New laptop, can't connect to wifi at home but can at school

Q: New laptop, can't connect to wifi at home but can at school

So basically got my school laptop yesterady, the internet worked fine at school but when I came home it wouldn't work. When I came to school again today it worked, when I came home again it wouldn't.

The internet connection showed that it was connected () but I don't got internet acess. Some restarts I have internet (pretty slow) just on the beginning, sometimes pages just loads forever or very long without connecting and sometimes it just loads a little bit and says network error.

I've been working with trying to fix it all day yesterday and like one hour today, and now I just want to get it done so I came here to make a thread. My network is fine with the computers/telephones in my house so it's not the router.

I've tried to use the windows network error checking tool, it just says that the strandard gateway isn't available (which is not getting automatically resolved) and it identifies a problem aswell that the connection between the router and internet has disconnected.

I have tried to...

* Restarted
* Changing battery network card settings to high priority
* Disconnecting, reconnecting
* Re-typing wifi password
* Deactivating ipv6
* Using a DNS
* Few CMD commands
* Changing an option called "dulex/rulex someting" or something that tells how much mb/s you should receive (or something like that) from router to automatically detect to 100mb/s, didn't make any difference either
..and more

windows 7 enterprise edition, i5, 4gb ram, 500gb HDD etc, everything new.
None of my other friends at school got this issue. I asked the computer guy but he's stupid, he asked me like 5 times if I had the right wifi password etc...
Help? :/

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: New laptop, can't connect to wifi at home but can at school

This is quite simple - The School is using a proxy within Internet Explorer. You must have admin rights for this to work.

On Internet Explorer, - Tools - Internet Options - Connections - LAN Settings - Untick the bottom box (Proxy)

Close and re-open IE, everything should be working.

Make sure you make a note as you will need to re-tick the box when you're next at school.

About a week ago, our cable internet connection went out. Before I had a chance to reboot the modem & router, my 11 year old decided to completely reset the router to factory settings! Ugh! This caused several issues: my home network is now gone, only a unsecured factory network is available. When I try to plug my laptop into the router via ethernet cord (in order to login to router and setup secure network) my computer will not recognize the router and won't connect to internet. I tried troubleshooting with my cable provider and they say it's in my computer (IP address will not reset) and he recommended I replace my network card. However, today when I brought my laptop to work, it will instantly recognize the wifi at work. So is it really my network card that is causing issues? Please help, I'm desperate and not tech too tech savvy!

Hi, My lenovo laptop, which I have used for 3 years, suddenly had a problem connecting to my house's high speed wifi. Other devices are able to connect to my home wifi but my laptop has intermittent and slow connection to the wifi, sometimes my laptop cannot even detect my house wifi and the signal is usually 0 bars even though I am very near my wifi modem. I have tried restarting my wifi card and reseting the saved networks but the problem still persists. Would be great if anyone has a solution. Thank You.

Firstly, I want to say that I know this is something that should be asked about at my school - and I did. I reached the Tech Office twice, and they said that they have no idea why it doesn't work for me. Anywho, here goes.

There is a wifi connection in my cafeteria that I can pick up on, and it is an "Open" network - and so I try connecting to it. The tech that I called said "after connecting to it, you should be able to open internet explorer - and it will take you to a page that requires your student ID and password - before you can continue on and browse the internet". So, I try connecting to the network. The connection never finalizes. It'll take minutes trying to connect, and yes, I do even have a green bar (strong signal). Then it seems to give up. I've tried using my USB Linksys wifi adapter as well, and I'm only given a message similar to: "Cannot associate with the access point".

To clarify, my internet wifi card DOES work. I'm using it now, at the library. I have tried asking different teachers and students... and have called the Tech Help desk twice - and even updated my wireless driver. Yet, it still does not work. I have a Dell D600 Latitude laptop, if it helps...

Added: I am able to use wifi in the computer lab in a separate building, but it's a different connection and does not have a portal login page of sorts.

