Basic XP Troubleshooting Tips

Q: Basic XP Troubleshooting Tips

Alright, I'm putting this up here because I've noticed almost everyone here posting troubleshooting issues here with little to no amplifing information. In order to correctly diagnose a problem every scrap of information reguarding it needs to be known, after all you wouldn't feel comfortable with a doctor diagnosing you with a brain tumor after looking at your toes would you?
Don't know where to find it or what will help folks narrow down what could be the problem?
Read on.......

Take note of what the error boxes say when they popup, they are important!

1st and best trick to troubleshooting ANY computer.
Turn your computer all the way off, and leave it that way for at least 30 seconds, this will allow the RAM to lose whatever it was holding and give you a chance to take a break. This honestly fixes more problems I've herd of than anything short of a sledgehammer. :hit:

2nd thing to do.
What did you change last before this problem started? Was it something you downloaded? Something you installed? New Hardware? Anything?
Uninstall whatever it is and see if that fixes it, if so you've nailed the problem.

3rd thing to do.
Check device manager for anything that has a '!' on the icon, be sure to click on "view" and "show hidden devices" to see everything that could be going wrong.
If you see one, double click on it and see what Micro$oft has to say about it through their help and support section.

4th thing to do
Check event viewer, the godsend from Micro$oft. Click on the start button, then run, and type in "eventvwr" without the quotes. Event viewer will have three sections, appliacation, security, and system. Check all of them for errors (should be a red circle with a white "x" in it). Take note of them and what they say, also this is normaly where most of the errors your computer spits out show up.

Try, and look at, these things. You will thank yourself later.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a desktop running xppro with a wireless card, connecting to a router, that connects to the internet. Internet connection works great.

I have a lan port that I want to connect to a second router. Of course, it is currently set as DHCP, as its main address.

So when I try to set up ICS, I get the expected errors. I do not know how to set up the second router and my computer to get ICS working. I would appreciate some basic instructions please. Thank you.

This is going to sound odd, but I had an old couple I know approach me and ask to teach them basic computer tasks. Now, I have no problem and I know how to do a crap load of stuff, but things that are basic to me may not be basic to them.

They specifically asked for getting photos off of a USB drive, and uploading photos to Facebook. But they want to know more but they don't know exactly what (which is understandable).

Any ideas as to other tasks I could show them? I don't know how little their knowledge of it all is, so picking basic tasks might turn out to be too basic, or might turn out to be advanced for them. Who knows.

A:Basic Computer Tips

I do a little of that from time to time . . I start with the mouse . . teach them how the left and right clicks work and what they can do. After that, how to use the internet, email and how to download and manage their photos.

That is usually enought to get them going . . some will pick it up and learn on their own and others will give up in frustration.

I am not a good "teacher", but patience and understanding will go a long way

Re: 1) "Safely Remove Hardware" assures you that nothing is being written to the drive and it is safe to remove the drive without losing or corrupting data. It does not power off the drive however.
The drive is powered through the USB cable. If you unplug the USB cable after getting the "Safe To Remove" message then the drive will power down.

RE: 2) I never install the software on these external drives. There is no need of it as far as I can tell. Windows can do everything you need. Keep in mind that "I never install this software", so if there is anything of benefit in there, I would not know.
If there is a Disk Imaging program, or a Hard Drive Diagnostics program on the drive I might safe those program installer files in a folder somewhere so I could install them later if necessary.

RE:3) Yes. Provided the "Safe To Remove" message has been displayed.

RE: 4) This I do not know. My external drives do not have power buttons.
This behavior could be by design (to prevent accidental disconnection, or something else.) Does it delay if the "Safe to Remove" has been displayed?

Not sure about dotnetframework35. I sounds similar to Microsoft program installer package " .NET Framework 3.5 " , which should be on your computer already through Windows Update.
I think you could safely delete that folder without any consequence.

So far I have done this and it did not help:

1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All
Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run
as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a
confirmation, type the password, or click Allow/Continue.

2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow
(The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces
incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.)

FYI, She gets the message when trying to launch the Second Life Phoenix Viewer, however Second Lifes Viewer 2 loads without error.

I am going to perform a CHKDSK on her Lenovo as recommended in an archived thread from this forum and hopefully that will solve the issue. Can anybody think of anything else?

My machine has been experiencing intermittent BSODing over the last few weeks and I wonder if you could give me a hand troubleshooting it? I'll summarise what i've done so far. It's not given me anything today, as I say, it's intermittent.

System Info:
Processor Name: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz
Processor Information: Intel64 Family 6 Model 60 Stepping 3
Graphics Information: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti
Mobo: Z87I-PRO
System BIOS: 0903
Installed System Memory: 16 GB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (originally installed on system)
Age of system: 1 year, 1 month
OS Reinstalls: None
This is a desktop PC
System Manufacturer: Purchased from ChillBlast
Troubleshooting so far:
* Checked EventViewer for after the crashes. The only useful thing showing is that the Kernel service is shutting down - which I suppose it would if power to it was interrupted.
* Opened up case to check components. Everything seated well. Extremely tidy cabling (if I may say so myself; nothing getting in any fan's way).
* Ran GPU stress test - all fine.
* Ran Processor stress test - all fine
* Ran driver verifier (ran for about 20 minutes) and nothing crashed.

Attached Files:
* PerfmonReport
* Your app collection dump
* IPDT Processor Test results

Appreciate your support :)

I recently purchased a new laptop running Windows 7.  On setup, I was pleased to find that it connected to my home network without much complaint.  However, I soon noticed a misstep -- after putting my laptop to sleep, upon waking, it
would consistently fail to connect to network.
I've tried disabling IP Helper, as well as the wireless adapter's IPv6 protocola
la advice on other forums.  I've also ensured that the driver settings do not allow for disabling to save power.  Seeing that none of these worked, I decided uninstall and delete the driver and install a newer version (in a related issue,
the driver update feature failed to detect the existence of a newer version -- why?).
This appears to have fixed the connection issue.  However, still, after sleeping the laptop and waking, although it connects to the router, I still need to reset the IP command-line via ipconfig /release + /renew.
I was running Vista on my previous machine, and I know that its Network Diagnostic tool would, when presenting solutions, frequently suggest that my computer had the wrong IP and that I should reset it.  I was hoping throughout this process
that the Network Diagnostic troubleshooter would present a similar option.  Instead, however, no matter what I do with my wireless, the troubleshooter only ever returns the message "Troubleshooter couldn't identify any problems."  Whether or not
I check the box for auto-repair or run ... Read more

A:Troubleshooting the Network Troubleshooting Utility / After-Sleep Connection Problems

To avoid confusion Let us focus on the first issue within this thread first.
Can you access internet when connecting the laptop directly via cable?
Where did you download the newer version of network card driver? Usually, the “driver update” feature from device manager will go to Microsoft update catalog website for the corresponding driver instead of the manufacture’s website. AT
this point, I would suggest install the latest driver
here. Please note: Microsoft don't write drivers, for any driver related issue, the OEM is always the best resource to turn to. Your understanding is appreciated.
As a workaround, you can prevent the network card from sleeping by the following method:
Open Device manager->expand Network adapter-> right click on the wireless adapter->Properties->under Power Management tab, uncheck the box before “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.
Is anything unclear, please feel free to post back.

Hi everyone,

I've been trying to get my feet wet in creating a .vbs file from notepad to do a basic function. I wanted to be able to run .reg files remotely but also interactively. This led me down the path of simply finding an example of a .vbs that would open anything remotely at all. Notepad is what came up with the most results and the Win32_ScheduledJob object appeared to be what was needed.

I researched many different places but this is a decent walkthrough. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa394601(v=vs.85).aspx

I grabbed the code below out of the website and changed the date parameters to run in a couple minutes from my current time. I could see the task in scheduled tasks but when the time had come and gone nothing would happen and this is just trying to get it to run locally so far.

I guess my question can be asked in two ways, the short way and the long way.

Here's the short one:

Can you do everything that you can do with VBA with VB?
The long one is:

I need to be able to write programs that conceivably invovle web forms/web services (VB right?), Microsoft SQL Server 2002 (VB again right?) but also Microsft Office applications like Excel and Access (VBA??). Does that mean I need to learn both Visual Basic and Visual Basic for Applications? In my initial research into Visual Basic I've learned that Visual Basic for Applications is a subset of Visual Basic, so shouldn't that mean that Visual Basic, being the parent and more powerful than Visual Basic for Applications, is capable of performing all of the functions that Visual Basic for Applications does?

