computer crashes on game launch

Q: computer crashes on game launch

When I launch certain games from Steam (not sure if it's steam only games or what), games like Counterstrike: GO, Daksiders II, Saints Row The Third, my computer gets a blue screen, and then reboots. The blue screen says something about BIOS. I guess this information would be of use to you:

Processor: AMD FX(tm)-6100 Six-Core Processor
Manufacturer: AMD
Speed: 3.3 GHz
Number of Cores: 6
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chipset: GeForce GTX 560
Dedicated Memory: 2.1 GB
Total Memory: 4.0 GB
Memory: 8.2 GB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 64-bit
Service Pack: 1
Size: 64 Bit
Edition: Home Premium

Just note that I can play games, I can play games like Arma 2, Dota 2, Team Fortress 2, Red Orchestra 2(funny how all of these games end in 2, maybe i can only play games with 2 in them lol) even games not purchased from Steam like World of Warcraft.

I do not know if I need to fix the Motherboard, the videocard, some people say it's the DirectX, i honestly don't know too much about computers and all the technical stuff. Thanks for reading, I could use all the help I can get.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Is this a prebuild, branded PC like a HP, Dell, Acer etc? If so, what is the exact make and model number?

What is the exact make, model and wattage of the PSU?

Have you ever changed or upgraded any hardware since you got the machine?

Is Windows and all your drivers fully patched and up to date?

Could be drivers, PSU, graphics card, RAM or something else at this stage

Hey guys,

Basically, any time I launch a game that uses my graphics card at all, my computer hangs up, and my GPU usage skyrockets. I then get a message that my Nvidia driver crashed and successfully restarted.
At first, I thought it was a Bitminer trojan, but I have run Malwarebytes, HitmanPro, and a few other programs, and none of them have found anything. I am at my wit's end. Please, someone help me.

Thank you,

My computer freezes entirely when I launch a game called CS:GO. I can't even do ctrl+alt+del and alt+f4. The buttons that emit light won't respond like when I press the caps lock button, it wont indicate a light on the right side of the keyboard. Why is this happening? I have a GTX 970 ZOTAC Extreme Edition, and normal temps on cpu and gpu. Help?

Hello,
I have a computer that will sometimes give me the Blue Screen of Death when I try launching a game. Before, it would only happen sometimes, but now it seems to happen almost every time. It happens when I launch any of the games on Steam (Half-Life 2, Garry's Mod, etc.), BioShock, Crysis, and Call of Duty 2. The computer quickly restarts, so I can never have time to write down any of the details on the screen.

My computer is:
AMD X2 4400+
1GB RAM
Radeon X1900XT 512MB Card
ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe
Windows XP SP2

All of my drivers are up to date, and I am just confused on what to do. I don't know if this will help too much, but I included a HiJackThis log in case it can help. So what could I do to fix this problem?

Thanks in advance

About 3-4 months ago, my uncle placed a GeForce 9500GT video card. It worked nice for games like Dekaron,Rappelz,Oblivion but just about a week ago it crashed on COD2. I thought it was normal but it happened on Left 4 dead too. I started to get worried and thought it was normal but then it kept on crashing on Portal(1st stage, at around 20-30 seconds on the timer) and almost any game i borrow from my friends. It crashed on Warcraft 3, Overlord, Drift City(only in Undercity Mission). Im kinda worried now maybe you guys can help me.

It crashes and sometimes the sound loops but sometimes it doesnt. Im not sure if it's only the monitor because some of my games cant be shut by using ALT F4 and i cant check if it shuts down well. When i unplug, plug and turn it on, there are no warnings or things that say it recovered from an error. It just starts normally. Some people say i have to upgrade my Video card driver but im worried because when i installed a driver on my Laptop , i couldnt turn it on. SO WHAT DO I DO?

Hi everyone.

Now, I suppose you are not fond of people posting questions without posting the necessary specifications for you to make an informative answer. The computer I am having issues with will not show a picture on the screen, so until i dig up the reciept for the comp from somewhere the information will be very vague (I am posting just in case there are some "general" fixes/known problems).

The computer is a stationary Acer Aspire computer which was bought pre-build 5/6/7 years ago. Nvidia GPU, Intel quad Q*** CPU, Windows 7 (delivered with Vista). This computer has been with me through hell and high water, but yesterday decided to say nightnight.

