CHAINTECH VNF4/Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard

Q: CHAINTECH VNF4/Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard

Hi guys, back after a few months away from this great site/forum.

I have a question regarding the CHAINTECH VNF4/Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard I was searching all over the web but can't seem to find out if this motherboard will support the new AMD 64 X2(dual core) 939 CPU? It says it supports the AMD 64 & 64 FX CPUs, but what about AMD 64 X2(dual core) 939 CPU?

If anyone here can help me out, I'd be grateful. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: CHAINTECH VNF4/Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Most nForce4 based motherboards support such CPUs but not all of them do so out-of-the-box. Make sure to have a motherboard from the latest production batch. If not, it might be handy to have a single-core to flash the BIOS in case it doesn't want to power up with the dual-core one.

Hey all,

I did a google search and the best answer I found was one person saying it would work together but didn't say his setup was like that.

My question is will a ChainTech VNF4 Ultra (socket 939) motherboard accept Kingston ValueRAM (KVR400X64C3A/512)?

Do any of you actually have this setup with no problem? Thanks in advance.

Hello all,

I've come back to the forums in hopes you good people can help me out as you have numerous times before in my previous threads.

I just upgraded my Bro's PC, installed the "Chaintech VNF4 Ultra VE Mobo," I installed an AMD 64 X2 4400+ CPU. I went to Chaintechs website to check for latest drivers/updates for the Mobo. They have a new BIOS update (date: 6/03/2005)that allows the Mobo to support AMD 64 X2 (Dual Core) CPU's. I installed Win XP Pro w/SP2, everything seems to be running fine. I am not sure if my CPU is being supported & recognized as a Dual Core Chip, so I decided to try & flash/update the BIOS.

I D/L the BIOS update onto a floppy disk. I rebooted my PC, during the POST @ the bottom it states to hit "ATL+F2" to enter the AwardFlash Utility. I assume this is how one flashed/updates the BIOS. Hey everyone,

I recently upgraded to a VNF4 Ultra from chaintech, and I know two people here
have that model motherboard, and I was just wondering how long you've had your boards and if you've had any problems with them.
I ask this because I read a lot of customer reviews for the mobo, and some people said theirs died after about 7 months use. And I really hope mine doesn't die!!

Thanks in advance.

A:Those who own a vnf4 ultra motherboard.. Just needed to know 1 thing.

Hello, I've had mine since January 18, 2005, so in a few days, it will have run for 1yr. It's been stable, even being overclocked for the majority of the time I've used it. Only problem I had so far with the rig was when the lightning got it, killed my surge protector and the psu, but the board/cpu/video were ok. Got the surge protector replaced under warranty. My vnf4 is different than current ones a little bit, it's "passively cooled", so it has no fan on the chipset(but I added a 40mm fan myself to the cooler), and the board itself is blue instead of black, but other than that, it's the same. I'm using the 4.0 bios, it works well, good oc'ing(vcore works in this bios), and fan speed control. Vnf4ultras were cheap for a while, as low as $65, I paid $129, when it came out, and it was in such demand, I was lucky to get it at all at the time. Even at that price, it's a good board.

I've just installed Wiin MCE (media centre) edition. I loaded up the latest realtek audio drivers. It detects everything. Plugged in my headphones in the green jack, it auto sensed it.
Played mp3s and heard nothing. Ran a speaker setup test that came with the realtek, and again, silence. Looked at the volume controls, and its all good.

I also attached a front panel audio to the motherboard, and that has no sound as well.

Anyone have any ideas whats going on? I need sound

A:No Audio from my nForce4 Ultra motherboard (ECS KN1 Extreme)

Try going into Control Panel, then open up Sound and Audio Devices. Select the Devices tab, if no Audio devices are selcted then the drivers are not installed correctly and that'll be why you have no sound. I'm not too familiar with Media Centre, so i hope it's still the same for you.

Hi folks, my MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum is GONE :dead:, and I had 5 disks on it:

Disk 1: No RAID - OS - WinXP installed
Disk 2+3: RAID.0 on Nforce4 Ultra MCP controller (onboard)
Disk 4+5: RAID.0 on Sillicon Image Sil3114 controller (onboard)

Questions are:

1- Anyone knows if ANY CURRENT Nforce/Nvidia motherboards model is RETRO COMPATIBLE with the legacy NFORCE4 controllers (with AMD Phenom CPU)?

