Pavilion 23-b319 Powers up to Black screen, no beeps

Q: Pavilion 23-b319 Powers up to Black screen, no beeps

Can not boot Pavilion 23-b319. Powers up to a black screen with NO beep sounds. This started as an occasional non-boot symptom, but now will not boot at all.All other functions appear normal: power supply light remains on, power button lights up, fan is constant, hard drive spins, optical drive can open and disks sound as spinning. What I have tried: Power supply brick has been tested.Hard drive has been pulled (for data recovery) and is confirmed working.CMOS has been reset, battery replaced with new. When single 8GB RAM stick is removed, I get 5 beeps, a pause and patten is repeated. Can anyone familiar with this model confirm if these beeps are indicating ram failure or motherboard failure? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

I recommend downloading and running DRP. It's a recovery tool that has been proven to recover files that most other programs have no luck with. I've even recovered files from freshly formatted or partitioned drives.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/v51TwD. (This link will automatically start a download of DRP that you can save to your computer.)

@q59, welcome to the forum. The first component that comes to mind when I see these symptoms is the power supply unit (PSU). However, here is a guide that will help you troubleshoot the hardware to see if it is working properly. Some of the diagnostics are done from UEFI so the computer doesn't have to boot. Any ideas on a solution?

A:Dell Mini Inspiron 1018: Powers On - Blank Screen - No Beeps

Sounds like a display issue, such as a bad LCD or connector.
Try plugging it into a monitor to rule out the possibility of a bad video card.

I was playing a game on my PC while it was storming out and the power surged. Before I could unplug my pc the power came back on and my computer started back up. After starting back up it said installing update do not turn off the computer. I waited until it was done then it brought me to a black screen with a Windows logo and a circular loading bar. I waited somewhere between 5-10minutes before holding down the power button until it turned off. Upon turning the computer back on all the fans would work and everything it would show the blue screen that says to press esc then brings me to a black screen where it would have a _ mark in the top left and beep non stop. It isnt a long beep or anything its just multiple beeps non stop until I turn it off. I have tried taking out the ram and putting it back in but it just keeps beeping. I did a mem test and it showed that nothin was wrong with the ram.  The beeps are high pitched and very fast.

I recently tried to turn on my computer. It appears to power up, but there's nothing on the screen. I tried running the LCD test (power + D) and see the flashing colors so screen appears to be working.  Tried to run the POST (?) test (power + Fn) and can hear lots of beeping, but I cannot see anything on the screen. At one point early on, I must have pressed something to turn on the verbal assistance, because it was reading to me. That has stopped, though. Any suggestions for a fix?  I'm on a work trip overseas, so I'm not able to hook it up to an external monitor to see if that works.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

My son has a Lenovo G580 running Win 8.  He uninstalled McAfee AV which completed and indicated a reboot was required. He rebooted and Win 8 did not start.  Has a black screen.  Power lights come on and I can hear the fan running.  When powering up, there is a quick noise from the DVD drive being engaged, but then no other noise -- just the fan.

I was going to try to use a recovery disk, but he does not have one.  Can one be created using a Win 7 machine?

Help!!

Tom

A:Laptop powers up to a black screen

It's a good point about using the Windows 7 system repair disk for Windows 8. I do not know if that has been tried before or even if it is possible. Both use the BCD store for booting. But because this happened after Mcafee was uninstalled, I think it has affected more than just the boot files. I googled and found other people had the same problem of a blank screen after an uninstall.

Try the following first.

Remove the power cord and battery. Press the power button for 30 seconds. Attach the power cord but leave the battery out. Power up the computer.

Are there any files that need to be recoverd from the laptop?

Levono has a button that will start the factory reset process. It's called the NOVO button and looks like a little arrow. I am not sure where it is on your computer but if you do a factory reset, all files that were put on the computer after purchase will be deleted so do not do this until you have recovered all of your files.

trouble started today... fan was whining so checked it and rebooted, got some bad beeps(7 then 1 long 2 short i think), rebooted again and it booted fine but fan was barely turning so powered off and bought new fan, put it in... started booting, fan started, it was checking drives and then just powered off...

took the opportunity to get new case and power supply and put everything together again... same problem

disconnected all but the motherboard... same problem

would love to hear that this could be something other than a fried mobo...

