Unable to access windows and unable to re-install

Q: Unable to access windows and unable to re-install

Hey everyone,

My girlfriend has had her computer for well over a year now. Recently it's been crashing alot, mostly with the bluescreen, but on occasion just freezing.
Errorcode on bluescreen is: ***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)

Recently it has been impossible to enter windows, so we figured it'd be best to re-install windows. All we have is a windows XP CD, which is fine.

But when I put in the CD, it crashes with the same blue screen, I googled the errorcode and I found out that alot of people has had simmilar issues, and fixed it by going into BIOS and changing SATA mode from AHCI to IDE, but i cant find anything in BIOS that allows me to do so..

Here's a couple of the links I found on google, with suggestions on how to fix it.

Hard disk not detected [Solved]
Installing XP: ***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)? - Cyber Tech Help Support Forums
The computer is Acer

Preferred Solution: Unable to access windows and unable to re-install

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Unable to access windows and unable to re-install

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests (in your case, please start with the Hard Drive diagnostics). They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link) - Test ALL of the hard drives.
If you find hardware issues, here's a link to the hardware forums: Hardware Support - Tech Support Forum

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: Free Online AntiMalware Resources (read the details at the link)
There are also free, bootable antivirus disks at this link: Free Online AntiMalware Resources - Bootable Disks
If you find malware, here's a link on how to post in the Security Center: NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help - Tech Support Forum

hey guys I am trying to fix a friends computer for him by resetting it back to "out-of-the-box" settings and as I try to access the recovery partition by hitting F11 repeatedly on startup it comes up with just a blank page and no menus it just gets stuck and this is an HP laptop by the way and after that didn't work I was going to try and re-install Windows using my Flash Disk that I created and his product key, it would get stuck on setup is starting, I am really out of ideas on what to do what could possibly be the problem, I had this same issue with my old computer and it lasted only a day and then everything started working again

A:Unable to clean install Windows 7 or access recovery partition

If you cannot run HP System Recovery then your options are to try to make Recovery Disks, order Recovery Disks from HP Support, or do the superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7which provides everything needed to get and keep a perfect install.

The HP Factory install is the worst possible install one can have of Win7 with the worst load of bloatware in the industry, and Useless utilities that interfere with better versions built into Win7. You will never even experience native Win7 performance on that PC until it has a Clean Reinstall which is why no tech enthusiast will run the factory install.

I have recently done a clean Windows XP Install followed by installing Service Pack 1 then 3.

Everything was running smoothly and I was able to log into the desktop.

However when I tried to check for updates via Windows update, in Internet explorer however it always says the 'Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage'

After diagnosing the issue, it found no problems.

I can browse any other website but sometimes when I click on an item through doing a google search, it sometimes sends me to a random search engine page!!

I then installed spybot, fully updated it however it showed nothing in the scan results.

I think that my browser maybe hijacked because when I opened internet explorer today, a webpage immediately loaded up with the address:

Sometimes Eset Smart Security reports that addresses have been blocked and I have attached a screenshot of the message it displays.

I have attached a hijackthis log below.

Please reply

From first topic: Link is: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/271418/infected-unable-to-use-computer/ ~ OBI know I am infected, but unsure about where I would start. Basically:My computer was completely fine, my Monday evening regular virus/spyware searches turned up 0 results. Tuesday morning I went on the internet, got a few IE popups (even though I use Firefox). Decided to do a Malwarebytes scan and got over 750 infected objects infected. Let the scan finish and was told to restart computer, restarted and the problems started. I completely lost my desktop, no icons and no toolbar; a few more restarts and I managed to get them back but nothing else worked. Every program says I don't have the rights to access it or the computer has the resources to start.I can't access the internet and any scans I can run stop in the middle and give me the 'system resources' error.I'm not using that computer at the moment, since I'm completely unable to use it.Firstly I must ask, is is necessary to save the dds.scr and rootrepeal scanners directly to the desktop, or can they be moved there after being downloaded to another location? I can't access the internet on the infected computer so I will be unable to download them if they MUST be saved to the desktop. I have already managed to run a Win32kDiag scan (attached).Thank you for any help.

The message pops up "Registry editing has been disabled by your Administrator"
This is newly installed window as yesterday my old also got same message & all my apps/programs crashed, so i thought re-installing with complete formatting of window drive will solve my problem, but even on new window the problem remains.
I have tried almst every option available on net to enable my registry editing but none worked.
This issue is also not allowing to install Malwarebyte for any scan of malware etc.
Plz help me out.

If you formatted the hdd and installed Windows from a legit source then I would think....if malware is involved...either
an external drive or your router is reinfecting your computer.
What source for Windows are you using to install Windows?

Recently my computer has been progressively getting worse, or so it seems. At first all that I was limited on was going to a handful of sites that I tried (Facebook, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc...). Currently, I am having difficulties getting on more and more sites, sites that I had been recently able to get on. In my attempts to take care of the problem on my own I downloaded Malwarebytes, IObit Malwarefighter, and ran recovery manager to set my computer back to factory condition. I knew because I did the recovery that it was going to most likely not work so I saved files and documents I wanted to save on a thumb-drive. Malwarebytes and IObit claim to have found nothing but I can't seem to upgrade Malwarebytes as the program crashes when it scans for an update. Since I recovered my computer I cannot watch anything on Netflix (on any browser), and I still can't access any of the websites I was unable to. I went onto Wikihow and tried to reset my "hosts" file but it seems whatever I did could have just been more damaging than helpful, I am not quite sure. I am running Windows 7 as an operating system on an HP computer. I have looked at threads you have done or solved in the past and some of the solutions that worked for other posters did nothing to cure my problem. Thank you for reviewing my issue and if I need to post any more information to get things rolling just let me know.

Hello, I have recently been having issues with my computer following a nasty WoW account hack. After my account was hacked I have been unable to use Windows Update and get a connection error or no result. I have tried to follow the Microsoft help and none of their troubleshooting has helped. I have ran AVG scans multiple times as well as MBAM and sometimes find infections but have them removed. Currently neither show any infections. Rkill also finds nor terminates anything but C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe. Today I am unable to connect to the internet using IE7 or connect to many of my online games, but can connect via Firefox. Hi everyone - I have a beauty if anyone can help.

Story so far ( I'll try to keep it short )

had drive problems with PC so got new SSD drives and a Hybrid drive.
All new drives so did tortuous route install win7 - upgrade to win 8.0 all worked then started acting up. My tech support worked on it for 2 days and gave up said I should backup and do a clean install from start. So I did.
Not yet put any backup files on so only operating system and devices (printer, wireless keyboard/mouse, wireless headset and 3webcams ( One Pluscom and two PCline ) checked device manager and found cameras with yellow exclamation mark and checked properties and saw this webcam.JPG . Contacted my tech support again they gave up after 20 mins and guess what they suggested. gave appropriate answer which ended in off and went to Microsoft answer desk. After chatting for 1 hour 40 still no further other than some services which should have been running were not so he suggested starting services and check windows update. download, install and do a reboot and see what happens. If I would purchase a support plan from them then they would connect to my PC and troubleshoot and sort.

Not willing / able to pay $150 at moment so I have come to the REAL expert for some help.

I am obviously logged in as admin as I am the only user who Can use PC and checked permissions which are OK all users having full access.

Hoping someone has an idea before I go completely bald / mad ( as in do lally not angry )

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully.First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding.Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one.If you have any problems while you are follow my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem.Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.Post all Logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.Stay with me. I am trying to help a friend, but I am unable to run msconfig or regedit on Windows 2000. Install/Uninstall is not operable either. It's greyed out on all programs. I suspect that some system files are corrupt, but could there be any other reason? AVG virus scan found a Win32/Parite virus and fixed it.
Ran Spybot and Adaware in safe mode and fixed a bunch of spyware and a trojan which were successfully fixed. Microsoft Antispyware also found a variation of the same virus and fixed it. I would like to uninstall some old and unused programs and reduce the number of start up items but cannot access them via Start>Run>Msconfig>start up tab, and Start>Control Panel>Settings>Add/ Remove Programs. Hi all,

Recently my XP machine bite the dirt and on one of its IDE NTFS HD contained a few folders with hidden and encrypted files. Thinking this was a decent way to keep family members from touching my work, I never excepted them to become inaccessible after I installed Win 7 Pro 64bit.

