Games Freezing

Q: Games Freezing

I recently reinstalled winxp pro and have been experiencing several problems. Every game that I have on my system will freeze up after a few minutes of playing. After a moment or two it will revert back to normal play, but this process will continue. I have updated all my drivers including the video drivers, mobo, sound card, and windows. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest drivers as well as older ones and the problem persists. Could it be my card is running hot? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

List the games your playing....Do you play these games online or just single player? When it freezes does it ever result in you having to restart your PC?

Hi all,
I have a problem. I start a game and after some time It freeze. It happened to every game I tried (Unreal Tournament III, The Witcher 2, FIFA 12). I've got all drivers up to date and my components aren't overheating. And by the way, I can hear a sound from game when It freeze, the only solution for getting the game back to work is to use Ctrl+Alt+Del a maximize the game and It works again for some time.

My spec:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit SP1
MB: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 (BIOS version F4)
GPU: nVidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
Power Supply: Fortron Epsilon 600W

I'll appreciate any help.

A:Games are freezing

I could be wrong but the specs for your graphics card say it requires 38A on the +12V rail from the power supply. The power supply specs state it has 4 X +12V rails at 18A each.

If I am understanding all the specifications the card uses 2 X PCI connectors. If they are coming from seperate 12V rails you only have 36A available so it is underpowered.

Hi im running windows vista 64bit and in most games my PC is freezing up at about 10-45 min into it, depending on the game. This only happens when i run games and wont freeze up on normal tasks.

Ive tried reinstalling the GFX driver, I'm using a nvidia 9600 GT.

I have above all the recommended specs for the games its freezing on.

I've updated to the latest DirectX.

Any other solutions? none of these have done anything to impact the performance.

ok kids, i need some help on this.

the culprets include:

soldier of fortune platinum (single player)
soldier of fortune 2 double helix (single player)
natural selection (half life multiplayer)
day of defeat (half-life multiplayer)

the screen just freezes and whatever sound was playing at the time repeats itself over and over. the computer accepts no input (ctrl alt delete, esc, etc.). and i am left with no choice but cold boot.
maybe my poor man's system just isnt nice enough. its a laptop my bro sold to me for a good deal (it was not abused in its past life). it is a toshiba tecra 8100. its got a 800mhz processor and 256mb pc100 ram. the video card is 8mb s3 savage.

my past laptop (dell latitude cpx 500mhz, ati rage pro card, 256mb ram) played the games without freezing.

would an upgrade to 512mb of ram help at all?

Please someone help!

In my last post we determined here that my PSU was inadaquate. While this was true I have replaced it with a 750watt namebrand. Unfortunately When i play games that required any stress on my system it locks up and i have to reboot. I have resorted to playing Diablo II as of late. I ran memtest86 for 2 hrs and no errors were logged. And i ran Prime95 overnight for 7 hours. The system is still doing fine this morning. I know the system is not overheating either, all temps run in the green and games lockup before they would even get a chance to get hot(usually in Menu). Any suggestions?

Hi, a week ago a few of my big processor-heavy PC games suddenly started freezing for no apparent reason after about 15 minutes of play (Arma2/Arrowhead/Age of Empire) despite running fine for a couple of years, and I have to switch off the PC to get out of the freeze.
.I ran CCleaner, AVG and Adaware and re-installed the games but the freeze problem remains.
My other games are unaffected and run fine. Any suggestions as to what I can try next?
The only possible clue I can think of is that my Google Earth started running jerkily about the same time the game freezes began, so perhaps GE did one of its automatic updates and may have triggered the freezes in some way?
My machine specs-

A:Games keep freezing

I've solved it by uninstalling Google Earth, so it seems I was right, the latest GE v 7 auto-update messed up my system somehow and caused the games to freeze!
I've now re-installed an older GE v 5 which doesn't affect the games, and I've also selected the GE "Do not auto-update" box..

