Screen keeps turning off after some time..

Q: Screen keeps turning off after some time..

Hello, i checked power settings, screen (as well as the rest) is set to NEVER TURN OFF. Yet it does! After 20' or so. What can i do to fix it?

Preferred Solution: Screen keeps turning off after some time..

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Screen keeps turning off after some time..

Set Screen saver to (None).
Set "turn off the display" to Never.
Set "Turn off hard disk after" to Never.

Here is the issue, when my computer goes to sleep after it's on for a while when I move the mouse to get the screen back up it shows the backround no icons or anything to click.
Same if I turn it off and turn it back on. I have to turn it off and on many times then go to safe mode and shut down then turn it on again for it to work. Just now I had to turn it on/off 4 times for it to show the icons and task bar. Usually it is left blank with nothing to click having no choice but to turn it off.
Norton says no viruses.
My computer is HP with windows 7. I bought it in 2011.
This problem has been happening for a long time. Please help.

Hello squirrels and welcome to Seven Forums.

I think I'd start out by trying to do a startup repair. It's been suggested that the startup repair be done 3 times (regardless of what the notifications say) and the computer rebooted after each repair.

If this doesn't fix the problem one of the Forum experts has prepared these troubleshooting guides with some additional suggestions.

Hello to all,

I have bought new HP laptop ProBook series. Before connecting, I was informed to "form" the battery first so it can last longer. I'm not sure what that means. Battery is included in the package but was not connected to the laptop. What should I do first? Should I connect battery and turn on laptop, or should I first connect it to the adapter for charging?

In the instruction nothing is said about the correct procedure. There are few steps such as connecting the battery to the laptop, then connecting the external power (adapter) and then turn on computer.

Should there be some time after connecting the external power and before turning on?

My computer says that I am connected to the internet..but I can't access the net, or anything that needs a connection?

Does anyone have a idea of what's going on?

Hi Srikar
Thanks for writing to us.
Have you made any hardware or software changes lately?
Please run diagnostics from f12 menu and let us know the outcome.
You can also try to release the static charge by disconnecting the adapter and battery and hold down the power button for 15 sec and then put the connections back. Observe for any changes.
Have you tried any troubleshooting? (like removing the memory modules, hard drive etc)

My computer continuously turns off whenever anything graphically intensive happens.
This started about a year or two ago intermittently, gradually getting worse over time, and now it's gotten so bad that I can't even watch videos or browse pictures or play any game at all for more than 20 seconds.
Originally it only happened when having multiple instances of World of Warcraft open, so to avoid the problem I just stuck to one instance of it, and everything seemed fine, I could play any other game on ultra settings and there would be no problems at all, just when I had two windows of WoW open.
Recently the problem has gotten very bad after switching to a new HDD. It seems that whenever I change hardware in my computer to diagnose the problem, it appears to get much much worse, in the past, I thought maybe my PSU was going bad, so I bought a replacement and the problem seemed to get even worse with the brand new PSU until I switched back to my old one.
There are no bluescreens or errors popping up before my computer turns off, it's just like someone flipped the off switch or pulled the plug on it.
I have a fresh install of Windows that I did about four days ago on my new HDD (When the problem started getting bad)
I disabled my GPU (GTX 760) and tried watching a few videos with onboard graphics, and the problem doesn't go away.
I stress tested my CPU and it didn't seem to cause any issues
I tested all of my ram five times with no errors.
I've cleaned all the dust from everyth... Read more

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if you could help me with a problem I am having with my computer.

The problem I am having is that whenever I log onto my computer, I can see that the date and time at the bottom right of the screen always seems to reset to 31/12/2006. I always try to fix this by going to the option where you can synchronise the date and time with the Windows server time, however, this doesn't always seem to work.

Another problem I am encountering is that the computer itself seems to be cutting out at different times, for example I could be 98% complete into a full system scan with Kaspersky 2012, but the computer suddenly cuts out, this would also be the case when browsing the internet or completing some Word documents.

One other thing to mention as well is that since these problems have occurred, whenever I turn on my computer, I never have to press the power button on, as it seems to turn itself on whenever I switch the power supply on. This is also not normal.

If anyone can direct me to the solution to the problem, then this would be much appreciated.

A:Logging/Turning off takes long time

You can do the fast shutdown by using Clt-Alt-Dtl, then keep holding the control key and click shutdown. It should shutdown much faster. The only problem is you data will not be saved, so be sure to close your open programs in an orderly fashion before trying it.

