Asking for BitLocker Recovery Key on login

Q: Asking for BitLocker Recovery Key on login

So I was playing with BIOS settings for reformatting my laptop and reinstalling Windows using bootable USB drive. I didn't succeed and I probably did something stupid. Now I'm not able to login into my laptop. It's asking me for bitlocker recovery key on both disabled and enabled settings of secure boot.

On "Enabled" setting, it says "Bitlocker needs your recovery key to unlock your drive because Secure Boot policy has unexpectedly changed."

On "Disabled" setting, it says "Bitlocker needs your recovery key to unlock your drive because Secure Boot has been disabled. Either Secure Boot must be re-enabled, or Bitlocker must be suspended for Windows to start normally."

I don't have a recovery key. I don't remember setting one. I even searched for it in my Microsoft account. My device (ASUS X205TA) is listed but the recovery key is not.

Note that I don't have any useful data in the laptop, so I'd be fine with reinstalling windows even if I loose all the data. I just want to be able to use my laptop again.

Preferred Solution: Asking for BitLocker Recovery Key on login

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi
After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
update:
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

A:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

Hi,

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?

Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.

I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

Hello and good afternoon, I have a issue where a manager started the Bitlocker process on the SD card in his Surface Pro 3

with Windows 8.1. The Bitlocker attempt failed at 3.4% completed but the SD card ended up being Bitlocked without providing the Bitlocker Recovery Key (I've never seen this happen before). He doesn't know the password for the SD card and of course
I've been tasked to somehow release the encryption so that he can get the required information off of the SD card.

Is there anything that can be done to release the encryption on the SD card or has the SD card been made non-accessible moving forward?

I know a BIOS update on my Latitude with Windows 8 and Bitlocker activated on the O/S drive triggers Bit locker recovery on startup. I don't have the recovery key and so am stuck. How to recover without the Bit Locker recovery key?

A:BIOS update without suspending Bitlocker has triggered a recovery and on start up I am prompted for the recovery key

The solution I found was to install the previous version of the BIOS, but without being able to boot into Windows, I needed to install the previous version of the BIOS in DOS. Some server products provide a F12 boot up menu option to roll back a BIOS update, but this is not available in my Latitude.

I downloaded the correct BIOS version (the additional info section made specific reference to it being installable from Windows or DOS). I prepared a bootable USB key (to a dos prompt) and copied the bios installer executable to the memory stick.

Because secure boot (UEFI) is enabled, it is not possible to boot up from USB key, so legacy boot mode needs to be enabled. There were 3 settings that required changing in the BIOS before I was able to boot from the USB key.

Once I was able to boot into DOS from the USB key and got to the DOS prompt, I ran the BIOS update exe. The laptop rebooted, installed the previous BIOS version and then rebooted again. I pressed F2 to get into the BIOS and changed back the settings as they were (secure boot UEFI). I then managed to boot into windows without being prompted for the Bit locker recovery key.

You able to export or view the Bitlocker recovery key by going to Control Panel -> Security -> Bit locker Management, and temporarily suspend protection (until the next reboot). It is possible to run a commandlet to specify the number of reboots bit locker should be suspended for.

You may find that installing the previous version of the ... Read more

I made a big mistake! I installed W7 on my SSD partition 1. I have my users & data filed on HDD data partition X:\. I locked the X:\ I apparently do not have TPM. I get to the login screen & of course it fails to log in any user because the drive containing the data to continue is locked. In safe mode, repair startup I cannot unlock the drive as the abilty to type letters is not yet available. So, when I enter the key..... it only has numbers. In safe mode with command prompt I can unlock the drive with the password but I have no idea what to do from there in the cmd prompt & when I restart of course the drive is locked again. What can I do? Also it says it can't access the file when I attempt to unlock using control panel in safe mode. the password is accepted but can't access a file. doesn't list the file. I have the key file. I can access it as I am dual booting with ubuntu. I can also access it in safe mode. But, i have no idea what to do with it. Can I just put that file onto a usb by simply copying it over & then have it plugged in at boot? Please help asap! This is my school PC, first week, & of course we have twice the work. I should never have turned on BL without reading the whole file but i did & now what?

Folks,

Many hours of googling have not yet yielded a solution...

I have a .bat file that requests input of the PIN to unlock a bitlocker encrypted partition.
I would like to run this before windows LOGON (ask for password during boot).
This is because I placed several of the user directories (desktop etc) onto that partition.
If I do not unlock the drive before login, desktop does not load, and other startup programs (e.g., dropbox, skydrive) cannot access their folders and fail.

I have tried scheduling a task at start up, without success.
The bat file needs to be run as administrator - but even when I indicate "run with highest privilege" it won't run properly.

I have basic knowledge or task scheduler, cmd line, and registry editing (BASIC knowledge...).
So any help you can provide (with details) would be much appreciated!

I'm having a problem that the Bitlocker password screen which appears when I switch on has been replaced by a pattern of vertical orange/ brown stripes.

The main laptop I use day-to-day has been running Windows 8/8.1 Pro since not long after Win8 was released- I bought one of the original Win 8 Pro licences when they were on offer at ?25.

I've been using Bitlocker encryption on the main partitions C: and D:. It's an old laptop (originally came with XP) and has no TPM, so I used this tutorial to enable Bitlocker without TPM. This means I type a Bitlocker password in when the computer boots, before logging in as a user and typing in another password there.

It was running happily with Win 8.1, but conscious that the Win10 upgrade offer ends soon, last weekend I finally cleared enough disk space and upgraded to Windows 10.

I did the GWX upgrade as I have a lot of apps and software that would be a pain to reconfigure on a clean install, and not enough time to do that. I figured that as long as I've upgraded before the deadline, I can clean install later.

And it all went smoothly and worked happily for a few days ... right until a few days later when I switched on and the Bitlocker login screen was replaced by the pattern of vertical orange/ brown stripes. It seems I *can* type in the password 'blind' and once I've done that it boots as I'd expect. Not sure what triggered the change; I think it may have been because there were some updates that day, and the... Read more

Hi,

I have a new Windows 8.1 machine and I wish to encrypt the drive using Bitlocker. It gives me 4 options to save a recovery key
1. Save to your Microsoft account
2. Save to a USB flash drive
3. Save to a file
4. Print the recovery key

Option 1 isn't available as I'm logged on using a local account.
i. What is the difference between options 2 & 3? i.e. I could save to a file on a USB drive
ii. Does option 2 mean the USB flash drive cannot then be used for other purposes?
iii. Does option 2 also mean I could use a USB external hard drive, or does it have to be a flash drive?
iv. Once the recovery key has been created, can the key then be copied to other locations or is it only going to work where Bitlocker puts the key?
v. Just thinking about printing the recovery key - can this be used without a password to access the drive, how sensitive/important is the printed key?

N00b questions, I'd very much appreciate your answers.

Thanks

A:Bitlocker recovery key

hello and welcome to eight forms , my opinion , difference between 2 and 3 ,2 will create a file and put it on the flash drive for yah,3 you will have to move the file it creates to a flash drive of external drive manually 'I would think you could take the file it create and put it where ever you want , I don't use bitlocker ,if I did I would print it and put away for safe keeping ,like I try to do will all passwords .and if the drive is pass worded that you store the file on ,then yes someone would need the drive password to access the files on that drive, is not that what passwords are for ,I would assume that there are people who could hack your passwords like they do others ,good luck

A:Bitlocker recovery key

Hello @pcsl, Welcome back to the HP Support forum. Thank you for your post. BitLocker is a Microsoft software designed to protect your PC against offline attacks, unauthorized access typically if your PC gets stolen. BitLocker is full disk encryption software. More info:>> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitLocker>> http://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-bitlocker-encryption-windows-10 BitLocker was activated by someone and during the activation time it prompts the user to save/store the key in a safe place. If this is company owned asset/PC, you should turn to your company's IT support guys and they should be able to provide you with the recovery key. If this is your own device, most probably you use a slightly different BitLocker version for certain PCs and tablets known as Device encryption. Probably your key is stored in Microsoft OneDrive with your Microsoft account here :>> https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey More info>> https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/12/microsoft-may-have-your-encryption-key-heres-...>> http://windowsitpro.com/microsoft-surface/locating-your-microsoft-surface-bitlocker-recovery-key>> http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21433-bitlocker-recovery-unlock-drive-windows-8-a.html Please, note that it is very important for security reasons that you keep the encryption key (Bitlocker key) in a secure place so that only you know it. Let me know if this works for you ... If you format the encrypted drive, it will pretty much destroy any chance of recovering the drive.

A:bitlocker security RECOVERY

Hello Kelly, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You would have already needed to save your BitLocker recovery key to another location for safe keeping to be able to use it.

If you did, then you can use the tutorial below that's for your OS or removable drive for how to know what recovery key to use from the recovery ID.

BitLocker Drive Encryption - Unlock a Locked OS Drive

BitLocker Drive Encryption - Unlock a Locked Data or Removable Drive

BitLocker Repair Tool - Recover Drive in Windows 7 and 8

Hope this helps,
Shawn