Gigabyte K8NS Ultra-939
1GB Samsung 400mhz pc3200 Dual Channel
550 watt power supply
PNY GeForce 6800 GT 256mb
Win XP Pro SP2
My games keeps freezing every few secs for a few secs. Seems like the intense ones like battlefield 2 and Far Cry. Installing programs causes it to restart.
Iv'e replaced the Processer, replaced the mother board, tried 8 different RAM sticks at different speeds, Tried different harddrives (IDE and SATA), different PS from 420 watt to 550 watt, tried a different video card.
I've also tried fresh formats with no other devices ( meaning just hard drive and video card), tried different video card drivers (newest, betas, and older), updated BIOS and all drivers.
I've been reading forums for the last week and a half. I'm at my wits end right now. Could someone please help me?

It happens in counter-strike, counter-strike source, GTA Vice City, Black & White, Battlefield 1942.The game continues but i cant do anything. So far i have changed keyboard, motherboard, sound and graphics. And the problem has continued through out. It started when i bought the comp and as you can see i have made many changes overtime and it has gradually become more frequent. I used to only freeze for a few seconds but now it is way longer.

The keyboard is a Logitech Acess keyboard (latest drivers, ps/2) and a Genius Webscroll+ Eye U+P (latest drivers, tried both usb and ps/2).
I am running DX 9.0c and i have reinstalled it once. When this happens he computer doesn't freeze and i can still use the special buttons on my keyboard, ie My Computer, media etc

First, hello all, I'm pretty new here, and not too experienced.
I'm desperate...I have played these games: Assassin's creed, Crysis, Call of Duty4, Medal of Honor:Airborne.
Here is the story: after I purchased my PC, games worked great for the first week or two, somehow. Then, Crysis and COD4 started to just freeze, it took crysis shorter time to freeze, around 10 mins, while it took cod4 20 mins~ till it froze, and my only solution is to restart my PC.(i didnt have MoH & Assassin's creed that time)
I have sended my PC for repair, and they said they switched PSU. I took my PC back and STILL having the same problem. I then installed MoH:A, played it and it didnt freeze. Then 1-2~ days later it froze(wanted to note it was a very hot day, my pc temp was up to 71C).
I took my pc for a full scan, I tould them my pc freeze and maybe my PC have too high temp. I got it back while they said my memory caused problem.
Now thats wierd, Assassin's Creedn works like a charm, played it over hour, so is Crysis(which used to freeze so fast) but COD4 and MoH:A STILL freeze my pc!
I'm so confused and have no idea what to do, I cant send my PC back to the lab, they will just do more *****ic pc scan and say everything is allright...

Oh, and about heating problems, they didnt fix it and their reason was that my PC have sensor and when it comes to too high heat it shuts down the pc, therfore it's not heating problems.

Ok i'll explain first of all the problem and then what i have tried so far to correct it.

Basically the games i have playing run perfectly for 10 - 40 mins and then it locks up, sometimes with the sound looping, sometimes without, forcing me to reboot. Example of games this has happened in, KOTOR, CS, Raven Shield.

Ok now for what i've tried attempting to resolve this issue.

1. Update all drivers on my system. (Problem still occurs).
2. Re-installed XP with sp1/sp2 and without. (Problem still occurs).
3. Disabled Sound-Card (Problem still occurs).
4. Used MemTest program to check for faulty ram, ran fine with no errors.
5. Lowered Hardware Acceleration. (Now when i lowered this i was able to play KOTOR on certain levels, anywhere else the games fps went to low).
6. Used various Nvidia drivers, using drivercleanerpro inbetween installing them. (Problem still occurs).

2.6 ghz p4
Nvidia GeForce FX 5700 Ultra
Windows XP

Any suggestions will be much apperciated. Ive been playing around for weeks now, its really starting to get to me.

Ok, whenever I go into one of my games it freezes, doesn't do anything but put a little white dot in the far upper left corner. However, when I change my graphics acceleration down to none or one before none it works but way too slow to even play (like 1 step ever 5 seconds) I have tried downloading new drivers for my videocard but that didn't work, I upgraded my RAM as well. This has happened with three games so I am pretty sure it is my computer that has the problem.

Hi There,

I have this really annoying problem that while playing a game (COD4 for example) I get 5-15 mins into it and it just freezes. Really fast sound looping starts and I can't CTRL+ALT+DEL out of it. My only solution is to do a hard restart and let it boot up again.