Hi guys, Iím 99% sure that my computer is infected with some sort of Virus. I've always had my suspicions but today when i turned on my computer i found that I had 4 important messages in the action centre. I am being told that Windows defender and McAfee Internet Security suite have been turned off (McAfee came free with my computer for 60 days). So when i clicked on solve problem nothing seemed to happen, so i opened the McAfee user interface and try and turn on the Real-time scanner. It turned on for literally 1 second before turning off again! Is a Virus doing this? McAfee pops up every 10 minutes telling me that my computer is at risk, but i just can't turn on the scanner! McAfee also tells me that 3 Viruses have been removed but i highly doubt that. McAfee is just rubbish! So can someone please look at my Hijack this log and tell me how to remove this annoying virus? Thank you in advance.

i'm running Win 7 Home Premium Service pack 1 64bit on a laptop. For a while now i have problem with my Mcafee LiveSafe real-time scanning and firewall randomly turning off. Even when i turn them on again they usually turn off afterwards. I already twice restored my computer to factory defaults which i read should get rid of persistent viruses. Still the problem persists. Besides that my computer frequently freezes then shows black screen and only manual shutdown turns it off. That usually happens when i'm browsing internet (using Firefox). I'm worried my PC is infected and i have some sensitive information on it so i would appreciate any help!

We received 2 brand new E7240s directly from Dell, one for myself and one for my colleague. As soon as I turned it on to build it for my colleague, I noticed the machine was overheating and the fan was making a noise. Dell suggested a BIOS upgrade which didn't change anything. They then changed the heatsink, again this changed nothing and since then they changed the motherboard. My colleague has gone on holiday so I don't know if her issue has been resolved, however, my laptop from day one does not overheat (as obviously as it did for my colleague) BUT THE FAN TURNS ALL THE TIME. So much so that I think the person in the upstairs bedroom is using her hairdryer. Dell replaced the heatsink and the motherboard yesterday, I have done the same BIOS upgrade and the problem is even worse. As soon as I switch the thing on, the ventilator turns all the time making a loud noise. My previous model was the E6500 and I wasn't bothered by any noises it made.
The 7240 makes so much noise that I want to throw it out of the window  , seriously I am going to switch back to my 5 year old e6500 which is now very slow, I just can't take the constant hair dryer noise from the fan! I am waiting for Dell to get back to me but I don't see what else they can do.
I suspect there is a design problem with newer models, someone with a Latitude 13 Notebook has also mentioned it on the forums, also someone else with an e7240 states "I have noticed the fan running much... Read more

I just purchased a new Dell Latitude E7240 laptop with Windows 7, and had the same problem with overheating and the fan running noisily all the time. I've just fixed it on my laptop, it may not work for everyone but just in case I'm entering it here.
The clue for me was that the issue only happened at home, not at work.

Using the Task Manager, I found that a process 'svchost.exe' was always running at 25% CPU, i.e. taking 100% of one of the 4 processor cores. For this you need to view everyone's processes, and hence you need a local admin account if it asks for permission.
With right-click on that process => 'Go to services', you can study which services are hosted by that instance of svchost.
For each of those few services, try stopping one at a time (if it lets you) and see if the CPU usage goes down. For me a clue was one service got stuck on 'Stopping' but never stopped.
The misbehaving service for me was the 'HomeGroup Provider'. That was why the issue only happened at home and not at work. The laptop had spotted my HomeGroup on my home network, but had not been able to join it. Possibly some issue with IPv6 that I could not enable on my desktop.
In the Services tab in Task Manager, get properties on the that service, and set Startup Type to Disabled.
Restart the laptop, to ensure the service is stopped.

This did the trick for me, and now the CPU stays below 5% when idle. This is not solving the issue that the fan is noisy... Read more

Hi everyone,

From last few weeks I'm having this strange and annoying blank screen of death. I could just see a blank screen (not a blue screen) while either waking up computer from sleep or while trying to turn on the display by moving cursor/typing something(waking up from power saver mode of display, I set display to be of after few minutes of inactivity). So essentially screen becomes total blank. Just once or twice I saw this BSOD "DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE" but for all other times my screen is just blank. I could see the Hard Disk activity LED on during this blank screen. And almost after all subsequent boots, I could see "Windows has recovered from unexpected shutdown/serious error - Check for solution" message.

Thought the problem was solved.Today, same issues. When I attempt a System Restore, I cannot select a date prior to today.Thank you very much for your assistance.EDIT: Moved from XP to Am Infected forum, more appropriate ~ Hamluis.Have you run a scan for viruses using Malwarebytes?

Dear all, Happy new year and all

I wonder if you could help...

My husbands laptop this evening will not turn on AT ALL. It was working perfectly well a few days ago:

When the power button is turned on all that happens is the power light turns green. There is no sound coming from the hard drive (the hard drive light doesn't even show). In addition, there doesn't seem to be a fan working. And finally, there is a light strange noise (not a hard drive noise).

I am wondering whether it is a motherboard issue????
Woud creating a recovery bios boot CD help? Would like wipe the hard drive?

The major problem is that the laptop is used for all our business transactions and GASP.... we haven't backed it up, so we could potentially lose very important data
Many thanks and I do hope somebody is out there to help us.

Much geekness

So I am having trouble with this toogle key thing. I turned in on by mistake a few weeks ago (great mistake). Probelm is from then onwards, when ever I turn it off it activates again after I restart my computer.
I looked online and read that I have to change the "sign- in settings'' so that It doesn't turn on my toogle keys whenever I restart my laptop. I did thta hoping it would fix the issue, however it is still happening.
After I reset everything (ease of access + sing in settings) and restart my laptop it turns everything on again. It even resets my sing in settings so that y tootgle keys turn on afater restart (even though I change it everytime).
I am now out of solutions and HATE THE ANNOYING TOOGLE KEY SOUND. I really just want help disabling it for good. can anyone help?

Hello everyone! Iv'e been having an issue that's driving me crazy and i'm hoping someone here can help.

The issue i'm having is when my computer goes into sleep/hibernate mode and i wake it up, the screen appears to have a resolution issue ( picture attached ). I figured this wasn't a big deal so i turned sleep/hibernate mode off and just turn my screen off when not in use. I'm getting the exact issue though! When i turn my screen off and back on, the resolution is messed up.
So now i need help resolving this. If it also fixes it for the sleep/hibernate mode, that would be great but not necessary
The ONLY recent change is I upgraded to an Asus GTX560 Ti DirectCU II Top OC graphics card. I installed the card into my computer and windows automatically downloaded the drivers for it.

Things i've tried:
1)Uninstalled and reinstalled graphics drivers using windows update and then again through Nvidia website
2) Currently using HDMI, but get the same issue with DVI-D (single) cord
3) Completely reinstalled Windows 10 Pro from scratch
4) Double checked all connections
5) Look through settings on my TV and settings on the graphics card through Nvidia Experience
6) Googled similar issues, but im not finding many that have the SAME issue as me
My setup:
CPU: Core 2 Duo E8500
Mobo: Dell OTP412 X38
GPU: Asus GTX560 Ti DirectCU II Top OC (1gb DDR5)
PSU: Corsair CX650

A:Screen/Resolution Issues When Turning Screen On/Off

You appear to have a very old Dell (OptiPlex?) model desktop.
What is its model name and model number?
What is the exact "service tag" and "express service code" numbers on it?

Is it running Windows 10 Pro 32-bit or 64-bit?
You should download and save the appropriate driver from the NVIDIA site, then select the custom install option, then select the clean install option.

Are you having the same issues when using a standard computer monitor instead of using a HD TV?

I have Windows XP running on a machine in a store that i look after.
Last night we had an electrical issue and tested an appliance and it involved turning on and off the mains multiple times.
The computer is set to automatically turn on. Ideally we should have taken the pc off the mains.
This morning when we turned on the power we noticed it consistently kept reloading.
What happens:
System boots up
Ask what mode i want to run in
Then goes to XP splash screen followed by brief blue screen
Then return to Boot
I've tried selecting the other modes and none work.
Click here to see a video of the issue
From research it sounds like it could be hard drive issue but then i came across RAM issue? So no idea what to do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:XP boots to XP Splash screen then reloads time and time again

Hello, and Welcome to BC
Tap F8 at boot and select "Disable AutoRestart on System Failure. What stop code does the blue screen show. It should also list a file causing the problem?

Yesterday I was in a hurry and it was taking a long time to shut the laptop down. So I went for a force shut down. But now when I am turning on the laptop, nothing is happening. The screen is black, nothing is coming up. I thought it's a screen problem, but the buttons are also not working. I tried the Caps lock button, Mute button, Airplane mode button, but nothing is happening. The screen is black. And nothing is coming. I waited for 10-15 mins but nothing is happening. Restarted the device quite a number of times, removed the battery and then tried to turn it on. But at the end, the problem is still there. I need it today at 3 in the afternoon. If someone can help, it will be very kind.

My monitor turns off every now and again, I've changed the monitor to test if it was that which was causing the problem but it still happens. I've also changed the wire, checked the power supply (seems fine from what I can tell) and replaced the hard drive. I could be playing a game or doing nothing on it at all and it would happen.

Don't think it's the graphics card as when it does work the images are fine.

One thing I noticed when it does turn off is that my external hard drive turns off too but the computer remains on,also once when I was playing music when the screen went off the music stopped too. Makes me think its a hardware problem but not sure which.

I had to do a clean wipe on a virus/malware infected HP All In One Touchsmart 310-1000z (2010 model). I have turned off hibernate, sleep, hybrid sleep, and hard drive sleep. Screen is set to dim at 3 minutes and screen saver at 10 minutes. But for some reason, the screen will just go blank randomly, it seems like maybe 45-60 minutes after being turned on.

Clicking the mouse does not bring the screen back, nor typing on keyboard, nor touching the screen. Have to press the power button and shut it off that way. The hard drive light does not flicker, leading me to believe it may still be going into a sleep mode I can't find?

I have no idea what I did wrong.

Took apart my laptop (see signature/system specs) to get the part number off the fan and put the computer back together as normal. Turned it on and voila, no display. Don't know why. Rechecked the connection of the display cable a few times, and still no display. I'm wondering if maybe I damaged the cable or the system board. The computer turns on though, just no display!
Took apart the lid to check the screen. Firstly, HP's construction continues to amaze me. These things are built like tanks for sure! Secondly, there's no visible damage to the screen or any components inside of the lid. Going to put it back together and test the screen one more time, and if that doesn't work, I'll test with an external monitor to see how things work out...

I know, vague, but I'm kinda stuck/lost here.

A:Screen not turning on

Hello kbronski,

Keep in mind that all the LCD wire connectors are extremely fragile. Do not apply too much force while reconnecting the cables. Secure the connector with the clear tape.

If the external monitor doesn't work, try power cycling:

shut down
unplug battery and charger
hold power button for 5 to 10 seconds to drain all residual power
plug battery and charger back in

If the external monitor does work, hold down the FN key while you tap the F-key with a picture of a monitor. Perhaps, it got turned off.

Hi guys!I have a Toshiba Encore tablet with windows 8.1 on it. After an update yesterday, the screen doesn't turn off when it gets in sleep mode.It turn black, but it still has the background light on.The same update messed up the screen luminosity. It is set to maximum by default, and no matter how much I change it, nothing happens. The battery drains very fast with the screen on this way and I really don't know how to solve it.I tried system restore, but it didn't have any images saved, so I need a solution apart from that. Many thanks!

A:Screen not turning off

You could try rolling back the updates until you uninstall the "bad" one. Process of elimination is all I know if you cannot restore point your way out or apply a backup image.

Hello,I'm not sure if this is the right place to post but hopefully I can get some help or be forwarded to a place a I can.So a few years ago my parents purchased a C40-05 all-in-one desktop. From the start there were problems. It would hang at the Lenovo screen, continuously have to enter Windows Repair and would not shut down correctly. After updating via the latest updates from both Windows and Lenovo, the desktop's display seems to be not working. When I power on the screen just stays blank as if no power is going to it. However, if I put in a CD i can hear it spin and also I can see the power buttons on both the mouse and keyboard light up. I can't even access the bios as there is no display what so ever.  Any of you experienced this or know how I can fix it? At this point it's not really worth taking to a shop but if I could access the bios at least that would be a start. ThanksChris

Don't panic, you are in the right place. You did nothing wrong. (Btw, Welcome to SevenForums )

We will start by the beginning.
1. What are your system specs? Are those the specs of the laptop?
2. Is the blue screen always happening when doing the same task or is it random?
3. Since when does this problem happens?
4. Please, post the minidump here. Some people here knows how to read it here and can help to pinpoint the problem you have.

Also, gives us all information you have no matter how small. It can help.

For the past month my PC has been rebooting itself at random with no BSOD or crash report. I sent it in to get fixed where they gave it a system restore and taking out all the components before putting them back in, before leaving it on for several days with no issues. However it then restarted within minutes of me bringing it back home.
I've tried replacing the power block with a new one with surge protection, using different sockets or rooms in the house, switching the screen and power cables. I also ran windows memory diagnostic, Norton 360 and system checker. But nothing has worked, infact it seems to have gotten worse with the screen now turning off but the pc keeps running until I turn it off myself.
I ran the event viewer (see attachment) but I'm pretty much computer illiterate so I can't really make sense of it. Can anyone help me?

Hi all,
Having a little problem here. I have a 7 year old Compaq Presario Desktop. 3 times now (Thurs night, Fri night, Sat morning) while it's being used the screen goes black, and the fans shut off inside the tower. But the green power light stays on. I turned off the PC last night to let it cool down but this AM the same thing happened again.

Is this problem due to the computer over heating? I just cleaned the whole thing up 2 months ago for the first time in a long time, but maybe something got in there causing the fan not to spin correctly.
