Can't copy files on Pendrives, SD cards

Q: Can't copy files on Pendrives, SD cards

Hi All,

I have an issue with my machine: I can't copy any files on pendrives or SD cards, unless I'll run Windows in Safe mode, everything works OK (all the pendrives or SD cards are working fine).

Tried to fix dll's, scanned for Virus even managed to format one pendrive (thought it was broken at first) but still couldn't copy any files.

The error I am getting: You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this folder.

I don't even have to mention that I am administrator?

Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I copied 175GB of files to a different disk. But some would not copy and it said path too long. But how do I know which one they were. All it said was do I want to skip, not skip xyz file. So I deleted them all from the second disk and want to start again

I have no idea about this one and it's driving me crazy...

When trying to copy to an SD card on my computer (the SD reader came preinstalled on my laptop) it takes upwards of 10-15 minutes to copy what is only about 3.x MB of information.

However, transferring the same information to the same card from the same computer only using various Linux distributions takes only about 5 seconds.

What is going on? Why is windows taking so long to transfer these files? Any insight would be fantastic!

How many of you use pendrives? (USB flash memories?)
I'm looking forward to buy one cause I really need it due to my work, I've been using an SD card with a pocket SD card reader but it doens't work anymore.

So, any suggestions regarding brands?
I hear kingston and sandisk are good ones, I don;'t want to buy a ****** pendriver cause they say they go blank if it;s too hot or go erase all your data after a while.

Ok, your turn now! thanks people!

Experiencing the same problem than

looks like the issue is in the pendrive itself. I have two PNY pendrives, one 8GB and another 16GB. I can use YUMI or any other app to add a distro to the pendrive, format them, etc, but when booting the BIOS does not recognize them.

Tried in an old X31 laptop and in a new HP ProBook laptop with same (bad) result.

I though it was because of the big size but many people use 16GB pendrives for these purposes...

(BTW, tried also formating them and the distros were way smaller than 4gb...)

A:how to recover data from formatted pendrives

If you want to recover the data from formatted drive, you need
special software and competencies. When you delete or even format a disk, the files aren?t really deleted, they are marked to be overwritten.

Since there?s no such software from Microsoft, you need search it yourself. Also please note third party may cause unexpected issue.

Greetings !
I apparently have some sort of shortcut virus on my pendrives. I used one on a public computer and when I reconnected that pendrive to my home laptop, all I coul see were shortcuts of the .ink kind. And when I double clicked on one it would open the cmd window and give me an error that microsoft.vbs couldn't be found. Later I connected another pendrive (one without the virus) and everything got converted ionto shortcuts again. I unchewcked the "hide essential windows files option" in folder options, so I am able to see my files on the pendrive along with the shortcuts. Both avg and malwarebytes have failed to solve this problem.my harddrives seem unaffected. Any help will be appreciated thanks !

reformat the pendrives.
my computer>rightclick on offending pen drive>format>fat32 quick format.
will erase EVERYTHING from the drives.
I suggest you do an advanced malware scan with something like ESET online scanner though, just to be sure you don't have nasties carried across.

I use two notebooks. One running Win8.1 PRO (64bits), the other Win7 Home Premium (32bits).
I also have an external HD, and three pen-drives I use with both notebooks, as needed.
Some programs I use (a password manager, bkups, between many others) save data on these drives, and I need that the drive letters attributed to them DO NOT CHANGE no matter the notebooks they are connected to.
My problem is that the letters given to these drives keep changing when they are used on the notebooks and the programs can't find the paths to store or retrieve data from.
How can I make the drive letters to remain the same no matter the notebook they are being used with?
To choose the drive letters I use the Control Panel "Administrative Tools<>Computer Management<>Disk Management"

Any help will be welcome.

Cheers, and a Happy Holiday Season.

Hi all! Not something that hinders my daily life but why Windows7 forgets about the name of the renamed pendrives and external drives? I give them names so that I can know their content without opening them such as
"Films" or "Pix" or "Softwares". They were fine like this during a year or more and now from one day to the other everything lost its name and became E:, F: etc. Notably, these peripherals are connected the same way: the same cable to the same USB port. I re-renamed them again yesterday but they went back to E:, F: once again. That is so stupid.

A:Windows7 forgets the name of external drivers/ pendrives

Hello akofalvi,

This normally happens when other drives/applications starts to reserve specific drive letters/path. For instance Daemon Tools (Which mounts installation images) could reserve drive letters G-H, and thus causing your other ones to change letters and therefor loose any name given.

You should try to set them to something way back in the dictionary, like Z-X:

Go to Start > Search.
Type "diskmgmt.msc" > Hit Enter.
Rightclick your drives > Change drive letters/path.

