I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello....I have just had lots of problems with malware and after joining this website everything has been removed. However, since all of the problems i cannot start Windows Defender.

Error message: Windows defender encountered an error: 0x800106ba. A problem caused this programs service to stop. To start the service, restart the computer or search help and support for how to start manually.

I have tried lots of different things, restarting, disabling it, setting it to automatic, but each time it does not start and gives me the error message.

Is there any way to fix it? As i have read that it cant be uninstalled. For the time being i have disabled the program and also disabled it from start up. I would be so grateful if someone could shed some light?

Cheers in advance!

A:Solved: Windows Defender does not open - Error message

I would say just go without and use other Antispyware programs, or change your antivirus from AVG to MSE which completely encompasses Windows Defender.

A:Windows Defender Error Message- HiJack Posted

I would try uninstalling Windows Defender, restarting the computer, then reinstalling Windows Defender. Something in the configuration is causing it to fail to load when you start the computer and the reinstall will probably fix it.

The only other thing I can think of from what you posted is that Norton Anti-Virus (or another anti-spyware program) and Windows Defender are fighting with each other.

I do not have any other malware or anti virus installed in my PC before the error occured.
I've tried malwarebyte anti-malware, tdsskiller, adwcleaner, hitman and also malwarebytes anti-rootkit. Tdsskiller and hitman found nothing. adwcleaner and malwarebyte found threats, after removing those and reboot windows defender still couldn't start.
I have tried malwarebyte anti-rookit also, a first scan found nothing, then I reboot and scan it second time but still found nothing.

Hey, hopefully someone here can help me because I'm on the verge of tearing my hair out here.

I seem to have picked up some sort of virus last night, which restarted my PC. Once it booted back up, I couldnt access any .exe files at all, when I try it gives me a loading icon for half a second, before not doing anything at all.

I've tried burning reg fixes onto a CD and have run them on my PC, but they seem to have no effect. I've also tried a system restore to the day before, but get an error message stopping me from doing it and I'm at a bit of a loose end as to what else I can try beyond a new hard drive and a fresh install of windows.

Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I moved this thread to the appropriate forum. If any of the directions tell you to post logs, post them in this thread DO NOT create a new one.

Look over these http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...oval-help.html
If you cannot complete any of the steps for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed, and post your logs in this thread where an Analyst will assist you. However, it is very important to make mention of any of the steps that you were not able to complete.

After you?ve posted your logs, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are very busy.

I am not sure when and what update this occurred during, but the Windows Defender icon now appears in the system tray, under 2 systems:

Windows 8 Core
Windows 8.1 Pro
To make the icon appear, simply launch Windows Defender from the Start Start.

During a system scan.

During an update.

Mouse-over, during update.

There is currently no context menu added by Microsoft, for Windows Defender on Windows 8, 8.1 and 10.

I know for a fact that Windows Defender did not have an icon in the notification tray/taskbar in Windows 8/8.1. I'm talking about the bottom right and if you have/had Win 7 using MSE you would have the icon (green house with checkmark and flag) if enabled.

When Windows Defender did not have the same functionality for its icon people were really up in arms and many threads talked about hacks to get it to appear. Well all of a sudden I noticed that it was available and if I select "Show icon and notifications" under customize it appears. If I hover over it it shows "PC Status: Protected" just like MSE.

Does anyone else see this? When did it happen? I would have thought I would see some mention of it somewhere since it was a feature (lacking) that really bothered people.

edit: There is even a tutorial here on how to add it. And it says "Windows Defender does not have a icon in the notification area, but it does run in the background by default and will give you a notification if it detects anything."

Windows Defender - Create Shortcut in Windows 8

I'm pretty sure it is not showing because it detected something. Like I said its showing just like the MSE icon.

I apologise for my first thread, I'm new at this kind of communication, I hope this is better.

I may have stumbled on to the solution as my Defender is not showing the virus at this time. I went through the whole process several times today. First ran the Defender program quickly and it showed the virus. Then I cleared all and rebooted. Went into Defender and excluded the D:\directory. Ran it again and Defender did not show the virus. In reading about Defender there is a problem with the code and the code in D:\ directory where the program for repairing Windows 10 is stored on my HP Laptop. I then removed the block on D:\

I then ran the virus programs Malwarebytes Adw Cleaner, then Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then HitmanPro, then Zemana AntiMalware. All showed a clean machine!! I did this several times just to make sure.

I then rebooted then made sure there was no block on D:\ in Defender and then ran Defender at high speed and no virus!! Repeated and again no virus!!

Each time I ran Defender I uploaded, so I hope Microsoff updated the program.

It sounds like the file association for .EXE has been removed...

Save the attached file to the desktop
Right click it and select "rename"
Rename it to: exefile.reg (instead of: exefile.reg.txt)
Then double click it to merge with the registry.

A reboot might be required for changes to take effect.
Hopefully, file extensions aren't hidden, and if they are, you can get into Folder Options > View tab to uncheck "hide extensions for known file types". I'm also hoping that .reg file association isn't also messed up, and that the default action is still "merge".
If you can now open EXE files, please post a HijackThis log.
EDIT: Hmm, it also sounds like .cpl (control panel extension) association is messed up as well.

