Thinkpad X1 Carbon Display Problem

Q: Thinkpad X1 Carbon Display Problem

I am having a strange problem displaying an image on the monitor of my new Lenovo X1 Carbon laptop [Type: 20FB-002LUS S/N R9-0N7 ]. I am running a robotics graphic program developed by Carnegie Mellon University to teach middle school students how to write programs to run the small robot shown in the attached picture labeled ?VEX IQ Robot?. I have attached a picture showing a sample of the program displayed either on my HP ENVY desktop computer or my HP laptop (both running Windows 7 ? Home Premium). The picture is labeled ?Screen shot of IQ program that looks normal?. The program shows evenly spaced graphic lines with text centered vertically within the lines. This how the output should look according the programming manual from Carnegie. When I run the program on my Lenovo laptop (also running Windows 7 ? Home Premium) I get the image on the monitor show in the attachment labeled ?VEX IQ Display Problem?. Each line is moved down overlapping the top of the line below. In addition, the text is not centered vertically in the lines. The text is also moved down to the bottom of the line. The text is also bolded. The graphics is pushed together without spacing. The text also appears somewhat enlarged and bolded. The distortion is large enough to make the information on the monitor difficult to use. Do you have any idea what could be causing this problem? The Lenovo monitor have any adjustments that would produce a normal screen? Thank you, Robert Springer, PhDVEX IQ Display ProblemScreen shot of IQ program that looks normalVEX IQ Robot

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

X1 Carbon 6th Gen - (Type 20KH, 20KG) Laptop (ThinkPad) on ThinkPad Pro Dock.  I have a secondary display (connected with DisplayPort).  When the battery is charging, the secondary display works properly.  As soon as the battery is fully charged (100%), the secondary display disconnects and goes black (no signal detected).  The power is still on the the display.  The only way to get the secondary display to reconnect is to unplug the power supply from the dock, then plug it in again.  Has anyone else experienced this?

I have connected a Thinkpad X1 carbon (model:20BS0057AD) to ThinkPad OneLink Dock which further connects to a ThinkVision Pro2820 28-inch LCD monitor using DisplayPort. In order for the display to work through the dock I have to power down and power up the Dock and Monitor for the monitor to receive display signal. Once its working and I disconnect the dock from the laptop and reconnect it back, the monitor will not come on and remain in low power mode with amber light. I then have to go through the power down and power up cycle for the monitor to display laptop output signal or else it will remain in low power mode. Previously was using a Thinkvision L2251p monitor and never faced any such issue. Is there a fix for this issue

I recently got a 4th gen X1 carbon, but I noticed some resolution/display issues with certain programs. I tried running Autodesk Vault, but when the program opens it looks like this:The resolution is low grade and is definitely not displaying properly. But it seems like the fill-in blanks and buttons are in the correct spot because when I hover the mouse where they should be I could click on them. I don't think its a problem with the program file because I used the files to download onto another computer and it works fine.  The resolution also looks terrible for the home screen of League of Legends, but during gameplay it is perfectly fine. Does anyone know how to fix this??

If you have one of the high-definition screen, you are seeing the dark side of screens denser than FHD.  Some applications have made no attempt to become compatible.  All I can suggest is to contact the software publisher.  I can say that over the past year, I have seen the nubber of incompatible applications has gone down.

I have owned this 6th gen x1 carbon for little over a year. I had some random times when the area to the top left of the machine was very hot, abnormally so.  I got a stop code error a month ago, and a few hours before that the laptop started to overheat a bunch and run very quickly out of battery.  I turned it off and on again and it fixed itself.  Flash forward a month, it does it all day long agian but this time it runs itself into auto kill mode.  I power cycle'd 5 more times before I resolved the issue, and this time i watched "speedfan" and noticed the cores were just fine in temp, it was my HD that was HOT. After the fact, my HDMI nor two type C ports work for connecting to displays, although the power cord still charges the laptop.  I think i'm FUBAR, but as of this moment i bought a wireless adapter to try and creating a work around.  that is until the next overheat session happens and this time my entire graphics card blows up! haha just kidding, but serioulsy lenovo plz send me a new laptop at this point.  I had the screen replaced in December 2018 and now this?

