I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So long story short, I brought a girl home and she installed some Chinese program on my computer which I can't seem to uninstall (because it's all in chinese) and is basically acting like malware requesting to install more stuff, won't let me disable it from autostarting, won't let me close it via task manager and is generally just a pain in the ass.  I want to nuke it and make sure anything it has done is undone, please help.  See screenshot:

Hi, friends:

I was trying to clear virus and adwere on Vista machine especially the Windows Support Alert Tech Support Scam  virus. After I used RKill to stop all the suspicious processes then MBAM to catch a number of virus and sent them into quarantine, I downloaded adwcleaner_7.0.5.0.exe and started running it. However, I was given the message " You are using an outdated version!". The machine directed me to the downloaded site to download adwcleaner_7.0.6.0.exe, which I understand is the newest version. After downloading this new one I started to runit. However, the program refused to go ahead by placing the message;" This is not a genuine 32-bit program". Anybody can help me to solve this problem.

Try downloading the program again, it may have been a corrupted download. If you get the same error do you also get the error trying to install any other program?

ok whenever i do anything at all related to the internet a "windows installer" box pops up and starts automatically preparing to install "Microsoft professional xp with frontpage." It then alerts me that the feature i am trying to use is on a cd-rom disc and is not accessible. it says insert the microsoft office xp professional with frontpage disc and click ok. I click cancel, and it says "error 1706. Setup cannot find required files" and closes. Of course immediately the "installer" starts up again. The only way I can open up an internet page is clicking cancel while it is "preparing" to install. I've used every anti adware spyware program out there and it finds plenty of things yet this problem doesn't go away. Also it (or something) is re-installing adware that has been removed already with previous scans. I traced the process, and it tells me it is iexplore.exe, which is internet explorer, and when I end the process it just quits all my pages from internet explorer with it. I'm running windows xp and all it's updates besides service pack 2. Help plz.

A:adware... horrible

Hello everyone,I'm in a big mess. I have a Toshiba A215-S4817 laptop with Vista Home Premium 32 bit, AMD Turion 64 x2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-58. Malware bytes identified: Adware.SpyClean.W but didn't do anything about it. Also when I try to run Adaware scan in safe mode, a security window opens "The Security Center Service is turned off" when I try to turn it on it says it cant be started. Also, Microsoft Office Excell Security Notice informed me that it has identified a potential security concern regarding this file path: C:\...uments\My Data Sources\+ Connect to New Data Source.odc The message said Data connections have been blocked. If you choose to enable data connections your computer may.... be secure. Do not enable this content unless you trust the source of this file" OK, but I've never used Excell! I've tried to run the programs as suggested, but something always happens different than what is supposed to. I tried to install Norton 360 and it kinda glitched during install so I uninstalled it yet there are traces of it everywhere. I tried to install Avast today and can't. I get a message that says my security zone wont allow it. I think I have multiple issues I sure hope you can help me. Need I say I'm not a computer whiz?

A:Horrible Problems from Adware, Malware.

For a few days I have been having problems from some Adware, I believe, on my computer. For about a week, I began receiving Advertisements that came through my speakers and loaded in my processes that were called iexplore.exe. I discovered where they were when i brought up taskmanager. I searched through my computer but could not find what was causing these adds to load. They loaded automatically and not when I opened IE. It would also commonly minimize whatever program I was running, such as a game or Document. Recently I think this program or whatever has encountered an error since the adds have stopped but it still tries to load and I get the error Internet Explorer sas encountered a problem and needs to close error and it will crash my IE. Lately my Firefox browser seems to crash too. These IE error messages appear about once every five minutes. I have run just about every scanning tool, including Malbytes' AntiMalware to my Registered copy of Spy Doctor to name two and none of them can find or identify was is wrong. They all give me no infected files. I recently ran HijackThis and was wondering if anybody notices the problem and how I can fix it. I am not experienced enough to notice if something doesnt belong or is causing this.

On my Vista machine, which is my main computer, I cannot access certain sites, specifically www.dilbert.com and www.advantiscu.org. They appear to be loading, but never load. I've tried with both IE 7 and Firefox, but I get the same result. In addition, the daily Dilbert cartoon that I subscribe to is received in Outlook but the graphics do not display. The graphics are not visible in my Yahoo webmail either.

However, on my XP machine, everything works just fine...no problems.

