Preferred Solution: Computer Screen Is Turning Off And On

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Here is the issue, when my computer goes to sleep after it's on for a while when I move the mouse to get the screen back up it shows the backround no icons or anything to click.
Same if I turn it off and turn it back on. I have to turn it off and on many times then go to safe mode and shut down then turn it on again for it to work. Just now I had to turn it on/off 4 times for it to show the icons and task bar. Usually it is left blank with nothing to click having no choice but to turn it off.
Norton says no viruses.
My computer is HP with windows 7. I bought it in 2011.
This problem has been happening for a long time. Please help.

A:When turning off computer & turning it back on again screen is blank

Hello squirrels and welcome to Seven Forums.

I think I'd start out by trying to do a startup repair. It's been suggested that the startup repair be done 3 times (regardless of what the notifications say) and the computer rebooted after each repair.

If this doesn't fix the problem one of the Forum experts has prepared these troubleshooting guides with some additional suggestions.

Hi im new here and need some help so this is my first post,
My partners computer screen keeps turning off for no apparent reson, first we started by restarting the screen and some times it may stay on,
but today that dousent even work, after a restart of the computer and of the monitor the screen will dim for a secound then turn off, well it go's blank the power light is still on.
Iv played with the cord while the computer is still on and some times the picture comes back but only for a secound but then disapears again i noticed she also has an adaptore on the end of her cord that go's into the box (sorry no idea on what type of plug it is but its not the normal plug, hence the adaptor it douse have gigabyte printed on it)
I dont belive its the video card coz the picture is fine when its on with no errors but im not shore if the plug itself is stuffed.
Im not shore if its the cable coz when the screen is blank it still has the blue light and when i unplug it after about 30sec it will change to orange, so i belive the computer is still giving a signel to the screen.
And i cant tell if its the screen coz i couldent work out a way i could test it.
Im not shore what the problem is and we dont have alot of money to go out buying all new parts to try work the problem out if any one can help that would be great.

Please fill out your system specs. Read the link in my signature for instructions. We can't help unless we know what hardware you are using.

My apologies. That information no longer exists, apparently. I'll find the instructions and post an updated link.

*edit* I updated my signature link - this will take you directly to your system specs, where you can update your information.

So whenever I turn on my computer, it will load up to the log in screen and after a short period of time the screen gets all distorted and fuzzy about 95% of the time. Most of the time it will freeze  there or lead a blue screen of death, or if I'm lucky enough nothing will happen and my pc will have no issues logging in. I don't know if I am allowed to link images as the file is quite big.
This is somewhat solved by going into safe mode and letting it sit there for about an hour then pressing the restart button, but it is only a temporary solution. This is not a monitor issue as this was also happening on one of my old monitors. I tried updating windows and most of my drivers yet this is still happening.

However when I boot it up in safe mode it works 100% of the time but it gets stuck at classpnp.sys for about one minute then boots up normally. So this might be a driver issue, I tried doing SFC /scannow on command prompt about 7 times yet the problem is still not fixed. I also stopped all services at startup as well using msconfig.exe. I also tried the chkdsk multiple times.

This problem has been irritating me for a while, so when I'm not using the computer it put it to sleep to avoid this painful process again.

I do not know what to do now and hopefully i can find a solution to my problem.

A:Screen Distortions when turning on computer

Hi tricktrolled, welcome to BleepingComputer
You mentioned having BSODs, right? The dumpfiles created during these BSODs could help us determinate the problem to the issue you're facing. Can you move the files under C:\windows\minidump\ to a new folder you'll create on your Desktop, then archive (compress) that document and attach it in your next reply?

My computer has been booting into the infamous Blue Screen of Death recently. I am running Windows 7 Professional.

I am able to get to the login screen where I type in my password, but after successfully logging in, it blue screens and reboots causing an infinite rebooting cycle. I can get into safe mode and into my other partition, but that's about it. I also don't have a Windows 7 install CD, so I can't run chkdsk in order to fix any problems.