My problem is that I am unable to open, or move any of the encrypted and hidden files within the folders, yet I am able to only copy the folders, but without the files contained within, as I receive permissions errors.

When I try to move one of the files, I get a File Access denied error stating "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy this file", I press continue, and I get another error "Your require permission from Administrators to make changes to this file".

My user account "Mark" is an Administrator within the Administrators group, and I have set User Acccount Control to it's default setting. I have also enabled the hidden default Administrator account, logged in as it, and receive the same errors. If it makes any difference, the username of my XP machine was PHOENIX/Administrator

When I view the file attributes, Read-only, and Hidden are not selected, but under Advanced "Encrypt Contents" is selected. If I click details, I receive an EFS error "Unable to find the user information for the file", and another window appears called User Access with all of its options grayed out.

Hi there,

My Lenovo Thinkpad laptop got infected by several pop-ups and unwanted programs over the course of the weekend. I launched Avast anti virus, which got rid of the pop ups, and I've manually deleted some of the programs (fake cleaners, etc.) I did not personally download during the time of attack.

I am currently running windows 10 (dumb enough to click the trial, duh)

The laptop is extremely slow now. I have problems accessing the internet from all major browsers (citing DNS errors on Microsoft Edge, Chrome and Opera). However I am able to access the internet using Avast's Safebrowse internet browser.

I have copied the FRST logs as per the rules.

I am running Windows XP Pro on a Dell Desktop.

The initial problems started when I installed Roxio Copy & Convert 3 for use with my PSP. I restarted after the install, utilized the program and then turned off the machine. The next morning I had an error message as I opened Windows that states:

"bcmwltry.exe - Ordinal Not Found
The ordinal 968 could not be located in the dynamic link library LIBEAY32.dll"

This error message does not go away no matter how many times you click 'OK'. I believed that I had found the root of this problem (bcmwltry.exe having to do with my Motorola Wireless Tray Applet). I disabled my wireless card since I am not currently using it, but the error message remained. I then decided to uninstall Roxio.

After uninstallation completed, I was asked to reboot the machine. I did so and that is when the rest of the problems started.

All of my .exe files were now non-recognized by Windows and would not run. I can right click on a program and select the open-with option and choose a program from that list, but if the appropriate program is not listed there, then I cannot run the program.

I then tried to do a system restore to see if that would make any difference.

Then all of the non-recognized files turned into Microsoft Excel files.

I am unable to install any program from the internet. Every time I try to download something, it automatically becomes a non-recognized file and prompts me to search the internet for the appropriate... Read more

I'm visiting a family member in Russia whose computer seems to have several Trojans, as well as a large number of adware and malware programs installed.

This also happens in safe mode.

When I tried running TDSSKiller, nothing happened. No windows opened.

When I tried running ESET online scanner, it tells me I'm not connected to the Internet.

Good morning,I have a system that has had numerous issues, mainly virus related. I have cleaned the system, and show no virus activity... but I'm still having issues.Late last week the system was stuck in a loop, it wouldn't boot to Windows at all (no safe mode, no normal mode). I resorted to a Windows repair from the install disk. It worked... to a certain degree. I am now able to get into Windows, but can not open IE and I can not install a display driver.I am unable to access Windows Update, but was able to set automatic updates to install lots of updates including SP3, but I am still unable to make any changes.Initially when I attempted to open IE I would get a window saying that IE had to close instantly. I attempted to reinstall IE, and I attempted to install a newer version of IE. Neither worked. If I chose to install the updates with the install I would get an access denied error, if I chose not to install the updates with the install it would look like it worked, but now when I click on IE I get "Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetcpl.cpl. The operating system cannot run %1"In device manager, I have no drivers installed on my display adapter. If I try to update it, it looks like it's going to install... but then I get "Cannot install the hardware. Access is Denied".Any assistance or insight into this would be appreciated.

A:Unable to access IE, access denied when updating display drivers, no windows update

On any system with a number of issues...it's often better to do a clean install to wipe the slate clean, rather than hope that you have patched all known and unknown issues, IMO.

Win 7x64
Everything seems to be working fine, but as the title suggests, when i tap F8 the Advanced boot options DO appear, but when i engage "Repair Windows" it just goes into a normal boot. Ive tried booting from my installation CD that i've purchased from Acer, but does nothing. And Yes My CD Drive is working, as well having this set as top priority in BIOS and CD is in good condition.

In addition to this, ive tried using the "Advanced Recovery options" from within Windows itself but when i go to click restart computer, i get an error message, with red-x, stating windows is unable to restart.

Additional info that may be relevant, is that a few months ago, i had a friend work on my computer, because windows wouldnt boot at all. When My laptop was returned to me, everything was fresh, but there was missing programs etc...He said, he had to format the hard drive to get it up and running again.

Anyway i appreciate any help as to what i should i do next, or answer any questions you may have-Thank-you!

HI, I just installed windows 2000 professional onto my computer. Everything works fine except that the resolution is really grainy. On some web sites I cannot even make out what the words are. I found out that when I go into my monitor settings in display properties I am unable to install the drivers for my monitor. Does anybody know a way in which I can get around this.

A:monitor drivers unable to install on fresh windows 2000 install

Are you really referring to the monitor drivers or the Dispay Adapter drivers? The symptoms you describe sound like the latter issue.

Monitor drivers are no big deal to install, and even if you don't, Windows should use compatible plug and play drivers. Still it's a good idea to install them -- but you get them from the Monitor vendor site. You get the Display Adapter drivers from the Display Adaptor vendor's site.

What Display Adapter model do you have? And are they properly installed?

To install a Monitor driver, you download and unzip the .inf file from the Vendor. Then you select "update driver" and browse to the location of the file you unzipped. Once installed your Monitor should be recognized by model number.

I recently did a clean install of Vista Home Premium x32 and upon completion am unable to connect to the internet. I received the following error: "windows unable to install ethernet controller." Upon accessing Device Manager, I noticed yellow exclamation marks associated with my network controller. I have an Acer Aspire 5536-5224 notebook. Windows could not locate the drivers on the machine and I cannot connect to locate. As a matter of fact, I'm not sure where to begin searching for the driver! I have Windows 8.1 preinstalled in my PC, and I've also installed Ubuntu 12.04. Firstly, when I installed it, it worked perfectly and I didn't have any problem running the two OS.
But, lately, this last week, it gave me some errors because I couldn't start Ubuntu, so I reinstalled it. The problem now is that when I try to access my Windows 8.1, it gives me this error:

Error: no boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.

When I enter my BIOS settings, it successfully shows the Windows Boot Manager under the boot menu options, but when I try to access it, it gives me that error. Also, I've tried to solve the problem with the Windows 8 recovery mode but it doesn't detect my OS...
I know my hard drive is working, because I can access to my Ubuntu and I can also access my Windows 8 files through Ubuntu.

I've found this guide but I'm not sure if it's what I have to do, is it?
If this could solve my problem, I'm stucked in the first step where I have to assign my EFI partition a drive letter, because I don't know which volume is my EFI partition.
I'll add a picture of my console view:
So, I would appreciate it a lot if you could help me because I really need to access my Windows 8.1 without losing any data...

My mama passed away recently (May 16th), and I brought her computer home to use for my school work. Someone signed into the Administrative / Owner name and somehow locked it. We don't have one of those password reset disk that the Windows website says. I have a disk that says "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition System Recovery CD/DVD"
I was told if I reinstalled Windows on the computer that it would erase the entire harddrive. There are alot of pictures on the computer, not to mention Microsoft Office, that I don't want to lose. My mom passed away suddenly and while I know her other passwords, this one is different which leads me to believe one of my younger cousins was messing with her computer and did something they didn't mean.
Is there anyway possible to reset the password and use the computer without losing all the pictures on it?
Thank you,

If the computer is password-protected and you have no way to log in and load the desktop to use it, your only real option is to use the recovery kit.

