Internet Protocol Version 6

Q: Internet Protocol Version 6

I am just curious about this protocol. on my desktop computer it shows local access and sometimes shows limited internet access. On my Laptop, wifi puter, the IPv6 is never used, is there a way to utilize this protocol for my laptop and why does the access go from limited internet to Local on my desktop?

Thank you

Preferred Solution: Internet Protocol Version 6

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Internet Protocol Version 6

I don't know much about IPv6. Even this 'introductory' video is too technical for me in parts!; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wa7y3W2DI0&feature=related

One thing I do remember reading last year, when IPv6 Day was held, was that it wouldn't have much impact on home users until the majority of ISP's enabled the new protocol on their servers. I assume that will cost money so they'll only do it when IPv4 addresses are closer to exhaustion.

EDIT: Attempts to post the video URL seem to produce a 'freeze frame'. Go to www.explania.com and search 'What is IPv6?'

I am using a wireless linksys wrt160n router with a linksys AE1000 usb adapter on windows 7. Up until now I have had no problems. A few days ago, I came home to find that we had had a blackout. I had no connection and could not seem to fix it.
Up until that time, I've always used my network connection 4 for internet access but no matter what I did to I couldn't get a connection. So I thought if I disabled this connection and then enabled it that somehow it would reset itself and I would have a connection. Unfortunately when I disabled it there was no option for enabling it because it disappeared. I currently am using network connection 6, but my internet is at a crawling speed.

I searched on how to reinstall network connections 4 and found this page http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-TCP-IP-settings
At the bottom is says to "To install IPv4, run Command Prompt as an administrator, type netsh interface ipv4 install, and then press Enter." I did so successfully and restarted my computer like it said to after inputting the command. But when I brought up my network connections, there was no network connection 4.

I even went to the command prompt and typed ipconfig /all and the IPv4 entries are not there like it used to.
Any help would be appreciated.

thank you

Cannot access the Internet after version 10 is installed on my desktop.

A:Network protocol missing after version 10 update

I have a laptop, I found after installing up dates after initial windows 10 install and restarting, I could not connect to the internet and error was missing protocols etc , while I am computer illiterate I rummaged around and found, That by turning off my laptop and then turning on, there was no error and I was connected to the internet, if I just restart the laptop then the error is back and so is loss of internet connection, so while this may be unrelated to your problem and I have yet to get this problem resolved it may help someone get connected, so turn off, not restart.

I have a strange problem with my uncles desktop pc. That pc has to be always on for video recording but once in a while Windows will automatically reboot and i just can't exactly find out why.
But why i did found out is that he's always getting 3 error messages (in the Windows event viewer) about 20 min prior to the unplanned reboot.
These are the error message in the event viewer:
1) The following fatal alert was generated: 10. The internal error state is 1203 --> Schannel ID3688 --> time: 19:00
2) The same as above on the exact same time with same event
3) RDP protocol component X.224 detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client --> TermDD ID50 --> Time: 19:48 (about 25 min prior to the reboot)
Who can help me out here. This is driving me crazy. Sometimes we miss days of recording, while we aren't using that PC for other things.
Thanks in advance!

I did quite a bit of online research prior to asking my own question, but none of  the solutions I've found online really pertain to the issue we're experiencing.
We have 2 Windows 7 Pro PCs in the office.  They are accessed via RDP from within the same network/location.  The systems that are accessing these 2 PCs are an XP Pro machine and a Mac.  The clients stay connected for randomly lengths of time
(no longer than 1 hour) before the session goes black and disconnects them randomly.  When the disconnect occurs, it's not due to inactivity.  The user has to wait several minutes before they are able to reconnect.
On the Windows 7 PCs, Event Viewer gives:
Event ID: 50  The RDP protocol component X.224 detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client.
Event ID: 56  The Terminal Server security layer detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client.
I've seen suggestions of checking registry keys and a lot of suggestions regarding Windows Server and Terminal Server, but they don't apply to our situation.  Please let me know if more information is required.  Thank you!

A:The RDP protocol component X.224 detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client.

Do you enable the
IEEE 802.1x authentication?

Regarding the issue, I suggest updating the network adapter driver manually on Windows 7 PCs. Also update the router's driver and firmware.

If the issue persists, you could disable the TCP Offload. To do this,

Run the following commands on both the client and the server to disable NIC offloading.

netsh int tcp set global chimney=disabled

netsh int tcp set global rss=disabled

Modify the following registry key to disable netDMA on the client and the server.

Note: If this registry entry does not exist, right-click Parameters, point to New, click DWORD Value, type EnableTCPA, and then press ENTER.

Value: 0

You can also refer to the following KB to troubleshoot the issue. Hope it helps.

(I have Windows XP) I was trying to clean out my computer for more disk space, so I was deleting files I thought I didn't need in my Program Files. I have a habit of deleting by using SHIFT+DELETE, which permanently deletes the file without sending it to the Recycle Bin. So I went into a folder titled "Bin" and deleted a bunch of what I thought was gibberish (weird file names). I also deleted other things I thought were unimportant.

Who would've thought that after doing that stupid act, I can no longer upload files, send files, OR view videos in my Windows Media Player.

ANOTHER THING: It also sometimes gives me an error message saying Windows met an error and had to close. I was viewing My Computer when it happened, and when I clicked more info. it said that I was missing an Internet Protocol (IP)..so I'm wondering how I can get it back?

Someone please tell me what I'm missing

Hello, there is quite a number of threads on this topic, and some suggested approaches. The problem appears to arise with build 10586 (the 'November upgrade').

It could also help if you complete your system specs (esp what type of wifi card you have e.g.).
(If unsure how to do that there is a Tutorial - see link above)
Do you also have this problem with an ethernet connection?

This refers to the build change and suggests a somewhat radical command:

A quick scan of these threads suggests:

I am trying to set up my Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). I am not sure of the IP address for my computer (one of four connected to broadband through a lan in my office). I forgot to note it down when reformatting my hard disk recently. But I have a good idea of what it might be since I have the IP addresses of the other three computers. Unfortunately I am not in a position to contact the Service Provider and no one here seems to have the list of numbers.
What I want to know is this?
Are the Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS Server addresses the same for all four computers? Is it only the IP addresss that is different? It will be easier for my (by trial and error) to hit on the right IP Address if that is the only address I have to worry about.

For some very weird reson, my mom's computer will not automatically insert the (http://) protocol in Internet Explorer 6 SP2.

In other words, if I were to type "www.google.com" into the Internet Explorer address bar, nothing would happen. No search page saying the file cannot be found, nothing. It will remain at the webpage that it is currently viewing. If I were to type "http://www.google.com" into the address bar, it would work fine.

If you are not running a VPN connection IPSEC is not needed. If not you can then disable the protocol to stop the error from occurring.
For your second problem I had not a clue so did some searching and I found:

Run exctrlst.exe (Extensible Counter Listing Tool) from the resource kit (see the link below for download) and disable the counter if you don't use it.
As per Microsoft: "The extensible counter list utility (EXCTRLST.EXE) is used to obtain information about the extensible performance counter dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) on a computer running Windows NT/Windows 2000. This utility lists the applications, drivers, and services that are registered to provide performance data through the performance registry. You can use this utility for finding information and for troubleshooting"

According to a user: "To fix this error, I had previously used the EXCTRLST.EXE utility and disabled the performance counters. This stopped the error message appearing in the event viewer, but I still did not have a server service in Services and I got an error message when clicking on shares in Computer Management. I have an old Quantex laptop that was handed down to me running windows 98. I had it all set up with a D-Link wireless card to a D-Link wireless router. It was working fine. It stopped working and like an idiot I pulled out the D-Link card without disabling it while the laptop was running. I have installed and re-installed the D-Link drivers and software and have no problem connecting to the router. The problem is I can't get to the internet because the TCP/IP protocol is missing - I can't bind the D-Link card to the TCP/IP protocol. When I try adding a protocol the window comes up where you highlight what you want to add - protocol, adapter etc. I highlight protocol but nothing happens.

What can I do to get the TCP/IP protocol back?

TCP Protocol Controls Routers

POSTED: 4:47 p.m. EDT April 20, 2004

A flaw that could potentially disable large parts of the Internet has sent security experts and governments scambling for a cure, technology Web sites and other sources reported Tuesday.

The problem is with the Transmission Control Protocol, which lets servers that send out information and routers, which decide how it is transmitted, to work together.

Britain's National Infrastructure Security Coordination Center said it could be a critical problem. The advisory says that flaw could be exploited if long TCP connections are shut down unexpectedly.

These are known as "reset attacks," according to News.com. A security researcher named Paul Watson discovered the problem.

An expert described the problem as affecting the glue that holds the Internet together.

Wired.com reported that there has been a secretive effort over the last few months to fix the problem.

Previously, it was thought that there was only about a 1 in 4 billion chance of someone guessing the information needed to cause a reset; Watson showed that it can be guessed within four attempts.

Tuesday's announcement came just two days before Watson is scheduled to present details of his work at an Internet security conference in Vancouver.

Watson predicted hackers would understand how to launch attacks "within five minutes of walking out of that meetin... Read more

A:Protocol Of Internet Backbone Vulnerable To Hacks

How Internet Infrastructure Works
Content provided by HowStuffWorks.com

One of the greatest things about the Internet is that nobody really owns it. It is a global collection of networks, both big and small. These networks connect together in many different ways to form the single entity that we know as the Internet. In fact, the very name comes from this idea of interconnected networks.

Since its beginning in 1969, the Internet has grown from four host computer systems to tens of millions. However, just because nobody owns the Internet, it doesn't mean it is not monitored and maintained in different ways. The Internet Society, a non-profit group established in 1992, oversees the formation of the policies and protocols that define how we use and interact with the Internet.

In this article, you will learn about the basic underlying structure of the Internet. You will learn about domain name servers, network access points and backbones. But first you will learn about how your computer connects to others.

A Hierarchy of Networks

Every computer that is connected to the Internet is part of a network, even the one in your home. For example, you may use a modem and dial a local number to connect to an internet service provider. Or you may use a cable modem or DSL connection. At work, you may be part of a local area network, but you most likely still connect to the Internet using an ISP that your company has contracted with. When you connect to your ISP, you become part ... Read more

Hey everyone, i'm new to this forum due to the problems i'm having with vista. I recently purchased an HP laptop that runs on windows vista. Currently we have 5 computers in our house, they all run on windows XP. We have a Belkin wired and wireless router and a surfboard SB4100 cable modem. Time warner is our internet provider but we have AOL through roadrunner and we are billed from AOL. All our computers that run on XP work fine with no connection problems. The vista computer will not connect to the internet. It connects to the router fine but cannot get an internet connection. I took the laptop to a friends house and there everything works fine and it gets and internet connection so theres nothing wrong with the laptop. I have called AOL, Timewarner, and HP trying to get some answers. after being run in circles by all of them i finally got someone through AOL that told me that because we are billed by AOL they only allow a certain protocol or something through our internet connection. He said that vista does not work with that protocol and the only way that the computer will ever connect to the internet at our house is to cancel the AOL service and get roadrunner from timewarner which uses a different protocol(TCP or something like that) I am wondering if this is true or if there is a work around for this. Thank you very much for all the help.

Sate of connection = red 'x' over network tray icon.

Can't connect through wireless or wired connection. If I try automatic troubleshooting, it says it couldn't identify the problem. I've tried Googling for a while, and have tried Winsock/Winsock2 reg key deletes, several netsh cmd resets, uninstalled and reinstalled hardware/routers (through software, not physically).

In device manager, I have the Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller and Realtek RTL8191SE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter both running (supposedly). Initially, they both had caution symbols on them, but i uninstalled/reinstalled, and now they are clear of symbols. In "IPConfig", the only thing that appears are 2 VMware Network Adapters (they are supposed to be there) and a "Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface" - not sure what that is.

Something else is definitely a major problem: When I open up "System Information", then navigate through Components>Network>Protocol, the entire list, which should have 10 items, is empty.

Any ideas?

Edit: This laptop's networking has been fine for the past 18 months I've had it. I usually leave it on, but turn it off a couple times a week. Yesterday, I turned it off and had it off for about 10-12 hours. When I turned it back on, the connection was not working and the above issues arose.

Unable to open Microsoft Office documents(excel, word) in Internet Explorer when we enforce strict TLS 1.2 protocol (Disabling SSL v2,SSL v3,TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1)on the webserver. We tested by removing strict TLS 1.2 and IE is able to open the document fine.
Error description : We see a Microsoft Excel Security Warning with the following content.
Certificate error
The application experienced an internal error loading the SSL libraries.

When we disabled SSL V2 and SSL V3, the document opens fine but when TLS 1.0 is disabled we are seeing the  pop-up with certificate error. We tried to open the reports in CSV format, 2007 format and 2003 format and all of them have the same issue. Does
Internet Explorer have any restrictions when TLS 1.2 is strictly enabled ?

Note : We are able to download the document using Internet explorer and the document opens fine from local but opening the document from the browser fails with certificate error.

Help! I replaced a hard drive on an old computer and restored the original programs and everything is fine until I get on the internet. When I go to any site, things are not laid out right. When I go to Microsoft.com and click on "downloads" I get a message "the required internet protocol is not installed".

The old Compaq computer has Windows 95 and IE 4.4 and I'm using TCP/IP. I can't download a newer version of IE because of the protocol error. I've swapped monitors & drivers with my newer computer and I still have the same problem with the old computer.

I've set up my old computer exactly the same as the computer I'm typing on now but the problem persists.

I believe the problem may be my old Windows 95 or IE version. I may borrow a copy of Windows 98 (for test purposes only) and install it and see if that corrects the problem.

Does anybody else have any ideas?

I have installed AVG 8.5 Internet Security for my HP laptop at home. I am using a Sprint Smartview Broadband card to access the Internet. I have set up my Firewall Confirmation dialog in AVG. Once I click on Internet Explorer to browse the web, it goes to the site i want for about 5 seconds and then the webpage changes to this address:http://avg.urlseek.vmn.net/search.php?tbn=...microsoft%2EcomIs this due to my Firewall settings in AVG? Currently, I am set up as "Computer On The Move" in the Network Connection Options. Also, under "Profiles" in the "Firewall Settings" area, under "Computer On The Move", all of my "Defined Adapters" are checked as "Safe". Thanks everyone for your assistance, this is my first post. I've just read the Guardian IT section. It says, inter alia, that IE7 should be installed, also the Windows XP SP2 starter pack. Now this'll sound silly, but I don't know how to tell which version of IE I have. When I click on my IE tab I get Google. I can't find a spec. of IE ; so I don't know if I already have version IE7 or not. How do I find out?

Also, how do I do I find out if I already have the XP SP2,? Anyone, please? (or are you still falling about laughing?)

A:Internet Explorer - what version

To find the version of IE go to the Help menu ( in IE) and click on 'About Internet Explorer'. To find which Service Pack you have right click on 'My Computer' and click on 'Properties'.

I can't install Norton Antivirus 2004 or Mcafee Antivirus, coz my IE version no. is missing. This could be caused by implementing "Hijackthis" while I was trying to get rid of "Trojan Horse Dropper.Small.5.j" virus. Should uninstall my IE and reinstall it afterwards ?

A:Missing Internet Explorer version No.

If you go to 'Add/Remove programs' and click on uninstall IE, you should be offered the option to 'repair' IE instead. Might be worth a try, although it may not work if you're still not completely free of infection.

Can you post your HJT log in the Security Forum for one of the experts to have a look at?
