Safe Mode Monitor Problems

Q: Safe Mode Monitor Problems

I have Win XP Pro. When I go to safe mode, the monitor is so fuzzy(3 lines for 1) that I can't read the screen. Are there any settings that I can change so that I can read the screen? My monitor is SVA and works fine in full mode.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

When you go into safemode, only the drivers need to run are loaded. It sounds like your monitor or video driver aren't being loaded for some reason. Is this onboard video or a video card?

hello all. Iv got a prob with my monitor.....

i was in the middle of a game and my monitor just went black and said 'power save mode off mode' then it went black again. i tried to bring it back up by turning it off and on etc but it wouldnt work. I was starting to get stressed so i turned it off by the switch (as if that would help!), waited a minute then turned it on again. My computer is on fine, but my monitor is on standby(amber). I dont know the model of monitor and it isnt possible to use a different one at the moment. Im using xp and i cant access anything on my computer. my dad ($teve) is out... so you are my second option.

There is no VGA mode option in start up because a former user on my computer changed the start up so that that page doesn't come up.....

How else do I start in Safe Mode on NT? The original problem is I changed the monitor res too high (it's gone "balistic")and need to switch it back to a lower res.

Do I need to get back into NT to get that page back up(how?)or is there a key board option for Safe mode??

As far as I know, the only way is through the boot.ini option.

Now, let's see of we can help save the situation? Is the drive that the boot.ini file on FAT16? If so, the solution is easy. Boot off an old DOS boot disk (or you can get one from www.bootdisk.com), and edit the boot.ini file and add this line:

multi(x)disk(x)rdisk(x)partition(x)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation Version 4.00 [VGA mode]" /basevideo /sos

The numbers in the Multi, disk, rdisk and partition brackets should be exactly the same as the entry for normal Windows NT.

If it is NTFS, then you will need to get an NT boot disk. This is not that difficult. All you need is any disk formatted in NT, and add the following files to it:

And edit the boot.ini file on the floppy disk with the line above.

That should get you in, to change the settings.......

And in future.... NT has a test button... this is what it is there for

Cleaned the registry with Glare and CCleaner;
Changed Power schemes to "Always on";
Used System Restore(in Safe mode);
Ran Dr. Web,Super AntiSpyware,TDSSKiller.

this is a many faceted and increasing in facets issue (ill try to make it as short as possible);

the male side of my video cable connection (the part on the motherboard) had bent pins; the pins were unbent and the cable was able to fit back in, BUT

the picture was garbled--wrong colors, moving lines, etc. the people at a tech store told me the video cable was pinched and knowing that it had been jammed in the hinge for a while, i believed it extremely feasible. I finally ordered a new video cable but replaced it, and to no avail. the picture may have been slightly better--but not significantly if so; additionally (and im not sure if it was this way the first time as well) the computer was displaying at the size of the external.

i restarted, and reazlied that the laptop screen displayed nothing at startup, until logged in--exactly like the external. i figured that at least a portion of what was going on was the computer was sending the external screen signal to the laptop.

things i've tried:

-reseating both ends of the new video cable MANY times
-turning the computer off, taking out battery, holding start button, putitng battery back in, restarting
-every variation of screen resolution/external monitor setting
-pluggin in the external, putting laptop to sleep, unpluggnig external
-reinstalling video/image drivers
function key combinations

First things first, I've had a serious issue ever since my computer was reset through recovery mode..the second Firefox loads in normal mode, it completely freezes up, and I'm not even able to end the process through task manager. I tried loading with Internet Explorer, still no luck. Safari same deal. I can only go on the Internet normally through Safe Mode. I have a Windows XP Professional, specifically a Media Center PC. Also, when I log in on windows, there is a "Found New Hardware" box for video controller. I also saw that there was a yellow exclamation near Video Controller and Video Controller (VGA compatible). Is it possible that my video card got corrupted, and is this an easy fix? Please help!

I have a monitor that will not show the desktop when booted into Windows 10. When booted into safe, I can see the desktop fine.

When I initially hooked up the monitor, I saw the desktop just fine. It was at high resolution and everything. However after 1 reboot, I have never again seen the desktop. I see the bios post, the Windows logo, and then nothing.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before or might have some idea of how to fix something of the sort?

It is an UHD monitor. LG 27UD68 and I have a Nvidia Quadro FX 1800 video card.

I do not know if I'm having some sort of video driver issue that I can easily verify, or a monitor issue. I'm filling out a warranty return at the moment, but it would be nice to just simply fix a Windows issue as opposed to shipping my monitor off for the next 3 weeks.

Any thoughts or experiences? Thanks.

When in safe mode windows uses a safe driver and a safe resolution. Try removing the graphics driver in device manager then rebooting and reinstalling it.

Is there a way to force Windows to use the default monitor settings as used in Safe Mode, but when running in normal mode?
My Nvidia GE 6100 graphics began scrambling the screen. Safe mode works ok, but on normal startup, the screen is scrambled or goes fuzzy and everything freezes. I think it's a hardware problem (it started after I added memory) but I want to keep running until it can be fixed. I have updated the drivers but it did not change anything. I tried deleting the Nvidia driver, but Windows keeps finding more.

A:Using Safe Mode default monitor settings

When first boot up hit F8 right after the BIOS screen and choose "low resolution video mode" if it still scrambles the screen it may be a hardware issue with the RAM. I can't remember if it's a laptop card or a desktop card or both.. anyways, If you can get to the device manager quick enough uninstall the video card and choose "delete the driver software" when the dialog box pops up to prompt if you want to delete the driver. This should force windows to use the default VGA driver and then you can download the latest one, relatively speaking, from nVidias site. I would do this while the new RAM you added is out. Once you get the drivers updated plug in the new ram and see if the issues happens again. If it does, get different ram or get all new ram of equal types. I have seen Integrated GPUs freak out over different types(speeds)/sizes of ram..

I have just put together my first computer: Windows 10, Intel i5 4460 Processor, XFX R9 380 Graphics Card, 8GB RAM DDR3, 120GB SSD and a 2TB HDD.

I thought I had managed to do everything correctly. However when trying to launch the Radeon Support app I received the error message: "No AMD Graphics Driver installed...." despite the fact that I had used the auto detect and install feature from AMDs website.

I then started following this guide (https://community.amd.com/thread/180667) to do a Clean Install of the AMD Graphics Drivers.

The issue I now have is that at the booting in safe mode stage I have no signal going to my monitor (have tried DCI and HDMI), and have tried this on two different monitors with the same issue.

I booted in safe mode using Windows+R and msconfig telling the system to start up in Safe Mode with Networking. I think I left it checked so it would always do this and as such am stuck in a loop of being unable to see anything when I start up the computer. Is there any way I can escape this?

I have a Dell Dimension 8100 that started giving me fits a few days ago. No problems whatsoever until one day it would only boot into safe mode--before I could tell it to do that the monitor died. Tried the monitor on another PC and it worked fine. Then I tried another monitor on the Dell, and the same thing happened as with the first monitor, only now the monitor dies before it even loads windows.

I haven't made any system upgrades recently, and it still has most of it's original hardware (I added 1Gig of RAM a year ago).

Any idea what the problem might be, or how I can get the monitor to stay on long enough to try and run a few tests? I'd appreciate any help I can get...

A:PC almost makes it to safe mode, but then the monitor dies

It could be a few typical things: PSU, these come with a cheap 250W generic PoCrap. The video card. It could also be overheating, try removing the side and putting a table fan on it. To troubleshoot for the PSU, try disconnecting the pwer line to Floppy drive and CD/DVD and any other hardware, but not the HDD (you need this to boot to the OS).

Hello to all and thanks for helping.
Did a very dumb thing in retrospect. My computer running windows vista is connected to my flat screen TV with a HDMI cable because monitor is broken. Windows did an update the other day when I turned on my computer. After completing the update Google Chrome repeatedly crashed. I thought it might be a virus and tried to troubleshoot starting with a full scan running Windows Defender in safe mode.
I used the msconfig to select minimal safe mode, and restarted the computer, not realizing the drivers for the external monitor would be disabled. So now I have no way to see the screen that is loading. Is the first screen the logon page, the desktop page in safe mode, or some other page because I keep pulling out the plug to shutdown the computer. In addition I have used the F8 key along the way so don't know if that has altered the original sequence of how pages load. One other thing....I have two users on my computer, so don't know if I have to first choose the user. One requires a password the other doesn't. I was using the one with the password when I wrecked my computer.
I have tried to logon with no luck.
After I think the page is loaded I left click the mouse on the touchpad and then type in my password.
From there I have tried many combinations of keys and shortcuts. I hit the windows key+R , thinking the the run window will pop up. Press the delete key to clear the contents of the run box and left cli... Read more

I have a Dell Dimension 9200 running XP Home Edition and has been running fine with a Dell 2007WFP LCD Monitor connected via a DVI cable with a 256MB ATI RAdeon X1300 Pro PCI Express Graphics Card.

Until this morning that is. When I started up I get to the welcome screen then after around 10 seconds it goes black though the login music sounds and the disk sounds like it's all running as normal I just can't see anything (cursor included).

I use Zone Alarm Security Suite and it completed a system scan yesterday, while updating the anti virus it said that any changes would take effect the next time I started up which was this morning.

I'm able to get to my desktop via safe mode and I've downloaded the latest drivers for the monitor but I can't update the drivers because the Properties option under Settings->Advanced->Monitor is greyed out.

I'm also able to get to the desktop via VGA mode and using a VGA cable though the monitor settings are greyed out here also.
I've also tried removing and replacing the graphics card to no effect.

Totally stumped as to what to do next, the setup's worked fine for a couple of months now so strange that it would stop. I'm a self employed designer so need to find a solution soon before impatient clients start chasing me down!

Thanks in advance.

Hey all, any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Basically I have a USB keyboard on my desktop (using laptop at the moment) and I was unable to get into safe mode normally because the keyboard was only activated once windows had started up. Anyway, so I went into msconfig and set it to automatically start into safe mode (it will do this on every restart automatically - simply restarting the computer will not make it start up normally). Unfortunately, now it's stuck because for some reason my PC does not detect the (normally) working monitor while in safe mode! so now I have no monitor with which to see my way out of safe mode, and it's now stuck like that. This problem started yesterday.

I was in the middle of using Solid Works and the monitor went blank, my PC was still running, the music i still had int he background was still playing even.

The power light on the monitor is not loosing power, a short while after it seems to loose its signal from my PC it displays a standard "searching for signal" type of message, as if it was not connected at all.

After this original occurrence i restarted my computer, and it seemed to be OK while i used it for about a hour. However, later that day when i got back from class it had done it again (sometime while i was away) while it was just sitting at the desktop.

Now the screen seems to "loose signal" within a minute of turning on, unless i run in safe mode where everything seems to work fine.

Things i have tried:

Over Heating:
Video Card, CPU, RAM, the monitor itself, nothing feels even warm to the touch.

Drivers (Video):
The first thing i tried while running in safe mode was to uninstall my old drivers, and then reinstall new ones.

Resolution Issues:
I dont think it could be an issue with resolution, simply because it goes off randomly during normal operation, not at any special time

Viruses etc??:
AVG didn't pick anything up, i uninstalled AVG and got a fresh copy of the the newest version, still nothing. After that yeiled nothing, i uninstalled it and installed the lasted version of McAfee i could get my hands on (8.5i) it also found nothing.

Running Windows XP Professional. Monitor flickers randomly after startup, mouse displays in triplicate (sometimes), task bar clock has a line through it, then the machine restarts. Attempt system restore to an earlier time fails. Malwarebytes, AVG, Avast and SuperAntiSpyware find no malware or virus. Machine has no issues in safe mode with networking. Any idea if I am dealing with an infected machine or video issue? Never seen anything like this. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

I'm running a Dell Inspiron XPS with Windows XP SP2. A few months ago, the laptop was dropped and the monitor was fragged. I've been using it with an external monitor ever since, no problems. Now, however, I need to boot to safe mode so I can run System Restore. But no matter what I do, I can't get the external monitor to kick in so I can see what I'm doing in safe mode.

Normally, the external monitor kicks in automatically as soon as the laptop asks for my username and password during startup. Anything to that point is just flickering lights on the broken monitor - and then the laptop monitor goes dark and the external one takes over.

But whenever I follow the directions for Safe Mode -- hitting F8 to bring up the startup menu -- it seems to prevent the external monitor from taking over. (I've tried repeatedly using the Fn-F7 combo to manually switch it over, but no joy). As a result, I have to navigate the setup menu blind, by guessing where the cursor is according to how many times I've tapped the up or down arrows. This is not working. I can't seem to get into safe mode, and I definitely can't get the external monitor to take over so I can see what I'm doing.

Any help would be most appreciated.

I've been infected, using Windows Vista Home Basic 32bit and it's caused a couple of things to happen: at first I was getting redirected in google and general slowdown. Then I ran Malwarebytes and cleared a bunch of stuff, downloaded and Microsoft Security Essentials, installed some windows updates, then eventually my internet stopped working altogether. Then my monitor stopped working, saying there was an input timing error. I system restored and it didn't do anything except remove Microsoft Security Essentials basically. I can boot in safe mode 640x800 or whatever, and just now found out I can boot in this safe mode with directory assistance and get a normal resolution. Ran Malwarebytes again, removed 8 things... can now connect to the internet in this safe mode, but I know my computer is far from repaired. When I'm using the computer...at very random times, the screen goes black, then a blue window pops up telling me it has gone into power safe mode. I'm assuming, when this happens the computer freezes because, when I hit the hot key I set up on my keyboard to shut down, nothing happens...So, the only option I have is unplugging or holding the power button until the machine shuts off. Then, I restart.

When I try my hotkey for shut down during normal usage, it works just fine, but not when the monitor decides to take a coffee break and leave me hanging.

If I was doing something lame, like work, it wouldn't be so bad, but right in the middle of online gaming??? COME ON!!

Anywho, any suggestions what might be causing this/how to fix it?

To sneak another question in...which might, very well, be linked to the issue above, the computer freezes at random times as well. Especially, at startup. I have to hold the power button 3 or 4 times...with beep beep beeps...until it finally decides to show for work and do what its job description states.

Most of the time, the freezing is right during...or within a minute or two of startup.

I found 7 Steps online outlining possible fixes (taking me through various, progressively more complicated, steps). The final one, suggested to reinstall Windows. GULP...I knew, doing that, I would lose everything...but I did it...after that, is when the monitor problem began. Prior to that (and still currently) the freezing thing.

When my PC worked fine I would get a graphics driver error but Win 7 would recover from it and I would continue as normal.
Now when I boot, my monitor recieves "no signal" from the PC. The PC boots fine except I cannot see anything. This means that I cannot format my PC because I can't see what I'm doing.
Right now I am in safe mode with network connection and I would like to know if I can format in safe mode, and how do I do this. Thanks in advance.

A:Can I format my PC from Safe Mode? Monitor blank if I normal boot...

This isn't the type of problem you solve by reinstalling, except as a last resort.

Have you updated or reinstalled your Display driver in Device Manager? Let us know the exact device make and model and the driver version date and number you are running. If there isn't a newer one, uninstall the current one in Device Manager and reboot the PC.

To check for the driver Win7 wants, enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3)
then Check For Windows Updates and install all Important and Optional Updates as there may also be performance patches needed for your display.

Otherwise check for the latest driver on the PC or Display device model's Support Downloads webpage.

It would be best if you choose to reinstall to boot the Win7 installation Media to Clean Install Windows 7. Let us know if this method works.
