Navigation Arrows in explorer.exe are suddenly dysfunctional.

Q: Navigation Arrows in explorer.exe are suddenly dysfunctional.

This is such an pathetically simple way to display the navigation buttons in explorer.exe, but I can't seem to get it right. Oddest of all, this "problem" only appeared today and no new software installed. I HAVE made changes to the "tools" & "views" in an open folder with one or many subfolders, but reset them as they've always been. Any ideas on how to change this annoyance?? I've uploaded two captured images. One is of the far left side of the screen; only "Control" and "CmdPrompt" are true, simple links for the two most used .exe files. Every other shortcut opens either a single-pane window with .lnks to.exe or.msc item which are scattered all over, or it shows .lnks to subfolders. I know this is quirky, but I have always hated desktops covered with dozens of shortcuts (and I obviously detest the arrows shown by default). The icons shown are links to various places; the rest of my 42" monitor is clean.

Always, always, always, when going into nested folders, the navigation arrows on the top line have allowed to go back to previous level, etc. SUDDENLY, these arrows are grayed out and do nothing and am forced to close the window and restart explorer with the WinKey+E method.

ALSO, note the "My Pictures" icon appears empty (unlike Music and Videos); there and dozens of subfolders and humdreds of images within them. This, too, has always worked UNTIL today?!?

Extremely aggravating! What has happened, and how do I correct it?? OS is Windows 7 Ultimate (x64), i7 CPU & 4TB drive space (some from external SATA units).

Help, please!!

Preferred Solution: Navigation Arrows in explorer.exe are suddenly dysfunctional.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Kakite,

Since this has only started today, you could do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this happened to hopefully undo and fix this.

Hope this helps,

I just spent the last 4 days reformatting my previously-XP computer, installing Windows 7, and setting up all my programs just the way I like them, installing new drivers for the move to Win7, dealing with new problems of moving onto Win7, and so forth. The OS acted like an angel for the first 2-3 days, and now, suddenly, it's acting like a moron.

The '3 Stooges' of problems I'm experiencing very often while it's running is that it often likes to go slow/freeze/(Not Responding)/white window, or give me a totally black screen with just the mouse pointer, or it shows me nothing but the desktop background and the mouse pointer.

As for rebooting issues, I've seen it reboot my computer on its own before, as well as being unable to boot all the way to the OS.

Okay, so I was trying to add Breadcrumbs to my Windows XP laptop, and I made a stupid move and accidentally turned off the Styler interface (an app I'm using to get the Windows Vista/7 look). To use it, I had to turn off the default interface.

Everything was well until I decided to install Breadcrumbs. I made a stupid move and turned off Styler, the only toolbar remaining.

Now, I can't get the navigation interface back. I know the solution is likely simple, but I don't know how to do it.

I restored the Folder Options to the default, and I'm fumbling around in IE's settings right now, no luck so far.

Any help?

I've spent many years working in Windows XP or the equivalent (NT, 2000? Etc.). Absolutely cannot stand Vista but I'm trying to open my mind and accept Windows 7. It doesn't seem as cumbersome and buggy as Vista, but, in my opinion, all of these operating systems have gotten far too, "smart", (or maybe, paranoid is a better word) I much prefer, thin, trim and cryptic; as opposed to grandiose and presupposing. Anyway, I find myself using Windows Explorer a lot. Is there no up button anymore? I don't mean, "back", that is still there. I mean away to go up one directory level ? to the parent directory.

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

In Windows Explorer in the Desktop mode, there is a navigation pane on the left hand side. At the top, there is a spot for your favorite folders, so you can navigate directly to them easily. Below that are other sections, like "Homegroup" and "This PC." Whenever you open Windows Explorer, it automatically focuses on This PC in the navigation pane by default. Does anyone know of any way to get it to focus on Favorites by default, rather than This PC, without having to create a shortcut? I'd like it to do that even if I press Windows Key+E

I'm sure you've never heard this one before.

Any attempts to access folders or files, via explorer, is met with a popup message stating that my computer has been infected with trojans and gives me the option to download spyware removal software. blah blah blah. Can't close the window, can only click yes or no, both of which result in an attempt to access a webpage via whatever web browser I currently have set as the default, forcing me to close said browser before any further damage is done.

This occurs EVERY single time I attempt to navigate within explorer, and with 4 hard drives and about 1.5gb of information sorted among them, this is more than just slightly annoying. I've attached a HiJackThis log. Please help me out. My skills when it comes to the registry are significantly lacking.

Hello SevenForums, I am having a particularly annoying problem with my favorites shortcuts in my navigation pane. I have no idea what I actually did but I know I accidentally altered the "Links" file in C:/(Users)/(MyUser)/Links. Ever since then my "Favorites" shortcuts in the navigation pane are completely empty. I cannot add new links either.

I have tried everything from the simple "restore favorite links" option to manually editing the registry value to be sure in included the "IsShortcut" entry. I have tried the techniques from several different threads on this very website. I have tried every single option from each one of these tutorials:

Favorites Empty in Navigation Pane - Fix
Favorites - Restore Default Favorite Links in Navigation Pane
User Folders - Restore Default Location
Default File Type Associations - Restore

Nothing has fixed the problem.

In addition to this all the sections in the navigation pane that used to independent (IE - Libraries, Computer, Network, ETC) are all now contained under the "Desktop" category. This is a recent issue and not nearly as maddening as the favorites issue I described above.

So priority one for me is to fix the favorites links. If anyone can shed some light on the situation I would greatly appreciate it.

A:Windows Explorer Navigation Pane Problems

Hello brewersomething, and welcome to Seven Forums.

All of your default Favorites are there in the right pane when you have Favorites selected. It appears that you need to expand open Favorites in the navigation pane by clicking on the small white outlined triangle just to the left of Favorites.

It looks like you have your navigation pane set to "show all folders". Unchecking this option using the method in the tutorial below will have your navigation pane show in separate groups again.

Do you know which registry setting allows you to open the Links (Common Places FS Folder) explorer navigation pin as a drop down, as was the default behavior prior to the quick access pin being added in Win10?

For example, the Reg below will pin the Links folder back to the Explorer Nav Pane, however since the placeholders in the Links folder are shortcuts and not actual directories, no dropdown is able to be produced in the way that Windows 8 and backwards was able to.
Quick Access unfortunately doesn't offer the ability to rename anything pinned to it.
For example, I have a shortcut in the Links folder for both Start Menu locations (ProgramData and AppData), which I've renamed to differentiate between the two, however doing the same with Quick Access pins two folders named Start Menu as pinned placeholders... obviously a programmer missed that caveat of Quick Access.

What my plan is, is to remove Desktop from the Navigation Pane maybe using a Registry Hack but I think if it did, it would remove the others too since they expand from Desktop. I never use Desktop from Navigation Pane and just find it to be a nuisance to always have it collapsed and just remove it instead. Is there any method of doing this please?

Example below:

I have already removed Favourites and if I can get Desktop to be removed I will remove the Homegroup and Network from that too using Brink's already made Tutorials.

Maybe this has been discussed before, but I'm noticing that the navigation pane in Windows Explorer doesn't automatically scroll left and right anymore in the latest builds. Nor is there a horizontal scroll bar on that pane, like there was on XP. So if you have folders that are nested more than four or five deep, the only way to see the deeper levels is to drag that pane wider.

This is happening in both 7048 and 7057. Are others seeing this? Is this a bug or are they changing the way horizontal scrolling works and it's just not finished?

A:Windows Explorer Navigation Pane Autoscroll

I couldn't say about the navigation pane as I always disable all the extra windows options for the explorer windows. As for the horizontal scroll - if I understand you correctly, that is still there but you have to scale the window horizontally until there is less than one tiles worth of space. Otherwise the icons just auto tile themselves.

Since I navigate to other drives much more often than I use Libraries, I'd like to put Computer at the top. However attempts to drag & drop to change positions produce no joy.

Is there a way I can remove then restore to change the order? Or maybe edit the Registry to shift the order? To me Homegroup should be way at the bottom and Computer should be at the top.

Hi all,

I've had some problems in the last few days with Windows Explorer. Windows Explorer decides to freeze (often causing me to hard-reset, though not all the time) whenever I right-click on an icon on my desktop or when I browse the programs via the Start Menu. I've also experienced problems trying to browse my files and folders. When it does work, it takes an age to load.

When the computer doesn't crash I'm able to use Task Manager to reload Explorer.exe

I've run various diagnostic/repairing methods, listed below, which haven't worked so far.
1) CHKDSK utility via command line in admin (reported no errors)
2) sfc /scannow via command line in admin (reported no errors)
3) "HDDScan" (no errors with C drive)
4) System Restore to a previous restore point

There's something really annoying with navigation in Windows Explorer. Say I'm in a folder with three files called "Apple," "Banana," and "Orange." When I type an A, it takes me to "Apple." So far so good. But say I want to go the file "Banana" and I accidentally type a C instead of a B. Explorer then sounds off a "ting." It's OK so far, but what is really annoying is the amount of time I have to wait to type a B again, because if I do so before a couple seconds have elapsed, Explorer assumes I want to go to a file whose name begins with "cb...," sounding off more "tings." So my question is: how can I decrease the amount of time that must pass before I can select other files beginning with other letters?

I just installed internet explorer 9 and now my start navigation sound doesn't work. I went to sounds and the start navigation sound is enabled and plays just fine when I preview it. I have the X-FI sound card and sound enhancements is disabled also. I had to have that disabled for it to work with ie8, but now nothing I do will make it work, and I want it.

I have this dark horizontal line that appears in windows explorer every time I'm in a window, It appears right at the bottom of the navigation bar, its not glaring though, just that its distracting and every time I hover around it, I See the "move" cursor which doesn't do anything. How do I get rid of this line please? It was never there as at the last time I restarted my PC.

For now, do you have the latest video driver installed?

Does refreshing (F5) or jiggling the window help any?

Another (similar) question in case you know the answer or have time to have a look at it. I moved my OneDrive folder to my E:\ drive on Surface Pro. A OneDrive icon has now appeared at the top of my FE navigation pane, which I would like to remove or hide. I have tried a few regedits but no success. I posted separately on this at http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/o...=1463225945905

Some useful answers, but haven't cracked it yet. Sorry to trouble you with it, but your knowledge of the W10 registry seems to be unparalelled.

I do not want to see a large space to the right of my photos & files in file explorer. I want to see the full space filled with them. I have been searching for hours for the mythical "General Tab" which supposedly contains the key but it doesn't seem to exist. Does anyone know if this display is possible?

In Vista, the Favorites in the left-hand navigation pane of explorer is a separate menu that always remains at the top left, even when you scroll the other items in the list. In Windows 7 when you scroll through items on the left, the Favorites section scrolls up and out of view. I want my Favorites to be "pinned" or "locked" at the top of the navigation pane as they can be in Vista. Is this possible in Windows 7?

A:stationary favorites in Explorer navigation pane, like in Vista

I too am really in need of this feature, as it was a one of the features I liked in Vista. Is there any way to enable it in Windows 7? I just started using Windows 7 and this was one of the first feature I missed.

Is there a way to increase the size of the drive and/or folder icons in the navigation pane of Windows Explorer? It's easy to change the icon size in the folder pane or on the desktop, but these changes don't seem to affect the icons in the navigation pane of Explorer.

I'm running Windows7 x64 Home Premium. I have tried both Windows 7 Basic and Windows Classic themes and neither seems to allow this customization.

The system uses the 16 x 16 icons for the Explorer navigation pane.
Changing this is not an option.

I want to change the icon order in windows explorer navigation pane. By default you have Library, Homegroup, Computer and Network, in that order (there is also favorites but I removed it and I don't remember now where it is placed exactly).

I want to change the order to: Computer, Library, Homegroup, Network.
The folowing image show it:
(Blue line: move Library down. Red line: place Computer where Library was)

In windows XP there was a program called TweakXP by Microsoft that allowed to do this but I couldn't find one for windows 8.

Is there a way to achieve this?
Thanks.

If you can find Favorites & replace it, you can put shortcuts to what you want in it by dragging & dropping them.(In the order you want them)

There are several articles on how to remove existing features/groups from the Windows Explorer navigation pane. Is it possible to add a new folder or shortcut to the navigation pane either by editing the registry to create a new navigation pane entry or to change what a current feature, say favorites, actually points to (in this case C:\Users\user-name\Links)?

Hello Mulsiphix,

I'm not sure about that, but you can add them to Favorites in the Windows Explorer Navigation Pane for easy use. The tutorial below can help show you more on this. It's the same in Windows 7 as Vista.

Hi guys. The screenshot below shows that I've gotten rid of the letters for all the drives, partitions, but in the Libraries menu each item is followed by the drive letter where it is installed. Is there a way to get rid of that? This only happened after I removed the default links in the Libraries that pointed to My Music and such...

Thanks.

Hello Marcus, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you do not want anything in the Navigation Pane, you could just turn off the Navigation Pane instead to not have it there. It's pretty much useless without anything in it anyways.
