Q: Lenovo Thinkpad W550s Memory upgrade to 16GB and S...

Hey Lenovo Enthusiasts! I am about to purchase the Lenovo Thinkpad 550s, and I am tempted to purchase the baseline memory (4GB) and storage (512GB) HDD. I want to make sure that I can indeed upgrade the memory to 16GB of RAM and the storage to a 256 (or 512) GB SSD. In my research earlier on, I noticed that somebody had posted a link to the parts list:https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/w550s_frubom_20150130.pdf I don't know what half of this technical jargon is, but from what I gather, I have found an SSD made by Samsung on Amazon, and an 8GB memory made by Data Memory Systems that seem to abide. SSD:http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-256GB-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7KE256BW/dp/B00LMXBOP4 Memory:http://www.datamemorysystems.com/parts/lenovo/03X6657/ Questions:1) Could somebody wiser than me please verify that these products will work for the w550s? I was going to purchase them from Crucial, as they say that is is "100% compatible" but I am not sure still.Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Lenovo/thinkpad-w550s 2) In regards to the warranty, does anyone know if I were to mess up the data preloaded on the HDD that is put in the laptop, by trying to transfer it to the SSD, would the warranty cover fixing this? Kind regards,Spencer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Very disappointing. Yes, I have the same problem (son, since it is your problem!). I note that over 189 people have at least looked at this question you asked before we decided to have you purchase the W550S...and after calling tech support one last time after my son purchased the machine (and was told there should be no issue)-we see BSOD multiple times within an hour. They happen so quickly that it is hard to even note what the error message is.... I replaced his 512 HD with Samsung SSD 512GB drive. I used a disk duplicator-everything seemed to go great. Then I put in 16GB of RAM-again, everything seemed great. However, the notebook is only now being used frequently as my son is starting school now-and as said above, the BSOD is making me think this has something to do with the SSD or RAM replacement. Yes, obviously, it's fairly easy to replace with the original parts and see if the problem goes away-but he wanted the SSD and more RAM, so even if that fixes the issue-we will likely get rid of the notebook. BUT: here is what disappoints me: absolutely no comment on my son's original questions. I'm guessing I won't get input from Lenovo either....will try to call tomorrow, but we are almost beyond the point where we need to return the SSD/RAM and notebook if we want our money back. A little guidance from Lenovo would be appreicated before we need to make a decision.. Thanks,Steve

I was wondering whether somebody could shed some light on this issue. I am (as many more I guess) suffering from memory shortcut on my S440. Now I just stumbled uppon a new upgrade option from Curcial:http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct204864bf160b Is this module compatible with a S440 i7 4500u? BIOS might be an issue as far as I read.

A:Thinkpad S440 16GB memory upgrade

No,  It won't work and the problem isn't the BIOS or a Lenovo limitation.  You have a 4th gen CPU  i7-4500u.  The 16GB modules only work on 5th gen or later

Try using one ram per slot at a time to help isolate if one of the memory slot is having an issue.
Using the original ram , try to add the new one , swapping each new ram to the same slot.

10-31-2015 @ 4.25pm On the A740, I figured out that it will allow 16GB laptop RAM stick in its single memory slot. However, I did find out that a 16GB single-slot laptop memory stick will work on the A740and will get you to 16GB memory on only one memory slot (which the A740 has). The A730 was easier because it has two memory stick slots (so you could do 2 * 8gb = 16GB),but A740 only has one memory slot.  Therefore, you can not go with two of the cheaper 8gbmemory, because you have to spend more on the 16GB single-stick laptop.  So, hopethis helps other people.

Inspiron 14z n411z (Laptop): Authoritative confirmation of memory upgrade to 16 GB, 16GB, 16gb

There are various claims that 14z/n411z can be upgraded to 16GB (unofficial or therotical based on CPU-i5 being Sandy bridge)

Here are the main issues on this subject that has left many customers scramble for answers and find themselves confused:
* It is the interest of customers that Dell come out with an official statement "confirming" or "denying" if this is possible
* Yes, at the time of sale Dell stated that max permitted was 8GB. But now therotically (Sandy Bridge CPU can support 16Gb) and based on other users experiments it seems possible, but no concrete/firm proof available.
* If it is possible, Dell can always state that it will not support 16GB, though it (Dell) has tested it as possible in their labs.
* In the absence of a confirmation from Dell, most memory vendors are not selling memory 16 GB upgarde for Inspiron using their "configurators".
* There is another confusing twist to this problem, created by the fact there is another Dell XPS model facing same problem. But they newer CPU, for which most vendors are selling the memory upgrade on their configurators.
* For Dell, most users are now "past their Warranty" period. There is no liability in answering this question. In the LARGER interest of customers Dell should clear this doubt.

Dear Lenovo, I bought a Lenovo W550s laptop last August, and last week I spilled water on the keyboard. Now, about 8 buttons on the keyboard (at least), don't work. I am curious, will the warranty help me in any way with any thing?  Also, I am looking for a replacement (internal) keyboard, and am having trouble finding one. I am pretty sure that the keyboard that shipped with my laptop last fall was not backlit, as the keyboard never lit up (unless I didn't know how to turn it on). Anyways, the Parts No.: 0C44952, ID No.: 57P1ZW, FRU No.:04Y2387, Model No. KM BL-105US.  When I looked up the part on Lenovo's website, it returned nothing: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookup.  So, my questions for you are:1.) Does the Lenovo warranty help me cover my malfunctioning keyboard?2.) Is the keyboard that I have, Parts No. 0C44952, a backlit keyboard?  3.) Where can I get a compatible keyboard replacement for this laptop? 4.) Will this keyboard replacement work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA3DY3CW6149&ignorebbr=1 Kind regards,Spencer

Hi Everyone,I just received my Lenovo W550S and have been simply trying to upgrade the memory all day now with no luck.  I configured my laptop with just 4GB from the factory with the intention of immediately swapping the 4GB for 16GB (8x2)  This is the memory I am attempting to upgrade with:  http://www.pny.com/XLR8_8GB_DDR3_1600_PC3-12800_CAS_9_Notebook_SODIMM_Memory_Module?sku=MN8192SD3-16...  Every single time I try to start up the laptop after installing my upgrade memory I get a series of warning beeps and a blank screen.  As soon as I swap the factory installed memory back in it's back to normal...what am I missing here?  Before trying my PNY memory I tried this with a pair of Corsair 8GB memory modules with the exact same results.  Also I did follow the procedure outlined in the manual carefully (disabling the internal battery for service and whatnot.)  Thanks for your help,Dan

A:Cannot Upgrade Memory W550S

Hi Dan,

I'm out of my comfort zone here, but this may be something to look into:  the RAM you linked is 1.5V memory.  The W550s base specs call out DDR3L (1.35V RAM).  It may be that the RAM slots are fed 1.35V regardless of what's installed instead of auto-volting.

Hello to everybody,Recently I have bought a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 and I want to increase the memory, (by default is 4 GB) to 8GB or 16 GB. if it is possible. My question is if this laptop support without any problems or errors 16GB RAM of memory, because officially it is only 8GB.RAM, but I have seen on internet, people with 16GB Ram in this laptop, Are there any problem with this? If so, upgrade to 10GB or 12GB RAM would be posible instead? Also I want to increase the capacity in my laptop (by default is 320 GB.HDD), and I want to put a 500 GB SSD Disc, and if is possible to maintain both the Hard Disc anda SSD Disc, it would be possible to put SSD Disc into the PCI Express slot and mantain the Hard Disc at the same time. Or the only possibility is to replace the Hard Disc for a SSD Disc?Thank you very much,Regards.

If the memory modules of this type were a bit cheaper I'd give it a try regardless, but I am hoping to hear some feedback.

Welcome to the boards, and to the Lenovo Notebook family... My first one was an older thinkpad, with a "Pentium" chip... Still have it somewhere...

I would recommend that you download the notebooks mainenance manual as it will tell you what parts work with your notebook and also provide instructions on how to change / replace memory modules safely.

At the top of the page click on the support link (right click and open in new tab) then put in your model information.  Once you can select your model and it takes you to your computers support page look for the "Documentation" link at the top, click on it and select your maintenance manual from the list.  It will open in PDF format, you can scroll down to the contents page and click on parts list "overall" to see what works best.

Good Luck.

Now, I am not satisfied with the performance of my notebook with the available 8GB of RAM and it hangs very often and I have to reboot periodically which is painful. I run dual boot with Windows and Ubuntu. As far as I have gone through about the processor of my notebook, which is Intel core i7 5500U it's clear that this chip supports a max of 16gigs of RAM. But, Lenovo U41-70 service manual says that its max expandable upto 8GB only. I dont understand the point here and why it can't be upgraded to 16GB of RAM? Do I need to do a BIOS upgrade to support 16GB of RAM?

Hi there! Searching for a little while now I am wondering why the memory upgrade of my recently acquired notebook does not work as I hoped for. Then stumbled upon this forum so hopefully here somebody is willing and able to clarify the mystery... I did buy the notebook knowing (especially the graphics part of) the processor would greatly benefit from dual-channel memory so I was happy to notice I had two DDR3L-1600 8GB Samsung ones available. Installing was a piece of cake (of course) and the BIOS shows (correctly) two banks (bank 0 and bank 2) filled with 8GB each. So far so good. But then.. starting Linux I had the option of running a memory check: Memtest86+ 5.01 Then things got weird:- At the bottom of the screen Memory SPD information shows two times 8192 MB DDR3-1600 memory installed- Top left of the screen shows: Memory 7114M (???)- Middle of screen shows RAM 474 MHz (DDR3-948) (???) And within Linux I am told I do have about 6.7 GB of RAM installed. I am sure you can imagine I am puzzled and wondering if anyone has similar experiences or, even better, knows a solution.. as far as I can tell the memory should be compatible and I do not intend to buy other memory unless I am sure this would solve the issue. Thanks for reading!

Hello,
Long time Dell user with a 2014 Dell XPS 14 L421X.I'm hoping to give the laptop new life by replacing the current 1x8gb ddr3l with a 1x16gb ddr3l stick. On the laptop's manual, it lists that this model only supports 4gb and 8gb.
Does anyone have any recommendations/advice about upgrading this model's RAM from 8gb to the unofficially supported 16gb? I'd sincerely appreciate a good answer.
Cheers.

My Windows Experience Index was @ 7.4 for the Memory (calculations per second) when I had 6GB of RAM in it. I put 16GB in it and it remains unchanged. My Processor and Primary Hard Disk score actually went up .1 point, lol, I don't know how or why. Anyways, you should know, It is the right ram for my computer, FOR SURE the right RAM. My computer is seeing and using the 16GB of RAM. I don't get it. I ran a memtest and all that. I know the WEI doesn't mean much, but like everyone else, I still get a little annoyed with thisl. Please, if you know anything about this, help me out with some insight. Peace!

The memory score won't change because of more memory. It only changes when there is faster memory put into the computer than what it already has, or if the current ram is overclocked to make it run at a higher speed.

I am the original owner and this has been a great unit for me, that said it has gotten slower than cold molasses. Original HDD is a 500GB SATA 6.0 GB/s, since there is no provision to install a HDD and a SSD I plan to install a 500GB SSD.   I ASSUME since I have an SATA interface I want a SATA SSD.  A Lenovo document suggests a M.2 2280 SSD.  I am not sure what to get.  I don?t know enough about SSDs to make an intelligent decision. My first thought was a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch (7MM)https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd031661 Will the present mounting hardware fit the (any) 7mm SSD   I would appreciate some guidance. 2 ? 8GB sticks of DDR3L memory.  Your thoughts on which brand to get would be appreciated I plan on buying Win 10 Home 64bit OS on a thumb drive for a totally clean install I would ask for your input and guidance please. Larry

Hi, I'd like to upgare my laptop to 16GB of RAM memory. I know that recomened maximum is 8GB but where is the limitation. I read similar posts on this forum that this is down to CPU so my CPU is "Intel® Core? i7-2630QM Processor" According to Intel website http://ark.intel.com/products/52219/Intel-Core-i7-2630QM-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-2_90-GHz this CPU may us up to 16GB of DDR3 1066/1333 Mhz. Also Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit can also utilise up to 16GB of the memory. Where is the bottle neck?

Hi: You can install 2 x 8 GB in your notebook. If you look at the service manual, it is a little confusing... See Chapter 1, page 6, where it clearly indicates 16 GB is supported in the Intel models. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02842278

A:Upgrade RAM for Lenovo YOGA 700-14ISK to 16GB

You cannot upgrade the memory.  There are no slots; memory is chips soldered to the motherboard.

I read it too fast and answered for a 11" model.  You need DDR3L 1600.  You can replace your 8GB DIMM with a 16GB one.  Most brands work, but avoid those with the word "value" in them.  If you buy non-Lenovo memory, always confirm the seller's return policy.

I currently own a Lenovo YOGA 710-14IKB with 8GB of ram and I would like to upgrade it  to 16 GB if possible.I tried searching online to see whether this is possible or not, and got mixed results.I understand there is only 1 memory slot, so I will need to buy a single 16gb RAM card, however I want to make sure that the motherboard will support it..Thank you!

Hello there, i have 2 dell precision 390's that i would like to upgrade their RAM. I recently upgraded the CPU's to a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz and i was wondering if i could do the same with my RAM. Now to my belief i think the chipset in the dell optiplex 755 is the same in the 390 and it could handle 16gb ddr2 Non-ECC. I found a set of 4x4gb DDR2 400MHz on Amazon.ca and i was wondering if the 390 is able to step the speed down to 400MHz or whatever. I also found a set of 2x8gb DDR2 667MHz ECC. Now my last option was this, a set of 2x4gb DDR2 800MHz Non-ECC (i would buy two of these to make 16gb). Which one of these configurations will work on the Dell precision 390?
4x4gb ddr2 400MHz ECC:

2x8gb ddr2 667MHz ECC:

2x4gb ddr2 800MHz Non-ECC:

I've purc hased  and installed 16GB RAM in the two available memory slots. Only 8GB is visible (upgraded from 4GB). The HP Envy Sleekbook Maintenance and Service Guide HP Envy TouchSmart c03599931.pdf says on page 2 that the system supports 16GB RAM. When I go into the BIOS setup, I cannot change the amount of memory, which shows only 8GB. How can I see all 16GB?

As the title suggests: Is a RAM upgrade possible for this partiular model? Lenovo Yoga 720-13IKBR 81C3007WMHOne (Dutch) site I regularly visit suggests it is, but there's no sources to back it up and for me the 16GB upgrade option is crucial. And why is it impossible to find any information on this laptop model? All info I find points to the 720-13IKB (without the "R"). My query concerns the "Kaby Lake refresh model with Core i5-8250U processor.

I have a TP T530, 2359-4LU, that has Win 10 installed.  Originally had 4gb of ram. After upgrading to 6gb of ram, system ran fine. Went to seep mode when closing the laptop lid as normal, but when opening the lid, the device would not wake/resume, instead with a black screen the device would shut down.  I have read something about possibly too much voltage needed by the new ram and some devices can alter those settings in the bios, but I can't find that for my system. Any suggestions? Doug
