Internet not working on pc, but working on wireless laptop

Q: Internet not working on pc, but working on wireless laptop

I have a motorola modem (SB5102) and a D-Link Router (WBR-1310). I have a pc which is connected to the modem and the router with wires. From this afternoon there is no internet connection on my pc. The icon on the bottom right says unindentified network, Access: Local Only. But my laptop, which is connected wirelessly, is working fine. it has good internet connection and everything. All my other wireless devices are also working fine. But only my pc (which is connected with cables to the modem and router), is not getting any internet. Can anyone please help me with this weird problem. Thanks!

Both the pc and laptop have Windows Vista.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just got a new dell laptop. When i turn on the computer, it says i am connected to a wireless network, and i have a full signal. however, when i click on internet explorer, nothing comes up-not even a system message, let alone a website. also, on the bottom toolbar, there is an icon of two little computers and it says "a network cable is unplugged". please help. i can't figure out what's wrong. thanks.

A:HELP!! new laptop and wireless network but no working internet!

Click Start, Control Panel then Network Connections. You should have a Wireless connection there. Double click it. Click View Wireless Networks and you should have a wireless network there. If not click refresh network list on the left. If you do have one shown click on advanced settings then wireless settings. Click on Advanced make sure Any Available Network is checked. If more that one wireless network is showing you have to move your Up to the first position. Also do you have Wep Or Wap enabled? If so you would have to enter the key. Also make sure you are close to your wireless router when doing this to rule out a weak signal.

I did nothing to make it stop working. I was on the internet, stepped away, came back, and couldn't connect. I checked the online connection (by clicking the little icon in the bottom right part of the screen) and it came up with an error. I went to Device Manager, and there is a "!" next to LAN-Express IEEE 802.11 PCI Adapter. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, but the "!" is still there.

Did the actual hardware break somehow? Is there anything I should do before bringing it back to where I bought it? I've only had it for a few months, and never before had a problem

Hello guys

a very annoying problem I have eversince I got wireless internet in 2004. My internet just randomly stops working, mostly when I boot my laptop or when I get it out off standby. This is what happens:

I try to connect to my router, but Windows says "cannot connect to belkin54g" (SSID). The strange thing is, I had the same with my old Windows XP computer years ago, but back then I had a Linksys router. My current router is a Belking (no idea what model).

Also very weird is the fact that my internet monitor (I installed a Windows 7 desktop gadget) shows that the connection is being interrupted all the time. It goes from 33% signal strength to 100% in 3 seconds but after another 3 seconds the signal is lost and the gadget is displaying 0% signal strength. Though the LED on my router's WLAN is not red, nor are any other LED's colored red.

Can someone pleaaaaaaaaaaase help me out? I got this problem for years and years. I've also configured my network card not to go in standby modus whenever the laptop is in standby, this didn't work out the way I've hoped.

One more thing, once I am connected to the router and have access to the internet, there is no problem anymore and I can be online for like 1 month without rebooting or whatever. But sometimes when I reboot/come back out of standby it just doesn't work and I need to reboot again. Sometimes it still doesn't work after rebooting so I reboot again and then it is mostly working, but it is so *beep* annoying... Read more

I have a HP laptop that runs windows Vista Premium, and is connected to an old Netgear wireless router, with which a broadband modem is connected to.

I have had this setup for nearly two years, and has been running great, including this morning. However tonight I cannot get the laptop to connect to the internet. I have had a couple of weird issues before, but restarting the computer has always fixed it. This time I have restarted everything, and I can access other computers on the network (not wireless) but not the internet.

Strangely, a hard drive that is connected to another computer that is shared for my backups is also not being found. (the other computer is plugged into the router through an ethernet cable, and internet works fine).

MSN, Explorer and the like will not connect to the net. Interestingly, when I start Mozilla Firefox, which loads a simplified google homepage, after a long long time, loads about hald way.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be, I dont know what to do or try, because I havent seemed to change anything to stop it working. Any ideas I could try would be much appreciated.

