CLR error 80004005, error 0x800106ba, windows problem reporting has stopped working

Q: CLR error 80004005, error 0x800106ba, windows problem reporting has stopped working

I get all those messages at start up, plus superfetch has stopped working, and sometimes windows explorer has stopped working. I know it's some type of virus from something. So far safe mode has been working (slowly). Yesterday I had a friend reinstall(?) vista on it so I'm not sure if it would qualify as a legal copy or not anymore but it was actually much worse before that. It couldn't even start up right normal or safe mode.

it is a hp G60t-200, and the OS is vista, I'm not sure what other info would be needed for this. Please help if you can.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Service shows WerSrv stopped. Should it be set to Automatic? Is it possible that another program like Advanced System Care shut it down?

A:Windows 8.1 Error Reporting stopped

ASC does not stop/dissable this program automatically.
It is part of User account Control >> Maintainance >> settings >> problem report settings
and depending upon which level you have set, it will stop it, or if you have modified your registry to totally stop it the service will be dissabled.

I get the following message after every boot up at the desktop, “Windows problem reporting has stopped working”

The computer is a Dell XPS m1330 laptop running Vista 32 bit.

I ran Malwarebytes and Super-Antispyware which detected and removed a number of malware items. However, the error still exists.

The computer seems to function properly except for the annoyance of this error message.

I would appreciate some guidance on how to proceed.

Did you turn off anything in Services? Or the Task Scheduler? You can access both from the control panel-administrative tools. Here's a list that shows the default settings for the services. Check to make sure you have Problem Reports and Solutions and Windows Error reporting set appropriately restart them if they're stopped and any others that may have been changed different from the default settings.

I've read nearly all the other threads concerning this. I've also picked up the Microsoft article 931849. I've followed the instructions to delete Windows Defender; however, it is not even listed among the programs installed on my pc......can't uninstall something that's not there. So, I tried to download Windows Defender software, and run it to see if it would correct the problem. The installation stopped because "Windows Defender already exists on your pc as part of VISTA."

Is there a quick fix to simply blow Windows Defender away. I'm using other spyware software anyway. If I simply close the error message window after VISTA boots, everything runs fine. Any solutions?

Hey all,

I cannot do system restore, as a lot have time has passed since this issue started and I don't have a valid restore point available.

I can see that its not just one that's failing:

I've attached the CBS log and a screenshot. I'm really not sure what I can do here, I tried working something from the logs, but couldn't figure out anything, would love your assistance.
Formatting \ Repair are not an option as I want to keep my existing installed software (for the time being).

Forgot to note that I:
1) tried installing some of these updates manually, all failed
2) tried removing the downloaded updates so they'll be redownloaded - it failed as well

So I've been trying to fix this for more than 20 hours now and I haven't made the slightest bit of progress.

The issue:

The update "Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 x64" fails with error code 9C59. Currently installed is IE9.
The update "KB2670838" fails with code 80004005. Google reveals that this update is a requirement for IE11.
After attempting to install such an update, "TrustedInstaller.exe" remains active with high CPU usage and high and steadily increasing memory usage. I think I know the reason for this. The "update posting information" thread tells me to post the folder with CBS logs. However, after I try (and fail) one of the two updates (or both), the CBS.log file keeps increasing with about 1mb per second which never stops, eventually growing to many gb. I think this is the reason for the "TrustedInstaller.exe" CPU usage and memory usage.

Because of this problem it's hard for me to send you CBS.Log because it's far too big. Thus, I'll attach a zip containing one of the "CbsPersist__.cab" files instead - most of them were still too large. I also included 3 other files found in C:\Windows\Logs (not in the CBS subdirectory), they're related to IE11 so I thought they could be relevant.

Things I've tried:

sfc /scannow; gives no errors at all, no integrity violations found.
chkdsk /f; took around 4 hours, changed nothing. As far as I could tell it didn't find many issues.

Each time the monthly quality rollups are downloaded and installed the update fails about 80-90% of the way.  The system reverts changes back and allows us to log back in.  The whole process starts again the next time an update is installed.
I have tried the following items:
1. Installed the Update Troubleshooter

Some members already discussed problem with Windows defender error 0x800106ba. Recommended solution switching to automatic is not working for me. I have Vista Ultimate and Norton Security installed. If I turn off Norton antivirus and Norton firewall nothing changes. The main problem is- I need to change something in Startup programms. But if I access it thru Control Panel- as I click on Change Sturtup programs the WINDOWS Defender Turned Off message window shows up. If I click on the link to turn it on- either computer gets stuck or the message "Error 0x800106ba" shows up. Like I said before- if I follow recommendations to open Services- it shows that it's already set on Automatic.

