CVE in Wsus

Q: CVE in Wsus

Hi,
I want to ask that like before April'17 we were able to see the group of KB Articles under a given MSRC / Bulletin ID when we try to search in WSUS, would it be possible to see the KB Articles under a particular CVE in WSUS now in future?

Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Does anyone have any experience with this system and the possibility that it may cause windows works stations, 2000 Pro specifically, to Blue Screen with a 7B error. We had a push go out this weekend and have come in Monday morning to a Rash of BSOD"S. The workstations are all Dell Optiplex series GX240's - GX270's. The WSUS is explained in the link above.

OK, I finally have got around to installing Windows Server Update Services and am sitting down to try and confgure it. It appears to be installed and has downloaded loads of updates which I will look though later, but at the moment I'm trying to set up the client computers, via a GPO.
I've been through the step-by-step help file:
Creating a WSUS GPO, Adding Template, Server direction, Behaviour config. I've linked the GPO to a group object, which contains one computer (the one sat on my desk).
In the WSUS management console thingy under computers however, I am seeing 3 computers that aren't a member of the group.

The only setting I omitted from the step-by-step guide was the set-up of contact frequency between server and computer, and I suspect this may be the cause of a problem? But I omitted it because the option doesn't appear to exist in my console.

I am running Server 2003 standard SP1, with XP pro SP2 clients.

Any ideas anyone? Cheers.

Since this is a networking problem you are having I would suggest to ask a moderator to move this post to the Networking forum, There are techs there that would better help you on this problem. Just click on the little triangle at the top right of the thread window and ask to have it moved.

Hi. I've been an IT student for a while now but I don't have more than an overview of Servers. Can a server control any policies on it's clients without using group policies and active directory? I'm trying to understand configuring clients to use a WSUS server when you can't use active directory. Instead, would you have to configure each individual client, using local group policy, to update from the WSUS instead of the Update website? Thank you for any help. Shannon.

A:Windows 7 and WSUS

Hi Shanon Welcome to TSF

WSUS is windows update system that will monitor updates released by MS and tell you so you can approve or decline updates before they are applied to all the Computers in your domain environment so instead of computers going out to MS site and looking up updates and then downloading them individually they will be looking at the WSUS server and WSUS will download updates one time and then apply to rest of the computers (saves bandwidth)
As for WSUS and group policy - WSUS gets updates - GPO created for WSUS will dictate which updates will go to which workstation in which OU
Again this does not mean that client can't open up Windows update from Control panel and hit the link to "check online for updates from MS Update" and download whatever they feel like

Hi all and a Happy New Year.
Right let's get back into the swing of things.
I am running WSUS on a Windows 2003 Web Edition.
WSUS comes with the free Microsoft database not SQL Server
My question to you all is!!!

Is it possible to access the database files the same way you would do a SQL Query?

I've got a copy of the WSUS Data files and i'm looking into extracting only the data i require from the files, rather than printing out the very good report that is generated by WSUS.

Any ideas welcome

I have WSUS v.3.1 installed on a a server loaded with Windows Server 2003. The software was working fine up until a week or so ago, and now I am unable to download updates. All updates tell me that "This update does not have Microsoft license terms". I have uninstalled/reinstalled the software 3 times and still run into the same issue. I have researched the issue online and have found no help. I am hoping that someone has experienced the same issue as myself, and can help me in resolving the issue. Thanks in advance for your help.

I recently installed SP1 for Windows Server Update Services on all of our 2k3 servers. I have not had any problems except 1. I noticed that it was not working correctly and i attempted to use the management site which did not allow me in. I was giving a database error/auth failure.

I have been looking around the web and i am more or less having the same issue as:

http://www.wsus.info/forums/lofiversion/index.php?t7940.html

When i checked the event viewer i noticed that it said it was having authentication errors. So i viewed the properties of the Update Service and found it was trying to log on with some weird credentials. I changed it to use the system credentials which was enough to atleast get the service started. However, im still having issues with actually having WSUS connect to the database.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem short of uninstalling and reinstalling WSUS?

Then simply re-install the wsus and it is up and working without hardly any configuration.