This has happened before, and I was able to fix it with RegRun where I got rid of some weird drivers. The problem now when I run it is that it tells me that my system.ini is infected, but when I click that button to remove it, it tells me it's getting rid of explorer.exe, which is "100% good".

Any help is appreciated!

(I've posted this in the "Am I infected? What do I do?" forum, but I think that this is where it needs to be.)

Attached are my logs that I created in Safe Mode (because booting up normally results in a blue screen). I'm also using 64-bit Windows 7 Professional, but I was able to run GMER (with limited checkbox options).

This happens several times a day. Up until the other night, it onl happened when the computer is idle. While my son was typing up a report it happened. He ended up losing 6 pages of work. We clicked every button, checked every cable, nothing worked. We had to push the off button on the front of the tower to get it to unfreeze. I thought that maybe it was the hibernation thingy but I disabled that and it is still doing it. We are having another problem with it as well. When we try to hook anything (ipod, psp) up to the USB port on the front of the tower, we get a message saying that the device is not recognized. Any Clues for either problem? Thanks in advance!

Everytime I turn my computer on it will start goes through the first couple of screens and then right before it gets to the screen where you type your password to log onto your computer its a blank black screen. I realized after doing this many times that if I leave it on this black screen after a good 10 to 15 min it goes onto the logon screen and I type in my password and it logs into the computer. Takes a while to start up so I try to run a virus scan and then it will restart the computer and nothing happens. Also I am able to log onto safe mode just fine but if I have to many things going on it freezes and I have to restart the computer and I am then back to square one.

Before you read this, I am not very good with tech.
so..

My computer is a HP PC with Windows 7. If someone could tell me how to get more information by typing something on the computer, that would be great.
I have avast!, I have 6GB Ram, Nividia Graphics Card (yet again, if someone could tell me how to get more info) and my computer has some problems.

When I turn my PC on, it takes around 5 minutes of the mouse in the middle of a black screen for it to get to the screen where you log in.

After that, the computer is okay. Recently, however, it has started to make a really loud noise, and is getting very very hot. It burns if I put my skin on it.

When I play games like LoL, Dota 2 and Arma 2, my screen sometimes goes black and the only way to fix it is by turning my PC on and off, and when it takes 10 minutes to get back to the point where I can open the game, this is very detrimental to my gameplay.

To be more specific, the screen has a little cut out where I can see a black screen with lines in it for a split second, then the screen goes black. I can still hear and talk to my friends in Teamspeak, but then, sometimes, after about 20 seconds, the sound cuts out and gets stuck on the sound last heard before it cut out.

Black Screen? My computer randomly turns off alot, and when it does, I am usually playing games.
Now, when I turn it back on, it loads up the HP screen, then it goes to a black screen with a mouse in the middle of it for what I timed as around 5 MINUTES. ... Read more

If I read this correctly it seems as if even on another monitor it has a bit of an issue.  Have you tried getting into safe mode as you boot up?  Try tapping F8 repeatedly as it boots, if it works in safe mode that would rule out a hardware issue.

Hello everyone - I am a new member of the forum and hope that someone reading this might be able to help me with a problem I have with my computer.

In recent weeks the computer screen keeps freezing with the cursor being replaced by the hour glass symbol. This usually happens after several hours' computer usage - but sometimes it occurs soon after the computer is turned on.

When this happens, I am unable to log off; the computer on/off button does not work when the screen freezes and I have to turn the computer off at the mains.

In order to be able to log back into my broadband internet connection I have to turn the computer and and off twice and then on again .

Sometimes when the computer screen image freezes a message box appears always saying "End programme" (i.e. "End programme - CiceroUIWndFrame" or "End programme - mixer").

My computer runs on the Windows XP operating system.

I changed from Internet Explorer browser 6 to 7 yesterday but the problem of the computer screen freezing persists.

Any helpful advice on this would be much appreciated.

How old is your computer? Have you ever reinstalled your OS?

What I usually recommend is if your computer is at least a couple of years old and have yet to do a clean install of your Operating System now is the time, especially when it starts acting up =)

Is there a really simple way to do this?

