I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

avast! is good compared to the others, and Bitdefender plus Malwarebytes just don't offer anything. Even thought, let's keep in mind that Malwarebytes is still just an Antimalware and not an Antivirus. Still nice to see it mentionned in an article like this to show that it doesn't put itself on the same level as the other security software.

Hi, another question for zemana AM portable.

I had zemana portable for another PC I hadn't used for months. Today, it had a problem, I teamviewer-ed it, executed zemana AM portable and it performed an autoupdate. After the update, I saw the 14-day trial was expired, I ignored it and tried to do a smart scan. However, I couldn't do a smart scan and ZAM asked me to buy the product. There was nothing I could do other than entering my giveaway license to make it work

The question is: Is ZAM (portable) still free anymore?

A:Is Zemana AM portable not free anymore?

AVG asked for computer reboot so I said yes and now when my computer boots the desktop opens but then nothing happens the start menu and that whole bar at the bottom of the screen won't load and clicking or opposite clicking on any desktop icons just freezes the mouse.
Also Windows Task Manager won't open.
Please some one help.
Also I get a program terminated error about not reading memory, right at the windows welcome screen to which I tried pressing canel and Ok, neither worked.

P.S. by booting into safe mod and disabling most things in the "msconfig" I was able to get windows tool bar to load, but clicking on anything in the tool bar once again freezes the mouse, and I can't get Task manager to open.

I recently wrote a review of a just-being-released addition to the ThinkPad line, the 14? T490s.  My writeup was based on the one system I had in front of me and, as always with pre-released systems, documentation was sparse at best.  The computer had very early drivers and system software but was remarkably stable and reliable.  New system software started to appear, and I noticed a new BIOS image, that was described as the initial release, but was substantially newer than what was on my computer.  I always try to apply updates as early as possible on any machines I review, hoping to identify any unexpected issues before the general market.  During the BIOS update, a message I had never seen flashed by.  As a result of nothing more than blind luck, my camera happened to be within reach and the battery was charged.  I apologize for the quality of the photo, but there was no time for staging.

New message

Based on what I can ascertain, the process is intended to be completely invisible to the user, other than the message I noticed.  After a BIOS update, the BIOS restarts and, after initialization, the image is backed up before booting into Windows or another operating system.   On subsequent startups, if there is a problem starting, the backed-up BIOS image is restored automatically.  In some ways, this is similar to the way Microsoft handles drivers in Windows.

Hi,

I have AVG internet security installed on my computer. It runs really well (despite it slowing my computer slightly )

However when I run a scan, reaching the end, it automatically begins "healing" any threats it may have come across. This is all well and good but when it gets right to the end of this process it seems to get stuck almost like it crashes. My cursor turns into the sand timer and "(NOT RESPONDING)" appears in the top of the window?!

It's not a massive problem but I thought I'd post the query in case there's either something I'm doing wrong or in case anyone else has encountered this problem before.

Welcome to TSG.

Do this:
go to http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/ , and download 'Hijack This!'.....
Unzip it to its own folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

If you have anything disabled by MSConfig or any other startup manager, please re-enable it before scanning to post.

I'm helping a neighbor clean up and maintain her computer (nearly a case of the blind leading the blind). She had AVG, Nod32 and Nod32Fix installed, though Nod32 and Nod32Fix weren't functioning. I uninstalled Nod 32 but couldn't get rid of Nod32Fix. I ran a full scan with AVG, which told me 24 Trojans had been found.
I asked an acquaintance who owns a computer repair place if it mattered that Nod32Fix was still there, and what he thinks of AVG. He told me that a lot of the free antivirus software downloads with viruses (some of which prevent you from installing any other kind of antivirus software), and that AVG is notorius for this and for letting viruses through. He said that the only solution is to have all viruses removed by someone who knows what they are doing (i.e. him) and install a better security program. He also said that even if I was able to uninstall Nod32 and AVG and install some other free program (like the one that comes with ComCast or AT&T) it may not be functioning properly, even if it appears to be....
So is he correct? Or is he just trying to drum up business?
I appreciate the help!

I have had this issue for many months, now. I loaded Vista x64 Home Premium to run in a dual-boot configuration with my XP Pro. I do critical work so I didn't trust going to Vista exclusively. I mainly wanted it to see if I could utilize all my RAM and speed up Photoshop processing.
I have had it working three or four times, (except for tablet functionality) then when I must re-boot because of SP1 and other security updates or in one case, I installed Office 2007, it does nothing on restart; black screens and just sits there, totally unresponsive. No blinking of the LED which shows drive activity. When re-booting, F8 isn't working (nothing happens). Regarding the previous instances, I gave up trying to get it to respond and went back to booting into XP, which always works fine. Then after a period (usually a month or more) I will try booting into Vista, on restart, and viola, it works again!