-> In case not, any solution to access the RAID from the NForce4?

2- Since I think no new motherboards have Sillicon RAID controllers (now have AMD/NVIDIA only), anyone knows any PCI controller to attach to the new motherboard COMPATIBLE with the Sil3114? (I read that the new Sillicon controllers are generally compatible with the old ones), so I can access the Disk 4+5.

(I'm planning to migrate to AMD Phenom II X3 710 at the same time)

Thank you!

A:Moving RAID.0 arrays to new motherboard - from Nforce4 Ultra + Sil3114

You might try buying another MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum. Yeah, I know they're old but I did a quick check on Ebay and a few were listed. They all seem to be used but it could solve your problem.

Hi all =). I'm getting a computer made with a 450w power supply. I'm getting a Geforce 6800 Ultra at least, but the company recommends a 480w supply for this card. I've heard of people having problems with their power supply not being able to cope with this card, but I don't know exactly at what power their power supplies ran. Will I run into any problems with the power supply I'm getting, or should I upgrade to 480w or more?

Don't know if you need this information also, but I think this may also effect my power supply:

Asus K8V SE Deluxe Motherboard
Athlon 64 3400+
1.5 GB pc3200 DDR Ram
120 GB HDD

Also heard that AMD uses less power than Intel or something...sooo I was thinking that perhaps my graphics card will not be affected as much because of this...but dunno. Help would be greatly appreciated =D.

A:Regarding Geforce 6800 Ultra, Ultra Extreme, or Asus v9999 Ultra Deluxe

One, Use a title once.

Two, nope nVIDIA GeForce 6800 families or newer REQUIRES 480w of psu minimum, PERIOD. it is not matter how much watts amd or intel uses, what you means that you must have 480w or higher to have GF 6800 working properly.

Recommendation, get ATI Radeon 9600XT or 9800XT, they merely used up less than 350w.

You will get better games or things out of ATI instead of nVIDIA due to power usages

It started off when I went on vacation came back and my PC would beep. It was a 6 second beep pause 6 second beep, on and on... The monitor remained blank the mouse didn't work, nor did the keyboard. Everything inside was functioning properly fans/cpu/ect... Once and a while I could get it to work but the monitor would turn off. I then took out the cables/ram sticks and put them back in. The pc would turn on but the error Floppy DIsk (40) error or something would pop up I hit f1 and just moved on the computer would result to crashing. and the beeping would continue if I turned it on. Sometimes it would boot sometimes it wouldn't. The weird part about the floppy is I don't have one. I then completely removed my MOBO. and put it back in. Now The diode that was beeping doesn't work and nor does the monitor/keyboard/mouse... I am thinking the only thing to do now is get a new mobo I already tried a gfx card. I think it's just a crappy mobo but if anyone knows anything lemme know.

A:Motherboard Nvidia 650i ultra problem

A power surge or power failure while you were on vacation, probably damaged the motherboard. It sounds like the CMOS settings were corrupted, Have you tried resetting the CMOS? From now on, turn off the computer when you are away for more than 24 hours

Would it be bad to put a x1800xt in an nForce4 Ultra chipset on an Asus board?

I built my system for a 7900GT but the one I bought from BFG was defective and now I want to go with an ATI card because I've read too much about the 7 series having artifacting issues despite good power and cooling.

I know they are compatible but would I run into trouble using this setup? Will I lose alot of performance in not utilizing ATI's own chipset, the xpress 200 (or whatever it's called?). Will I lose certain features? I'm just afraid because obviously nvidia made the nForce platform.

My setup:

64 3800+ x2
Asus A8N-E rev. 2.0
2gb PC3200

A:Ok to use an ATI x1800xt 512mb in an nForce4 Ultra chipset?

the xpress 200 is essentially a video card physically embedded into the motherboard in the small chip form. It is not necessary to have the Xpress 200 to get better performance with an ATI video card since you disable the Xpress 200 chip instructions whenever using an aftermarket video card in the AGP/PCI-E slot. the NForce 4 is just a bridge chip that Nvidia produced. You can use ATI flawlessly with the nForce4 chipset.