Long story short, My computer suddenly shut off, And when i pressed the power button it would attempt to turn on then just fail and shut down completely[no signal to anything, only fans]
I cleaned out the pc and cleaned out the power supply, reassembled and it turned on as per normal. i used it for about 35 minutes, set it to sleep for an hour or two, turned it on, used it for about an hour and a half then it suddenly turned off again. When this happens it either powers on for 2 seconds then powers down, or it powers up all fans and mouse led but no signal to keyboard or screen whatsoever i assumed it was the power supply so i purchased a new one today and installed it, It turned on first try, i assumed it was fixed, i used it, set it to sleep as per normal and went to turn it on again and it turned on all fans but once again no power to anything else, just fans it seems. I tried everything[I have two sticks of ram so i switched them/used them singularly tried running without fans, Oddly it didn't beep even without video card or ram but nothing made a difference. I just borrowed a single 2gb stick of ram from a friend and it successfully powered on and I am using it normally.. But i just can't imagine the problem was just the ram and i expect it to power off again soon, Can anyone help?

Hi everyone,

From last few weeks I'm having this strange and annoying blank screen of death. I could just see a blank screen (not a blue screen) while either waking up computer from sleep or while trying to turn on the display by moving cursor/typing something(waking up from power saver mode of display, I set display to be of after few minutes of inactivity). So essentially screen becomes total blank. Just once or twice I saw this BSOD "DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE" but for all other times my screen is just blank. I could see the Hard Disk activity LED on during this blank screen. And almost after all subsequent boots, I could see "Windows has recovered from unexpected shutdown/serious error - Check for solution" message.

System - Windows 7 Pro x64 with all latest recommended and security updates
CPU - i7 2630QM
GPU - nVidia GT525M
MoBo - Factory default for Dell XPS L502X

First I suspected its because of my nVidia GT525M GPU drivers (I was using official latest drivers 320.49), so I completely uninstalled them with regular uninstall + DriverSweeper 2.1.0 from Guru3D.com. I did not install any nVidia/display drives since then. But just now I got another blank screen after it. Also I started connecting my PC to an old Sony Bravia TV with HDMI cable and that time the automatic installation of drivers failed. That is my second point of possible problem. I've been using CCleaner to clean the unwanted registry entries and revo uninstaller for almost every unin... Read more

Dear all, Happy new year and all

I wonder if you could help...

My husbands laptop this evening will not turn on AT ALL. It was working perfectly well a few days ago:

When the power button is turned on all that happens is the power light turns green. There is no sound coming from the hard drive (the hard drive light doesn't even show). In addition, there doesn't seem to be a fan working. And finally, there is a light strange noise (not a hard drive noise).

I am wondering whether it is a motherboard issue????
Woud creating a recovery bios boot CD help? Would like wipe the hard drive?

The major problem is that the laptop is used for all our business transactions and GASP.... we haven't backed it up, so we could potentially lose very important data
Many thanks and I do hope somebody is out there to help us.

Much geekness

Just few hours ago I was listening to songs on Napster. Then I played some online games. I had to reboot at one point since it was going slow on me.

For some reasons unknown, my computer turns off and tried to boot itself, but kept turning off and booted itself. Somehow it did that in a loop. I tried to wipe up some dirt from inside(it may not be completely wiped up). I even tried to rearrange the cables and such. Now, if I press the power button, it only shows the power indicator, but it won't boot. I'm just puttoping it to rest right now hoping that it would back up tomorrow when I turn it on.

I have Velocity Micro with Windows XP SP3 (update progression). Motherboard: ASUS. I posted this using my laptop. I appreciate any help or input.

Let me clarify. My brother brought his computer over for me to recable it. Simple process right? Not so much. Before I get into details, let me give you specs. Keep in mind since I did not build the system, I do not have all the information I usually would.

