T540p/T440p+UltraDock+external display issues

Q: T540p/T440p+UltraDock+external display issues

Hi,I'm having some trouble with the t540p in the UltraDock. I have a setup with 3 displays:- internal- external on DVI- external on DisplayPortThe external ones are connected to the UltraDock. I've got the problem, that the external monitor on the DVI-Port blanks frequently (about every 15min) for 2-3 seconds.Less frequently (about once every 1-2 hours) all external Monitors blank for about 5-10 seconds and you can hear in the speakers the Windows sound for disconnecting and reconnecting devices. Another abnormality I discoverd is, that when I use the t540p without the Dockingstation (but a power supply connected) the screen dims down to "battery level" from time to time (also only for some seconds) and the Battery-Symbol changes from "mains operation" to "battery operation" while the brightness is dimmed. This happens with both power supplies (the one shipped with the t540p and the one shipped with the UltraDock) Maybe these effects could be related somehow?Does any of you experience the same issues or has got any clue what could be the problem here? Best Regards,Andre

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

From the Intel Graphic Driver I get the notification when I put the HDMI cable in: "Notification on DisplayPort Topology: A new DisplayPort Topology detected, Click here to configure the topology." When I click on it the Intel Graphic Driver will be opened and I can choose if the display will extend, mirror or single. But if I try to apply for example a extended display, its the same issue. Hope there will be some solution. Kind regards

Hi, I've seen this for many years, on many different ThinkPad models and generations, on multiple variants of Windows (8, 8.1 and 10 for sure, and maybe 7, but its so long ago since we had any 7 machines that i cannot recall if the problem existed then). External monitors on occation blacks out for a few seconds before re-appearing. It might happen multiple times within a minute, or once a week - so it is highly sporadic. I am currently running a P51, but my colleagues in my current department also experience this. They are on P51 and W550s. All my ThinkPads since 2011 have had this: T510, T520, T530, W540, and now, P51. I'm on DisplayPort, and currently using daisy chain to connect 2 external displays (2x Dell U2515H), and my internal monitor disabled but the lid is open.

Hello, I have an issue where the DisplayPort will only out put a max resolution of 2560x1440. I have a Samsung UHD U28D590D external monitor that runs a 4k resolution ([email protected]). If I plug in the monitor using the UltraDock's DisplayPort, my max resolution is 2560x1440. However, if I use an HDMI cable, the max resolution is as advertised ([email protected]) I've tried updating all the drivers on the W550s to the lates, updated the bios, and installed the recent monitor inf file.  I need the DisplayPort [email protected] to work, as that's why I bought this machine! I know the display adapter supports it...it appears to just be a DIsplayPort/UltraDock issue...but I may be wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Jeb

Hi, I'm having an issue extending my desktop to a second monitor. I really don't understand why but I have been using the monitor for some time with no major problems but now I am having a major problem. A:External Display Issues

Are you using the Catalyst Control Center (CCC), or windows itself to do this? By default, when you connect an external monitor to a laptop, the same image (mirror image) of your desktop appears on the external monitor. A Guy

Windows:

Start> Control Panel> Appearance and Personalization> Display> Screen Resolution

If the second monitor is not on list, press the Detect button.

Hi We are having issues with two Elitebook 850 G1 laptops running Windows 10 and using external adapters via the HP ultraslim docking station. It proves to be nearly impossible to come to a stable setup, either the external display is not working, either the laptop display is not working, opening the laptop lid does not work. In short, it?s a mess. Note that this was working flawlessly whit the same machine on Windows 7. Looks like a driver issue to me. Naturally the latest drivers are installed. I recently installed an Elitebook 850 G2 laptop and that one works like it should. This type of laptop has two graphical chips: AMD and Intel. I notice that when I disable the AMD driver the laptop display is not detected. When the Intel driver is disabled the external display is not detected. Maybe someone can explain what is so beneficial in having two graphics adapters. And maybe it is possible to disable one of the two completely and let the machine work with just one? These laptops are not used for advanced graphical work, but their users would be very happy if they could use them with their external displays. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Koen

A:Issues with external display on Elitebook 850 G1

What driver versions do you have? Have you updated the Docking Station Firmware?  There have been a few releases over the years to improve compatibility with displays.  WIndows 10 may "expose" new features that other Windows releases haven't. Dual adapters are provided for performance/battery concerns.  The thinking is the integrated adapter is used for most tasks and uses the least power/battery.  The additional adapter is used when you need more performance/displays/features.