Like I said, I've verified settings on both machines...I've even done a restore to a previous restore point...no help. I've reset my router, disabled Norton, etc...everything I can think of and nothing has worked.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a new Gateway Vista 64 machine for my office . The old HP Pavillion Pentium 4 with XP 32(?)is networked in other room Here's my setup:

-HP Laserjet 1200 printer is plugged directly into the Vista 64 machine.
The XP Unit is on the network.
I can see and share files between the machines just fine but I get an error when choosing the networked printer in "add printer" when setting up XP unit.
(Print sharing is turned on on Vista Machine).
I choose the networked printer found on Gateway, it says that it will install drivers onto my machine to make things work, I click ok and it says that server for my printer has the wrong driver installed, would I like to find right driver? Clk yes. It looks for a VSFILE\XP but can't find it. It tells me to manually find the file but I can't find that file on HP site or any of my discs. I've uninstalled and reinstalled original drivers onto the XP machine (PCL6) and downloaded a Universal PCL5 printer file. None correct the problem. Vista automatically loaded the printer drivers when I turned on the power. It has a PCL5 file. The 1200 printer works fine when printing from Gateway machine. Vista will only let me use the drivers already installed in the machine. When I try to manually try to install drivers downloaded from HP for an XP on the the vista then it balks and says they were not created for an X6... Read more

I currently am running a 24" DVI connected Samsung and a new 27" LED DVI/HDMI connected Samsung in a dual monitor envoirnment. The 24" Samsung monitor looks perfect but the 27" is giving me issues. I can set the 27" monitor to the recommended resolution of 1920x1080 however the following issue happen:

1. The text is really blurry.
2. 1" Black gap around the entire screen, almost as the image is centered in the monitor.

I have already tried:

1. Updated latest Radeon HD drivers.
2. Reinstalled OS, fully updated everything.
3. Installed monitor on my friends computer and it worked perfect.
4. Switched HDMI cables with friend, confirming the cable is working.
5. Device manager shows correct driver.
6. Disconnected second monitor and only used 27" Samsung.

I am running a fully updated Radeon HD 5770 graphics card on Vista 64BIT Home Premium. I have a 750Watt Antec power supply, 4 gigs ram, quad core processor, and everything else runs fine on the computer.

Other Information: 27" Samsung Model # S27A550H

At this point I am stumped and may have to return my new LED monitor Any help would be really appreciated.

i have updated the graphics cards drivers, and nothing changes. different resolutions dont help, and the lines seem to group mainly on the TOP of the screen for some reason!
when you try to select them on the desctop the blue box covers them, but then parts of them come back :/
the same happens for things open, if the whole screen is filled with for instance IE, like now, there are no red lines, but if i stop typing, then in about a minute the whole screen sould be full. changing the theme does remove the red lines, BUT the video is still pooed.
i have no viruses according to norton,

I have basically two questions.
1) does anyone know if Aloha Bob's PC Relocator Ultra can work with Vista?

2) Is anyone aware of anyproducts, preferably shareware or freeware that can migrate both data/settings and programs from Win98 to Vista Home Premium?

Thanks

A:Moving from a Win98 machine to a Vista Machine

I don't imagine there are any software apps with that feature - any of them new enough to work with Vista would likely not bother with Win98. Data won't be hard to migrate, but I don't imagine Win98 programs would work the same on Vista... You will probably have to reinstall the programs - if they are compatible. (My CD burning software, for example, was compatible with XP but caused the PC to not boot when I tried to install it on Vista) Settings are probably going to be a lot different on Vista vs. Win98...

Any advice on how to do this? I have file sharing enabled on both computers. When I view computers and devices from my vista machine, I see my XP machine, but it is showing up as a media device. When I click on it, windows media player opens. It doesn't seem like it should do this since I am sharing more than just media files. In windows media player i get the error, "Before you can access files in this library, you first must have access to this library".

Hi,
I've checked here and on a couple of other places; many people seem to have similar problems but not similar enough that I've been able to solve it.

I have a HOME workgroup on my Vista machine that is connected to the printer I want to share. I have made HOME the workgroup on my W7 laptop. The Vista machine is able to access folders on the W7 and the W7 "sees" the Vista machine... the network map on W7 shows a "dotted" line from W7 - Vista but when I try to connect from W7 to Vista it will not accept a logon. I have tried using my normal Vista machine User Name and password and even tried creating a new one just for this connection but Windows Security always says "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password".

One of the other sites suggested that Client for Microsoft Networks needed to be installed on the W7 laptop but when I checked the properties for the W7 NIC there was no Install option... does W7 need Client for Microsoft Networks?

All settings on the Vista Sharing and Discovery are on.

TIA

A:Windows 7 machine cannot connect to Vista machine

I finally figured out that it was Vista machine firewall (AT&T Internet Security Suite by MacAfee) that was blocking the W7 machine from accessing the Vista machine.

After I checked the box in Port and System Services to allow RDP access, I was able to access both the Vista computer and its attached printer from the W7 machine.

Well my friends computer. Who doesn't live anywhere near me. Is having lots of problems. I am her IT guy most the time. She knows little to nothing about computers. So I am directing her. She has been having a lot of problems lately. She can't turn of her computer through windows (without pressing powerbutton). She can't uninstall certain programs. He computer hasn't slowed down to much. But when she tries to do certain things it takes forever. Here is her HiJackthis log.

I have my first windows 7 computer on my home network, and it appears to me I have outgoing networking, but not incoming. On the Windows 7 computer, I can get to the router and the Internet, and can access shared folders on Vista machines on the home network. The computer name "advertising protocol" works as the name of the Windows 7 computer in the "Network" user interface on the Vista machines (the user interface accessed from Network and Sharing Center by 'view computers and devices"), but attempting to access it gets a "cannot access" error, and attmepting to diagnose gets a "cannot find" error. For whatever it is worth, highlighting the icon in the "network" user interface does not show anything for "location".

I am going through this to get shared folders on the Windows 7 computer visible on other computers on the network. Obviously this is not working. Just to recap the configuration:
1) all computers on the network are members of same Workgroup
2) My documents on the Windows 7 computer are shared read-write with everyone
3) advance sharing options show:
Network discovery ON
File and print sharing ON
Public folder sharing ON
128 bit encryption
Password protected sharing OFF
IPv6 disabled
Homegroup stuff either OFF or ON and managed by Windows (but this is irrelevant)
4) firewall off

A observation:
I noticed something funky with MacIDs. the router - when the Windows 7 computer authenticates - sh... Read more

A:Cannot ping W7 machine from any vista machine

Why is IPv6 disabled? You do realize that IPv6 is only used on the LAN and is needed for Homegroups to work correctly. Maybe you were just thrown off by the first picture below which is only telling you that IPv6 is not connected to the WAN because it's not supposed to be.

The second picture shows it as enabled for the LAN.
It doesn't matter much either way unless you are Homegroup, but Homegroup only works with Windows 7 computers. For Vista and Win 7 you need to use either workgroup or public file sharing. You also need to enable file sharing on the Vista machine.

You should not need to turn the firewall off.

Are you sure that you are sharing the correct group. There is a seperate public file sharing settings page but the workgroup and homegroup use the same settings page.

Maybe you were thrown off because there are two settings pages. The third picture is the Homegroup and Workgroup settings page and the fourth one is for the Public file sharing.

hi, right basically i'm a student living with friends in a shared house and i;ve come to you guys before for help! but my housemate is having the problem this time.

he went to download a file from limewire, ahem, but once opened it projected multiple pop ups on his screen, changed the colour of his desktop items and put a search engine in the task bar. this has progressively got worse over a two hour period in which we think more trojans have been downloaded onto his system. the computer is running on 100-99% CPU usage most of the time! he now cant access most programmes including the internet, although this varies and he can sporadically access some programmes.

so er....i'm at a loss to do anything but analyse what i've seen and type that lot up there! so any of you fantastic people have any suggestions as to what the next move is it'd be much appreciated!

cheers guys.

Hi, PauL7.

Welcome to TSG.

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Ok.

I just recently had this problem with my internet that was caused by this certain file-sharing program named iMesh. Apparently the newest version doesn't go too well with Windows XP Home Edition, and it screwed up the operating system so that I wouldn't be able to access internet.

Now we got the computer fixed, but it required some heavy tinkering with the WINDOWS folder. As a result, some programs quit to work, but reinstalling them solved the problem.

Apparently not all of them, thought.

.avi files no longer work on my computer. When I try to play them on WinAmp, the infamous "this file doesn't exist" error happens. When I try to play it on Windows Media Player, it says "file type not supported". I tried updating my DivX codecs, downloaded Winamp 5, heck, I even got the XviD codecs. Still doesn't work. I have no idea of what to do.

I'm looking for a simple, easy to use, fax/answering machine program for my HP Pavilion (Win 98SE) computer with a Zoom/FaxModem 56K-PCI. Just a basic one with one mailbox, no internet access, and where the fax sender only has to press their start key, without having to go through a bunch of prompts first. I would also like to be able to generate fax pages from my HP Scanner.

My first computer, a Packard Bell, had a great program, FaxWorks/Call Center, for Windows 3.1. While I still have the CD for that computer, I haven't been able to set up the program on my HP.

The Mighty Fax mentioned in this forum looks good, but I'd also like an answering system.

Thanks!

I have recently opened a new hotel, and in our business center we have two new PC's running Windows Vista. I have a Lexmark 3600-4600 Series printer installed on workstation 1 and have it shared.

My problem is that I cannot find the printer when I search for it from the second workstation. I have browsed Microsoft's help files, as well as a few different forums, and have tried everything I can possibly think of.

Windows firewall is disabled, and while the PC's came with Norton, I have that firewall temporarily disabled on both machines. Still, I cannot find the printer.

I tried Adding New Printer, and typing in the name of the "host" computer followed by the name of the printer (\\computername\printername) but it cannot be found.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated... I'm getting to the point where I want to throw myself, or the computers, out of the fourth floor window.

A:Cannot Find Printer installed on Vista machine from 2nd Vista Workstation

Disabling a third party firewall often does not mean that it will not interfere. It may require complete removal.

And do you have Windows Firewall enabled? Are both machines on the same subnet? What are their private IP addresses, subnet masks, and default gateway addresses? Can you access either by typing \\[computer IP address]? Can you ping either computer from the other?

Robot City is an old '95 game. Nevermind why I'm wasting my time with it..

I can load the game just fine and everything works except for a small glitch in the display. When I move the mouse it leaves a large square trail behind it and distorts the screen turning it black.

The help file mentions this and I am running the game in 640x480 and 256 color just as it says I should.

Any ideas?

Here is the section of the help file that mentions it:

****************************************************************
7. Video Display Problems
****************************************************************
Robot City requires 256-color mode
Robot City is an 8-bit, 256-color application. In order to view
Robot City, you need a video card which supports at least 256
colors in 640x480 resolution. Robot City requires you run in 256
color mode. Other modes will cause colors to appear incorrectly
and may cause streaking or trails on the screen. If you are not
in 256-color mode, a warning dialog will appear when you launch
Robot City telling you to correct the problem, exit and restart
Windows.

I give it the address of a webpage, and it opens up each link on the webpage, and then opens up each link in each opened up page, etc... and so on.... until a pre-specified number of levels deep.

So, in some sense I'm looking for a web-browsing robot.

This way, I can sit back and view all the web-pages without having to injure myself by repeatedly clicking on the links.

Can anyone point me to anything like this? (freeware please).

Hi folks. My machine:

2 month-old Inspiron
2.4 9750 (or whatever it is, it's got 4 cores)
4 GB RAM
500 GB hd

Alright, so I got my 7 upgrade disk from Dell. Installed it, decided it was absolute crap (blurry text that wouldn't go away even after trying every solution I could find, uncontrollable CPU fan at max, much worse interface than vista, etc). Went ahead and popped the Vista install disk in and reinstalled that. Thing is, when I clicked on "format" when the Vista install menu popped up, it worked for a few seconds (just the circular thing) then came back normal and wanted me to start installing Vista. Okay, did that.

Now, I'm trying my options in terms of partitioning and getting a Ubuntu install going.

I really, really miss the old days when you could just hit format c: and everything was done. MS is making it REALLY FREAKING HARD to format my machine and start fresh.

So, I tried to boot into the bios so I could boot from the Ubuntu CD, hoping they're smart enough to ask me if I wanted to format and partition my drive first. I selected the "boot to partition manager" or whatever it was, then black screen. Machine still running. Tried rebooting, even just letting it go to Vista, but I get nothing but a black screen. And it's not just the computer telling the monitor to show black, it's actually disconnecting. The monitor tells me "no signal" and craps out.

This is a weird one. I have a user who keeps losing his information becuase the machine will shut itself down after a few hours or so of working. He isn't getting any errors so on the outside it looks as if the machine is "possessed" as he puts it.

I went into the Event Viewer and saw that he had several of the following errors:

"The description for Event ID ( 632 ) in Source ( KIXTART ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display information from a remote computer. After looking up what "KIXTART" is I found it is part of what we use to push scripts to machines on base. The machine is compliant with our "System Management Server" so by all rights he should be able to get these scripts. I can't just deleate and readd the program because it's not a program that is in Add and Remove Programs and there are no "KIXTART" folders in the Registry.

I beleive everything would be under the few "SMS" folders that are loaded to the machine to help us access the systems remotely but honestly I know very little about "SMS" itself and nothing about "KIXTART" because another office takes care of pushing scripts and I would have no idea where to start.
