Mouse problem: Any external mouse. Touchpad OK. Mouse OK in Safe Mode.

Q: Mouse problem: Any external mouse. Touchpad OK. Mouse OK in Safe Mode.

Hi guys,

New here, so I hope I'm not out of line asking for help, and that I'm asking correctly. I've exhausted my own ideas on this but the problem is driving me IN.SANE.

When using an external (USB) mouse with my ASUS Win7 laptop, the mouse randomly lifts up and re-clicks while clicking or while dragging (despite the button remaining consistently depressed), resulting in selection of the wrong objects, inadvertent double-clicks, and incorrect dragging. From what I can tell, this affects only the left click and not the right.

Laptop touchpad - no problem. Everything works fine with the built-in touchpad.
Another mouse - same problem. These are wired mice, so it's not a battery or connection issue.
Another USB port - same problem in all four. There's no visible issue with the motion of the mouse/cursor, so it seems to be communicating OK via USB.
Safe Mode - no problem, from what I can tell. The wired USB mouse seems to click and drag as normal in Safe Mode.
Mouse Settings - no effect. Adjusting the click/double-click/drag settings doesn't seem to change anything.
System Resources - no effect. Clicking/dragging seems to show the same results in the RAM/CPU monitors whether I'm having the problem (with the mouse) or performing the same actions without the problem (with the trackpad).

What haven't I ruled out? What else could be causing the issue?

The problem came on suddenly after about a year, but I can't pinpoint the moment, because I didn't use an external mouse for a while (maybe eight weeks) and when I plugged it in again, the problem had appeared. In that time, I don't think I had installed any new software or made significant (voluntary) changes to the PC.

As a designer/illustrator, it's frustrating to use the touchpad for detailed vector work, so I'm pretty crippled by the loss of the external mouse. Does anyone have any ideas at all about what I've overlooked? Even a clever workaround would be really helpful, if there is such a thing. I'll be very grateful.

Preferred Solution: Mouse problem: Any external mouse. Touchpad OK. Mouse OK in Safe Mode.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hey mate, and welcome,

Possible problem:
1. Mouse itself is bad. Either the button itself or internally
2. Driver is not at its best

Going to the mouse manufacture website to download the most recent driver for your Windows 7, either 32 or 64 bit. If it doesn't work, try without any driver (so that windows driver takes over).

Troubleshooting a fairly new HP laptop. Had been infected with a virus. Cleaned it all up but was experiencing erratic mouse behavior. The customer claimed the behavior started when he got hit with infection. While the pointer itself moves fine the left and right mouse buttons intermittently act like they are being held down causing the pointer to drag and highlight everything in site. At other times the buttons do nothing at all. At other times the left mouse button triggers a rightclick menu. And at other moments all mouse control is fine. This occurs equally on the touchpad or when using an external USB mouse. I tried disabling the touchpad completely but the problem still occurs when using the external mouse. I tried updating the sypatics touchpad driver but that made no difference either. I finally resorted to wiping and completely reinstalling windows but the problem still persists. For the hell of it I then updated the BIOS firmware but that made no difference either. All keyboard function work fine so I have been having to resort to using the arrow keys and alt tab and such to navigate around. I ran a Passmark Burn in Test and everything passed.
A couple of additional points. I ran the Hirens Boot CD which is similar to the Ultimate Boot CD. I then booted into the Mini Windows XP and the same erratic mouse behavior occured so this is clearly not an operating system issue. Also when I wiped and reloaded Windows I used the HP Recovery partition and ran thei... Read more

Hi,It appears I somehow deactivated my touchpad or something along those lines as my mouse pointer/cursor has completely disappeared? It was working fine yesterday, and I think the only thing that might have triggered this is that I accidentally pressed some keys (unsure of which ones, so I don't even know how to reverse it). I've tried restarting, as well as looked through some of the mouse/touchpad settings to no avail. If anyone can help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it (I'm currently relying on my fingers and the touchscreen which isn't as convenient)

The other day my computer started constantly right clicking by it's self, when i left click it also right clicks, and the actual right click does nothing. I've been trying to get into safe mode or recover to a previous restore point but mashing esc, f8 or bleep+f8 don't do anything... Just boos as normal... I also tried reinstalling the driver, no change.
Does anyone know how I can fix this problem, or how I can access the advanced restore/boot options?
I'm using windows 8 on an Acer Aspire 4810t.