I spent about an hour going through similar posts here but didn't really find what I needed. I'm hoping this is just something stupid on my part.
Here's the deal:
My sons laptop crashed. I did what I could to recover it but, no good. Was able to recover his important files (from help I got here) so I picked up a new harddrive (WD60gig) and installed WINXP Pro fresh.

My desktop is hardwired from a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband router that is connected to cablevision via a 3Com U.S. Robotics modem.

The problem now is trying to get an internet connection on the laptop.

Prior to the crash, he was able to connect using the wireless router.

I've tried going directly to the laptop from the modem just to get an internet connection but I haven't got that to happen yet.

Do I need to install the 3com modem software on the laptop?

I just installed Norton Antivrus 2005 on the Desktop.

How do I check for Firewall issues?

Any help is appreciated. Even just a pointer to a good article might do it.

A:Having a problem getting Wireless Laptop Internet connection working

So Your laptop has a wireless network card? Install the drivers for that and make sure it is working, then on the computer with the router, the laptop card should show up, try to establish that first.

When I try and access the internet through any of the main browsers (I.e. Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari) they tell me along the lines of 'unable to access the network' and 'this page can't be displayed' after taking a while attempting to load. I also cannot access it through any of my Windows 8 apps. I know it's not an issue with the home broadband itself and is something to do with my laptop as it is running fine both wirelessly and through using an Ethernet cable on all other devices. I would really appreciate some help with trying to fix this asap as I have spent a lot of time researching this issue and trying most things to resolve it without success, I also need to use the internet for loads of coursework over the summer hols and cannot afford to be taking it to a pricey IT technician. Take a look at the file
\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hoststhere MUST be at least a line reading LOCALHOST
but the question is there anything other than comments in it?
If so, leave the comments and the localhost line and delete everything else.

If you modify the hosts file, then you also need to

ipconfig /flushdns
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

A:internet not working on lan but working with wireless card?

I would suggest connecting with your wireless card and going to windows update and seeing if you have all the updates for your operating system. Look in the Optional updates for hardware drivers that may fix the yellow exclamation marks, as they may be the problem. If the yellow marks don't go away, google that problem "how to get rid of yellow exclamation marks in Device manager".
You may want to disconnect your wireless card, plug in your ethernet cable, and then power cycle your modem, router, and computer. Turn them all off, then power each of them up, waiting a minute between each one. Start with your modem, then your router, then your computer. Post your results.

Also, in the activity there are Bytes sent and received, but I cannot connect to any webpage either with Chrome of Firefox

Hi there, im new to the forums and i've got a problem that's been a real pain for me lately.
I've got a wireless connection in my house going through a Linksys WRT54GC router and also a wired connection with Cisco gateway (only 1 laptop uses it). About 1 month ago some strange things began to happen with the wireless connection, my PC seems not to be able to connect unless I reinstall the protocols and it's really annoying to do that every time I run my PC. Also, the wired connection stopped working (probably because of cable being broken) but it requires a router restart 90% of the time when I want to connect the laptop (that used to connect through cable) to the wireless network. The 2nd laptop has an issue mentioned in the title, the LAN works but it can't connect to the Internet through the router. Ipconfig /all shows that DHCP isn't working, there's no default gateway and DNS seems to be wrong. Could that all be related to router not being updated for a long time? I tried reinstalling drivers, unistalling and installing back network card and doing most of the things mentioned in similar threads but nothing seems to work. I know it all looks very silly but I can't do anything about it, at least now - I don't have access to any router settings and can't update it.
Every bit of help is appreciated. I can paste all the information needed from all computers.
Operating systems are: Windows 7 on PC and the 1st laptop, 2nd laptop... Read more

