Reinstalling Hard Disk Drivers

Q: Reinstalling Hard Disk Drivers

Basically, I accidentally uninstalled the drivers for my secondary hard drive that I only used for storage through device manager. Now it shows the hard drive under Other devices. When I open the properties for it it shows that there are no drivers installed for it (obviously). So my question is, how do I reinstall the drivers for it so vista recognizes it as a disk drive? I've tried connecting it to different SATA ports, which didn't work. It is recognized in the BIOS and there is nothing wrong with the hard drive since I can access it from another computer. I've reinstalled motherboard drivers and I also did the "search for drivers" for the hard drive through windows but nothing was found. Any help would be appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi, my dad's hard drive crashed and so he has just bought another, now he needs to reinstall Windows XP Home but unfortunately he doesnt have a disk as its an HP machine and a disc was never supplied, the operating system was already on the computer and the option of making a recovery disc was available but he never actually undertook that option

So he needs to get Windown back on his computer, he has the serial sticker on the side of his machine, he rang up HP and they said the machine is not in warranty - they cant send him a replacement disc - so what are his options?

I have seen at pcworld (uk) XP sells for about £200!, now he might aswell buy a new system for that price, i have also seen an OEM version for sale on the web for about £50 but im not quite sure what this means, does it come with an activation key at all?

Anyway if he obtained a XP Home disc and entered his serial number do you think HP would actually send him the activiation code by email or over the phone, surely they have to right?

Basically there is no way he is going to pay £200 but he needs a legitimate copy of XP back as he already owns one but cant revive it, any help would be much appreciated,

Thanks! Richard

A:Question About Reinstalling XP Onto New Hard Disk When OS Disk Is No Longer Available

The sticker on your dad's pc is likely for an OEM install and so it will not work with any other version. Your best bet would be to buy XP Home OEM which does come with a CD key. £50 is about right.

Hello,

I was in the process of updating my drivers on a new hard drive (Old one failed), after re-installing windows 7 on it, when i got a BSOD. I feel like it might have something to do with one of the drivers i installed/re-installed, but the log's below so feel free to have a look. I've created a number of restore points as well as a system repair disk.

Thanks!

My secondery disk (2-year old, 60GB, IDE, transferred from my previous machine) started making really bad noises. It took me a couple of weeks to come to terms with, but finally (after it got to the chainsaw stage) I made backups, disengaged the elec. pin and went out and bought a brand new, SATA drive (my motherboard is IDE/SATA compatible). However... I suddenly realised I've forgotten to back up my most important data (the music library ).
Hoping for the best, I reconnected the old disk, and turned the computer on. First two tries - the dreaded clicking sound, Windows comes up but no second hard drive, just "click-click" sound affect. Third try - starts promising, disc working (noise and all), start-up sequence gets all the way to the "boot from disc" option - and then nothing, black screen. I tried again, a couple of times, but the result was the same.
Anyone has any ideas? I have a large part of the music backed-up, but a lot of it isn't (including all of my ripped vinyl collection). TIA

A:Problem reinstalling hard drive disk

Take the drive out and stick it in the fridge for an hour so so, then try again.
This might introduce condensation on the drive as it heats back up, but I've had fair luck getting data off an otherwise dead drive by cooling it first, then blowing a fan on it while recovering data.

A:Reinstalling Windows or Reformatting Hard Disk?

Without knowing what problems you are experiencing, if you want to start from scratch with a "clean system" you should format.Boot to your OS disc. Choose the option to delete the existing partition and then recreate it. Format. Install. After installing you'll need to download and install all drivers starting with the chipset driver and followed by the video driver, sound driver, etc. Obtain the drivers from the website of your laptop manufacturer, not from Windows Update. Next install a GOOD anti virus application. Then download and install all Windows Updates (except for hardware / driver updates as previously explained). If you need more detailed instructions you can look at any or all of these links:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/install-reinstall-uninstallhttp://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

Yes, if you reinstall windows over you current partition, it will completely wipe all your data. Now if you do a "system repair" it will just reinstall the window system files and all your data is left untouched.

Hopefully someone here can help me with this.

So I had to reset factory settings on my laptop today and when reinstalling Windows Vista I accidentally installed it twice, I did not realise this until afterwards, this could be part of the problem.

After installing drivers and everything I realised that in "My Computer" it said that the hard drive (C: ) only has around 20Gb out of 58Gb remaining, when irl the drive is at least 160Gb - 200Gb and before the reinstalling Windows there was over 80-100Gb free!
*I'd Just like to add I only have 2 Hard Disk Drives available/listed in "My Computer": 'Vista (C: )' and 'System(S: )'

Now, I think this could be because I installed windows on the wrong drive? I remember when I installed windows, there were 3 drives available, 2 of them had "primary" next to them and I just chose the first one which was the largest and had "primary" next to it.

It also may partly be to do with me installing Windows twice but this is probably less to do with this issue.

could someone tell me how I can either undo this or retrieve the missing space somehow?

Big Thanks in advance! <3

Hi,
When a Seagate hard disk (ST3500418AS) or Plextor SSD are connected to my Win7 x64 Ultimate installation, no driver is found even via Windows Update.
The drivers should be included in Win7 hence AFAIK there are no such drivers available from the manufacturer's sites.

BTW, the drives previously worked on the machine, so it appears that something has gone awry.
Also, both drives are recognised in the BIOS.

MS Security Essentials and also Malwarebytes Anti-Malware can not find any viruses or malware.

Any suggestions?.

I have two terabyte external hard drives by Fantom. Had them a few years. It's been about 6 months since I've been able to access either one of them. I've searched the Internet for the drivers, as ONE of them says the driver is gone, and the other can't be "seen" at all. Is there any FREE site that could help that you know of? IF i have to pay one of the Driver "services" websites, does anyone have a good one to recommend? I'm worried about these drives, and need to get the info off of them soon.

As a side thought, I will be looking today & tomorrow in these Black Friday sales for a drive or two to replace these. Any words of wisdom on what to buy or steer clear of or even great deals, let me know. I'm lost as a goose as to what to get.

This is an amazing site. I've searched it for years and gotten great advice and help. I believe TODAY is the first time I've posted.

Is the problem something that's happened after upgrading from another version of Windows 7? There's precious little extra for home users in Ultimate apart from the ability to switch languages easily and it costs twice as much money. Ultimate's more suitable for businesses wanting to use a network and such things as "nodeless discs" whatever they may be.

Hi: See if this works... I have zipped up and attached the W7 32 bit storage controller drivers below. Download and unzip the files to their folder. Get a USB flash drive and copy the files in the folder to the flash drive. With the flash drive and W7 installation media in the PC, boot from the W7 installation media. After you select the install now option, select the Drive Options - Advanced menu, then select the Load Driver option. You should now see the storage driver files listed. If you check the box, it will only include the compatible driver. Follow the prompts and hopefully, W7 will install.

I have a problem. when trying to install XP I can't get the drivers to load from the CD it wants them In A: drive and that's too much information for a diskette, Can anyone help me out on this?

A:Installing Hard disk sata Drivers

It depends on the motherboard but often the SATA/RAID drivers are not just copied directly from the CD to the floppy. Motherboard driver CDs often have drivers for different chipsets and different operating systems. In these cases a utility program on the CD is used so you can select the correct drivers which will fit on the floppy diskette. Directions on how to make the SATA driver floppy are usually in the motherboard manual.

It would be better if we knew what motherboard you have.

Hi, my issues are two-fold.

After asking the guys at the shop who put my computer together to partition the hard drive, they must've forgotten.

I'm a full-time student heading toward a level 6 diploma in ICT, just started learning diskpart, etc. So it's good practice for me to make right what they didn't do.

Have read many forums trying to work out what to do because I can only shrink this Western Digital (WD5000AAKS) 500GB to half it's size (when what I really want is Windows 7 on C drive at only 50GB's).

Have tried a custom install but it asks me for SATA drivers which I cannot for the life of me find to download.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Pauli

P.S: The second part of the problem is RAM related, should I fix that first before doing the fresh install, or? I purchased 4GB of RAM but right clicking computer properties shows Installed memory (RAM): 2.00 GB. Right-clicking on my-PC and choosing properties does show 2 yellow warnings with exclamation marks. The first one is PCI Simple Communications Controller but clicking the update driver part comes back with "Windows was unable to install your..." Windows could not find driver software for your device. It doesn't have any driver provider details (Unkown) so not sure how to go about fixing that?
And the second exclamation mark says Unkown Device (could that be the missing RAM?)

