[SOLVED] .avi files not playing in Windwos Media Player on Vista after DivX installed

Q: [SOLVED] .avi files not playing in Windwos Media Player on Vista after DivX installed

Hello there guys, I am having a real problem with my Windows Media Player 11 playing .avi files.

My digital camera records videos and they have played on my machine with WMP no problem at all until yesterday. When I click on the file to play it it says "Window Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assitance, click Web Help."

I have had had a good around and I can't resolve this problem. The problem seems to have occured since I installed DivX Player, Codec etc.. (the installer package). Since then I have tried uninstalling it to go back to how it was and also tried doing a system restore to the point before but still the same problem.

Don't know what to do but this problem also effect Windows movie maker, it won't player the avi files in there either, please help.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi ellisd5, as far as i'm aware Divx is not Vista compatible but don't quote me on that. Best thing I can suggest is to download and install the latest stable release of K-Lite codec pack as that may restore normal functionality to your avi files (be sure to remove any currently installed codec packs first though).

Hope that helps

Hi. I have been using Divx for the past 3-4 years to convert .avi files to Divx to be played on my Phillips DVD player (which plays Divx files).

For the past couple of months I've been having problems with the DivX Player that burns the files onto dvds - it just doesn't work. I can load the files like normal, it shows me that it's transferring, and after anywhere from 30 seconds to 1 1/2 minutes, it tells me transfer has been completed, when in actuality, nothing has been done.

I have contacted Divx about this, and have received no suitable solution to this problem. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Divx+, as well as older version of Divx, but all to no avail.

One of the features I liked about Divx was the ability to fit multiple files onto one dvd (I could fit anywhere between 4-6 movies). And, of course, the fact that we could view these films on our regular TV, via our Divx compatible DVD player.

I don't know if you're aware of this problem. If you are, do you have any recommendations as to how to deal with it?

If not, could you recommed another converter/burner that will allow me to burn multiple files onto a dvd to be played on my dvd player?

Thank you.

A few days ago, some site asked me to install the DivX player on my computer. Ever since then, though, Windows Media Player (DEFINITELY my player of choice) has stopped displaying the video part of any video file. It just acts like it's an audio file. In addition, my video editing software won't display any newly-converted AVI files. I need to get WMP working properly again for videos as soon as possible. Will uninstalling DivX be enough, or will I need to download a codec - and if I do, can I have as simple a download site as possible?

A:Solved: DivX causing major problems with Windows Media Player

Start by uninstalling the DivX player using Add and Remove programs. That may resolve the issue, but it may not. The main problem being that installing a new media player, aside from installing new codecs, often changes file associations.

Hi All,
I have just bought a new machine with Vista Home Premium and it is running great but is not playing video files. I can hear the audio but no video. This happens regardless of whether it is playing inmedia player, or I am creating a DVD in pre installed movie maker or DVD Maker.

Is it just a codec pack or driver files it might be missing... or some other nasty?

Thanks in advance.... Beagleboy.

A:Playing DVD and AVI files in Media Player

You could be missing a CODEC, what type of file is it? This utility can tell you: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

There's also a chance that the video card driver needs to be updated, there's lots of little glitches with display drivers at the moment.

I've not long had Vista (Home Premium) and the windows media player that came with it used to play the .ts files that I'd exported from my digibox hard drive. Then - for apparently no reason - Media Player decided that it was no longer going to open the files, not even the ones that it had opened previously. It came up with the cood1199 error, but I don't understand why it's stopped playing them as it used to. It's infuriating. I don't want to have to download another program to play them when Media Player should - as it *did* - play them. Is there anything that I can do to get it to play what it used to play?

Have you tried a system restore back to when you know this worked or is this to far in the past? Have you tried to play the files with something like Realplayer. I know that you want to use WMP long term but this would confirm that it is a WMP issue.

Also found this link if it helps.

Hello,

I have a memory card camcorder that records video as .ASF files (MPEG4 I think too) and until now have had no problem playing back the video files that I have recorded.

