updates.

Then all of a sudden, it starts to freeze 2 minutes after logging in. I had to go into safe mode, I scanned to see if anything was wrong in MALWAREBYTES, nothing found. I was uninstalling updates to see if that was the problem, and when I would log back in, I GOT A BLACK SCREEN WITH MY CURSOR.

I had to be in safe mode for awhile, then after clicking F8 at start up I clicked "Last Good Configuration". I don't remember if it was F8. BUT I GOT MY LAPTOP BACK.

Then, cmd.exe isn't working. I still couldn't install Visual C++. So, I decided I wanted to do SYSTEM RESTORE.

Nope, I couldn't because it said I had to check my disk for errors. I didn't mind.

When I go to check my disk for errors, it says unable to perform, a program has prevented autodsk etc... basically it's saying a program is s... Read more

Hi

My problems began a while back and I thought I had beaten them but maybe I didn't clean everything as well as I thought.

I frequently run low on hard disk memory on the partition where my OP is located and I have been moving things around between disks to free up space. The PC is often slow and I have presumed that this is a memory problem, however I'm often in the middle of running a program (especially Ad-Aware and Spybot) when the machine reboots spontaneously. I had to run GMER 8-9 times before I got a log.

Hello Snowflake101,

I'm not seeing anything in your logs. If you still require assistance, run this online scan to search for any remnants. It can take some time, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

**Vista users - right click on the IE icon and run as administrator

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/par...avwebscan.html

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:Close any open programs
Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

3. Click Run at the Security prompt. The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database. Please be patient as this can take several minutes.Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
Click View scan report at the bottom.

Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

Hello and thank you in advance for the help provided. I have been working on a Dell N5010 with 4GB Ram and 1TB HDD.

The unit would only boot into Safe Mode, however after running a few different virus scans (and a few maintenance tasks) the machine no longer boots into safe mode. I'm not positive if the virus scans are what caused this or (attempting) to fix a few other things like permissions. It could have been after an update, however I am not sure.

The BSOD is: 0XF4

I checked the HDD and the RAM for errors. (Seatools and memtest86) Everything was fine that way.

Startup repair states it cannot fix the problem.

When I try system restore it says: "0x80071A91 An unspecified error occured during system restore."

I tried sfc /scannow and it states that a System Repair is pending which is required to complete.

When using the scannow with /offbootdir and /offwindir it states that it found errors but was unable to fix some of them. Details included in cbs.log
The CBS log does not contain updated information, the last date recorded was 2 weeks ago. I renamed the CBS log in hopes of it created a new one, however it does not create a new log.

Hi,

First my system specs:

OS: Windows XP (SP3)
RAM: 4GB
Processor: Intel Quad Core Q6600
I use:
1. AVG v8.0 Free (I update definitions daily twice)
2. Comodo Internet Security v3.5 (I update definitions daily)
3. S&D Spybot v1.6
4. Windows Defender
5. Advanced System Care v3.0 Pro

Yesterday I was surfing the net trying to find a software when I stumbled upon a link for a file which was renamed into the file I was searching (later i understood that it was a divxaccess.exe file). And I do not know whether my stars were bad or I was going through a phase of having my brain numbed I installed the exe file (however, before installing I scanned it using AVG v8.0 free with the latest definitions and with Comodo Internet Security v3.5 again with latest definitions and both did not find any problem in the exe file). Also, Spybot did not throw a registry modification approval window.

After installing the first thing I noticed was that I lost my network (I use a WPA2-TKPor TPK security enabled wireless) I could not access the internet and then being fully aware that restarting the computer would cause problems I restarted the computer (I think I was brain dead at this time). Anyways, as soon as Windows was loaded I got multiple svchost application errors with memory problems (I think it were around 15 or so all for the programs that load on start up).
