How to get a SideWinder Precision 2 working on XP.

Q: How to get a SideWinder Precision 2 working on XP.

I keep hearing plug and play would work with this joystick, but... it doesn't seem to be working for me.

I read that Microsoft doesn't support this joystick for XP, but the P&P would work.

I can't seem to have any luck getting it going, and I'd much rather not have to buy another one.

Thanks for any help on the problem.

Preferred Solution: How to get a SideWinder Precision 2 working on XP.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have just bought a new computer that only has USB inputs, and not the inputs that the old joysticks take... I've bought an adapter so that I can connect my Sidewinder Precision Pro to the USB port, but it doesn't detect it correctly... When I go the my "game controllers" window in control panel, and search for it, it finde Sidewinder 3d pro and it says it isn't connected... what can I do? Can I install my soundcard from my old computer (it has the correct input for the joystick) and just use that to connect my joystick to the computer?

Thank you

I just bought a precision 2 joystick and it installed painlessly and seems to be working like a charm...until I try to use it in a game! It is detected and on the right ID (#1) but when I get into my games (Mechwarrior 2 & 3) the buttons aren't seen by the configuration tools. I can map them fine in Mechwarrior 2, but Mechwarrior 3's mapping tool doesn't see them at all. During gameplay it will use a default in both games and seems to drop a few of the buttons (even the trigger!). I am using DX 8.0 with 144MB RAM. Any ideas?

From the Sidewinder website....

Mechwarrior 4 is supported but it doesnt look like 2 or 3 is.

Not that I'm aware of. Some say it won't work in XP and others say it may. When it's pluged in do you see it listed as a device in Gaming Controllers..advanced tab?? My understanding is that XP has default drivers if the sidewinder precision pro is used via the USB port...not a game port.

Got a problem with my Sidewinder Precicion 2 Joystick. I installed Microsoft Sidewinder game devices 4.0 software. When i plug the joystick into the USB ,My PC finds it and adds it to CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>DEVICE MANAGER> under the sound video and game controllers. when i click on the CONTROL PANEL>GAME DEVICES however, it isnt listed as being even present on my system. I cant add the device because it isnt listed to add and when i try to add it as a 4 button 3 axis joystick (for example) it just comes up as being not connected. Strange thing is, I have Falcon 4.0 which actually recognises that it is there and enables me to use it, But any game (e.g Flight Sim 2002) which looks in GAME DEVICES to see what joystick you have, Doesnt find it and therefore i cant use it. Does anyone have any idea how to get this to register in game devices so i can use it. Both my USB ports are working correctly, everything is installed correctly and there are no system conflicts. I am close to setting fire to my pc and sending hate mail to Dollar Bill Gates here!!!
Any help much appreciated.

Hello all,
In order to make my gaming experience that much funner (and easier) I have used the macro creation on my SideWinder Precision 2. This was fairly easy to find in SideWinder Central 3.02 -- which ran on my old OS (Windows 2000). Unfortunately, now that I have upgraded to Windows XP Pro, SideWinder Central 3.02 does not support XP, and I can't get it to install.
The first thing I tried was to find and install a copy of SideWinder Central 4.0 -- which works, and recognizes my Precision 2, but will not let me create macros and game profiles.
This is all very frustrating and I would appreciate any help you can give me.

In summary:
Old System: Windows 2000, SideWinder Central 3.02 (completely functional)
New System: Windows XP Pro, SideWinder Central 4.0 (minimally functional)

A:SideWinder Precision 2 macro incompatability

You guy could try to install 3.02 version on XP, and then run it in compatibility mode with windows 2000.

Don't know if this would work, but might be worth a shot.

I just want to throw this out here because I had issues with finding drivers and software for the SideWinder Racing Wheel. It also took me some time to find any info about its compatibility with Windows 7 and all I found was some articles claiming that it was compatible and some that said the exact opposite.
Thanks to how hard it is to find any details about the set I have decided to compile a list of all the games that actually supports it. The wheel is compatible with Windows 7 (x64) but the issues is in the games not recognizing it. So far I haven't got to test that many games..in fact I have only tested one game properly and confirmed that it works but I'll get busy over the weekends.
It's worth mentioning that Windows 7 installed some default drivers but I had to install the software to actually be able to use the wheel in-game...even tho the software itself isn't usable and it's made for Win98. I can share the setup files too, just send me a message and we will figure out how to do it (mail, dropbox or some other way).