The problem first occured when i downloaded and lauched Half Life 2. The game started up fine. I changed the resolution - everything was still working fine. I clicked "new game", and the screen went black (I am using a Phillips 37" flatscreen for monitor, so the message on the screen is "no video-input detected"). The sound also bugged up, and was giving me the sort of dubsted-like sound.

Nothing to do but hold the power button down to reset. The computer boots back up, but my desktop wallpaper is gone. I try again with HL2 - same thing again. Reboot once again. I got the game working by changing the resolution back.

Next problem happened with Far Cry 2. The game started up fine. I went to Options -> turned the volume down -> computer crash. Once again, reboot. The nex... Read more

Hello Kexmonster and welcome to TSF!

When you say you get no display, Do you get the boot screen with F2/F10 for BIOS options or is it always black from the moment you turn it on,

If its not try holding F8 when windows starts to boot, This will launch windows in safe mode using generic VGA drivers and then you can diagnose if its the driver or hardware problem

Alright I was playing through the walking dead game fine no problems then I had to go eat dinner so I paused the game (hit the esc key) and my monitor shut off and said no signal whenever I turned it back on. My mouse and keyboard also started shutting off and on and nothing I pressed (alt+F4, ctrl+alt+delete, etc) nothing got any response. So I shut off my computer booted it back up tried to play the same game again got the same issue. Then I tried to play something else and I got the same problem so whenever I launch any game my screen shuts off and computer essentially crashes. When Windows boots back up it says that it has recovered from a serious error similar to when you encounter a BSOD but doesn't ask you to send a report to MS.

Also whenever I come back from the error windows for some reason attempts and fails to re-install the wireless receiver for my 360 controller. However it works fine again once I unplug and plug it back in again.

So far here is what I've tried:
1. Uninstalling the game that started this.
2. Re-installing my video drivers.
3. Wiping my video drivers with driver cleaner in safe mode then re-installing my drivers.
4. Re-installing direct x using a setup file from a random steam game.
5. Doing a system restore from as far back as I had (April 25th)

Just purchased two Dell U2715H 27" monitors the other day and a Dell XPS8900 tower.

intel Core i7
16GB Ram
NVidia GTX 960
I am having an issue where when I launch two steam games I run into a crash. The games i'm trying to run are "Pure Pool" and "Pool Nation FX". Both games sometimes run without any issues, but occasionally when the game has ended the screen which I was gaming on will turn completely black, not even backlit, just black.

Also when I launch the games sometimes the monitor in which the game is running will be completely black, not even backlit, but i'll still be able to hear the sound.

What is really odd is that when I close the program such as the pool game, the black screen will still remain. (please note I can still use task manager on my other monitor).

Also, sometimes when I finish playing either game I won't get any black screen, but when I come to restart my computer one of my monitors will be black, not even backlit as before.

I can run DOTA 2 without any issues at all. This PC and monitors are both new purchased this week.

What happens is when any game is played after about 3 or 4 minutes of playing, the screen goes black with the audio skipping for about 20 seconds. I have updated all drivers on my PC including motherboard and video card. I have also tried rolling back my ati videocard drivers to 7.1. I have attached the minidumps, the first 2 were with the ati 7.11 drivers and the last is with 7.1.

What games are you trying to run? Your graphics card is a little out dated, you may just be trying to play games that it can't run.
But you could have some kind of hard ware failure. Like your PSU is dying or overheating issues. Things like that. Your system other than your graphics are really good. So it is either that or some sort of hard ware failure.

Troubleshooting -
- have gotten new drivers for graphics cards and monitors

As the title says, I tend to have crashes during the middle of a game. These bring me to a black screen, the audio turns off, and the lights on my keyboard stop working. Lowering graphic settings does nothing noticeable to help this either. There is no noticeable correlations between the crashes either. This happens in many downloaded games I play (The Forest, Titanfall, Battlefield, Counter Strike). Games that it doesn't happen in are Minecraft, League of Legends, and Smite. Before I continue on this post in leaving all of my computer specs, a reply would be appreciated to this so I know the thread will be continued, and so I know what types of information I should be sharing.

Hello, I am new here and I need some help.

Computer Specs:

Windows XP Pro SP2 Version 2002
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.40 GHz
1GB RAM

Chaintech NVIDIA GeForce 6600
Video BIOS: 5.43.02.66.01
256 MB
ForceWare:71.25

Power Supply: MAXTOTAL 480W

At first I had a FoxConn motherboard and games worked for about 5 hours before the computer shut off. I tried to turn it on again and did not work. I then removed the power supply cord and put it back in and the computer would turn on till windows and crash. So I kept it off for a couple of hours and turned it on again. This time everything loaded like normal, seemed like it overheated. I played for 5 hours and the same thing happened again. So I decided to get a new, more known, motherboard. The ASUS motherboard had the same issue and I ended up buying a huge fan for the CPU. This fan cooled it very well and I knew this because of the ASUSprobe program. I wish I could say this helped, except it did not at all. Even when I play 2D MMORPG games, it takes less than 30 minutes for it to turn off. I don't know what could be causing this, the RAM sticks? Video card? Power supply?

Any help is appreciated.

Hello all, I'm new to these forums hoping to use your expertise to help me with a problem I'm having with my new computer.

The specs of my computer are as follows

CPU MODEL: PC Pentium IV
CPU SPEED: 3000+

MEMORY: 512+MB
OS: Windows XP Service Pack 2
SOUNDCARD: Acer Labs Magic Series (On board motherboard)
VIDEOCARD: Gigabyte 256 Mb Gigabyte Radeon 9600 Pro

Ok here?s the problem/s:

I recently bought the new computer box while using the same LG CRT 775N monitor which is approximately 5 years old. When I first bought the computer, I initially had only the original windows XP without the service pack 2 installed and I was initially using the onboard VGA on the motherboard as opposed to the current radeon video card which I later bought.

After first purchasing the computer I wanted to play games such as Warcraft 3, Starcraft and Sims 2, but my hopes and dreams were cut short on the day I bought the computer. Without having the video card installed, when opening up the games, the whole computer would crash on the start-up screen or just after starting the game. There were basically two types of crashes: 1) the monitor would either turn completely black and turn off, and the sound would stop or 2) The game screen would freeze in the same frame and the sound would stop. In either case pressing alt-tab or ctrl-alt-del does nothing; the computer is essentially dead forcing me to reset the computer. However different things happen depending on how long... Read more

I have no idea when it started but as far as i can tell it began when i installed my new radeon 9600xt graphics card and A-bit NF7 series Motherboard.

In-game i can play great on lower graphics but my computer cannot handle the higher graphics settings and will just freeze up and go to a black screen and make that broken record audio sound like it was stuck on a track or something.
Also if i leave the game in a specific spot, like the start screen, it wiil not make it. The game will just freeze and lock-up, and i wasnt even playing a game yet.

The funny thing is that my desktop or movies do not get affected by this problem.

I cannot get the catylist utility center or control panel to work after i downloaded it from the website. I need to know if my graphics card is the problem, which others said it might be, or if its something else entirely.

Any help of anykind would be appreciated, Thnx.

A:Computer crashes repeatedly in-game.

Hi Ronin,
You need to get the ATI drivers to install properly before we can condemn the videocard. I'd also say once you have the drivers- be it CCC or CP version- you can fiddle around with ATI's SmartGART to change some settings and VPU recovery to restore stability in games with higher settings.

First things first, I'd recommend updating to the newer (but beta) NForce drivers. You can get the 6.37 beta's from:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=971

Go ahead and download these and install them before proceeding.

After installing these, get Driver Cleaner Pro at: http://www.drivercleaner.net
Install this, but do not run it. Instead, run it's Live Update and close it right afterwards.

From here, download the Catalyst drivers from ATI's website. For the control panel 5.11's, follow this link and download but do NOT INSTALL (yet)- just leave them handily on your desktop:
http://support.ati.com/ics/support/...fbe40c49a20e4c0aaa6f&accountID=737&deptID=894

Now perform the following steps:
1) Open Control Panel, Add-Remove Programs. Hunt down the following ATI uninstalls and perform each one IN THIS ORDER- but do NOT restart when prompted until the very last one. If you do not have one in the list, skip to the next one:
ATI Remote Wonder
ATI Multimedia Center
ATI DVD Decoder
ATI Catalyst Control Center
ATI Control Panel
ATI Display Driver
ATI Software Uninstall Utility

Okay so, I literally put my computer in for repair a few days ago and I just had it back yesterday, I tried to play a DayZ and Black Mesa several times, among other games and all of them crash. The premise is always the same, go onto game, wait a few minutes, maybe even seconds, game crashes and a patterned, chequered screen appears WHILE still in-game. I could even notice most of the game de-loading when it freezes. After that, most if not all the time, my monitor goes black and my computer restarts. It's really hard to explain so I hope you understand what I'm talking about. When I got it repaired last time I also bought new components, I have a new power supply and a brand new NVidia GTX 970, I'm on Windows 7 Professional.