Hi, I need to please ask that you be patient with me as I have an extremely limited knowledge of computers or laptops, so I am actually struggling to even word this question correctly! I have an HP G60 laptop with Windows XP.

I had WiFi installed at my university digs, and I believe I am the main laptop through which the internet connection runs. My parents have recently had a WiFi (Netgear router) installed on their home computer , but I am unable to connect to the internet through my laptop. i was told that as my laptop IP address was set to my university WiFi connection, all i had to do was reset my laptop's IP address and I would be able to connect to my parents WiFi.. However I am really unsure of how to do this, and am also concerned that if I do so I will be unable to connect my Uni WiFi once I return! Or even if this in indeed the problem!

Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

welcome to tsg

would you do the following
{ipconfig /all}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here
We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results here
-> Start
-> (XP - enter the following in the RUN box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all
-> (Vista or Windows 7 - enter the following in the Search box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all

A black box will appear on the screen -

then reply here and

Hey guys,

I've got a Dell work laptop. It has McAfee Safeboot and other work related security things. I don't have many "privileges" on the machine. It connects to my work wifi network just fine (automatically) but I can't get it to connect to any wifi networks outside of work. If go to network settings and look at the wireless adapter and view available wifi networks, nothing comes up. It looks like the laptop has an alternative program that controls network adapter (Dell network adapter program) but it won't open when I double click it.

Any thoughts on where to start? What more info would you like?

A:Connect work laptop to home wifi

Have a talk with your work IT department and see if they can check it out for you. Then I would make sure that all the drivers are updated, not through MS but through each vendors website, especially the network adapter.

At Best Buy they said that there's nothing wrong with my laptop. I'm past the return policy and only have manufactures warranty. It works on other wifi. Also other devices connect to the home wifi just fine.My laptop used to work on the wifi. Something popped up saying there's a problem and Windows can automatically fix it, so I let it. Ever since when I try to connect it'll say connecting is taking longer than usual. And then it says can't connect to network. The Internet at my house is HughesNet, and the router is Belkin, but what I don't get is why my laptop connected to the wifi just fine before but now it doesn't.I rebooted it before I went to Best Buy, but that didn't fix the problem. But like I said, they said that my laptop has no problem. They said that it might be the Internet Service Provider or the wireless router. Every other device connects just fine still. And my laptop connects to other wifi still. I'm at a loss here.

In trying to research this issue online, I almost feel like I'm imagining things... I'm a pretty tech savvy guy but just can't figure out why I'm having this new issue..

My daughters each received a school issued chrome book (2 chromebooks in total)... They are supposed to complete all school work on them.

Pretty cool... Free chrome books... The issue arises at home. When they use the home WiFi (supported by xfinity issued WiFi rental router)... All other users are, in effect booted from their pre-existing connections... It feels like the new Chromebooks are taking a priority over WiFi connection.

Now... last year, my daughters each used a laptop (not issued by school) for their work... Last year no one lost their existing WiFi connection... The rest of the family is using windows (laptop) or android (phone) products.

In comparison from year to year there is an equal count of devices that would consume a WiFi signal.. Again.. The only difference is that two laptops were flipped to chrome books

When the girls finish their homework, everyone else can get back online...
My question

It feels like the chrome books are set up in a way such that they will have priority over consuming signal... Perhaps even trading taking a bigger chunk...

If this is the case, if I'm not crazy, is there a network setting somewhere where I could affect said priority and said consumption rate... At this point ... These free chromebooks, originally meant to increase p... Read more

My laptop has XP Home, and when the computer guy when to put in the networks domain, he said there was no place to put in the domain only a work"group" which wouldn't work.

How do I go about getting it to work? He said there is a network card so it should be able to work, but he's not sure how to do it.

Is it even possible with the Home edition or do I need the Professional edition?
If it's possible what do we do?

Hello Everyone,

I have a friend who's having issues with the speed of her net at home, on one particular laptop. She just purchased a new Asus laptop not too long ago and while she's at ODU her speeds are fine, when shes home it drops very low. She also has another laptop and desktop that are perfectly fine, and get the top speed their isp provides.

On the problem laptop (the Asus)
Shes running windows 7 64 bit, the router is a Linksys E1200, the network card itself is an Atheros AR9485

Her speeds at home are : 0.52 mbps on the Asus, while her other laptop and desktop gets 33 mbps
Her speed at school is 28 mbps on the Asus

So we are trying to figure out why her Asus wants to act up at home and not at school

A:Very slow internet speeds at home, but not at school on one laptop

it does not sound like a computer problem -- may be a router/wireless/network setting problem--to try to eliminate possibilities...
try plugging the machine into the router directly with a cable--if the speed picks up then there's a setting somewhere that needs a tweak.

Hi there,

I have a new problem that has just cropped up today. I am no longer able to connect to public wifi or my phone's wireless hotspot. My laptop either will not connect or connect with limited access. It has connected without issue in the past and as soon as I returned home it connected to my wifi here.

What I did notice is I am connected to an unidentified network with no internet access in addition to my home wireless network:
Acer Aspire S7 392
Windows 8.1 64 bit
Intel Dual Band Wireless 7260 (driver updated)
Disabled my firewall and antivirus

I just connected to my phone's hotspot again and here is what I am coming up with:
Attachment 57082

And when I run ipconfig/renew
Attachment 57083

Any ideas what could be causing this?

I've read through hundreds of posts trying to figure out my issue. Unfortunately, I've been unsuccessful.

Here's the issue, I was given a new laptop for work and it connects fine to our secure wireless network at the office, but when I brought it home it will not connect to my wireless network at home.

When I try to connect to my network at home the wireless manager sits and spins saying "trying to acquire network address". I have 2 iPhones, 1 eMachine and 1 Macbook connected to my network working fine and dandy. However, the HP laptop from work simply won't connect unless wired.

I have tried the following:
1. Uninstalled and reinstalled the driver.
2. Power Cycled my Router
3. Power Cycled my entire network
4. WinsockXPFix tool

I'm completely at a loss here. No idea what to do to fix this. I'm running Windows XP and have a 2Wire router.

I appreciate any advice anyone can give me to help solve this annoyance.

I have issues connecting my Laptop to the Wifi router in my house, however, there are no issues connecting to other routers? You would therefore assume that the issue lies with the router at my house. However, every other device and laptop connects to the router at my house with no issues at all. So it seems to be specific to the combination of my laptop and the router at my house. I have been having these issues ever since I downloaded Windows 10. I fixed it initially by downloading an old driver for the Wifi on my laptop. This fix lasted for about 3 months but since the latest windows update, the issue has come back. The issue is intermittent wifi where it shows I am connected to the Wifi but then the internet doesn't work. It says "DNS probe cannot be found" when running troubleshooter and then it resets the wifi on my laptop. This can temporalily fix it, sometimes for 2 seconds. Sometimes for 2 hours. But then the issue comes back. Does anyone have any clue what the issue might be or how I might fix it? Sometimes, when I run the troubleshooter, it says that I have missing protocols. But then this doesn't happen every time. I have tried a variety of fixes that I have read up on in forums but none seem to work permantly. One thing I haven't tried is a clean install of windows 10 which is something I am very reluctant to do and also, have my doubts as to whether it would actually resolve the issue.
Many thanks,

A:Wifi issue specific to my laptop and home wifi

It all depends on location, location, location. Some Gateways are just garbage. If you are not getting a strong enough signal, get an Access Point. Also you need to make sure that you are not on a congested channel, which is usually Channels 6 & 11 for 2.4 Ghz units.

My laptop will not connect to the new home wifi for some reason. I have never connected to this wifi before. When I put in the current wifi password which we made ourselves it says it is incorrect. However when I put in the original password that came with the router it just says it "can't connect". I don't know if that means anything, but the main issue is that the laptop will not connect to the wifi when all of my other devices had no issue.

A:Can't connect to Wifi on home network but everyone else can

I think its a security issue.
1) Check the password you put in and make sure its written correctly with the right case (lowercase/uppercase).
2) Disable any 3G/4G connections if you have any.

If that doesn't work giive me more information about your network:
1) General network layout (two computers, one laptop/one desktop, w/dsl modem to a residential gateway, etc)
2) Also, tell me what security mechanism you have on your wireless access point (WEP, WPA, WPA2). If you're using CCMP/AES and you have an older computer then you may not be able to use them together.

I was given 2X Proline tablets that are about 2-3yrs old and identical. One has been reset to factory defaults, the other not. Both tablets will connect via WiFi anywhere but at home through my own router. The service provider blames the tablets and visa versa, so can get no meaningful help from either. My laptop, PC and cellphone all connect to Wifi via my home router. The tablets tell me the Wifi signal is excellent, it is turned on, it tries to connect and repeatedly gives me this same message in both tablets - Connecting.....Obtaining IP address......Authenticating.......then nothing it just keeps repeating the process! I have deleted the password and re-entered it several times, but it makes no difference. On odd occasions a message appeared that said Authenticating problem. As everything else connects with no problems to my router I can only assume some setting has to be changed in the tablets???? Any help would be most appreciated. I am technically challenged to a large degree, so please keep it simple so I can understand any suggestions as if there is a way round this problem.

A:Tablet won't connect to WiFi at home.

The tablets probably don't support the current encryption settings being used on the router. You may have to set them a bit lower. That's why you are getting encryption issue messages. Even if you are using the same password, if the protocols are incorrect, it won't work.

If I try to connect manually, it will say "unable to connect to network" and that's it, no more clues! The only way I can connect is by selecting 'restart' and then it will re-boot and connect automatically. If I 'shut-down' after use (or hibernate) it will not re-connect until I have selected 're-start' which is time consuming and annoying!

Any ideas? Thanks

We will need your system specs in order to help you.

This is most likely a driver problem but we need more info in order to find the correct driver.

I have a Cisco Lynksis Router Model WRT120N - which is connect wirelessly to my MAC home computer. I also have a Dell D630 Laptop using WindowsXP. I have recently moved and my laptop used to connect to my wireless router (when I was at my old house) But now at my new house my laptop wont connect. It will connect wirelessly at other locations. The laptop picks up the wireless name and shows full strength. I have trouble shot a little. Help Please!

A:Unable to connect to wifi at home

Do you have service pack 3?

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I have a 4 year old Asus laptop that has been great through out the years. My son installed Skype and now it doesn't connect to the wireless network in my house on boot up. I have uninstalled Skype, but the problem still persists.
I have to run the trouble shooter and applied the fix it suggests. The problem found is, "Wireless capability is turned off." Applying this fix works every time until the machine is put to sleep or powered down, then it has to be done all over again. Curiously, when I press Fn + F2 I can disconnect from the wireless network, but when I press it again, it does nothing. I have to run the trouble shooter to connect again.
I have updated all my drivers directly from Intel and have made sure that the correct services and their depencies are all started.  Nothing seems to work.
Another Problem Found that the Trouble Shooter detects is, "A network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken." I have tried to fix this problem, but have not been successful.  As far as I can tell, the cables are fine.  I don't know if the two problems are related, I would think so.
Any suggestions on how to automatically connect to my wireless network without having to run the trouble shooter would be great. Thanks.

The above problem just means you don't have the Ethernet cable plugged in. If you do have the Ethernet plugged in, then you have a problem though!
For the above problem and the wireless issue I would do a System Restore to before Skype was installed, and see if that fixes it.

My laptop suddenly became unable to connect to my home wifi. When I try, it tries to connect for a few seconds and then i get the message "can't connect to this network". until this happened i connected to it without problems. other laptops (housemates) can still connect to it as always without problems. my laptop can still, as, always, connect without problems to all other wifis. I've tried updating windows, then restoring, i upgraded to windows 8.1, i tried changing the security settings, rebooting the wifi, all the troubleshooting i could find on my computer. any ideas? is it more likely to be a problem with the wifi or with my laptop?

