Custom printing behavior

Q: Custom printing behavior

I am trying to set up a computer to print to a given file (originally an XPS file with the MS XPS Writer driver) without giving the user an option to change the name or location of this file.

Setting this up in most commonly used software, although a pain, is a possibility. However, I would prefer to setup the XPS writer as a printer with this already set up to ensure that all print functions are sent to this printer and handled in this way.

I would greatly prefer a non-commercial method, something I can set up myself.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I hope someone can help me work this out, it's driving me crazy!
I'll try to explain it in as few words as possible!
There is a website we need to access on which we're having trouble getting some of the buttons to display.  In short it works when the internet zone is set to "Medium" but not when it's "Medium-High" (I have added it to trusted sites
but in properties it shows as "Unknown Zone (Mixed)" so seems to use the "Internet Zone" settings.)
I am trying to track down which security setting is causing the issue.  To do this my plan was to make a note of all the settings that differ between Medium and Medium-High.  However if I set it to medium-high and manually change all the settings
to be identical to medium it still doesn't work... yet if I use the "Reset to: Medium" option at the bottom it does work!  This doesn't make any sense to me.
Are there other hidden stetting affected by the "Reset to" option that I can't change manually.
Any help would really be appreciated!  Thanks!

Hello. Thanks in advance for anyone's help. I'm setting up a home office and the only thing I can't figure out is a printing issue. I have a customer that requires I type information on a pre-printed form, like a contract. I want to scan the form in, then type in the fields I need, then when I print, use their forms and just print on the form what I've typed in those fields only. I just need it to print in the right area of their forms. I'm not sure how to accomplish this. I have an HP Laserjet 3015 and full Acrobat Pro, if that helps you give me some advice.

Thanks so much!

My 8550dt does not take the inputs for custom size paper I specify in the print setup. I will specify 5x7 paper and the control panel on the printer is asking for 8 x 11.67, for example. I have tried multiple drivers. This is the 5th xerox phaser printer I have owned and have never had this problem before. I print invitations and it is very important to be able to print on different size papers. I am running Windows 7 if that may be an issue with this problem.

Ok.. I'm just throwing this out here...it's darn late hihi

I have written a 'program' (script), which will automate a recovery system for windows 7, full with a working bootmanager, (custom) partitioning, ramdisks, custom environment (winre/pe), and backup imaging , all legal and licensed according to microsoft as long as its not distributed (aka single computer [home] end user).

I decided after hourrrrssss and weeeks of reading, researching, testing, failing, testing again, reading again, installing F amounts of programs, running sysprep, MDT2010, WAIK, dism, imagex, winpe, winre, bootsect, bcdedit, you name it, I came to the conclusion.. I gotta write something up for the other poor souls around out there.

I'm not going into more details now, but I was thinking of writing this up in c++ or so and asking for donations, which will entitle support in the odd event it would not* work in your case.

However, to just test it all that it works, I wrote it in scripts (batch and vbs) which I realize now I never shall do again :P (more an OOP man myself)

I write programs normally so dealing with exceptions extensively in batch is just .... well about as time consuming as 20 % of the time I spent on R&D on all this.

Anyway, I am wondering, given I always been used to the share way, if there are people who actually are willing to donate 5 bucks or so, on a script which would take about 2 hours max to execute to set up a total personal home recovery partition system. This me... Read more

A:Easy Custom image + custom recovery OEM like system?

OKi.. update. I see now more how this program will work. shame its all working fine with .hta, .vbs and .bat.
ANyway, a full gui app will be present in windows 7 and lets a person set up all his wishes and desires for how he wishes ot have his recovery partitions system set up, incl. the option of other partitions to include in this.

When everything is done, a mikepe disk is created (a custom recovery disk which inclues a wimpe native application of this program ) which will run the precompiled settings from win 7 and will rebuild the partitions, all ready to go. It will also link this system to one single computer only (due to licensing issues and piracy protection.. I'm guessing the latter is easily hacked lol). Anyway, after that, it's all just some hours of installoing, setting up, and voila off to go.

A base windows 7 installation (no extra programs), will create a recovery partition of ~ 3 GB and will be redeploiyed all set to go with your own old account and password in less than 5 minutes.

If you add all your own programs etc, the rebuild can take up to 1 hour.

Still much faster than installing windows, changing all your settings, creating yoru account, installing all those programs... etc.

