Product key giving product is upgrade not clean install on activation

Q: Product key giving product is upgrade not clean install on activation

I picked up this lenovo laptop and shortly after I got it the HDD went out. I replaced the HDD and Installed a full version of Windows XP SP2 then used the Win 7 upgrade disc I bought. I did a clean install of the Win 7 then I activated it at that time without any issues. Some time after that I started getting the message it wasn't a genuine copy. I rearmed the time period but I'm not able to activate the copy again with the PID. I get the message this product is for upgrade and not a clean install. I need to find out if I will be able to register this copy or if I will need to start over from scratch. I did try putting in another PID but it didn't activate with it. I haven't been able to change the PID back due to the message I am getting about the upgrade not clean install.

I appreciate any help I can get with this issue.

Preferred Solution: Product key giving product is upgrade not clean install on activation

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys, so after my girlfriend dropping my laptop, everything was wiped and the hard drive rendered unusable. I bought a new hard drive and installed Windows 7 using an *upgrade* disc that was purchased not for this laptop but for another desktop within the household, therefore the product key would not be valid for this installation.

Originally, before the drop, I had bought and downloaded Windows 7 version online, so the product key was emailed to me. That email account is no longer available as I bought it through the student deal (and am now no longer a student so i cant access the college email).

Any ideas what i should do? I have used keyfinders to locate my product key but the key provided does not work. I have also tried method 2 on this website: http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/clean_install_upgrade_media.asp but to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I bought (about 6 months ago) an upgrade version of windows 7 to put onto a laptop running XP [MCE2005]. After installing (custom install obviously) I tried to use my XP product key to activate windows, but this failed.

My question is why did it fail? Was a new product key meant to be supplied with the upgrade DVD?
Cheers

You cant activate win7 with the XP product key (elementary my dear Watson), you need a win7 product key. If you bought the student edition, you would have got the key via email.

As many of you are now finding out, in order to upgrade your copy of XP to Vista, you need to have XP currently installed on the computer and the setup program must be run from withing XP. No longer can you boot off of the setup DVD and just insert the media of older versions that you are upgrading from. What this means is that there is no true way of doing a clean install from a formatted hard drive as when you enter the Vista product key it will tell you the setup must be run from within the previous operating system. Another issue that occurs is that you will invalidate the XP product key that you are upgrading from.Paul Thurott has discovered from internal Microsoft documents another method that you can use to perform a full install. When prompted to enter your product key, Do not enter it. Instead click on the Next button and continue with the setup. This will install Vista as a 30-day trial.

When prompted select the edition of Vista which you had purchased. So if you purchase Home Premium, select Home Premium. This is important, so do not pick a version that you did not purchase as it will affect later steps.

Once the setup has completed and you are back at your new Vista desktop, run the setup program from the Vista DVD again from within the new Vista 30-day trial.

Yesterday, I tried to help my father to activate some used laptops. 3 of 4 proceeded without difficulties. The last one has only 2 days left for activation.

I tried entering the product code key that is stored in the battery compartment. it is registered as a windows 7 Pro.

Upon completion, the activation program responded: "The product key you have entered will not work with this edition of Windows 7. You must run a windows 7 home premium product key."

To my surprise, yes, the current software says it is windows home!

I called microsoft. they verified that it is a genuine registration number but since it is a pre-installed program they cannot help me with it. They said I need to contact Lenovo. I haven't been able to find technical help on their website.

Of course, there is no warranty left on these used computers and they did not come with any software cd or usb.

I am hoping someone can help us figure out how to go about making this laptop usable.

I've been browsing the internet for countless hours and nothing seems to work. Once I finish backing up the rest of my files via copying and pasting them to an external HD, I plan on doing a clean install of Windows 7.

What I have:
-4GB flashdrive with Windows 7 Home Premium ISO
-Product key from COA sticker on bottom of laptop

Is that all I need to successfully install and then activate Windows 7? I read somewhere that I need the activation backup, but that's not possible to get considering I would need to download a program on the computer.

I am going to be setting up some new computers and I was wondering about product keys.