Hi all.

I volunteer at a senior center computer facility. We provide 10 Windows HOME machines with access to the internet. We reimage the machines between sessions, and often between users to keep the machines virus and malware free. We also allow users to plug into our system with their own laptops, so they can access the internet with their equipment.
We chose to only update one of our machines to Windows 10. That machines insistance on downloading updates has been an issue. I typically install updates on Saturday on the Windows 7 machines, but the Windows 10 machine won't let us manage the updates. As a result it is often out of commission between when the updates are available, and Saturday when I can thaw the machine so it can install the updates, and freeze the machine again.

We mostly turn off the Windows 10 machine for the rest of the week if Windows updates are available. We have 3 years to plan and accumulate funds to address this situation.

I assume we are going to need to update all the machines to PRO,
Buy a Server
Buy a WSUS server
Network them all together and setup some WSUS scripts.
Hire a networking consultant,

Will we still be able to accommodate home users and android and apple tablets if our computers are controlled by a domain. I assume this will complicate DCHP.

This is so over my head, and I am the go to person on this.

I'm setting up a WSUS 3.0 SP2 server at work. I have the server running, it's downloaded all of the updates for Office 2007 as well as XP, Vista and Windows 7.

I configure my Automatic Updates GPO on the domain to set the WSUS server, download and schedule installs and allow the end-user to reboot at their convenience.

I test from Windows XP and Windows Vista and I have no problems. Everything works as expected, updates are found, downloaded and can be installed or they install automatically at the scheduled install time.

With my Windows 7 Enterprise clients however, the system gets the settings properly from the GPO ( I can confirm looking at C:\windows\windowsupdate.log). I log in with a domain account that is a member of the local computers Admin group. The system updates the WU client version from 7.3.7600.16385 to 7.4.7600.226. At this point, nothing more is written to the log and looking at the installed updates history it shows only the Windows update Agent. The system is not telling me that a reboot is necessary, it's not showing the Automatic Updates shield in the taskbar and I don't see the Auto updates shield on the Shutdown button. At this point, I tell the machine to restart

When the machine starts up, during Starting Windows...you can see it updating some registry info then it huts the blue background screen and says Applying Windows updates. I log back on with my local account which is a local admin. I assume this is the Windows Update Agen... Read more

am in the process of putting a batch file together to detect and force microsoft updates to a machine or a group of machines using PSEXEC.exe and a VBS script created by Rob Dunn and posted over at the forums at www.wsus.info.

I have listed below the steps needed to complete this task and would like it put together (if possible) in a batch file, UPDATE.VBS is the name of the script that I copy over to the machine and the PSTOOLS dir is the directory that PSEXEC resides in.

If I run these commands one at a time everything runs well, I would just like to know if it is possible to make this a "one step process"?
Ok here are all the cmds I need in order to run the script

1. net use \\TARGETMACHINE\C$ /user:"DOMAIN\DOMAIN USER"

2. copy update.vbs \\TARGETMACHINE\C$\update.vbs

3. exit back into PSTOOLS directory

3. psexec.exe \\TARGETMACHINE -u "DOMAIN\DOMAIN USER" -p PASSWORD -e -i cmd.exe /c cscript.exe //B C:\UPDATE.vbs
I have tested this on multiple machines and everything is running well. Any suggestions on how to set this up in one batch file? Of course I will eventually setup the PSTOOLS dir on a network drive instead of my local machine.

Can you apply multiple GPO's to one OU?

I know you can add to the GPO list for the OU but I wonder if it actually processes these extra ones you add? I have 2 GPO's applied to 1 OU. The computer is in the OU but when I do a gpupdate than a gpresult I only see the original GPO I set up and not the new one.

I am setting these GPO's up for a WSUS installation. The GPO I named WSUS and it enables downloads to occur daily in the evening and then apply them and there is a second setting setting the update to WSUS instead of to the internet.

I have it all applied and verified but on my client machines I only see the first GPO I set on this OU (not the WSUS one I just created). I have tried reboots and forcing it... no avail.