I've recently had to do a full system wipe of my computer due to various issues. Now I have a bang up to date version of Windows Media Player 10 as well as all the codecs packs. However the .ASF videos just won't play properly, the videos stop and start every second with huge gaps in between each frame. Windows Media Player also crashes with playing these files, I tried RealPlayer which also delivers exactly the same results.

I'm totally stuck with what to do,

Thanks for any help you will be able to give me in advance,

A:Trouble playing ASF files and Windows Media Player

Sounds like it might be a codec problem. Do a google search for a program called gspot (you can guess why I won't do one at work -.-;; ) It opens a file and reads what codec's its trying to use. Giving that output about the audio and video codec would let us know what those files are using in particular and can hunt down a way to fix it.

My uncle got DSL a couple of months ago and I've downloaded several large and small video clips and saved them to cd-rw's so that I could bring them home and put them on my computer, but I've encountered a problem when I try to view some of the clips. Some clips say ANOBOLIC when I try to open them and they won't play on either my laptop or my desktop pc, but I can open and view them fine on my uncle's computer. What do I need to download to fix this problem?

The other problem that I am having is that I saved some video clips that range from 15 to 30 minutes, and when I put the cd in either my laptop or desktop pc a couple of the clips say that they are 1 or 2 minutes when they are really 15 to 30 minute clips. Again, I am able to view all of the clips perfectly on my uncle's computer.

At first I thought that the problem was with the cd-rw's, but since they work fine on my uncle's computer I have to believe that it is a problem with the media player. I've tried playing them with Realplayer and a couple other media players, but I keep having the same problem. Got a new computer at work (Dell Optiplex 760 w 3.25 GB RAM - running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3). When I try to play my music files (originally downloaded from purchased CD's on my old computer) on this new computer through Windows Media Player the sound is stuttering. Randomly. When I go into the control panel on my computer and click on the "sounds and audio devices" icon it says SoundMax HD Audio. I'm assuming that's the sound card? The music files are local on my hard drive. It's driving me crazy....and I'm not a sophisticated computer user. Help. Thank you.

Hello there and apologies if it has been posted before (though I couldn't find it anywhere). I have two PCs running Windows Vista Business 32-bit since the RTM version. In other words they have survived long enough to download updates via Windows Updates, install both Service Packs etc.For some time now I experience the 10 - 25 second delay when playing a MP3 file in WMP. This delay appears to happen only once per Windows boot. Now, this does sound odd so I've tried to troubleshoot myself. When playing an MP3 file WMP launches mfpmp.exe file and this is how it's meant to be even though the files aren't DRM protected. Using Process Monitor I've found that before the process launches wmplayer.exe "pokes around" %systemroot%\system32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} folder. By "poking around" I mean querying file information (among other things) on most if not on every file. This introduces the delay during startup of playback as there are about 1400 *.cat files around. It can be clearly seen in Process Monitor summary that it takes even 25 seconds (depending on other hard disk activity) to "get through" the folder. It appears that the module responsible for file activity is CI.dll (code integrity). I would speculate that verifying the signatures (or whatever it's doing at this point) is a prerequisite to the launch of mfpmp.exe which plays the MP3 file. However WMP is checking the *.cat files that doesn't appear to be relevant to medi... Read more

I'm having trouble opening DivX files in Windows Media Player. I know WMP will play DivX files because I'm using a home theater database program for WMP called CineCenter that can open them in media player. Works great and real slick, but I can't double click on a Divx movie file myself to open them in WMP. It always opens in the Divx player... which is ok I guess but when Cinecenter launches my Dvix movies in WMP they play BETTER than they do in the Divx player! Ain't that funny?! (There's a tear across the screen in the Divx player but when I use Cinecenter, they play perfectly clear in WMP. whatever!) So, how can I make Divx files play in WMP like CineCenter is doing it?