A:Correct SATA Drivers for hard disk controller?

1. What kind of motherboard do you have? You'll have to go to their site and get the SATA/RAID drivers for your board.
2. 32 or 64 bit? 32 bit will only recognize up to 3.0 or 3.5 GB of RAM.

I checked in device manager and everything else seemed to be okay except under other devices/multimedia controller had the yellow question mark. I even went to Dell's downloads to get the same exact file and try it but it didn't work. The file for it was R58182. I did some searching on the net about this issue and there were other folks that had run into this problem but I couldn't find any resolution to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

My company's computer needs to be patitioned and reformat. The system is still working well. I mean, nothing wrong with anything (weird huh?). Ok the hard disk just need to be 'split'. But the main problem occured before I do anything (partition & format). I have my own bootable CD that I usually use for partitioning & formatting.

Ok, i insert the CD & restart.
I went to BIOS & changed the boot order (1st boot: CD-ROM, 2nd: HDD-0 & 3rd: Floppy). Then restart again.
Ok the bootable CD is excellently loaded.
I typed fdisk, then came the first problem. it says something like 'no fixed disk'. I exit fdisk.
Then I typed format c:, 2nd problem occured. it says something like, 'invalid drive'.
I forgot the error message because the pc is in my office right now. I'm currently at home 'begging for help' So the error message is not accurate. sorry..

I think, if I run the CD, the hard disk will not be loaded (or should I say, hard disk failure). & If I take off the CD & restart again, change the BIOS (1st boot: HDD-0) then windows will load! Weird right?

I don't think my CD is 'corrupted' nor broken because I tried to run the CD from another PC. Yes, I can access the C drive from that PC.

A:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

I need to reformat and reinstall Windows XP on my Dell Dimension 8200, which is about 5 year old. It is my understanding that first you reinstall XP and then you have to reinstall the drivers. I am not sure how to reinstall the drivers.

When I ordered my computer from Dell, it came with things like a monitor, printer, speakers, video card, and sound card.

The computer also came with a cd that is labeled "Drivers and Utilities". The cd is also labeled "Dell Dimension ResourceCD for Reinstalling Device Drivers and Using Diagnostics, Utilities, and Online Documentation".

Will this cd install all of the necessary drivers for all of the hardware that came with my computer? For instance, my video card is a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420. Will the cd have the drivers for this, or will it only have some sort of generic video drivers?

If the cd does have all the necessary drivers, how do I use it to actually install them? Do I just click some button and the cd will automatically install all the necessary drivers?

Last, is there some program I can use that will make copies of my already existing device drivers so that I can use them as a last resort.

It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

Greetings,

I have an Asus laptop running windows 7 64 bit and this laptop came with 2 hard drives, each partitioned into two parts (C:\ & D:\ and E:\ & F:\).

I am transferring over 30GB of data from one drive (C:\) to the other (F:\)

Get this... the transfer rate is 1.2MB/s right now. Over 9 hours left to copy the 30GB. There are over 125,000 items but that still does not justify the 1.2MB/s

I am open to any suggestions but first, a few points.
Yes, I am sure they are two separate drives with those partitions.
Error checking showed zero errors on both drives.
This is the 3rd time I am trying a transfer.
Both drives are relatively empty (especially the F:\).
C:\ is my system disk.
The SMART data shows no read/write errors or overheating.
I have disabled the virus protection and all real-time scanning.

Again, I am very open to suggestions and checks. Feel free to post your idea!

Thanks in advance!

A:Laptop Hard Disk to Hard Disk transfer Extremely Slow

My experience with file transfers of the type you describe...is that the number of files doesn't matter...what matters is how large the files are.  Video files take much longer than text or document files.

Slow transfer rates between partitions/drives...can indicate a problem with either the partititon or the drive, IMO.

only conclusion i come to is that my hard disk is kaput which it shouldnt be. Can anyone give me any other possible solutions to try out before i cry and/or spend money on a new one? theres a lot of data on it i dont want to lose.