This is what I do when I suffer these types of problem, which is often by the way, and I have not found a correct way of fixing so it is temporarily at best.

I go to Device Manager, then to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and I start uninstalling the Generic USB Hubs and then the other hubs, hoping not to nuke my mouse, if I don't then I go to the Action Tab and click on Scan for Hardware changes and it will rearrange the usb drivers and IRQs in hopes that they do not clash with each other. If it does nuke the mouse then I manually restart the PC and hope that it will solve the issue once I am back at the desktop.

There is no damage done to the PC, at least I have not seen any real damage but until I find a better way, this is what I have to deal with.

First time on this forum, so I hope I chose the right category to post my problem. I just got a new laptop, and it has Vista Home Premium.

My problem.. I use a program/application called "DVArchive" (aka: DVA) for archiving my tv shows on my PC (from my ReplayTV). This application worked just fine on XP, but of course, Vista is giving me all kinds of crap.

The application IS working.. It can see my ReplayTV unit, I can access my archived shows, etc. However, Vista is giving me error messages, which are interfering with it and making it crash.

The problem has to do specifically with the applications configuration (.XML) files. I'm pretty tech saavy, but I'm not a computer expert, so I'll just cut and paste the actual error messages below. The listed pathways are where DVArchive stores it's files...

I cannot move or copy files, folders, or pictures when using the XP files & folders task manager LINKS on the left side of window. These links will no longer move or copy files to new locations. I just get instant hangup when I click these links provided in XP view. When I try to close the hungup window it shows that it is not responding. I find no alerts in control panel/administrative tools/event viewer.

I've been using Teracopy since Win7 and when it encounters file conflicts, it gives you the option to overwrite older files automatically or with the press of a button. The Win 8 copy dialog allows you to compare files and skip those with the same date and size. There is copy and replace option but I do not see one to replace if file is newer or skip if file is older
1) Is there an option similar to the Overwrite older or do you just have to compare files individually?
2) When it says same "date" does it just mean the day or is the time accounted for as well for example if I had a file that was updated a few hours after the original, but on the same day, would it recognize that as a difference?

PS: Has anyone done a side-by-side comparison of Win 8 copy vs Teracopy?

A:Copy Files Conflict: Overwrite Older Files ala Teracopy

In Teracopy, when it detects one or more dupe files that are in the destination, a dialogue box will pop up giving you a choice to either copy over or rename and for a single instance or multiple instances. I usually tell it to "Skip All". It checks the files for Names and Sizes, and if a file is exactly the same in name and size and date, usually Teracopy skips it by default. This is because you can resume a huge copy process started in Teracopy if it gets interrupted: You can resume such a copy process by just dragging the whole folder over the half-copied destination, then Teracopy checks all the files and blanks out the ones that are already copied.

In the case of what you showed up in your pic, I think Teracopy may have skipped that file by default, only copying the ones that are not already there. But if it gives you a dialog box, just choose "Skip All". I'll have to check it's behaviour.

Teracopy is better for copying a folder with a bunch of sub folders from one drive to another. I use it to copy a Data Set that's about 500 GB in size: Working with a file set of that size, Teracopy is the best way to do it. If you want to not use Teracopy for local copying of a few files, right click on the folder to be copied and drag it over to the destination. then release the mouse and in the selection popup, choose "Copy" and not Teracopy. There will also be a "Move" and Teramove selection as well.

By default, Teracopy takes over the re... Read more

Hello! Thanks for looking into this thread.

To make a long story short, I have a new HDD with not much on it, and I have an old HDD with all my other stuff on it. :)

Some of that stuff is located in the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder. Game saves on online gaming sites such as Armorgames.com etc.

It allowed me to copy from the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder onto a USB easily and without trouble. Whereas when I put my USB on the other computer, and try to copy them onto the Temp Internet Files folder of my new HDD, it just does not give me the option to.

I've looked into this a bit, and have discovered that there is no physical folder. I've gone to where I am supposed to, the Document Settings -> Local Settings ect. and it's not there. I guess that's the technical reason why it won't let me copy files to there, because there is no physical folder.

What I am asking is: Is there a way to copy files 'TO' the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder?

I emphasise the 'TO' as I've only seen information on google in regards to copying files 'FROM' the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder.

I hope you folks can help me out on this one. :)

A:Copy files 'TO' the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder

It is not that easy as IE stores TEMP file is multiple locations.

2. I attached my SanDisk card reader to my computer.

Hi everyone!

I recently purchased a 160g SATA HD for my new PC to replace my old 40g EIDE HD. And I was wondering if it's possible to copy my OS(winXP) and files exactly to the SATA HD; I really want to avoid installing my OS.
It seems impossible or not recommended from what i've read, but maybe it's more safe. If it's not possible, I had some thoughts come up to mind.

Is it possible to make the SATA HD a master and have the old EIDE HD a slave so I can boot up windows from my slave?
(this is probably a no) can a SATA HD preform a slave under a EIDE Master? This way I can use the EIDE as... a slave.

Now, I don't mind installing XP again, it's just long and I have other programs to re-install, that's why I want to avoid this. I have some important files, but i'm sure I can make my EIDE HD a slave and just copy from there once i've installed windows onto my new HD.

Any help, suggestions, or a clear blunt answer will help.

Thanks in advance, cheers~

I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem we're having at work. One of our photographers keeps losing the first photo on her CF card. When I put the card into a reader Windows asks if I'd like to repair the file system. I always say no and then use some software to recover the image but it keeps happening. It's happened twice this week already!

She's shooting with a Canon 50D and SanDisk Ultra 4GB cards. It's not the card itself that has a problem because every time it's happened I've pulled the offending card out of service.

Could it be the card reader that's somehow corrupting the image and the card? Is it her camera? She formats her cards every time she starts a new project and it's always just the first photo on the card that becomes corrupt. But, recovery of the first image is generally sucessful using SanDisk Rescue Pro.

Anyone seen this before or have any ideas?

My desktop PC has a problem with it's USB ports which can be summed up as follows:

* General devices (mice, printers etc) run fine
* My Camera's (when directly connected), USB memory stick & Card reader work fine when connected to my laptop.
* The same devices when attached to the desktop machine connect OK and appear fine when connected and browsing directories etc.
* As soon as I copy (significant fast data transfer) from the same devices the "port" hangs. There is no apparent disconnection but the transfer fails with a "could not find this item" error and if I then browse the device it tells me there are no files or directories contained within it.
* A physical disconnect & reconnect gets me back to an apparantly OK connected device.
* USB drivers & BIOS up to date.
* USB ports deleted and recreated in device manager.
* Running Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP2 - all updates installed.

Any thoughts? Would a firewire card & reader have the same problem? With a Canon 5dII generating huge files, having to copy everything to my laptop and use the wireless network to move the files to the desktop is a right pain in the backside.

All help gratefully received.

Hi guys,

New to the forum so thank you in advance for any light you can shed on my problem.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L655-1EM laptop running windows 7 home premium 64bit. OEM came pre-installed. I've had the laptop about 6 months.

It works great but I seem to get the BSOD quite a lot. I noticed it only seems to happens when I'm using either of my external hard drives or SD cards. Usually when I am transferring a batch of large files between drives.

Any help you can offer in solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

A:BSOD when transferring files from memory cards or external hard drives

Hello, Mark080.

First, welcome to Windows Seven Forums !

Second. On this moment, I will try with reinstalling drivers for card reader.
That drivers is free and you can download from Toshiba web site.

Maybe, you installed wrong drivers, not for your lapotop. You need exactly driver for your model of laptop.

Go here and download new : Download Windows 7 drivers:

Then uinstall old drivers and restart computer :
1. Open Start Menu.
2. Right click on Computer.
3. Click on Properties.
4. Open Task Manager (You need administrator privileges to edit drivers)
5. Find your drivers and delete it.
6. Close all windows, save your work, and restart your computer.

Then :
1. Run installation.
2. Restart computer again.

I think that should work.

G'day everyone

How can I get Windows 7 to name copied files using the scheme "Copy of" (used in Windows XP and earlier) instead of the default scheme "- Copy", whenever a file is copied to the same directory as the original file?

In other words, if you copy a file named "Foo.txt" in a directory to the same directory, Windows XP would have named that file "Copy of Foo.txt", but Windows 7 names the file "Foo - Copy.txt". I want the copy to be named "Copy of Foo.txt".

There are several reasons why I prefer the XP style file name:

1. It is familiar :-)

2. I have existing files that use the XP style file names, and I want all my file copies to use the same naming scheme. I guess I can do a massive file rename across all my backups, but that would solve only one of my problems.

3. Most of my folders are sorted by name, and using XP style would sort all copies together. On other forums it has been suggested that one can simply sort by date (to get the copies sorted together), but that advice assumes that all copies are created after all other files are created, which is actually not often the case.

4. I often work with long file names, which means that the end of the file name is often obscured, unless I have wide windows (not always possible) and use lots of horizontal scrolling every time I want to select a file. Hovering over a file to get its full name is a cumbersome solution.

A:Have copied files named "Copy of" instead of "- Copy" (aka XP style)

I found one partial solution (fairly good):

With Supercopier, use Ctrl + click/drag to copy files.

