Text cursor (caret) movement becomes slow

Q: Text cursor (caret) movement becomes slow

On my laptop, the text cursor or caret (not the mouse pointer) zips right along normally, but every so often it slows down considerably--almost as if it is pausing to think before it moves to the next character. Once this problem appears, it appears in all programs. If I shut down all applications, it still remains. However, if I restart, the problem goes away.

Just to clarify, I am not talking about the blink rate of the cursor. I mean the movement of the text cursor up and down, left and right--either in response to the arrow keys or to typing. I have not changed any settings to cause this. For instance, my keyboard repeat rate is at the maximum. Even if there was a setting that caused it, it's one that resets every time the computer is restarted.

I am using Windows XP Professional SP3.

I'd appreciate any help or suggestions you have. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Text cursor (caret) movement becomes slow

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Text cursor (caret) movement becomes slow

I thought I'd add my specs, which somehow I forgot to put in there last time.
CPU: Core 2 Duo
OS: Windows XP SP3
This is a laptop, so of course the keyboard is integrated and not something separate that I can replace. (I don't think its a keyboard thing anyway, but I thought I'd mention it.)

(I'll only bump once, I swear )

Affected App: Word 2003 (has current updates)Just yesterday, when trying to edit a Word doc, I discovered my arrow keys were behaving oddly. I used to be able to hold down L or R arrows and quickly zip thru a line or many lines, but not now. The cursor moves very slowly, one letter at a time, while the hour glass blinks furiously...about 5-6 times per character. I just timed how long it takes to go from left to right margin on one line, and that's 15 seconds! Also, take the mouse and click anywhere in the doc, and the HG fires up right over the insertion point, while rapidly blinking briefly. It does this every time you pick a new spot in the doc and only Word seems to be affected. (The cursor zooms right along while editing this post here...tho I just noticed that the insertion point cursor does change here while typing - flashing to the hour glass with every key stroke - and don't recall that behavior before.) I downloaded Malwarebytes last night, did a full scan and found 2 trojans, which I deleted. I regularly use ESET v4 Security Suite full time, and did a complete scan after that, which turned up nothing. I've checked everything from "options" in Word, to Device Manager, and everything else I could think of. Of course, I went to "keyboard" and have that set for fastest repeat...which it does with characters, but not with arrowing left or right. Searched relentless all over the net, using a variety of search strings, and found nothing rel... Read more

A:Arrow keys cause slow Cursor movement in Word 2003

No one's suggested a solution thus far, so thought I'd add this update:I found & downloaded a MS "Support Template" that contains several macros, which you run in Word's safe mode (run: winword /a), and then can troubleshoot various suspects that may be causing the problem. (If interested, one of several good links for tools/option settings for Word is: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/820917/).While running various 'fixes' I discovered something all the more perplexing about this problem. If the mouse pointer is off the word doc page...as in on the toolbar or off to the side, etc...then the cursor works fine with the A&R arrow keys!! It's only if the mouse pointer is on the document page that the arrow keys (when scanning from one end of text line to the other end), slow to a stuttering crawl and the hourglass flickers rapidly. As I did install Logitech Setpoint for my cordless mouse yesterday, I thought that may be the problem (since the online version is an 'upgrade' from when I bought it, and now it's 'Vista compatible), so I uninstalled it, hoping that could be the source of conflict. No luck; that didn't change anything. The fact that the arrow keys will function normally...but only if the mouse pointer is completely off the freaking page...makes this all the more weird. Sure wish someone had an idea of what to try next.Stymied,Mike

My computer is running too sluggishly. I have done my share of hard drive cleanup, run thorough spyware and AV scans and defragged my hard drive. My system, however, is still running like a turtle and my CPU usage would sometimes reach up to around 90% although there are very few programs that are running.
The cursor is also very slow to respond and the words that I type takes awhile to appear on the screen. I appreciate any help you can give me.

I have a laptop HP Dv1000

I about to do a Nuke wipe of my D drive and full reload if something here does not cure the virus I have.

The Problem: my Synaptics touch pad, in certain applications, has a mind of it's own, the cursor scrolling to the right constantly. It also does it in MTBR.com forums when posting in an existing thread, whether the browser is in Google Chrome or in Firefox. If I use the tool bar at the top, it alternates continously through all the tab selections, making it impossible to choose the tab I need.