I spent the night at my sister's the other day. She was agitated while using her laptop. Typical complaints, it is slow to respond, some programs won't open at all, and pop ups. I ran a few of the scans that I've used in the past and it's more responsive, there aren't any more popups flashing, but it still lags. I am hoping some wise soul on here can take it to the next level.

Thanks in advance!

Somehow my computer contracted a Win32.HEUR virus off of an accidental spam site visit, and now my computer is full of infections.

At first I tried using AVG, but the virus basically overpowered it and tried to uninstall it.. So I got Kaspersky's virus removal tool. It seems to have taken care of the heur for the most part, but now I have a rootkit.tdss that just won't go away.

The problem is, I can't kill any processes, it's locked my taskbar out, I can hardly open any programs, it just says "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is alread yinstalled, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." I can run programs if I select "run as administrator" but thats the only way they will work right now..

There are other symptoms as well, the whole pc is a complete mess right now, I've been working on it all day and night trying to get the infections cleared out. I just ran Hijackthis and I have a log I can post if necessary.

Is there anything else that I can do get this thing off of my computer??

-EDIT

I forgot to mention that when running malwarebytes or kasperskys virus removal, before I can complete the scan, the computer forces a shutdown.

I'm currently disturbed by this popup every time i open my computer. Whatever user I log-in the same popup appears. The title of the popup is "C:\WINDOWS\system32\keyboard\services.exe" Below that, a message says that Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\keyboard\services.exe'.This started when I transferred video clips from an mp4(ipod). Of coarse, I scanned it first using my updated AVG free edition and found no threat. After that i downloaded a free realplayer11 from cnet (here's the url: http://download.cnet.com/RealPlayer/3000-1...-10073040.html). It was saved to my desktop so as the video clips that I transferred. Then I tried to install realplayer but upon running the downloaded installer, it warned me that the computer will be restarted after the installation. So, I decided to cancel it first and remove first the mp4(ipod) and the flash drive of my cousin (which was already there when I used the computer). I failed in safely removing the mp4(ipod) but succeeded in removing the flash drive. I then, decided to forcefully remove the mp4(ipod) and started a computer scan. As expected, I found 1 trojan and successfully healed it. AVG asked for a restart and I clicked 'yes'. From that time, this annoying popup shows. The incident happened while I'm using the Administrator Account.I'm using Windows XP Professional SP2Please help me with this problem....

A:Popup After Healing Infected File

Hi and welcome..Its not unusual to receive such an error after using specialized fix tools.A "Cannot find...", "Could not run...", "Error loading... or "specific module could not be found" message is usually related to malware that was set to run at startup but has been deleted. Windows is trying to load this file but cannot locate it since the file was mostly likely removed during an anti-virus or anti-malware scan. However, an associated orphaned registry entry remains and is telling Windows to load the file when you boot up. Since the file no longer exists, Windows will display an error message. You need to remove this registry entry so Windows stops searching for the file when it loads. To resolve this, download Autoruns, search for the related entry and then delete it.Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click here if you're not sure how to do this.)Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries. When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message.Right-click on the entry and choose delete.Reboot your computer and see if the startup error returns.Next run MBAM:Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.34) and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via ... Today I was looking for a game demo of Dragon Age 3, and installed one I found on TheDemoBay. But it seemed very fishy to me, as it was supposed to be only 2.5GB and the exe itself was about 660kb big (while the regular game is around 35GB). And of course, after it finished "installing" - I'm not sure if it even installed anything as there were no folders in the destination - I found no traces of it, it wanted me to go online and download a txt file from the site and input the code from it into the app, after you filled out one of those scam surveys, which I didn't.

Now, I deleted the exe, but I didn't find any traces of the program, and when all items modified today via TreeSize, I couldn't find them. So I ran Malwarebytes Free and AVG Free while the laptop was offline, but they found nothing.

What else can I run to make sure nothing happened, and it didn't change the DNS servers, or install some kind of spyware, virus or something else? Hopefully it was just a scam that tried to take a survey and didn't actually change anything. Thank you!

A:How to make sure my PC is completely free of dns changers/viruses etc?