512M RAM
Win2K Pro SP4
Sony HMDA400/L monitor

I normally have res @ 1600x1024x32

Opening Outlook Express then selecting the Inbox causes the monitor to go black, click then reappear. This is repeatable every time. Sometimes the screen doesn't come back but rather just goes off like it lost the video signal. The system is usually still running and I can sometimes blindly type in a restart command.

Web pages like www.startheatres.com just start their Flash display and it loses the video signal.

Sometimes open windows don't have their display refreshed and I have to run another window over top or minimize then restore to get it back. Norton Utilities windows do this a lot.

I've changed drivers a few times trying to fix this. I've dl'd PowerStrip to try and lock the refresh rates, etc. The most current (43.xx) Detonators seemed to make it slightly worse. Changing memory/clock timings on car and mb didn't help...

I had a similar problem with a GeFroce 3 that I solved by locking the refresh to 60Hz. No luck on this.

Any ideas ?

Im building a new rig and really cant afford to buy it all at once so im gonna buy a part at a time over the next 4/5/6 months, I suck at saving money so I have to do it this way instead of saving all the money up and then buying all the parts at the same time...LOL Anyway I was gonna get my motherboard now (ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX) but my question is will this board still be at the top in 6 months? I dont know much about all this hardware stuff so I dont know whats coming any time soon. I would hate to get this now and then 5/6 months from now a new better motherboard is out just when im about to get my new computer all bought.

A:A8N-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX?

You could always buy the other components first, and leave the mobo untill nearer the time for the actual build. That way you`d be more aware of what new mobo`s were around.

Just my 2 cents.

Does anyone know whether there have been any comparitive test results between the two? I understand the 8800GT is a slower card but by how much?

The reason for the curiosity is because I'm near done with a PC build. I'm essentially looking to work my way up versus going BIG from the start but it seems to make more sense to go with one 8800GT for starters and add another down the road if needed versus start with one 8800 Ultra and add another down the road given it's rediculous price. Could ultra prices cheapen down the road, likely.

I would like a stutter free 1920x1200 at full AA and AF via DX10. Do you think twin 8800GT's would cover this?

They will be plugged into a EVGA 680i SLI, running a E6850 at 2gb of Corsair Extreme memory.

A:Nvidia 8800GT vs 8800 Ultra....

I would go with the 8800 Ultra. If you do this, you won't need to run two in SLI mode. Trust me. I'm running a single 8800 GTX and there is really no reason for me to run two in SLI mode.

so i built a computer with a msi k8n neo4 platinum. until recently i did not bother installing the acitve armor and fire wall (one of the reasons i bought this mobo) but every time i try to install it it crashes and gives me 0x0000007e . i have to use the windows install cd to go into recovery propmt and copyeid pci.sys to c:\windows\system32\drivers. this works but i tried to install 6.66 driver from nvidia and when i tried to install it it crashed again when it reached the network part. clearly the nividia 4 ultra is conflicting with the system because it runs on a pci channel, any ideas how to stop this, and does the fire wall and active armor need the software to work?

A:Nvidia 4 ultra chipset corrupting pci.sys

Coupla things... first off I would try another mobo driver. Then I would forget about the nvid firewall as xp has a better one, and it's far faster than any 3rd party software firewall as it runs in the xp kernel.

Hi Guys,

Have recently been given a PC for repair but have come across the error Code on the post Boot LCD's. This code is "FF"

I have downlaoded the manual and tried to look up the code but it only says "Boot"

Can anyone help me with exactly what the error is.
Does it mean that the mohterboard is dead?

Thanks in advance

A:Nvidia 790i Ultra FF error

"FF" on Nvidia boards stands for Fully Functional
If the board goes through the usual POST then shows "FF" then it's an add in component problem. If the board shows "FF" at the start then the board is toast- which could be a loose component (try gently pushing down on the BIOS chip- they sometimes work themselves loose).
Any beep codes, any diagnostic LED's showing (specially if they are orange/red) ? -Assuming the board isn't going through the usual POST procedure -and also assuming the board is a reference model (XFX or EVGA for instance).

OK, here goes. I have a 32MB Nvidia TNT2 Ultra video card. However MOST of the time, the system won't recognize it as anything other than a standard VGA card. Every now and then it'll actually show as the correct card and when that happens it works GREAT (for a while), then all the sudden it's back to standard VGA again.