Windows Vista
4 GB of RAM (unknown brand)
Abit motherboard (unknown serial number)
AMD athlon 64 3.0 GHZ processor
4 250GB harddrives (In raid configuration to look like 2 hard drives @ 500GB each)
Antec 550 watt power supply
Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT Video card

Okay, so when I recabled everything and powered the system on, it would not boot at all. Everything was on and running, but the bios was not doing anything, and everything was at a standstill. Not knowing if the raid configuation and the motherboard had anything to do with it, I started swtiching the sata connections into different configurations based on what I think the individual would have done. In doing this I accidentally pulled a jumper from the motherboard. Setting it aside and not thinking it was important, I plugged everything back in and attempted to power on the computer.

This is where it gets interesting. Instead of even powering on like it did last time, it powered up for MAYBE one second before shutting off. Any other attempts to power it on were futile, and resulted in nothing.

After this, I replaced the jumper where it was supposed to go, and powered on the system again. The same thing happened. I want to think the power supply is toast, but I wou... Read more

The issue i'm having is when my computer goes into sleep/hibernate mode and i wake it up, the screen appears to have a resolution issue ( picture attached ). I figured this wasn't a big deal so i turned sleep/hibernate mode off and just turn my screen off when not in use. I'm getting the exact issue though! So now i need help resolving this. If it also fixes it for the sleep/hibernate mode, that would be great but not necessary

Are you having the same issues when using a standard computer monitor instead of using a HD TV?

For a while now i had a problem with my computer crashing when i play moderately computer intensive game. Games like Euro truck sim will make my computer turn off/ crash in a matter of minutes while far cry 4 cant get passed the loading screen except for the first time i played and that time it only lasted 20 mins. This power supply however works most of the time no problem. Its an 850w so power consumption shouldn't be the problem. it may be worth noting i just got a new gpu (gtx 970 used to have a 550ti). Thanks!

Yesterday I was in a hurry and it was taking a long time to shut the laptop down. So I went for a force shut down. But now when I am turning on the laptop, nothing is happening. The screen is black, nothing is coming up. I thought it's a screen problem, but the buttons are also not working. I tried the Caps lock button, Mute button, Airplane mode button, but nothing is happening. The screen is black. And nothing is coming. I waited for 10-15 mins but nothing is happening. Restarted the device quite a number of times, removed the battery and then tried to turn it on. But at the end, the problem is still there. I need it today at 3 in the afternoon. If someone can help, it will be very kind.

I had to do a clean wipe on a virus/malware infected HP All In One Touchsmart 310-1000z (2010 model). I have turned off hibernate, sleep, hybrid sleep, and hard drive sleep. Screen is set to dim at 3 minutes and screen saver at 10 minutes. But for some reason, the screen will just go blank randomly, it seems like maybe 45-60 minutes after being turned on.

Clicking the mouse does not bring the screen back, nor typing on keyboard, nor touching the screen. Have to press the power button and shut it off that way. The hard drive light does not flicker, leading me to believe it may still be going into a sleep mode I can't find?

I restarted the computer, but the screen stays on standby. The hard drive starts but beeps a few times then loads up the operating system.

does anyone know what is causing the screen not turning on, do I just need a new crt monitor?

Hi guys!I have a Toshiba Encore tablet with windows 8.1 on it. After an update yesterday, the screen doesn't turn off when it gets in sleep mode.It turn black, but it still has the background light on.The same update messed up the screen luminosity. It is set to maximum by default, and no matter how much I change it, nothing happens. The battery drains very fast with the screen on this way and I really don't know how to solve it.I tried system restore, but it didn't have any images saved, so I need a solution apart from that. Many thanks!

You could try rolling back the updates until you uninstall the "bad" one. Process of elimination is all I know if you cannot restore point your way out or apply a backup image.

Hello,I'm not sure if this is the right place to post but hopefully I can get some help or be forwarded to a place a I can.So a few years ago my parents purchased a C40-05 all-in-one desktop. From the start there were problems. It would hang at the Lenovo screen, continuously have to enter Windows Repair and would not shut down correctly. After updating via the latest updates from both Windows and Lenovo, the desktop's display seems to be not working. When I power on the screen just stays blank as if no power is going to it. However, if I put in a CD i can hear it spin and also I can see the power buttons on both the mouse and keyboard light up. I can't even access the bios as there is no display what so ever.  Any of you experienced this or know how I can fix it? At this point it's not really worth taking to a shop but if I could access the bios at least that would be a start. ThanksChris

My monitor turns off every now and again, I've changed the monitor to test if it was that which was causing the problem but it still happens. I've also changed the wire, checked the power supply (seems fine from what I can tell) and replaced the hard drive. I could be playing a game or doing nothing on it at all and it would happen.