A:Constantly right clicking mouse problem and can't access safe mode =(

I'd try booting from a repair drive.  On a working Windows 8.1 system that's current with Windows updates, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Recovery applet and click the option to create a repair drive on a flash drive.  Once created boot from it on your system and do a repair.
Good luck.

A:Touchpad not working, usb mouse does, touchpad never works even w/o usb mouse

Hello Tristan,

Welcome to the forums.

Been a while since I had a laptop, but I seem to remember there being a setting on what to do with the touchpad when the mouse is plugged in. Unfortunately I don't remember where and have no way of finding it.

Have you tried rebooting with the mouse unplugged?

Sorry I can't be of more help. The manual for the laptop ought to have that info in it somewhere.

I probably spilled some coffee on the keyboard and now I can not inactivate the mouse pad in favor of the external mouse. The only way I can eliminate the conflict is to uninstall the mouse pad. That works fine but every time I reboot for something I have to uninstall it again. As you know rebooting is common and therefore I have to reboot twice for every time I have to reboot. Anyone with a solution to this problem? This is a HP laptop. The mouse automatically installs everytime I have to reboot. I do not shut down normaly. Just close the lid. But there are enough times that this problem is annoying.

I have been posting to so many forums. The thing is, I can't format my machine, it belongs to my company and I have already requested it to be reimaged and this is the 3rd time. I ran the dell diagnostic test, and I still can't find any error and that means I can't get Dell to replace my motherboard..although I think something is wrong with my USB.

Its just that I notice that the windows desktop icon, or any application seems to open faster when I use the touchpad to double click. I actually just tap twice on the touchpad. This is without the USB mouse connected.
However, when I connect to the USB mouse, all windows apps, icons opens slowly. It kinda like take longer and the notebook freezes for 1 - 2 second..Its not smooth. I have tried everything..every single thing..reinstalling the drivers..and whatever..and no error code...with dell diagnostic..how am I gonna get them to change the usb ports..when there are no errors..

Please help

I use an external USB mouse most of the time. I must disable the touchpad via control panel each time I start or restart the laptop. I want to disable the touchpad except when I wish to reactivate it for temporary use without the external mouse. The system is a new HP Pavilion dv6 with Windows 7. The touchpad is a Synaptics TouchPad V8.1.

A:[SOLVED] Disable touchpad w/ external mouse

Usually there is a touchpad icon in the lower right corner of the Taskbar. You might find a setting there to disable the touchpad. Some laptops have an on/off button just above the touchpad, but you can accidentally turn it on.

You could also disable the touchpad in Hardware Manager. This is a more "permanent" solution, because you would have to go back into Hardware Manager in order to re-enable it.

First thought: check the Asus website and see if there is an updated Synaptics driver.

Second thought: go to Device Manager and uninstall the touchpad, including the driver (if asked). Restart and then re-install the driver, then see if the setting will stick.

I am trying to find a way that the touch pad and trackpoint will disable when I connect an external mouse.  Other computers I've used have a setting for this, but I can not find one the Carbon X1. I don't want to disable them permanently (or at least not both of them) for those few times I'm not using an external mouse. My preference would be to disable one permanently, and the other only when an external mouse is present. Thanks

I have a Yoga 920, which replaced my Yoga 3 Pro, and I love it dearly. I have adjusted to the tiny up/down arrows OK. My only real complaint is that I keep activating the touchpad whilst typing, and since I have an external mouse that I use a lot, I don't really need the touchpad. I would like to automatically disable the touchpad whilst using the external mouse, at least when typing. I decreased the touchpad sensitivity but then the touchpad doesn't work that well when I don't use the external mouse. I can't find any place in Settings or Control Panel or any registry hacks that apply to this model of laptop that would help this. (I'm using to twiddling Synaptics settings but this laptop doesn't have any.) Thanks for any help.