Every computer you buy comes with it's own product key for whatever version of windows you have installed (Windows 7 Pro, Universal, etc.).

It takes forever to uninstall everything they put on those computers so I'm planning on doing a Automated Installation using Microsoft's WAIK.

I was wondering if I could create a new image from a Windows 7 Install disk (in this case Windows 7 Pro) with all the customizations I plan for it (specific installed software and system preferences) for installation on the new Lenovo computers and then use the product key that came with those computers to activate the installation.

I fear that the key is one issued directly to the OEM (in this case Lenovo) and is special only to them - can't be used on commercial or even OEM W7 install disks.

Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Clean install of windows 7 with the pc's product key?

I am not 100% sure what you are trying to do. But the product keys come with the installation disk and that is the key you have to use for the installation. The product key that came with your lenovo system is specific to the OS that is installed on that lenovo system. It is an OEM key and cannot be moved to another system nor can it be applied to another installation disk.

A year ago I bought an HP with factory installed 64 bit vista. I had nothing but problems with it. When 7 came out I ordered an upgrade copy. After doing an upgade install not only did some problems remain but I got even more. Over the past 3 months I've spent so many hours on the phone with tech support it adds up to between 2+3 days. I've let them take over my computer at least a dozen times with no help. I reinstalled the upgrade no help. They finally told me to do a clean install, that didn't help either. Now I want to do a clean install on a new hard drive so I don't have to deal with any scrap of vista still left. How can I do that without voiding my product key?

I will get you our tutorial shortly. If you have an upgrade DVD, the rule is that you can only use it on one computer at a time, as long as you have an OS that permits you to purchase the upgrade DVD. Follow the tutorial that I will bring shortly. Keep your doucmentation etc for Vista and you will be ok

I how downloaded my Windows 10 Professional x64 ISO using Microsoft's Media Creation Tool.  I created my boot media on USB.  Now that I am installing it, it is asking for a Product Key.  The Windows 7 Pro OA product key that is listed under the battery of my Dell Latitude E5530 is not working.
- I can skip the initial failure and install Windows 10 on the drive
- Once the OS has loaded and walking through the inital setup screens, I am prompted again
- Finally get logged in (just using local accounts, and not a Live Account) I try to activate again.
The product key fails with error code 0x004f050.  This is basically a "Key" not valid.
So what do we do with this scenario?  Do I need a different key from Dell?  Do I need special OEM media from Dell to recognize the BIOS?
I know this is early, just wasn't sure about what protocol we need to use to upgrade hardware or just do a fresh installation with Windows 10.
Thanks,

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.
You may need to activate by phone.

I've searched through the forum and I think I have most of the answers, however I am a bit confused over product keys.

I have an older 32 bit Vista system which is a candidate for an upgrade to W8 64 bit.

I also have a newer W7 64bit system which I don't want to upgrade

I think that if I take the ?24.99 upgrade option then I can download W8 to my W7 64 bit system, save to an ISO file, burn a DVD then use the DVD for a clean install to another system (i.e. format the drive so it is empty then run a W8 install from scratch).

If all this is true, then my one unanswered question is "can I use the product key from the original 32 bit Vista install"?

Oh, supplementary:

I can see multiple possible sources of W8 Pro Upgrade, and two
Microsoft Store United Kingdom Online Store - Buy and download Windows 7 Professional, home file sharing, network connectivity, Home Premium
and
Buy Windows - Microsoft Windows
come in at ?24.99 but I'm not sure both are direct from Microsoft.

Which is the better site to use or will either do?

Cheers

A:Clean install and product keys - 32 bit Vista to 64 bit W8

Hello LGC, and welcome to Eight Forums,

Yes, you can replace the 32-bit Vista with a 64-bit Windows 8 upgrade.

If you like, you could also use the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant to purchase and download the ?24.99 ($39.99) Windows 8 upgrade ISO file on your 64-bit W7, create a bootable DVD or USB with the ISO, then clean install the 64-bit Windows 8 upgrade on your 32-bit Vista computer. During installation, you would enter the W8 product key.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hello, sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I guessed it was the best one for it. My computer has gotten really clunky and likes to crash, so I decided I might as well clean install it. I keep my important stuff on my external, so there's not an issue with that. My problem, however, is that my product key is in an non-accessible email. I didn't think this would be a big deal at first, I just used a product key finding program, but since I have Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, the only key I can find is my Media Center key. I know this is only an add on key, I can't use it to activate my Windows. Is there anyway I can still find my original Windows 8 Pro product key?