Hi, I have just got an EZCast home multimedia wireless sharing device. It works great from my acer laptop and from my android phone. HTC one! My problem is that it works as an access point so both my phone and my laptop need to connect as clients. when I do this I have no connection to the internet anymore.
I have a great deal with my telecoms provider in Ireland and get umlimited BB over G4 so I use the HTC either in wifi hotspot mode or Bluetooth PAN to connect to the internet on my laptop (and wireless printer).
Either way when I connect to the EZCast access point I have no internet. The phone sees a wireless network and shuts down my mobile data connection and my laptop can only connect to one wireless point at a time. When I do bluetooth tethering and I am connected to the EZCast AP, I can still see that I am connected to the BT PAN but I have no adapter to connect it to so no internet. I tried to bridge the PAN and the WIFI but forums are telling me that you can't do this with Windows 7 anymore. I have noticed that there is a virtual miniport in Windows and I was wondering would it be possible to use this. I know I could buy a USB Wifi dongle and that would be it but it must be possible some other other way. The networks don't havce to talk to eachother. I need to get internet on the laptop and then at the same time be able to connect to my TV via the EZast Wifi. Hope someone can help. It's my first post her so hope I have given enough info.

Good Morning - Any help is appreciated.

I purchased a new HP laptop (G42 41 5DX) with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 BIT. When connecting to wireless, it says limited access and is not working. However, when connecting via the ethernet cord, I can get online with no problem. We own a desktop and another laptop which connects to the wireless without any problems so I know that the signal is fine. Verizon Fios is my ISP and my router is an Actiontec MI424WR Rev E.

I've tried a hard reset of the router (leaving it unplugged) but this has not fixed the problem.

Any advice?

A:Wireless not working on new laptop

You will want to go into the network and sharing center on your Win7 machine.

Choose the option to set up a new connection use the manual wireless set up then designate your routers settings when you do that. Win 7 likes to use WPA2-PSK security and AES encrytion. You also need to type in your SSID and your wireless password.

It's also important to go back into your routers wireless settings after you reset your router to create the SSID and password, you will also need to select the security and encryption again. Use those settings when you set up your Win7 wireless connection.

My old thread, I decided to just re-post as the old one was cluttered.

Wireless suddenly stopped working on my laptop.
I have a Compaq 6715B, and yesterday while I was browsing the web, my wireless stopped working, it gave me a notification in the "Safely Remove Hardware" thing near the clock, "The blah blah blah Network adapter can now be safely removed".
The wireless hasn't been working ever since.
The troubleshooting that I've done so far are:
Make sure the wireless button on the computer is enabled, it will not enable, it is a "touch" button, and it lights up blue when it's working, it won't even respond to my touch, the other buttons next to it do work. So that's not helping at all.
I have two of the exact same laptop, I switched the wireless card that's installed INSIDE the laptop, not a wireless card that just slides in the side, one that's under the bottom panel, I swapped them, uninstalled the driver, and connected via. ethernet to reinstall the drivers. No dice.
It's not showing up in the device manager or anything..Click to expand...

I've swapped the card itself, swapped the whole LED board (the board with the power button, wireless button, etc)
Nothing seems to work..

I was running Windows 7, and just switched back to Windows XP, SP3.

Help is very very greatly appreciated, thanks in advance..

Welcome to TSG.
Was this always a problem. ?If not, what changed? Hardware/software ?
Any other wireless devices affected ?
Let's check for wireless interference :
Wifi test exe.

Download and run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspecto from
on the problem machine. Post a screen shot of the main screen(networks screen) here.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button
to upload it here.

Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error about a missing function, download and install NET Framework.

Also.Make and model of wireless adapter?

Is the wireless adapter light on and active color(generally blue) ?

After installing IE8 (internet explorer 8) my wireless adapter stopped working on my HP530 XP laptop. This happened before after another Automatic update from Microsoft that required me to uninstall the update to get it working again.

This time after IE8 the wireless remained dead after uninstallation. All drivers from HP failed, the HP-site tests failed and HP service guys had no idea to fix it. Eventually they told me to bring it in, minimum cost R2000 ($250)

It happened before, so i searched and found a driver that fixed it, this is what i learned:
1. If the adapter is missing from your Device manager, but lights up for a moment just after startup, it is probably not fried, but needs to be recognised by windows again.
2. HP can not help you to fix it and will take your money and it will happen again...soon
3. Use this link for a Broadcom Wireless Driver (another for Vista is on the same site):
4. The driver filename is: 63wb05ww.exe
5. Read the installation instructions carefully, do not just run it, reboot, and the little blue light will shine again!
6. Make sure your BIOS is up to date.

