I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everyone. My first post here, and I really hope someone out there might be able to help. I'm pretty worried about losing all my files.

I have had a Western Digital externall hard drive permanently attached to my wife's old desktop PC (which runs XP) for a year or so. I've always been very pleased with it - it connected perfectly, and it has always just shown up in My Computer there as an extra drive. Perfect. However, that PC was getting old and the memory nearly full, so I copied all my important files (family photos, etc.) to my WD HDDm disconnected it from the old desktop, connected it to my much newer laptop (which runs Windows 7), and hey presto - it appeared in Computer. Again, perfect, no problem. However, I realised that I had not transferred all the files I needed from the old desktop to the HDD, so I had tp disconnect the HDD from the laptop and reconnect it to the desktop again with the intention of transferring the files I'd forgotten to transfer first time around. And this time, the HDD did not appear in My Computer. It DID appear in the little icon, bottom screen right, which you click to safely remove something, and it did show up in Devices, it just didn't show up in My COmputer, so I couldn't access it. The exact same thing happened when I tried to connect it back to my laptop - it's there in the "safely remove" icon and in Devices, but not in My Computer.

I am not very computer literate, but I've tried everything I can think of to fix thi... Read more

It never came back on. When I first got it I blew and vacuum so much black dust I never saw that thick before. I cleaned out both fans with blowing air and vacuum. It worked for 1 1/2 hours. He also had installed windows 10 on it. There is not many programs installed on it, he said he only used it to play games, and there are a few photos in the picture library. Hello Would like to help but first what is the specific model of your PC? Dirty PC is not good to begin with. Upgrading from Windows Vista, amazed the upgrade worked, to Windows 10 is another snag in finding the problem. Suggest you try going back to Windows Vista and diagnose problem with factory operating system. Do you have HP recovery discs for Windows Vista? Maybe you can start there to find problem. Grzy

Yesterday I was burning a CD of some of my music to take to work and listen to. After burning 4-5 songs there was an error (windows media player) and it could not burn the rest.

I hit OK and exited the program, then went to eject myCD, and it did not open. So I go to My Computer to select eject, adn there is no cd drive lsited all of a sudden, and not one in Divice manager either.
The LED light on the cd rom is still glowing green constantly, but it will not respond or try to open when I press eject. And it makes no sounds as if it is trying to read a disc or such.
I tried system restoring to 2 days ago, but it did not fix the problem. I've tried unhooking it, and hooking it back up to no avail. I have tried the Mr Fixit program from the microsoft site, and it DETECTS the problem, and syas 'CDrom/Drive not being recognized" or such, but has a red X next to it saying it could not resolve the problem.
I have also tried going intoo regedit, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Then deleting Upper and lower filters (mine only had upper) and rebooting. And still nothing.

This is very frustrating since I am an avid computer gamer and can no longer insert my game discs to play/etc.

I'd be beyond thankful if someone could help me fix this soon, and please put it in turns/steps I can understand. Aside from gaming and internet, I am a tech novice.

Thank you so much in advance!

A:CD Rom suddenly not showing up in device management/computer etc in Vista &wont eject

Its likely a physical hardware problem. Open up the case, disconnect and reconnect both the power and data cables(on both ends) and see if the drive opens. If not the drive may have failed. The drive should even open with just the power cable connect and the data cable connected, so as a last test try ejecting the tray with only the power connected.

Ok, I have 5 computers on a home network, 4 Windows XP and one Redhat Linux Fedora Core 4. About a month ago, one of the windows boxes suddenly went from about 550Kb/s download to 100Kb/s download from various newsgroups. Also, when trying to pull AND push files to that same box, it is a very slow file transfer.

I didn't load any new software in that time and I waited so long because at the time, the newsgroup server that I am using reported problems associated with Hurricane Rita. This of course doesn't explain the network speed.

I've run speed tests on all the other computers, and they all report download speeds of about 550Kb/s and upload speeds of about 45Kb/s except the one, and it has download speeds of about 100Kb/s and upload speeds the same, about 45Kb/s.

