desktop background keeps reverting to red screen with "biohazard" type image

Q: desktop background keeps reverting to red screen with "biohazard" type image

hey guys,

i was working on a computer the other day helping someone "clean it up" and make it run faster. i did all the normal "clean up" stuff, got her back online, pc running much faster, everyone's happy.

except for one thing: one of her original complaints was that her desktop background had recently reverted to all RED with this image in the middle that looks something like a biohazard logo.

i tried changing the desktop background via the control panel, and it changed momentarily and then reverted back only moments later. I ran avg anti-virus and spybot to sweep her machine of any bugs/viruses (and found quite a few). when i left the red desktop was gone.

then i got a call a couple of days later saying it had returned, and not only that but her sister (who has the same exact system) was having the same exact problem. actually, i think i remember hearing someone ELSE talking about this too recently.

has anyone heard of this? and then the obvious question being: how do i get rid of it?

Preferred Solution: desktop background keeps reverting to red screen with "biohazard" type image

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This morning, I noticed that my Windows' "Desktop background (wallpaper) image" no longer displays correctly. After selecting any image (normally, I use one of my .jpg's), and setting it to "stretch," it will not display the "stretched" version to fit the image dimensions fully. It no longer "shrinks or expands" to fit the horizontal, actual size of the image to the width of my monitor's display area.

(Note: I'm certain that it was working properly just days ago, but I only noticed the issue today.)

When I choose "center" (the image), the displayed image is not centered, but it is actually off-center to the right (horiz), and lower (vertically)! I see lots of plain background color in the upper-left portion of my display, and the image is nearly off the screen toward the left and bottom-left portion of my display.

* I'm using Windows XP Home Edition, with all latest updates.
* I recently upgraded from Internet Explorer 7 to Internet Explorer 8 (and, updated its files).
* No new software has been installed recently, except for updates from Microsoft, a new AVG Internet Security program reinstall, and Blizzard's "World of Warcraft/Wrath of The Lich King" game's regular weekly updates.

All software appears to be working correctly. No problems except for the sudden inability for the 'desktop' image to be handled correctly by WinXP?

I think I am infected with Malware, Spyware, or some type of virus. My desktop background has become a bright red screen with a toxic symbol on it and underneath it, it says "Your Privacy Is In Danger!" A:desktop background keeps reverting to red screen

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!
Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.

If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Login on your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, double-click the SmitfraudFix.exe again.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If it is infected and a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace the infected wininet.dll with the clean file. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter... Read more

Please Help,

I have been receiving pop-ups in IE7 that say "Warning: possible spyware or adware infection! Click here to scan your computer for spyware and adware...". I have run many scans (Trend Micro online, Avast!, Spybot SD) and although they find and change things, this pop-up still occurs. I am moderately techno savvy, so the thought of reg. and .dll cleaning is a little beyond me.

Also, I noticed that after a few days of these pop-ups, my desktop will be replaced by a red screen with biohazard symbols, stating "Your privacy (something)". I have managed to goto a last restore point which gets rid of the red screen, but I cannot go far enough back to get tid of the pop-ups. Therefore, in another couple of days of pop-ups, I get the red screen and have to restore again.

I have just downloaded the Trend Micro HijackThis, as I have seen others do with this problem, but I do not want to install it, yet, for feer of running too many anti-virus programs at the same time.

Please, help!
Any advice would be great!

Screenshot of my current (obviously hijacked) desktop background is linked above. Also when I go to my desktop settings to remove the HTML desktop, I only have 3 tabs now: "Themes, appearance, and settings" and I cannot even edit my background image.

Another issue is I cannot connect to the internet using internet explorer. It says page cannot be found and so does firefox. Can anyone help? I unfortunately tried to create a shortcut to "Yahoo! Messenger" on my Desktop. This I did by right-clicking on the webpage and then clicking "Create Shortcut". What resukted was the embedded placement of a signicantly sized logo of the words "Yahoo! Messenger". This in inactive and very much part of my Desktop background now! Very irritating and very cunning of Yahoo!. Changing the Desktop Backgrond doesn't help.