Will also I think add several boot options, as to recover damaged boot loaders, including support for adding boot entries and back up of linux, vista, xp any OS partitions. You will also be able to give the boot entries any name u fancy like:

Your paper size is called 8.5x13in.
Go to Page Layout tab - Size and scroll down to 8.5x13in and select it (see first screenshot attached).

Then on the same tab go to Margins and click Custom margins (see second screenshot attached). In the new window change margins to desired size.

Hi all,

I've been trying to find a way to add my own icons to libraries that I make. I have tried navigating to:

And after right clicking the Library I made, I don't get an option to change the icon. Is there any way to do this? It would just be easier to tell the difference between user-created libraries if the icons could be changed, instead of only using the one default icon provided.

I've tried searching through the tutorials section, and looked through the first five pages or so of results that came up from a search here on the forums, and haven't been able to find the info I'm looking for.

Thanks for any help!

I have a problem I have never seen before on serveral computers running Office 2000 Professional on Windows 98 SE. When you click print, the printer dialog box does not appear. Instead the title bar and the bar only the bottom begin flashing. If you click on the flashing bar the print box appears and it will print, but Word 2000 closes. Has anyone seen this before? I can't find a mention close to this anywhere on Micorsoft's Knowledge base or the Internet. It is somewhat intermittent but it now happens on several different computers. All have current Antivirus protection, latest Windows Critical updates. All systems have Office SP1 installed and some have SP2 and SP3 installed (it does not seem to make any difference).

These stripes correspond to the lines of words, meaning if there is a line of words then there's stripes but no stripes when it's a blank line. I have been using a network capable HP LJ 4050T, which i added an HP Network card too, for years as a network printer. I dis-connected it and moved it to a different location and now i can not get my pc to print to it.

I have win 7 64 bit. I have tried the universal drivers and the drivers built in to win 7 mainly HP Laser Jet 4050 PCL 5 and or the 4050 PS driver (all of which work for at some point in the past, but now no longer will do the trick). After installing the driver i can get the printer to add to the list of devises and appears to be installed correctly. I can ping the printer however when i try a TEST PAGE it will give error message "Error - Printing" very generic.

Frustrating thing is that i have this issue every time i disconnect the printer, it takes multiple tries getting it to connect (i.e. installing drivers and uninstalling, rebooting, re-setting settings etc.). I work at it for hours and then what seems to be by luck something i previously had done will work this time, or something i found online will work. however this time I've tried all those things and others without success. It almost seams that i have to trick the computer till it lets me print to it.

In the past i was able to get my Win XP laptop to print to it as well but i have not been able to re-connect this for over a year.

A:Printing Error When printing to my networked HP LaserJet 4050

When you disconnected the printer did you turn both the computer and printer off and disconnect both from the mains power supply. There is no reason why they should not talk to each other if everything is turned off before one or the other is moved as it would be no different from turning them off, not moving the printer, then turning them back on again.

You don't say whether the printer/computers are hard-wired or wireless networked.

Have you tried going into a program like Word and hitting Ctrl-P and telling it to search for a printer? If the driver software is on the computers it should connect.

A:How can I stop printing things that are printing endlessly

Bit difficult to answer as you do not say what printer you have but it would appear that you had or still have documents in the "Print Queue" If you open the queue you can cancel all the waiting docs!
Try thiss:
With the printer switched off, open a document and click Ctrl + P (Or File then Print) This will open a window telling you to check that the printer is connected. Somewhere on that small window should be a button that reads something like "Print Queue" or View Print Queue". Click that and in there you will see a list of docs waiting to be printed. There you will be able to delete them. The queue builds up when you have a problem when the printer doesn't print for some reason, either it has got disconnected, is not switched on, is out of ink etc. You keep pressing "Print" and nothing appears to happen but the queue just gets bigger and bigger. When you get the printer working again it automatically prints all the docs in the queue. Moral to the story. If you have a printing problem always check the print queue before proceeding!
EDIT Please make sure you come back here and let us know if the above works for you or not as I notice from your previous threads that despite expert help you never give any feedback. You will get much better help if you at least come back and report if the solution worked!

You need to delete everything that is in the print queue. The best way to do it is first open the RUN command. Then type in SERVICES.MSC.When the box opens up, scroll down to PRINT SPOOLER. Right click and chooseSTOP. Then open up the PRINTERS folder which is usually in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SPOOL.Open the PRINTERS folder and delete the files in it. You then must go back andrestart PRINT SPOOLER.

