semaphore timeout period

Q: semaphore timeout period

Hi, I use Windows XP Pro and I am getting this error message in the system event log everytime I log in. Now I only get one, but just recently there are like 3 or 4 in a row many times during the initial log in to the internet network.

I have tried to search everywhere and google and yahoo for an answer but never was able to get a clear solution.

Luckily, I am able to get online just fine but the idea of this showing up constantly bothers me. It was fine, for about 4 months it stopped showing up after I did no changes to my system but its now back.

Also for a while I was getting something about user cancelled something but I have not seen that in a long time.

I tried to unplug the modem and cables to reset the IP , but that doesnt help. Also not that my service uses a Dynamic IP and I cant switch to static IP.

Its called Event: 1003 Source: DHCP

Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address ------------. The following error occurred:
The semaphore timeout period has expired. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

Thanks for your help in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hello again...

dang this thing is a pain!!

new issue today, trying to save a tiny .rtf file to external USB drive, and get "semaphore timeout period has expired" message and have to save to local drive instead. also get the message if i drag and drop into the desired location.

perhaps related to the issue i occasionally have: the machine loses connection to the external drive and either the folder shows empty (it's not!) or doesn't show as even being connected. little blue light on the drive will sometimes go out, sometimes not, but still no access...

EDIT: i have two verbatim USB drive attached... one or the other of them will occasional disappear from This PC and when i look at device manager there is an error on that drive. i disconnect and reconnect and the drives show up and the error in device manger goes away... there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why this happens. when it does and i try to save something to the drive, that's when i get the "semaphore timeout period has expired"

i have tried to update drivers using windows search online and it always says i have the best drivers loaded....

the drives have been checked for errors and windows reports none... there is still quite a bit of available space on them (80+ gigs on each) and when they are connected and live, i can access files with no problem... it just decides to seemingly drop the drive randomly...

thanks for any help...

When deleting a file from a local drive, that I have permissions to the local folder on, I'm getting the Semaphore timeout period has expired error.

I've tried to make it as simple as possible for the system, after doing a clean boot, and it still failing, I'm currently in safe mode, without networking, and am still seeing the error.  Anybody have a suggestion or work around?  Files in other
folders are not having this issue.

I maintain some software that makes a tcp socket connection to a different piece of software and sends data back and forth (pretty basic stuff there). We use boost asio to handle reading and writing of data over the socket connection. We have a client that
has deployed this software on Windows7. The client has been having issues with our software not being able to maintain a reliable socket connection. One thing I have noticed is that quite often the networking callback are receiving the error: The semaphore
timeout period has expired.

This error is not coming from anywhere in our code (or the boost code). I've done some research on it and I found a Microsoft Knowledge base article on this error for Windows XP (support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/325487). I've seen a few people ask questions about
this error on Windows7, but they're all in regards to moving files to different drives, nothing regarding network connections.

What does this error mean in regards to Windows7? Does the knowledge base article I mentioned still apply to Windows7?

So I did a search and found nothing definitive regarding this particular error in my application.

I have a Dell laptop with an i7 processor, an SSD drive and 8g of ram, running Win7 Pro 64 bit.

I put a 128G micro sd card into the sd card adapter and slapped into the slot. When I try to move files to the card, I get the error.

I formatted the card just for grins. It won't format NTFS, but it did format exFat @ default allocation unit size.

The only file that didn't copy was one that's 21 megs in size. Everything else was smaller and copied over fine.

Donno what to do from here. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Greetings,

My environment is: Win'7, Visual Studio 2010, C#

There is another message on these forums with almost exactly the same title. It's closed, so I couldn't post there.

I'm getting that exact same response from Win'7 in a try /catch scheme.

i.e., "...The semaphore timeout period has expired..."

I am quite confident that the serial port is really there, as he will open and will transfer data from time to time.

It's the whims of the hardware that have me so confused.

The exact same code worked perfectly last night. In fact, it has worked for weeks.

The statement which I believe is causing the error is...
TheUsersChosenSerialPort.Open();

Much like the other thread mentioned, the port is a BlueTooth connector, and Win'7 is reporting him okay, and so on.

I welcome responses from those with useful knowledge on this topic.

Hello Ady,

Thanks for your post!

This issue may be a little complex and require some steps to troubleshoot:

1.    Update the driver of wireless network adapters in both of your computers.
2.    Temporarily disable all the firewalls and anti-virus applications, then check the issue again.
3.    To exclude the factors from other services and applications, do a clean boot to check the issue and perform Step 4.(KB929135) How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vistahttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;929135
4.    With clean boot, try to apply the hotfixes contained in the following KB articles:(KB932045) Error message when you use a network connection to copy a large file from one Windows Vista-based computer to another Windows Vista-based computer: "The connection has been lost"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932045(KB932063) Several problems occur on a Windows Vista-based computer when you work in a wireless network environment
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932063
If problem still persists after steps above, this issue is very possibly due to network devices or configurations, please let me know:

1.    Whether this problem occurs in wired network?
2.    If strengthening the network signals, the problem can be changed?
3.    What size of files will lead to this error.
4.    Does this error terminate the copy process?

This error, "the semaphore timeout period has expired" keeps popping up when I transfer files over a network. They'll go for about half, and then this error pops up and it's over.

