T480 TDP throttle

Q: T480 TDP throttle

Hi,Recently bought a T480 with the 150MX Nvidia card. The laptop works great during normal operation during work etc but when I get home and want to play some games, nothing is working as it should. What happens is this:When I start the game everything is running good but after a few minutes I can see my CPU start to lower it's power limit (PL1) slowly towards 5W. It will stop at 5W never gaining any wattage back until i restart computer. The PL1 is at 15W when computer is newly booted. I have tried to uninstall the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework, this results in that the processor is fixed at 15W but after a while the iGPU will go crazy and goes to 100% leaving the CPU at 2W = 0.2Ghz. And I have to restart. So this is not a valid solution. All my power settings are on maximum performance ofc.I have tried almost everything I can think of and been browsing all kind of reddit threads without any long term solution.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi;

I have been using this SW game from Microsoft for 5 months without any problems but today I wanted to play it and when I tried to apply "full power (100%)"; it works but after 2 seconds; the power got back to 15%. It means that I can not take off.
I'm using the jostick from Microsof (Forced Feedback 2).

In order to discover what was the core of the problem I did the following:

1.- I uninstall the game and re-install it but this did not fix the issue.

2.- From the properties of my jostick forced feedback 2 I tested all buttoms and all of them worked fine. I tested the throttle stick and it work ok.....

3.- I tried to ply the game with the keyboard but when I push the 9 button; I got 100% of full power but after 2 seconds it got back to 15%.

Any suggestioms to discover the core of my problem and to fix it?
Best Regards.

My school recently limited the badwidth available for file sharing with individuals outside of our lan. We have a T3 but it operates only a little faster than a 56k modem would. Is there any way around this specifically when using DC++. I tried switching the port that is used to 80 (which i believe is the port for http) from its default but that didn't help. Is there anything i can do

Sorry but trying to help you would be like helping someone hack.

Ok quick question.

I run XP Pro and I'm looking for a way to slow down outbound traffic on a p2p program while I play a game and then bring it back up when I come back so I don't lose my slot. Is there a way to throttle a single port or a range of ports in a windows operating system?

Tekka

A:Port Throttle

You would be better off to just shut down the P2P program while you play your games. P2P sucks your resources, wich you need while playing a game.

Just a little story to report the support guys.  There's definitively something wrong with the Lenovo Power Management driver (preinstalled for Windows 8.1) on T550:Yesterday, my new T550 delivered and couldn't wait to work with it, started out of the box...After installing Chrome, the performance of the new T550 I started to notice, was not as smooth as I expected but in the contrary, sometimes it works smooth, sometimes choppy as hell.  As I also possess a T440s (With windows 7), which was in fact the reason purchasing this T550 'coz it's a great machine.Symptoms: sudden erradic mouse movement (without stressing the cpu whatsoever), slow copy and installation, slow browsing, slow experience in general...  It was as if I worked on battery power with the lowest settings.  Checked power settings (highest as possible), everything ok but still the same.  Until I noticed with CPU-Z that even WITH the correct settings, the Core speed stil jumped down to about 700Mhz instead of around 2600 Mhz...?Out of desparation before that, I blaimed Windows 8 (I hate this version )  So I Acronis'ed the Win8 and installed Win7 instead... and seems the 7 works perfectly, finally!!  Speedy, responsive, similar to my T440s.Comforted, knowing that there was nothing wrong with the laptop itself, I started to suspect there might maybe some weird things going on with the Windows 8.1 it's Power management.. So rolled back (... I have a Core i5 750.
MSI GD65 motherboard.

In windows my power settings are at default.
When in balanced mode my cpu doesn't throttle down.
CPU-z shows that the multiplier is around 20-23 en core clock 3Ghz.

I looked at the individual settings Processor management is as follows min CPU at 5% / max CPU 100%

But is doesn't throttle down.

When I switch power plan to max Power saving it does clock down to multiplier x9 (core 1,2Ghz). But I notice that it doesn't throttle to full power when under load.

Anyone any suggestions?

Hey everyone! I got this lenovo y50-70 laptop about 1-1,5 years ago. Now I am facing a few serious problems with it. Problem 1: The cpu is acting exactly the opposite of how it should be. While browsing or just doing whatever not highly consuming process, the CPU is finely working around 3.5 Ghz, operation voltage is at 1.068V. However, as soon as I start building, or do anything that would need any more power, suddenly I see that my cores drop to 2.6Ghz and voltage is as low as 0.78V.This made me curious, and started testing with prime95, cpuz, Intel Xtreme tuning utility and so on. Each of them showed the exact same result, that as soon as the CPU should perform, it drops down to 2.6Ghz, while the temps are more than fine. None of the cores are above 65 degrees Celsius! This is not a simply bothering problem, but a serious one also. Software and tools used to track and monitor information regarding system health: HWInfo64, Intel XTU, Aida64 and CPU-Z. Problem 2: The laptop is slow, like way too slow. For your CPU issue, for a test, try setting your power plan to high performance and/or go into your BIOS and disable speedstep. Either one of these will force your laptop's cpu to maintain a constant maximum speed. This may also fix your BSOD issue as well but no guarantees. I bought my P52 as soon as it was released. When it arrived I noticed it was aggressively using the fans to cool itself, but only after installing a monitoring tool did I come to see that the CPU would jump almost immediately to 97/98C whenever the laptop was under any significant load (20-25%). When idle, temps hover between 60-70C. Is this normal? Is there a way I can contact Lenovo to see if there's an issue?

As I have heard from many people about the P71 and other P51 threads, this is a common problem with this generation of thinkpads. I have yet to contact Lenovo and have severe doubts in them. A mobile workstation with the cost of 3k or more should never have throttling issues. My model has base CPU and GPU and still experience high temperatures of over 100 degrees with significant throttling, how should I expect the functionality of a better CPU? This problem is absolutly unacceptable as Thinkpads are in fact quite bulky compared to the thin and lights and cooling should always be a serious consideration as the money spent on the hardware should be properly usable and not wasted on the specs sheet. Recent Lenovo products have been experiencing similar thermal issues very frequently and I find this a disgrace to the legendary build quality from the IBM days. What should I do about my thermal issue? Does Lenovo actually fix this problem? How long should I expect this to take?

In an AWARD BIOS Power Management Setup Menu there is an entry: Throttle Duty Cycle-62.5%. The manual does not explain this feature.

Anyone know what this entry accomplishes, and the + or - of having such?

It has something to do with your doze/suspend mode and processor cycles. Default is 62.5, I see no reason to mess with it. It just slows the processor down when it's not needed.

Hello all,

I'm having an issue with the internet speed on my desktop computer that runs Windows is going much slower (as measured by FTP downloads) than my Mac laptop.

Both are wireless. When I download a large file, the mac computer will routinely go significantly faster (4-5x) what the Windows computer will do. The Windows computer seems to have a cap at about 200-250kbytes/sec.

Now, I just reinstalled my O/S and so I'm on a clean reinstall of Windows, and it's *still* happening, and I'm puzzled.

A few things I think it might be:

- My Macbook wireless is integrated, whereas the Windows wireless is through a Belkin F5D9050 USB connector ("Wireless G Plus MIMO")
- Perhaps there's a limiting issue on the Windows motherboard?
- Maybe something limiting within the Windows firewall or registry settings.

Any suggestions to fix this?

Thanks!

Jack

I don't know, so take my comments with a grain of salt until someone else replies..

Try switching the wireless channel on the router.. For an N router (perhaps others) there are typically 11 channels. Try 1 or 11, something on the ends.

Does your windows machine have a better transfer if you bring it really close to the router?

Ok I have the ABIT kv7-v. My processor does not drop below 42C with 2 front fans at 2400 rpm... 2 rear fans at 2800 and 1800 rpm and a side wall fan at 2500 rpm.

The heatsink is my second one and was recommended by a tech who said it kept his at 36C. It is a - Masscool Socket A and 370 CPU Cooling Fan up to AMD athlon XP 3400+ Copper Core. I just put in a Thermaltake Purepower that dropped the temp 5C, and kicks *** compared to the piece of junk that came with the case.

The tech also said my motherboard might be lieing to me about the temp of the CPU. I had to flash the mobo KV7-V BIOS for the 2900 XP.

Any chance this mobo is off a little on the temp of my CPU?

Speedfan 4.25 nums

Temp 1 = 33C I think it is the chipset
Temp 2 = 63C cpu 2900 XP
HDO = 34C harddrive
Temp1 = 39C Power supply

A:Athlon 2900 XP a little hot at 60-63C full throttle.

there's a chance that the motherboard's sensors are feeding you false information. it's also possible that you failed to properly mount the hsf assemply on the cpu die. this involves a sufficient drop of thermal compound and you firmly and squarely affixing the hsf. what cpu fan did you install?

Hi

I have recently upgraded to Wind 8 from Wind7. I experience CPU throttling whenever I run GPU intensive activities. For instance when running Crysis 3, I have a constant fps of around 40 and then after a few minutes there is a barely noticeable black screen flash after which my fps drops to around 4fps. On MSI afterburner my GPU usage stays constant at 99%, but my core clock, shader clock and memory clock drops significantly:
This is not due to temp. It stays constant at around 70. I have also tried changing the power options for the processor (Min Processor states). No change. I have also used throttlestop to disable the BD PROCHOT, EIST, C1E. Still no change.

Everything was fine on Wind 7. System specs:
P.s. I also have a Toshiba Dynadock usb 3.0 which underperforms w.r.t responsiveness. It uses Displaylink drivers. I have removed all the Dynadock's drivers and unplugged it. No change. I have also updated my Nvidia drivers. No change.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Hello all,

I have come to you with an issue, I think I have two possible solutions but I'd love to hear some collaboration from some of the greater minds out there.

My issue is that I am in private student accomodation, the second problem is there is 5 people in the house and the third problem is that we are with virgin media. (haha)

Okay, so onto the main problem.

This is my connection, as close to unused as possible at we sit at darks hours in the night. My first impressions, good down but weak up, especially when I'm in a house with 4 other people that like their iPad's, Smart phones, laptops and computers.

My connection when others are using it, sits between 1.6mb to about 5-7mb down, however my ping is pretty much into the hundreds, so technically the download isn't my primary issue, it seems that the Upload is what's being throttled big time, it was sitting around between 0.2-0.4.

Now my idea of what's happening would be that my roommates like many others like to use torrents but aren't educated to know that excessive uploading is both Illegal, pointless and more importantly devastating to the rest of the people using the network in the house.

My first idea is that I try and communicate with my roommates and ask that if they use torrents please limit the maximum upload to 20kb's and see how that works.

My second idea is that I purchase a QoS enabled router that I would be able to limit each person by mac/ip address and d... Read more

Hi all,

Just an FYI on this possible issue:

My CPU: Intel G2020 2.9 GHz dual core:

Running 8.0, CPU would throttle down to 1/2 speed or so (1.57GHz) during low activity periods.
Running 8.1, CPU now only throttles down to the about 2.73GHz or so during low activity periods.

That spike was generated when I took the screenshot.

I also am noticing a slight increase in background activity in 8.1 but not enough to be a real concern.

Anyway, just an FYI.

Hi matts6887,

Do you have any software running on the system which controls the fan speed. If yes then you can use the same to lower the speed of the fans.

Also, have you tried updating BIOS as it also controls the speed of the fan. What softwares are still running in the background when you leave the system locked. You should perform a clean boot and check:

Hello tenforums!

I have been having some really annoying performance problems after upgrading my laptop from win8 to win 10.
My laptop is a asus ux32vd, with an Intel i7-3517U cpu.(normal core speed: 1.7ghz, turbo: 2.4ghz)

CPU-Z is showing ~990mhz constantly, no matter how high load there is on the cpu, and what temperature it is(usually around 50-60C).

I just cant figure out what is going on, and why it keeps throttling. Everything is running really slow, chrome is slow, facebook is like a pain in the ass to scroll through. Tried resetting the power plans to default, that didnt work. sometimes it helps changing power plan, and the restarting, but its not consistent at all.

Anyone who know what it could be?

This is a five-button joystick, but only three of the buttons can have user-defined commands assigned to them, the two throttle buttons are pre-set.

Basically, the way the throttle buttons work normally is absolutely worthless for the only game I wanted the joystick for, so I was wondering if there is an alternative set of software which would let me change what those two buttons do, like you can for the other three.

Hi, I have a lenovo U41-70 with i75500U cpu.I notice an issue wuth the cpu speed when on battery. When the battery charge goes below 30% the cpu speed drop to 0.48GHz constantly.Cpu speed return to a normal behaviour as soon as I plug in.I saw this same issue on different posts and for different laptops but did not see a proper fix for it.As it seems to be a bios issue I upgraded the bios driver from BDCN28WW to BDCN71WW but it did not help. Also I run Lenovo system update and update al the drivers. I also checked the battery advanced setting but did not see anything related to the issue. Why Lenovo does not provide a solution for this issue? Does anybody found a solution for this? Thanks.

Hello, I've had the Lenovo Ideapad 720s 15IKB with an i5 7300hq and GTX 1050 TI Max-Q design for about a month now, and occasionally use it for gaming. The only game I really play is GTA V, and it runs well on high settings at 60FPS for about 5-10 minutes, and then the CPU power throttles and the game drops FPS down to around 45. I've measured this with ThrottleStop. Temperatures are very manageable according to MSI afterburner and Open Hardware Monitor, far away from thermal throttle (73C/165F on avg). It took me a while and some research to figure out that the CPU was power throttling. Is there anyway to fix this? As far as I can tell, the CPU boosts just fine to around 3.1 (I believe that's the max boost?) and then when it throttles after a couple minutes of gaming, it drops down to around 2.5 or less, and this kills the framerate. This pretty close to being a deal breaker for me (I know this laptop was not made for gaming necessarily, but considering the hardware it has, it should be more than capable). I'm just wondering if there is any fix to keep the laptop from throttling, or at least throttling as much as it does. I am ok with repasting the CPU and GPU if it means higher temps.

Issue: Happens on all games, (csgo as an example) I usually run 200-300 constant but it will randomly drop to 20-40 for about 20-30 seconds then return to normal. It only happens after the computer has been on for a specific amount of time. About maybe after 1 hour 30 mins it starts happening. After time passes it does it much more frequently. instead of doing it every 10 mins it will start doing it every 5 mins. pretty much making any game unplayable. The problem has been just getting worse lately, and started happening about a few months ago.

I've tried just about everything to analyze and fix the issue. Also please note I am also in the process of emailing Nvidia support to help solve the issue (also note Nvidia clearly has not found a resolution to this issue).

What I've tried:

-System Restore
-System Recovery
-Uninstall all Nvidia drivers + Reinstall (using DDU)
-Fresh install Nvidia drivers
-Defrag
-Debug mode (Nvidia option to disable factory OC, option on Nvidia control panel)
-Reseated GPU
-Physically cleaned computer (Dust)
-Change refresh rate and resolution
-Updated BIOS
-Updated all drivers
-Set power management mode to prefer maximum performance (Nvidia control panel)
-Rolled back drivers
Probably more too, I can't remember since its been so long since my PC worked correctly.

What the issue isn't:

-Temperature (I've checked during gameplay, My temperatures do not exceed normal temperatures while playing.)
-Mostly likely not CP... Read more

In my first post i posted about y700ACZ throttle. it was very serious throttle from 3.4ghz to 1.3ghz while playing games. To FIX this follow my words. 1.Its not the gpu or the apu that is throttling nor any other hardware flaw. 2.Its the AIR intake vent. TO [email protected] remove the hood and look upside down there you will see a cloth like fiber cloth covering the vent THATS the main reason of throttling. 3.remove the cloth carefully leave it open and run any of your game.look  at the cpu in task manager 4. i played assassin creed syndicate for 1 hour and was no throttle even the gpu temperature was @60-65c 5.there are some lag in games though which is barely seen but what i think is its bcuz of 15w TDP !! but thats ok not an issue 6.ALSO I RUN HEAVEN BENCHMARK AND @EXTREME SETTINGS I GOT MIN 20FPS AND MAX 45FPS 7.BUT FIRST OF ALL DO CLEAN THE FANS AND ALL OTHER PARTS. SO CONCLUSION THE MAIN CAUSE IS THE DESIGN FLAW AND ITS LENOVO'S FAULT NOT AMD SO AMD !!ROCKS!! SUPERB HARDWARE. CASE CLOSED.........

If this is true, you should be able to achieve a similar effect if you use one of the laptop cooling pads, if you don't want to bother with removing the air filter.

Hey everybody, this is for all of you that bought the Lenovo Y700 15ACZ gaming laptop with Amd FX 8800P processor and are having an issue with the CPU throttling.  I bought this laptop a little over a month ago, and right out of the box, it didn't perform as it should.  It throttled down from the full 3.4ghz to 1.3, and I encountered a huge drop in my framerate while gaming.  I would start a game like Battlefield 4 or Farcry 3 and have pretty good framerates for a laptop, something around 35-40, but after playing for a while I would see my frames go down in the teens.  I knew there had to be a problem, and a solution.  I've done a ton of research on it from the time I got it until now, and I finally have the answer, thanks to numerous posts on the Lenovo community.  It takes quite a few alterations, but it helps, I promise. First, you need to make sure that all of your settings are set to High Performance.  Do this by going into your Radeon Settings and clicking Preferences on the bottom.  Click Radeon Additional Settings and in the Catalyst Control Center make sure that anything you can change to performance is set to that.  High Performance is what you want, so when you open a game it will switch over to your dedicated GPU, which in this case is a Radeon R9 M385X.  One other thing I noticed is that Catalyst Control Center takes up roughly a steady 30% of your CPU us...  (The second picture is from wowpaladin user. Thank you to the user who gave me the information.) I once raised the same question, and now I've found additional information, and I'm writing again to understand the behavior of more users. In a T490 environment, the CPU's available power drops dramatically to 6W when the MX250 (GPU) is loaded. The first picture is a CPU+GPU load situation, but the second one shows the same thing even though only the GPU is working. In this situation, CPU operation becomes very limited and the overall system performance is very slow.I'm feeling this is not normal. It seems that the bug in the system is causing this serious restriction, but this problem is still being left alone.Although Bios version 1.52 said they fixed the problem, these symptoms are reproduced.I am waiting for information from more users who have chosen GPU option in T490 but I think they will all have the same symptoms in the current situation.I don't want to use a laptop with this limitation as an ideal type.If more users provide information, it will help us solve this problem.

Problem:CPU seems to be reaching temps of 80-100deg C while gaming (Rocket League, Siege, Risk of Rain 2).Intelligent Cooling is off. Power settings set to max performance. I have tried setting the settings to lowest possible and the problem still persists. I get a few minutes of normal gameplay and then temps spike and CPU (I presume) throttles itself and the performance spikes, lowering framerate and overall performance. GPU temps stay around 60-70deg C. I have tried Intel XTU but it won't install (Intel Customer Support says it's meant for desktops?) I have also tried to figure out a way to manually change fan speeds, but no matter what settings and software I try it doesn't seem to be available. I'm also running the latest BIOS. Specs:Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home(10.0.18362 Build 18362)Physical Memory (Installed): 8 GBProcessor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8565U CPU @ 1.80GHzDisplay Adapter(s): Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 25.20.100.6793                                      NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 26.21.14.3160Disk(s): SAMSUNG MZVLB256HAHQ-000L2 150.95 GB (available) 10.0.18362.1

When i run cinebench multithread, my flex 5 with the i5 8th gen would throttle to 100% and like about 2.3ghz for a few sec.  then it actually throttle down and maintain only 88% and 1.6ghz, which is below the base speed that is indicated in win10 task manager.  I don't know if that's expected for the flex 5 1470 specifically. On my 720-14ikb, with the same i5 8th gen cpu, it would maintain 100% and stay at the base speed of 1.8ghz all the way through.

A:Need help confirming if something is wrong with my flex 5- 1470 cpu throttle or if it's by design

Here's what it looks like when i run throttlestop... So is this just a case of aggresive backthrottle by lenovo?  Much appreciated if someone else with flex 5 1470 can see if they experience the same thing

Hi, Friends,

i am playing NFS shift, Race driver GRID all these games are having the same problem. When i press left OR right key to turn the throttle drops and i have to press UP arrow key again to accelerate. I have altered upto every possible configuration in the game controls options but not positive result :-( please help because this really sucks.
Regards.

A:Keyboard issue:-Throttle drops/disengage when i steer left OR right

Using a keyboard with racing sims generally means that you only have on/off control of inputs like throttle,
brake and steering. Press the up key, and the throttle engages at full, release the key and the throttle
disengages. Same with braking and steering, either all or none. You may be able to set a 'soft' response,
where the input slowly increases to full, but it will still return to zero input when you release the key.
The only way around it is to get a gamepad with thumbsticks or a wheel and pedal set.
