Can't access Internet, Wireless icon on toolbar has a red cross trough it.

Q: Can't access Internet, Wireless icon on toolbar has a red cross trough it.

I can't access Internet, the Wireless icon on toolbar has a red cross trough it. The device IS enabled. When I check the device and run Troubleshoot it tells me it is working properly. The computer is new to me, it looks like it has been configured to access
the internet via another computer. I have tried to reset the computer to its default settings vis System Restore but it will only allow me to go back a year and then crashes just over halfway through the restore.
The computer is a Gateway Laptop MOD 7320GZ + Windows XP Prof Version 2002 Service Pack 2 + Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter
Any advice? As you can guess I'm a novice.

Preferred Solution: Can't access Internet, Wireless icon on toolbar has a red cross trough it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,

Any help would be appreciated.

Since I installed a fresh copy of Windows XP my wireless internet icon that allows me to search for wireless internets an d shows me the strength of them has disappeared from my toolbar on my desktop. How do I get it back?

I tried looking for help online and someone suggested looking in my Device Manager and I have looked at my Device Manager and there are yellow question marks under the "other device" bit I don't know what that means or how to rectify it?

Help!

If not, visit your PC maker's web site to download the driver and your wireless icon should re-appear.

Internet speed on my PC is slow. All other devices connected trough wireless have great internet speed. This started 2 days ago. Now videos on YouTube are loading very very slowly (It takes so much time that I even cant watch video). I called my ISP (or what ever is that called) provider and they said that all is right with my connection and that I should have fine internet speed. So what is the problem and how do I fix it?

Hi shah-aijaz, Sorry to hear that you are having issues with the wifi on your notebook. I have done some research and I have found that the computer that you have listed does NOT have Windows 7. Are you certain that you are giving the proper model number of your computer?  Please check the bottom of your computer and the product number should be listed on a white sticker by a bar code.

Please write back at your convenience.

Thank you.

Hello. Since yesterday I have seen two red x's on my toolbar. One is on the audio output. When I hover over it, it says No Audio Output Device Is Installed. Also, there is a red x over the Internet connection icon. But instead of the normal Internet connection icon, there is what looks to be a cable. When I click on it, I get a small window that says Network settings, with only Airplane Mode available as an option. No wireless internet. What should I do?

Hello everyone,

i've got a problem. I don't get any internet through my router (wired) anymore, but I do get internet with my modem. I didnt change anything, it just happened. Normally there is a cable between the router and the modem, but now I have the internet directly trough my modem. The leds on the modem and the router burn and if I try using the router it tries to connect. Ive tried replacing the cable between the router and the modem, but that didnt change anything. The green led on the router keeps blinking, I dont know if thats normal.

- I've tried resetting (hard resetting) the router and modem.
- I've tried putting the computername (like CC******-A) that ive got from my provider and putting that in the Host-name from the router

If I typ the default IP address in my webbrowser, its says not connected and everything is 0.0.0.0

My modem: Motorola SB5100E
My router: Belkin F5D5231-4

Anyone knows what to do.

Hey,

I don't know if this is already on this site but I have a question, I'll explain. I want to hook up internet to my laptop wirelessly. The parts I need from my ISP are too expensive, so a computer tech guy suggested since I have internet on my desktop so why not hook up a router too the desktop and then share my internet connection on the desktop with my laptop. So I did all that, both my desktop and laptop can see the router after hooking them up. I have file sharing on, I can access folders from either computer to computer. But I don't have internet. In internet connections, on my laptop, on the wireless connection icon I have packets receiving and sending, but on my wireless card connection icon I have zero sent, zero received.

I hope this is clear enough, Do any of you know what I need to do?

I have a belklin router,
both computers are dell
ethernet cable connected to router from desktop computer.

Thanks for reading, I hope you can help.

A:Internet Trough LAN to Router

Probably can help, but need to start with questions.

Have you enabled Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the desktop yet?

How do you have the router connected (WAN or LAN) to the desktop? How do you have the router configured?

And, most importantly, why aren't you just connecting the router to the modem? Does the modem have USB connection only? Or is it a modem/router combo?