A:no boot, black screen, powers itself off

Sounds to me that you have a short circuit that is grounding your MoBo (where it shouldn't be grounded)

make sure that you did not install any standoffs where they don't belong. remove your mobo from the case, verify that your standoffs are in the right spots for your mobo and form factor. the holes that your mobo should have mounting screws in will have a metal ring around them, if it doesn't, then dont use a mounting screw or metal standoff there (you can use a plastic standoff if you want)

before reinstalling the mobo, try "table testing" it first...boot up without mounting it in your case to verify that everything works before installing it

Alright... Now I seem to have another problem with my set up. It powers on, all the lights work, fans work... but nothing shows on screen and I don't hear any beeps. I've made sure the system speaker is connected correctly.

* CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M2A1600C9
I've disconnected everything else. I even tried both sticks of memory, one at a time.

A:New build - powers on, black screen

start with trouble shooting the "BIG FOUR"
MOBO
RAM
Graphic card
Proccessor

in this case i suggest reset the graphic card and make sure all connections are seated well after that if it dosent work you could fix it by swaping the Graphic card with a different one to determine if its a GC issue .

one question you see black screen ? do you even get to see the bois menu or nothing at all?

So my laptop powered on and I hear the fan and everything sounds normal, up until when the option to type in my password should appear. At first, there was no screen to type in my password. Now, there's the Windows logo, but the cursor doesn't move and there's no box to type in my password.

I tried a quick google and people suggested unplugging the adapter, taking out the battery, and pressing the ON button for 15-60 seconds. I did that and all it did was have the Windows logo pop up. I've tried booting it in safe mode, but nothing shows up.

So I tried step 3 from this page: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03518165&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en but pressing F10 didn't take me to the BIOS settings. The only option was to press enter, and it led me to options such as system restore or fixing the hardware.

Now this lets me see the screen perfectly fine, so what's going on? I can only see the screen here, but not on normal boot up or safe mode. I tried a system restore but that did not work. I'm currently in the VAIO Recovery Center and I ran a Quick Test and nothing was wrong. So I just did a "hard disk verify and repair" and it said it found something wrong but repaired it. I just restarted and still nothing, just a black screen with the Windows logo, no box to type in my password and the cursor can't move.

What operating system to you have? Windows 7? 8?

It sounds like the hardware is functioning, but something for Windows is corrupt. I had the exact same problem on a computer a couple of weeks ago.

I had a Windows on my flash drive, plugged it in, and choose to use startup repair to fix the problem. Ironically in my case, it said it failed, but it did fix the problem.

If you don't have a Windows disc, in your recovery settings, you should be able to choose startup repair. Sounds like upon booting the computer, you have to press enter. Not sure where to go from there on your computer. Can you provide all the options you see from that screen or see if you can find? Also, what is the make and model of your pc?

I have a HP Compaq 6820S that all of a sudden has stopped working   It had been on unattended for a few hours, and when I came back to it it had frozen with a black screen (I had to hold the power button to turn it off).  Now, when I power it up, the fan kicks in, the caps lock LED flashes on then off, the wireless and power button LEDs stay lit, and the DVD drive continously clicks - but nothing else (screen remains black /off, no beeps, no BIOS/ POST screen). I've tried with hard disk and/or memory removed, and with/without the battery inserted - with the same result as above each time.   EDIT: have also left the battery out for 24 hours too.  When on nothing happens (caps lock/num lock keys don't light up when pressed, wireless LED doesn't go off when pressed).  I've also tried exporting to an external display, again with no luck.  I suspect the motherboard is dead, and it may be new laptop time, but wanted to check here in advance in case anyone has any other suggestions.  Can anyone suggest anything?

Hello anyone who can help!

I have a Lenovo Laptop Thinkpad Edge E520 8GB RAM, Intel CPU B960 Pentium Processor 2.2GHZ

Recently when I have powered up my laptop it occasionally doesn't load properly, the screen stays black. You can hear the laptop working fine but you cannot see anything.

This happens once or twice a week, I usually hold on the power button for 5 seconds, then reboot and it resumes my hibernate settings as usual

Could this be because I always hibernate my laptop?

Can someone please explain what might be causing this problem and how I go about fixing it?

Thanks in advance!

A:Laptop powers on but screen stays black?