Hi guys, I'd like to buy an X1 Carbon 6th gen from the Italian shop and I have a question about the display (and the related camera): it's a detail, but the machine is pricey and I'd feel more confident by knowing exactly what I'm going to buy. The problem may just be an incomplete label in the site, but here it is: when I customize the machine in the US site (https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-x/ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-6th-Gen/p/22TP2TXX16G), I find that among the options there is the "14.0" HDR WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS glossy with Dolby Vision, 500 nits" option, which is my choice. Now, in the Italian site (https://www3.lenovo.com/it/it/laptops/thinkpad/x-series/ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-6th-Gen/p/22TP2TXX16G?cid...) I just read "IPS WQHD da 14" (2.560 x 1.440), glare, 500 nit": no mention of "Dolby Vision". I wonder: is this because there are maybe royalties issues in the Dolby Vision firmware/software outside the US, so that effectively it's a different thing; or it's just that they did not include that label, but the WQHD 500 nits display already implies it? If I lookup the models specs at http://psref.lenovo.com, the label for the display is just 14" HDR WQHD (2560x1440) IPS Glossy, for both US or EMEA. So, it's just a difference in wording? Also, I don't understand if the IR camera can be selected with this display type, or not. The option just says "720p camera", and there is no customization choice, in both the US and IT sites. The onl... Read more

A:Thinkpad Carbon X1 Display BLANK after Update - External Monitor Works

I spent a day working on an issue and want to share to save folks time.  Bottom line, Intel Graphics Drivers WDDM 1.0, 1.1., 1.2, 1.3 automatically updated with Windows and broke the system. BIOS and Lenovo splash screen showed and safe mode worked fine showing this was not a hardware issue.  Windows began to load and the screen went black.  I connected an external monitor via HDMI, pressed power for 2 seconds to put the machine to sleep, pressed power again for 2 seconds and it woke up on the 2nd monitor. In Device Manager, the 2nd (HP w2007) monitor showed up and there was no mention of the laptop physically connected display. I reinstalled Windows 10 and all was well until the auto-update occurred and I had the same issue.I installed Windows 7 and all was well until I installed all updates, same issue. I didn't think this was a display adapter problem because the 2nd monitor worked just fine and it was the monitor that didn't show in Device Manager.  Alas, my assumption was incorrect. After HOURS of selecting which Windows 7 updates to install, nearly 180, I finally narrowed it down.  I thought it was a Windows problem, turns out this was an Intel Graphics driver issue. SOLUTION: I used Revo Uninstaller to remove the Intel Graphics driver program and the system recovers.  Sadly, in both Windows 10 and WIndows 7, the auto updates would put the drivers back and the same problem recurred.  I was finall... I'm trying to connect my X1 Carbon (4th Gen) to a monitor using HDMI. I have a Lenovo OnePlus dock, which has DisplayPort and VGA outputs but no HDMI. My monitor has VGA, HDMI, and DVI inputs but no DP. I've tried two DP to HDMI adapters (one passive, one active) but neither will work -- I get neither video nor audio. I've already tried updating the BIOS and the graphics driver. I tested this setup on an X230, which also has a DP output. That didn't work, either. I assumed the monitor's DVI input or the cable were bad -- until I tried setting the X230's BIOS display config to use DP during startup. Suddenly, the output worked -- until the boot sequence ended. Then it stopped. This indicates that the DP output on the X230 works, the HDMI input on the monitor works, and the cable and adapter work. So why can't I see video after the machine boots? I can't try this test on the X1. I was only able to get back into the X230's BIOS by connecting the monitor to an HDMI cable (my Pro Dock has an HDMI output). But the X1 and dock lack HDMI connections, so if I think I'll be unable to get back into the BIOS if I set the boot display to digital. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I have a ThinkPad X1 Carbon 3rd generation. Two days ago, I have updated the BIOS to the latest version 1.12. The installation went well and I successfully booted into Windows 10 with no issues. However, the fan was not working anymore. I did not notice this until the laptop was extremely hot (which is very unusual for this laptop under low/medium load). In particular, I was just running a "disk cleanup" using the native Windows tool and after 5 minutes I decided to kill the process (this operation usually takes 1-2 minutes). My feeling was that due to the temperature the cpu was in throttling. At that moment, I noticed that the fan was not active. After a shutdown, the fan was again working. However, I noticed that the fan kicks in much more often than it was used to. For this reason, I did two things:- I have downgraded the BIOS to 1.11: BIOS 1.12 updated the CPU microcode, I am not sure that the microcode was downgraded as well when I downgraded the BIOS. - I have run the "Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool": I was afraid that the high temperatures may have damaged the cpu. The tool reported that the maximum temperature of the cpu during the benchmark was always safely within the expected threshold and all the tests were passed. Now, I still can see that the fan kicks in much more often than usual. I have noticed, using sensors under Ubuntu 15.10, that every time there is a very short burst/peak of... Read more

