I need help upgrading my comp please

Q: I need help upgrading my comp please

A year ago I did lots of research and then proceeded to purchase pieces and parts to build my first computer. Now, since the market has changed again, I am clueless on what to spend the least amount of money on to make my computer perform even smoother. I do spend most of time gaming so please keep that in mind when giving suggestions. Everything was basically a plug and play build, I didnt mess much with bios and currently run on a XP platform. What can I do to speed things up, ie, video cards, Should I buy a 2nd video card to run with my current? Add more ram/memory? Im unsure how to overcloak or know if its an option with me current setup as well, if you suggest that, elaborate or tell me where to look for help.
My current build:
~Video card - EVGA 512-P2-N747-LR GeForce 8500 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card

~Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe 2.13GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80557E6420

~Mobo - EVGA 122-CK-NF63-TR LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard

~Memory - G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ

~HDrive - Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3160815AS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

I got raidmax tower with plenty of fans and pretty lights ( :haha: ) with 500w power supply. If your upgrades suggestions warrant a bigger supply please let me know. I would hate to fry my new goods. Thanks sooo much for the help, signed noob.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

State a budget, your location and your current monitor's maximum resolution. That'd help us make specific suggestions for you. Also, if possible, can you post the exact model number of the PSU inside your case or the model of the case itself if you can't find any on the PSU?

im overhauling my comp and was wondering if these items would work together. wanted to get a new large HD and brand spankin new vid card. decided on a 500gb Seagate Barracuda HD and PNY GE Force 8800GTS. Now, with these new toys knew I would need a new PSU as well. Will these items all be able to work together or am I wasting my time/money?

I currently have an ATX 300 watt PSU, so needed the new PSU for my new toys.

Personally seems fine, but an SATA hdd is much faster. You also better get an additional case fan or a pci fan that cools the gpu because the 8800 series runs extremely hot.

Microsoft Windows XP

Version 2002
Service Pack 1

AMD Anthlon(tm) 2800+
2.08 GHz
256 MB of Ram

i think i should start with the mother board anyone got any ideas please it would be helpful

A:upgrading my comp

A motherboard is a motherboard... there's usually no reason to invest in a new board unless you are planning to buy a processor that uses a different socket or is not supported by the board... or if you're looking for a video card that needs to connect via bus that isn't on your current model. My recommendations are:

-Buy more RAM.
-Download Service Pack 2.
-Is that an Athlon XP processor? If so, you could probably get a 3000+ without compatibility issues. (I would check on that first though.) TigerDirect is doing a $40 rebate deal where you can get one for about 30 bucks. I guess Socket A is being phased out.

Well at least the big issue I have here is that my friend bought a new comp for $200. Really friggin ticked off because it came with liquid cooling. but besides I also wonder what was the speed of athlon xp's when they first hit the scene the lowest I remember is 1.4 Ghz, but my friend says is 1.8Ghz. But clocks out at 1.18ghz. Checked his board for possibility of underclockage still some odd reason that doesn't seem to be the case.

his board is a KT4AV from MSI

he wants me to buy a cheap sempron for it but still I really don't think its a good idea to to put one in their especially when I'm not sure about the processor that s already in there.

Hello. i Upgraded from win xp 32bit to Win 7 ultimate 32bit.

i am upgrading my computers MoBo, Case, CPU, and CPU cooler.

with all the new hardware. will i have to reformat? and if so. how do i go about doing it? Will i have to reinstall windows xp, than upgrade to windows 7. or can i just put in the win 7 cd and do it from there since its an upgrade version and not full version?

i currently have these specs

Xcilo case
Intel core 2 Quad
EVGA Nvidia MoBo

New specs i am upgrading too

Corsair obsiddian 800d case
Intel Core i7-930 Bloomfield 2.8GHz
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R

so question is. do i need to reformat? if so, how do i go about it? xp to win 7 upgrade, or delete partition and just install win 7. and can i do 64 bit if i do complete reinstall?

thanks for help!

A:How to go about upgrading comp. do i need to reformat?

I would recommend doing a clean (with format) install. No need to install XP first.

Hello! i know i have putted out very simillar things like this one but i havet got a CLEAR answer.

