Start a window or program at a specific position and custom window size

Q: Start a window or program at a specific position and custom window size

Thanks for all the help. I want to make my shorcuts start programs and windows (In WIndows Xp Pro SP3) at a certain position and with a certain size.

For instance I want to open Excell at position 20,30 (x,y) with a window size of 750 x 200, or maybe a internet explorer window at position 129, 357 with a window size of 562 x 397.

I gave the odd numbers in the example so that people responding will understand that I want CUSTOM SIZES. I know how to set the shortcuts to start maximized and minimized and also window tiling. That's not what I'm talking about. Does anyone know of shortcut switch that I can use?

For instance in some games if you want to start the game with cheats enabled, you put "-devmode" after the directory path in the "target" box of the shortcut properties.

Is there any other way?

There is an awesome program called "Montage3"

which I use, but isn't exactly what I'm looking for. Please help out.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I run a couple of IP cameras on my work pc (XP Pro SP3) the viewer for which runs at startup. It always opens maximised even if I closed it previously in a modified window. As I want to shift it to a second monitor on an extended desktop I'd like it to open to a specific size window to fit the second monitor. Is there a way to do this.
Many thanks. Bob.

Up until a week ago I could minimize an open file that would fill the top half of my screen and it would go all the way from the right side to the left. After maximizing the window and then minimizing it again, it would be the same size and position as it was before. My screen resolution is 1366 x 768.

Then, and I don't know what I did wrong, when I minimize the file, it's in the same position, (top half of screen all the way to the left) but it's about an inch from the right side. I think that I had set the PC to remember the position and size of on windows. Sure doesn't work that way now.

I've searched everywhere and I can't find how to reset it. Any ideas?

Thank you

A:Window - same size & same position not working

Hello BB,

If you moved it back to the way you wanted, and closed the file, does it open the same way as it was last closed again?

If not, then you could use the method in the tutorial below to reset all folder views back to default, to see if doing the above may work again.

I've been banging my head on this one all day ...We have a domain network where one of the users is complaining that her Windows 7 machine is not remember the size of a "File Upload" window. If we adjust the size manually and close out, it goes back the it's original size when we open it again. My original thought was something in the GPO was causing the issue, so we prevented all policies from applying and even created a new user to ensure it wasn't a corrupt profile. Still, no luck. We run into the same issue as the original user. However, when we log on as Domain Admin or Local Admin, the issue is resolved - we can resize windows and it's all remembered the next time we open it up. With that in mind, we created another new user, no policies applied and made them a Local Admin. Guess what ... same problem as the original user.Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this problem and if there is any way to fix it? The user states that she didn't have this problem until recently - but we have no way to verify the authenticity of that statement.Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Something I like and can't seem to get Win 7 to do for me.....

I open a window for my computer, size it and set it at the upper left of my screen. I open folders in new windows; i.e. open the D: Drive and position it next to the window I opened for my computer. Close both. When I open my computer again it is now in the position where I opened the D: Drive.

How do I get specific windows to retain the size and position I set each time I open them rather then simply pick up the size and position of the last window I opened?

Sorry for this sophomoric question; I'll probably kick myself when I know the answer.

A:Retaining window position and size.

Sorry, but all Windows Explorer windows in Windows 7 share the same position and size as the last one that was closed. They do not have individual folder view settings for these two items.

I have started using windows recently and a flood of problems has arisen. Most I have conquered but this one I just can't figure out.

When I open a window, then maximize it, then close it, and then reopen it, the maximize position is incorrect. The window does not go all the way to the top, and is not "tacked" to the edges of my screen, as maximized windows should be.

Normal maximized window (Manually maximized)
After closing the window, I reopen it. The saved maximized position is off, it's too small.
The supposedly maximized window can even be moved around!

I have googled and search and I have not found an answer.
Hopefully someone here knows!

Thanks you

Hello everyone, I have a laptop that I often use with an external monitor and I'm a person who likes to have my windows organized in a specific way every time. Now my problem is that when, for example I am using my external monitor and have everything set up the way I like it, then I need to take my laptop somewhere, so I have to use the laptop's monitor all of my windows are resized and not organized at all, so every time I switch monitors I have to go through the process of moving and adjusting the sizes of the windows every time, which has been quite tedious and annoying for the last year. So I did some Googling for my little problem, however I found NOTHING about the problem as far as Windows goes. I found two separate applications that sound like exactly what I need, however they are for Mac only. I'll post the links to those so that you can read the descriptions of what they do if you aren't quite fully grasping what I'm trying to explain. .

Does anyone know of any software or way that allows me to lock/freeze any application/window on my screen
i.e. disable any change in position and size / make it completely immune to the cursor or clicking?

I'm running an application called LiveSplit, which is a timer. It always stays on top while I'm playing a game, which is a good thing, but sometimes my cursor accidentally clicks on it and then all hell breaks loose. I end up accidentally moving and resizing the window and it becomes a mess.

Hi guys,

This has been bugging the hell out of me for about two weeks. Windows is no longer starting firefox maximized, and is putting it in a really small area to start out with. I'm sick of having to maximize it every time I open it.

I'm not sure if this is with other programs or not, but I can't remember anything coinciding with the start of this.

Also, I have a weird problem in FF where any drawers or menus will only open after clicking and moving under them. For example, I click an RSS feed in my bookmarks toolbar folder. The little arrow turns black, but nothing extends out. I have to move my cursor underneath the icon for the list to pop out.