Thats a fairly new laptop as i have the edge 530.ive never put any of my computers on hibernate so im not sure if that why its doing that. it sounds like either a power supply problem, a screen problem, or a harddrive problem.or rarely the motherboard.you might want to take it somewhere and have it checked out then you will know for sure and go from there.if you have an external monitor you can try and see if anything shows up on it. if so or even if the other monitor is black i would still start with the screen first as the problem.

Hi there fellas.

I have had my comp for about 3-4 years. I have never had any problems but this week when I turned it on the screen remained black and said "no signal". Obviously there is no output from the graphics card and I have tried a second moniter which also failed. Im almost certain that this is a hardware problem.

When the PC boots up, the LED's on the flash card drives and floppy drive are permenently on. However, when the PC was working these lights would flash briefly and then go off while the boot sequence continued.

I have opened the case and turned the power on. The CPU fan and PSU fan are both spinning but the fan on the graphics card is not. The two DVD drives both work but there is still nothing on the screen.
Im not sure if the hard-drives have power because they are quite hidden.

Im am unsure of how to proceed. I thought I would seek some advice before physically taking it to a specialist.

If we restart or shutdown the computer may or may not boot. Has anyone had an issue similar to this and what did you do to correct the issue? We have tried replacing screens, mother boards, new hard drives, and swapping memory but cannot pinpoint what is causing the issue. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Its possible that the motherboard is failing or has failed.have it looked at so that you will know for sure the exact problem.from what i understand the xps laptops are for gaming and are known for having motherboard issues.as far as the stuck cd try to go to the cd/dvd drive itself and try to eject it or use a paperclip to try to pop open the drawer.

Hi everyone!

Whenever you power it on the indicator lights shine but however it seems the screen doesn't want to turn on. I've troubleshooted the computer by doing all I know. Such as removing the battery and draining the excess life in the computer, cleaning the RAM cartilages (also checked to see if it were by chance the RAM themselves), and as far as to dissembling the computer to see if the flex cables had by chance came unhooked. Everything seems to be hooked up and wired just fine. Just no screen display. The fan will turn on after several minutes of the computer idling.

Hope we can work things out!

Hello. My HP desktop recently stopped working. When I turned the PC on, the monitor would not turn on as it failed to receive a signal from the GPU. I soon replaced the old video card and PSU (Gigabyte GeForce GTX 750Ti and Cooler Master Elite 460W). The monitor turned on and displayed the blue HP screen with the text "Press the ESC key for Startup Menu". It stays on that screen until the computer produces 4 long beeps, and 3 quick, short beeps just after the last long beep. After that happens, the monitor displays the message " Monitor going to Sleep", and continues to do so, although the PC is still on and the fans are still running. Below are the procedures I've done to try to fix this problem.? Removed all dust, cleaned heatsink and fans? Replaced thermal paste on CPU cooler? Removed RAM sticks and placed back in? Installed new PSU and GPU? Made sure all wires were connected securelyI have had this desktop for almost 5 years now, and I've been keeping it clean. I would greatly appreciate if someone could help me with this issue. Also, thanks for reading, and sorry for the big wall of text.

A:Black screen and 3 beeps

I've fixed the issue..well it's a workaround that worked...
Right firstly, ignore the dumb response from Microsoft Engineer.

It's a logic problem and I have a workaround!!!!! I figured that an update or some function of Windows 10 had done something to the Bios as part of an update or driver reboot. No mater what you do it's stone cold dead. I remembered an old trick on HP servers to bring them back to life after a failed Bios update.
On another PC download the latest BIOS Update I think it was A10 (you will need this as soon as you get the brick working again
Now it is time to bring it back from the dead - You need to clear the CMOS data that HAS BEEN CORRUPTED by windows 10 update. It's not for the faint hearted though.
Strip the laptop, if you don't know how to do this ask a grown up or search You tube.
Remove the memory (optional, but I did this anyway), Laptop battery, power supply, HD and finally the CMOS backup battery.
Now in the old days we used to short out the battery terminals to clear any residual capacitor every; but now it looks like  you can just hold down power button for about 1 minute to discard any capacitors.
Resemble the laptop, don't button it up just yet as It look a few attempts to get this to stick.
Power it up!!!!, be patient as it takes a while for it to sort out the BIOS. after a few minutes you should see the Dell Bootloader (if you don't try power cycling a few times. If it starts with the 3 beeps then rep... Read more