However, the network status icon has a red cross on it as if i am not connected. Even more strange is if i hover over the icon its read "Network Internet access"

I don't use any third party connection software and don't have any third party firewalls running.

I am plugged in direct to the router with an ethernet cable.

This isn't a massive problem but i'd prefer the icon not to have the red cross on it.

Normally, in the system tray there's the icon displaying my signal strength for my wireless network connection. This icon disappeared. I checked with the properties of the taskbar and changed it to "show all" for the wireless connection. Also, I used to be able to go through start and "connect to" and there would be an option for wireless networks, where I would go to choose a network if the icon weren't showing. But now I have neither. I have been having problems with viruses such as svhost.exe and another that disallows me from editing my registry because "administrator has disabled editing the registry" but i am the administrator, and I know that I didn't do that. I believe I fixed that problem, not quite sure, i ran a registry cleaner though, and it seems to have worked. Anyways, I just want my wireless networks list back and I can't figure it out. Is it a bug or virus or something? Please help. Sorry for the long message, just trying to get it all out there on the table for you. Thanks for your time.

A:Can't Access Wireless Network List/Icon

You may have to re-setup the wireless network connection. Sometimes cleaning up problems caused by viruses can mess up other stuff.

Once the network settings are back your network connections should reappear as you come within range. You will have to re-enter the passwords for any secure networks you use.

Dear all,

I am in dire need of help to fix my laptop sound card. My laptop (TOSHIBA M600 on windows vista basic as its original operating system) has been working perfectly for the last 3 yrs. Just about 3 weeks ago the the volume icon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen had a red cross marked on it. I am no longer able to listen to online lectures, music, videos etc. I opened the device manager and found no such things as Sound, video and game controllers. This happened after one of my friend installed a faked windows 7. Since then i decided to buy and re-installed a legal window 7 professional, but the problem persists. The volume icon at the bottom of the screen still has a red cross on it.

Some kind people out there please help me...i am a student and cannot afford it to be fixed by those expensive computer genius in the computer store. Also....please use simple lay people english when you give instructions or help.

Thank you so much in advance
Noelu

A:Portege M600 - Volume icon has a red cross on it

Hi buddy,

Usually such a red cross means that there is a no sound driver installed or driver is muddled up? Have you already tried to reinstall the sound driver?

What sound card you have installed?
Normally you can get all drivers on official Toshiba website but for an older model like yours I could imagine that you must check other pages. For example if you have a Realtek sound card, check the Realtek page directly: www.realtek.com

Help!! I have a new (ish) laptop and everything has been fine until a couple of days ago when a red cross appeared on the speaker icon.  I've run the diagnostic tool by clicking on the icon but only my Bose wireless headphones appear in the list, and the tool is unable to resolve the probem with the speakers.  When I use the Bose wireless headphones, the red cross goes and the headphones work fine.  I've tried the Device Manager too to clear the red cross issue, but cannot find a way for it to help resolve the problem. The laptop doesn't have any sound from the speakers, nothing.  If I plug normal/ regular headphones into the jack, then the Bang & Olufsen message appears on the screen to notify that the headphones have been connected, but there is no sound from the headphones and the cross remains on the speaker icon. If I hover over the red cross then a message appears "no speakers or headphones are plugged in"

Ive been using W7 since the early builds and am on HP 32bit these days.
In the past if i lost internet connection i would get a red cross on the network icon. This would go away once connection was restored.
This past week or so this cross keeps appearing. Thing is the connection is fine, no problens what so ever.

Anyone else experienced this. Please no "Clean install" replies, thats way to drastic.

Thanks for any help.

A:Nework icon has a red cross on it but connection is fine

It sounds as though it could be a driver issue. On the odd occasion when I lose connectivity, it's only to the Internet so my icon just shows a yellow triangle with the exclamation mark superimposed on it. Fortunately, my router automatically reconnects if this happens, so I'm not down for more than about a minute.

As your board is based on the NVidia nForce 570 SLI MCP, you could try to see if these drivers might help (make sure that you create a restore point prior to installing) NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.53 WHQL

Hello @George73,  Before we go to the software part of this red x volume icon we will first have to check if your hardware is operating in the necessary parameters. Move the mouse pointer over the lower right side of the screen for the ?Charms? bar to open.Left click or tap on the ?Settings? feature you have in the charms bar. In the search box you are presented in the ?Settings? feature you need to write ?Device Manager?. After the search is finished you will need to left click or tap on the ?Device Manager? icon. If you are prompted by a window you will need to type in the administrator account and password to go further with the steps below. Double click (left click) on the ?Sound, video and game controllers? feature in the device manager window. In the expanded menu in the ?Sound, video and game controllers? feature look to see if you have there a sound card and if it is properly installed. Note: if it is not properly installed you will see a yellow sign next to it or you won?t have a sound card present in that menu. If you have a yellow sign next to the sound card you will need to left click on that icon. Left click on the ?Properties? feature after you clicked on the sound card. Left click or tap on the ?General? tab you have in the properties window. You will have a box under the ?Device status? feature and you will see in that box what exactly the issue with... A:why does the icon of my computer (drive c) is changing to a red cross symbol?

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

A few days ago i bought this router Sweex LW310v2 and when i connect it to the internet, i found that some sites i can open and some sites i can't open. For example, i can open google.com, youtube.com but i can't open facebook.com, twitter.com... My connection to the internet is trough PPoE and when i am connected directly to the internet i don't have this problem, the problem appears only when i am connected to internet trough the router. Moreover, programs like Yahoo Messenger and Skype can connect to internet trough the router, the problem is only with the sites. These two sites i use are just an example, most of the sites i can't open.

What can be the reason for this?

Thanks!

A:Solved: Problem when connected to internet trough router Sweex LW310

Please confirm that you properly configured the WAN (Internet) section of the router for your PPPoE connection and that you do not specify PPPoE on your computer when connecting it to the router.

Hello,

I am having some problems with my computer (Windows XP SP2 or 3, not sure). I think there is something in it that is causing some problems, but my Norton 360 antivirus doesn't seem to be detecting it.

I do not have a restore CD and I cannot log on to the internet to download different / new Spyware removal or anti-virus software.

The problem right now solely consists of the following:

Upon startup, my wireless icon does not appear on the bottom right-hand tray any longer.

If I were to go to Start > Connect To > the Start freezes and stays frozen as does the entire bottom part of my computer ... therefore I can't minimize or I won't see anything.

All my other folders work fine. If I startup and do not try 'Connect To' everything appears to work normally. As soon as I try to do anything that has to do with my wireless connection (e.g. Network setup, Wireless wizard, etc), the specific wireless application freezes.

If I try to restore to a previous date -- chooses the bold date - it initially reads that it is recovering files and restoring, but upon rebooting, an error message tells me that restoring was unsuccessful.

Anybody know what's happening? Please help!

Thanks!

A:Virus? Can't access wireless. Icon doesn't appear; Start freezes

**UPDATE**

I re-install various wireless drives through my Acer computer.
Now I have wireless internet conenction through Atheros... but I still cannot use any of my previous wireless functions.

When I go to Start > Connect to > the thing still freezes up. If I search for network connections -- frozen.

Is this just corruption of the file or a worm / malware?

I'm in the process of downloading some anti-virus software (I already have Norton 360 -- but it's not picking anything up).

Thanks.

Hi, my computer is a huge pile of malfunction. It's a Microsoft Windows XP SP2 Media Center Edition [HP Pavilion Intel Pentium D]
When I try to open internet options in the 'tools' section, a box flashes, then disappears. Also, my yahoo toolbar isn't showing, even though it's checked off when I right click on where the toolbar's supposed to be. I unselected and reselected it - it's still gone.
Also, I installed IE-Spyad & I've removed all of the files. In Section 2 - Installation of IE-Spyad, when I click on Import/Export Sites > Import from File > Up one level button, there's only an empty ZonedOut folder.
I opened it & explored it, nothing in there. Sorry for all the problems lol
Anyways, I've followed every step you guys said to do
Enclosed is my Decker main log, attached is my Decker extra log, then my Panda Activescan results. Pleease help me!