Hope this helps, and stick it to HP for selling us laptops that they KNOW have this adapter problem.

Here's the deal. We have two computers both connected to a WTG624 Netgear router. One is connected by a wireless USB adapter WG111v2, also Netgear.
A few days ago, one of them suddenly started acting up. The wireless signal (as shown on the netgear network wizard) would connect and then disconnect in a matter of seconds, but even when it said it was connected, the internet wouldn't work at all. I had to reinstall the driver, but that didn't work either. Now I had a constant signal with 80%+ strength but alas, the internet was not working. The networking icon in the system tray said I had 'little or no connection' and when i tried to repair it couldn't get one, ending up with
I tried putting in ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew into the command prompt box, but it said that it couldn't do anything while 'the media is disconnected'. I tried powercycling. I tried using the Windows wireless connection configuring thing, as the Netgear customer support people told me to, but that didn't work. I tried putting in netsh int ip reset rest.log and then netsh winsock reset catalog too, and then rebooting it, but I still couldn't get internet. I checked all the connections, and it's beginning to drive me mad.
Does anyone know what's wrong? And can anyone help me? Thanks.

A:Internet/Wireless not working

Hi Ashlea, and welcome to TSG.

I suspect that the networking hardware drivers are missing and need to be installed. Check the Windows Hardware Device manager for any red or yellow warning symbols for any of the hardware.

Depending on the age of the computer, you may find out that XP compatible drivers may not be readily available for it.

Are you having problems accessing the contents of the memory sticks or just a problem opening the actual files? Are the programs needed to open the memory stick files installed on the computer?

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, Mcafee , AVG etc

have a read below and see if anything there can help

Atheros Wireless Adapter - AR5007EG & AR5007

Over the last couple of years we have been seeing a lot of problems with the above adapters, mainly concerning WPA and WPA2 encryption and mainly on windows Vista.
We have seen just a couple of issues on other windows operating system, windows XP and windows 7.

Windows XP:- A driver update has resolved the issue
Windows 7 :- No conclusive results for a fix

The wireless adapter gets an IP configuration, and shows as connected, but communication is non-existent or sporadic.

Log into the Router and disable the wireless security and see if you are now able to connect to the internet and surf OK.
Please post back a reply here, and let us know if that works or does not work.
If you post back the make and exact model of the router - we can advise how to disable the wireless security

Here are a number of possible solutions

--- 1) In Device Manager right click on the wireless adapter and "update driver."

--- 2) Download and install the latest wireless driver from your laptop manufacturer's web site support section,

If you post a reply here with the Make and EXACT model of yo... Read more

I purchased a new PC (Lenevo ideacentre e700 AOI) about two weeks ago. On an inital set up everything was running, fine did all the updates and was able to access the internet. I did not use the PC for around a week, and when attempting to try it the internet would not connect. I noticed that it was not showing any wifi options at all. I went to device manager and an exclamation mark was showing on our wifi network adapter which is a Intel dual band (cant remember the rest and now my device manager wont load at all to find). I took it back to the shop they looked at it and said it's probably just the drivers, however these are up to date. They ran the lenovo support and nothing come back wrong and the wifi connected to the stores wifi. The technician told use to just disable and enable with any troubles as would give a kick start. When we got home the wifi still wouldn't connect, tried to disable/enable however it wasn't even showing on the device manager, after a couple of times it finally appeared so we did the disable/enable however it sitll would not work. Now my pc won't load device manager at all.

Any recommendations, otherwise we will take the PC back to the shop.

Welcome to the forum. Given the fact that its brand new I would take it back to the shop the problem would seem to be the update win10 drivers for that card dont work very well you could install intel drivers or do a system restore but being new you want a pc that works

I'm running Windows Vista Basic on a Dell Inspirion 1501.