I have reloaded Synaptics touchpad drivers from HP for my model computer to no avail.

Hi, I have this problem with my laptop Sony VAIO VGN-NS11J.
The problem is that while typing text the Cursor will either jump back into previously typed text or will sometimes initiate another page on it's own.
This is very annoying as I cannot type well enough to watch the screen and type - and I have to look at the keys as I type.
This then necessitates me having to go back correct and re-type my text.
I have windows 7 installed on this laptop.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

I don't know if this belongs in this catagory or not.
Sometimes when I turn on my computer and the desktop comes up, my Cursor goes all over the screen,up,down, side to side, just randomly all over. I am using a corded optical mouse. I tried unplugging it but has no effect on the cursor.
I have to turn off the master switch on the power box, then wait a few seconds and turn it back on and re-boot, or try to catch it and restart the computer.
I would appreciate any info as to how to correct this problem if possible. I dont know where to start to correct it if it can be done. Anyone have an idea where the problem would be at?

How can one control where the cursor goes in a protected Excel 2000 worksheet? When you have two unlocked columns next to each other on a protected worksheet, by default, hitting the Tab key moves the cursor left to right. I want it to move the cursor DOWN thru the cells in the first column and after the last cell in that column, to move to the first cell in the next column.

Is there a way to do that without using complicated macros?

Good morning:

When I type the cursor will jump to another spot among the text previously typed or even off the page which means I have to grab the mouse, delete the misplaced text and return the cursor to the place where I was typing. This is very annoying and disruptive.

Have spoken to a number of friends and several have claimed to have this problem while others don't know what I am talking about. Seems to have some connection with touch typing using all fingers. Have began to wonder if it is connected with the fact that I learned to type on a manual 22 inch Remington a thousand years ago and might be hitting the keys too hard.

This problem seems worse with some programs such as e-mails however it seems very solid when typing this question.

Would welcome any suggestions as to why this happens.

Thinkpad X1 Tablet 3rd GenWindows 10 (v1809) The on-screen mouse cursor does not move smoothly when using the TrackPoint.  I can only describe the movement as "coarse" compared the same movement when using the TouchPad.  The TouchPad moves the mouse cursor with perfect fluidity.  Using the TrackPoint the mouse moves like it's locked into a stairstep pattern when moving diagonally--up a bit, over a bit, up a bit, over a bit.  With the TrackPad, the cursor moves truly diagonally.   Furthermore, ocasionally the mouse will just jump several inches from one point on the screen to another. Is anyone else experiencing this?  (I have updated all my drivers--display, TrackPoint, BIOS, etc.)  I'm thinking I have a bad keyboard, but I don't have another X1T3 to compare with. Thanks.

On every P50 I've tried and across all Windows versions, the cursor does not move smoothly when making precision (i.e. slow or very slight) movements. Try slowly moving a finger across the trackpad, or gently rolling a finger back and forth--the cursor will skip about 40 or 50 pixels (!) before coming to rest. The issue is trivial to reproduce; in fact, there's no need to even specifically try to reproduce it, as it happens hundreds of times a day during normal use. It's bad enough dealing with it while trying to do mundane activities like browsing, but even worse is that it effectively makes using things like Photoshop outright impossible. Since there have been fixes for other mouse/trackpad/touchstick driver bugs, can we please get a fix for this as well?

I thought I'd post this as a solution rather than a problem as it appears to be a common problem.

I recently bought a new Sony Vaio laptop and got on great with it until I noticed an aggravating problem.

Whenever I was typing some text, the cursor had an annoying habit of jumping all over the place, so I'd find myself typing text in the middle of a sentence I'd completed earlier.

It turns out that if you use a mouse without disabling the touchpad, the two conflict with each other, which results in this erratic cursor behaviour.

Why use a mouse you may ask. Well, I suffer with arthritis from time to time and a wireless mouse is easier to use than the touchpad.

So, if anyone has a Sony Vaio and is experiencing the same problem just go to:

Start>All Programs>Vaio Control Center>Categories Tab>Expand Keyboard & Mouse>Double-click Built-in Pointing Device>Uncheck Enable box>Apply>OK>Yes.