Don't think it's the graphics card as when it does work the images are fine.

One thing I noticed when it does turn off is that my external hard drive turns off too but the computer remains on,also once when I was playing music when the screen went off the music stopped too. Makes me think its a hardware problem but not sure which.

I have no idea what I did wrong.

Took apart my laptop (see signature/system specs) to get the part number off the fan and put the computer back together as normal. Turned it on and voila, no display. Don't know why. Rechecked the connection of the display cable a few times, and still no display. I'm wondering if maybe I damaged the cable or the system board. The computer turns on though, just no display!
Took apart the lid to check the screen. Firstly, HP's construction continues to amaze me. These things are built like tanks for sure! Secondly, there's no visible damage to the screen or any components inside of the lid. Going to put it back together and test the screen one more time, and if that doesn't work, I'll test with an external monitor to see how things work out...

I know, vague, but I'm kinda stuck/lost here.
Help?

A:Screen not turning on

Hello kbronski,

Keep in mind that all the LCD wire connectors are extremely fragile. Do not apply too much force while reconnecting the cables. Secure the connector with the clear tape.

If the external monitor doesn't work, try power cycling:

shut down
unplug battery and charger
hold power button for 5 to 10 seconds to drain all residual power
plug battery and charger back in
done....

If the external monitor does work, hold down the FN key while you tap the F-key with a picture of a monitor. Perhaps, it got turned off.

Hey guys,
First off, great forum, I've learned alot from this place.

Now, I have a problem I cant seem to solve or find in the archives.

My computer will just randomly lock up after being on the internet. Sometimes it happens after a few minutes, somtimes after 20. It can be really frustrating because it's so random. There doesn't seem to be a method to what's happeneing. I'll go to load a page or something and my computer will just freeze and have the hourglass turning constantly. When I go down to the taskbar it will turn back into the arrow, but I can't click anything. And I can't Ctl-alt-delete to get to the task manager, so I just have to unplug the computer.

It seems to come and go. There's no parrellel I can see in the sites or what I'm doing, they're not heavy pages or intense flash/video or anything. Just checking email and googling stuff and it just happens.

I've ran a norton virus check multiple times and turned up nothing... and I'm lost. Please help!

Here's my tech specs, if they'll help:
- Windows xp
- multiple browsers (tried out with explorer, firefox, opera)
- pentium 4 2.52ghz, 1gb ram, 120gb hd
- Adelphia cable internet through a cisco wireless cable router (I have another computer that I've plugged into the cable internet and never ran into the problem.. so I think it's gotta be something software or hardware related.)

Thanks so much for any tips or ... Read more

I have a dv3-22330 Laptop that only recently has starting to have problems that occured about a week or two ago. On startup the LCD display does not show anything just a black screen but everything else continues to function as normal like it should, i have tried all of the suggested ideas like taking out all the power and holding the power button for 60 seconds to get rid of any charge that maybe triggering the failsafe.

The strangest thing is that im writting this thread on the very same laptop, after some testing done earlier the laptop screen will only turn on when the power cable is plugged in but will not turn the screen off when taken out again.

Laptop + Battery = No Screen
Laptop + Battery with power cable plugged in after or during boot up = Screen on
Laptop + Power cable = Screen on
Laptop + Battery + Power cable = Screen On

This surely rules out that the common suggestion that i found like backlight, inverter ect isnt the problem and this also does not sound like a dodgey cable as the power cable would have no effect on a wonky cable. The most obvious problem might be that it has to do with the Power Saving settings but they are set so they also do not turn the screen off in anyway although with the power cable plugged in makes the screen come on you would be lead to believe it is.

Any help to this problem would be greatly appreciated as this is baffeling me.

Thanks.