I have listed some of the games that I have got on some drm and as hard copy's (CD/DVD) but if you want me to test more games then please comment below or throw me a line on Steam.

The list can be found here (scroll down).

Hi Guys,

I was going to go out and buy one of these joysticks the other day, when an acquaintance gave me one instead. They are, however, unsure whether or not they can find the software CD for this.

I have exhausted my search abilities, but can find nowhere on the net with a version of this software that has the Precision 2 in it. The best I have been able to find is version 3.2.

Any assistance in locating this software would be thankfully accepted, as it would be a shame to have to go out and but one of these things just for the software.

Dear sirs,

the device that I was installing, but it did not, niether does Windows 8 (the current software that I am using) recognize the joystick when I plug it in through USB. Can you give me the steps on how to successfully get both Windows Vista, and Windows 8 to

Well I just finished out typing a long post for this and accidentally hit the back button on my mouse...

So I bought a Microsoft Sidewinder x4 keyboard today and about 2-3 hours ago I noticed that the volume buttons on it didn't work. Every other key on the keyboard works and Ive seen a lot of other people with the same problem and I tried the variety of solutions given to them and none of them worked.

I tried uninstalling the driver (not entirely sure if it uninstalled) but I couldn't find any way to uninstall Intellitype (the keyboard software), it wasn't in the list of installed programs. I tried doing a 'clean boot' and that didn't help at all. And as always the microsoft troubleshooter program didn't do anything.

This is very frustrating for me because I do use these buttons very often and all help is grately appreciated.

Btw I'm using Windows 7 and I do have the latest drivers installed as far as I know.

...don't call Microsoft support without your receipt.

Unless you still have your receipt, you'll either have to settle for getting a much inferior mouse replacement (Sidewinder X3) or nothing at all.

Despite whatever the warranty and refund departments tell you (and you will have to call both), it will eventually loop back to the warranty department, which will tell you, despite earlier assurances that you'll be able to get a market-value refund without a receipt, that you'll need provide your receipt to get any kind of refund.

Otherwise, enjoy your brick of a mouse and Sidewinder X3 replacement.

Hi, I'm new to the forum, so I hope I posted in the correct place. My product: HP Pavilion Notebook - 15-ab045sa (ENERGY STAR) I have all the usual touchpad gestures working (three finger swipe etc).  However, the recent AU introduced a new gesture to switch virtual desktops. I was really looking forward for this update but this gesture doesn't work! I tried reinstalling the AU update with erasing everything and it still doesn't work! I don't get why it doesn't work as I have a precision touchpad and all the other gestures work except for this new one! Also even though the some gestures work (eg three finger flick), I dont think Win 10 recognises the precision touchpad as under Mouse & Trackpad settings it doesn't say that I have a precision touchpad and so doesn't give me options to alter what the gestures do, like it should. I have the  Synaptics SMBus TouchPad driver (21/07/2016). Would really appreciate your help as I was really looking forward for the new gesture to switch virtual desktops. Thanks.

Thought I would weigh in with my issues as well. Just got a precision 5100, and a TB15. Having issues with initial connection after waking up from sleep, USB randomly disconnecting as well as display scaling issues. With the display, my icons are gigantic and a lot of things are zoomed in. Checked the properties in Windows and everything shows 100% as it should. Some of my taskbar icons are distorted as well. Additionally, if I use 1 or 2 displays in addition to the laptop display, the laptop display tweaks out and flickers quit frequently. My co-worker and I have the exact same setups and he is experiencing these issues as well. Really disappointed in Dell with this. Oh, all drivers and BIOS updates have been updated to the latest. Cannot figure out where to go from here.

I recently purchased a Dell Precision 490 with hopes of being able to run W7 x64 on it.

After installing it without a hitch, i can't get any USB device to work other than my wireless keyboard and mouse set (made by Acer).