Oh..! I'm not trying to "defeat" Cinecenter in any way, I love using it. Just that when I back-up my DVD collection for use in CineCenter, I'd like to know how to use WMP all the time ...instead of the Divx player!

A:DivX in Win Media Player?

Simple. Right-Click the file you want to play, then go to Properties. You'll see the file type and the program it opens with...you want to change the file it opens with, so next to opens with you'll see Browse.....here you can browse for the respective program you want it to open with. Also at the bottom you'll see Always use this program for the selected kind of file, then click that if you always want WMP to play it. Hit OK and your set.

hi there! first time poster here, also a first time vista user. i just installed vista ultimate 64 bit.. so far it has been a minor struggle, but a common learning curve with a new operating system.

right now i'm having some problems with the media player. i installed divx and the playback works somewhat sufficiently. the problem i'm having is a bit of horizontal flicker. the picture just doesnt seem very clear, and when i have a video in full screen i can see a lot of horizontal flicker. to try to explain in words is difficult but it seems like every odd x number of horizontal lines are a bit off. the video seems jagged.

so far it seems to only happen with divx videos. when i try opening the same files using the included "divx player", the picture seems just fine. it's only within media player do i have these visual distortions.

any help would be fantastic!

Well you could install the latest Divx player from Divx.com by you'll also be getting a pile of adware and since it works with WMP. I prefer WMP myself over Divx, which is very basic.

If you the Divx bundle you may want to get Adaware to remove the junk it installs. http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

In the Library tab click on Monitor Folders and set the top part to "My personal folders", then click on Advanced Options.

Set all the folders to "Ignore". Unfortunately you can't set the Rip folder to "Ignore" so for that go to the Rip music tab, where it says "Rip music to this location" click on Change and create an empty folder somewhere. Then just never add any music files to that folder.

Then delete everything out of the WMP library and it should remain empty.

I listen to talk radio online. I had been listening to KFI AM640 for quite some time, then all of a sudden was not able to listen to it.

Their support staff were not able to help, claiming thousands of people are still listening, my isp was not able to help claiming they are able to access it. I checked my settings with them and apparantly everything is on the right setting. According to them, I should be able to listen.

I can hear streaming from every other radio station I attempt to connect to. The only one I can't hear is KFI.

I have window XP home, I have Media player 10 and there is over 512mb of ram in my system.

Like I said, I was able to listen then two weeks ago, it wouldn't connect.
When I try to access this through media player (Rather than direct thru the site) This is the error message I get

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network error occurred. The server might not be available. Verify that you are connected to the network and that your proxy settings are correct."

Previously, when connecting thru the media player I would get "buffering" then it would start playing.. I don't get the "buffering" message now. All it does is show as if it's playing, then a minute or so later, I get that message. It doesn't play at all though.

I have checked my settings with my ISP, that is all correct. I've updated codecs, that made no difference.

Unfortunately, being a new user I can't p... Read more

When I insert a DVD, I want it to start with InterVideo WinDVD 4, but Windows Media Player insists on playing it. I have gone into Options in WMP, and unchecked DVD, but it reverts right back, and won't stay unchecked. I'm using WMP 10.0 on XP Pro. I think I saw a fix for this problem somewhere but can't find it.

Thanks very much for any help.

I think this is a problem since I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 but can't be sure. Basically if I put a music CD into my laptop drive, Windows Media player 12 not only doesn't automatically play it but when I open Windows Media no CD is recognised in the drive. But if I click on Windows Explorer the songs are shown (although won't play with WM). But they play with RealPlayer. This is clearly a WM problem then... all other CD/DVD functions are working, just not WM.

I followed the instructions below (from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116#nextsteps) and deleted two files from the registry as instructed but this made no difference. I also have run the Device Manager Troubleshooter for the drive and that didn't work. Also I tried Microsoft's Mr Fix it but that didn't either. Can anyone help me please?

Thanks

Richard
PS Obviously this means I can't rip CDs either!