My problem is that while my Local Area Connection does work, my wireless doesn't. I've tried updating the drivers and it was working fine until one day it wouldn't work. And, when I try to enable the Network thing in Manage Network Connections, it says enabled in the window that pops up, but then in the icon it says disabled.

Hi guys, here is my question.

So my sister is running an Acer Aspire 3680 laptop. Yesterday the wireless internet on her laptop was working. She ran the default window's disk cleanup and then after she rebooted her computer and let the clean up run her wireless internet stopped working. It connects to our home network but it doesn't get past the Identifying stage.

I am running a Netgear model WGR614 v7 network. Its 802.11g.

On my network I assign static LAN IP's based on MAC addresses and I employ MAC address filtering.

I checked her mac address in case the disk clean up had changed it, but the one on her computer matched the MAC i have for her in the router. I have tried cycling the power on the router and no help.

I have removed our home network from her wireless network places and then re-added it, retyping the correct password.

The RJ45 or LAN connection works fine. I am just lost on why the wireless is not working. We have other laptops in the house and they can get on the wireless internet just fine.

I am running out of ideas here, any help would be great, thanks.

My friend has asked me for help, i've already had her call her router company and they just hung up on her. as did her ISP.

She runs on a Windows XP system with wireless internet.

Her problem:

1 Desktop PC
2 Laptops

One of the laptops is unable to access the internet via browser. She can ping her router and gets replies in the 200ms. The internet says it's connected, but she can't connect to it.

She has made sure the internet switch is on, has restarted all the computers in the house (including her laptop which isn't picking up the signal), and she has restarted the internet.

Is there anything else she can do? Any advice? I'm sorry if this isn't enough information. I can try and get more if it's needed

I was stupidly playing around with the properties of my wireless internet connection (changing from open to shared etc etc). Now I have a problem where the internet does not automatically connect to my wireless network, and when I manually connect it, it seems to work for about 20 mins, then disconnect.

Also, rather oddly, when 'connected' it still says that its disconnected.

Does this make sense?

kind regards, Rob

I can't figure out what the problem is, but I can't get my laptop to connect to my wireless network. Under Network connections, it says the Wireless Network Connection is Enabled. The device is also working properly in the Device status section. And down in the taskbar, the Wireless Network connection has an excellent signal strength, so it appears to be connecting just fine to the router. Other wireless machines in the house work, so I know the network is OK. And finally, if I plug the laptop directly into the router, I can get to the Internet.

It was working previously, but something must've changed. Any suggestions??

I'm baffled, befuddled, bewildered, discombobulated, flummoxed , muddled, perplexed, perturbed, puzzled, AND stumped. Does anyone actually understand wireless networking? My laptop was working beautifully for a few days, then for no discernible reason, it don't.

I have Windows 7 on my desktop. it has a ASUS P5W DH Delux with built in wireless AP. The Sony Viao PCG-Z1AP laptop is running Windows XP Pro SP3.

I set up a ad hoc network on my desk top with internet sharing, and everything worked fine for a few days. Now while it is still getting a strong signal, 4-5 bars, and says it is connected, I can't access the internet through the laptop. Works perfectly plugged in to the cable modem.

And ideas for a sloution to this puzzling situation would be highly apreciated.

I'm going to bed now, soI'll check this in a few hours

If your network is encrypted, disable the encryption and try to connect. If successful, re-enable encryption and reconnect.

During reboot the light goes on and then when fully booted it turns off

I have disabled and enabled the network adapter

I have checked the adapter and the driver is upto date and the system tells me it is working properly

Is there anything else I can check?

Many Thanks

A:Wireless has stopped working on laptop

Go to the Device Manager and uninstall the driver for the network adapter. Restart the laptop and Windows should reinstall the driver automatically. See if this clears up the problem. If not, it might have failed. You could try going to Add and Remove Programs (if XP) or Programs and Features (if Vista or W7) and uninstall the LAN driver if one is there and install a fresh driver from Sony.

If none of that works, consider getting a USB wireless adapter.