After I noticed the speed reduction, I loaded a firewall, ** Protowall ** and I downloaded the latest beta of Microsoft Anti-Spyware and ran it. Also, I have Norton with the latest updates and it reports no problems.

Please, let me know if you need more info or if someone had any general tips to try. I am about at the end of my rope and reformatting looks like the only other option to me.

Thanks!

Mike in Ohio

Edit: Forgot to say, I went to 3 differnt speed testing web sites, and they all report the download speed the same on that one box, about 100Kb/s and the others are around 500Kb/s

A:1 computer on a network suddenly now has slow file transfer on internet and network

Are all the computers wired similarly? All run to the same router/switch?

You should check the cable of the problematic machine, try using ping to the router with 1400 byte packets. Also, boot up some CD Linux or equivalent and see what speeds you get from there - helps to rule out any problems with the operating system.

Is this a laptop keyboard? If you try and wiggle it around a bit while you are pressing it does it seem to work? Try cleaning your keyboard as something may be stuck under the key and not allowing it to register when pushed.

I am (was) using my ScanJet 5500c conntected to my XP Pro (SP2) notebook and using it every day the last 2 weeks to scan pictures of my daughter who's graduating from high school to make a video presentation for her graduation party. It worked fine last night. However, when I go to scan today, all I get is an almost black image. It is a full 8x11 image and not the normal 5x7. I've tried 3-4 different pix with same result. Lamp is on and moves up and down the scanner bed.
This is what I've tried without fixing the problem:
1) Uninstall the scanner
2) Uninstall scanner software, reboot
3) Reinstall scanner software, reboot
4) Reattached scanner
5) Unplugged both USB and power for more than 60 seconds to reset the scanner
6) Tried different USB cable

Scanner software is HP Photo & Imaging v2.0. I have also downloaded and installed ALL available updates for this scanner from the HP Support website.

Can anyone shed some light on this situation? Is the scanner shot, or is there a fix? Please help.

Regards,

Tor-Eddie

I recently got a new computer loaded with Vista (64 bit). I plugged in my HP deskjet 722c and it worked just fine for a couple of weeks. When my husband recently downloaded a HP update on his computer for his printer which is a HP Photosmart c7100 all in one, my computer quit working.

We have DSL through Embarq (previously Sprint) and are hooked up on a router/modem, but we do not have shared printing (that I know of)

What my printer does: when I send something to print, it looks like it is spooling. And it prints out one blank page regardless of the size of the document. At the same time, the top light starts blinking like it is waiting to print. The print status que claims that the job has completed.

I worked through all of the steps listed on the HP site to deal with this problem but none of the suggested remedies worked because everything is actually set up like it claims it needs to be.

Any suggestions? I don't really want to buy a new printer because it sounds like Vista has printer problems period. Is it just Vista?

A:HP deskjet 722 suddenly quit printing on Vista

Hi if your printer is hooked up to your computer in vista then you need to go to the control panel and click on clasic mode on the upper left hand side of the window. Then click on the device manager. When in the device manager you have to click on the view menu and then view all. You must do this in order to see the printer. Right click on the printer and then click update driver and install the old driver.

Important
Make sure the driver and or firmware you sellected is the correct one.

If you did not install a firmware update then this should fix the problem. If you installed a firm ware patch then find an older one if your seccond attempt at installing the same firm ware patch doesn't work.

If your printer is a network printer then you may have to install an older copy of the firm ware or attempt the latest patch again.

Since my computer is completely dead, there is litle I can do to troubleshoot at this point. I appreciate any input you may be able to provide.

I would expect it to be slightly warm but not hot. Your symptoms can be a bad charger (most likely) or a motherboard. Are you still under warranty?

Hi guys,

This just happened recently, and I have been trying to debug but can't. Here's the scene.

I have a desktop computer. It is connected to a netgear router, via direct ethernet cable. I also have 2 laptops that connect wirelessly.

Everyone can get on the internet. But I'm having some sharing issues. The two laptops can see each other in the network. But they can't see the desktop, and the desktop can't see the laptops.

I have verified that all are part of the same workgroup. I even tried changing the desktop's workgroup to something else, and then back, but still no joy.

What am I missing?

The only thing that's happened recently, is that Time Warner has been redoing our internet access. They have not come into my house, just redoing stuff on the street. But since we can all get on the internet, I don't think that has anything to do with it. But it's the only change recently.

Please email me your thoughts. I value this forum a great deal!
Best,

Hi guys!

I have a weird problem with my desktop (Its running windows 7). I live in a shared house and im at the other side of the house to where the router is located. I usually have a wireless connection but the signal is weak and sometimes fails so I bought a pair of homeplugs also. I leave both plugged in at the same time which results in the computer having a preference for the wired connection over wireless. Up until now this has worked perfectly for me and ive never had connection issues.

Basically, one day I turned on the computer and the wired connection had changed to a public network symbol (rather than home) and displayed 'unidentified network' and 'no network access'. The wireless connection tried to kick in at this point but was either unable to connect to the network OR it did manage to connect but was unable to access anything on the web, although occasionally it manages to very very very slowly load a simple web page. Noone else in the house has any issues AFAIK and I can even connect fine using my xbox and iphone.

If I try to diagnose the problem for my connections it tells me that "local area connection" doesnt have a valid IP configuration for the wired connection whereas for the wireless connection it tells me pretty much nothing. I have tried all the standard stuff - resetting/restarting the router, checking cables, enabling/disabling the connections and setting a manual IP... all to no avail.

I have an Inspiron 1525. I've had it for a year and a half (ish). I had an issue for a while where my computer would just turn off if you put too much pressure on the under side of it below the touch pad. I just ignored the spot, and went about life. Tonight, I was trying to watch a show on casttv.com and it wouldn't load the episode. I tried another, nothing, another, nothing, etc. So I decided to restart. During restart it shut off, so I clicked it to go back on, and it would say "start windows repair" or continue normally. Both options I chose would load for a few seconds, then just turn off. I finally got mad and threw it on the couch next to me, at which point my boyfriend tried and it started absolutely no problem at all as if I was imagining the whole thing. Whatever. So now it turns on fine, but the stupid thing won't connect to my wireless network. I have restarted 6 times, it just won't connect. I'm using my boyfriend's computer, which is (obviously) fine, as I'm using it to write this.
What could possibly be the problem? Why would it not restart completely, and why would it suddenly just not work on my network, which is running fine on a computer a foot away from it?
I'm on Vista. Of course, why not.

EDIT: When I search for a network, it says that the connection is poor and that the signal strength has 0 bars, and sometimes won't even find it, but this computer (6 inches away) will find it to be 5 bars. Thw ne... Read more

I followed the directions and everything and the installation went great. i'm just curious as to why. (both computers are connected)

A:Computer Not Showing Up On Network

The primary cause of this is normally the workgroup name you are using for your peer-to-peer network. Check the Workgroup name on both machines. They have to be "indentical" - it is case sensative - so make sure the letter case is the same on both machines. Try that first and then reboot if you made any changes.

The second thing to check is if both machines have netbios over tcp enabled in the Advanced properties of the network configuration on both machines.

Start with that and let us know the results.

Thanks,
Mav

A:Computer Is Not Showing Up On THe Network

if you are on a router - or are you cabled together ?

if a router
192.168.0.1 - will be the gateway

and then each PC will have another number so his 192.168.0.2 and yours 192.168.0.3

firewalls are big problems with this sort of thing - if you each have a firewall - put in the firewall a range of IPs that are allowed to access - should be a setting somewhere

make sure you are in the same workgroup

make sure you have file and printsharing enabled on both machines

do an ipconfig /all
start>run>cmd>ipconfig /all
on each PC
then try and ping that IP

There are 2 other computers connected to the network in this house and one more that is linked to the router. All 3 of these computers are fine and have no problems at all.