First, our power supply died. We replaced it. Then the monitor was black with the appropriate beeps for the video card problem. We got a new video card. Now the screen was working I could get into the BIOS but the floppy disk was failing. Unplugged that and got it out of the system. Then it wouldn't recognize the hard drive. It kept wanting me to boot from the CD-ROM. It was telling me that there was no IDE Primary Master. The CD-ROM is the secondary master. I went to the CMOS Setup Utility and it was set for Auto to find and load the IDE. In the Primary Master menu it said the capacity was 0MB. This is a 20 MB harddrive. So I checked all the cables inside. Unplugged them and plugged them back in. Turned the machine on and now it comes on but there are no beeps, the screen is black and when I try to shut it off using the button on the front of the machine, it won't shut off. About two weeks ago I installed more memory on my PC and the PC worked just fine. Yesterday I was on the PC and it totally froze up (mouse didn't work, CTRL ALT DELETE didn't work) so I powered it off manually. When I powered it back up, I hear three short beeps from the PC and the monitor is completely black. The light on the monitor is green then after about three seconds it turns an amber color. I have checked all the cables and wires and everything is where it's supposed to be and firmly in position.

From what I have been reading on the internet, the three beeps indicates a RAM problem, but the amber color on the monitor indicates a video card problem. Does anyone have any thoughts on this???

Hello.

My mum was playing a game on her pc and suddenly the screen went black and the noise coming from the tower reduced.

I turned it on today and still black screen. The fans are turning but not sure if there is noise coming from the hdd. There is also no BIOS beep to confirm all is ok.

I have removed the RAM, and tried it, no beeping at all.

Also, not sure if this helps, but there is a wire in there, in a bundle of wires that is connected in to 'cd in' but the other end was lying loose unplugged. They have a small black box on either end with connector ports for 3 out of 4 small prongs. (1-1-empty-1).

I am guessing it may be the hdd or maybe the mother board? But Im no expert. Also removed the CPU fan and made sure was in right, seemed to be.

Please help, thanks in advance, Cammy...

PS I seem to rememebr the make of the unit is some obscure make EZZA or AZZA or something I think.

PPS One of the cd drives has a green light on, but will not open when the button is pressed.

I used a certain system cleaning application that made my laptop appear to "lose" a big chunk of RAM. It went from having 512mg to 200mg. Physically I know that isn't possible, but my computer thought it true. After a hours of use it began to drag and make the sound as if it was being over taxed. Eventually, it just shut itself off. When I powered it on, it gave me a choice of which way it should boot. I wasn't sure what to do, and chose F12, which may have been the multiple boot option. It just remained at that screen so, after waiting a long time of nothing happening, I just turned it off.
Now, when I turn it on, all I get is a black screen with no prompt or any words at all. It also doesn't make any beeping sounds, nor any other auditory implications. Just the soft whirling sound of the fan, motor, or whatever it is that let's you know it's running. I don't know if the RAM mishap has anything to do with it, but it happened around the same time.
The computer itself: 2.4g Intel P4 with Windows XP Pro
What can I do with only a black screen? Any thoughts or suggestions?

A:black screen, no prompt, no beeps

What can you do with a black screen - nothing really.

It sounds like the computer is failing to boot at all. The problem could be hardware by the sound of it, possibly unrelated to the other cleaning software issue?

Try booting from your Windows XP CD, but if the computer is not making POST into the BIOS, that will not work either.

Bet you are glad that all that data is backed up safely...

I have an HP G72 laptop. A few days ago I was thinking about installingubuntu. I booted from the LiveUSB. For some reason or another, I'm claiming temporary insanity, when the 'Try Ubuntu' screen came up, Ipressed the power button on the latop instead of going through the restart option. Now the laptop will not boot from the hard drive. It shows no BIOS or anything, just a black screen. The fan is running, the wifi light is lit, the number lock is lit but the screen is totally blank. I connected an external monitor and it doesn't show anything either. However, if I put the Ubuntu Live USB in, the system will boot from it and the external monitor will show Ubuntu.Any help or insight will be greatly appreciated.

A:Black screen, No BIOS, No beeps......

I resolved the issue.  Not sure how but I tore the system down to the base components and put them back together and it booted up just fine into Windows.

I have an HP Model: SR5333WM desk top. This morning upon start up the image went hay wire, then a black screen and a series of 1 short beep followed by 1 longer beep. I unplugged the system for another reboot, but upon turning the system on, I get the beeps and no output to the monitor. I hear the fans and the system is powered up, but nothing on the monitor.

I have a Dell XPS 8700 that has been shutting down suddenly. I cleared all the temporary files and cache and tried to reinstall Windows 7 Pro 64 bit OS but the re-install failed before it completed. An error window came up saying "The file directory X: is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility". I clicked on the "Okay" tab for this error window but the window would not go away no matter how many times I clicked on it.
Behind the error window it says on the bottom of the screen that it is re-installing my old operating system. However, it seemed like it was not able to reinstall the old OS as long as this error window stays on the screen. I waited 6 hours and it still would not re-install the old version (progress bars moving endlessly but never finishes install) then I finally forced a shutdown. When I started up the computer again the screen was completely black and a 5 beep error code beeps.
Now, I cannot even start my computer in safe mode or get any image at all on the screen when I power it up. The monitor says it is not getting any signal from the computer. I checked the monitor cable connections and they are secure.
According to the Dell beep codes 5 beeps means a bad CMOS battery. So I changed the CMOS battery, checked to make sure that ALL cable connections were secure, and unplugged the AC cord for a few minutes, checked to see that the video card, audio card and RAM were all inserted properly but I am still unable to get any image ... Hello,I had just received a T480 last week in the hopes that it would be my laptop for school, however after just two days of use the track point stopped working. While trying to fix the track point the touch pad also stopped working.  I had gotten the touchpad to work but the track point refused to work after booting from an Ubuntu drive. I was fine with using just the touchpad for school but now, after about 6 days of the touchpad working, it failed again for no good reason.  I had replaced the 8 gb of stock ram with 16 gb of ram I had laying around and the thinkpad worked fine until today. After today?s touchpad failure I tried rebooting 5 times, removing and reinstalling drivers, booting from a Linux usb, and using the original ram.  After trying to boot from the original 8 gb of ram, I was greeted with 8 very loud beeps and a black screen. I am typing this on my phone because the thinkpad will not post, let alone boot. I have orientation on Monday and Tuesday and school starts on Thursday so unless Lenovo can send a replacement or do a repair in two days I?m pretty much screwed.

Yes 8 beeps indicate LCD failure.
BUT, if I remove and replace the battery it most often cures the problem. But, it also happens even if the lid is not closed at power down. So what is "causing" the problem?
My only thought is closing and opening the lid is "curing" the problem, not the R&R of the battery.
Anybody else have a clue?
Thanks, Fred

A:Inspirion 5748, 8 beeps, black screen

More specifically, eight beeps means the display isn't being detected.  If it's display position sensitive, I'd suspect a damaged LCD wiring harness - that's the first place to check.

I have a video showing what happens if there is a way to post it.

A:Power on, no post, no beeps, black screen...

If you had a thunderstorm and lightning, it could be more than one component, but the likely suspects are power supply and motherboard.

Here is a way to troubleshoot from member TVeblen:

Strip it down and then add components back, one at a time, to try and isolate the offending component.

The test (power off, power cord unplugged):
• Disconnect everything externally connected except the mouse and keyboard (printers, USB devices). If you are not using a wired mouse and keyboard see if you can borrow one.
• Disconnect the power and data cables from all the drives inside the computer (Hard drives, DVD/CD drives).
• Remove all the cards installed in the PCI slots including the video card. (be careful handling them and place them on a non conductive surface while testing).
• Remove all the RAM sticks (same rules as above).
Now connect the power cord and turn the PC on.
• The motherboard should start beeping. You should get a beep code that tells you there is no memory. This is good, it means the processor is functioning and the motherboard is good so far.
• Now add one stick of memory in Slot A1 and power on. More beeping: "no video card" beep code. This is good.
• Then add the video card and connect it to the monitor. You should get no beeping and you should see the BIOS screens, ending with the message that there is no boot device.
If you get no video then switch the one memory stick installed for another one and test.

About a couple weeks ago, started getting these musical beeps on startup. Wasn't like anything I've ever heard before, like an 8-bit video game tone when you lose. These beeps would happen before the Lenovo logo shows. Recently turned into musical beeps with black screen, especially after waking from sleep. Pressing F7 (sometimes w/ ctrl or fn key) also resulted in the same six musical beeps. So I reinstalled Windows and updated the drivers, problem remained but severity diminished temporarily. Back to happening often. I think things started after I did some updates through the Lenovo Vantage app, including BIOS 1.31. any help or guidance is appreciated