It's against the rules here anyway to assist with bypassing a password-protected computer.

As you've already found out, Microsoft doesn't make it easy for you either.

Well I got a big problem.

A couple days ago I noticed network connectivity issues. Random connection drops, overall bad connection, etc. I recently had some really bad malware and I removed it, so I suspected leftover malware from the start. I went to check Windows Update to see if I missed a security update, and it wasn't even on my computer. Something removed the service completely off my computer, so I found a .reg to fix it. I then started Windows Update and found that I had 30 updates missing and updated all of them successfully.

I then decided to see what was going on with my Windows Firewall, only to find that it was also removed. Wasn't in my services or anything. So I downloaded the .reg to fix that, tried to activate the service, only to run into another roadblock that I still haven't been able to fix, an error stating

"The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service on local computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs".

Ok. So I checked my services again and I believe that some more were completely missing(Base Filtering Engine, NSI proxy Service). So to try and remedy this, I attempted an sfc /scannow in elevated cmd prompt.

Then another brick wall. I get to 59% and then I get this message

"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".

Trustedinstaller service is turned on, so I have no idea why I'm getting this message. But... Read more

I cannot get windows to load the drivers for a Jabra UC Voice 550a MS Duo USB headset. Under Devices, Windows 7 shows lists this headset by name as an Unspecified device.  In device manager, Windows 7 lists this headset under "Other devices".
I called Jabra Support and they say this is a Windows problem.  It must be in configuration somewhere or related to several Windows Updates that occurred on my PC on Oct 2nd, 2014.  Prior to Oct 2nd, 2014, this headset worked and this headset still
works on other PCs.  Any help will be very much appreciated.

A:Windows 7 unable to recognize any USB communication headset. Unable to load driver.

Hi robh,
Do the other USB devices work correctly? Have you tried to plug in with another port?

I recommend you to follow these steps to have a fix.
Step1.Run this fix it tool  to have a check .
Hardware devices are not working or are not detected in Windows
Step 2.Reinstall the headset driver, you may need to manually download the headset driver from the manufacturer website and install the driver for this device.
Step 3.Uninstall and reinstall the USB controllers from the device manager and then plug in the headset  to have a check.

To do this :
In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" , click "OK", repeat for each device and restart . Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers
Meanwhile, here is a link for reference:

Here's what I'd do, Caveat Emptor & all that stuff...1. Run the FixIt in KB 971187 - How to fix MSI software update registration corruption issues http://support.microsoft.com/kb/9711872. Retry the Update(s).3. If the Update(s) fail(s), proceed to Step 4.4. Download .Net Cleanup Utility: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx5. By using the Cleanup Tool, uninstall all .Net Framework entries. (You will not be allowed to remove the .NET Framework 2.0 on Vista and 3.5 on Windows 7 because they are Operating System components.)6. Reboot.7. Download and install the .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 by clicking the link below (this will also install .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2):http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=AB99342F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7&displaylang=en8. -Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit Service Pack 1

Hello there, I've just built a new computer and am having trouble installing Windows updates on my fresh install.

When I go to Windows Update, I get the following message:

Install new Windows Update software

To check for updates, you must first install an update for Windows Update. Your automatic updating settings will not change

To install the update, Windows update will automatically close and re-open.

When I click 'Install now', the window disappears and I am then confronted with the following message:

Windows could not search for new updates

An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.

Error(s) found:
Code 800F081F Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Does anyone know how I can get updates to work? Is there some way that I can manually download and install this update for Windows Update?

Thank you.

A:Unable to install updates on fresh Windows 7 SP1 install

I'm guessing that your installation media already contained SP1, is that correct? Since this is a clean install my first thought is something happened during the installation process to damage or corrupt some system files. I'd try the Microsoft troubleshooter first.

Troubleshoot problems with installing updates - WindowsUpdate_dt000

If that doesn't work I'd try running the System Update Readiness Tool.

What is the System Update Readiness Tool?

If still no joy, and only because this is a very recent clean install, I'd just reinstall Windows 7 again. If the problem persists I'd start looking into the possibility of a bad installation disk, hardware issues, etc. Please post back if any of this helps or not.

The problem is that Windows Update will not run. When clicked from Internet Explorer Tools list the computer will display ?can not display page, do you want to diagnose connection problem? page.
Searching for ?Windows Update? in Google and clicking through to the site I get the same ?can not display page? message.
I was able to get to the Microsoft Support site, but Windows Update would not function.

In addition to that problem the computer seems to try to redirect the browser. The redirect seems to fail and an error message pops up that say can not find hppt://(the address that follows is a long string of gibberish). When I close the error window a new instance of the Internet explorer opens. I have a screen shot of the error message if that would be helpful.

I've got a DIY PC build I built a couple years back:
Intel i5 750
P55-G65 MB
2x2GB Gskill DDR3
Patriot 32GB SSD (this is my boot drive)
WD Black 500GB (just about everything else)

So my problem is lately I've been having some trouble accessing my files through Windows Explorer. It mostly boots fine, just a little slow from when I first installed the SSD. BIOS is able to recognize all my drives. I get into Windows and try clicking on anything on my desktop and the computer pauses for a few seconds almost as if it's thinking, then the desktop flashes, as if Windows Explorer just restarted and then it does nothing. It seems I can access Google Chrome, and Command Prompt from the start menu, as well as most of my other programs. No matter how I go about it however I cannot get to Windows Explorer, or look at my drives in anyway, except by typing drive letter into Chrome, but I would like better access than that. Also the desktop is constantly flashing as when I click on something, happens about once every couple minutes. I am currently running Trend Micro HouseCall and Malwarebytes, to see if that is that issue, but I'm guessing both will turn up negative. I did run sfc /scannow from DOS it said it found corrupt files but was unable to fix them. I tried repairing with Windows install disc before Windows booted and it said nothing to repair.

Hi guys,

I just finished installing windows 8 CP on my MacBook from late 2009. Previously it had windows 7 on it. The installation went smooth and all and I was able to install all my bootcamp drivers.

Currently I might be one of the only human beings on this planet who actually kinda enjoys the new metro interface but what the hell. Cutting the chase i'll just state my problem.

I am unable to access the shares on my windows 7 machine (acts as file server most of the time)

What I tested:
making sure I have connection:
- Ping hostname and ping IP both work
- A remote desktop connection can be made easily. (both on hostname and IP)
- Since I have quite heavy security on my shares normally I removed all share and NTFS security and currently have READ for all users on all folders.

I try to connect to my server trough explorer and also by using windows R so I get the "Run" box.
I tried connecting on IP and I tried to connect on hostname

\\server gives me NO maps at all and an error
\\server\drive$ again gives me nothing.

\\ip and \\ip\drive$ give me the same results.

I always gain the error:

logon failure: The user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.

Annyone knows what I can do please?

Hi, all !

I have been handed a PC to "sort out". It`s OS is XP Home.

The problem being, that when it is switched on, it brings up the following screen :

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

Start in safe mode.
Safe mode with networking.
Safe mode with command prompt.
Last known good configuration setting (most recent setting that worked).
Start Windows normally.
But whichever option you select, the computer simply reboots and brings up the above screen again.

Anyone know the best way to go about breaking this cycle ?

I started on this problem by opening an incident with Microsoft. Microsoft tried a few things and then suggested the possibility of virus/malware. Several days ago, Microsoft suggested uninstalling SP3. I did that to no avail. I since have reinstalled SP3 and the system should be current on Microsoft updates. Automatic Updates appears to be working. No symptoms have changed.

I moved to Bleeping Computer for virus/malware help. I have previous entries with this same title in 2 Bleeping Computer forums. I started in the Windows XP Home and Professional and then moved to the Am I Infected forum.

I observe 3 symptoms:

1) IE 7.0 is not recognized as a supported browser by the Windows Update website.

2) Doing a Google search with either IE 7.0 or FireFox 3.0.5 may yield links to questionable websites.

3) Attempting to open the System Restore tab on Systems Properties yields an error. This was a later discovery in the investigation process. There's a link to an image in the earlier posts.