One of the Windows components in Windows 7 is the Internet Printing Client. Maybe it was there in Vista or earlier, but if so I never noticed it. I've discovered in the past the Microsoft (and other companies) often use 'Internet' as synonymous with TCP/IP. Is that the case here?

I never print across the Internet-but I do have several printers on my local network that use TCP/IP. And I know it's easy enough to remove this client & see if I can still print to my printers-but it doesn't seem like I should have to figure things out by trial & error.

Do you know whether or not this 'Internet Printing Client' is needed to be able to print to any TCP/IP printer, whether it's actually on the Internet or not? Thanks.

Now we have upgraded the printer to a Laserjet 1022n, and the barcode parts are coming out all jibberish. The text for the item description comes out fine, but the barcode parts are jsut a bunch of characters. I changed the printer type in our software from Laserjet II, to Laserjet compatible 150DPI, and am getting the same results. I'm not sure where the problem is here, and will appriciate any input. The other settings in the Software remain unchanged, such as Lines per inch, and characters per inch. i'm not sure if those need to be changed as i'm not sure how it would affect the barcode.

Have you had problems trying to disable your sound when printing on a Dell printer?

I recently installed Windows 7 and have a Dell printer (not sure if this happens with other printers) and every time I go to print it says "Now Printing" and at the end it says "Done Printing". I found this quite aggravating.

I did find a page on this website that had corrections for Vista, but not Windows 7, and the steps are a little different.

After trying to go into CONTROL PANEL and SOUNDS, I found that readjusting these settings did absolutely NOTHING to get rid of these announcements.

After some more of my own trouble-shooting, I figured out how to get rid of these announcements for a DELL printer:

1. Click on the Windows icon on the bottom left of your screen and scroll up to DEVICES AND PRINTERS and click on it.
2. Left click on your selected printer (will have green check mark) and scroll to PRINTING PREFERENCES and click on it.
3. A box will pop up. In the upper right hand corner, click on OPTIONS and scroll down to PRINTER STATUS OPTIONS and click on it.
4. Another box will pop up. Click on the circle to the left of 'Never Display the Printing Status' so that the circle becomes blue. Note: selecting this option will disable your printing announcements, but it will ALSO disable the box that pops up during printing that shows your ink levels and percentage of printing completed. If you want to continue to see this printing status box, you will have ... Read more

A:Windows 7: Disabling printer sound "Now Printing" and "Done Printing" for Dell

2. If this does not work, try IE/TOOLS/Internet Options/ADVANCED/ . Here scroll down to the end and you will find "Empty Temporary Internet Files...". UNCHECK this. If you still seem to have problems, repost.

I'm brand new to the forum and looking for help...

Within the past month I bought a new HP dv9000 laptop with Vista Home Premium pre-installed. After playing with the bundled accessories and investigating the new O/S features I installed my favorite software. Somewhere along the line some of the multimedia features got clobbered. The first clue was that MPEG files would not play in the Media Player or Media Center. I somehow managed to get that resolved only to find that the "QuickPlay" did not work (HD-DVD player). While trying to download and reinstall software for that, I discover that Internet Explorer is behaving oddly.

Even on run-of-the-mill web pages, some/many graphics dont appear at all, or are represented by the all-to-familiar square and red 'X' icon. Right clicking the "red x" and looking at the properties tells me it is sometimes a GIF image, somtimes a PNG image. I'm guessing that the image is supposed to be part of a web page control of some sort, because many menus across the tops of pages have the "red x" icons or just text, but don't do anything when clicked.

More concerning is that buttons don't appear when they should. For example, trying to download Java 6 and or Flash player, the download web pages have some of the "red x" icons and such, but no buttons to perform the actual downloads. Its like Internet Explorer has lost its ability to display and/or run controls or something.