Thanks for your help,
([email protected])

A:Solved: Visual Basic vs. Visual Basic for Applications

I do not know VB at all, only some VBA. The main difference is that VBA has words specifically for the applications, a classic exanple would be the
both range and .End(xlUp) are for use in Excel.

I moved this to the hardware forum. It could go in either hw or the windows 2k, nt, xp forum. Since you asked about the drives, I put it in hw.

You would need to jumper the 60gig as the master and the 20gig as the slave drive. When you do the install, your 60 would then be your system or C drive.

Since your 20gig has an os already, I would have that drive disconnected during the install or you will end up with a boot menu. Once you have the os installed, you can shutdown and reconnect the drive.

That an HP? If so they are known for being loaded with bloatware, so you'll want to first go to msconfig>Startup and turn off everything except your AV and gadgets/stikynotes if u use them at startup. Troubleshooting with MSCONFIG

HP has a connection manager that slows your system and startup (like most bloatware) so turn it off and set up your connection in the bottom right system tray.

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials with the Win7 Firewall. Uninstall the bloated AV that came with your HP using Revo Uninstaller: Use Advanced mode, it will set a restore point and run Windows uninstaller, don't restart at prompt but click Next to Delete all the bolded Reg keys and files it leaves behind.

Follow this same procedure for all the bloatware you don't want, after you decide.

Bloatware can corrupt Win7 even by its uninstall so periodically run SFC -SCANNOW Command - System File Checker to repair system files and see if any have corrupted requiring a Repair Install or clean reinstall.

Most makers no longer include OS DVD so they can enforce the bloatware which provides most of their profit margin (exception: Business computers). This causes tech enthusiasts to locate a clean-copy installer for their version or unlock all versions in any retail installer, to clean reinstall using the Product Key on COA sticker affixed to computer. As a virus magnet I have spent many days without my PC. Instead of binning my old PC on getting a better one I hung onto it. It allows me to at least ask questions to help me fix my normal one.

I had a quick shuftie at the BIOS settings whilst the machine was working well.
Made notes as to what they were.
Sometimes nasties can alter basic settings but if I know what they should be then it gives me slightly more confidence in making alterations.

Beyond that, leave it be and enjoy a faster PC.

Okay, so recently I built a system with some pretty nice stuff. I ordered all of it from newegg.com, as I'm sure most of you are familiar with.

The build looks something like this...

CPU: AMD Phenom II Deneb X4 940 (3.0 Ghz)
Video: Radeon HD 1950
Sound: Creative Soundblaster Audigy SE
Mobo: ASUS M3A79T-Deluxe
Memory: 4GB OCZ Platinum DDR2 1066Mhz
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit

Anyway, I booted the computer, ran fine and everything, when I noticed the video quality was poor. After some contemplation, I realized I had placed the card into a PCI-E x1 slot, instead of x16. Upon replacing the card in the proper slot, the video had gone out. I suspect the card received ESD sometime during the transfer, but I'm not totally sure it was the card.

EDIT: The card was originally running in a PCI-E x16 slot, but the mobo runs it as a x1 slot.

My brother recently sent me is old Radeon HD 4850, but unfortunately, it is missing somewhere in the postal service.

Is there any way that I can tell if my card has received ESD or if it's a mobo/processor problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a pic: (click to maximize)

Your card can't fit into a PCI-E x1 slot

Anyway the best way to test is by installing another card
Or possibly downloading a Motherboard diagnostic tool from your motherboard's support website (if the tool exists)

I'm helping a friend repair his PC, but I've tried pretty much all I can think of.

So far I've ran CHKDSK /R /P, the results of which were no errors...

His description is that it runs a CHKDSK, then tries to boot, but never does. Same goes for Safe Mode, Run Last Good Config. It just freezes on spot.

It's almost as if it is stuck performing CHKDSK, but never actually completing it. (Aside from the Recovery Console) It completes it, but leaves me at the end message: "Windows has made corrections to the file system."

"Various data storage numbers ...

And a single period at the very end, and that's where it freezes.

He doesn't want me deleting any data on his hard-drive either.

Any further suggestions I can try?

Oh, I've also tried testing the memory modules, tested to see if it had sufficient power (Removed the CD ROM power, etc), all checked out fine.

I was actually considering taking a backup of his entire disk, formatting in NTFS, installing XP again, and transferring any remaining data needed back. I don't have his reinstallation disk, but I do have his serial key. I was wondering if I can use the CD I used for my own XP Home installation, except using his serial key (Since it's located on the case.)

If that's at all possible, please let me know what steps I should take. Or, even, I could do a 'Repair Install'?

Check that your Intel Rapid Storage driver is up to date, then look in services to see if the Diagnostic Service Host is running.

My computer has problems running IE, it is very slow and freezes a lot. The toolbar also freezes, i usually bring up task manager to un- freeze or speed up the waiting process. I downloaded firefox browser, but this runs even slower. I have a wireless cable internet connection, so internet speed shouldnt be a problem... This is why i decided to come to the site for help.. I went through, step by step, in your "read this before posting a log," and downloaded dds and saved both files. I then downloaded RR, and proceeded to run the program. As soon as it tried to "run," the screen turned black and then immediatley went to a Blue screen error. I couldn't really read what it said, but i did get "irq_not_less_not_equal" out of the quick glance(the blue screen was only up for about 2 seconds before computer restarted.) After computer restarted, i tried running RR again, with the same exact result. The computer is a E-machines model: w2047- Here is the DDS log file:

My girlfriend has a Sony VAIO pc. She has recently started having difficulty in browsing. We have checked for virus & spyware... called her isp & had them check her connection speed and still she is having problems. There is a serious lag between everything she does & the response time. At pcpitstop she was told she needed to possible defrag . She just did that yesterday.
She is on dialup but this is sam as it has been & the pc performance has deterioated.
pcpitstop results...

Drive C has an uncached speed of 1.73 megabytes per second.

Drive D has an uncached speed of 2.45 megabytes per second.

For comparison, systems with the same CPU, clock speed, and memory size as this one have an average uncached speed of 5.25 MB/s .

I know nothing about XP & Im somewhat limited to be able to help her.
Cache & other clean ups have been performed as well.

Thanking you in advance for any help you may give us.

btw........ she has the telephone company coming out to do a check of her data on her phone line on Friday.

Hello. This is my first time to post a thread here at Techguy.org so I hope this site would make a good impression for me. I am
currently studying IT so this techie forum stuff would soon come in handy. I would just like to know why does each time I troubleshoot my netbook device (Acer Aspire One 722) under Devices and Printers it fails to install and fix itself. The devices are
microsoft teredo tunneling adapter and the microsoft ISATAP adapters (1,2 and 3). First of all what are these devices and their importance and how to troubleshoot it manually. Then is there anything I can do to Prevent this, an exclamation mark next to my device is for me irritating to see. . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One more thing. Is it safe to uninstall it?? How about reinstalling it after that??

My sister had a major power surge in her home recently, and her computer seems to have been damaged. I have been trying to help her get it running again. I know her power supply was blown and was hoping the damage did not reach the motherboard or other components. I tested it to make sure. We have the new supply (after a fiasco with Gateway). I installed it last night, but her computer still won't boot. I am now trying to find the faulty part(s).

Her monitor works fine. Her CD-Rom also opens and closes when power is on. All internal & external cables are correctly plugged in. One thing I noticed is that the new power supply fan DOES NOT spin at all. It's connector is properly connected to the motherboard.

Also, her floppy drive light NEVER goes on when powering up. The cable is NOT reversed and power is properly connected. Is this drive dead?

I cannot tell if the HDD spins either. What should I look for?

How can I tell if her motherboard or processor is indeed fried?

I am going over tonight with bootable floppies, etc to see if I can get anything going; however, if the floppy is dead......no luck. I will also try to put in the XP CD to see if that will boot.

Any other suggestions?

She runs XP Pro on a Pentium III 800Mhz cpu. Not sure model or make of motherboard. She has 384MB RAM. (not sure if that is dead either)

Thank You All!

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Did you ininstall the current anti-virus program before installing Norton ? Running 2 anti virus programs can cause system slow downs/instability and conflicts.

Try booting into Safe Mode and using System Restore. If you have no luck you may be able to do a repair install. If it is that ifested with spyware the easiest way out is a reformat and install.

If you get the system back up, follow these steps to removing spyware/malware.