Hey. Out of all of my computer experience i have never heard of or seen this problem.

I downloaded windows upgrade advisor on my laptop and ran it. It said that I was able to run windows 7. So i installed it using usb because my laptop only has a cd drive, not a dvd drive. After installing it and it prompted me that it was going to restart and it did but when it came on again, it skipped all of the setup process such as entering username, computer name, password, my preferences for updates, and product key. it went straight to a screen asking me for a username and password......... i never created one so it's kind of difficult to get past that screen. haha.

i never altered installation files or anything I just used diskpart to set up the usb drive and then just transfered the files diectly from the windows dvd to the usb using another computer. =\

Any help would be greatly appreciated. =P

Thanks in advance!
Jon

Thats not a regular win7 disk. Its a modded one, probably with an answer file (autounattend.xml) that did all that work for you. Even in 3rd party tools like RT7lite theres an unattend option that automates steps like user creation, product key and regional settings.

My cousin give me a HP Mini 110-3715TU which is running Windows 7 Starter. After 15 days it won't start and I've decided to perform a clean install, However I used a retail copy of Windows 7 which I write to a USB Flash Drive. After the installation, I can't activate it using the product key on the COA sticker, it says that the product key are not valid. It is possible that OEM Product Keys are for OEM versions of Windows or it is meant for the OS only pre-installed by the OEM?

P.S. On the COA Sticker it says "Windows 7 Starter OA SEA".

Thank You.

A:Activating a Windows 7 Retail Clean Install using a OEM Product Key

As far as I know, that Product Key on that sticker can only activate Starter version, which I am guessing isn't the retail version you had on your installer.

Hi,
I've stupidly done a clean install of Vista Home Premium 32bit on a friends computer, with out looking to see if the product license key was still on the back of the laptop, it wasn't it has now warn away to the point of being unreadable. I therefore can't activate the copy to be valid.
I have decided an upgrade to windows 7 could be a solution.
However I'm worried that because an upgrade requires a valid copy of windows vista it won't work while in the 30 day grace period.
Is this the case or not?
Does anyone even know the answer to this question?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

First I apologize for asking something I am sure has been asked many times, but cant find a definitive answer.

Is there a way to Extract the qualifying windows 7 product key after W10 clean install ?

I did a clean install of W10 after a free W10 upgrade installed and activated. But the activation failed and a MS support person asked me for the original W7 qualifying key......I look after many computers and for some reason cant find which key was used for this PC.....So hope there is a way to find it....

I have now restored a backup and W10 is again activated.....so is this key stored anywhere ?

Many thanks

Hello all and many thanks for any advice given.

A coworker's Asus laptop crashed with a Status Oxc000000f error. He was unable to get to any other screen. I offered to try to fix it and have just run into error after error. Ultimately after everything else had failed I bought a new Hard Drive to install and ran a clean install from a disc I had burned. The laptop came pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Premium with the Product Code sticker right there on the bottom. After the laptop booted to the desktop there is a Windows Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not Genuine error message in the bottom right corner of the screen. Almost everything seems normal otherwise. Except for internet access, when I try internet explore it will not load and the diagnostics show that it is missing a properly installed network adapter.

I am not a computer wiz by any stretch of the imagination, probably shouldn't have attempted as much as I have, but I'm in this deep I'd like to see it through. If any one has any advice on how I can correct these issues I would be very greatful.

Do you have any particular reason to believe that it is a genuine copy?

Where did you get the ISO that you burned? I'm assuming it was an ISO.

Did you attempt to activate Windows?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have other posts on my VISTA reinstall problems but I'll make it short to say I had to reinstall my OS. Knowing I had to reinstall Office, I also installed Works 9.0 that came with computer (Dell). Now, that is exactly what was installed before when I installed the Office 2007 just fine the first time (pre-reinstall of VISTA).