I have tried lots of things but can't identify a folder containing the message in order to eliminate it. Unfortunately, in my trials to remove it I turned off the Systems Restore to run Ad-aware 6.0 - having failed when I ran it with the Systems Restore on. This also failed and of course I lost my Systems Restore Point before I could run Registry Healer.

Is there any way I can remove this most irritating , uninvited advertisement?

Hi, my computer was infected yesterday after I downloaded what I thought was a software update . My computer desktop background was changed to a blue background displaying the message "Warning! Spyware detected on computer! Install an anti-virus or spy remover to clean you computer".

McAfee detected a trojan and deleted it immediately, I then physically disconnected from the internet straight away, looked at the task manager deleted the file B2E.exe that was running from the temp directory. The software tried to take me to a bogus website to download their software and this was blocked by firefox =).

I then ran spybot, followed by panda activescan and HijackThis, the logs are below, could any experts help me out here? I goggled and found websites that tells you how to remove this manually, but not sure if this would be applicable for every computer and the adware may have change since.

Thanks in advance

I've searched around and seen several posts regarding this malware. I may be a bit worse off, though, because I can't explore or run any programs! Earlier, I disabled about 3 things from the startup tab in msconfig. This thing started with the first restart, which said I had a problem with winlogon.exe and gave me a weak blue screen of death. I unplugged and re-plugged the computer, turned it on again, and it booted like normal without the screen. It's a stylized blue screen with windows XP at the top that runs a check saying "the volume is dirty." It then scans the disk and says everything is okay. This time it did that and went to the desktop like nothing was wrong. I know this is something I did with msconfig, but I don't know what. I don't quite remember what I unchecked, so a list of the unchecked items is here in a picture attachment. There's one missing from the list, and that's Adobe Reader Speed Launch.
This started right after I disabled those items in msconfig, so tell me what should be enabled.

I have no idea when this occurred. I lost the onboard video a few weeks ago and installed an nVidea card. But that's about it. If I right click any image type in Windows, the above message does not appear in the context menu. If I right click an image within any browser, I get the option in the context menu.

I've searched and read most threads pertaining to this issue here, but none have helped. I'd wouldn't mind a SysRestore, but I don't know a date when this began don't want to go back so far that a number of installs/uninstalls would be affected.

Any help is appreciated.

Hello,

So I have my Desktop to load a random picture from a folder of ~3,000 images every minute. I tend to add new pictures to this folder from time to time (hence the reason why there's so many images in there right now). I am wondering if there's an advanced option that allows Windows to prioritize loading a random image with a more recent Date Modified detail. So for example, I will list File Names and the Date Modified detail next to them:

1.jpg (3/18/2016)
2.jpg (2/29/2016)
3.jpg (1/1/2016)
4.jpg (9/26/2013)
5.jpg (8/8/2012)
6.jpg (7/7/2007)

So in this example, Windows would most likely show the first 3 pictures randomly, before showing the last 3.
(Like so: 2, 1, 3, 4, 6, 5)

Do you understand what I'm saying here? I hope you see what I mean.

I am not sure if you can take away the right click option from showing up, but you can take away the ability to change the background with a policy if you are using Windows 2000 or XP Pro.

Hi all
Previously the  "Save Picture"  box would put a web generated title in the box and automatically selected JPEG.  Now the title box reads "untitled" and the only file options offered are "png" & "bmp"

Please note that a similar post has appeared, but the solution did not match the fault.  I'm seeking to restore the automatic response to save picture, that might have been upset by antivirus clean-up programme.

Thank youin advance for considering my problem

One feature I really liked in XP was the ability to look in a folder through My Computer and sort the files by extension. For example if I wanted to get all .jpg files to one side of the folder as I looked for a file, I could click View, Arrange Icons By, Type and make that happen. I don't see that feature in Windows 7. I'm using W7Pro and can't find that or a similar feature anywhere. Is it here and I just haven't found it? TIA

I was having an issue with my Windows 7 cursor flickering between 'arrow' and 'working in background' at an irritianting rate and found the following TechSupportGuy thread a couple of minutes ago:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/642572-mouse-cursor-constantly-flickering-between.html

One of the posts in the thread lead me to the solution but unfortunately it seems most people have opted for reinstalling the OS instead!

Given the the original thread is closed I decided to create a new one and post the solution here in an attempt to prevent people from taking such drastic measures to get rid of this (incredibly irritant) issue in the future.

I simply disabled the Windows Search service and killed the process behind it (SearchIndexer.exe) in Task Manager. My cursor is now back to normal

Disabling this service means any new files will not be indexed although you can re-enable it and leave the pc running for a couple of hours every now and again so that new files are indexed. Hope this helps!

Then I am hitting the https://login.microsoftonline.com/<tenant>.onmicrosoft.com/oauth2/token?Content-Type=application/x-www-form-urlencoded end

but it is failing with "error":{"code":"generalException","message":"General exception while processing"}}. The REST response code is 401 Unauthorized. I have filed a Microsoft support ticket but they
have asked me to post on these forms. Can someone please help me with this? I am not able to move forward because the error is pretty generic and doesn't give any additional details.

I downloaded a virus yesterday (8/10) trying to open a video of the opening ceremony of the Olympics (I do not remember the exact URL). The virus was disguised as a video codec for Windows Mediaplayer. After I downloaded the file, a blue screen with a warning in a yellow box replaced my desktop image. The warning says:

"Warning! Spyware detected on your computer. Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

I have tried to remove it with McAfee Antivirus and with a Virus Removal tool I got from my University, but neither of these was able to remove the program. Can you help me?

I attached the two log files below. If you need any additional information, please let me know.

Hello All,

I started a few weeks ago on the PowerShell programing and I got my answer from here only. So am putting up the error that I am getting now to get some help again.

Scenario : I wrote a script that checks a Folder on a server and counts the number of files in it.Then when it finds the resulting number to be more then a specific value(threshold) it sends up a mail to the required alias. To break it all along the portion to send a mail is generated through DBmail using another .PS1 file.

In the PS1 file containing the main checking of number of files I am trying to pass 2 parameters :

1. Folder path on the server
2. the Threshold value of number of files

Now when I created a job to run this powershell script as :

& "C:\PowerShell\Power.PS1" \\XXXX\\c$\Documents and Settings\ABC\Local Settings\Temp 10

IT fails with the error :

A job step received an error at line 1 in a PowerShell script. The corresponding line is '& "C:\PowerShell\Power.ps1" \\XXXX\\c$\Documents and Settings\ABC\Local Settings\Temp 10'. Correct the script and reschedule the job. The error information returned by PowerShell is: 'Cannot convert value "and" to type "System.Int32". Error: "Input string was not in a correct format." '. Process Exit Code -1. The step failed.

I really can not move forward on this.

Please help.

I have an older (1999) Dell XPS T500 system running Win98 with a 1626HT Trinitron color monitor. Though the system is old, it has been upgraded wherever possible and has performed well until this morning. The desktop image is not filling up the monitor screen area anymore. The top two corners of the desktop image have shrunk away from the corners of the monitor area, and the bottom half of the desktop image has disappeared below the bottom edge of the monitor screen, leaving black space across the top and sides of the monitor. I hope I have described this well enough so someone can diagnose what the possible source of the problem is. Does it sound like the monitor has failed? I can't test the monitor on another computer because all I have is this one and a notebook computer. I tried to reboot and it sounds like the computer is making all the right beeps and sounds, but I just can't get a full screen to appear on the monitor. Does this problem sound familiar to anyone?

A:desktop image "slid down" monitor

The notebook should have a monitor socket in the back -- you could hook the monitor to the notebook and find out if the monitor is doing the same with the notebook.