This happens in 98SE and 2K, I have 2 older Rage cards that I have no trouble with. Unfortunately I DON'T have another machine that I can put this card in right now.

Have all the latest drivers (that I can find) for everything, problem has persisted through a reformat and reload.

I have a GeForce 8600 video card and it boasts this PureVideo technology to enhance DVD playback. I thought that by simply buying the card would be all I needed to do to enjoy the benfits of this PureVideo stuff but now I'm not too sure. I also have Nero7 Ultra Enhanced which comes with Nero Showtime , Nero's media player.
I notice that Nero Showtime has a box in the options that is to enable hardware acceleration, so if I enable it does that mean my PureVideo technology will now be enabled ?
I am confused because I read somewhere that I need to buy NVidia's PureVideo decoder separately and that it doesnt work with some other dvd players such as PowerDVD . I am pretty sure that Nero also supports all of the newest formats and I dont want to buy an encoder if I dont need one.
I went to the NVidia website and it says that the decoder is a plug-in designed to work with windows media player(WMP) and is windows media center edition certified but I really don't want to use WMP as my primary DVD player.
Does anybody know anything about the purevideo technology and what I need to do to get it to work ? Any help would be greatly appreciated

I've recently bought an NVidia 6800 Ultra which intermitently freezes during 3DMark05. The freezing causes everything, including mouse activity, to halt for a few seconds at a time.

I have monitored my system temperatures and note that they idle as follows:

NVidia 6800U GPU: 53degC
System temperature: 34degC
Athlon 64 6300+ temperature 45degC

And at peak (throught freezing spells):

NVidia 6800U GPU: 72degC
System temperature: 35degC
Athlon 64 6300+ temperature 57degC

If I run Prime95, then I can get the CPU up to 62degC, but no higher.

I believe the danger temperatures for the CPU to be 70degC+. However, I could not find anywhere what the max temp is for the GPU. though I note that the NVidia Tool offers a default threshold of 115degC.

I have swapped out the videocard for a Radeon 9800 Pro, and whilst the performance is obviously slower, it doesn't freeze.

I have aso experienced intermittent freezing whilst playing World Of Warcraft on full settings.

I have swapped out both Crucial memory sticks with no difference.

The motherboard is an ASUS K8N-E Deluxe.

My next courses of action is to lend the video card to a friend for him to test on his machine.

Anyway, you'd think this is a cut-and-dry case of videocard problems. Well, so did I. I sent the card back to Scan Computers International, whom I bought the card from, and who claimed to run the card through a half hour test on doom, far-cry, ,and 3dMark05 with... Read more

Further symptoms:

The credits towards the end of 3DMark05 most repeatably demonstrate what is otherwise a very intermittent problem.

Turning AGP speed to 4x does not fix the problem.

Turning Fast Writes off DOES fix the problem (or rather works around it).

I'm not satisfied with this workaround as it degrades performance, but it does help to narrow down the possibilities of where the real fault could be.

Perhaps with incompatibilities on my K8N-E mboard and fast writes?

Yesterday my Dell XPS Gen 2 laptop (from back in 2005) started getting some terrible display artifacts. They are there as soon as the computer comes on (at BIOS), but only when the screen is trying to display something (i.e. Not when the screen is on, but nothing to display). There is a variety of different artifacts, and I'm not sure what to call of them. Here are the ones I've noticed
shifting of single-pixel, small, vertical sections (e.g. I can see part of my mouse move on the left side of the screen when the mouse is on the right side)
blinking smiley faces and accented e's
complete disarray of colors
screen blackouts
artifacts accumulate in moving windows

Along with these, I've been getting some BSODs. The stop codes I can recall are 8E, 50, and EA. The BSOD pops up when I try to boot normally, but not when I boot in Safe Mode. The artifacts are still there in safe mode.

I've run a few diagnostics that I know to do, such as Dell's diagnostic utilities (from the F8 or F12 bootup menu) and Memtest86+. Memtest is still running, but I've gotten 5 passes with it. The dell diagnostics give me several errors. I don't know if anyone here knows how the Dell errors translate, but here are ones I've gotten:

If so, this should allow you to function with basic video drivers, and you may not have the artifacting.
Not a solution, but it will allow you to do some work with your system, perhaps to deal with bad drivers... or at least to backup your data.
Try changing resolution, and color settings (display modes) to see if you can "relieve" the issue to do basic work.

3. Check the use of Driver Sweeper.
This will help you to fully eliminate bad graphics drivers if they are at fault.

Perhaps Route44 will notice this thread an offer his thoughts too.
Also there is a video memory stress test. I will see if I can find the link and add it to this post.

Here is Freestone's benchmarking tool
Here is Furmark.
Furmark is recommended by Jonathan King, one of our BSOD team now.

Will ATI X800 PRO or nVidia 6800 ULTRA will be better?

nVidia recons itz goina be the fastest card for a long time, but ATI says itz X800 will beat it.

I recon 6800 will woop a... lol, itz goina have 240 (I think) million transistors and 512 DDR3 RAM. Yeh, I know...

.. on an ASUS K8N-E Deluxe, Athlon 64 3400+, 1gb PC3200 RAM.

My system regularly freezes with fastwrites enables, but works fine if I disable it.

So I have a few (well, four) questions:

1) Why is this hapenning? What is it about fastwrites which causes my system to crash?
2) Could I regard one or other bits of my hardware to be "faulty"?
3) Is there any software yet available which will enable me to use fastwrites and have a stable system?
4) Is this a common problem?

A:NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra Fastwrite problems

This is a common problem with some video cards, and not something you should worry about.

This is a compatibility issue with some videocards, and mobo chipsets.

Just leave fastwrites off.

Faswrites are supposed to increase performance, but frequently cause stability issues.

If you do a google search for "fastwrites" you`ll see what I mean.

About 2 days ago i was playing a game on my computer when the game froze up all of the sudden and i had to restart. When i restarted my computer it showed the bios screen displaying white lines running vertically in pairs of four down my screen. Currently the only way i can start Windows is via safemode where the vertical lines still display my computer information is displayed below

Cpu = Athlon 64 FX-53
Mobo = Giga-byte GA-K8NNXP-940
Video Card = evga Nvidia Geforce FX 5700 Ultra 4x/8x agp

I have reset my computer many times and reset and updated my bios as well. The video card did not have anything blocking the fan to cause it to overheat. I also checked the monitor plug and plugged a additional monitor into the video card but it still did not work. If anyone could give me any ideas it would be greatly appriciated.

welcome to techspot

are u over clocking your FX5700, if so reset it back to stock temperature. the problem is that the card is getting overheated(trust me i had a similar problem with my old 5700le) try putting up couple of more fans also u can try installing third party cooling solutions (like the one from ZAlman)

Hi my first post on these forums. I'm running Windows XP. As I mentioned in the title I am using a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra. Lately when I try to play World of Warcraft my computer will load up the video game and then once in the game it will suddenly crash to a blank screen. Sometimes my computer will stop responding (when it does this it, it will go to a BSOD after a few seconds) and other times my monitor will just go into sleep mode randomly as if my computer just turned off (but the computer remains on).

Not sure what info I need to post here. I've checked My Computer > C: > Windows > Minidump as other threads have talked about but when I get into the folder I don't see anything.

I've also tried reinstalling my Nvidia drivers but that didn't fix anything.

A:0xEA nv4_disp on NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra

Try the following concerning video drivers:

1. Download Driver Cleaner Pro or Driver Sweeper (both have free versions; make sure the version will work with your OS) to your desktop screen and install.

2. Download the latest diver(s) for your video card but don't install them.

3. Uninstall your video card drivers and reboot your PC into Safe Mode. Run Driver Cleaner Pro or Driver Sweeper but ONLY for the video card drivers. I had someone use it on their chipset drivers! If it doesn't find any video card drivers that is quite okay.

4. Reboot and install new video card drivers.

Do the following to enable Minidump Files to be created:

1. Right click My Computer > click Properties > click Advance tab

2. The Advance Screen at the bottom right has Error Reporting. Click this on.

3. Click Enabled error reporting and also check both boxes underneath: Windows operating system and Programs.

4. Now click Choose Programs and click All Programs. Then click Okay and that screen will close. At the next screen click Okay and that will close.

5. You are back to the Advance screen. Find the Start up and Recovery which has underneath it System startup, system failure, and debugging information. Click the Settings box.

6. Another screen will open. You want the System failure section. Enable all three boxes.

7. Under these boxes is Write debugging information. Choose the option Small memory dump (64kb). Click OK and that screen will close.

I have an Nvidia 6800 Ultra card. Two months ago all mpeg, avi, etc. clips started playing in what I describe as ghostly images. Color is distorted with a gray and white tint. Happens on all saved clips, news clips, entertainment clips, etc. Initially thought my card was going bad but have ran various tests and AquaMark3 with excellent results. I also play games (DOOM3, HalfLife2, etc.) with excellent resolution. I did a clean install of operation system and everything from ground up but still have the same problem. Any suggestions for troubleshooting?

I am cosidering overclocking my 2 geforce 8800 ultra's from 768mb to at least 1024mb

And i also would like to overclock my quad core 2.5 to about 2.9 - 3.0
but befroe i do, i would like to know if any has made this possible before.

Don't want to start O/Cing and something goes wrong, bearing in mind this will be my first time O/Cing.

Any help on this matter would be great.

Main purpose is to have all the settings on GTA4 on highest possible and still have memory left over to play without probs.

much apreciated.

Specs are as follows:

Vista Ultimate x64 Build 6001 with SP1
Intel Core2Quad Q9300 2.5GHz
8GB Kingston Hyperx Ram
2x Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra 768mb (XFX/EVGA)
ThermalTake 1200w Power Supply.
Samsung 500Gb SATA HDD
Samsung DVD/RW
Cooling - 140 mm Top fan, 120mm Rear fan, 12mm Front Fan, Artic Cooler Freezer pro 7

A:Overclocking an Nvidia 8800 Ultra/ Quad Core 2.5

You can't overclock your Ultra like that. You can only overclock the frequency speeds, like the core speed and memory speed, not the amount of physical memory.

Overclocking your CPU from 2.5 to 3.0GHz should be easy. I overclocked my CPU from 2.66GHz to 3.0GHz easily with no problem.

Your graphic cards are fine for GTA4. GTA4 doesn't use SLI yet, and 1 Ultra is enough. A friend of mine is running GTA4 with a Core i7 920 and a single Ultra and he gets 65fps on max everything.

Core i7s run GTA4 amazingly, quad cores run it well, but still get some slowdowns on maximum everything.

Alright, I'm back with another issue. I decided I wanted to upgrade my kids' computer, but on a budget. I already had an extra Athlon XP 2200+ from a previous upgrade on my system and 512 MB of 333Mhz ram also from a previous upgrade. I decided to purchase a M7NCD Ultra motherboard since it was based on the Nforce 2 chipset that I was already familiar with and I purchased a BFG 5200 FX. I know it's not a screamer, but it plays what they are playing and is good for homework also.

The problem I am having is actually twofold and may or may not be related. First off, whenever I start the computer from a cold boot, I get a system disc error. If I just ctrl-alt-del at that point, the system boots right up. Also reboots just fine in Windows. No issue at all. Second issue is that when I try to use the DVD drive in the PC, the disc spins up and a somewhat loud click can be heard and the pc will either reboot, or just freeze up completely. The DVD and the hard drive are both fine since both were used right up until the new mobo was put into the system, and were running fine with no issues. I'm thinking the new components (mobo, higher clock processor and higher clock ram) may be showing a weakness in the power supply, but I can't quite figure it out. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, I can always count on the Techspot Forums!

A:Problems with M7NCD Ultra Motherboard

Just to let whoever searches for this or just comes across it, I fixed it myself. It was the power supply with both issues. No more problems with the system disk and the dvd drive works just fine.

Howdy y'all,
The PC is an Asus A8N-E mobo with the NVidia NForce4 Ultra chipset; 4GB is installed. Configuration is essentially default and no overclocking. It's been running XP Pro SP3 x86 reliably for several years. The system was behaving normally until the user
observed that the screen resolution suddenly decreased. Icons are huge and it's difficult to find the buttons on which to click in each dialog.
Rebooting to Safe Mode is not an improvement. This isn't what we expected given that Safe Mode loads the default VGA driver. A sudden change like this suggests unstable hardware but there have not been BSODs.
The only recent hardware change that I'm aware of is a new monitor, but that was several weeks ago, and wouldn't have an effect anyway.
The NVidia drivers for XP and this mobo are still available. What's the best way to troublshoot this problem?
Thanks much.

A:Suddenly, only 4-bit resolution and enlarged display; XP Pro SP3 and NVidia NForce 4 Ultra

Thanks to all for your helpful posts. We replaced the video adapter and the system is stable.

I need help deciding... I'm either going to get the ASUS Radeon X850XT PE, or 2 ASUS GeForce 6800 Ultras (SLI.) The X850 is around $700, and the 2 Geforces are around $1400. Please help me decide which is better in PERFORMANCE, I am not looking for value.

A:ASUS ATI Radeon X850XT PE VS. nVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra SLI

Apples & Oranges

Well the only flaw in your thinking is that a 256MB has a snowball's chance in hell of competing with a 512MB dual video card setup. With SLI using the 6800 Ultra, you are not just doubling the memory, you are effectivly using two 1.1GHz GPUs to reak havok upon any game you could possibly throw at them. I know you said that you are not looking for best "value" but overall system performance. Hands down, the SLI config would be the obvious winner here.

With that said, the X850XT-PE is a smoking fast card. It boasts more features than the 6800 Ultra, and actually has a faster GPU when comparing against only one 6800 Ultra. For $700 you are no doubt gonna be the big boy on the block for quite a while. Most casual gamers are not going to drop that kinda look for a video card, for that matter, many of them may not have even spent that on their computer.

In summation, for raw brute-force power to handle anything you throw at it, the 6800 Ultra/SLI config is clearly the victor here.

Since installing my new motherboard, Windows XP Pro (service packs 1 and 2) has not been able to boot up w/ the PS2 keyboard working.

I can go into device manager and re-install the exact same driver by selecting it from the list and it will work. The driver install wizard cannot do it on its own, it will see that its the same driver and tell me it doesnt work.

Any ideas as to what is causing this? Its a real annoyance to have to manually re-install the generic keyboard driver every time I boot the system, and I'd really like to be able to use a password for my windows account.

I think I remember reading somewhere that its possible that USB devices and PS2 devices can conflict some how, however I've not had this problem with any of my previous motherboard setups, with the very same keyboard and mouse.

And maybe I just need a new keyboard and mouse! Hm. I should give that a shot.

System Specs:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-9 (nForce 4)
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+
RAM: 2x 1gb DDR 400
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2
Generic PS2 Keyboard (by Antec)
Logitech Mouseman Wheel (USB optical mouse)
PROBLEM RESOLVED: Found out from a guy with a similar problem, same motherboard, same OS, that for some reason in the BIOS, "USB Mouse Support" Must be set to "Disabled" even though it is a USB mouse. I did this, booted up windows, it re-installed the mouse drivers, and all works fine now.

Password-cracking chip causes security concerns.

A technique for cracking computer passwords using inexpensive off-the-shelf computer graphics hardware is causing a stir in the computer security community.

Using the "massively parallel processing" capabilities of a graphics processing unit (GPU) - the processor normally used to produce realistic graphics for video games, the speed of password cracking was increased by a factor of 25 - and a Russian company has filed for a U.S. patent on the technique.

My buddy can't make up his mind! nVIDIA GeForceFX 5900 Ultra or ATI Radeon 9800 Pro...

He says that from what he has read on tomshardware and on anandtech that the GeForceFX 5900 Ultra (witht the new 52.14 drivers) is better than the Radeon 9800 Pro.

now, they are both the same price, and the image quality of both is the same (since nVIDIA's new driver architecture is opimized for the hardware....which, i personally did NOT realize...so i am no longer an nVIDIA hater anymore).

But in tests, the Radeom 9800 Pro is cleary faster! and take in mind 4xFSAA and 8xAF... i don't know where he is getting his sources from...he told me where he got them from, but i don't see what he sees.

He knows more about computers than i do (way more!) but i don't understand his logic in this issue, and he wanted me to give him my insight on it, even though he said that he was leaning for the nVIDIA.

He's kind of an nVIDIA loyalist too, but could you guys give me your insight.

here are the 3 sources which he cited:
