External Hard Drive not reading

Q: External Hard Drive not reading

The other day I was using my external hard drive, Adaptec USB 2.0, when my dog stepped on the cord and unplugged it. Ever since then, when i plug the hard drive in, it has the normal recognition noise but never pops up. So i went to the 'safely remove hardware' option on the desktop. Every time i try to safely remove it, it has the loading icon and does nothing. Then whenever i restart or shut down my computer, it continually loads until i unplug my hard drive. Once unplugged, the computer acts normal.

I was wondering if there was any way i could fix the problem and get the hard drive working again.

Preferred Solution: External Hard Drive not reading

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

external hard drive no longer was reading as removable storage. It was only reading as local disk and the files did not show up, but the properties showed 211 gb of space used. I took it out of the case and hooked it up using a switching adaptor and a usb to sata and ide adaptor. still reads as local disk, but now shows my files with all these funky characters and also when I open my computer it shows the H: as a bunch of those funky symbols too....I did a backup in May of everything, but really would like to get the pictures off of the drive that I took in the last 4 months. any help would be appreciated.

I have a Seagate Free Agent Desk 1TB external hard drive that i have had for a little over a year.
When i plug the hard drive in to the USB and the power source, the hard drive spins and clicks, but nothing shows up
on the computer. The blue light on the drive does not eluminate when plugged in either. The drive worked properly
on two different laptops before, now all of a sudden it is not being recognized by either laptop. I tried the Disk Manager
and the drive did not show up in there either. I recently backed up all of my personal files on to the dirve before reformatting my laptop, but I did ensure that the files were on the drive when i double checked on the second laptop. now that i have reformatted the hard drive on the main laptop, the hard drive does not work. I can not reformat the drive, I have a lot of important information on the drive.
The laptop i am currently using is an IBM Thinkpad running windows XP.
Please tell me that the info is not lost.
Thanks for any help!!!

I have myself an external drive that I've been using for a few years, and before I got a replacement to back everything up, it seems that my drive is no longer able to be read. I'm pretty sure it's an issue with the drive itself. After plugging it in, the light will turn on, and I can hear the drive motor running, but it seems to be "idle" running and unable to boot up.

Is there anything I can do to attempt file recovery at home?

I recently got a seagate ata notebook hard drive, and am using it in a usb hard drive enclosure with my laptop, vista basic 32bit. Whenever I plug it into the computer, I can see the 'safely remove hardware' icon on the taskbar, and i can view its hardware properties in the safely remove hardware window, but otherwise my computer does not read the hard drive. For instance, if I have it plugged in and I open 'my computer', the window freezes and I do not see the hard drive. If I were to unplug the hard drive while still in the same window, the window would unfreeze and I would see the hard drive for a second, then it would disappear.

-The hard drive works fine on my computer that runs in windows XP
-I have tried other solutions where I delete DRVINDEX.DAT, INFPUB.DAT, INFSTOR.DAT, INFSTRNG.DAT, INFCACHE.*,SETUPAPI.*
-I have also tried restarting the computer with it plugged in; the computer stays on the loading screen before the password login for about 30 minutes, then may turn on (but I will be able to use the hard drive!)
-I have tried using each USB port
-Once in a blue moon, when I plug it in I will see an icon in the taskbar that says 'your USB device can run faster' and tells me to plug it into a high speed port highlighted in bold, each being empty (i think they're all high speed ports). Upon which, I can use the hard drive and it takes a minute to load

My dog recently desrtroyed my labptop, and for the past 4 days I've been trying everything I can think of to recover data from the old computer's hard drive. my latest attempt was to plug the old hard drive into a hard drive enclosure. Both the USB cord and the enclosure work when pluged on they're read as a USB mass storage device however as soon as the hard drive is plugged into the enclosure th computer fails to read anything, nothing appears under my computer, device manager, or disk management.

The Hard drive is a Seagate Momentus 7200.3

I'm worried my external hard drive is dying. Whenever I plug it in I get prompted to scan for errors and read and writing to the disk to insanely slow all of a sudden. I've tried it on different USB ports and with a different cable just to eliminate those variables.

It's a 500GB Verbatim Portable Hard Drive (this one I think but a little over a year old now http://www.verbatim.com/prod/hard-drives/portable/acclaim/)

I'm hoping there's a way to fix it as right now getting a new drive is a little out of my price range but I'm not really sure how to troubleshoot this sort of thing.

When i plug it in, it recognises, it shows up in my computer, but when i double click the icon, it tells me "please insert a disk into drive w:" and it won't let me access the drive.

I have tried restarting computer, safely removing and re-inserting the drive, and changing the disk letter via the computer management tools.

Is there anything else i can do?

Hi there,

I won't get too deeply into the harrowing saga of how two external hard drives of mine died within days of each other. Rather, I'll just say that I would like to do a virus scan on several external hard drives (including/especially the one I just got to replace the others). In other words, I want to find out if there was a virus or something in the material that I'm putting on the hard drives that makes them die. Could this be possible? If so, how can I conduct a virus scan specifically on the external drives?

I'm having a problem with my internal DVD Drive. It is detected in "my computer" as well as in Device manager, however, it does not read any CDs. Oddly enough it reads DVDs. Also when I use an external drive it reads cd's perfectly fine.

Here are the things I have done so far. Updated the drivers/firmware for the internal DVD drive. Delete the upper/lower values in the registry editor pertaining to the DVD drive.

If anyone has any other suggestions I would love to be able to burn CDs without having to use my annoying external drive.

Thank you very much for your help.

I used a Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus to backup data in Vista 32bit, then formatted HDD and did clean install of Windows 7 64bit over it. Now when I go to "Computer Management > Disk Managent, it says "You must Initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager Can acess it". Because it's asking me which partition style to use (MBR or GBT) I'm assuming that "initializing" will wipe my data....Is that true?

A:Win 7 Not Reading External Drive (with backup data)

Yes, do not initialize the external HD.

Plug external into another computer to see if it sees the data.

Did you leave the external plugged in during Win7 install?

It should not have been affected as Win7 installer will not recognize external HD's.

I want to get an external hard drive/dvd burner combo if there is such a thing. To make this question as simple as possible...I need a hard drive that my camera can be plugged into with the firewire. I also need the hard drive that is able to plug in to the USB2 slot on my computer, because
my new Dell doesn't seem to tolerate a firewire card which I installed and then took out and returned to the store. It froze my computer and I tried everything to stabilize it but had no luck. It did work long enough to download 10 min. or so of video and I burned that onto a cd. Thats when I found out I had a dvd-rom not a dvd burner......long story I know. Sorry. I just want to figure out the most economical way now to save my movies and burn them to dvd also using either another external dvd burner or maybe there is a hard drive/dvd burner combo?? Or should I just get two separate externals?
Again: I need the hard drive/burner to plug into my computer with usb2.
Then the firewire from the camera would go into the hard drive/burner to download the movies.

Hey guys.

My hard drive which i've been using to store movies, suddenly stopped reading on my computer. I have had it plugged into my computer for like a week, i unplugged it and forgot to do the safe eject thing. The computer was off though. I gave it to my friend to borrow, and apparently the hard drive didn't work. it did not read at all. So he gave it back to me, and i tried it at home, i plugged it in, the light on the hard drive is on, but i waiting several minutes and the hard drive just did not read. i tried plugging in my other usb to see if its my computer's problem, but it isn't.

Is there a way for windows xp to read it somehow? like to check if its plugged in or is reading?

Surely the hard drive aint broken?

A:Hard-drive Not Reading!

You can make sure the hard drive is not broken by connecting it internally after removing it from the external case.
Disconnecting external drives without the safe eject only can cause harm if the PC is on and the drive is being accessed while you snap it out.

A:hard drive reading as (I:)

When you want to change drive letters, follow these steps:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
2. Under Computer Management, click Disk Management. In the right pane, you’ll see your drives listed. CD-ROM drives are listed at the bottom of the pane.
3. Right-click the drive or device you want to change, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
4. Click Change, click Assign the following drive letter, click the drive letter you want to assign, and then click OK.

You will not be able to change the boot or system drive letter in this manner. Many MS-DOS-based and Windows-based programs make references to a specific drive letter (for example, environment variables). If you modify the drive letter, these programs may not function correctly.

Hey guys!

My Zune 80gb stopped working a while back. It wouldn't charge. So I thought I would take out the hard drive and use it as an external 80gb hard drive. So I bought an 1.8" ZIF encolsure for it and installed the hard drive into it.

All appears good with the installation. When I plug the hard drive into the PC the light on the hard drive enclosure comes on and stays on & the disk starts spinning. Then Windows Vista does the whole "Install new Hardware" thing and calls it a "Disk Drive" and a "USB Mass Storage Device" and says hardware is installed and ready for use.

But the problem is I can't seem to access the drive. I can't find it anywhere. It doesn't show up as a drive I can use or anything. I tried a third party partitioning prgram to try and find the disk so I could reformat it but it wouldn't it couldn't find it either. I even plugged the drive into my Mac thinking that Disk Utility might be able to recognize it and let me wipe it, but the Mac doesn't recognize it as anything.

Back in Vista, Using Device Manager, Vista notices the drive under the "Disk Drives" option as a "Disk Drive" and that it is elecronically signed by Microsoft (since it has the Zune firmware on it) but I can't do anything with it ... And this is the only place where I can see that the drive even exists. I can't reformat it or anything.

Can anyone help me? I thought I read somewhere... Read more

Even though it is a 120gb hard drive, your computer is correct by seeing 112gb. After the partition, format, this is all you will get out of the drive. I have the same hard drive and my computer sees 112gb also. It is normal. You may get a bit more space if you partition the drive into two.

First off this may be in the wrong section. Sorry if it is, but could not figure the right one.

So, I had a Dell Dimention 2400 which I got a tad bit upset with and kinda destroyed. I realized that I had files on there that I need to have. They are for Quicken 2001 and they were backed up to my documents. My question is this:
My old pc was a Dell, so is this one. The hard drive in the old one is a IDE. If I pull the HD from the new Dell and it turns out to be an IDE can I plug in the old HD, find my files, move them to my external HD, shut the pc off and re install the HD that came with the new pc back into the new pc?

Or will it not work.

If not its fine. I looked online and found that the IDE/SATA to USB cables and power cord is all over the internet for about 25.00.
Maybe someone who knows a bit better than I can give me a link to what I will need to read HD's as another external drive.
Dont mind buying a set, just want to be sure to get the right ones.