This computer has a PX865PE/P motherboard and I'm having some problems with the AGP port on the motherboard. Assume that I'm using analog for all of this besides where I said I'm not. The computer originally had a Gigabyte Radeon 9200. When I boot without changing anything, I wouldn't get a signal on the monitor and I heard no beeping. If it switched over to digital, I'd get the same results. The card is definitely getting power - the fan is spinning. When I put another graphics card in, it didn't work at first, with one mid-length beep at boot, but after taking it out and putting it back in it worked. Everything loaded up fine, but at the Windows logon screen it just did the same thing as the other card. I rebooted and it wouldn't work, with the mid-length beep again. Then I took the card out and put it back in and I got some fuzzy colors on the screen. I don't remember exactly, but they were changing color and I think they were going horizontal across the monitor (looking similar to 2D mountains). My monitor was also switching from analog to digital, like it usually does, trying to find a signal, even though I could see a picture on analog. I'm not sure whether there was a beep or not, but I don't think so. I restarted a few times, and the same lines appeared. I took the card out and put it back in and I got a mid-length beep again. I took it out and put the Radeon back in and got the same results as before.

For boot problems you could try Startup Repair. I'd suggest running it 3 times rebooting in between each scan even if the scans are coming back with no issues found. You could also look through the troubleshooting guide prepared by one of our Forum experts.

Startup Repair

Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

As to the computer freezing, it would help to know what you were doing at the time (watching a video, downloading a file, surfing the net, etc.) You could try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two) to rule out damaged or corrupt system files. If problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan. You could also look through the general troubleshooting guidelines prepared by the same expert Forum member.

In addition to my previous post, I have a home PC which is working... marginally.

I'm running a Dell 8400 (something) with a 3.2GHz Processor, 1Gb RAM, and a nice sized HD. (win XP home edition) The graphics card is a AGP nVidia 6800, with digital out. The monitor is a 15" VGA LCD.

The problem is that a while back I started having difficulty booting the PC. It would turn on, make all the HD noises, spin the CDROMs, chunk the Floppy, but wouldn't display anything on the monitor. After much swearing, cussing, and waiting, the PC would boot fine, but wouldn't recognize the graphics card. It would boot in 640x480 resolution and in 16-bit color.

I fixed this by downloading the latest drivers and installing them. This seemed to work, for a while. But the problem kept happening. So my solution was to never turn the PC off, but set it into stand-by mode. I would also get warnings from the nVidia graphics drivers that the power was low and that the card would reduce it's graphics output. Then, it suddenly stopped turning back on, so I bought a $20 GeForce 4x00 cheapo-card and at least the video works.

And now my system battery is low.

In addition, I've bought a lynksys G and B wireless network card and sometimes that card isn't recognized by the PC (when coming back from stand-by), so I have to reboot to get the PC to recognize it.

I plan on getting a new System Battery, but I want to find the root cause of all these probl... Read more

Change the extension of the file from from .TXT to .REG and Double click the file.
When the box pops up asking which program you want to use to open the file, click Browse, then navigate to your Windows directory and choose regedit.exe.
Select OK to merge the file in your registry.

That will repair the executable file associations, but it doesn't mean all the infections are removed. If you need help removing any additional viruses or Malware, follow these steps to create a post in the Security Center

I was recently employed at a school district's IT department, and one teacher sent a help request on a computer that "crashed with the error "OUT_OF_MEMORY"."
I thought this was strange. Especially since the PC in question was an Alienware! (the district was so rich they had to donate money or they would reach the limit on their 3 accounts!)
So I turned it on, and opened Task Manager.
300 instances of Explorer.exe and growing fast!
I used taskkill to kill all of them and restarted the first Explorer (that way the desktop and stuff work) and everything works OK. No more multiple Explorer processes!
I wrote a script to end them all and restart it and made it run after ~5 seconds once everything was loaded.
It worked, but it infects routers. It infects endpoints afterward, using HTTP packets and redirecting to the router, where the code is injected into the cache and set up.
Has anyone encountered this before?

A:Has anyone seen this behavior?

No, but that sounds incredibly strange. Must be a prank pulled by a student.

I have a quad core cpu. The performance monitor shows 3 cpus with close to zero usage and the 4th at close to 100% usage.
Is this a hardware or configuration problem?

A:cpu behavior

What is the make and model # of your computer or if a custom build the motherboard and processor? Have you gone into the Bios to make sure all CPU's are enabled? Are you only running one process? Run Process Explorer to see what is taking up the CPU.

My system is not a gaming system at all, but I ran games like Call of Duty 4, 5, MW2, BioShock, Fallout 3, Gears of War and Oblivion with good looking settings and good performance, problem is, since a error I received in Assassin's Creed II, I can't play any game at all, I've already tried downgrading the driver, formatting the PC, but none of that seemed to work.

I get no error message, the games run smoothly for 10 minutes or so, and then some weird stretched textures appear, it keeps up a little farther and then everything freezes and I have to reset the PC. In some of these freezes some green and pink dots appear all over the screen, pardon me if I'm posting in the wrong forum but I think it's a graphic card issue.

By the way, I have

GeForce 8400GS, 2GB of RAM, AMD Athlon X2, 500W power supply

and I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate Build 7600 x86

A:Odd behavior.

Indeed you certainly don't have a gaming rig. I think it is simply a matter of not having the proper hardware to run those games. After ten minutes or so, your computer starts to run hot, and your parts are truly pushed beyond their limits, resulting in the crash. But by all means wait for a second opinion.

Hi,There's nothing suspicious in your log.Concerning NETframework 1.1 service pack1. Take a look here:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824643/Extra advice... Recently when I use my mouse, the cursor goes flying off in a different direction. I can be right in the middle of creating a mask in Photoshop, or simply perusing websites in a browser and "zing!", off it goes. Now that is my (Old style) wired mouse. My wireless mouse is acting lethargic and, well, for lack of a better word, queasy. It wiggles and acts strange. What in the world is going on?

A:Mouse behavior

Here are a few tips:

Check the surface the mouse is used on. Is it clean? Smooth? Consistent surface texture?

Is the bottom of the mouse dirty? Clean the sensor, and the feet.

Does your wireless mouse need new batteries?

Are these old mice? Even though the last a long time, they don't last forever.

Can you test with a different mouse? Maybe borrow someone elses for a few minutes.

The other day my internet browser closed it's self and a windows security center looking program popped up and started flashing at me that I'm riddled with viruses and spy wear. Since then most programs will not open. I ran Norton (when I still could, I can't now.) The scan came out clean. Below is my hijack this log.

I’m having a problem using a JS behavior with links within frames on a few of my webpages; I want to have my links and images change while having the text stay the same, but the problem is having 2 frames work in unison while only using one link.
Example: say I have one webpage made up of 3 frames; a main image frame that covers the left center portion of the page and 2 frames to the right stacked on top of each other; the top right frame is used for information pertaining to the image shown to the left; the bottom right frame is used for the navigation (nav buttons are: reverse, forward) to move through the images in the left center frame.
Ok, so now I want to update two frames at once, so when either the "Reverse Forward" links are clicked they work in unison with the image to the left (i.e. "Forward" brings up new image, "Reverse" shows previous image); I've tried attaching the JAVA behavior “Go to URL” to my first link, "Forward" in the nav frame. This works well. It produces a new link replacing the previous and shows a new image in the left frame. Great! But then on the new link, "Reverse Forward" I click “Reverse” to go back to the original link & image, the link changes back but the previous image won’t revert/replace. Namely, I think, because this new link "Reverse Forward", is on its own page and has no frames to tell the “Go to URL” behavior where to go, so I can only tell the “Reverse?... Read more

I installed Oblivion game of the year. As I see it, it requires internet connection for a short time at the beginning of the installation. So I concluded that this is the securom/DRM thing.

I played the game in administrative a/c without problem. But when I switched to a limit user a/c the game asked for a new configuration* then when I started to play, the screen became streaked with different colors. What is your explaination?

NOTE: windows XP x64 but the above problem is not likely due to OS.
* This is unusual because it has never asked for new config in any other games I played. This is most likely due to the securom/DRM thing.

A:Oblivion behavior ?

Basically the Black Macbook is limited by it's small low performance integrated video graphics card which has only 64mb video ram. This means it can't process video quickly and it can't load a large amount of graphics onto the card.

So games that run large environments like Oblivion, Far Cry, and etc will most likely not work. But games that run in a smaller levels like Unreal Touranment 2004 will have a better shot.

You can give Call of Duty 4 a try, but at the most optimistic level is a so-so performance at lowest possible settings. That is if the game even allows you to load the game, some games detect that if you don't meet certain video requirements won't even let the game run.

If your not sure, try downloading the demo versions and installing it and work with the settings.

Today I've been receiving pop ups that tell me my system is infected and needs to be scanned (it seems like a scam, so I cancel the scan). Also, sometimes when I click on links, Firefox downloads the .php file of the webpage instead going to the address of the link. (This problem started at the same time of the pop ups.) Here's my log:
