Laptop white screened - huh?

Q: Laptop white screened - huh?

Laptop is a nearly new Fujitsu 1510D, running XP Pro, SP2. It has been doing service as a desktop replacement (traveling for months), and thus is on most of the day, I close the lid only at night, this puts it into hibernation.

I wasn't doing anything in particular - was just composing an email in Thunderbird - when the screen went completely, utterly white from top to bottom. No keystrokes changed this, but on reboot it seems to be working fine.

I did some research but none of the problems were definitely the cause of this. The laptop has shown absolutely no indications of either overheating (the fan is on though) or some other display problem. It's been running for some hours since the lid was opened this morning. Therefore, I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software problem.

Anybody experienced this before? From my research, it seems that white-screening is specifically a laptop issue...

Oh, and I do have AV software and spyware protection - running a full AVG test, so far nothing (not that I expect this is a virus but it's always good to check).

Thanks for any help!

Preferred Solution: Laptop white screened - huh?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I am running a laptop with nvidia optimus, using an intergrated card and a 310m geforce. I was using my computer as usual, when it blue screened on me, then rebooted. Afterwards, my resolution was messed up, and the computer no longer dectected the 310m! I have tried reinstalling some drivers, but they do not detect the card. I know the card is there, as I have used it previously.

I have the same problem. When turning on the laptop screen goes to white, I can hear windows starting but cannot see anything. I connected it to an external monitor, which will only display once windows has loaded. I then took the whole laptop apart and discovered the LCD cable was frayed due to a faulty laptop hinge. I replaced the cable and it was the same, just white. The problem I think is with the motherboard and the intergrated video card. Upon taking the whole thing apart I noticed that where the video card plugs in is right where the heat sink is and the cooling fan which gets exceptional hot. I figure it has fried the board to the extend the monitor will not work where it is plugged in, but the external monitor will work but only when windows boots. So sad to say because of the the heat this laptop puts off and if you have it sitting on your lap or bed or anywhere else that it cannot cool properly it has over heated and you will have to get a new motherboard.

A:Laptop screen starts up white and stays white

"I connected it to an external monitor, which will only display once windows has loaded"... This is normal behavior because the video signal to the external monitor is not sent until Windows loads. If you can see normal video, the motherboard video chip is good

I have read and tried many different suggestions, but I have no idea what is going on. The white on my dad's laptop is showing up with thin aqua vertical stripes in it. I have tried many different things (system restore, updating drivers, etc) and nothing has worked. The only thing that helped a little was when I calibrated it and it made the white in the window look white, but everything on the desktop that was supposed to be white, was not.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

Thanks!

Hi, some reasons for Blue Screens
New hardware - software installed.
Device driver - Video driver - corrupted - faulty.
Faulty Ram - Overheating - Dying hard drive etc.
======
Let us have some Pc specifications.
Check and post
TSG System Information Utility - found here.
http://static.techguy.org/download/SysInfo.exe
======
Post the Minidump files
Create a new folder on the desktop and call it dumpfiles [or something similar]

Look in c:\windows\minidump
Copy the last 4 minidump files to that folder.
Close the folder and right click on it and select Send To Compressed [zipped] Folder.
Windows will compress the file and then save the new zipped file in the same location.

Use the 'Manage attachments' in the 'Go Advanced' reply window below to upload that zip file here as an attachment.

Hi,

I'm new to this but I figured I'd give this a try. This is a repost of my earlier post I did last week. no replies .

I have an Acer Aspire 5110 laptop and recently I've been getting the bluescreen when starting the laptop. Sometimes it pops up after I login, sometimes on the password screen. The bluescreen usually has HSFHWAZL.SYS (i think). After this, windows usually does a disk check. Sometimes it finds nothing, other times it truncates like 15-20 files.

Currently I'm running WindowsXP Media Center Edition.

I downloaded HijackThis and here's the log file.

If I'm missing anything, please let me know. Thanks!

I frequently run Ad-aware PE, Spybot S&D, Hijackthis , Nortan system works 2004, Avast Virus removal program, and System Mechanic. I am very contious of what and where I download from... I do currently have Kazaa and Limewire on my computer but I do not download anything but music and the last few months the only program I have even downloaded that from is Limewire.

Two nights ago I was playing an online game when all of the sudden for the first time I lost connection. I figured it was an internet issue only to log out of the game and to see my internet was still up and running. I then try to go back into the game ( everquest ) but it would not connect to a server for some reason. Again I thought it was my internet... So i rebooted the computer.
While I was rebooting I noticed that it was taking an awefully long time to reboot....pausing almost a minute or two on each load screen. It normally takes my computer less then 30 seconds to reboot.

I've been getting the blue screen of death several times a week, if not several times a day, for several months now. It almost always comes when I am surfing the internet, especially--but not particularly--when I'm accessing video sites such as Hulu or MSN Video, although I don't even need to be playing something in such sites--if the window's even up, it will likely give a blue screen somewhere in the next hour. Lately, though, just running a browser can cause it to blues creen.

My blue screen says at the top something to the effect of: driver-not-less-or-equal; I've never been fast enough to catch the specific numbers, but I can try if they're needed.

I've tested this in the latest versions of: IE, FF, Opera, Flock, and Safari and all equally cause a blue screen crash.

I have an Acer E380 8 month old system with:
Vista SP1
AM2 Socket MB (I believe, and don't know the exact model)
Athlon 64 X2 4400+ @ 2.31 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 (I now just installed a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT and it did not remedy anything)
Realtek High Definition audio
2GB DDR2 RAM
320 GB Western Digital HD
Came with 250W PSU (I put in a 750W PSU to try some upgrades with the new graphics card, but somehow that combination gave more blue screens so I took both of them out)
I have about 6 USBs hooked up drawing various amounts of power and I use a Wacom tablet as my main mouse/input, but the problem started way before that...so don't know if that means anything.

Hi dgal. . .

Welcome... to your first thread in the TSF Vista Support Forum.

I see that you have been a member since last November, but this is your first thread and post. Sorry it had to be under a BSOD watch. Let's see if we can locate the cause.

I need some items and I have a few things for you as well. There is a zip file attached to this post containing a batch file named minidump-msinfo32.bat. Please download it and extract it to your desktop. Right-click on the desktop batch file icon and select Run as Administrator. The black "DOS" command screen will appear and scroll followed by the smaller Vista screen while msinfo32 runs. Give it a few minutes, then go to your documents folder where there should be a new folder named TSF_08-21-08 containing the dump files (with names similar to Mini082008-01.dmp), a text file and the msinfo32 NFO file. Zip the entire folder up and attach to your next post.

In the interim, please check WERCON - Windows Problem Reports and Solutions as it usually does contain information on the system crashes that may prove to be helpful.
START | type wercon.exe into the start search box | right-click on wercon.exe under programs above | run as admin | view Problems to Check & Problem History.

Also check the Device Manager for any red/yellow flags.
START | type dev man into the start search box | right-click on Device Manager up top under programs | run as admin

Hello,

As pointed out in the title my second monitor connected via VGA to my laptop doesn't work. Earlier it was working.

Second monitor (HP W2071d) is recognized by the laptop (lenovo idea y510p. Here's a link to my laptop (http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y510p/#tab-tech_specs)
1. VGA cable and monitor works fine (tried it with another laptop). So it's probably something to do with my computer.

VGA is firmly attached.

2. Drivers are all updated

3. Duplicating screens only shows black on second monitor.

4. Extending screens shows that I can move mouse out of primary monitor into other screen.

5. When I was playing Dragon Age, once in a while fuzzy pictures would show up on my second monitor (back when I had it on duplicate. Now its on extend).

Also, I just took a screenshot of something interesting. http://i.imgur.com/oFIfO7E.png
Originally the picture was just to show that the second monitor is detected. Notice that my second monitor is picked up in the picture. Unfortunately, the black screen is still there for me but at least my primary monitor recognizes the second monitor.

Please and thank you for any help given.

A:my pc black screened randomly

Define black screen? Any errors or it was more like the monitor blacked out? If the monitor, shine a flashlight into the screen, stick your nose right up and look to see if you can see a very faint image of your Windows desktop. If you can, your monitor's backlighting is failing.

Try another monitor.

About 2 months ago I bought a Hp G70-460US Laptop that I've been running Vista Home Premium on and it was working perfectly until earlier today when I started to get random blue screens of death. At first I thought it was just a random crash from running too many programs, but it started to blue screen ever more frequently. Earlier I restored it back to 2 weeks prior but I was unable to run programs efficiently and it still blue screened, so I backed-up all that was important onto an Ipod and did a complete system restore to the factory settings, which took about an hour, and at which point it blue screened at startup before even getting to the administrator log-in screen. I've now attempted to boot it into safe mode, however it no longer even recognized that windows is even installed and asks for it to be, and when booted regularly, it just shows a black screen. I'm fairly certain it may be a driver issue, however seeing as I can no longer boot the computer to get the blue screen, it's difficult to check what the problem actually is now. I've never had this problem before and I'm not much of a computer wiz, so I'm not sure what I should be doing to fix it. Does anyone have prior knowledge or possibly some insight on how to fix this problem? It would be greatly appreciated. I haven't given much information other than the problem itself, so if some is needed, just let me know. Also I'm new to this forum, so if this thread is in the wrong place, I apologize. A:Vista Blue Screened

Hello Werty789,
Welcome to Vista Forums!

I think that there was a little glitch that turned big (sounds weird i know).
But since you backed up all of your files thats super. I would suggest you do a clean installation of your version of vista. This way, you can have a fresh start and hopefully your BSOD will be gone. Also, make sure you allow windows to update itself after installation so it downloads and installs all the proper updates.

Let us know how it goes,

The cause of the crash is Norton/Symantec, although this crash looks to be a single one which is handled by Windows.
This means that you have nothing to worry and do not need to do anything

My issue currently is my Gateway- Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit Intelcore, ATI Radeon HD5570 6GB DDR3 Computer is black screened. It has done this on occasion before now but has typically resolved itself after shut down and reboot. This time it has not and remains black screened. I have tried everything...shutting down manually over and over....switching monitors....disconnecting all power and cords/internet. I moved the unit to where my back up unit was located and after hooking it all back up with the other monitor etc...the PC booted back up and went to safe mode screen however I accidentally started it in normal mode rather than safe mode which I intended to and always do and since then it has been black screened and fan buzzing. When I say Black Screened I mean totally...no cursor top left and it has not been there upon any reboot. Please advise. Thank You.

Please help! I am new to this forum. I tried to follow a tread on this but it got so confussing. Does someone have a step by step reply? Issue is Blue screen "A driver has overrun a stack-based buffer". Its on my teen son's PC (need I say more). System has been down for months got tierd of working on it till now. The begining:
1) System starts and said it had two spywares running at same time. After 4 mins the system would freeze, not giveing much time to do anything
2) I started in safe mode and removed my Nortons since I could not this "other" spyware. After a reboot windows said it removed a few malice files. Forgot the the files for this "other" spyware" but it had a tool bar on IE and ended with (4.1?)
3) System worked fine. However as I tried to install a new antivirus I found that neither of my CD/ DVD drives would work (device manger, would not let me update driver). I even moved the drives to the other IDE controller but got the same thing. After two days I found someone who gave me step by step insrtuctions to remove two reg files. Got the drives to work.
4) Now I have this blue screen message. I have removed one by one each hardware item and I still get the problem.

Please help me! John

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Hi everyone,
I'm looking for a White Laptop, I couldn't find any among the ASUS' site.
I'm looking for Notebooks, and not Netbooks.

I was hoping someone may know of some.
Both the outside and inside must be white.

Thanks for your time.

The revolutionary new Matrox DualHead2Go external multi-display upgrade is not a graphics card. Rather it is a palm-sized box that sits outside of your system. DualHead2Go takes the existing single monitor display output (i.e. external VGA output) from your system and expands it into dual display outputs, allowing you to run your Windows desktop at up to 2560 x 1024 resolution stretched across two displays. Using DualHead2Go in conjunction with the built-in display of your laptop, you actually benefit from 3 displays at a time.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
The problem seems to be caused by the following file: partmgr.sys

DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELING_PENDING_OPERATIONS

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installtion, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any other windows updates you might need.
If this problem continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advance Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Etc etc..
Installing fresh windows onto laptop, gets to 73% when formating the hard drive then I get this blue screen, tried about 4-5 times. Using a Windows XP cd.
Its a Toshiba Satellite 1905-2301 laptop.
Worked ok before I tried this, just was running slow and laggy from spyware and virus's.

Hi, recently installed a new cpu motherboard and graphics card. Reinstalled windows, and now the machine is crashing occasionally. It crashes anywhere between instant on start up or 40 minutes into browsing. I uploaded the zip file per your BSOD posting instructions.

I've done a little researching on my own and I think it may have to do with the Realtek audio controller conflicting with my nvidia graphics card in some way. Although since the computer is blue screening I'm hoping your diagnoses might help me figure out if that is actually the problem.

I have a Toshiba Qosmio laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 (32-bit) with most current updates.

I plugged my laptop to a projector and the screen is now only showing in black and white. I tried rebooting. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting. Nothing.

The odd thing is about 2 weeks ago I did this with everything being the same, and I had no issues.

When I reboot the laptop, it is in color for a little bit. Once Windows starts loading, it goes back to black and white.

I downloaded and installed the latest video card driver (GeForce 8600m). While it was installing, everything went to color during the install, then back to black and white again.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You

Hello,
I have built many new computers, and rebuilt many old ones, but never ran into anything like this. I am rebuilding an HP Pavilion g7-1017cl with a 17" screen, that would not boot up at all. What I found, was that the processor and video card were both bad. The only motherboard that I could find for it was, now try and follow this, a g4-1016dx. The place I got it from, told me, that the g4-1016dx was compatible with the Pavilion g7-1017cl laptop. I replaced the old board with the g4, and a new processor chip. I was able to boot the system up. The only thing that isn't working right is the laptop screen. It lights up white, but shows nothing on it at all. To test the video card, I connected an external monitor to the laptop, and it shows the desktop like it should. I replaced the video cable that runs from the motherboard to the screen, but that didn't change it. I even replaced the old screen with a new one, and it does the same thing. Any ides as to why this is happening?

Hello,

I have a compaq presario laptop, about 2 or 3 yrs old. My screen keeps going completely white w/ small lines shooting across the screen where you can see the regular screen. Whats weird about it is..I don't have to reboot or anything like that..depending on how wide I open up my laptop...it stops. Not that I try to use my laptop w/ it half closed or anything..lol But even when its at a 90 degree angle it goes white and it won't stop until I open it up some more and then it goes away. This has started happening a lot more often now then it used to. Can someone tell me why its doing this?

A:My Laptop Screen Keeps Going White!!

Sounds like the interface cable between the LCD panel in the lid and the motherboard has an broken conductor or two in the area where it passes through the hinge. It only makes cood contact through the break at certain angles of the lid. Depending on the purpose of the voltage or data signal passing through it, it could cause different symptoms such as the ones you mentioned.

EDIT: Forgetting my manners here. Hi mommamea, and welcome to TSG.

I have an older laptop called a Quantex N30W. My operating system is XP professional w/ 128 ram and approx. 20 gigs of memory. Whenever I turn my laptop on the screen is just solid white. It seems the computer is starting up because I hear the hard drive spinning and the fan kicks on. I have actually taken it apart and checked for any loose connections. What else could be the problem.

1. has xp ever worked on this pc ?
2. do you have a vga port on the back of the notebook ?
3. have you tried a desktop monitor connected to the port ? you may have to go into bios @ boot up to tell the notebook to use external port, may require another reboot to take
4. have you pulled the main battery and power connector, reseated the ram
5. it is not a good sign, prob the onboard vid card is bad

Hi
I've been given a laptop that my Mum could use while she's stuck in bed .. and that I could use for practice.

The donors get a new one every year, so I hoped it might just need a good clean and updating. They weren't sure but thought that was the case, as they had been using it. I think the battery's gone but it has an adapter.

Now I've started it up, it looks to me like the screen is gone (my non-technical term) - it's white. I think they would have remembered if this had happened for them, which makes me wonder if it could be anything else? (I'm not at all familiar with laptops).

I haven't a manual but I'm not sure about the 'Fn' button, or if the screen could be white if set to an external monitor? I don't suppose I'd be so lucky that this could be a graphics card or something.

I do think it's running otherwise, as I can hear it .. and when it stopped making a noise, I tried typing in the password - after, I heard the familiar jingle, so I knew things were running inside.
I'm disappointed that it looks like something I can't work on .. but thought I'd make sure .. if anyone knows of causes of a white screen, I'd really appreciate the feedback. (hope I'm posting in the right place?) Thank you.

Hi folks. I took a Lenova Ultra book from a customer today who told me that their screen had gone white. I just got done taking the hood apart and didnt see any obvious damage to the cabling or anything. I unplugged the screen from the PC and plugged it back in, put everything back together and still the white screen. The laptop is accessible through an HDMI cable and a tv/monitor. So it has to be the LCD right?? or is there a software explanation for this issue. If anyone has ran into this before I would be happy for some input. Thanks
Bob

it may be a problem with the LCD itself.

You said that there's no obvious damage to the wiring, but have you checked that they are fully seated under the retention arm? You can try reseating them, and if the problem persists the LCD will need to be replaced.

Hey, I have an Acer Aspire s3 laptop and I appear to have a white screen on loadup after the laptop taking a bit of a bang.

There was no actual impact on the screen itself.

When I opened it up, I could still get a picture but when I moved the screen it would flicker between the good picture and the white screen, with grey lines coming across the screen. I used it for a couple of days or so and then I moved the screen a little bit and that was it - white screen all the time.

The laptop can be used on an external monitor.

Can anyone help me in at least diagnosing the problem? I have a hardware diagnostics software so if anybody knows what I could look out for on there which would give me any clues that would be great.

I am unfortunately a poor student so I would like to exhaust all avenues before I go and pay to get it repaired.

Thanks for your help

For the second time in the last few months We've had a partial network outage that was traced to a blue screened machine. This time, the BSOD referenced storport.sys.  The issue being caused is that the switch gets flooded with unknown traffic and that
goes as far as the uplinked switch that gets taken down.
I can't find anything that stands out in a wireshark trace, but as soon as that machine is unplugged, everything is fixed.  What could possibly be causing this and how can it be prevented?