My Thinkpad X1 Carbon 4th 20FB with Win10 was working fine with Photoshop when it had Intel HD Graphics Driver - 10 [64] V21.20.16.4550 Using the Lenovo Companion, I let it upgrade the graphics driver to V21.20.16.4718 back in late July.  Immediately after this upgrade, Photoshop no longer rendered images properly, making it useless.  Images that are opened do not appear on the screen and the UI is jumbled.  I reverted to driver v21.20.16.4550 through Companion as that version was still listed, and everything was fine again.  I noticed the other day upon opening Photoshop that I had the rendering problem again.  I checked my graphics driver version in Device Manager, and somehow it updated to v22.20.16.4785 (although I cannot figure out how, as Lenovo Companion does not show an update to this version in its history, and neither does Windows Update). All I want to do is rollback my graphics driver to v21.20.16.4550, which I know works.  But this is not an option any longer in Companion, and this version is not present on the Lenovo website either.  Obtaining this version through 3rd party websites is not Lenovo specific and refuses to install. Please provide me a link or a place to go where I can get Intel HD Graphics Driver - 10 [64] V21.20.16.4550

Hi, I have a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen which came with the USB-C docking station. I have a USB headset (Logitech), plugged into the docking station, which I use for Skype calls. The laptop runs Win 10 Pro. The problem is this: I'll start a Skype call with the audio routed to the headset, both speaker and microphone. The headset is also configured in Windows Control Panel as the default speaker. A minute or so into the call, the speaker audio will drop out and revert to the laptop's built-in sound card. Even though Skype is set to route the audio to the headset, the audio doesn't make it to the headset, it just goes out the laptop analog audio. I get the idea that this is a problem with the DisplayLink driver for the docking station. I tried updating the driver but it says that I have the latest version (even though it's dated 2006?!?).  Any ideas?  Thanks! - bill.

Hello there!I've been having some issues with my screen on 2 gen X1 Carbon - it freezes and sometimes it starts to flash at the edges after I close my notebook and open it again, so I have to try to move it into the right position so it can unfreeze. Sometimes pressing on the certain places helps, at the bottom of the display near these dark lines. First I thought that the problem is in the display cable, so I installed a new one, but it didn't help. I noticed that touchscreen works fine even when display is blacked out. What should I do, maybe someone had some simular issues? Sorry for pics quality, I can attach better ones if needed. Thanks for any help!

First of all, let me explain the problem from the beginning. When everything is normal on the computer in the morning, when I run the computer in the morning, the screen is black, but I noticed that the computer is working. When I look carefully, the screen is black, but I saw it. I saw the screen is distorted. I put the screen back on the screen and I saw that it was black. The screen was showing for fifteen minutes before but now it has not. The screen that I removed from the working computer is black screen and when I look carefully, something appears.

Hi, Since I brought the laptop I have always had an issue with fixing the screen brightness. The meter would change on pressing the buttens but not screen brightness. Now, (may be after some automatic updates) my screen is completely off - I get a full black screen. I am able to access my laptop screen by connecting an external monitor and duplicating my screen. I have tried to reset the computer using recovery options but even that doesn't work. What should I do? Thank you,

HI everyone, I have a question regarding SIM in x1 carbon. I am not very good with technology, so I don`t know if my x1 carbon has a working SIM slot. It has a slot for SIM card but when I put it on, it doesn`t respond anything, like `detecting` or something like that. My question is: does x1 Carbon (Model 20A8-S00600) has a working SIM card slot. If it does, how can I make it functional. If it doesn`t what do I need to do/buy to make it functional.  Thanks,Kushtrim

A:Thinkpad x1 carbon SIM

Hi and welcome, kushtrimYour laptop is "WWAN ready" only, i.e.has the SIM card holder, the SIM card reader and WWAN antennas installed. WWAN modem wasn't factory preinstalled, that's a cause you don't see anything once SIM card is installed. So, to use laptop WWAN capabilities, purchase and install WWAN modem - 3G or 3g/LTE.

Greetings, My X1 Carbon Thinkpad will not connect to wi-fi either several times a week, or at worst, several times a day. I can try to get online with the Thinkpad and the tiny orange symbol is lit on the wi-fi icon. Clicking on that, the wi-fi message says, "not connected."  Sitting in the same chair, I pick up my Samsung Note tablet, and it effortlessly connects to my home network. My phone connects and my Kindle connects. Everything connects except the Thinkpad. At this moment, the X1 Carbon Thinkpad is connected, and I am typing on it in this forum. But, in an hour, I could pick it up, and it will not be connected. The "Windows Network Diagnostics" will tell me "Problem found." The explanation will be "Problem with wireless adapter or access point."  Then it will explain: "Not fixed."   Any suggestions?   Best regards,Bill Phillips, Durham, North Carolina