Hi community, we are using several Thinkpads for years mostly without issues. But for a while now we have to experience issues with our T540p's in combination with pro and ultimate docks. And lately we also run into the same issue with a T570.Here our configuration, there are two external displays connected to the docking and one of them is the primary screen. And this is the issue: When we undock the T540p, the internal display should switch to be the primary and only display, but it doesn't. It seems to be that the T540p is still thinking to have external displays connected. The internal display is all black but I can move the mouse pointer from the right into the screen and can also move it out of the screen by pulling it downwards. All windows are opened on the virtual screen, which means I cannot see any configuration windows to change display behavior. Pressing Fn+F7 and up or down arrow blind does not change anything. It does not matter if I undock the T540p while it is running, or if I shutdown the system before undocking. When this error occurs it also does not matter if I connect an external display to the T540p directly, I still cannot see anything. To set the internal display to be the main display before undocking does not change the behavior anyway. If I put the T540p into the docking again, mostly everything is fine. The two external displays are running as before. If it was a desktop PC that would be fine but it is a notebook and we need to carry it with us an... Read more

My internal display just stopped working for no reason with Windows 10. The external monitor still works fine though.I checked the Device manager, the internal display had disappeared from the Monitors section, only my external monitor was listed there. It had happened twice. I brought the display back the 1st time after I uninstall the monitor driver and re-installed the latest driver from Lenovo website, but this time it's already with the latest driver and the same trick did not work.Luckily I still have a clone image of the system with Windows 8.1. Once I switched back to Windows 8.1 the internal display worked fine so I think it has to be a driver issue. The display adpater is Intel HD 4600. The internal monitor is the original HD display that came with the laptop. Please help.

If yes, how? Which kind of display would you recommend? Would I need to upgrade the display cables or anything else?

Well, running w7 ultimate on a Dell xps m1330 laptop. Everything looks good, but at work I am connected to a matrox triple-head-to-go device which is connected to (3) 22' monitors (3840x1280 resolution). Now when I connected it, ran the nvidia app, it found it and worked great.

Problem is I get home, no external connected, so running off the laptop with the basic resolution, I am trying to start apps (firefox, stickies, etc.) and I guess they were in other spots at work as I don't see them. I forced a close on FF, then re-started, rt clicking and maximizing which worked, but then other apps like stickies don't have that option. An alt-tab shows it running in the lower right (see screenshot), but there is absolutely no way of getting to the app! I did close the app completely and restarted, but it does restart in a location not on the screen.

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

Hi guys! I'm really having a bad time, my laptop is currently unusable since the backlight is not working on either the TN panel or IPS panel that I have for it. when I first got the laptop it worked fine, allthough it ran a bit hot 65c idle. So I decided to change the thermal paste for with some Arctic Silver MX-4 and the idle temps dropped to 43c idle, a very nice improvement if you ask me. Then I decided to change the awful TN panel that it came with since I've done that a thousand times before with other laptops, so I went ahead and ordered one from eBay (it came from UK) since I did not want to risk some china panel potentially breaking my precious new laptop. when I got the new panel, I turned off the laptop then removed the battery and pressed the power button for 30 seconds, then porceeded to take the bezel off and remove the "old" working display and install the new display. No problem.... or so i thought... There was only a black screen when i booted it back up!turns out that the backlight was not working (I was shining with a flashlight and getting a picture on the monitor itself)I then did the same procedure and replaced the "new" monitor(IPS) with the "old"(TN) still no backlight... I really needed it for my school, so I went to a local PC-repair shop that could fix things such as laptop. thay said that there was 3 possibilities:broken monitorbroken motherboard (GPU is soldered on motherboard)borken cable from motherboard t... This monitor is called Samsung Syncmaster t240hd. Its an hdtv monitor with 1920 x1200 resolution for monitor. I believe if used as a TV, its 1920 x 1080 though but i wont use it for tv. Anyways, the first thing i noticed was the monitor isn't straight. If you look at it from the side, it looks like its slouching. Is there a way to fix this? Thus adjust it a bit higher?
The other thing is when i look at numbers/words, its a lot harder to read than my old monitor? Thus you see its much easier to read the same thing on my laptop screen compared to this monitor. My laptop is dell xps 15 9550 and very nice. But its just harder to read on this hdtv. I tried making brightness higher than 45 and this makes it much worst. The lower it is, a bit better but its just harder to read on it. Basically its looks very yellowish? For example when i go to a site on another forum, where most of it is white... if i open the same page on this monitor, its yellow. Its a really ugly color and just hard to look at the screen.
Can someone tell me how i can fix this issue? Also i wasn't aware of this but this hdtv monitor has glass over the monitor. Is this how all hdtv monitors are? Is that the reason why its harder to read on this as oppose to a regular monitor?
Are there settings i can change that i can make reading words and letters much easier?

