Subfolders in Downloads opening DUPLICATE windows

Q: Subfolders in Downloads opening DUPLICATE windows

I've noticed in the last week that whenever I double-click a sub-folder in the Downloads folder, it opens TWO identical new windows. It's super annoying and wasnt happening before. I scanned for Malware AND ran MS Defender. Both came out clean.

I should add that my Windows Explorer also now crashes every now and then. Meaning all my Explorer windows close down but Windows still operates.

Any tips on whats going on and how to fix this?

Preferred Solution: Subfolders in Downloads opening DUPLICATE windows

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey guys, morning to you. I have explorer pinned to the start menu. When I click it, it opens up my computer. When I double click on a drive, that drive opens in a new window, twice. So I have two windows open showing the same thing. If I single click and wait, nothing happens.

What causes this and how can I keep it from opening my D drive twice

After I installed sigma plot, when I create a new subfolder, I could not open excel under that folder. I have checked whether it has anything to do with read-only, but excel file in the other subfolders under the same folder can be opened. And then if I move the new subfolder which has the excel file up, parallel to the mother folder, the excel file can be then opened.
I then create a new folder parallel to the mother folder, put the excel file in, it opens fine. I move it into the mother folder, then it stopped opening again. What is the problem here?

I have 2 computers - an eMachines desktop and a Gateway laptop. They are both Windows 7, and I use Windows Live Mail on both. I use the desktop during the day, and set up the laptop on the bed for the evening before I go to sleep. I have 3 email addresses, and want to use the 3rd one on both computers. This way, I don't have to have my friends or groups writing to me at two different addresses, which is difficult to remember and complicated for them. When I'm not at the desktop, I want to receive the email from the 3rd address on the laptop, and vice versa.

The problem that arises is, I get full downloads of all emails for the day on both computers. Anything I've already received on the desktop is also received when I move to the laptop later in the day. Is there any way to stop these duplicate downloads?

I've had this problem for years. My Windows Live Mail 2012 frequently (not always) downloads duplicates of every new email. The email protocol is POP3. Someone suggested I should use IMAP. I tried it. . . but, at least with Comcast's system, IMAP duplicates what's on the server. . . which can go back several years of emails. . . which I DO NOT want to retain. Comcast provides no option to delete emails older that X days, so when I switched to IMAP, every g.d. email I've received in the last 3 years downloaded to my Inbox. So I went back to POP3.

So why do I get duplicates?

I have computer 1 with Office 365 Outlook - with email account. If I have a second computer and copy the .pst file from one computer to the other, I know that when I open Outlook all the existing emails will be there, calendar, etc. But if I have Outlook set to leave messages on the server, will the old messages be downloaded causing duplicates? I know that Outlook keeps an ID record of emails that are downloaded - but is this kept within the *pst file? If so then it should work that I can copy the *pst file and carry on without duplicates. I can understand that if I created a new blank account with nothing in it, then the old files would download...but will this still happen if I just copy & paste the email *pst account file across (keeping the name the same) - same Office 365....

Hello. I'm new here...I've read the instructions threads, so let's see if I can get this right.

I'm concerned that my computer may have a Nasty on it. When I first started using this computer (which was not new when I bought it), it had a 90-day trial version of McAfee on it. When the trial version expired, I wasn't in a position to do anything about it, and for the past few months my computer (it's a laptop, and I access the internet wirelessly) has been completely without any sort of protection.

Recently, a friend told me about Avast!, which they said was excellent and free. However, when I went to Google, searched for their website, and tried to click through to the site, boom: the browser window closed. No fireworks, no error message, nothing; it just shut down.

I reopened the browser window and tried again; same results. I opened a different browser (I usually use Firefox, so I tried IE); same thing. I tried typing the address directly into the location bar, accessing the website through a link on a friend's blog, and emailing myself the link and accessing it that way. The same thing always happens. The browser window closes down. It always starts right back up again, but when Firefox asks if i want to restore the page, it restores it to the last page I viewed before trying to click through to the Avast website.

Can anyone tell me what might be going on here? I tried a couple of different websites for free antivirus ... Read more

I hope this is the right forum. I'm having trouble opening my downloads (handheld softwear,Powerpoint templates, graphics). When I go to open them, they go into my Printshop Deluxe and so can't be opened. I've tried downloading to various places but it still happens. I've even tried deleting my Printshop but still occurs. Pleas Help. And thanks in advance!

A:opening downloads

Somehow you have changed your file associations to print shop deluxe. Two ways to fix it.

1. Go to the download, hold down the left shift key, right click, and select open with. By holding down the left shift key it will give you the open with option, not just the open. As long as you know what application to open with your fine. You can also check the box on the left hand side bottom saying always use this to open this type of file. That will modify your file association so the next time with that type of file it will remember.

2. Go to explorer, tools, folder options, file type's, find the offending file associations with print shop and delete them.

Depending exactly on what your downloading most have to be installed first. If the downloaded file is an .exe you should be able to just run the file to install the game. If it is a zip file you will need to unzip it to a known location and then run the setup file. If you need more help post the exact download.

I appreciate any suggestions.

A:IE 10 : Problems opening downloads

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Open would need a program to view the file which would usually be a .txt/ .doc/.. type of file,
An .exe file would usually show save with other items if you click on the menu list arrow

Save is the best way to do it although you can use save as instead
Save goes to the downloads folder where it is some what isolated from the system for limited damage if the file is not friendly....

So lets refer to your security shortly as to which one do you use ?
Usually is the first place that might interfere with download options of any browser.

I have been downloading trial software today and have uninstalled it all, but I have a problem now. An MHT file that I was using as my default home page no longer opens. Instead, IE wants to download the file (from my desktop to my downloads folder).Until very recently the file(or any .mht file) opened in IE10 just fine.
Now, IE10 will only download .mht files of any kind (not open them).
Chrome and Firefox do NOT exhibit the problem, they open the .mht files just fine.
I have a very simple example .mht attached, which will NOT open in IE10 for me, but opens in my other browsers just fine. A screen snapshot demonstrates the file is open in chrome (in the background) while in the foreground, IE is trying to download the file, prompting me to save it.

Environment: Windows 7 Pro (v 6.1 build 7601: SP1) with IE 10.0.9200.16721CO
Note: I have tried resetting IE back to all default settings. I have NOT tried to reinstall it.
I have a growing collection of .mht related forum posts across the web in a file folder now, none of which has produced an answer that works for me yet.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Download the .mht to your desktop
2. Open IE (my home page is current www.google.com, as shown in the picture)
3. Type in the location of the saved .mht file, example: file:///c:/users/yourname/desktop/demo.mht
4. Observe that the .mht file did not open; instead it tried to download to downloads directory.

Hello, I am working on my friends laptop attempting to remove a virus (assuming). When the computer boots up, all .exe files that are meant to start upon boot open a "View Downloads - Internet Explorer" window. Anytime I attempt to open any application, the same thing happens. Instead of opening the program, it again brings up the download dialog. And all exe files show the internet explorer icon instead of corresponding icon.
Steps I have taken:
 - I removed the hard-drive from said laptop, placed in my desktop and ran MalwareBytes Anti-Malware in an attempt to remove viruses. It didn't find much, just mainly some PUP's.
 - Made a secondary admin account, no problems there.
 - Ran rkill from both accounts, and nothing different on either account. Infected account still won't run applications
 - Tried running a registry fix for .exe file associations which failed on the infected account, and was "successful" on the second admin account. Led to no change on the infected account.
 - Tried reverting back to the OLDEST restore point possible, nothing.

I am so glad I found this site. My laptop has something bad on it that is causing the following problems.
When I use Google Crome automatically downloads small files every time I go to a different web page. It began also opening Crome when I was using other browsers so I removed Crome to stop that.
When I use Firefox and go to web sites specially ones that require log in info, Internet Explorer (IE) automatically opens to commercial websites. And sometimes I have to use Task Manger to get IE to close after these ads show up.
When I use Internet Explorer it almost always automatically opens another tab with a commercial web site. which causes IE to be very slow and lock up alot.
And last but the worst is this bad thing is somehow blocking all antivirus software from finding it and from checking all downloads for viruses all I get is a notice that reputation information is unavailable or unknown. I have downloaded and scanned using Norton, Mcaffe, and Dell virus and malware detect software and none of them can help other than finding alot of tracking cookies to remove.
I really hope there is something I can do to get rid of this nasty bad thing and get my laptop back.

Hi there. Connected an XP machine to my homegroup. It has access to several folders that are shared on a Windows 7 machine (I'll call them A, here). However, it refuses stubbornly to open others, which are shared on the same terms as the ones that can be opened (I'll call them B). So to try to trick, I moved a B folder and made it a subfolder of an A folder. Still nothing. My Windows 7 laptop opens the B subfolder with no problem, but still not the XP PC. Frustrating. Why can XP open some and not others? Thanks in advance for your tips.

A:XP has no access to shared Windows 7 subfolders

This is because Homegroups isn't made to work with other Op systems besides Windows 7.

To get your XP machine to work better with Homegroups try changing the Advanced network setting in the picture below to the one with the arrow pointing at it.

You can click on the "help me decide" link to see what this setting does. You might have better luck setting up a Workgroup for your mixed Op system network.

I have created new folders within my Hotmail folders such as Work, Social etc. and then created another level of nested folders within some of these... Work - financial, Work - appointments, Social - sport, Social - hobbies etc.

This has been working fine for many months but now when I go to my mailbox although the Work folder (for example) is showing, the nested folders within it are not, just a message which reads 'There are no items in this view'. I know the folder and messages are actually there somewhere because I can search for messages within the associated main folder ('Work' for example) and they appear in the resluts box and also when trying to create a duplicate nested folder (Work - financial) I am informed that the specified folder name already exists. This only occurs on my windows 7 machine and then only in Live Mail (its fine in Outlook) and my xp laptop is displaying the folder hierarchy correctly in all cases.

I have spent around 3 hours today searching for possible reasons but all in vain I am afraid!

u also should have a copy of your MS Office 2003 in case it asks you for it

I did a clean install of Windows 7 on a a second Dell Optiplex 780, identical to the one I talked about before, I bought another, installed Windows 7, plugged in a USB hard drive full of pictures, told one folder to view large icons, and sort by date modified, I right click properties and tell it to optimize for pictures and to "apply this template to all subfolders", that folder stays the same but none of the sub folders are applying what I just set, some are by details, some are showing by name, in fact none of the folders are following the template.
All I can find on this problem was a really old Windows Vista issue on this, but the problem they were having is different. There was nothing as regards to this problem for Windows 7.
Any ideas?

Can I get help please? In fact there is another problem I am having as well on a clean install of Windows 7. Windows update closes itself. I opened Windows Update, told it to check for updates, left the window open and went to bed, I slept 12 hours which is unusual, woke up, found out that nothing happened, in fact, the Windows Update window was closed, must have happened sometime overnight. I reopen it and it says "most recent check for updates: Never"
I am having more problems on a clean install than a computer loaded with junk
Any help?

A:Bug with opening folders in windows explorer on Windows 7 RTM - not opening in same window!

This happened on my Windows 7 PC and it was due to an install of Sourcegear Vault 3.0 that overwrites a registry entry used by many programs. The three it affected on my PC were Internet Explorer 8 (most links will not open), Windows Explorer (double click opens a new search window) and MS SQL Server Management Studio 2008 errors with COM error. This is all due to two registry entries containing {B8DA6310-E19B-11D0-933C-00A0C90DCAA9} overwriting the correct ones.To fix this, save the info below into a reg file and run it to correct the registry entries on your PC. A reboot is required to get the double click working correctly in Explorer.WARNING: Backup your registry or these registry entries below to be on the safe side.[COPY FROM]Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Hello guys,

Recently the windows store stopped working for me, well I say recently but I hadn't used it in a long time till recently so I don't know for how long it has actually been out of commission.

When I try to open it it will flash for a second before quickly closing. Searching the internet for solutions has shown me that this is a known issue.

So far I've tried a large number of things to try and fix it:

-Tried Windows Powershell
-Tried Win store Troubleshooter
-Tried making a new Microsoft account
-Tried using a local account
-Tried clearing the store cache and deleting its folders
-Tried messing around in regedit thinking it may be a permission issue
-Tried Win store reset
-Tried disabling firewall + antivirus and trying powershell + reset
-Tried a clean install of Windows 10

Nothings worked so far, so any new solutions would be greatly appreciated

Hi.I have a problem with IE 5.00.2614.3500. Whenever I Go to a web page and click on a link in that page a second smaller window opens up.But when I try to go back to the original page underneath it appears frozen and partially BLANK like the explorer bars on top are missing, etc. The only way to get out of this is to restart. I e-mailed MSFT and am waiting a reply.I also e-mailed website www.service911.com and they sent me to the MSFT site on how to uninstall IE5. BUT when I go to Control Panel and to Add Remove programs---IE 5 is NOT LISTED!!. So went to the next URL first...http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q217/3/44.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0
This url described how to uninstall but it said if you CANNOT FIND IE 5 in he ADD Remove BOX to DO THIS THEN...IN the event that the repair tool does not work OR IE 5 is not listed in the add remove programs tool in control panel. It instructed me to go to start and run and type this command as follows. rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt" I typed that a popup box appeared that said Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools. Under that were 3 option the first was add a component and the second was Repair IE and the third was restore previous Windows Configuration. BUT GUESS WHAT the ONLY BOX CHECKED was ADD a Component .THE OTHER 2 BOXES were grayed out??? and could not be chosen. What can I do now. There has t... Read more