However, now when I go to install Office, it tells me it can't find a required upgrade product. On the box Works 9 is listed as an eligible product and that is what I have installed. It gives me an option to browse to the folder where it is installed but I've tried and don't quite know where to point it to find what it wants. Works seems to be in many folders.

Does anyone know what I can do? I don't have internet on that specific computer right now because of the VISTA reinstall issues (see other post) has created an issue with all the network drivers.

I have just finished my PC build with the PSU coming in the post today and windows 7 coming shortly after. I have a Revodrive 3 ssd 120gb which needed drivers installed first to work. Wasn't a problem I just inserted a memory stick with them on.

I get through expanding files etc fine just when I get to the product key part it says key not valid.
Two things I think are causing the problem, it is a upgrade package for 3 PC's, I am not doing a upgrade as it is a bran new PC with no OS. Also it says for US distribution only but I am in the UK.

This is what I bought

I have contacted the seller and I am waiting for a response.

If I can not use this windows 7 do I have to wipe the ssd to install a different windows 7 product key? If it is a windows 7 home premium key?
How do I wipe it?

A:Product key activation

The sticker on your laptop will be the product key for your OEM version of Windows, not Microsoft Office Word.

If you don't have a product key for Word you will most likely have to buy another one before you can use it.

Is it a version that came pre-installed with your computer? If so, it will most likely be a trial version and you will definitely have to buy a product key from the Microsoft Store to carry on using Word.

me that I have 30, 26, 14 days to activate. everytime that I click on the
icon it shows that windows is already activated and click exit.
I know that if windows is not activated, windows will generate a product
ID and phone numbers for Microsoft to activate. since the product is showing
that it is activated it will not generat a product ID and no phone number for
activation. Please help, it is driving me up the wall because it is always popping up in the middle of my sessions. Thanks

This seems to be a strange problem, but here is how you disable Baloon-tips in Windows XP:

Fire up "regedit", go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Advanced
then:
modify the DWORD value EnableBalloonTips,
Valuedata instead of a 1, make it a 0.
Done. No more Baloon-tips.

It will not allow you to go around the Activation, it will simply disable all Notifications.

I'm doing a fresh install of XP Home, SP1, and I have the SP2 CD as well.

Will XP SP2 still destroy your system if you install new hardware after installing the service pack?

Do you still need to do that software activation thing within 90 days where you have to register with Microsoft and they scan the hardware in your computer and if you don't XP SP2 destroys your system?

What do you do if you have no internet connection and want to install XP2?

Can you get it validated or activated over the phone or will it just destroy your system?

Cheers

on numerous machines without a problem. If you add new hardware you
may or may not have to reactivate. Xp is kind of flakey in how it discerns
new hardware. But even that is no big deal. If you have a internet connection
just reactivate. If not there is a phone number you can call that will

This means I have a copy of windows XP pro laying around, not installed on anything. So legally I can install it on a different computer, correct?

As far as product activation goes, is it a pain to install XP on another machine after it's been installed on a different one?

Thanks.

A:XP pro product activation

It requires a simple phone call and an explanation of the circumstances. They will then give you a new 25 digit number to enter. It's no big deal and they handle several calls like yours daily. I suppose if you did it too frequently they might suspect you were up to no good but an occasional computer swap is reasonable.

Best regards.

How many activations do i get per key and if it is only one what happens when i use it twice?

A:Activation key(product key)

You should get infinite activations with the key, AS LONG AS, it is used on the one computer, when you use it the second time, I should think you have to phone microsoft to reactivate it, I take it they kept the situation the same as XP, so thats what i'm going by.

XP usually generates a key for the computer hardware to check its on the one computer and if not asks you to reactivate, where microsoft can see past activations etc. All in place to simply stop you installing on as many PCs as possible.

A friend of a friend did the job, and he did not get an XP PRO CD or any kind of a Product Key when he got his computer back, so we are rather leary about the whole thing.

Believe that installing XP PRO (full install) requires the Windows Product Activation, but does installing XP PRO as an upgrade over W98SE require the Product Activation procedure?