So now. what i ask for is, will a computer with Wndows vista 32 (will soon upgrade to windows 7 64) with 4Gb DDR 2 memory with 400-800mhz (dont really know) and Amd phenom 8750 (i think) 3 core 2.4 Ghz
and 300W psu (19 Ampere 12V Rail) with Nvidia Geforce gt 430 (Asus vs. ENGT430)

Get A LOT better with a Radeon 7750 instead of the ENGT430. is it worth upgrading and will i get a big boost? mostly play very heavely modded minecraft! but also a lot of other intense games.

Will this gpu also increase the sound from the computer?

Also if you have other suggestions about a better gpu for my 300W psu than the radeon 7750 p,ease let me know

Keep your answers clear and about this!

A:Will upgrading the gpu make a lot of difference in a old comp?

You probably won't see too much difference in fps with that video card if you're struggling with fps on minecraft play without mods or if you want all the mods on you will have to upgrade your cpu ram and motherboard to avoid bottlenecking also what do you mean by "will the gpu increase the sound of my computer" ?

I have an oldish comp - about...8 years old, but since I have had it I have done various upgrades over the years, so currently its running:

333mhz celeron
256+64MB RAM

I have got it running Win98SE, but now have some spare copies of WinXP Home and Pro. I have checked the minimum sys requirements of WinXP, and it fits the minimum, BUT: is it worth it? Would installing WinXP just slow it down more?

The main motovation to upgrade is that I have found that a number of anti-virus programs wont run properly since version udates (example, AVG 6 to 7), and so I thought if I use a spare copy of WInXP, I could make it more secure by being able to run the programs properly (kind of an oximoron, installing WinXP for security...)

Anyhow, is it worth doing? or will it just be really slow? If so, is there anyway i can delete what is undeeded, or do tweaking to make it run effectively?

Yeah I like Vegas 6 and Adobe Premier 1.5, Vegas 6 actually doesn't lag as much with my current specs but I enjoy using Adobe Premier much more. I'm going to upgrade my comp to handle editing more effectively and i just need some questions answered.

Specs Now:

3.2 P4 HT
200 gig WD with 2mb cache
512 ram
geforce fx5200
windows xp pro sp2

What i want to do is upgrade to my ram to a gig and add an extra harddrive with 8mb cache. Apparently you need the video and the program on seperate harddrives so my main question is if i get a 8mb hd and only store video but my program running on a hd wth 2mb cache will my program preformance improve or do i need to upgrade both harddrives to 8mb cache. and another question if i do upgrade both will it be even more increased.

3. IE Spyad w/ Zoned Out
4. PC pitstop driver alert

6. ATF Cleaner
7. PC Pitstop Driver Alert

Will these slow down my system, or make it take longer to shut down and restart my comp? Is there anything on this list that I should not have? If it's not a big deal, does anyone recommend any more apps I should download or things to do to make my system better?

If I install almost all of the reputable spyware removers and system optimizers, etc. on my comp, will it slow down my system? Will there be any negative consequences?

Right now I would opt for a faster computer over a secure one, so I would prefer speed over an increased possibility of a virus, etc (still want an anti-virus though). I'd like my comp to shut down and restart quickly, but of course it's not that big of a deal.

A:Newbie questions. Will anti-spyware, etc. slow down comp? Best way to optimize comp?

As a rule, you use:
1 firewall
1 antivirus
* Norton is not the best program around, and it's a resource hog, but since you bought it, you'll have to live with it until it expires.
* Using more then one of each is asking for problems (conflict).
As for antispyware programs, you can have as many, as you want, however, I wouldn't use more then 2 as startups, since you want fast computer.
Your computer specs look very good, but the lower number of startups, the better (this is another thing to check).
As for antispyware, I'd keep Spyware Blaster as a startup program, and I'd add a-squared: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
You may want to run others, you have once in a while, or when any problem arises.

In addition, you want to keep your computer clean of garbage, and for that purpose, you want to get CCleaner: www.ccleaner.com

Once a month, you want to run defrag. I recommend free jkDefrag: http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/ instead of Windows defrag.

That's about it. If you have more questions, please, ask.

I've got an annoying problem I'm trying to smooth out. On my 3-computer LAN, I've got network shares set up on all three comps. (Not homegroup; not public folders; those aren't workable for my situation.)

On my main work computer ("Comp A") (Win 7 Home Premium), whenever I open the sharelist on either "B" or "C", I have the extreme pleasure of waiting 8-10 seconds before the shares on the requested machine are presented.

Other than that, the shares work perfectly, except for the annoying delay every time I want to use Comp A to open the list of shares on Comp B or Comp C.

What I'm sharing: My user directory on each comp. (I'm the only user on this 3-node LAN.) Sharing with Homegroup or Public Folders isn't feasible.

When the delay happens: Courtesy of Wireshark, I've learned that when the delay occurs, it occurs after "Negotiate Protocol Response" and before "Session Setup Request".

I'm also getting the same delay behavior on one other computer (Comp C), but only when accessing the share list Comp A. Here's the specific run-down...

Computer A
Windows 7 Home Premium
8-second delay opening shares on Comp B and Comp C.
Computer B
Windows 7 Ultimate
No delay opening shares on Comp A or Comp C
Computer C
Windows 7 Ultimate
8-second delay opening shares on Comp A (Home Prem.) but *not* Comp B (Ult.)
I'd really appreciate any troubleshooting suggestions. End result: When I click a computer to ... Read more

I recently set up a workgroup called "workgroup" so that my two PC's could share files.

The XP comp is called Qing, and can access the workgroup and log onto the linux server called Han (running Fedora 6 with Samba) . Once logged onto Han from Qing, I can see the shared folder, but when i try to access it I get the following message:

"\\Han\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found."

On Han, the linux comp, I have set up a shared folder called "share" with full permissions.
I have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP and rebooted and still no luck,
I have searched the internet and these forums for a similar problem but was unable to find anything that I could use.

I want to be able to print from my XP Computer to the Vista computer in the other room, wirelessly.

XP Home
Vista Home Premium
New, Shared Printer

Printer on the Vista computer is "shared"...I don't know anything about networks
I use control panel: "add a printer" -> "A network printer" -> "Browse for printers" -> it shows some sort of window with icons that don't really mean much to me:

One category is called "Workgroup" and when I click it, the Vista name of the computer in the other room shows up, but nothing happens when I double click that. I connected to a wireless printer a long time ago this way when one was connected to an XP computer, and the actual name of the printer would show up.

Does anyone know how to do it?

Two days ago I encountered a virus on the comp while installing some pirated (eeek) software. Needless to say I got my due! The comp rebooted... or I rebooted -I am still hazy on it- and I could not find my taskbar and it looked like half of my desktop icons had been moved down the screen. I tried to move them but nothing worked and I also tried to recover the taskbar using ctrl-esc. Anyway I found your website and someone suggested using DR Web and AVG spyware as well as Smitfraudfix I did all of this and still nothing has changed. There was also a suggestion to use hijakthis so this is the point I am at now. Any further help would be appreciated.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 11:37:30 AM, on 8/7/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Boot mode: Safe modeRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exeO2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Re... I just got my new laptop and I am trying to transfer files from old computer to it. I tried to set up a home network by following the wizard. When I go to My Network Places from my new computer, nothing shows. I tried pressing the View Workgroup computers button from there and all I got was:

"Home not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."

What should I do?

A:Network Problem. New comp can't access old comp.

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

If that doesn't do it, let's follow these basic debug steps.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. A failure here needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs: Workstation, DHCP Client, DNS Client, Server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, Computer Browser.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

My dad has expensive construction software that he needs on a day to day basis, but his laptop is dying and very slow. Currently his laptop runs Vista x86, and I wanted to give him my laptop that runs 7 x64. Could I swap the hard drives so that its an easy transition, or would that not work? Thanks for any input and suggestions.

A:Hard drive from one comp work in another comp like it did before?

"his laptop is dying and very slow"

that might mean his hard drive is bad, or that he has too many programs/malware installed, in which case you would not want to put his drive in your laptop.

But to answer your question, it depends on how different the chipset drivers are between the two machines. But if you have the win7 x64 install dvd, you should be able to do a repair install if windows is not able to boot after switching hard drives.

I have a 32bit comp, W7 Ult, 1TB HD and I would like to clone that onto a comp that is a 64bit. HD is the same capacity, question is, can this process be done? Will the programs from the 32bit work in the 64bit comp.? I'm thinking of using Acronis True Image Home 2011.I was given a newer desktop minus the HD and was going to retire my old desktop and I wanted what was on the old comp(32bit) transfered to the new (64bit) tower. Thanx in advance for any advice.

A:Transferring Everything From 32bit comp To 64bit comp

You can't do it.
64-bit has to be a clean installation.
You can transfer your data, but all programs have to be reinstalled.

I just bought a belkin easy transfer wire thinking it'll let me transfer files from one computer to another... it seems it just transfer whole accounts without asking me what I want to transfer over.

I was looking for a better option than transferring to USB then transferring to other computer. Is there a way to do this?

A:transfer data from comp to comp

to just transfer 'files and folders'--use a crossover cable (under $10)--see think link with instructions:

Alright, I'm clueless to Networking pretty much.

I have recently set up a linksys wrt54g router to my desktop with a wireless signal to my laptop.

My question is, is there a way/how do I share files between the two computers. What do I do to set this up (if it's possible), and what other equipment might I need.

I'm pretty much networking illertiate so go easy on me.

Hello there, I recently upgraded my comp by replacing mobo, graphics, ram, cpu
pretty much the lot except for my hdd and cd drive.
the problem is now it wont boot and keeps restarting, it gets to the windows logo and then goes to a blue screen for half a sec then restarts. i have windows 7 and even the repair tool doesnt help with the problem.
ether my hdd has had it (i have had it for a while now) or there is a issue with my new ram?
could this be a compatability issue or a fault?

i have tried the windows 7 repair tool but comes up saying cant fix problems. tried restarting from a earlier time, and iv also tried to boot from the windows 7 disk but it just freezes so i can boot or install.

can anyone help me try and get this new beast of a comp up and running ???

A:Upgraded comp but now comp keeps restarting

First you need to turn off automatic restart. Go to Control Panel, System, Advanced System settings, Start Up and Recovery, settings and un-check automatically restart

I am currently wanting to begin the process of upgrading various parts of my computer in the upcoming months. The first item I would like to do upgrade is the RAM. I am currently using 8BG (4x2) and would like to double that. I was thinking of going with the Corsair Vengeance 2x8. Eventually I would like to have a pretty sick gaming computer. As of right now, it can handle a lot but can struggle from time to time if I crank up the graphic settings.

I guess the reason I am posting this is to ask a few questions. Would upgrading RAM be a good starting point if wanting to upgrade other hardware as well. I was thinking of also swapping out the video card, cpu, and adding some fans (when I get money that is). I must sound like a complete novice right now lol.. but, I am ready to finally go through with this because my computer is starting to feel like it is getting behind the times in terms of speed and performance haha. Anyway, any insight into this topic and or first time upgrading, specifically with the RAM, would be grrreat. Thanks.

I've managed to upgrade some of my home PC's from Win 7 or Win 8 to Wn 10 without any significant problems, but I am having major difficulty upgrading one of my PC's.

It is running Win 7 Home 32-bit and when I originally ran the Windows 10 upgrade advisor, it indicated that I could not upgrade as my NVidia GEForce 6600 graphics card was incompatible with Windows 10.

I tried various workarounds, using suggestions on this and other sites, to upgrade with the GEForce card but none were successful. So I purchased and installed a new graphics card - an AMD Radeon R7 240, which should be Win 10 compatible.

I then re-ran the Win 10 upgrade advisor - it still said that I couldn't upgrade as the "GeForce 6600 card" was incompatible - even though it was no longer installed!

I checked the Device Manager and the graphics card was clearly showing as being the AMD card. I then explicitly uninstalled any NVidia drivers/software using the Control Panel/Program uninstall - still unable to upgrade to Win 10. I also ran the Wagnard tools "Display driver uninstaller" and removed any NVidia software/drivers - still unable to upgrade. I am using the latest drivers from the AMD website.

I also tried to upgrade using the Media Creation tool and a Win 7 image from DVD (previously this also failed to work and gave the incompatible graphics card error); this seemed to work up to a point, but after a reboot it wanted me to select a keyboard layout but neither my usb keyboard no... Recently had a virus on my computer. Had to take it to the geek squad to get it fixed. Brought it home the other day and it would not connect to my wireless network (I am on the other laptop in my house that does still connect). It would connect before I got it "fixed". I brought it back to the store the next day and they tried a few things. I will connect to their wireless in the store.

I originally had Geek Squad come out earlier this year to set up my wireless router and the guy who helped me at the store said it might be because of a certain way he set my computer up to connect to the router which got erased when my computer had to be restored.

Now they want to charge me an extra $89 for them to come back out to the house and fix it.

Is there anything I can do to try to fix this myself without forking over even more money?

A:Comp just restored, network will not assign network address to comp

uh, maybe you would want to check what is the setting looks like now and post it here? maybe someone can help you out. also if possible, mention what brand?

I bought Windows 7 having come from Vista. However, there is a BIOS update for my system. The new BIOS update states: The BIOS updates the fan control algorithm of the system, and turns the fan on at low volume while your notebook PC is operational. If you are currently experiencing any symptoms on your notebook PC, please contact HP for support. It is located here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...340180&lang=en

I'd love to flash it but not sure if it will ruin my computer as it's more than likely not designed for flash when Windows 7 is on it or do you's know any better?

I also have 2 blue vertical lines going do the right hand side of the screen. I've seen loads of problems but no solutions. Has any fixed this HP problem?

Cheers folks!

A:Upgrading BIOS after Upgrading from Vista to 7

The BIOS is the stuff that happens BEFORE Windows starts to load.
Do you have issues with overheating or with the fan? If so, the BIOS update is for you.
Also, BIOS flashes are dangerous - and you can turn your computer into a paperweight by doing it incorrectly. In short, if it ain't broke - don't fix it!

The type of lines that you describe on your screen are usually caused by hardware issues. Send it in for repair if the system is under warranty. If not, then get an estimate from a local computer store - it may be cheaper to live with it.

I just got a new computer with Windows 7.

My old computer has Windows XP on it.

I need to get all my old saved Incredimail mail from my old computer to my new one.

I just dont know how.

Here is what I have done so far...

Installed Incredimail on my new computer with Win 7.

I then looked online to find out where the back up files for Incredimail emails are and found them on my Win XP comp. I then downloaded that file to a flash drive thinking I could find the same file on my computer with Win 7.

The pathways are supposed to be:

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\IM\Identities\
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\IM\Identities\

I was able to find the second one on my XP Computer. But when I went to transfer the file to my Win 7 Computer, I could not find the appropriate folder. There IS no Documenst and Settings. Nor is there a an IM or Identities folder.

What do I do?

I REALLY need to have these old messages. There is some very important info I need to have.

A:Incredimail From XP Comp to Win 7 Comp, help?

They have a tool in the program to do this: IncrediMail Help Center: How do I transfer all of my IncrediMail files and settings to another computer?

In Win 7, the folder is Users, not Documents and Settings. From there, it's probably Roaming, but I'm not positive. I don't and won't use Incredimail.

i originally had these specs:
1.6 Ghz AMD Athalon XP
dont remember stuff about the motherboard, it was nice i guess.
512 MB Ram
100 GB FAT32, for backupfiles
120 GB NTFS *edit*(glad i changed that, god i sound ignorant)** for main proccessing
128 MB ATI All-in-wonder
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro

and it was running kinda slow for some of the rendering i was doing and it happened to be near my bday/highschool graduation/eagle scout days so i got some new parts. i kept a stick of ram and the harddrives and sound card and stuff and got these new parts:
2.9 Ghz Intel Celeron
New motherboard sorry, dont know much about that one either
*edit* http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1227617&CatId=0
thats the mobo and cpu i got
another 512 stick of ram totalling 1gb
256MB GeForce somthing or other
and a wintvgo capture card
with a new PS and Case

i set up windows the same way, put it to performance mode (all boxes unchecked but show contents of window while dragging) i have no spyware running, no viruses (acording to adaware and norton) but its just running slow. it takes about a minute and a half from the end of the bios booting, to the start of user intervention in windows (putting in password to log on) then it takes about 2 min for the harddrive to stop spinning and for me to actually use my computer. This seems very odd considering the (blank)hundred dollars i spent on this stuff.