I used to have no trouble browsing, but things have become so slow lately that I get constant disconnects from Windows Live Messenger, Facebook struggles to load, I can't even use YouTube anymore... Yet all of the other computers are fine. I did upgrade to Windows 7 5 months or so back and I replaced the network card in this PC a couple of months ago, but its only been since last week that I've been having these problems.
I have always had a decent 3-4 bars on the network signal icon, but this sometimes drops to 2 bars - which it never used to do. What makes it more suspicious is that the router is only in the room next door and I have a long range adaptor...
The last time I had a disconnect on the computer, I switched to my phone's Wi-Fi, and it couldn't find the router for a while. Yet all the other computers are working fine still.

Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem? I'm very capable with computers in general and I have kept this machine in very good working order, so I'm sure it's not a virus and I wouldn't have thought it to be a registry corruption or anything like that, but this really has me stumped...

Printer Networking Problem -- Computer Can't Connect Wirelessly

My husband's Dell laptop runing XP Pro has been part of a home network we have had for about a year. He had no problem before printing wirelessly to our HP DSC 2400 All in One printer. However, several days ago (15 Sept. 2005), he could no longer access our hard-wired computer, the HP Media Center m470n desktop running XP Pro.
The symptoms:

1. The computer would not show up in My Network Places in his Windows Explorer. His computer could not find any of the folders (C Drive and My Documents) that we had designated as shared on the HP desktop.

2. He could no longer access the printer. He inadvertantly uninstalled the HP printer from his Printers and Faxes list. When he tries to use the Add New Printer Wizard, the HP printer will not show up on the list of computers on the network.
3. Once or twice the printer did show up on the list of computers, but it asked for him to enter a username and password. He never had used a password before. "Guest" was displayed on this, but was "grayed out."

Other facts:
--All of our computers are in the same workgroup, MSHOME.
--His computer can ping the HP desktop, and the HP desktop can ping his computer.
--I can access his computer by typing its IP address into the Run command line box.
--We have a cable modem by Scientific-Atlanta; our ISP is Comcast. We have wireless networking with a LinkSys router.

I'm not certain but it probably is the cause as I believe they all need to be in the same named group.

A:While typing network password, computer Suddenly Reboots - WinXP

Hi, did you make any changes to your pc, before this happened?
Will it start in Safe Mode - tap F8 as the pc is starting up?

If you can get into Safe Mode.
Start > Run > Type
msconfig
Click Launch System restore.

Then choose a date prior to the problem.
http://bertk.mvps.org/
======
If the above does not work and you have the Xp install Cd.
Boot from the Xp install Cd...when prompted press [R]
Choose Windows installation [typically by pressing [1]
When prompted for password.
Press Enter.
Type
chkdsk /r
[note space after chkdsk]
Let it scan the pc.
When fininshed.
Type Exit
And press Enter.

Here's my puzzling problem: I have two computers (both Windows 98) networked with a Microsoft Wireless Router. Both computers can access the Internet and I can share files between the two computers. On one computer I can access the Base Station Managing Tool and configure my network with no problem. On the other however, I cannot open the Managing Tool, as the option does not even show up. It says I am not connected to the network, and I am not connected to the Internet, even though I am. Any ideas why this would be?

Hey everyone, I have a concern that I can't seem to figure out. We have about fifty employees in our business that are all hooked up to different printers on our network. This one lady cant connect to any of the printers for some reason. She was connected
to them for years just like everyone else, now if she tries to print something the list of printers never appear for her to choose. When I go into "Devices and Printers", the page loads VERY slow but normally will show the printers there after a
few minutes (but not always). Ive tried rebooting her computer, resetting the print spooler, resetting the printers and even running programs like ccleaner to clear out data to try to make room.
Sometimes after a reboot, the programs will find the printers and print but then after a couple minutes, they wont be located again. Its weird because the other person in her office can print and she is connected to all the same printers. For now, ive just
been having that employee do the printing for both of them till I can fix the issue. The computer is running Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Let me know if your guys think of anything.
Thanks,
Andrew

I am not 100% certain when it started popping up, but one day browsing through my computer, I noticed under networks, my computer would recognize 3 items: my computer, my computer as a media device, and a second computer named:YOUR-4DACD0EA75. What is this? I am not experiencing anything unusual since making the discovery, with the exception of some very inconsistent shutdowns, which i have not been able to replicate. I am mostly afraid I have some malware, adware, something that doesn't belong.

What is strange though, is that after a clean reinstall, the moment my computer is back on the network, it shows up, without even having the chance to visit any sites online. Any guidance would be especially appreciated!

Ok I am having a problem getting this computer to view other computers on the network, it does not even show my share files or the workgroups name. I remember before I could at least see "home" then open then see my files.

I am on vista business and I am not sure whats going on, if someone would be willing to go through the basic steps with me one more time. To make sure I did not miss anything I would appreciate it!

I have UAC off, windows firewall on, private network, file print sharing, find domain, and thats it really. I even shared some random file and also set it to security level for everyone and guest. I have the client for microsoft, file print sharing, linklayer topology, and ip-6 all checked and installed.

Then in the firewall I have all the exceptions set to allow anything to do with sharing on as well.

Not so sure what else to do really?

Also I doubled checked twice and followed the steps on This blogspot page, I also tried to follow Bob's pages. Not sure whats going on to tell you the truth, I stopped trying to use it a while ago and turned off the services in controle panal and also disables a lot of crap, I just recently re-enabled them and double checked and even checked the help file in windows.

I just can't get it to show anything, I used to even see my router and invoke it now I cant!

Information to help you, to help me!

I have three computers running over a combo wired / wireless network. The basement unit is connected via a home wiring adapter and the main unit and laptop are connected via 802.11n wireless. The basement and laptop are running Win7 Pro and main is running Win7 Home Premium.
On the laptop and basement units I can see all my NAS devices under Computer:
(Drat! Board won't let me insert screen shot. Here's the Technet link: Network devices don't show in tree view)
On the main unit, it is the only one that shows (Black Beauty). All units are set to the same workgroup and network settings. What caused this? I use the NAS units for backup and media servers but can't save to them now because Windows doesn't see them, especially the GoFlex. MS Technet is a big goose egg on solving this.
Thank you.

Hello All:

I have two computers networked...A and B. Computer B Network Neighborhood
doesn't see itself sometimes but sees computer A. So I reinstalled Windows
hoping to resolve the problem. Both computers can see each other by mapped
drives. After reinstalling windows on computer B Network Neighborhood
doesn't work at all. I get an error "Unable to browse the network", but the
network does work using mapped network drives on both computers.
I did have a problem with
"file and printer sharing for microsoft networks" on B computer. I went
into network icon and it did not show file and printer sharing in the list.
Tried to install it numerous times but would not install. I would reboot
the computer like it asked me to but it wasn't there. Then about the fifth
time it finally installed. All this time Network Neighborhood would not see
B computer from A computer but mapped networked drives worked from B to A
computer and A to B "Whew" that was a mouth full. Then finally everything
started working correctly on both computers. I really don't know how that
all happened. Oh by the way, I forgot to mention I'm running Win98SE on
both machines.

Any possible ideas as to what may have happened??
I'll keep in touch in case it faults again.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what might have happened?

Thanks much in advance

A:Network Neighborhood quit

Sounds like the network was functioning all the time since you could connect to both computers. It was just the browsing portion of it that wasn't. This has always been a bit complicated and sometimes just takes the computers being on for a while before the browsing will start to work.

If you only want to network those 2 PCs, all you need is a cross-over cable and a Networkcard in each PC. Make sure both PCs are in the same Workgroup. Set one PC to fixed IP 192.168.1.1 with subnet-mask 255.255.255.0, the other PC to 192.168.1.2 and the same subnet-mask. Install TCP/IP and activate File and Printer Sharing and off you go.

I am going to thank all in advance for any help you can give. I have been working on this now for a few days and am making no progress. I have read through every available forum message I could find, tried most of it and am still at a loss.

A little history:

Wn XP Desktop wired to router - connection perfect
Win XP Old laptop wired to router - connection perfect
Vista laptop wireless to router - connection dropped

Wireless has always functioned perfectly until yesterday. Booted up machine - no wireless connection. I wired the laptop to the router, no connection. I wired the laptop direct to the modem, no connection. It's like someone just turned them off.

I went to the Netgear site and checked the router status, wireless status, etc and everything looks fine. I admit the firmware needs to be updated but with two machines working fine and the laptop functioning fine for the last 11 months, I don't want to do that just yet.

I am pasting information from this machine below per instruction from other posts. If you need further information don't hesitate to ask.

Hi folks. Just wondering if someone here has come across this kind of problem before. I run 2 HDD, both are Maxtor 60gb, the Master holds Win 2000, Win XP Pro, and Redhat 7.3. The 2nd HDD holds 3 partitions, I use these for storage of various data - Multimedia, Webdev, MP3, ect. Here's the prob - On reboot earlier today, the 2nd HDD suddenly showed up as unformatted. I've booted into a couple different DOS based diag apps, and get the same result, that the partitions are unformatted, including Partition Magic. The 3 partitions are intact, just unformatted. Which, of course, renders the data useless, as I can't get to it. Any advice here would be greatly appreciated. - Thank You. -Ed Parrott

I ran Kaspersky as my computer was way overdue for a full scan and it scanned a BullGuard file without any issues to report, but the thing is I've never used BullGuard, never downloaded it, never been anywhere near it. So I took a look in the folder it's nestled in - Windows > Applications > Tools > Security > BullGuard

There are nine files in the folder, one a video aptly titled Video, two PNG files, two .EXE files (one is called BgLicTool and the other BullGuard90_64), a file called licensekey.dat, a VBScript file called Bullguard, and two Windows Command Scripts named License and Install. Are any of these legitimate files? Can I delete them without problems? Kaspersky can't quarantine them and I haven't tried to move or delete them. I haven't run either of the EXE files or opened the video or images. I would just go ahead and delete them but I've had serious problems trying to remove fake programs before =/ The more I type the sillier this question seems but I thought I'd make sure.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, don't know if that helps. The computer is slower than usual but nothing else weird's been happening other than finding these files.

Hey everyone,

Today my external hard drive is suddenly not showing up in my computer or on my one file manager program. It is really weird cause the computer reads it and it comes up in disk management and in my device and everything says it is working fine.

I check for updates and everything with no luck. Rebooted it and tried all the simple fixes like that. I dual boot this computer and the external drive pops up on OS X Lion fine and lets me access it and everything, so it doesn't have to do with the hard drive itself.

It has been working fine for months and I really don't think I changed anything in the last day or two with the computer for it to suddenly not be working. Very strange problem. Windows basically says its working fine except it just won't show up in My Computer. I tried connecting with both a Firewire cord as well as USB and neither work. I spent hours checking all over the internet and still no luck.

Any advice? Please help!!

Thanks,
Dom

Hi all, I recently got Windows 7 64 bit.
the day i got the machine home and running, i connected my USB harddisk and installed some stuff i had backed up from it.

But suddently i dont see the USB drives when i connect them, i have 2 and none of them is detected, or will they are detected and the "Safelly Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon comes up in my right lower corner as it should, and when i click it my devices is shown by their propper names and i can safely remove them aswell. but they are not shown under "my computer" and my anti virus dosnt scan them aswell.

Tho if i plug in my USB flash pin from my key ring it finds it, anti virus scans it and it shows up just as it should.

Can anyone help me solve this as im really confused by now.

Welcome to SF, Jimkromann.

Could be a driver conflict.

Type MSCONF, go to startup tab, and uncheck everything EXCEPT microsoft items (for testing purposes).

Reboot and see if your usb devices are recognized.