If not, ill plug it in to another computer to check, i havent done that yet because it will take me hours - i can only unscrew the hard drive from one side without rearranging the room.

ty!

A:Hard disk boot failure -> computer won't recognise hard disk

Is your Seagate the 7200.11 series?

We've been seeing a lot of harddrive issues layely that has nothing to do with the drive itself but bad SATA cables aas the cause. Do you have another one you can switch out?

When you say the computer doesn't recognize it we're talking the BIOS here, correct?

Another suggestion is what you have already suggested but I would "slave" it in antother system and see if you can access it that way.

Whenever I turn my desktop ON, all me my hardware suddenly starts re installing itself and then i'm prompted to restart. And when i restart, the same cycle repeats itself. Also, i use my phone's bluetooth connection to connect to the internet on my pc, so is this bluetooth causing the problem. I'm using a v2.0 usb dongle with bluesoleil.

Please help..
Thanks..

A:The Drivers Keep ReINSTALLING themselves!

Hello ronnie141, to TSF>

Firstly, let's try starting the desktop with the Bluetooth? and the USB 2.0 dongle disconnected.
If this is not successful; start the computer while continually tapping the F8 key, this will take you to a screen with a number of listings; such as, Safe Mode, and including Last known good configuration.
Select Last Known Good configuration, and allow the PC to reboot.
All should be normal by now...post back with the outcome of these two suggestions.

I have been having some computer problems, services.exe running at 100%. Could not pin point to exact problems so I thougt I would install windows into another folder and then delete the old one , found the instruction on another forum. Well I finally managed to do that but now I am stuck reinstalling my drivers. Could someone please help me?

I have the cd that dell sent when I first bought the laptop. Thanks in advance.

A:need help reinstalling drivers

You can go HERE and enter the required info for your particular make and model of your machine. That will take you to the page with the required drivers. Not sure what disk Dell includes. If it is labeled as Drivers and Utilities then you should be able to pop it in your optical drive and follow the instructions that come up on screen.

Hi all,
I upgraded to Win 7 x64 a few wks past and initially all went well. However, since then, I've discovered that I have to keep reinstalling drivers for all my plug & play hardware. Once I reinstall they work fine for that session, but then on a reboot, I have to once again reinstall. I'm doing so through the device right click/Troubleshoot option.

When I first noticed it on the Kindle I thought it was because it wasn't compatible for x64 or something & indeed the Kindle tech I spoke to stated that, BUT others with the same model as me use theirs on an x64 platform without any diffs.

So I'm really unsure whether it is a compatibility issue etc or something else. For 2 of the devices I downloaded the specific drivers & updated manually, where the other device I let Windows find the driver itself.

Anyone any suggestions either how to check where the problem is coming from or else ideas on how best to fix it?

Thanks.

I'm about to reformat an old computer. No problem with the reformat, but I'm a little confused when it comes to installing the audio, sound, ethernet drivers. My disk contains more than one for each of these, therefore I don't know which one to use. My OS is XP. After the reformat can I just go to the device manager and select update manager, set location to the cd?

A:reinstalling drivers?

Hi,

Once you have formatted...you should install the chipset driver first...this sort of configures all the other drivers to install correctly....i then normally do the audio and graphics and ethernet...im not sure just how important those are in any particular order as i have not had any problems doing it that way....just make sure the chipset goes in first!

Once xp is installed, either load the disc on autoplay or via "my computer"...just click on the cd icon...you should then be able to choose what drivers you wish to download

Dont forget the windows updates...they will be automatic and will probably take ages

Hi, I'm new to the forum! I'm reformatting my computer and upgrading it to Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit from Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit. I have already done the check to make sure all my hardware is compatible; it is. My question is what drivers do I need exactly? My list so far has: Chipset Graphics card Sound Card Ethernet Card Am I missing any? Aside from that I need a bit of help with the chipset/GPU driver. I have an nForce 430 chipset with integrated GeForce 6150LE however I have purchased an ATI Radeon HD 4350 graphics card and have been running off of that. My question in regard to the chipset driver is firstly, where is the nForce driver download? I am unable to find this specific chipset on nVidia's website and secondly if I find a driver will the graphic card drivers come bundled with it? If so, is there a way to get the chipset driver without the graphic driver for the integrated GPU. Thanks!

First you need to know what hardware you have ie motherboard, video card, etc. Once you know that, then download the drivers for your hardware. Burn them to a CD.

From your post I assume you want to clean install windows. Is that correct?

Hello, I have a Pavilion G7-1365DX that I just reinstalled Windows 7 with. The icons are very large, and the internet doesn't work. Those are the only two things that I noticed right off the top. I know I need to install the drivers, but when I searched all the drivers on the HP website, I wasn't sure which exact ones I needed after installing the OS again.  Which drivers are typically needed after installing Windows 7?  Also, am I supposed to download from another computer and put it on a USB, so I can install it from the USB on my laptop without working internet?  Lastly, do required drivers differ widely from model to model of HP laptops when installing a new OS?

Not every time but what seems like nearly every time I switch from battery to AC or visa versa the Bluetooth drivers reinstall (about 5 of them) and say "device is ready". The only BT devices I have at the moment are a wireless mouse and a portable printer which I seldom, if ever use BT.

Anyway to get the laptop to accept the current drivers without searching and reinstalling?

Windows is freezing when I try to select my Handycam HC30 mini DV cam thru firewire for capture, until I unplug the device. Actually, first it'll say "cannot locate" a vid-cap device, but then after a bunch of time it'll kinda find it, but then just chokes trying to interface; locking up the system until unplug.

This problem has been happening since I did a fresh install of XP SP2, whereas before on the identical machine and platform it worked fine (reinstalled due to a corrupted boot sector).

I think the root problem may be that the PnP drivers Windows installed got corrupted when installed (a bubble at lower right said there may be problems with the installation). There don't seem to be custom drivers for this cam, nor are there any removable devices that I can see in device manager, so if someone can help me figure out how to remove this device (or other fix I'm not thinking of) so that I can try fresh again, that'd help alot.

FYI: The device does make the appropriate sound when you plug it in or out, and it still works w/same cable on a mac.

Windows 7 Home Premium X64 keeps re-installing the same existing USB drivers every time I plug in an USB device. This means every time I plug in my Wireless mouse, my printer, scanner, external hard drive... and so on I have to wait minutes before I can start using the device. Also, it does not just re-install the drivers from the hard disk, it does a lengthy check via windows update before it installs anything.

Does anybody know how to fix this? Thanks.

After installing Windows 7 32 bit, I cannot connect to the internet. It says drivers are not available.
It is a HP desktop, so does hp provide these drivers? I went looking anyway and started and cancelled the download because HP's servers are very slow and the downloads are averaging 10 KB/s.
What has to be installed and are there alternative sites to hp?

HP Software and Driver Downloads for HP Printers, Laptops, Desktops and More | HP® Customer Support download the Wireless connectivity driver from here. If you don't have a wired connection, you can download on another machine and transfer.

If the download speed is too slow at the above link and if you have a Wired connection already, you can install IoBit Driver Booster that will show certified drivers missing in your laptop along with available updates.
There's an opinion that some drivers shown by such apps are not stable to use. That shouldn't be the case with the wireless driver. I recommend not to download/update other drivers. Just look for the Wireless driver it suggests and download it.
There are alternatives though, like Drivereasy.

I recently decided to switch back to Vista after using the Win7 RC version for several weeks, due to problems with my USB devices that I couldn't figure out how to resolve.

So I ended up having to reformat my laptop, which I wasn't happy with at all.

So I go about reinstalling Vista, get everything set up, and I'm instantly confronted with several problems. One, my resolution is stuck at 1024x786, instead of the 1366x678 I previously had, with no option to change it. Two, I have no internet and the diagnostics tells me that my hardware isn't even properly installed.

I go to device manager and there are several things flagged with an exclamation point, which leads me to assume that I'm missing some drivers. I go to the resource and utilities CD, but I really have no idea what to download and what not to. I also can't seem to find my adapter driver anywhere on the CD.

I just want my laptop back to the way it was before I was dumb enough to not put Win7 on a separate partition.

Help, anyone?