Also, when adding a site to the bookmarks, I'll open up the dialog box and click "ok", but then the text just disappears and the bookmark will be entered without a label.

Any idea what might be up?

A:Windows won't remember firefox window size/position

Try this Fox

Right click on the Firefox icon (either on your Deskptop or in the Taskbar), click Properties. Click the shortcut tab, beside the Run line, use the drop down to change the way the application should open, change it to either Normal Window or Maximized

First of all, let me thank you all in advance for this Forum and for all of the help you impart to the members.

My question specifically deals with one issue. When I am uploading a photo, a window appears, 'Choose File to Upload'.

This window appears rather small. I would like it to Re-appear permanently in a larger size.

I try dragging the window from the corners and sides, but it always re-appears in the same small size.

How do I make the window appear in my chosen size permanently?

Hey everyone, I'm having a little trouble getting my head around javascript. I made a website for someone, and they want the site to open in a window that is sized to the site, so i want the browser to fit to the site. I understand I need to use the window.open method? But I don't really understand it. I try to use it and i just get a "page cannot be displayed" message.

window.open(URL, name [, features])

where URL is, i have not published the site yet, so is there a way to make this method work with a relative location rather than a URL (because the site isn't acutually up online yet) if that makes sense.

I just can't get this method to work correctly. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks in advance

Hi there,

I'm using sound blaster X-Fi 3 and sometimes when i close the window then reopen it at a later time it comes up way too small or way too big. Ending the process then starting the software again only fixes the problem temporarily.

Is there anything i can do to fix this? as ending process then starting the software again is quite impractical.

Windows however, seems to always forget how I had it last time, and reverts to either full screen, or windowed but centered when I restart the program. I have some old XP graphics software that I need to run every few days. The problem is that it automatically goes full screen at start up and here is no way to reduce it.

When the software was written 4:3 monitors were all there was, so going full screen was fine. But, now with a 16:9 monitor it stretches everything and makes stuff very difficult to make sense of.

I am looking for something that will run the XP stuff in it's own work space so I can adjust the size of that window and in return, adjust the graphics size and shape back to 4:3.

I tried using Virtual-PCs like VMWare Player and VirtualBox but they both seem overkill and made the software run very slow as I had to use my old copy of win98 as the Guest OS. I can't afford to buy a copy of XP or win7 to use as a Guest.

Any thoughts?

Hi Champs....

Just want a liitle suggestion and a feedback on my current query, which is as follows: -

A softwatre developed from our vendors on VB, & Access platform, has different Modules.
In each modules, there are some categories, and clicking on them opens a child window.

The size of the child window created in the software is not very comfortable in viewing the details, as the size of the window is prety small, say 2/5 of the parent window.

And, considering the Parent Window size as equivalent to that of the Excel file (maximized view), the view area for the child windows created is very small.

I am not pretty familiar with VB, and hence require a technical help on the same.
I think that the increase in size is possible, through reworking on the Forms.

Please revert with the possible solutions on the same.

Hello everyone,

Last night, I caught my keyboard by accident (I think!). Since then, my start menu and sidebar got bigger; in addition, when default windows open, they too are bigger than before, as are other menus like the drop down Norton menu which is accessed from the the Norton logo on my toolbar in Mozilla.

Today, I have literally spent all day investigating how to put it back how it was. I have tried: the resolution; the start menu properties; changing to small icons; accessibility options - nothing can return my menus to how they were.

Restoring to an earlier point did not work (which was concerning); after restoration, I got a dialogue window that said something like, 'files and settings could not be restored as an anti virus programme is stopping restoration'. So, I disabled Norton Firewall and Anti Virus - got the same message!

Now, I've managed to reset the icon sizes to how they were; the clock is still bigger on the side bar, the news feeds only holds 4 stories and the start menu is so big that with the fly out menu showing too, it takes up nearly half the 20 inch monitor.

My resolution is exactly the size that it has been for months. It is like the screen is magnified; however, when I start the magnifier, it only goes from 100 to 200%. Is there another way to magnify please?

Every time I try something new, it messes up my desktop and I am out of options now.

Help please! What am I missing?

At a guess, I'd say that the UAC prompt appears near where you double-clicked the icon to start the relevant program. If you launched it from the <WINKEY>+<R> Run dialog, then UAC will appear near the bottom left of the screen.

In most programs, specifically Winamp at the moment, when I select an option that opens a Sub-Window it is placed low on the screen hiding the OK and Cancel buttons so to select either you first have to Move the Window up. IIRC this also has been happening in Win Explorer and other programs.

Is there a key or key combo you hold down while opening one of these Sub-Windows to put it back in the center of the screen.

A:Restore Default Window position.

The method that works best for me is to drag the window to the size and position you want, then click the middle Resize button a few times to program it with the position and size.

Hi all!

I - as my dayjob - am programming CNC-machines. From time to time get an idea for some code that i want to try out at home. For that reason i want a simple way to sart up everything i need and get going right away.

In particular that would be:
the emulation software of the machine
the manual of the machine (.pdf)
a picture of the american keyboard-layout (.jpg) [i'm german ]
sth. to make notes - i use MS Excel (.xlsx)
But since i use this PC for all sorts of things in between 2 projects, it is very likely that i messed up window sizes and positionings.

I would like to hard-set these values somewhere, so that whatever is saved up from previous uses gets overwritten.

My attempt to achieve this was to create a simple .bat-file that starts all of these:
