Preferred Solution: Some questions about using the "ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock" with the X1 Extreme

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everyone, I recently bought a Thinkpad X1 Extreme and I am now locking for a suitable Thunderbolt 3 dock. Although I've read a lot of posts about various docks I am still a little consfused about which one to choose. It seems like the following ones would all work with the X1 Extreme:1. Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W:https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...2. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (170W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...3. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (230W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/top-tech/Thunderbolt-WS-230W-dock-US/p/40AN023... Please correct me if I am wrong but to me it seems as if the only difference between these docks is that the workstation ones come with two AC adapters each and a special Thunderbolt/Power cable to avoid using two different cables. Or are there any other technical differences? So if I am okay with a two cable solution couldn't I just use the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W and connect it via Thunderbolt while at the same time use my 135W AC adapter to charge the laptop? Thanks a lot in advance.

Dear community, I am running a Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock with my P72 and I am having a hard time to get some of my realtime USB devices to run properly: (1) 1080p Webcams: I tested 2 devices (Logitech C930e and Microsoft LifeCam Studio) and both provide an unstable video stream, which is regularly interrupted by distortions. A lower 720p stream with another device (Logitech C270) works fine, though. (2) Oculus Rift Headset and Oculus Sensor: Does not run at all or with bad tracking performance. Those devices require a stable USB 3.0 connection to function properly. All of those devices run perfectly when connected to my Thinkpad P72 diretly. So chances are, that the Dock is causing the problems, I have the Dock's latest drivers (v10011) and firmware (04-0E-83_Rev_0083) installed. Does the Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock actually support fast USB connections (such as high definition Webcams)? Or is it rather likely that my Dock and/or the Thunderbolt cable are damaged?  I have been working on this issue for many hours now. So any advice is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Robert

I received the ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock back in October. In fact, I got two: one for the home office and one for the work office. It came in a small but heavy package (yes, it has two power adapters inside: a 65W and a 230W one). As mobile workstations have a power requirement that is more than 100W - P1/X1X requires 135W, the P52 170W and the P72 230W - a single TB3 cable cannot carry power to the notebook. Hence the special double cable that comes with the dock. I know I read a lot of arguments on which is better - the mechanical dock or the cable dock.    I have been using both docks daily since I got them, and I gathered my thoughts into two articles.   The review has my opinion about the dock and how it functions. You will also find more pictures about the dock and cable in this article. The troubleshooting article has some issues I bumped into and some solutions for them. One issue in particular mechanical dock fans will love :-) The cable can dislodge easily, and while the dock functions because there is a Thunderbolt 3 connection, the power connection gets terminated and the notebook will use battery power. Read more about in my troubleshooting article.

Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation DockEU/INA/VIE/ROKModel name: 40AN0230EULink (US version) I didn't find any decent pictures and or specs about this dock for the P series workstations, so here you are some pictures. It has a special combined cable, that allows to attach the powercable and the Thunderbolt cable in one. On the P1, P52, and P72, the sockets for the power adapter and the Thunderbolt are arranged the same way that the cable can plug in exactly. This is a simple and clever solution I think. The dock arrives with:230 W power adapter (which is for the P72 necessary, the P52 and P1 can use smaller ones), and I think is a simple pass-through from the dock to the laptop.65W power adapter - which is for powering the dock itself Downsides:The dock's cable is only 60 cm long, so there is not enough length to hide the dock (I think this is related to display data on Thunderbolt - can someone confirm?)And that the cable can be plugged in in one direction, so it will determine how the laptop and dock can be positioned relative to each otherConnections:USB: 5Thunderbolt: 2Audio: 1Network: 1Lock: 1List price is 392? in Belgium.

HelloI've seen postings on Solidworks forum that there can be a conflikt between the Intel® HD Graphics 630 and the Quadro P2000 when running on extern monitor: https://forum.solidworks.com/thread/233873 "I have a Lenovo ThinkPad P1 with an Intel Xeon E-2176M and an NVIDIA Quadro P2000. The integrated graphics for the Xeon processor are Intel UHD P630, which does not appear to have official support from Solidworks. When connected to a second monitor, Solidworks crashes anytime I try to open or start a part because the second monitor uses the integrated graphics. The only work-around I have is to disable the Intel graphics drivers, but this is annoying and I feel like I shouldn't have to do this. The NVIDIA control panel setting is already telling Solidworks to use the P2000 card, but this doesn't seem to matter. All my drivers are up to date with what has been validated by Lenovo. Solidworks just doesn't like UHD P630. Does anyone know if support for UHD P630 is in the works?" Is it likely to be a problem on a Thinkpad P1 gen2 with an Quadro T2000 and Intel® HD Graphics 630 when running Solidworks on ekstern monitor on Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock - EU/INA/VIE/ROK? I ask becuse this will be a dealbraker for me if I buy the Thinkpad P1, as I normally always use external monitor at home when docked!

When turning on the Thunderbolt 3 workstation dock using a P52 the USB and audio ports do not work. Why are keyboard/mouse/headphones not instantly working when switching on the dock? Is there a special setting necessary? Thx!

I have an X1 Extreme plugged into a Thunderbolt 3 Dock (40AN0230US).  Whenever the screen locks it cuts off audio.  I like this. Prevents sound coming from a computer that is locked.  However, when I unlock the computer, the only way to get the sound back it to restart the whole system.  This I don't like.I have 2 monitors (ThinkVision P27H's) plugged  in using Display Port and the audio is playing from one of the monitors.  The monitors are listed in the audio panel, but neither will provide any sound on unlock.  If I change the volume it lags terribly and eventually freezes.  I can switch to internal audio.I have:1) Reinstalled audio and display drivers on the computer.2) Reinstalled thunderbolt drivers on the computer3) Updated the dock's firmwareBut the problem persists.  Any ideas of what to try next besides getting a replacement?  Every item - even the cables - in the chain are supplied by Lenovo.  Should work flawlessly in my estimation.

I used the Lenovo System Update (v5.07.0074) and was prompted to download and install (was listed as Critical Update) the Firmware to my Dock.  As always, I closed all applications and sat as the Firmware downloaded. I got the expected prompt to ensure I was plugged in. I then watched as the upgraded prompted me to install. Installation completed and everything appeared to be fine.  I powered down the thinkpad and disconnected. Worked from the living room, then went back to the dock. Connected, and noticed that before I connected the White light on the power button was illuminated. Shrugged, and pushed the power button. Nothing. I un-plugged the Dock, got a cup of coffee, returned and plugged it back in. Nothing. I then noticed that none of the pass-through power was working on the dock.  So, I unplugged it again.  Unplugged everything connected to it, and held the power button down for 15 seconds in an effort. All of this at the recommendation of Lenovo Support. Who, by the way, was very nice and well spoken. Nothing we did worked. I happened to have another Thunderbolt 3 cable in my bag, and no change. I powered up my new X1 Yoga, and connected the cable. No power. This wasn't passing power at all. I confirmed the Intel Thunderbolt app was running, and confirmed that Windows was not even detecting the Dock.  Lenovo is sending me a replacement. Has anyone seen any issues with the new Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 Workstation Dock 40ANY230US and using the USB ports? Specifically what happens is when a user undocks and goes to a meeting and comes back, redocks and then they see USB not recognized or malfunctioned errors. They then have to restart in order to get the USB functionality back. Then as soon as they undock and redock it happens again.  So far I have almost been able to track it down to having a Jabra headset dongle plugged into the dock when this happens.  Wondering if anyone has experienced this or has a fix? Thanks!

Hello All.  I am new here. My company replaced my W540 (Windows 7 OS) Thinkpad with a P52 (Windows 10 OS) Thinkpad.  I have an external DisplayPort monitor and extend the desktop to it.  I have a USB printer.  I use both wired Ethernet, and wifi.  I have a wireless Logitech mouse.  I also have a set of Altec speakers.  The P52 no longer uses the sit on type of Dock, so I bought a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (230W).  I set everything up, with the external monitor connected to the Thunderbolt 3, along with the Ethernet, printer, speakers, and Logitech Unifying transceiver.  With everything connected, the P52 connected to the monitor just fine, and I extended the Desktop to it.  The P52 could not see the printer, the Ethernet, or the Logitech Unifying transceiver.  If I move these items to direct connection on the P52, they are all found right away. Today, I downloaded the latest software and drivers for the Thunderbolt 3, and then installed them.  I have the same results for the four peripherals.  Am I missing something?  My Windows 10 OS is the Enterprise Edition, version 1803.  The Dock lets me connect the monitor and the power with one cable, but I still need to plug in and out the other four items if I use them. Help Please... Thanks,Bunsen1

Hello, I have a Lenovo X1E, 1st gen 20MF laptop hooked to my second Thunderbolt 3 workstation dock. I have already had to replace the Dock once because of connection issues. My current one was messing up as well until I flashed both the X1E thunderbolt controller and the dock as well, I also read on another forum about disabling some power setting in the BIOS but I cant remember what setting it was. However, now when I launch a full screen game, such as World of Warcraft, the dock will disconnect and reconnect randomly. I am about to toss this $400 dollar paperweight out the window! New X1 Extreme Gen 2 and new TB 3 Gen 2 Dock... and am having continual problems with various devices dropping out when connected to the dock.  One of three screens would not wake up after sleep, random wired ethernet connection drops out flipping me to wireless, random USB devices drop out, etc. This thread highlights a critical software and firmware update that would seem to correct the same type of issue I am seeing - except that there isn't a software and driver listed for the X1 Extreme in either Gen 1 or Gen 2!  I use this setup for my business and it is obviously imperative that it works.  I've had this for only a couple of weeks and updated to the latest TB3 Gen 2 driver (V10015) but it hasn't seemed to make a difference. Rebooting used to work but lately stuff drops out regularly and really handcuffs my ability to do much at all when connected to the dock.  Of note is that all of this only happens when connected to the dock.  Any and all help would be huge!

I have a P52 and a Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Dock Workstation Gen2 On the dock I have 2 Dell U2415 connected via a DisplayPort cable and a microsoft wired keyboard. When I lock the computer, the monitors turn off after a few seconds. Usually any key press or mouse move wakes up the monitors so I can login to Windows 10. The problem I have is that since the last firmware update 3.1.64, the screens don't always wake up when I press a key. A workaround to nudge the screens to wake up is to switch off one monitor, then switch it back on when the other screen wakes up. Another workaround is to press the dock button which puts the computer to sleep, then wake it up after a few seconds. Clearly both workarounds are not ideal and I would like this problem fixed. Note that I had the same problem when I bought the dock with the original dock firmware 3.1.53 and the problem was solved when I upgraded to version 3.1.61.  I have tried installing firmware 3.1.61 as I had the files around but the installer will not let me downgrade. Is there a way to force a downgrade to version 3.1.61 or is there another way to fix this problem? Thanks

I've been experiencing general stability issues with the ThunderBolt 3 dock. I purchased Extreme X1 for work because of the impressive specs and portability of the device. Overall I've been very pleased with the performance and build quality of the device and Lenovo's software suite makes keeping everything up to date really easy. WIth that said, I've had LOTS of issues with general stability of this product. It appears to Lenovo had issues with the discrete graphics (Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 ti) which may have mostly been resolved with the latest update. I'm on a fairly recent version of Windows 10 (1803). When using the Thunderbolt 3 dock I still experience lots of issues where the device freezes or becomes unresponsive when docking or undocking. Often times I must force power off the device completely because the device is unable to wake from sleep correctly when docked. I have not tested whether device itself is unable to wake from sleep or if it's just because it is connected from the Dock. However sometimes the device WILL wake correctly but then certain functions will not work, notable USB data will not work often but will be powered (keyboard lights are on but can't use caps lock, for example). Or sometimes the VIDEO won't display at all (thunder bolt graphics issue with discrete GPU) however I can clearly see caps lock works on my keyboard. Note all mentions of keyboard here refer to a USB keyboard wired to the TB dock.  Also worth noting ofte... Read more

I have acquired a Thunderbolt 3 dock with 100 Watts power delivery to connect to my X1 Extreme. I then ran a CPU benchmark to see how the notebook would handle the somewhat lower power supply compared to the standard 135 Watts power brick. To my disappointment I noticed that the CPU frequency stayed very far below specifications during the benchmark. Now I'm wondering why this is the case, since 100 Watts should have been enough to power a simple CPU benchmark without throttling, since GPU load was minimal. How exactly does the notebook behave if it is provided with less than the recommended power? Is it specified somewhere?

I've tested with attaching USB flash drives, headphones, Ethernet, HDMI, and DP, but nothing is recognized nor are any warnings/errors displayed in Windows. While the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is listed as being compatible with the P51s and T570, the notebook order page does not list the Thunderbolt 3 Dock in any of the accessories lists. Lenovo Sales also confirmed that the Thunderbolt 3 Dock is fully compatible with the P51s.  However, I needed to purchase the Thunderbolt 3 Dock separately from the notebook order. What's going on? Has anybody successfully used the P51s or the T570 with the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Or is this something I need to wait for full support via a future BIOS/driver update? Or perhaps my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is defective? Thanks,Boris

Hello I seem to have a problem on my P53 laptop, as the external displays, connected on the two HDMI ports on the Lenovo TP Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock(Product nr.: 40AN0230EU), they just randomly turn on on the first try. If they not turn on, on the first try, I have to put it back to sleep and then awake again at once. I always use the power button on the dock.So where can I see what firmware version I have for my Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock. I se that I have controller driver version 1.41.648.4.I've also search on Lonovo's site to find a download, but can only find this site: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/accessory/docks/thunderbolt-3-workstation-dock/40an/down... but I can not see the workstation dock listed, just the Thunderbolt 3 dock, but maybe that cover's both? The version listed is: V1.0.0.20 of 07 Aug 2019. I'm also very confused about what dock I really have, is it the:  ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock, ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 or the ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock Gen 2 , or are they all the same as they seem to use the same driver if you look at this site:  https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/DS505148  , here the latest driver version are : V10015 of 23 Sep 2019. It's also odd that the Sep version(10015) has a lover number that the Aug version(10020)?  I'm also very confused as if the terms firmware and driver's are used correctly, and are there really 3 different... After the latest (almost mandatory according to alert) BIOS update of my P53 I cannot undock and redock without rebooting. The dock is recognized but the USB ports do not work after redock - the display does. It is the same on two different docks with newest and second newest dock firmware. First Lenvo support would not help at all - said it was a software problem - and now they after me complaining want to take the machine in for repair. I doubt it is a hardware problem but just a side effect after updating the BIOS. Anybody else with same problem and a solution? No way to get "real" qualified help from Lenovo on such an issue. It takes forever to reinstall and setup all software and tools on a workstation and just re-formatting and re-installing Windows (advice from support) with is not way to solve a problem induced by Lenovo in my mind. It is an expensive computer and expensive docking stations - but apparently no real support.

See subject.  Ever since the BIOS upgrade, the dock no longer crashes.  Two days running now with no problems; prior to the upgrade it would crash routinely when connecting via USB-C.  I had to employ the unsavoury workaround of connecting the laptop to a charger and connecting it to the dock via the USB-A port using the USB-A to USB-C adaptor supplied.  Now I'm connecting via USB-C cable only. In fact, I'd given up on using the dock at all and had it just sitting there.  I decided to give it another go after reading that BIOS v1.19 fixed instances of BSODs occuring when connected to an external monitor (which I did experience now and again when connecting to an external monitor via HDMI i.e. not via dock).    Dock Type : 40AFX1E Type : 20MF

Hi guys, This morning System Update ran and installed a bunch of the newest March 2019 updates. The big one was the Intel Management Engine. After rebooting, when my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is plugged into my Lenovo P52 it freezes on the POST screen with the Lenovo logo. If i unplug the dock it boots fine, plug the dock in after the OS is booted, things work fine. Its just during the POST during secure boot. I tried reflashing the Thunderbolt firmware to the 11/2018 to no avail, reflashed the dock with version 3.x of the firmware (latest) no difference, downgraded the firmware on the dock, changed the boot support methods for thunderbolt, so on and so forth.  Its strange it doesn't get past the logo screen it just sits. Is there another version of the Thunderbolt firmware i should be using besides the November 2018? I really would not like to peel back all the different updates that it updatedAnybody got any ideas? Is there a way to find what the cause is? Honestly i can unplug the dock when i reboot and plug it back in within a second after the POST screen and things work as normal. Its just a pain.

I recently purchased a X1 Extreme and was hoping for plug and play eGPU via thunderbolt 3. However, the Akitio Node (+ 1080 ti) does not even power on when I connect the thunderbolt 3 cable to the port. Both the Lenovo Vantage  + Windows Update states my firmware + drivers are up to date.

Is it possible to charge the batteries of a ThinkPad P53 and P72 with a ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock with USB-C?

A:Charge ThinkPad P53 and P72 with ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock with USB-C

No, it is not possible to charge either system through the USB-C port. You must use the supplied PSU for the laptop via the slim power port.

Using a thinkpad P70 with the new workstation dock. If I put the P70 on the dock with the lid closed and press the power button on the dock the laptop powers up but nothing appears on the two display port monitors that are connected to the dock. If I put the P70 on the dock, open the lid and press the power button on the laptop then the laptop boots ok.  I can then close the lid and continue work off the two connected monitors. I want to know how I can avoid having to open and close the laptop lid since it kind of destroys the point of having a docking station. Had a W510 beforehand and it did not display this problem.

A:ThinkPad P70 with the new workstation dock - will ...

Solved this.  Went into BIOS settings; display and changed boot device to monitors connected to dock.  When the laptop is powered on with the lid closed it now displays windows login screen on the primary monitor.

I have a Thinkpad X1 Extreme (20MF000CUS) connected to two external 4K monitors via Lenovo Thunderbolt Workstation Dock (40AN0230US). Windows 10 desktop extends to all 3 displays.Everything works really well except for a major annoyance: normally I have a bunch of apps/windows I leave open on all 3 monitors. Whenever I put the laptop to sleep and I then resume it later on, all app/windows I left open are automatically resized, moved and stacked up on the primary (laptop) display. Is this by design? Anyway to prevent this behaviour?I noticed that the laptop display is handled by the Intel graphic card while the two external displays are handled by the nVidia graphic card. Could this be the reason?

Hi:   I have a new Thinkpad X1 Gen 7 for 2 months now and am quite happy with it.  However, I have a problem, I can't seem to figure out:  When the laptop is connected to Lenovo Thunderbolt dock, it cannot boot; It just gets stuck at the Bios Lenovo logo.  But if I remove the thunderbold cable from the dock, reboot and reconnect the cable after Windows is booted, every device connected to the dock work fine.  I have update all the drivers and firmware to the latest versions.   I have Premium support and the technician think the motherboard is defective and suggested that I change the motherboard.  Somehow, I doubt that this is a problem.  Does anyone have the same problem and/or a solution?   Thank you in advance,