First, go to Start/Search and type CMD, right click the CMD results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type SFC /scannow and press enter. This will restore any missing or corrupted Windows files.

Hi and thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

I'm running Windows 7 and and the electrical power shut off suddenly at my home.

Once the power came back on, the computer seemed to work okay for abou ten minutes and after that, I started getting a "Windows explorer has stopped working" error message, followed by a request for me to restart the program.

I'm not sure if the power outage caused this problem.

I can still boot into windows now but 10 seconds after boot up, it comes up with the "Windows Explorer" error and wants to restart Windows Explorer again. After restarting, it just crashes again almost immediately and this continues endlessly.

During this cycling, I can move the mouse but it is extremely slow. If I'm quick I can click on desktop icons and use whatever program I run as long as I do it before Windows Explorer crashes. After that, I can't click icons any more.

If I go into windows explorer, it shows me folders but not files so I can't run anything from within it.

It also stops me using control panel so I cant uninstall anything if I want to.

I've done a lot of research but can't find a solution that works for me. I've run Glary utilities, Advanced Windows Care, Hijack this, SFC and Spybot without fixing the problem.

I did not install any new software before the error first started and SFC said all system files were okay. I don't use restore points so can't go back and the pro... Read more

I'm assuming you're referring to the use of Glary Utilities and IObit Advanced SystemCare in your computer.

Regular use of these type of apps is a good way for you to "trash" the Windows operating system and "trash" certain programs and generate unexpected error/warning messages and wreak havoc with your computer.

I'm not there to look at your computer, but it's my guess you need to reinstall Windows and get a fresh start with it.

I was able to get a copy of the sfcdetails.txt file on my desktop and it is all gibberish to me. In two areas it says "Cannot repair member file..." I have attached the file.

I have no idea where to get from here. Can anyone help me out?

A:Error: Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working

The SFC result is clean, those 2 are not actually corrupt (known issue). You can uninstall KB3022345 and KB3068708, and hide them when/if offered again. Or you can leave them be, they are not related to your issue.

In such a situation I would try these:
- try a clean startup - Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup
- try with another user account - User Account - Create
- try Safe Mode
- disable context menu items - download CCleaner - tools - startup - context menu - disable extensions

Hi, looks like I'm on the verge of having to try a repair install to fix my "Windows explorer has stopped working error" errors (having tried all of the other suggestions in your very comprehensive guide).

Sorry if this question has been asked and answered above but my Acer laptop came with their branded W7 so I guess that would be a factory OEM install..? Do you think there's any point trying this method to preserve my data before I try resetting it to factory default?

If it helps to know, I've got 3 partitions on my HDD (14GB Recovery Partition; 100MB SYSTEM RESERVED; 582GB for C: ) and I can access a screen like system recovery options by booting into safe mode...Does that change my options at all?

Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

Dunno what you have tried, but I have a PC with these and used ShellExView64 to disable non-MS shell extensions and my Explorer crashes stopped. Still haven't pinpointed the precise culprit yet.

Hello. I have just moved from Windows Vista to a brand new installation of Windows 7. I thought that I was leaving this problem behind, but apparently it's following me. The installation can't be more than a week old.

I received the following message that popped up when I had no programs running, save for some system tray programs that are always running. I had one folder open on the Desktop, and the only other thing that might relate to it is a USB drive that is in perfect working order:

"Windows Explorer has stopped working. (new line) A program caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. [Close Program button]"

So, I hit [Close Program]. It didn't offer any solutions, or even seem to notice that anything happened, except for closing that single folder that I'd opened (which had been opened previously as well). There are no viruses running around, there is no malware. The hardware all checks out. What is happening? A duplicate error message on a brand new install of a different operating system? The really annoying thing is that I cannot correlate it to anything. No programs, no consistent time between errors, nothing. Just pops up. Which makes it doubly hard to diagnose, of course.

Thanks very much if anyone can solve this for me. This is a brand-new install, and sfc /scannow has shown no issues.