With regards to DNS servers - run a scan with the software mentioned in this post:

A problem with Firefox on a used/rebuilt Dell Inspiron laptop

Make a note of your current DNS server settings (write down the numbers) and when the scan is running you will get asked at some point "did you install this server?" and if the addresses shown match your current settings choose yes. Otherwise choose no.

EDIT: You will get asked about any existing DNS servers if there are more than one detected.

When the scan completes view the report and upload anything of concern. As for repair - I'd suggest avoiding that option for the time being or only select individual items for removal if you are 100% sure that they need removing.

We?ve covered how to use the old school CHKDSK command check on disk in Windows 7 yesterday but what we didn?t touch is actually even better. It?s a nice new feature that I didn?t realize its existed either until very recently.

Basically, once the feature is turned on, Window will detect a physical file system error and automatically fix it on the fly without you even noticing it happened. Because of this, you actually have a lot less chances having to run CHKDSK to check the disk manually because most likely the errors you suspected may have been fixed by this self-healing process already.

NTFS Self-healing is turned on by default in Windows 7 but if you are not sure you can use the following command to make sure. Note that the command has to be run as Administrator.

Ok, So I was lectured today by a Senior IT Tech about how the Free version of Malwarebytes is a backdoor for other viruses. He told me that the free version, if left installed on someones computer, can actually allow viruses to come back in.
He also said the same thing about AVG FREE.
I think this is absurd. I agree that a lot of free software can include viruses in the installation package but I don't think that Malwarebytes OR AVG create back doors and basically open up tunnel for a traffic of only viruses to come in and out of. It sounds honestly ridiculous.
and this assumption is coming from somebody who uses CUTEPDF Writer on his clients machines.

A:Free version of Malware bytes a backdoor to other viruses?

Hi jerrymck I don't know who that Senior IT Tech is, but he should think about retiring as soon as he can because he obviously got it all wrong. Malwarebytes is a worldwide known Antimalware program, and one of the best, if not the best there is. There's no way that installing it would at the same time install a backdoor to allow malware to infect your system. Also, why would the free version does that, but not the paid one? It doesn't make sense at all. Same for AVG.

Hi everyone, first time over here!

I've got a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, with Windows XP and two days ago it got overrun with viruses and god knows what. It was the popups which alerted me - my McAfee Security Centre didn't pick anything up on their scan, so I bought PC Tools Spyware Doctor, which did pick up viruses. I still had problems though so used the website hackerwatch.org's port scan to see where my comp weaknesses are - but it didn't detect any. Another Spyware Doctor scan picked up more viruses though. I also got the google toolbar to try and stop the popups but that had no effect.

So I got Ad-Aware 2007 and Windows Defender. My comp crashed while they were scanning, but when I rebooted my comp they both said my comp was clean.

It was running so slow I got rid of one of the security centres (the Spyware Doctor one).

Now the popups have stopped, but my comp is still really slow - when I type it keeps missing what I type; it can tell I've pressed a key 'cause it will leave a space, but it won't put the actual letter there, and it keeps missing the delete and space buttons. It takes ages to switch from window to window as well, and load up the pages initially.

Can anybody tell me if my comp is actually free of viruses etc now? And is my comp screwed from them or can I get it working the way it used to?

I'll post my hijackthis log below - really hope someone can help! Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Can someone advise me of the best strategy of staying free of viruses/spamware/slowing machines down?

One conclusion I've come to: if it's Windows, then it will slowly come to a grinding slow sooner or later

So, best strategy is to have a clean install that you will recover REGULARLY?

Any comments on the above would be great

But generally, I thought of having all my data on a separate drive
AND making sure NO DATA AT ALL that I need is stored on the same drive as the OS drive with programs

The plan would be to regularly restore the clean install

A small problem I can see: updates
I can reinstall a backup from 6 months ago - but then maybe missing a few 100MB of updates easily!

Any comments or advice on the above would be great

Thanks

I thought it would be a good idea in keeping with the overall goal of this site to start a thread to give people a list of legal and secure sites for downloading free or dirt-cheap movies, music and software/games.
I believe this would helpful in terms of not just telling people not to visit/support pirating websites,
but to also give them other alternatives so that there wouldn't be a temptation to go there anyway

A:Good source sites for secure & legal free movies and free/free to try software?

That is a good question.
When I think about it Hulu does have movies.
I use Netflix.
I can use http://www.epixhd.com/ as I have Dishnetwork and can use that to be able to watch. Yup, just tested works good.
Many of the Movies channels can be watched that way.