I had this problem earlier in the year after I got a new video card and I thought I had fixed it. But a few months ago I did a clean install and this probably deleted the settings that fixed it.

Any help you can give is much appreciated.

A:Games Keep Freezing!!

One of the first (and probably the easiest and cheapest (i.e. free) things to check) is your temperatures.

Download and install HWMonitor then run the program. Leave it running in the background and play a game for 5 - 10 mins and exit (before it crashes the machine).

Post either post a screenshot of the temperatures (minimum and maximum) or type them out in a new reply.

Also, can you provide more information about your system, I can see what you have in your profile but could do with more. If it is a 'big brand' name like HP, Dell etc. then what is the exact make and model. If it's a self or custom build, what is the make and model of Motherboard, CPU, RAM (including amount), Graphics Card, Power Supply (including wattage), number of hard drives and/or optical drives (CD/DVD) etc. the more info you provide the better answers you will get.

What operating system are you using and is it 32 or 64 bit, are all your drivers fully up to date?

Not really sure how long it's been effecting me, but im using Windows XP professional, and whenever i play Games ( i think i've narrowed it down to games using 3-D but not positive on this ), no matter how low the system requirements ( AKA, Tribes 2, Rise of Nations ) the computer freezes either constantly, or once an hour, or if im lucky once every 4-5 hours, but no matter what, theres a very high chance that the next time my computers off isnt because i shut it down using the start menu, but i had to turn off the power.

Make sure it's not overheating - take off the side of the case, and have a fan blowing towards the inside. Clean out the dust inside, and make sure the fans on the CPU and graphics card are working.

Also, what is your power supply rated at? It might be overheating as well.

Okay so I seem to have this problem with every single PC game I try to play. Basically I'm just trying to focus on possible causes of the problem. When I start a game up, let's say Age Of Empires III, as soon as the intro video comes up I hear some weird clicking or ticking. Then I can play as usual but with the clicking popping up every once in a while.. Then usually after a random amount of time the game will freeze. OR I can actually quit the game and do somethin else for a while but somewhere down the road - my PC freezes.

This happens with every game, more often with more taxing games on my video card. Now I know clicking is usually associated with HDDs but I just dunno about that. I have two HDDs and for example. I had Pirates installed on HDD 1 and had the problem so I wiped the drives clean and installed WinXP and Pirates on the other drive and had the same problem.

A:Games freezing

Hi Luke,

I had similar problems myself when I first ran Doom; I have a similar system, and same GPU as you. There are some issues with ATi cards and doom3, it tends to run better on NVidea cards.

First stop, just try the lastest ATi drivers, they did coincidentally post one on the catalyst site about the same time as Doom3 was released. That worked for me.

there are other, doom-specific, beta catalyst 4.9 drivers available if the above doesn't work.

alternatively, some people have reported success with a 3rd party driver like this one from guru 3d.

There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to play on high-quality settings with a minimum res of 1024x768, possibly higher, with your rig. You just need to tweak things a bit until it works ok.

There's nothing wrong with your power, until it stops working.

If you mean 110Watts then yes this is low (too low for an addon Video card)
(I note that you have removed the reference stating you had a 110 Power Supply)

You can also do the below (freely) before purchasing a better Power Supply:

Please run Memtest on your Ram
And confirm all your Device Drivers are up to date
Also make sure all Windows Security Updates (and Service Packs) are completed

These days I can barely ever play games. I used to be able to play Call of Duty Moden Warfare 2 with no problems. Now the second I enter a game, the graphics will freeze up on me. I know it's only the graphics because I can still ctrl+alt+del, and the sound will continue going. When I try to play Champions Online, I can sometimes play for hours without it freezing, and sometimes it will happen moments after logging in.

I remember blue screening once out of the perhaps 30 or so times it's done it, and a couple times I've gotten an error stating:

"The nv4_disp display driver has stopped working normally. Save your work and reboot the system to restore full display functionality. The next time you reboot the machine a dialog will be displayed giving you a chance to upload data about this failure to Microsoft."