My only thought is could it be that in the first GPO its set to not configured and in the second one I have it set to enabled this can be causing a problem? I don't have any of the settings set to deny or block on this so I am not understanding why this isn't applying as it should.

Any thoughts or should i wait and I am just to impatient? its only been about 5 mins since I applied it to the OU to begin with but i thought the gpupdate forced it instantly.

A:Solved: WSUS - Multiple GPO's to one OU?

NM running 2 DC's here the second one had not propogated the change made on the first one but the gpupdate was querying the second server. Forcing the propogation to the 2nd server resolved the problem.

Mainly on WSUS 2.0. I have a server that has limited hard drive space and i used the wsusdebugtool.exe /toolurgeunneededfiles command to clean it up; and it did. However, i dont understand how it works:

If all the computers have received their updates, why is it so big? Also, how come when i approve a few updates it has to download a HUGE amount of data? It almost seems as if WSUS just isn't worth it for the size. Am i just doing something way wrong here? Or is it just accepted that WSUS is going to download updates by the gigs and use 40GB on your hard drive???

Please help!

A:Cleaing up bloated WSUS

The main thing I can think of is the -

The option "Download update files to this server only when updates are approved" must be checked / selected or else, it will re-download those "not needed" updates,during the next sychronization schedule.

This here is one of the main offenders. If you don't tell it not to download it all it will.

A:Wsus & Server2003 Issue!

Hi Ihab N. ZI'm not 100% sure, but I've got the system specs which are needed for WSUS to run below. That would show me that it should easily be able to run...The minimum spec for a WSUS server should be;1Ghz CPU or better 512 MB RAM Sufficient Hard drive capacity for all the downloads, recommended specs follow A minimum of 6 GB free space is required for the volume where WSUS stores content; 30 GB is recommended. A minimum of 2 GB free space is required on the volume where WSUS Setup installs Windows SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (WMSDE). 100 Mbit network connection to the server. The server install required is not standard, see the additional requirements below.Additional RequirementsTo run WSUS your server will also need; .Net framework 1.1 BITS 2.0 Internet Explorer 6 with SP1 IIS 5 or 6David

WSUS 3.0 delivers new features that enable administrators to more easily manage and deploy updates across the organization. This package installs both the WSUS 3.0 Server and WSUS 3.0 Administration Console components. You must install the server components on a computer running Windows Server 2003 SP1 and later. You may install the Administration Console on a remote computer running Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003 SP1, or Windows VistaLINK: WSUS 3.0 - New Version Release

Hey guys,

I ran into a snag when trying to install .NET 3.5 (from Programs and Features) on our Windows 10 Enterprise domain machines.

We recently started using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) for our domain machines to save bandwidth when installing updates on everybody's PCs. I created a GPO and configured automatic installs, as well as specified the Intranet WSUS server connection. I did NOT disable checking online, so in Windows 7+8 there is an option to "check online for updates", and in Windows 10 we have this:
However, it seems to ONLY check the WSUS server when trying to add optional features, and thus causes an error as the files are not there. I did some searches, and found what was said to be a solution: enabling this policy:

Code:
Administrative Templates, System, ?Specify settings for optional component installation and component repair? to ?Enabled? and checking the box ?Contact Windows Update directly to download repair content instead of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)?
What's interesting is that this DID fix the problem... on Windows 8 and 8.1 machines. But on Windows 10 I still get the error. I have seen threads where people said that GPO fixed it for them, so I'm not sure why it isn't working in my case. Yes, I've done gpupdate /force several times, and it's not just one machine that has this problem, all of our W10 domain machines do it.

To clarify, we're using the x64 version of Windows 10 Enterprise. Not LTSB, just... Read more

A:0x800F081F when using WSUS on Domain

I have the same exact issue in my environment.

The GPO setting to bypass WSUS for adding features works on 2012 and 8.x but not on Windows 10. This is not just one or two but all Windows 10 Enterprise systems that have this issue.

If you watch the network, when you try to add a feature it still connects to the WSUS server instead of Microsoft directly, as though it's ignoring the GPO option.

If they are removed from the domain, it works fine downloading from Microsoft directly.

Using source media via command line also works, but I don't want to do that long term for many systems on the network.

Anyone found a fix yet?

Hope this is the correct spot for this. I just started to use WSUS in my domain.  I do have AD.   Out of the 60 or so W-7 Pro computers in the domain, 22 give me this message "Failure Configuring Windows Updates, Revert Changes".
 The 32 Bits seem not to be effected. I have some computers that have 2 or 3, maybe 4 failed updates. One has 64. Several have 13, all the same.  WSUS shows the big red X for the affected machines.

This is what I have tried.
I ran the System Update Readiness Tool (KB947821), It worked for one machine.
I have tried MS Fix It Tool but saw no results.
I have tried selecting 1 update at a time for the install or downloading and manually installing. No difference.
I have removed the PC from the network thinking there was something I was controlling through GP. Nothing has made a difference.

In WSUS, I have selected Remove for the 13 failed updates.  These appear to be the ones that promote the revert.  I know that is not the answer.  (Will that remove the updates from the machines that were installed successfully or
does that depend on where I selected to remove them in WSUS?)

I read (because I have nothing better to do on a Saturday evening) to try this: Go to regedit> Hkey_Local_Machine> Software> Microsoft> Windows> CurrentVersion> Setup> OOBE and change the value from 1 to 0.  Then run this
command: slmgr/rearm. Lastly restart.  I have not tried... Read more

I manage roughly 400 machines on a domain, each using Windows 7 Professional and our updates are pushed out using WSUS. We had one domain connected machine install update KB3035583 and is now being prompted to upgrade to Windows 10. I went into WSUS to block
the update as it would severely impact our production environment. However, KB3035583 doesn't show up when searching WSUS.
I've read that it shouldn't, and that domain joined computers won't recieve KB3035583. If that is true, then how is it that at least one machine on our domain has it installed and is now prompting for upgrade? How can I block this update on the rest of our
network?

Before July 2010, XP SP2 clients can download patches from WSUS. After that, all XP SP2 clients cannot download patches from WSUS but SP3 clients can.

Is it Microsoft's policy?
If yes, can use WSUS to download SP3 to SP2 clients?

Thanks

Kenny

A:XP SP2 download patches from WSUS

Microsoft has been pushing out Windows XP and some other products, removing support for them in favour of newer products, so yes it is.

I would have thought you could get XP SP3 on machines with SP2, but not too sure.

I wonder if you can help.

How do I stop Windows Updates from pushing out in our domain environment.

We are having a lot of problems with a third party web application and im adamant its these so called "Cumulative Security Updates for IE"

All I get from the development team is "it work on our machines" and im not getting anywhere.

The answer is Firefox as it works fine but I'm not ready to throw that 100 users quite yet.

Anyway, so our AD has computers OU when they initially join and we drag to a X64 or X86 OU depending on architecture. WSUS seems to push update when joined to this OU but I cant find where the setting is for this. Any ideas where I can look?

I am in the process of putting a batch file together to detect and force microsoft updates to a machine or a group of machines using PSEXEC.exe and a VBS script created by Rob Dunn and posted over at the forums at www.wsus.info.

A:Using PSEXEC and VBS script with WSUS

Ok after a few weeks of playing around with the script and lots of help from Karlchen over at http://forum.sysinternals.com/default.asp I got it running, it goes a little something like this:

@echo off
:: Programme: remoteupd.bat
:: Function : copy update.vbs to \\target
:: launch update.vbs on \\target using psexec
:: &nbs p; will read computerlist.txt and launch update.vbs on each
:: &nbs p; of the hostnames\IPs inside the file
:: Status : third draft, arguments given on commandline, uses a listfile
:: Note : we will assume "computerlist.txt" is located in F:\Work Applications\WSUS Force Update, too.
:: Usage : remoteupd.bat adminuser password
::
:: Check that 2 arguments have been given on the commandline
if "%2"=="" (
echo usage: remoteupd.bat adminuser password
echo Try again.
exit /b 1
)
set ADMUSER="ADMIN USER\DOMAIN"
set ADMPASS="PASSWORD"
set LISTFILE=computerlist.txt

:: go to the source folder
f:
cd \Work Applications\WSUS Force Update

:: check that the listfile is there
if not exist %LISTFILE% (
echo Listfile %LISTFILE% not found. Create it and try again.
exit /b 1
)

:: Finally, all checks done, let us do our work in a for loop

We have a new WSUS server running WSUS 3.0 sp1 on Windows Server 2008. I'm new to this so I was wondering if anybody would know it's it's capability be to deploy non-Microsoft installs and upgrades. I'm specificially thinking about Adobe products (mostly Adobe Acrobat). We will need to upgrade all of the computers on our network from version Acrobat 8 to version 9 pretty soon. Will there be a way to do that? Will there be a way to deploy updates when they come out? Or just one or the other? Is that pretty much up to the individual vendor? Do they have to make a special package that we put on the server? Or can we make one ourselves? Would that be hard?

Hi,
The move to Security Guidance, and the withdrawal of the monthly bulletin number, has completely broken my patch evaluation process. We used this number to group patches by month and check if they'd been installed on our sample machines.
Please can you advise (or point me to a link) what the best practice is for testing patches using WSUS?

Thank you,

Hello.

I have a WSUS server having the following specs:

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1

WSUS MC 3.0

I connect all of my PC within my domain with my WSUS Server.

The Win7 and Win10 PC does not experience any trouble when checking for updates but the Win 8.1 Pro shows an error 800B0001 when I check for updates.

Do you know the best way to solve this?

Thank you.

PS. My Windows Server was updated.

Hi, I have an issue with Windows 8.1 clients using WSUS.
I have had a GPO set up to apply to All my computers in my domain, majority of them are Win 7 and WSUS is working perfectly, updates are downloaded and installed automatically and when user shut down, they have the install updates and shutdown option.
Settings in the GPO are: auto download and schedule the install everyday at 10am from a local WSUS server.
These settings as stated are working perfectly fine on Win 7 clients and updates are installed with no user intervention.
However, with the Windows 8.1 clients, the updates are downloaded to the machines from the WSUS server but they are not installed on the computer. There is no option to update and restart or update and shutdown they just sit in Control Panel\Windows Update
until someone manually goes in and clicks install updates.
I have installed the required updates onto my WSUS server for Win 8.1
I have ensured the GPO is applying to the machine which it is, i have also tried settings the 'Install during automatic maintenance' option in the same policy and configuring all options under maintenance scheduler and still nothing.
I can see that the settings are applying to machines via RSOP and the settings are set and unchangeable in teh relevant areas of Windows.
Automatic Maintenance runs and the time and date stamp for last run time changes but the updates are not installed as part of this and they are still sat in Windows Updates with the 'Install Upd... Read more

I am running WSUS on Server 2008 R2 x64.  I have Windows XP, Vista, and 7 clients connecting to it without any problems.  I recently installed Windows 8 Pro from my TechNet subscription on one of our workstations and I'm getting
an error 800B0001 when I try to run Windows Update.  I have tried the fix found at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2720211 already with no luck.  When I'm adding a new system to our network, I use a registry entry to enter the settings and another one to remove them
when I'm finished (I have a computer repair shop so we see lots of computers come through).

Here's the registry key used to instruct the system to look to the WSUS server for updates:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
"WUServer"="http://192.168.5.23"
"WUStatusServer"="http://192.168.5.23"

"UseWUServer"=dword:00000001
"IncludeRecommendedUpdates"=dword:00000001
"NoAutoUpdate"=dword:00000000
"AUOptions"=dword:00000002
"ScheduledInstallDay"=dword:00000000
"ScheduledInstallTime"=dword:00000010
Any ideas?  Thanks!

A:Windows 8 Pro WSUS error 800B0001

Here is the solution that worked for me.  The only issue I had was that my Windows 8 client still errored (different error than the 800B0001 error I had earlier) the first time I told it look for updates.  I had it check for updates a second
time and everything worked as expected.  It was provided on another thread that I was following as well:

KB2734608
Issues that are fixed
This update lets servers that are running Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.2 provide updates to computers that are running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.

Additionally, the following issues are fixed by this update:
