Removed operating systems and still there when booting

Q: Removed operating systems and still there when booting

Hello i have installed previous versions of operating systems in the past such as vista and ubuntu, i have removed them as i did not use them.

My question is when i boot up my laptop there still showing up to choose to boot but they dont boot becuase there removed,

does anyone know how i can remove these from my laptop from the boot up section and just use windows 7 as my main priority boot without waiting 30 seconds or what ever it is for it to load automatically?

Any help would be much appriciated,

Regards Paul

Preferred Solution: Removed operating systems and still there when booting

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

sorry if this is old topic.

my wife needs to run a chinese version (w2000) on her pc but I have only installed english.

can someone direct me to a guide for booting from more than 1 OS.

A:booting 2 operating systems

If the harddisk on that PC has more than just one partition, all you need to do is insert the chinese W2000 CD and install it on another partition. Make sure that partition is empty before you install anything in it. The install will automatically create a start-menu from which (at boottime) you can select which W2000 you want to boot.

If you have only 1 partition, get a program such as Partition Magic and follow the instructions in my post in this thread:

Everything was lovely with my boot.ini file, I have XP Home, XP Pro, Longhorn and Windows 98SE. All on one hard drive, different partitions, of course.

I installed Windows ME ( not sure what gave me that brilliant idea) --- and now my boot menu is messed up. It initially eliminated 98 and put Windows ME there, so I added 98 back, but if I choose 98 it still goes to ME, which is on an external hard drive. I installed ME by booting with a 98 bootdisk with cdrom support, and installed ME to the external drive.

Is there any way of getting my 98 boot option back? 98 is still on my main drive, I can see it, I just can't boot to it

I have a problem with 2 operating systems on my computer. I had to replace the hard drive and I could not find my xp disk so I installed 2000. I then found xp and installed it as a complete install not an upgrade. It is xp pro. Now when I start the computer it goes to a black screen asking which operating system I want to use XP or 2000. I want to get 2000 off and just run XP right from the start. Can I do it without reformatting and reinstalling XP?

Thanks

U can Edit the boot.ini file.
Right click My Computer. Click on Properties. Click on Advanced tab. Select Start up and Recovery settings. Near the top right of the dialog box click on Edit and remove the OS you do not need. And set the time shown to 0 seconds.

You might also go into C: drive and check XP installation is in a WINNT folder, and see if Windows 2000 is in a Windows folder. If that the case U can also delete the Windows folder.

I recently posted the following on another site and didn't get and helpful responses, so I'll try here (note: it involves both Vista and 7).

---

I'm having trouble installing both Windows Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64. With Vista, I can boot and make it to the desktop, but shortly thereafter I have weird graphics glitches and the screen basically becomes unusable and I have to manually reboot (it does this on each subsequent restart, as well). Additionally, the audio from my Logitech S220 is all garbled and that's a problem as well.

With Windows 7, I can't get past the "Starting Windows" splash screen -- it just freezes there.

I've heard that I should remove a stick of RAM (I have 2x2GB sticks...I heard it needs to be 3 GB or less...don't quote me on this) on install and insert it after...here's my system:

- Dual boot Windows Vista SP2 / Windows 7 7600.16385 (both x86, obviously)
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 5050e @ 2.6 GHz
- 4 GB DDR2 RAM @ 667 (I believe)
- NVIDIA 8600 GTS
- Ultra 500W PSU
- Hitachi 250 GB HDD / WD 640 GB HDD
- Acer Aspire M1100 desktop
- Acer F690GVM mobo w/ 10/10/2007 BIOS revision
- Acer X183H monitor

If anyone could help it'd be much appreciated. Please note I haven't tried removing a stick of RAM and installing yet; but if that's the only way let me know (I find that weird, but, hey, whatever works I guess).

Also, FWIW, Windows says I can run 64 bit (in the print scores section of the WEI).

Thanks!

I have an IBM Net Vista which crashed on me during a Winxp (Home Edition) recovery. It was a motherboard problem which IBM fixed. However my PC would not load XP completely and just froze when I booted. They are going to send me a recovery disk, but can not find one in Canada and are looking in the U.S. for one. My own "fix" was to put a Win XP Pro version on and finish the original Home Edition install from the I386 file. This worked (So far anyway) but I now have two O/S on my PC. How do I uninstall the Win XP Pro and also, will my Home Edition operate properly doing the install this way. I have tried installing Norton System Works 2003 but when I install, Win XP will not shut down. If I do a system restore everything is fine.
Any ideas on how I can get back to my original Home Edition O/S. I'm not sure when IBM will get me a recovery disk, but I need my computer up and running ASAP for my home business.
Any suggetsions on how I can install my original version of Win XP Home properly. I did not receive a Win XP disk with my computer (it was a pre-load) and the Win XP pro version should not be on my system.
Any suggetsions?

A:2 operating systems

unless you have a XP home cd, your not going to be able to repair it, just use XP pro untill HP get's off their butts and sends you your restore cd.. thats what is bad about these pre-loads, they save money because they don't have to buy CD's from microsoft, but the customer gets stuck with these P.O.S. restore CD's..

If I have two operating systems loaded on a computer, when I turn it on, will it automatically ask what operating system I want to use, will it not boot, or will it just pick one? Do I need a special program to get to choose what one I want?

A:If I Have Two Operating Systems...

If you've setup both OS's correctly, then yes.

For example:

If you wanted to have both Windows 98SE and Window XP on the same computer you would need to:
1. Partiton your hard drive into two or more logical drives
2. Install Windows 98SE on the first drive
3. Install Windows XP on the second drive

Now when you started up the computer, you would be presented with a menu from which you could choose your operating system. All major OS's (Windows, Linux, etc) come with their own bootloader (which presents the menu to you.

What OS's were you looking to install?

Not at the same time, but when it loads up I can choose which one I can run. I want one for my Pro Tools LE software and music only and other for everything else. One Hard Disk is using Sata cable and the other is using something that kind of looks like a ribbon. Is this possible to have the option to only load one at a time? Right now I keep opening my case and unplugging one on boot up.
Thank in advance!

Also i had forgotten to mention that at start up i am presented with two operating systems(is it the BIOS screen?) to select which operating system i want to start. The best way is to install 7 after XP as the other way round means that you will likely have problems with the bootloader
However with Ubuntu and if you are using grub as the boot, you should not encounter too many problems

Even learned how to build from scratch (which is really easy these days), but I have worn out my win98, winme, and winxp disks, without having back-up. I desperately need these operating systems, and was told some could be available for download, because they are available for people in classes. Can anyone send me links for these? My husband just purchased a slightly used computer - I know it is an HP, but the model # and everything are at home.

When I boot the computer up, it gives me the choice of selecting from 2 operating systems. XP Professional, and XP Home Edition. Somehow the XP Home Edition has been deleted, and the XP Professional is the only one loaded.

My problem is that XP Professional does not have the recovery options that I need.

Is there anyway for me to copy the HP files off of a "working" computer and run them on the "used" computer he bought? If so what files should I look for on our good HP?

Any advice is appreciated

Megan

A:2 Operating Systems

When you say "recovery options" I'm not sure what you mean. It has been my experience with HP that the operating systems are not interchageable as each is good for that specific computer only. They usually come with a restore disk with the OS and programs for that system.

They also sometimes have a seperate partition for restoring but I dont think copying from one computer to another will work. You may want to start fresh with the restore disk if you have it but I would wait to see if anyone with more experience than I has an opinion first.

From the moment I purchased my new laptop, it's been incredibly slow. It acts like there are multiple operating systems on it.. Is this possible? I'm a little suspicious about it.. It's almost like they made the computer with XP, then added Vista last minute on top of it.. or maybe vista is just ******.

Either way, my computer has been acting ridiculous lately, and I'm worried something has snuck onto it.

Also.. when it comes to getting rid of Vista.. is there an easy way to do that? Backing up files, uninstalling, etc.. I'm assuming no, but it doesn't hurt to ask...

A:please help me i have 2 operating systems

Choose either one, and just see if everything loads up fine.

The computer is dual booting with 2 versions of windows.

Now, one way is do a repair of windows and just rewrite the os files so you can run operating system, and keep your data.

The other way, if you have no copy of windows 2000, you can open your boot.ini file in C:\ and delete the extra line from the boot menu. This will tell windows that 2 versions of windows is not installed. But you must unhide protected os file. This is reccomended only for advanced users, So if you dont know how to unhide protected os files its probvably not even a good idea to try this fix.

Best of luck to ya.

to make an long story short, ive ended up with an operating system on my C drive and one on my E drive. I may have somehow forgot to partition C drive when I was doing a complete re-install of my xp home, sp2 operating system. When booting it gives me the option selecting which version, it lists two identical ones, but won't let me choose either, after 30 seconds continues on till blue screen. I've tried to re-format E drive but it tells me to close any windows utilities and try again, to no avail. Same with the C drive. I would just like to re-format both drives and start from scratch, which is a huge undertaking because I use my computer as a DAW and installing and authorizing is going to be a major headache. What can I do..................thanks, Dave

just insert your xp disk. When it gets to the screen where you select the drive/partition to install on, you can format both drives from there.

or you can boot to xp recovery console and format from there.

I have a Toshiba laptop. I reformatted it in December using the 2 disks that came with the computer. It has not worked properly since. It takes 3-5 minutes to start up and one of the games (zuma) that had worked before I reformatted is not working as well as before. I was told to just install another version of xp over the original. When we went to install xp it asked where we wanted it. It listed 3 partitions (when you go to my computer all it shows is C and D drives). Apparently we picked the wrong drive. Now I have 2 operating systems and I want to remove the new xp. Can anyone help me? If I reformat c drive using the right click on c drive and hit format will that wipe it of and can I then reinstall the original xp from the disks that came with the computer? Thanks John

Given your situation, you're probably better off reformatting the entire HDD. I'd make your disks that Toshiba might require (applications, drivers, recovery disks, basically the recovery partition on a disk) and then run an application that writes zeros (do it through a live linux, or download GWScan from gateway.com, those are the ways I know of, no gaurentee GWScan will work for you), and recover from Toshiba's media. If you can't get the recovery cd's from Toshiba's partition, call them. It might cost you.

Keep in mind that writing zeroes to your drive, or any recovery, makes it very hard to recover your data.

HI!

A while back I had wanted my computer basically formatted but didn't want to lose some of my music and files. A friend had thought he could do it by re-installing windows XP and copying over some files or something like that.

But what has happened is that now I have two Windows XPs running on my computer. When I start up the computer a black screen comes up that says this:

"Please select the operating system to start:"

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

How can I get rid of one of the operating systems??

A:Two operating systems

Ordinarily, they have been auto-formatted into two different partitions on the one hard drive. If you know you don't have two partitions, scroll to the bottom of this post and step 2 is there. If you do have two partitions, or you're not sure, complete step one.

1.Go to:

Control Panel > Performance and Maintenence > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

Now this part can get tricky. If you see only one parition then deleting it will obviously not work so scroll to the next step. If there is more than one partition read on. Do you have linux or another operating system installed on your computer? If so there may be more than 2 partitions. To distinguish Linux from Windows, look at the partition type. If the partition is NTFS then it is a Windows partition, if not recognised - a linux one. If not there will only be 2 and you now must distinguish which one you need to delete. Ordinarily you can't delete one of these because you are currently using it. Right click on the partition you wish to delete and press delete partition.

2. Now to get rid of the booting loader:

Control Panel > Performance and Maintenence > System

Then go to the Advanced Tab. There will be a startup and recovery box at the bottom of this screen. Click on settings, and then click on edit in the top box. There should be two Windows XP Home Edition options. Find the partition you just deleted and delete that line of coding. An alternative is to set t... Read more