I have a new quick launch icon on the taskbar. It is a red circle with a white cross. There are also pop-up dialog boxes associated with this new icon. Then, I restarted and the red circle/white cross icon was still there. Next, I performed a Trend Micro HijackThis-v2.0.2, and saved the log file. Hello,

My Dell-VOSTRO laptop is kinda in a weird situation now with spyware, and hopefully someone can help me fix this. It's been bugging me for the past 3 days. The problem is on desktop bottom right corner, where the volume icon and msn icon are, there is always a round red icon with white cross pops up something like this:

"Your computer is infected!

Windows has detected spyware infection!

It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to pervent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you.

Click here to protect your comupter from spyware!"

I know this is a spyare spam try to trick you to install their program and not a real windows warning, so I haven't clicked it yet. but I just can't get rid of it. I've tried quite a few things, but nothing works.

There is also a weird thing is that I can't run HijackThis on this laptop, I even renamed it to "Fumble" as someone previous suggested, but it still won't work. Once you double click on the icon, nothing happens. Therefore, I don't really have a HJT log to post. I did follow the steps to run a Panda virus scan and attached the log. Hope it helps in some degrees.

Someone, please help me on this to get rid of that red round icon with the white cross spyware or let me know what need to be disabled to get HiJackThis running to produce a log for you guys.

Thanks a lot in advance!

A:Trojan/Spyware infected! [Red icon with white cross appear on task bar] Please help!

Just want to give an update, I think the trojan or spyware not only disabled HijackThis to run, it does the same thing for other anti-virus software as well. Kaspersky and Windows Defender neither will start now on my laptop. I tried safe mode too, no luck! I guess online scan is the only way to scan it, which I attached the log in the first post, Please help......guys!

Thanks ahead!!!

Just means you don`t have a full signal, it comes and goes, things get in the way, walls etc.

Make sure the path to the router is as clear as possible.

Windows 7 32-bit won't play sound.

Device Manager\Sound, video and game controllers\High Definition Audio Device ok.
Double click and window says:
High Definition Audio Device Properties\General: Device status says This device is working properly.

Speakers are plugged in and make a crackle when plugging in to correct holes.

Mystery?

A:Sound/Mixer icon has red cross. No Audio Output Device is installed.

If it's shown as "working properly" in the Device Manager, the speaker icon you have can also be because the sound is muted.

You show "High Definition Audio Device" rather than the actual sound device which suggests you have the generic Windows/Microsoft installed sound driver rather than the actual sound driver from the motherboard vendor. In many cases the generic Windows driver does not work or work correctly.

You can try and uninstall/reinstall by RIGHT clicking on the entry for the sound and then LEFT click "Uninstall" (DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers) then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of flakey problems.

If the uninstall/reinstall does not fix it, the next step is to get the correct sound drivers and install them.

My laptop used to get internet over wireless, but it doesn't anymore. There are three other computers (XP & Vista) in my house getting internet from the wireless fine (modem-router combo), but my laptop (Vaio with XP) only gets internet through a hard line to the router. The wireless icon shows a good connection to the router, but webpages stall out and "cannot load". My Windows and security software are up to date. I tried installing Vaio updates to no avail. I also tried installing the Winsock Fix that was suggested in another thread. Does anyone have any ideas for what else to try? Thanks!

Hi all,

I'm new to this site and haven't seen a thread that answers my question but i apologise if i have missed it!

I use O2 broadband on the Huawei HB4F1 to connect to the internet on a dell desktop running windows XP, but about a week ago i went to connect and it stopped, i went to internet connections and the wireless icon had disappeared and cant seem to get it back.

in device manager, under network adaptors there is only intel (r) 82562V-2 10/100 network connection, i am missing something from here?

Also i updated to service pack 3 and read the issues with that, tried numerous suggestion on that front but to no avail. after this i tried to uninstall sp3 but when i went into remove programs there is no remove tab so i am now thinking it didnt install properly.

As you can probably guess i am not hugely computer savvy and could really do with some easy fix steps, if any of this makes sense to you?
Thanks!