"Windows Explorer has stopped working. (new line) A program caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. [Close Program button]"While Googling the error message, there are as many proposed fixes as people having issues, as I'm sure you've found. The one common suggestion made is to perform a "Clean Boot" of Windows and systematically add startup programs, waiting for the error to re-occur: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135I realize that this is time consuming and maybe even impractical if the error happens infrequently.

So, I have a Vaio laptop and am running Vista. Yesterday I was watching a tv show online (streaming) and all of a sudden the screen went black. It was that way for about 2 minutes, then it went completely white, and I tried to restart it with ctrl + alt+ delete and that didn't work, so I manually restarted it by holding down the power button.

I logged in ok after telling it to start up normally, as opposed to safe mode, and received an error message from Windows Defender saying something about the code 0x800106ba and having to restart my computer so that the service could start again. So I did that (a few times) and kept receiving the error message. I tried to disable Windows Defender (I have McAfee) and didn't get any different results. Also, after all of those things that automatically open at start up would open, some of the screens (such as Windows Live Messenger) would freeze and stay on the desktop and I wouldn't be able to close them. I searched on the internet for a fix, and people said to uninstall WD (which is not possible) and then someone (here is the link to the page: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-security/1134585.htm) recommended a fix:

Click Start
In Search - services
Click on Services in the list
You will now have a list of services on the pc
Scroll to Windows Defender and it will say Manual
Change it to Automatic and Start it

BUT, I followed those instructions as it seemed to work for the other people, and restarted my computer... Read more

I hope someone can please help or provide me with some information/assitance.
I have trawled the internet and am ending up being confused/blinded by science

On Saturday my laptop was working correctly but from then I can only access my desktop - i.e. nothing from the start menu this ranges from the control panel to "my docs" - I get the looped windows explorer has stopped working error message.

I can access the internet and any programmes that are on my quick launch and programmes that are on my desktop.

I have tried dragging a shortcut from the start menu eg my music to the desktop but this doesn't work.

Another thing I have noticed is that when I turn on my laptop there is a HP update to run for "HP smart web printing", when I run this it gets halfway through the instillation then fails due to: "hp smart web printing add on for internet explorer (process id 5192)" - it tells me I need to close this but I can't see that it is running anywhere, now I don't think I had this problem until this appeared, but can't say for sure, it maybe a coincidence? This may also be unrelated but I thought it was best to mention?

I have tried task manager but it doesn't show that this programme is running - or at least I haven't the knowledge to find it

I have tried running various virus removal programmes/registry cleaning programmes but nothing has changed.
I tried to run the system restore in safe mode and went back as far a... Read more

hp smart web printing add on for internet explorerClick to expand...

This is an add on for IE, open IE and go to Tools>Manage Add-ons>enable-disable add-ons.

Use the "show" drop down and look for that HP add on and disable it.
I would create another user account, log onto it and see if the same issues are there also. This would indicate a system wide problem.
Sounds like a possible Malware infection

I have just bought a HP laptop with Windows Vista Premium installed. When the laptop is idle for a while, the desktop crashes and the toolbars etc move around. If I double-click on the clock area, I get the error message "Windows Explorer has stopped working", Vista then corrects the problem. Is there any way to stop this happening.

A:Error Message - Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working

Had this problem and ended up reformatting the hard drive. First time i reformatted it was fine until I installed a "update " from intel and once after restarting the system guess what,Explore.exe was crashing again,So i reformatted again and HAVE NOT download that file and system been running good for vista.Check drivers and try a system restore if they doesn't help then reformat and start over again

Several Programs have given me this pictured message. Clicking on .exe icon or shortcut or created file in a particular application causes this message to appear. I can open the program by right clicking the .exe icon in Programs Folder and selecting Troubleshoot Compatibility but the most recent option it gives me in the listing is Windows XP and I've been in Win 7 for over a year! This just started happening after the Updates of 11/11/15, so I'm wondering if something became corrupted because of those. Publisher 2010, Team Viewer, Quark have all been victims of this. I basically cannot open these applications by clicking on an already-created file with the correct extension icon. I am told it "stopped working."

A:Error message box: Publisher for Windows has stopped working.

See if you have been offered KB3097877 again.
If so, install it and see if it fixes the issue.
(See this post for more info.)

If that fails to fix the issue, then consider doing a System Restore.