A:windows 8.1 can't connect to home wifi

in windows 8
forget the wireless network
so that you reconnect and have to re-enter the password
if still a problem

turn the router off for 5 mins and backon again - try again
if still a problem

try removing the password from the router and see if it will then connect
if it does then put the password backon

Hi guys,
I got this Windows 8 laptop some 2 months ago, everything was perfect until today.
I just cannot connect to my home wifi network.

Extra info:
- wifi light is on on laptop.
- can see other wifi network connections from neighborhood, but not my home one.
- when I manually type name of home network it says "network already installed", but still won't let it appear.
- iPhone and iPad don't have problems connecting to wifi network.
- iPhone, iPad and said PC all connected on same network for weeks in same room, never a conflict issue.

Couldn't sort it...please let me know if you have a trick.
Much appreciated.
Thank you.

First try powering your PC off and on. If that does not help, reboot your router and/or data modem (power them off & on). I have had my router stop working with one device while still working fine with others, a reboot fixed it.

Just to start off, I am COMPLETELY clueless and have no tech savvy whatsoever, so simple language would be appreciated

I've owned this laptop for a little over a year, and all this time I've been able to connect to Wifi without a problem. This morning the icon at the bottom left of the screen told me there was no Internet connection available. when I troubleshot it, it suggested using the Ethernet cord to connect. The Ethernet cord connects them fine, and the internet connection becomes available, but I'm still unable to use the Wifi.

This is an issue with my laptop, because all the other devices in my house are able to connect to the Wifi, and the modem is showing all the appropriate lights and such. I've tried turning it off and on again, but alas, this once that method has failed :/ I've also tried resetting the modem, and it made no difference.

Last night I was uninstalling various programs that I didn't need, and that's the only thing I've done differently to my usual computing habits. I don't think I removed anything unless I knew what it was, but it's possible I accidently removed something important. I don't know if that has any relevance or not, but it's all I can think of as the reason for this.

My laptop is a Toshiba Qosmio, and the system I use is Windows 7.

My modem is Telstra Bigpond.

Please help! D:

How far from the router are you? I experience the same thing occasionally on my laptop.
I usually have to switch the wifi switch off on the laptop & on then I reboot & I'm back online. My laptop & tower are both about 50' away & on the lower floor where the router is. Good luck.

Hi all

I have a home network set up, sharing the broadband connection successfully throughout the house via a Linksys broadband router. We have four laptops, and two desk based machines and each can connect to the internet without issue.

On one of the desk based PCs I have a Laserjet HL5150D connected and shared. The PC it is connected to runs XP Home SP1 edition.

I can connect and print to this printer from all machines except my wife's new Sony Vaio laptop. When I try to add a network printer, and browse the windows network it simply doesn't find it at all. Whereas I am on my dell laptop and can search and locate the printer without issue.

The Sony Vaio can connect to the net without issue, is only a few months old and is running running XP Home SP2, my Dell is running XP Pro SP2.

Is there anything I might be missing here that an expert could advise on please...?

Thanks all...

I took my work laptop home for the first time yesterday. It wouldn't connect to the home wifi, but it does connect to other networks including work and McDonald's. It's not the modem, all our other devices work well with the home wifi and I reset the modem just in case. I've changed the proxy settings, which allowed me to connect to networks outside of work but no luck at home. I've allowed all my browsers through the firewall, even tried with the firewall off for a bit. I reset the tcp/in and winsock, didn't work. I have an Atheros AR5007 802 11b/g wifi adapter which is up to date and has been reset.

A:PC does not connect to home wifi (Windows Vista)

Also: When looking at the wireless network connection status, it says 3,000+ bytes sent and none received. I tried the "automatically acquire new IP settings option" and it says there is still a problem & that my modem/router is unavailable. A diagnostic test performed yesterday said there is an antispyware product installed that is not protecting the system but no infections were detected. This antispyware product is the last thing I can think to have caused this.