This disables the touchpad and stops the erratic cursor movement.

In short, my Intel Core i7-2600 @ 3.40 GHz with 8 GB RAM has some (one or more) programs running in the background that I cannot find.

I ran an Eset online scan (found 2 problems) and ran Malwarebytes twice and still have issues.

I am hoping you can help solve the computer problems I am having.

Following is the DDS.txt file and attached is the zipped Attach.txt file.

Thanks in advanced.

Hi Testing12,
Welcome to the BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum.
My name is Mako and I will be helping you with your computer problems.
Before we begin, please note the following:
Please stay with the topic until I tell you that your system is clean. Missing symptoms does not mean that everything is okay.
The instructions given are for your system only!
Please do not run any tools until requested! The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.
If you don't understand something don't hesitate to ask before running the tools.
Now let's get started...
You said you've already ran ESET Online Scanner and MalwareBytes. Can you paste the content of the ESET logfile in your next reply and attach the Malwarebytes logfiles please?
To obtain the logfile from MalwareBytes you can start the program and go to the Logs tab. You may attach the results of both scans.
For the ESET Online scan log: it should be located at the following location, unless you saved it elsewhere: C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Last but not least, I saw in your log a reference to AdwCleaner. Did you use that as well? If so, please attach its logfile also.

With no warning, flashing opaque circles appear, cursor jumps around and random applications start running.  Other things that have happened include randomly printing the screen.  Typically the calculator appears.  Sometimes, it stops on its own.  Other times, I have to use the power button to shut down and regain control of the computer.  It occurs when disconnected from the Internet as well as when connected.  There are no other powered devices nearby except for a HP Officejet Pro 6830 printer.  One "solution" that I discovered on-line is to disable the HID Compliant Touch Screen.  While this may stop the problem, I would like to get it solved so I can use the touch screen as designed.  Thanks for any help.

It's my first playing counter strike and when i start playing, i have a problem because he movement of the players is too slow. is there a command to make the more fast like real?
Please help me. Thanks a lot!

A:Movement is too slow

What do you mean, it's too slow? Is everyone else around you moving faster? Or is everyone moving at the same slow rate? Is it just choppy, like people make quick jumps from here to there?

OK, this is just weird to me; but Halo 2 seems to move slow, not choppy, but it seems to take a long time to rotate left or right.

Now granted, I have been playing UT3 (demo) lately, so of course the game speed in Halo 2 is not going to be as fast, but possibly something is wrong with the controls; the up and down movement seems to be faster than side to side somehow?
Even the speed walking forward seems slow.

It really shouldn't be my system (specs in signature) if it runs Unreal Tournment 3 ok then it should easily run Halo 2.

Does Halo 2 for PC just suck? I remember it wasn't bad for the original xbox.
Maybe I should just stick with Unreal or Crysis and forget about it, but I enjoyed Halo 1 for PC and Halo 3 for xbox 360 and neither game seemed slow. And I don't have an xbox 360 now, nor do I own Crysis or Unreal Tournament 3. So I would be playing Halo 2 if the movement didn't seem so slow.

I'm just wondering if anyone else had a similar problem.

If Halo 2 just sucks for PC then that will be reason for me to go put windows XP back on my PC. The only reason I am running Vista was for Halo and it came with my computer. I don't really notice any other advantages to Vista and it uses up more resources.

I have a Sony Vaio Model VGC RC310G Desktop computer. It came with Windows XP OS and I later upgraded to Windows 7. Everything has been  working fine for a couple of years. Recently I noticed the hard drive was starting too make noise and the computer was running slower. I installed a new SATA drive. I ultimately made and image of the old drive onto the new drive.
Since doing this Ii have had issues with thhe mouse movement, ie not moving smoothly across the screen, will not allow me to complete a selection to copy by right clicking, and also having to left click two or three times to be recognized. The keyboard is also intermintent with the keys typed. Sometime you may have to wait for the typing to catch up, or will not type keys you have pressed. The keyboard and mouse are both Logitec and wireless. I have tried other wireless keyboards and mice with the same results.
The sound also stuters when  playing as though it is skipping.
Ii also have an issue with getting an Unknown Device on a USB? At times it will just pop on and off. Everything that is plugged in to a USB port seems to be working fine, with the exception of the thinngs mentioned above.
I am using Norton 360 for my antivirus software and have had a subscription with them for 4 or 5 years.
I hope you can help, as I am amost to the point of buying another computer.