Two days ago my laptop unexpectedly shut off. Ever since then i get the windows error recovery message whenever i start up windows. I choose to start windows normally instead of going into safe mode. Once my desktop loads, i try clicking on programs that keep on failing to load. After 10 or more minutes i finally get them open. The screen also blacks out and comes back. The network icon sometimes shows that the computer is connected to the ethernet code when its not and it also shows that the internet is not connected or on when it is. The programs also become unresponsive alot , causing me to restart. What should i do ? Ive been experiencing this problem for 2 days.

A:Windows error recovery message & programs take too long to open?

Welcome to the forums,

Why did the computer shut off unexpectedly, did the power in your house go out? was the computer running MS updates at the time of a power failure or any other updates for any programs you have installed on the computer?

When the power goes out unexpectedly it can cause corrutions of the files, next time you get the error recovery message choose repair the computer, this choice will automatically try to fix errors. After choosing repair the computer, the computer might ask a couple of things; if the option comes up please choose to fix errors that are found and to recover bad sectors on the disk.

Goodday everyone,
I was just using the internet like usual when I tried to download an app that looked intresting. Unfortunately it was a PUP bomb and what not but it was too late. It has already infected my device. I ran malwarebytes antimalware immediately followed by adware cleaner. Both programs showed several detections. I also manually used the task manager to identify any suspicious looking application running on my system. After several detections and system clean up, I had to restart my pc several times to complete those.
And finally after I thought everything had been removed , I followed the instructions on the malwarebytes official website on how to clean my browser and remove hidden shortcuts. Sometime later malwarebytes started telling that it is blocking malicious websites.
I looked online and downloaded GMER unfortunately it always shows  ( windows32 config system, the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another program ) , if I pressed OK and started a scan GMER eventually crashes.
Updated >
I just ran MalwareBytes Antirootkit; it flashed a warning sign saying a probable rootkit activity detected registry value Applnit_Dll. Since I am not sure I pressed no, updated the database and started the scan. It gave a negative result; as in no rootkit present. Nevertheless GMER crashed again.
Thanks a lot in advance for any suggestions or tips.
Best Regards.

I've seen this error due to bad installations of software and due to malware.

Please try putting a CD/DVD into the drive. It may take several tries, but the system is looking for a certain file on a certain device. This is most likely a CD/DVD that was pulled out before the program/installation was finished.

Also, try scanning for malware with some of the free tools here: Free Online AntiMalware Resources

My Windows XP laptop boots up to the point of the desktop appearing and the icons being drawn. There are two account names but whichever one is used gets the same result. Just after the desktop icons appear, there is the following message: "Windows Defender. Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support on how to start a service manually."

At this point, the interface freezes. The mouse cursor still moves, but nothing responds to a click. Clicking "OK" on the Defender message or trying to X it out does nothing. Nothing else, including the Start menu for example, responds either. This condition has existed for about two weeks.

The laptop will boot up into Safe mode and into Safe Mode with Networking. However, the strategies I have attempted in this mode have not solved the problem.

First, I used msconfig to go to the Services tab to see if Windows Defender could be unchecked there. But it does not list Windows Defender.

We have an older Pavillion Desktop, p6600 Series, but the issue seems to be with the 2011x LED monitor.  It is connected to the pc with a DVI cable.  However, there is a port for a VGA cable, if I had one.  There is no HDMI port on this monitor.  So the problem... The monitor frequently "glitches"...it shows an error message a few times and then it goes to sleep.  The error message says, "Input Signal Out of Range, Change Settings to 1600x900 - 60Hz".  According to the monitor's user manual, I need to restart my computer in Safe Mode, change the settings accordingly, and then restart the computer for the settings to take effect.  The problem is I can't get a picture on the monitor of any kind...just the error message and then nothing...so I can't even get into Safe Mode to make the changes in the first place. I am confident that this monitor is in good working order and that it would be fine if I could make the changes.  But how to make the changes without having to buy another monitor is the question. Would it make a difference if I bought a VGA cable and connected it with that?  I am not all that tech savy so I don't know if that's a valid option or not. Suggestions? Thanks!

More than likely its a driver issue. What make and model of graphics card is it?

Also, lets view if the driver did not install correctly. Right click on the My Computer icon and select Properties. Click the tab that says Hardware than the button that says Device Manager. See if anything in this list has an icon next to it which looks like a yellow triangle with an ! in it.

Hi I'm new to these forums and recently a family member has brought me an IBM laptop that refuses to boot up. When I press the power button the message "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Selecrt 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

If you could help it would be greatly appreciated.

A:Ibm Laptop Refuses To Start. Shows Error Message About A Corrupt File.

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Selecrt 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

Thats what you have to do.

You have to be brave, shove in the disk, press the r for repair (not the R for recovery console) You will need you XP key and it will install XP again, replacing the files that are damaged.

I have Microsoft Security Essentials, which disabled Windows Defender. I am happy with that. But every time I boot, I get a message that says Windows Defender has been turned off, and I have to click something. How can I kill that message?

A:Windows defender boot message

Type services.msc in the start search box. Click on the icon to bring up the services window. Scroll down to Windows Defender, right click, choose properties, set it to 'disabled' and stop the service.

Reboot and see if you get the message again.

Just suddenly got a pop-up from Windows Defender that warned to "Review Changes to Computer Settings" - don't recall making any!

Then it gives this VERY LONG list of website addresses. Must be 100 of them!

It asks me to Select an Action to apply, either Permit or Deny and that if Permitted, it CANNOT undo it. Yikes!

It gives details of:
Publisher: Not available
Agent: System Configuration
CheckPoint: Hosts file
and to Select an Action to Permit or Deny.

Then it lists all the Websites.....tons of them. And says:
file (changed) @S-1-5-21-340.....and a bunch more numbers, and then C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Anyone? Know what this is...what's going on....what to do??
I still have the Defender page up, as it needs me to take an Action to either Permit or Deny, and have no idea what's going on or what to do.

Ran AVG, nothing found. Ran Spybot, nothing found.

Help greatly appreciated!

A:Help! Windows Defender warning message

Spybot, if you just recently ran it and asked it to immunise your system, will have generated a HOSTS file with hundreds of addresses.
The general idea is to block those addresses, and the HOSTS file serves to route any requests to those addresses back to a null address.

Hi I am having the problem of Windows defender not opening. In the action center it says it is on. What I'm having issues with is clicking on the defender icon and nothing happening. It just won't open. I want to run a full scan, but I get nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Defender won't open in windows 8

What happens if you try to open it from the Control Panel?
Does it say 'This app has been turned off and isn't monitoring your computer'?

Also, in the control panel again, check the 'Action Center' to see if there are any messages for antivirus options for Windows Defender.

You didn't give any insights into your system but if you've a newer one, (Windows XP and higher) then try Autoruns http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx hope this helps

I have recently had a problem with my computer where I had to reset IE browser because I couldn't connect to the proxy server. I got that done and now when I try and download FireFox I get the message that the file contains a virus and was deleted. I looked online and many ppl think that I can turn off windows defender and then be able to download. When I open Start menu and search for windows defender I get a file I cannot open. I have also tried going through the control panel with the same results. I have recently purchased and installed RegCure Pro for my computers and ran the scan which fixed 1009 problems with this computer. Any help with getting windows to let me download files would be greatly appreciated.
I have attached a screen shot of my control panel where it shows windows defender but the normal wall icon is not there.

A:Cannot open windows defender!!

1) Registry cleaners and fixers cause problem, they don't cure them.
2) It sounds as though you've had several problems with your system. Since you've now used a registry cleaner, it's difficult if not impossible to offer intelligent assistance. However, I can tell you how to disable Windows Defender (which is a complete waste of resources anyway). Go to start - run and type: services.msc (then press ENTER). Find the Windows Defender service and disable it. Reboot.
3) Make certain you have a good anti virus app installed and resident at all times.

I have seen several threads with this same problem. However, I am still stuck on being unable to turn on defender even after following the instructions in previous threads. When I go to the action center and click turn on now, it goes to a list of files with which I have no idea what I am supposed to do. When I go to the control panel, I get the message that "this app has been turned off and is not monitoring your computer". Also, I know that defender can not be turned on when there is another security system running. I previously had a Norton free trial, but I believe I have removed all of the software. In addition, the action center shows that there is nothing protecting the computer. I am sure I am just doing something foolish, but I am completely stuck. Please help!

Your post is somewhat confusing. Does Defender open after the warning or doesn't it?

This is a strange problem I have been having for the last couple of weeks. I've googled it but can't find any one else having this problem. I have looked through the Event logs but everything is normal.

After a restart, locking my computer using Ctrl - Alt - Del or Win - L works normally and the screen saver screen appears, hiding my open windows and background along with the "Computer Locked" window.

But after a few days, each time I lock the PC, only the "Computer Locked" window appears and all my open windows are visible behind it. Then I'll have problems with windows not appearing correctly, I'll have to restart Windows and everything is back to normal for a few days.

Every heard of this? Any ideas? I'm running XP Pro with SP3 and the latest updates, including current graphics drivers.

Thanks in advance,

A:1tb hard drive shows unallocated & shows error cyclic redundancy error

Hello and welcome Kishor now I have gut feeling that drive night have been damaged by the sudden power failure it could have affected the platters themselves or the controller unit.
Now I think you need to test the drive using this SeaTools for Windows | Seagate or a purely physical surface test see this Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition. run it and see my pic on how to set that up. It tests the actual surface of the platters and to some extent the ability of the read / write heads.

But the more fundamental (and worrisome) question: who accessed your system while you were away?
The reason I ask is that it's possible that this person may have made other changes that compromised your security, personal information, etc.
I'm not trying to create fear or paranoia, just mentioning it, in case you want help checking the system...
