Copied flash to harddrive, and Cannot save edited file in folder.

Q: Copied flash to harddrive, and Cannot save edited file in folder.

I have Windows 7.
i copy entire flash drive to a folder (Call it "RemovableDrive" folder under My Document) from flash drive (USB).

In "RemovableDrive", folder, I right click and select Properties, then I uncheck READ ONLY, and select Apply to set all files and folder/subfolders to uncheck READ ONLY.

In the "RemovableDrive" folder, I opened a file, and edit it. Then I try to save it.
it would not let me. I also set the property of the file to READ ONLY, but still has the same problem.

What is the problem?
I have administrator privileges.

Preferred Solution: Copied flash to harddrive, and Cannot save edited file in folder.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Copied flash to harddrive, and Cannot save edited file in folder.

What you did was to clear the Read Only attributes for this folder, sub folders and files. In FAT32 this is enough.

But in NTFS file system, you have to check the file permissions along with the ownership also for the folder.

To check the file permissions, right click on your flash folder in My Documents, select Properties - Security Tab.

Here under your username check the file permissions. Do you have full control?

Click on Advanced - Owner tab and press Edit button. Now select your username and put a check mark on Replace owner on subcontainers and objects and press OK button twice to return to the folder Properties dialog box.

Now click Advanced button, and make sure your username has full control permissions. If not click on Change Permissions and remove the tick mark on include inheritable permissions from this object's parent. Click Add button on the opened dialog box. Select your username and press Edit button. In the opened dialog box, put a check mark on Allow at full control, select Apply to this folder, sub folder and files. Keep another check mark on Apply permissons.... in the bottom of the screen and finally press OK button. Now close all the dialog boxes.

This should now allow you to edit any files in the folder.

A folder with a .txt file that was just edited or created, saved and closed, going up one level to rename the folder, I get the dreaded;
"The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program."

I can use Unlocker (a wonderful program) to do so, but that should be unnecessary. If I close the Explorer window and reopen it, I can rename the folder.

This seems to be related to that cached thumbnail long standing problem which doesn't seem to be fixed according to all the topics I have seen. But, that seems to apply to deleting files, not renaming folder where the file exists.

I always use the 'details' view in Explorer and thumbnails are turned off.

Ideas??

A:Can not rename folder that has a text file that was just edited

I have no idea if this will work but it shouldn't hurt anything. UpdateEnv I wrote to do things like flush the Registry changes to disk without logoff. It simply calls the AutoIt built in function EnvUpdate() 3 times. When Explorer is hanging onto something it may not work. But it would only take a short time to find out.

I bought a 32-bit Windows 7 computer because it evidently will be the last build to run WordStar, which I have used for more than twenty years and can't imagine life without. As I had done with my Windows XP and Vista machines, I simply copied my two basic folders (C:\WS containing the system files and C:\ONLINE containing all my document and non-document files) to the new machine.

Alas, I can open any WS file, and I can create a new file and save it. But if I edit an existing file, I can't save it. When I look at the directory with Power Desk (replacement for Windows Explorer) I notice that though all other folders are named in black font, the two WordStar are blue, and they have a small padlock showing. They are the only locked folders.

I have given the whole world permission to use these folders: MYNAME, EVERYONE, and ADMINISTRATOR (whatever the title).

The save-edited-file problem may not be caused only (or at all) by the permissions, because while I can "change directory" in WS to a thumb drive in the USB slot, and can open or create a file in the thumb drive, I can't save an edited file there, either. And E:\THUMBDRIVE does not show up as blue or with a lock.

Can anyone suggest a way out? Otherwise I am stuck with my fairly ancient XP box, and I'm not sure how long it's going to last....

A:Can't saved an edited WordStar file (folder locked?)

Wordstar - my gosh. Talk about a voice from the past. It was great in its day, but I could never keep track of all that Ctl-K Ctl-Q stuff. It never occurred to me that it might still be working.