A:Slow mouse movement, stuturing of sound...

The only thing I can think of is to uninstall the drivers for wireless mouse and keyboard and re-install them, and you might as well do the same for your audio drivers. 'Start - Control Panel - Programs and features' since you say you are running Win 7, then select the relevant drivers one at a time and delete them.
It would be a good idea to connect a USB or PS2 connected mouse and keyboard while you do this - or you will lose control ability as you delete the drivers !  I've made this mistake !
You should have the drivers on the CD that came with your mouse and keyboard, and you can get the audio drivers from the Sony web-site.

My computer crashed after a power outage and I had to replace the power supply (same specs as original, but with quieter fan).

I have the HP Pavilion a1630n ('rents don't trust me to build a computer ).

It has 2 gigabytes of RAM and even my very lacking 512 MB laptop doesn't have this issue. I would truly appreciate any help that could be given.

A:VERY (!) slow scrolling and jerky window movement.

What brand and spec is the power supply you put in?

When moving the cursor with the trackpad, i've noticed that slow movement will usually result in a jump of cursor of a number of pixels (around 40pixels/8-10mm cursor movement)a search online is mostly useless apart from an arch linux forum where atleast 4 others are also reporting the same issue with jumping with slow finger movement. I've noticed this problem on both linux (Fedora22) and windows OS (win10, via inplace upgrade from lenovo win8.1 factory image), so it's not OS specific - definately a hardware/firmware issue. aside from a warranty claim (which i'm doubtful would actually fix the issue), what else could it be - anyone else experiencing the issue?

I have an annoying problem with the touchpad sensitivity on my new work notebook. When holding down the left or right mouse button underneath the touchpad the sensitivity of the touchpad greatly increases with about 100%. When the buttons are pressed I can move the cursor about twice the distance compared to normal. I want the sensitivity to stay the same, regardless if I'm dragging something/selecting multiple items or just moving the cursor as normal. File management becomes a pain when it's like this. - My previous notebook, also from HP, did not do this, so this is something new with this computer.- No acceleration or "enhance pointer precision" is enabled anywhere.- If I connect an external mouse, it does not behave this way.- I also noticed that if I double tap and hold and drag with the touchpad the sensitivity is unchanged.- Likewise, clicking an external mouse button, but dragging with the touchpad is unaffected.- And also the mouse button above the touchpad (belonging to the TouchStyk) is also not causing this for the touchpad.- The touchpad left and right buttons don't magically increase the sensitivity of the external mouse either. It's ONLY the touchpad's physical left and right mouse button that raise the sensitivity of ONLY the touchpad when depressed. I don't see any setting for this. On the Synaptics TouchPad tab in Mouse Properties there's a button to "Microsoft Mouse and touchpad", but there's no option about this. In any case, this... Read more

Like the title says. I have noticed today, when I my firefox browser green circle was not moving while searching. I would move the mouse and the circle would move if the mouse was active, also it will move if I repeatedly press spacebar.

I have an I7 950, all cores are not past 7%, I see no resources getting nabbed in the resource monitor. This build is two months old.

All processes are extremely slow. Yet CPU monitors shows low usage and ram is at 50%.

I have scanned for viruses, none found, a few cookies resolved.

Any body ever had a problem like this?

Thanx for any help with this. I am confused with this problem.

Hello all,

Been having an annoying problem on various forums - the text cursor will disappear during typing.

Frequently when I try to move the cursor around with the arrows (or click to place it with the mouse) it will disappear and I have no idea where I'm about to type.

Anyone else come across this?

I'm running vista on a Compaq Presario laptop and I've been having issues with the cursor. More specifically when there's the option to click "yes" or "cancel" it shuffles very quickly between the two. Sometimes when I'm typing, the text cursor moves back to a place I've already typed. Other than that, it moves to the right on it's own, moreso than the left. But I often hear the sound that you get when you backspace and there's no more text, and it just makes that sound repeatedly, I usually just mute the computer. I've run out of ideas of what it could be. Can anyone help, or suggest something that I could do, or a problem that may be happening?