New ThinkPad T440p and the first issue I encountered is there is no option to disable the touchpad when an external mouse is detected. I don't want to do it via the bios or some other hack as I use the touchpad when it is not convenient to use an external mouse. So it should be able to do the switching as needed, this is a simple feature that other manufacturers have had for years and years.  I already upgrade the UltraNav Driver to the latest v18.0.7.57 and that didn?t present a solution. I am running Windows 7 SP1 - 64bit.

When I boot up without a connection to an external monitor I experience some display issues with text sizing of certain objects within certain applications (e.g. Microsoft Visual Studio).  In these applications parts of the User Interface display perfectly.   Other parts of the same application will have vastly oversized objects and text.  And, in another application the text is greatly undersized in certain portions of this app. When I boot up while connected to an external monitor everything displays perfectly on the external monitor.   This happens without making any changes whatsoever to system display setting or application configuration settings.  If I disconnect the external monitor the X1's internal monitor still displays everything perfectly.   But if restart while disconnected from an external monitor I experience the same display issues as described in the 1st paragraph. I don't think this problem was always there, but  I cannot say for sure.  It just got so annoying that I finally decided to write to the forum today.   I would guess that the problem has been this way for 1-2 months. The Lenovo System Update app tells me that everything is up to date.    Is there some setting or perhaps driver that needs to change? Tim

Basically whenever the screen has to turn black and reload new graphical settings. Graphics drivers are all up to date.  Can anyone help me out here?

This happens as soon as the VGA adapter is plugged in. Unplugging it does not turn the laptop screen back on. Toggling with the function keys does nothing. Since I cannot see anything I cannot try to adjust/correct display settings (or do anything for that matter, other than turn the laptop off by holding power key down).

The second display works (tested with a different laptop).

History: The external display worked fine with this laptop. We had a power failure yesterday which turned it off. The screen toggled to the laptop successfully (or I did, with the function keys--I don't remember) and I continued working. When power returned I started running into this issue. I reinstalled the display drivers from the original manufacturer disc but the problem persists.

My ThinkPad T500 running 64-bit Windows 7 Professional Edition worked great on and off a mini docking station with 2 external monitors. The dual-display setup allowed me to have more desktop space; when needed, I can take the laptop off the docking station (following undocking steps) and use it anywhere. This convenience no longer holds after upgrading to Windows 10.

With the T500 in the docking station (LCD lid closed), I can use the dual-display setup as in Windows 7. However, after shut-down and remove the T500 off the docking station and the T500 laptop becomes unusable because its LCD display doesn't show anything after boot. (While booting the laptop's display shows the ThinkPad boot logo and then some DOS-mode boot messages and then the windows 10 logo and its dotted spinning wheel; after the initial boot the display went blank and the Windows 10 desktop doesn't come up.)

The only way to make the T500 laptop usable on its own is to go through a "preparation procedure" and here is how the procedure goes: While the T500 is on the docking station in the dual-display setup with the 2 external monitors, open the T500's lid and set its display as the main display and then select to disconnect the other 2 external displays (in the Settings -> System -> Display page); then , in the T500's LCD display, select the shut down. Once the T500 is properly powered off, remove it from the docking station and the T500 can work on its own as a laptop supposed to be. W... Read more

My P50 display is great on its own or when I have it connected to an external display and use both.  But once I disconnect the external display the fonts are WAY too small and unreadable.  Any way to fix that?

Hi, I have X270 model 20HMDOSUS. Wanted to buy UltraDock. They came in 3 flavours: with 65, 90 and 135 W. Which one is enough for me? The laptop came with 65W USB-C power supply, so I assume 65 W would be enough, but prefer to ask.

I have a T470p, with a 170W UltraDock, and a NEC MultiSync EA275UHD 4K monitor.I use NEC SpectraView to color calibrate my monitors. The UltraDock DisplayPort  connector does not support DDC/CI, and I am forced to connect the monitor using the notebook's direct Mini-DisplayPort, obviously very inconvenient.  How can I get the UltraDock to support DDC/CI, so the SpectraView software can communicate with the display?

I have 3 Dell U2414H monitors that support DisplayPort 1.2 daisy chaining.  I purchased the T440s with docking station.  The laptop arrived before the dock.  It has Windows 8.1 Pro x64 running.  I setup the monitors to daisy chain off of the T440s miniDP port.  I got exactly as I should.  3 separate monitors.  I could maximize windows inside a monitor and they'd maximize to their monitor.  I could drag windows between monitors.  Everything is working. When the dock came in (today) I left the monitors daisy chained.  I did change out one cable (that I know is working) so that the DP input would attach to the dock's DP output.  I am not getting a picture on the monitors.  If I use just one monitor, and turn off DP1.2 (in the monitor's menu), I get a picture on one monitor.  Do these docks not support daisy chaining?  I've verified that I'm on FW 2.17 for the dock.  I also want to submit a support ticket with Lenovo, I just don't know how to do that yet.  Thanks!

I'm seeing the same issue, same monitors. If I plug in the DP cable directly to the laptop and it works fine. If I go through the dock, it doesn't work. I'm using Win7

Just bought a new UltraDock from Lenovo (to replace the older version that made external speakers buzz loudly when computer was powered off) and am finding it is a bit flakey when my T460p is docked. The problem seems to be the computer does no quite click in properly -- sometimes the display or keyboard will stop working, only to be bought back to life by me pushing down on the computer to re-establish the connection with the dock. Sometimes the display will start to pixelate, only to return to normal when I press down on the machine again.  I can't tell if it's the computer's docking port or the port on the dock itself that is at fault (or both). My T460p does have the extended 72Wh battery -- could that be sticking down slightly too far and impeding the dock connection? Either way, there's no firm "click" that I used to hear in the past when connecting to a dock. More of a faint click that suggests things are not quite connecting fully. I'm also able to lift up the back of the machine and disconnect it from the dock even when it is supposedly locked into the dock using the dock key. Surely this can't be right? Anyone else having such problems? Do I need to send the dock back?

A:T460p bad connection with UltraDock

I have two docks, one at home and the other at, well, my other (vacation) home. I had some issues getting my T460p to seat at first, but I don't seem to be having that problem anymore.I occasionally have issues with the T460p properly recognizing the displays attached to the docks, but a sleep/awake cycle often fixes that. It definitely stays locked in place when I turn the key, though.

I recently hooked up a secondary monitor to my ati 9800 XT, and its crap!

It's a Goldstar Stuidoworks 76i monitor. I have a dvi-vga adaptor and a regular vga-m/m cable. the problem isnt with the dvi cause if i plug my good monitor into the dvi adaptor, it works well and the 76i is still blurry.

the problem is if i change the resolution to anything greater than 800x600, the picture gets very fuzzy, and unusable. i've tried lots of different freq. combinations, and tried changing the colour as well. i looked all over for drivers for the monitor but i didnt find any for XP, i found something that was basically colour profiles, i loaded them, but they didnt change anything.

am i forgetting something? or is the monitor just CRAPOLA?

thank you so much for your help!!

A:Fuzzy Secondary Display? 9800XT dual display issues.

Well since you checked to DVI adapter with another monitor I say your monitor is going bad. How old is it? There might be a label with the year on it the back. I have seen this happen to monitors only old 3 years old but usually it monitors older than that.

Other signs indicating its near death is a high pitch whine at higher resolutions or max brightness and contrast.

Tell us what you find.

The Ethernet port in my Thinkpad Ultradock 40A2 won?t connect to the network anymore, and displays a status of ?Network Cable Unplugged? even though there is a verified working connection plugged into the dock.  This dock had worked flawlessly for four months until yesterday when I needed to use the Ethernet connection on my Thinkpad T450s (undocked).  Previously I had only used the laptop undocked in WiFi mode.  My T450s? Ethernet port works as expected when undocked, but neither the laptop Ethernet nor the dock Ethernet work when the T450s is docked. I have tested this connection with different cables, routers, and laptops to verify 100 percent that everything downstream from the dock is working correctly. I then upgraded (via WiFi) all drivers and BIOS for the T450s and upgraded the Ultradock Firmware.  Immediately after that, the dock Ethernet connection worked until the laptop was rebooted then it reverted to the adapter status of ?Network Cable Unplugged? in Control Panel>Network Connections. My wild guess is that after enabling the T450s Ethernet port something in the OS is forcing the Ethernet port on the laptop to have priority over the dock Ethernet port, but the T450s? Ethernet port is designed to not function when docked.  I have no idea how or where I would investigate or change this behavior.  Ethernet has priority over WiFi in advanced settings. Should a second, separate Ethernet adapter be show...