At any rate, try this to get control of your locked folders: Take Ownership Shortcut

That option has worked for me in many similar situations.

PS: I too used PowerDesk for many years but have recently switched to FreeCommander XE because Powerdesk 8.5 (and perhaps earlier versions as well) has a bad bug: If you try to copy a folder from one drive to another PowerDesk moves the folder instead of copying it. So after it's done the original folder and all it's contents are simply gone.

I have only just noticed that when I drag a file to a different folder on the same drive, it does not *MOVE* but gets COPIED!!

So it's behaving as if it were being moved to a separate drive.

No wonder I'm using disk space so quickly - I'm doubling up on everything!

Is there somewhere I can change the settings please, so dragging files only moves them; and doesn't copy them?

Thanks a lot

Hi
I have Outlook 365 on my desktop for emails , calendars and contacts
I use Icloud for Windows to sync my Calendar and Contacts from iphone to desktop or from desktop to iphone.
Was seamless until a few days ago when trying to edit a contact on Outlook it would not allow me to save it
Error message was "Your changes cannot be saved because you don't have permission to modify some or all of the items in this folder. Do you want to save a copy of the item in the default
folder for the item?
I can edit the contact on iphone and it updates though to Outlook on desktop.
Calendar appointments (new and amended/edited) are seamlessly working both ways.
A new contact inputted onto Outlook icloud contact will save but if you then try to add a new number or note then get the above error message.
Please advise

Hi, all,

I recently got a new computer with Windows7, coming from a Windows XP system.

I would like to find a solution to an annoying Windows 7 behavior (after a thorough session of Googling)...

When I copy/paste a file on my desktop into a folder located elsewhere on my desktop, the copied file's icon moves so that it is located where the folder icon was, and the folder jumps down so that it ends up below the file icon.

To clarify - I often work with several files at a time, making modifications to each one. To keep track of the files I've modified, I arrange them in groups on my desktop. Often I will want to transfer the modified files to my other computer. I usually create a temporary folder on the desktop to hold copies of the modified files.

If I right-click a file (or group of files), select copy, then right-click the folder and select paste, the file is copied into the folder as expected, but the icons for the copied files physically move across the desktop to end up immediately above receiving folder, which drops down to the "grid" position below.

If the receiving folder is not isolated (that is, it's surrounded by other icons), the file and folder both move to a location that allows the copied file's icon to be located above (or sometimes below) the folder.

Is this normal behavior for Windows 7?

Is it possible to "fix" the system so that copied files "stay put"?

Thanks!

A:Annoyance: file copied to folder on desktop moves!

In short - files don't really belong on the desktop.

have an extremely weird problem occuring nowadays. i'm not sure why, but somehow my copy/paste function is now semi 'hard-linked' to my downloads folder. i'll try to explain it here.

Downloads folder : F:\Downloads
which contains a bunch of random files and folders.

Let's say I choose to copy 2013.docx from C:\ to E:\, now it copies the ENTIRE Downloads folder together with 2013.docx to E:.

This doesn't happen all the time, but MOST of the time it does and it irritates me - because i have to delete the redundant copy of my Downloads folder.

sure, i might be able to get away with it by renaming the Downloads folder, but i want to understand WHY it happens and HOW i can prevent it in the future.

thanks!

Firstly, my employee's are running into a problem where they cant save their files because the file is "in use" according to windows 7.

What i've narrowed it down to is the fact that windows uses the files to display details or even a preview of the file whether it be a thumbnail or a window pane preview of the file or even simple details barring it from saving the file after it is opened, edited, and ready to be saved.

I have disabled all the obvious frills that might be conflicting such as: "file previews, show thumbnails etc." just cant quite get this resolved.

Also, windows 7 and its short term memory loss wont allow some of my employees to save their favorite folder views (I understand that windows 7 tried to implement a more functional window mode, allowing users to have multiple view for their different folders) but the "pick one and stick with it option" of "Apply to all folders" the obvious approach doesnt work. Or merely works for a few days then reverts. I've seen regedits about changing the "bag size" and such but that looks a little more involved than i want to get with the registry, also potentially affecting something in the process.

Any tips?

On my work computer (Windows 7 Enterprise), I've noticed a very strange and troublesome bug appears when navigating the Save-As directory.  The usual Google searches are utterly fruitless and bloated with far-off tangents completely unrelated to this
issue... and a search of this forum and help library are equally helpless, so I thought I'd try a more direct approach.

I use custom shortcuts to zip through my folder hierarchies (my personal way of organizing stuff, since I use tons of folders).  I simply ctrl+C (copy) the folder I want to link to, then right-click and pick "paste shortcut", to make my
little quick-link.  That's what I mean by "shortcut" henceforth (nothing to do with keyboard shortcuts).
So, in any program (for example, AutoCAD 2013), pick "Save As..." and the standard browsing dialogue box opens up.  Normal behavior is opening a folder to save the file in it, or going up a level.  No problem.
The issue happens when clicking through one of those shortcuts I mentioned above.  When you do this, Win7 inexplicably (and very annoyingly) changes the existing SaveAs filename (default, or one you entered) to the name of that shortcut instead, destroying
the original filename in the process.
An example: create a folder in your My Documents, then a shortcut for it (as explain above).  Now try saving an image from Wikipedia or something, into that folder you just created.  If you get th... Read more

A:Windows 7 Enterprise bug - file save-as renames a file if passing through a folder shortcut

Hi,
I have followed the example you mentioned to save a picture to the folder shortcut, and the name won't change to the shortcut. Also the picture would be saved into the original folder.
Here is the steps I did:
1. Create a folder named New folder in My documents:
2. Select it and then press ctrl + C and right-click on destop choose paste shortcut(named New folder-Shortcut);
3. Right-click on a picture in one webpage then open the save picture as dialog box;
4. Navigate to the desktop folder shortcut and double-click into it, the file name field won't change;
5. My machine is Windows 7 Enterprise SP1.
Would you please tell some more details on how you saved the picture?
In addition, there might be some other applications triggered this action, we may take a look with process monitor:
The download link here:

And here is a blog talking about how to use it:

Hi,
I hope this is the correct place to ask. I have spent the day editing a document which i stupidly just opened from an email attachment in my hotmail account and proceeded to edit. I diligently saved it throughout the day but did not use the save as function.

I have tried to open a similar document and choose save as to see where the document would have saved but this does not seem to work in Windows 7. I have tried looking in my 'temp' folder but this is empty.

Does anyone know how else I could retrieve this document? It is the only version i have...i really ought to have looked after it better!

No problem this is an easy one.

Go to search type in back up and restore Pick a date prior to your problem. And then like magic, everything is back the way it was when life was good. This will affect all your personal documents, but not system settings.

but first try this one. Go to search pick a phrase that is in your document and it should appear.

When I get to the desktop screen now off SSD, I look on the SSD hard drive, which is now C: and WD is now D:
I copy folder from WD on D: to SSD on C:

I think wat you are saying is that when you click to download something you cant choose if you want to save it or if you want to just open it. If this is so, follow these steps.
1. Open My computer
2. Control Panel
3. Folder Options
4. Click File Types tab
5. Select the file extension you wish to be able to safe (Example: .zip, .exe, .rar, etc)
6. Click advanced button

You will have to do this for every file extension that you need it to be done for, but only once. I hope this helps

Hello all. Not a regular user of Excel; but do need help in creating something that would be useful to me and a few others at work. I suppose the best way of explaining what I'm after is by giving an example.

I have a directory C:\Users\Tekko\Desktop\Maintenance Project\Cape Nelson
In Cape Nelson are a number of folders named alpha beta charlie delta echo and foxtrot and so on.

I would like to have an excel template in "Cape Nelson" with a macro that when activated names the file as whatever folder name might be in say cell A1 and whatever ever date might be in cell B1. Eg charlie_15-mar-2013.xls
This then is saved in the relevant folder. So in the end I would end up with
C:\Users\Tekko\Desktop\Maintenance Project\Cape Nelson\charlie\charlie_15-mar-2013.xls

Also the macro script would ensure that the macro was disabled in the saved file.

Hoping this is achievable and look forward to replies.

Hello... is there any way to prepare a flash drive so that if any content has been copied from it I will be able to know it? For that matter could I set it up in such a way that I would know if someone has imaged the whole drive?

Thanks.

I'm using Windows 10 Core i5 and recently i just bought a 2tb flash drive so the drive is brand new and I haven't put anything yet. I've copied and pasted some files from my pc into the drive but when i tried opening it turns out to be nothing and i noticed
soon as the files got copied in the drive the size turned to 0 bytes?? Size shouldn't be a problem here since the drive has 2tb storage. idk if the problem lies in my pc or the drive itself. is there a way to fix this?

I need to edit a document in PDF and I know PDF wont allow that. Isn't there a way to save it as a different type of file or do something where i can than edit it? I have not figured out if there is a way how to do that.

this is the first draft of some rules revision for my industry and it is 116 pages long so it is not very practical to just retype it. It will make it easier if i can find a way to treat it like a Word document where i can highlight, edit, delete etc.

any ideas??

Thanks

A:Solved: files remotely copied from my flash drive?

You can't.

EDIT: Also, you posted in the wrong section(hardware), I'll move this to General Security as it's probably better suited there.

Now nothing is found except for Spybot keeps finding several items that are blocking the hosts file from being changed. When I try and run a Hi jack this report, it says that the hosts file is locked and can not open it. Below is the Hijack this log while in windows safe mode but the hosts file isn't scanned.

Hi....

I am desperately needing help now...

My external hard-disk which contains 3 partitions. In one particular drive, there are a few hundred .TIF images inside. I created 4 new folders to copy the images into so as to better organize them. After that, I realize I can no longer open the images! They are still there, and their file sizes are stated clearly.

There's a message saying "Access ia denied. Make sure the disk i not write protected or file is not being used". Clearly, the disk cannot be write-protected and the file is not used at all.

When I tried to connect the hard-disk to my laptop, I cannot even access the files as it says "Access is denied".

I tried with other documents such as Word file and it also happens. As long as files are being moved from one folder to another within the same drive/partition, the file will no longer be able to open. It's like a black hole there. The other 2 partitions have no issues.

This is very strange and frustrating. I've never encountered this before. Is there a bug somewhere? Could anyone kindly offer me some solution to my problem? All my precious images can't be opened now!

Thank you very much!

A:Files won't open after being copied to a new folder!

Security Permission issue http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/security/permissions.mspx

Right click the folder you want to open and choose Properties>Security. Make sure their is a group named "Everyone". If not click Add>Advanced>"Find Now" and choose everyone. Click OK and you should no longer get those nasty Access Denied messages. (refer to the above link to allow specifically your user account to access the old Hard Drive folders)

Note: in Windows Xp Home, the "Security" menu will not show. Just start your computer in Safe Mode (continuously press F8 function key on computer Startup then select Safe Mode)
Also confirm that you are running an Administrator privileged account. (Check Users in Control Panel)

If you right click properties of both the paste file and original file and compare both of the file size shown there, if both are the same does it mean that the paste file is properly copy over?

Did you copy/paste the file itself or just its contents?

If you did copy/paste the file itself it's the same as a "file copy". If there is an error it's reported on the screen! There are many checking mechanisms on disk like CRC check for example (google yourself). And drive firmware itself can check if write was succesfull.

You have to trust win7 or the program that copies.... you can't check if 1000's of files are copied succesfull manually.