The system will make the USB noises when plugged in / unplugged, but immediately will pop up a message stating "USB device not recognized" and an Unknown Device will show up in the Device Manager. I've tried a Neat Receipt scanner, multiple USB flash drives of varying sizes, and a WD My Studio external USB drive.

Beneath Universal Serial Bus controllers in Device Manager, I see 5x Intel 631xESB/6321ESB/3100 Chipset with Driver by Intel version dated 9.15.2006 I've tried loading numerous different chipset drivers, etc. None have made a difference.

Dell's support site only has drivers for up to Vista x64.

Another detail: I've got the Firewire port on the front of the case working!!

What gives? Any and all advice appreciated.

A:USB not working on Dell Precision 490 running Windows 7 x64

Generally the Intel motherboard chipset drivers are all that's needed for the USB on the hardware end. The only drivers are the default built in Windows drivers.

Dell lists Vista 32/64 drivers and the Vista drivers are applicable to Windows 7, so you shouldn't have problems getting it working. If you just accessed the Dell downloads based on the Service Tag number that will only show what it was delivered with. My link below will get you the Vista drivers. Windows, when installing, will install many device drivers however with the Dell proprietary hardware (especially on older systems such as this), you really need the Dell drivers. I see what looks like a full complement of drivers on the Dell site for Vista. Maybe a new install is needed. The correct install sequence on a Dell is (1) Install Windows (2) Install the Dell desktop system software - on applicable models (3) Install Intel motherboard chipset drivers (4) Install device drivers including video, sound, Ethernet, etc. I used to do a lot of support on the Dell forums and if this sequence is followed in almost all cases it will result in a good install.

SUBJECT: Touchpad not working. Pointer frozen.
Hello Dell,
This morning I woke up and to my surprise my touchpad has not been working at all. I am currently using a USB mouse, but would still like to know why this has occurred. Up until yesterday, it worked fine. I have had the laptop for almost 1.5 years now, with no problems at all.
Initially when I started the laptop, there was no pointer at all. I had to force shutdown the computer and start again.
When the laptop started up the 2nd time, the pointer was present, but was frozen. So I restarted the computer.
When the laptop started up the 3rd time, the touchpad worked for less than 2 minutes...then froze.
I have gone online looking for a solution, and it seems like nobody has a sure reason as to why this is occurring. The driver is fine and updated...I have checked touchpad settings as well, and everything is on (as in normal settings).
Can someone please help me in figuring out what the problem is?

Thank You

It's getting a little tiring that every new piece of hardware we get has one issue or another.
One of our departments just got in a couple of Precision 7510 laptops as replacements for the M4800 and I was testing the drivers with our SCCM environment. When trying to PXE boot the system it works fine until I get to the point where I have to hit F12 to actually launch the boot.wim then it fails as if I didn't touch the keyboard.
Updated the BIOS to the latest, no difference. Connected a USB keyboard to it and it worked just fine. Has anyone else seen this issue?

Hi Shayashkar,

Have you checked first of all that the wireless switch is enabled on the right hand side? Also go in to the BIOS (F2 on startup) and check that the Wireless Switch is set to "ALL" and the Wireless Device Enable is set to "ALL"
If it is still not turning on, I'd suggest updating the Wireless Driver. Follow this link [View:]
and choose Network and download the latest driver for your WLAN card. If you know the Service Tag enter that and it will list the drivers for your particular configuration. Let me know if the issue is resolved or if you are still having issues.

Is this a driver problem or does my laptop simply do not work with windows 10 anymore, or is it another problem?

I was recently playing a game, the touchpad has been having no issues before this, but during the game, the touchpad randomly stopped working, I restarted my computer and it hasn't worked since. I've attempted to install the Alps multi-touchpad drivers (it isn't meant for M6500, but it is meant for windows 10), but none of my attempts at installing have been successful it seems. Pretty much every time I install it, it says the installation has failed and doesn't give me a reason. I've also attempted to install the synaptics drivers (Is meant for the M6500, isn't meant for windows 10) that initially came on the computer, this successfully installed but didn't succeed in making my touchpad work. I would attempt to auto install the drivers, but when I go to the device manager, my touchpad no longer shows up in any of the options. The computer does, however, work with a mouse, but I'd prefer to have the trackpad working.

Hi DART737,
If the system was working fine earlier, then perform a system restore to restore the machine to an earlier point where it was working fine - http://dell.to/1Sg6khF
Update the BIOS if possible - http://dell.to/2eGY1Q5- restart the system and check in device manager under mouse and pointing devices or check for any unknown devices.
Reset the BIOS defaults and check again - press f2 on startup.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Restart and check in Safe mode - press f8 on startup.
If nothing works, try reseating the touchpad / palmrest cable and check - download the service manual here - http://dell.to/2e8Ofpa
Lastly, your system model is not compatible to work with Win 10 - see this link - http://dell.to/2f3nCj3. Although the system might work with Win10, you might not find drivers available for win 10. The system might not be completely functional or stable, such as it might the issue you have encountered now.

The BIOS/UEFI  settings for Video - Primary Display - are not working.
My machine, shipped by Dell (not from a reseller) few days ago is equipped with the following components:CPU: Xeon E3-1245v6 with Intel HD 630 graphicsGPU: Nvidia Quadro P2000
The BIOS/UEFI firmware allows setting the Primary Display, in case more than one GPU is available. Within the "Video" section, "Primary Display" subsection the following options are available:- Auto- Intel HD Graphics- NVIDIA HD Graphics
Setting the primary graphics to Intel does not have any effect. Nvidia is still being used for graphics output during the boot process.
Am I correct when assuming a BIOS/UEFI fault here?
Edit: To clarify - Intel HD works properly once the Nvidia card is being removed from the system. I've been also replacing the Nvidia card with a much older (PCIe 2.0) AMD Radeon card. Same result here - only the AMD card is being used, in spite of Intel HD being selected as the primary display.

I have search for many hours for answers to questions on new Graphics Cards which require 8pin and 6 pin or 8pin and 8pin power connections aside from the motherboard supplied power and what the appropriate method was to connect the GPU cards to the 8 pin pcie power connections. This is complicated by the fact that the Precisions seem to only have 6pin cables installed with the towers regardless of the power supply that is installed.   Yes. Everyone understands hopefully that if you have, for example, a 450 watt power supply ( forget the efficiency aspect of the actual power supply) as I am interested in the mechanics of the  design.
The power supply connects to a PC board, which appears to be called "Power Supply extended card"
Now, looking at the connectors on this extended card, there is a "POWER_VGA1" 8pin connection on this extended card (bottom left black socket).  To this 8pin connector, on my T5600 and seemingly on all the others that have made similar inquiries, we all have a 8pin male connector that fit into the extended card. My 8pin connector has two sets of wires leaving the connector and becoming two 6 pin connectors, one of which 6pin connectors is plugged into my stock Quadro 5000 video card.
OK. So, now most people are wanting to change out the 6pin Quadro card with either an 8pin or 8 pin plus 6pin or 8pin and 8pin graphics card such as a GTX 980TI or GTX 1080 or GTX 1070 or AMDs similar card.

Ok heres the problem, I own a Compaq 6029us computer with a compaq mobo, built in sound/video/usb etc. I have a MS sidewinder dual strike(about a year old) and am running on Windows Home XP(compaq version). My last computer was built by me and I had no problems plugging in the joystick to the USB and Windows XP PRO would autodetect it. In fact It still works with my other system.
When I plug in the joystick on this computer I get nothing. When I go to add to my Game Controllers it says "Your gameport or gameport drivers are not properly configured. Please see the Device Manager."
So in the device manager there is no gameport under sound, video, game controllers tab. I tried manually installing a gameport(standard, Ess, Neomagic etc.) and none of them work. I looked on MS for some drivers but MS claims that they are all built into windows. I tried looking for gameport drivers from Compaq(waste of time), I called compaq and asked them about this problem. They couldn't tell me how to install a gameport(though they said I should have one) and they told me it was a problem with the joystick and I would have to contact MS for help, which is not true because the joystick works fine on my other computer. I know its because there is no gameport/driver. But they couldn't get one to work and couldn't explain why . So that was a waste of time.
Now Im using a Compaq Mobo with built-in Sound, Soundmax and in the past the gameport was always connected to the soundca... Read more

I also have a Microsoft Sidewinder, but it is on a Gateway( old beastie) on windows 98. When I first installed it, I had a problem with it not being detected( after first installing the driver) . Finally, tried the second port( I am stubborn) and viola, it found it.

Maybe it will "see" it on the other port?

After a few weeks of installing, tweaking, tuning, troubleshooting, etc. my win 7 pro install...

I realize the MS does not support my SideWinder Force Feedback 2 Game Controller in win7.

How can this possibly be? Made by MS, and an MS os. Go to the ms win7 hardware compatablilty page and it says something about information coming soon.

Vista required no drivers, or at least no download was needed. The device was just recognized..

I can't believe it..

A:Say It's not so.. (Sidewinder)

Hmmm.... I just plugged mine in and Win 7 (x64) installed the drivers and it appears to be in working order, though I've yet to try it with a game - Freespace for example.

Also, what game are you playing that needs that stick, because the game will probably be the issue. So....

PS, It worked the same way in Vista as Win 7, so...???

I have a new computer with Win98SE installed.
I downloaded and installed the updated driver from Microsoft(v3.02) for my Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro. Upon attempting to configure the Sidewinder the "game controller" continues to inform me that the device is not connected, even though it is connected.

Please advise as to what I am missing or what I need to do to convince the game controller that the device is indeed connected, etc.

AT this time the controller ID assignment is #1, however even if I change it the computer still does not recognize that the device is connected.

Thank you.

is there any way to get my MS Sidewinder Precision Pro to work on Win XP Pro? My soundcard and gamecontrollers work fine, but when trying to install the joystick in control panel, it says that my joystick isn't connected. I have it connected with a USB adapter because my computer doesn't have the original input. What can I do?

You may be out of luck with this one. My Microsoft Sidewinder Steering wheel worked with Windows 98 but not with Windows XP. Microsoft also provided a statement that they would not support the device in Windows XP. Yours may be in the same class. I got the wheel to work once after numerous install attempts but when I shut down the computer that was it. It was not being recognized at all. I eventually gave it away. Never found out why Microsoft refused to support its own hardware.

I tried to install the newly released Dell Precision Optimizer v3.5.5 (A00) August 18, 2016 on my Precision 5510, running Windows 7 64bit.
During the installation, an error panel pops up with this text:

I use the above joystick on the MS flight SimX. It seems to have no effect on trim. That is, the buttons allocated for trim seem to have no effect. Is that Pro2 problem, or the fltSimX problem?

I'm trying to connect my MS Sidewinder Freestyle Pro to a USB port (it doesn't work on the joystick port).

In Device Manager it is listed under Human Interface Devices with a black exclamation mark on yellow triangle, and when I double-click it it says it couldn't load the device driver (code 2).

So when I click 'Update Driver' it finds one, and when I tell it to go ahead it prompts me to insert "Windows 98 Second Edition CD-Rom". (I don't have this, should I have got it supplied with my PC?)

Anyway, I tell it to skip file, and the 3 files it needs but can't find are:

(By the way, when I connected it to the normal joystick port it didn't even list it in device manager - it's as though it didn't realise it was plugged in, which is why I'm using the USB port.)

I have installed DirectX 7.0a but that didn't help, and my sound card is by C-Media (CM18738/C3DX PCI Audio Device) who I can't find on the net for updates. I use Win 98.

Sorry to have gone on for so long but I thought I should put as much info as possible.

Any help would be much appreciated.

This may be why it doesn't work on your soundcard. http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ARTICLES/Q193/3/43.asp
As for the USB, you do need those files and they will be located on the CDRom. If you don't have the cdrom then you chould have the cab files on your hard drive and should be able to point the driver update to those files when it needs them. Find out where your cab files are by going to start then find files and folders, Search for *.cab it should find quite a few files. The ones you want will be called win98_##.cab where the ## will be a specific number. There should be quite a few all in the same location with consecutive numbers. Run the driver update again and when it needs those files point it to the directory where the cab files are at. The cab files should be on your computer if you don't have the win98 cd.
Then check out this page http://support.microsoft.com/support/Hardware/FreeStylePro/faq/default.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0