SuperCopier Website

In Supercopier's Confuguration settings, go to "Copies & moves behaviour", and in "Old file renaming pattern" type "<full>" and in "New file renaming pattern" type "Copy of <full>".

If you use just right-click and drag to make file copies, the context menu will give you the option to use Supercopier, but the default option is Windows' own copying.

However, if you use Ctrl + click/drag, it uses Supercopier to copy, and the copy is named according to your preference. If a file is copied using Ctrl + click/drag to another directory, the renaming pattern is not used -- the customised renaming is used only on files copied to the same directory.

I recently woke up and found that my computer (newer Dell XPS 410, windows XP media center) was displaying the "blue screen." The blue screen appeared almost immediately after each the windows logo displayed upon each restart. It told me to run CHKDSK. I figured out how to boot from the CD and ran CHKDSK. After that, I was able to start Windows, but it is riddled with problems.

I haven't had much time to discover them all, but here are the main ones I found:

1) Internet Explorer will not open - when trying to open, the screen flashes but then - nothing.

2) Picture files will not open.

3) I cannot paste files - I am given the option to copy or cut, but they will not paste anywhere. I want this feature above all else so I can back up some files before I nuke the hard drive for a full reinstallation.

4) Word files open but I receive an error message saying something about not being able to register the files or something like that.

5) All virus software and firewalls were disabled upon bootup, and I can't enable them.

I am sure there are more, but if this rings any bells I would appreciate the help. I was running PC Cillin anti-virus and firewalls - the whole package, and I always kept it updated. Just in case that helps...

Any help would be appreciated. (Otherwise it is TAPS!)

A:DOS- ?copy files

Sorry the "freezer trick" did not work.

How are you getting to DOS? Are you booting from a DOS boot disk, using the command prompt in Windows or the utility disk?

You will have to try and burn another cd. Pick any cd with documents or whatever on it and see if you can copy that.

Is it WindowsXP built in burning program you're using ?

What does 'cyclic redundancy check error' mean?

There are plenty of technical resources on the Web that discuss cyclic redundancy checks (CRCs). Most times you won't need to worry about this technobabble. That is, until one it day it suddenly appears and you think - what the hell does that mean? In simple terms, a CRC is bit of mathematics used to ensure that your data is OK when being transfered. It's a checking procedure that quickly identifies when data has been damaged. If you get this message, it means that the file being read by your PC or software is corrupted. However, it does not mean all the data is lost forever. When data is transfered, it is usually in small blocks and each block is given a CRC value. If something goes wrong with the data between the time it leaves the source and arrives at its destination, the CRC sent at the source will no longer match the one that is calculated when the data arrives - this is when the cyclic redundancy check error will appear.
The most common times you will see the cyclic redundancy check error message is when trying to read data from a damaged CD or DVD. Just before it appears, your CD/DVD drive will probably grind and whirl away - your PC may also become a little slugglish.

Less frequent causes are the result of system crashes, and buggy software (hello Microsoft), in... Read more

I need to transfer hundreds of files from a Mac to a PC. I copied them to a USB drive. When I copy them to the PC each file has 2 parts. I did some research and the second part is called a resource fork.

It seems that the 2 parts need to be combined and I'm wondering what is the easiest way to do this.

In W2K (SP4) for the last week I have been unable to copy/paste or drag files to new folders, a floppy or the desktop. I've run Norton (System Works) anti virus and Spy Bot and Trend 'virus screener' - all say "clean". Am able to "save as" from within programs; can create a text file and save it to desktop but can't copy that file to another location.

No error messages appear - just a 'bong' (can't do that!) sound when trying to paste.

I've been using divx to dvd to convert my files and copy to dvd to burn them with....I've been trying to burn 4 episodes of a series but everytime I do there's only one episode on the dvd....I've added all 4 folders and it still doesn't work....I've also tried converting all 4 files into one but that doesn't work either and I've also tried nero but that doesn't work either...I've wasted several dvd's trying to fix this so does anyone know whats causing this? or anyone other programs I could use?

A:Can't copy files onto DVD

First of all to play in a DVD player the files must be encoded into MPEG2 format. MPEG2 can get to be a tad big, which sometimes would only allow one video.

When I tried to convert Yu Yu Hakusho to DVD I could only fit roughly 2-3 episodes on a 4.7 GB disk. Ofcourse thats for DVD format, but if i were just saving to data, the OGMs are only about 200-300 mb.

In english: DivX is more compressed. When converting to a DVD format like MPEG2 the filesize grows.

So hey people,

Today I'm having a weird problem. I downloaded an addon for Firefox, but I can't install it for some weird reason.
Long story short, I can't copy/open/look at the file even as system (nt authority/system), administrator or limited user. (No power user on Vista/7 as far as I'm concerned)

So any ideas?