My guess right off the bat.... It's incompatible with Windows 10.

You are trying to run a older game which was compatible with xp so most likely won't play well with 64bit OS which I'm guessing your windows 10 is?

You may try compatibility mode, if windows 10 has it.

A:Computer crashes when I play any game.

RE: nVidia BSOD nvlddmkm.sys - Depop
I have found and fixed the problem today. This is what appears to happen.
during the installation of the most current drivers 100.65 Vista, an OLD file
nvlddmkm.sys is copied into windows/system32/drivers and not the current one
in the install. As a result the new drivers are attempting to access a file
dated 11/2006 instead of 2/2007 ver 7.15.11.0065 which is in the newest WHQL
driver ver 100.65 vista 32.

Fix: Go to windows/system32/drivers and rename nvlddmkm.sys to
nvlddmkm.sys.old. Go to the nvidia directory and find the file nvlddmkm.sy_
and copy it to windows/system32. Using the cmd window (DOS box) type
EXPAND.EXE nvlddmkm.sy_ nvlddmkm.sys. When the expansion is complete, copy
the new nvlddmkm.sys to windows/system32/drivers and restart the computer.

Your computer should now work properly.

You will notice that any uninstall and reinstall of nvidia drivers will not
remove the old nvlddmkm.sys file and will not overwrite it with the newer
version. You have to do it manually. I do not know why this happens but who
cares as long it is fixed.
this from google

best best is to follow instructions above, download nvidia cleaner and newest driver and start over

My computer crashes every time i play a game (Counter Strike Source, Call of Duty, Starcraft 2), I cant open the task administrator because the whole computer freezes and I have to manually press the restart button to restart my computer. This has been happening for quite a while now. Im not sure about this, but a friend of mine told me that he had the exact same problem and it was due to the hardware not being compatible to each other. Any help would be very appreciated. :)

I recently bought a new gaming PC and it crashes when I'm playing games. Usually happens within the first 30 minutes to an hour, and not just the game, my entire computer crashes and I have to hit the power button. Sometimes It will restart and give me a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION.
When I check the reliability I get a few different types of errors.
IAStorData.Svc has stopped working
ASGT.exe has stopped working
COM Surrogate has stopped working
Sometimes windows only says it was not properly shut down, but this error is present with every other error.

Also, after every crash, my Ge Force graphic optimization has to be redone, and my in game settings seem to re set somtimes.

I have googled these and tried many different thing to try and fix my computer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my drivers, and I have also re sett my windows, among other things.

I am running windows 10 on a custom built computer from IBuyPower, I have a 3 year warranty and I am in the process of sending it back but I'm hoping It can be fixed before then.

PC Specs.
CPU: Intel® Core? i7-4790K Processor

POWER: 700W Standard 80 PLUS Bronze
STORAGE: 128GB SanDisk Z400S SSD + 1TB 7200RPM Hard Drive (yes two drives with the SSD being my C drive. It is about 30% full)

My temps for my CPU are never above 45 degreec C at load, same for my GPU.

The other times the screen freezes, nothing reacts anymore and the sounds loops over and over in a humming noise. The games i play are rather new,
Total war series, Medal of Honor (that new one), etc.
I also play less graphical games like Minecraft.

My 14 year old son has tried a few games on his computer. We just got it back from repair services once again from Cyber Pr Pc not sure if were are allowed to tpye the actual companies names on here..

We will never ever buy another computer from them this is our second pc from them. I told them I would contact my credit card company but the credit card company says their is nothing they can do for me..
We have sent it back in 3 times in a row and each time it comes back with something new wrong or has the same issue as before.
Anway everthing else seems to be running fine now even the first issue that we sent the computer in for to begin was finally fixed on the 3rd try. I can't remember what all they have replaced on it so far.
Now on to the gaming issue, he starts a game within about 5 minutes it freezes, crashes it's self or crashes the computer.
He started looking around online and tried several suggestions. he ran across one post that said it might be the power supply? I wanted to wait and get help here before we go out and buy a new one because I am not sending this thing back again to have something else go wrong 3 stinking times is enough.
I think the only two games he has installed since getting the computer back are Half-Life and Star Forge Alpha. I'd test it out right now but I don't want to have to deal with restarting the computer if it crashes.

The best thing you can do is find the minidumps in c:\windows\minidump zip them and attach them to your next post. It sounds driver related.
Anyhow you can follow the instructions here, that's generally most the info we'll need.