This has been happening for about 2 weeks now, and the things I've tried are unplugging my video card and plugging it into another slot, unplugging and plugging my RAM back in, updating the drivers to the latest ones, rolling the drivers back to previous "stable" builds, adjusting audio settings (which apparently could have ... I am having issues with my computer and freezing during games. I have been playing some pretty intense graphical games for a computer including Warcraft3, Battlefield 1942, and Civilization 3. I have been having problems with my computer freezing at random intervals during these games for a couple months now. I updated my video card drivers and it seems a little better but still happens way too often. It seems to freeze oddly however, sometimes it freezes completely while other times it will slowly freeze like bag lag... both require restarting the computer. My friends say that it probably has to do with my video card or Windows XP Pro Edition but I'm not sure. Thanks for any help.

OS: Windows XP Pro Edition
Processor: AMD Athlon 2000+ (1.67 Ghz)
Ram: 512 DDR Kingston

I have a Pentium 4 256MB 12X cd-rw 32MB Nividia GeForce2 MX graphics card. Any time I play any of my games, after about 5 minutes, the games seem to freeze or go very very slow, and it does that for about 1 minute, then it snaps out of it and gameplay is normal. Then, about every 3 or 4 minutes, it keeps doing this. It is really wrecking gameplay. I have updated drivers and gone into msconfig and changed the way the comp starts up. Nothing seems to work. The red light goes on on my CPU when this is happening. It almost seems that there is another process running that is interfering with the performance. I run Windows XP. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Recently purchased Hotline Miami from the Steam store and very eager to play. Starts up fine, however the visuals freeze whenever the window is maximized - ie, minimizing and maximizing the game window very quickly over and over produces a choppy, stop motion kind of effect. The audio plays fine.

This has happened in the past when I tried to run ToonTown Rewritten.

Hi. I'm running a modded version of Windows XP. Some of you may know if it, it's called Windows XP Ultimate (by Johnny).

This problem is not due to it being a non-official release of XP, since it was happening before I switched to this version.

The problem I'm having is that windows all of a sudden decides to completely freeze, stuttering the sound from the last eighth of a second or so over and over. The mouse is frozen, ctrl>alt>delete does nothing, etc. The only way to recover is to reboot.

This problem, I've found, happens most often when I'm playing Starcraft. However, on rare occasion it has happened at other times, such as when I'm just browsing a website or talking to friends on ventrilo.

It is the most frustrating problem ever, because I have absolutely no idea what is causing it.

Things I have tried to do to fix it:
-I have re-installed starcraft, though I didn't think this was the problem in the first place since it happens outside of starcraft.
-I have run CCleaner and cleaned the registry
-I have tried going into the task manager and ending every process that didn't seem absolutely critical to what I was doing (things I left open were things like my mouse/keyboard drivers, audio drivers, the actual starcraft exec, windows essential processes, etc).
-I have tried running memtest86+ for a full day, which turned up no errors
-I have tried underclocking my ram and processor (though my cpu temps are only at about 160F when this happens a... Read more

A:XP Freezing (crashing), usually during games

Hello -orb-

Have a look in these places for errors

1. Right click My Computer / Properties / Hardware / Device Manager.
Look for "Yellow" errors

2. Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance / Admin Tools / Event Viewer / System.
Look for "Red" errors. Double click on error.
Take a note of the Event ID and also the Source and post them back.

This might throw some light on the problem

I've had this problem for a long time, and I'm not the only one.
If anyone could help me out with this, it would be greatly appreciated.

When I run games, I crash. When exactly varies, sometimes I can play games for quite a while without a problem, otherwise I crash out pretty much as soon as I start playing.

Unfortunately, there's a number of 'types' of crashes. For example:
1. The game screen freezes for a few seconds, gets minimized, and displays a driver failure message.
2. The game freezes and simply closes.
3. The game freezes to a single color, with sound looping sometimes, and other times it simply goes quiet.
4. The screen goes black, and a 'HDMI / DVI Signal Lost' (obviously dependant on what I happen to be using -- I've tried multiple) message gets displayed, with my monitor powering down, only to power up again and either present me with my game crashed, or still running fine.

In the time I've had this problem, I've replaced my power feed, my graphics card (twice), and my motherboard. I've done a full reinstall as well as ran multiple tests on both my RAM and HDs, all of which returned no errors. All drivers are up-to-date.

I'm running Windows 7 64bit, on an Asus P5Q SE Plus motherboard, Q6600 CPU, OCZ600SXS power feed, two Samsung HD502IJ HDs and a DVD drive. The GPUs I've had this problem with were the AMD 5850, 9600GT and now the AMD 6950 HD.

I've tried two different HDMI cable... Read more

I am experiencing a problem where some, but not all games which have some level of 3D graphics accelleration play only for a certain amount of time, and after this it will freeze completely, locking up the mouse, and the sound loops at a very high speed, almost fluidly.

I have noticed this prolbem most especially on Hitman: Contracts, Civilization IV, and Thief 3. For some games, for example Hitman 2, Stronghold, and most Source-Engine fueled games, this problem was not an issue. I don't know if this is a problem with some kind of graphical rendering, or possibly my hard drive...
The game will run for as little as 10 minutes, or in some cases as long as 2-3 hours until crashing, this varies a great deal and it is impossible to determine whenabouts it will happen.

My specs are as follows:

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 - 2.4Ghz.
Motherboard: ASUS P4S8X-X
Graphics Card: GeForce 6600GT (128MB)
Soundcard: C-Media CMI8738
HDD: Maxxtor 300GB IDE.

I have had errors with this hard drive before, it tends to make a lot of noise, moreso when running games, and used to spontaneously lock up and reboot with a "CANNOT FIND SYSTEM DISK" which would be solved by me pushing the IDE cable in harder, the latter of the two hasn't happened for quite some time now.

I suspect it is either my graphics card or my hard drive, or it may even be a result of my cooling fan not being efficeint enough and causing the system to overheat when under strain (such as... Read more

I'm not sure about the other games, but I had the same card and problem with Civ IV. Problem was that as the game progresses, it needs more onboard gpu RAM. I swapped out the card for a 256 meg card and never had the problem again. As I said, can't speak for the other games, just Civ IV.

I am a pretty intense gamer and have recently been having some problems with gaming. Up untill this week, I have been playing with an ATI Radeon X700 pro. I decided that it was time for an upgrade and I went with the NVIDIA 8800GTS 320bit Graphics Card. With this came a new 500 watt power supply, compares to my old 350 watt. When I started gaming with this new set up I have been freezing in the middle of games. My whole computer locks up, I cant move my mouse, minimize or do anything. I'm forced to restart the computer. I play games such as Battlefield 2, WoW, Call of Duty, and Age of Empires 3. I play a wide variety of games and have never once ran into this problem untill I installed my new card and PSU. At first I thought it may have been over heating but I messed with my fan speeds and the temp of the card idles at around 57-60 degrees C which is pretty basic for a card like this. I dont know if maybe I got a bad video card or what but any help is appreciated.

And if you want to know my other specs:
200gb Hard Drive
2gigs of ram
AMD Athlon 3500 processor

Thanks in advance

Depending on your machine, it's possible that you are running on low resources. With Windows XP, the minimum is 512MB, but you should have 1GB recommended.

But other situations can cause lag, ie heavy usage on the servers, low cpu, low video card...

with ti4200 freezing (01-27-2004 06:12 PM) report / quote / edit (#1)

newbie here.
anyone please advise:
i have a dell 4550 p4 2.4 (845i), 512 ddr sdram, 80gb drive, 64mb ti4200 4x card, dx9b, xp pro.
ive recently began gaming again and titles like halo are completelly unplayable. so i started sof2 which i thought was less demanding and cant even play it at 640x480? i get freeze ups in play (ie sound and movement continue while i have no control.)
i tried using 45.23 drivers but now am back with 53.03 drivers without any change.should i go back to 45.23?
i removed any spyware, tried speedfan.
any thoughts? is my card that bad, does it need to be tweaked?
device manager shows no conflicts. dxdiag says no problem but when i try to test d3d, it starts to but then stops stating that i touched a key and cancelled the test!?
is there a program i can run to check the system?
do i need to think about a new ati card instead?
any advice would help at this point.
thanks in advance