I have a Dell Dimensions computer running WIN98. I installed Norton 2005 and did some Windows updates last week. After rebooting, I get what looks like safe mode and no mouse recognition. I don't get the notice that my computer will boot in safe mode like it has in the past. Any suggestions?

A:Safe mode and no mouse

If you think you might be in safe mode do you see safe mode in the corners of the screen saying safe mode. If not i would not say you are in safe mode.

If you need a good anti virus grisoft (www.grisoft.com) makes a MUCH better one, they offer a free one that is great and a pay version there's costs 30-35$ same as Norton but that 30-35$ covers you for 2 years of updates not 1. There antivirus is called AVG, I started using it about ten years ago and never looked back and never a ISSUE using it.
I would say get rid of NSW (Norton system works) 2005. Norton is known for causing issues.

But as far as the mouse make sure it is plugged in, and if that don’t work borrow one and see if it is the mouse or the PS2 port that it is plugged into.

I have windows xp and I accidently unplugged my mouse with the computer on q. how can I get into safe mode using my keyboard to enable the mouse again

A:get into safe mode with disabled mouse

Assuming that your keyboard is functional there are a couple ways you can try.

On boot, as soon as the first screen appears, press F8 repeatedly until a menu appears.
Use the keyboard cursor directional keys to select "safe mode" and press "enter." The computer should boot again and the screen will have low resolution with the phrase "Safe Mode" in the corners.
Boot Into Safe Mode from Windows

Click on "Start", then "Run". In the empty box, type "msconfig" and hit "OK"
After a window pops up, select the tab that says "BOOT.INI".
Look at the bottom of the tab and find the "SAFEBOOT" option. Check the box and the click "Minimal".
Click "restart" and the computer will go through the procedures for rebooting in Safe Mode.
When you are done with Safe Mode, you will need to access MSCONFIG again and uncheck the "Safeboot" box to return the computer's settings for a normal boot.

Help please.. I have spent the past 8 hours trying to get my laptop to work. I have an asus U43 series with windows 7 home edition. I was browsing the internet and my mouse stopped working. I started the computer again but the mouse will only work on the log in page at the beginning of the start up. I restarted the computer again and again but on the 7th time or so, it would only go to black.. Hours later of me hoping it would finally load, I turned the computer off and took out the battery, blowing into it like you would an old nintendo game. This allowed me to access safe mode (finally!) and I got on this site.. Please tell me what's going on.. Normally I'm good with computers, but I've never had this problem before

Thank you in advance :)

A:Why does my mouse only work in safe mode?

You say it's on a laptop, so you are referring to the touchpad or a plug-in USB mouse? If the latter, have you installed any third-party driver software that was supplied with it? If yes, uninstall that software and see if the mouse works without it (all mice will work for basic functions using Windows built-in drivers without needing to install any others).

When something works only in safe mode it almost always points to a third-party driver being the cause. Maybe the driver software supplied with the mouse isn't compatible with Windows 7.

This should be simple...

I can boot into Safe Mode. That's cool. Safe Mode - Start Windows 10 in - Windows 10 Forums

Unfortunately, I cannot use my USB mouse. I can use it in BIOS, but not in Safe Mode. It is attached to a motherboard USB header, directly, just like the keyboard. The keyboard IS usable in Safe Mode, so at least the USB drivers seem to be loading. (USB keyboard, if I have not made that clear.)

The keyboard is a Logitech G110. In Safe Mode some of its functions (lit keys, for example) don't work. However, tab, control, the Windows key, etc., all work. Good enough.

The mouse, a Logitech MX518, does not work. That makes it extremely hard for a non-expert user to get around windows. (Oh, it was a LOT of fun when I used the msconfig technique to boot into Safe Mode. THAT took quite a bit of fun to discover that Win-R would bring up the run window so I could tab along to deselect Safe Mode. LOL... Like I said, a "non-expert".)

Is there any way to load mouse usb drivers in Safe Mode?

Edited to add: I have a second machine, call it "B". In Safe Mode, its Logitech (G9?) USB mouse works. Where/how do I find the settings in "A" which will make it work like "B"??? Is this a BIOS function or a Win10 function?

A:Safe Mode: USB mouse won't work

Make sure both the mouse and keyboard are plugged into black USB 2.0 ports and not blue USB 3.0 ports.

Gateway GM5661e
Windows Vista Home Premium
Intel® Core?2 E4500 dual core processor
?Installed: 3072 MB DDR2, 667 MHz, (PC2-5300) dual channel memory
500 GB, 7200 RPM, SATA II hard drive

All appears normal, but after touching the mouse the problems are apparent. The mouse freezes all over the screen. I have to do a large sweep and then tiny micro-movements to select and icon. The programs load super slow and the mouse is skipping all over the screen. When the Pc is turned on the gateway screen is on for over a minute then the monitor turns off and then back on the loading bar pauses many times as it starts up. It eventually loads, but then the mouse doesn't move. The pc makes a grinding, clicking sound when the mouse moves, but then the mouse freezes and the noise stops. I am at a loss for words. I have been through a lot with this pc from last month when it stopped turning on. It has come a long way and I feel like it am almost done, but something isn't right. I am hoping it is not the motherboard, but I cannot think of anything else it could be.

These are the steps i have taken to fix my pc.

Checked PC to make sure drivers were up to date.
Defragged the hard-drive
registry cleaner
Removed all dust
replaced thermal paste on cpu
Did a recovery that formatted the hard drive and reinstalled the OS
Installed Antec PSU
Replaced CPU Fan
Opened safemode and mouse still freezes

It seems that as soon as the Pc starts the problem ... Read more

A:Mouse freezing in and out of safe mode

First I would advise you never use a registry cleaner unless you know exactly what it is removing, they can do more harm than good.

My first thought is that your hard drive may be failing so please follow this guide to run the manufacturer's diagnostics.

Identify the make of your hard drive and then use one of the links below to get the manufacturers diagnostic for ISO CD. Burn the image file to a CD, boot the PC with the disc in the drive and run the diagnostics. You first need to set the CD drive to 1st in the boot order in the Bios setup.

If you do not have an image burner use this free software to make the CD.

If you have a Toshiba hard drive I would suggest the use of the diagnostics from the Seagate link as this will work on all makes of drive and on any OS.Click to expand...

My 4-year old Gateway laptop (running Windows Vista Home Premium) just froze last night. Tried restarting it, and every time I get to the Windows icon I get a frozen mouse on the login screen or a blank screen. Sometimes, it makes a sound like someone is pressing one key on the keyboard with the Windows icon in the background. When I shut down and restart in safe mode, I am able to use both mouse and keypad. I am able to login in safe mode and safe mode with command prompt, but not safe mode with networking (same result as starting in normal mode).

I have used the install cd, and tried all of the options on the repair menu. Nothing has helped - neither startup repair, nor system restore. No memory errors were detected, either.

Acc. to the system restore menu, the last windows update was early last week (and I have been to use the computer without any issues until late last night). Also, I have McAfee AV, and it ran without detecting any issues 24-hours before the problems began.

Any ideas on what I should try to fix this problem, other than reformating the harddisk? I am not very tech-savvy, so if you want more info, I'd appreciate you walking me through the process. Thanks in advance.

A:Mouse and keypad frozen in normal mode, but work in safe mode

Hi Horan. Welcome to TSF!

Since you are able to boot into SAFE MODE with COMMAND PROMPT, do that and then at the prompt type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotation marks) and let it run. After it completes that, make a note of any messages and then reboot your system and see if that helps.

Also, what happens when you just use the touchpad and don't plug in a mouse? Any difference or does it still lock up?

Good day!

New ThinkPad T440p and the first issue I encountered is there is no option to disable the touchpad when an external mouse is detected. I don't want to do it via the bios or some other hack as I use the touchpad when it is not convenient to use an external mouse. So it should be able to do the switching as needed, this is a simple feature that other manufacturers have had for years and years.  I already upgrade the UltraNav Driver to the latest v18.0.7.57 and that didn?t present a solution. I am running Windows 7 SP1 - 64bit.

A:Thinkpad T440P no option to disable touchpad when external mouse is connected

It's technically part of the driver, so try the registry edit here if you can't find the option in UltraNav settings:http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-turn-off-touchpad-when-mouse-is-connected-in-windows-78-1/

Hello guys,
I recently bought a Dell I15 5557 with touchscreen and I got a issue with its touchpad.
There is an option in Windows 10 which turns off the touchpad when an external mouse is present, but it appears that the touchscreen also counts as an external mouse. As a result, the touchpad is always disabled when this option is turned on, even if an external mouse is not connected.
Is there any way to automatically disable the touchpad when an external mouse is connected and the notebook have a touchscreen?
Thanks in advance

Hello everyone. I have a Compaq SR1954NX Desktop computer that I recently reformatted and installed Windows XP Pro SP3 on. After installing some games and applications, a few days later I shut the computer off for the night. Upon the next morning my USB Mouse, a Creative Fatal1ty 1010, stopped working on it. If I unplugged it and plugged it in a different USB port, it would say "Found device, Creative Fatal1ty Mouse, Your Device is now ready to use." However it still would not do anything. However, upon entering safe mode, it works fine.

I reformatted after this, as I thought it was my mistake, and had only installed one or two small games. However, it just happened again.

Can anyone here help me with this? Thanks in advance.

I've spent the last two months just trying to get Windows to operate correctly on a new Mac. Unbelievable! I've re-installed XP SP2 too many times to count, finally had it up and thought it was running fine for the last week, then I went over to the Mac OS tried accessing windows through boot camp, it shut down the Mac OS, then when I tried to go back to boot Windows directly, I received the damning <windows root> \system32\hal.dll file is missing or corrupt - again.
I've gone through a bunch of posts, tried a number of the instructions, and now have a worse issue; my computer is now stuck in safe mode in Windows, from using instructions of Apple's Discussion page. I'd disabled everything on the Start Up Tab in Configuration Utility and checked start up in safe mode there too, so now I can't get out of it, and since my mouse and keyboard won't operate in safe mode, I get to the log in page to select user but the mouse just won't move and pressing "CTRL +ALT+DLT" no response.

In the Recovery Console when I ran CHKDSK /r this is what it came back with...

90877508 kilobytes are available.

406 bytes in each allocation unit.

So what does that mean? Not sure what the " volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable p... Read more

My Cursor stays frozen in the center of the screen and will not move even in safe mode.

I believe my touchpad is broken so I want to use mousekeys.

When I look at the device manager I can't see the mouse or pointing device section,

When I go to the control panel I go to the "mouse" section and there is no section for the touchpad and no driver for the mouse section.

There is something quite strange happening because I remapped the number pad and when I press these keys the icons on my desktop are highlighted and move in the correct direction as if I was pressing "tab" but the cursor will not move it stays in the center of the screen.

I have tried to install all the new drivers (all 5)recommended for my Asus K40AB AMD Athlon(tm) X2 dual-core 64 ql to no avail.

My laptop doesn't appear to have a function button that turns the keypad on and off

Bottom line, I want to be able to use mousekeys because some programs don't allow you to use keyboard shortcuts such as "Drivermax"