This has been happening for a few months now, but is happening more and more often. After a while of playing a game (Most recently Dead Rising 2, but has also happened in Starcraft 2 and Minecraft.) my computer will crash. The keyboard will turn off, and my speakers will make a a fairly loud, low pitched buzzing sound. The only way to fix it is a hard reboot. All my drivers are up to date, I just vacuumed my computer to make sure it isn't a dust issue, I ran a virus scan with no results, cleaned my registry, and the computer is in a cool, well ventilated room. This does not seem to happen while I'm surfing the web, just in games. Any help is appreciated.

Sorry if this is the wrong section, didn't think it belonged in games as it is an issue that affects my computer, not an issue in a specific game.

Hey guys I'm kind of new to the forums and hope you guys will answer this for me. A month or so now I've been having trouble with playing my games without them crashing every 10 minutes or so. The games I'm referring to are HL2, DoD: Source, CS: Source, and even games like Warcraft III that aren't nearly as graphically intensive as the source games.

Whats been happening is I play the game for what, 10 - 15 minutes and it crashes and only occasionally does it ever play for more than an hour. The screen goes black like there isn't a connection to my computer and a stuttering or static sounds comes out of the speakers. The computer doesn't restart when I press the restart button and I have to press and hold the power button so it shuts down completely before I can restart it.

An additional information is that I just reformatted my computer last night hoping it would've been fixed but it still happens. I've updated my ATI card and I'm up to date with windows update. Updated my mother board and processor as well too. So any help would be really nice, thanks guys.

My computer plays all other CD's fine, but it is these few that have caused it to crash, and would like to hear peoples thoughts.

this is often related to several programmes trying to access the disc all at once like WMP,Nero etc etc

Go to control panel, admin tools and select events. Will show you errors that occurred during the time of your failure. Also, are you monitoring your CPU temp? Sometimes can overheat and die. Use CpuTemp. Serach WEB and you will find. There is an x86 and x64 version.

The computer in question crashes every time a game (WoW, UT2004, Black and White 1&2 all tested) is loaded, after about 2-4 minutes. Usually works fine on other programs. Crashed once on load of a youtube page.

The crash goes like this: freezes, sound starts looping, screen goes black, then monitor shows it is receiving no signal. The sound looping does not occur in WoW.

Up to date drivers for both video and sound, ram passes memtest, PSU rated for 850 watts (way more than this needs).

Tried unplugging the sound card to see if it was the problem, and now it won't boot except in safe mode...

any suggestions?

My computer has been freezing for some time now while playing any game. It usually happens between 0-25 minutes of playing the game. I have talked to Dell and they have done everything they can (Reinstalled Windows 7, replaced heatsink, reinstalled all my drivers for me, wiped hard drive) for me and I'm not even under warranty so that's pretty cool. My temperatures are normal so it's not an overheating issue. The only thing that I think is left is that my motherboard is out of whack.

Another note to add is that it will sometimes get very laggy and the sound will get very techno sounding (if that makes sense) when I have my computer on my lap and it's not completely flat. It does not fully crash though when this happens and it will subside after about a minute.

I've been haveing some trouble with either game crashes or full bluescreen (error 101).
I WAS useing twin GeForce 9600GTs in SLI, I recently upgraded to a HD 7870.
The problem did not change, suggesting that video drivers are not the source... Although altering the drivers with the 9600GTs did seem to effect if the game crashed or full bluescreen crash.
So basicly, the PC works fine untill I play a game (high end and/or minecraft... simple games do not trigger it) at that point, you are on borrowed time. Around 15-120 min. into gameplay, either the game will crash (fatal error bug or no bug report) OR the PC will freeze briefly followed by a blue screen BCCode 101. (Windows 7 64)

I did a simple RAM check, but I did not leave it running for long. I have 3 sticks of 2GB in there, and haveing removed one at a time did not effect the problem. (IE: I took out each stick, leaveing 2 in for a quick and easy method to find a possable faulty RAM chip).

Thus far, it would seem that the CPU in at haveing timeing issues with a core.
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6400+ 3.2 GHz

Could it be overheating? Everything seems to work fine untill I start a game, then it crashes out roughly 30 min into playing. I'm consitering removeing the heat sink, reapplying the thermal paste, and checking if that has any effect. This much I am qualified to do; but is there a way to monitor processor heat levels durring gameplay (I'm sure standard bios heat checks would not show problems). ... Read more