How do I fix that?

A:Vista: "The Semaphore Timeout Period Has Expired"

Is this a Linksys Router?

Wired or WIFI?

Are you using an Internet Security Suite or ZoneAlarm?
This may also be thr problem....
This can happen when the total path length of the source file
and the total path length of the destination file are greater than a given
value, 128 I believe. When this occures in windows, it results in a Path
Too Deep error.

Good Morning All,

I am having issues installing Windows updates, they have been failing upon install for the past 3-4 months.  I get the error code 80070079, "The Semaphore timeout has expired".  So I tried backing up my data to just wipe it and reload the OS, the backup fails as well, same error message.  Then I tried moving files manually to an external drive and that as well timeouts on the larger files.  I have searched the Internet and it many people seem to have this issue and it relates to the network adapter, but I am not trying to do anything over the network (Updates are already downloaded just waiting to install), so I feel it is something else.  Does anyone know of a fix or possible solution?  I searched semaphore through the registry and there are a lot of entries, but not sure if i need to change any of them or not?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I have x1 Desktop and x1 Laptop.
They are both on Win XP Pro and are fully updated.
I have always networked them using Cat5 cables and an active hub and had a shared Internet connection on the Desktop and had no massive problems.

one day recently I plugged in the Laptop and turned it on. Not only could I not connect to the net but neither PC could access the other.

I have run the Network setup wizard on the Desktop and then on the Laptop and managed to mess with things so the ICS is now working again. But neither PC can see the other.

I get the error message:

\\Desktop is not accessible. (sometimes this part says: 'MSHome is not accessible')

You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found. (sometimes this part says: 'the semaphore timeout period has expired' or 'The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available')

There is only one user on each PC, ME.

I have opened command prompt and ran ipconfig and then ran 'ping'. Both PC's can ping each other with no problems but I can still not access files on each PC. I HAVE shared folders on both and they should be seen.

Hello Everyone,
I have an on going ATA deployment, where the customer wants to know, the possibility of having the logs / event retained for 1 year and an approximate idea on the impact of storage and any limitations for MongoDB.
As per the ATA sizing tool and article the requirement of ATA center falls in the below specification.

Packets per second from all DCs

CPU (cores*)

Memory (GB)

Database storage per day (GB)

Database storage per month (GB)

IOPS**

400,000

12

96

120

3,600

2,000 (2,500)

So we have a approx. storage requirement of 3.6 TB per month, so how long are the logs/event on ATA center kept by default and can we change the retention period for the same.
Thank you,

Somewhere between you and 216.109.112.135 about 1 packet in 6 is being lost or delayed beyond ping's threshold. Maybe the destination site is busy, maybe your ISP is busy, maybe general network congestion. Not desirable, but not so weired either.

Hello guys, just read my story this is all true.
Okay so I wanted to get a better graphics card so I got this exact card
Newegg.com - EVGA 01G-P3-1370-TR GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

and my computer is a Dell Studio XPS 8100 Service Tag is C06PNL1 for the computer

but anyways, the graphics card I bought fits inside but the problem is that it has two PCI adapters and my PSU wont support that
My PSU is 350 watts at the moment

and I was wondering, is it okay to upgrade my PSU to like a 600 watt PSU?
this is the one i want
CompUSA.com | CUL-650B | Coolmax CUL-650B Power Supply

dell told me that it could screw up other parts of my computer and void warranty

but should I get it or not? All I want to do is game on my new graphics card DX

A:Need Some Help Period

It says here:

GeForce GTX 460 1GB Power Consumption and Thermals | bit-tech.net

that the power consumption of a Windows 7 system with that graphics card is 250 to 270 watts at load and about 136 at idle.

Dell generally uses decent power supplies, so your PSU may handle it OK. Can you get an adapter so your PSU will have 2 and match the video card?

Dell used to use some oddball connectors, so I don't know whether an ordinary ATX PSU will necessarily hook up correctly in your model 8100.

But 600 watts is more than enough.

I have a HP ProBook 6550b laptop. It has the wide keyboard with the number keys on the right (as well as across the top row). The del key is also on the right. The del key has a period in what would normally be the shift or uppercase position. Whenever I try to delete a character it inserts a period instead of deleting. It will still do this regardless of whether number lock is on or off and regardless of whether shift is used or not.
Does anyone know how I can get it to delete as it normally should??
NOTE: A similar question to this was also posted by someone else in a previous thread but the solution offered, ie, toggling the number lock, did NOT work.
Thanks

My folders with period (.) on its name will lost the folder name after the period. But the folder name itself doesn't change
Sometime after reboot the problem is gone but will back after some time

Example:

Note the Type and the name. They should be "NokiaCooker_2.9" and "NaviFirm+ 1.7"

In file inside the folder properties, the location shows the right path, but in folder path not (when in edit mode however, it shows the right path until I press enter to exit edit mode)

same with above

Thanks.
Sorry for bad English and explanation

A:Folder Name after period is gone

I'm confused.

Would you give me one and only one example of folder name which is not appearing correctly?

A smart move is to never use a period in a folder name.

Use the period for its original purpose, that is, as the separator between folder and extension or put another way as the first character of the "extension".

Gaming LCD's

I am wondering what the best lcd monitor for gaming is. I am hooking this up to dual 7800 gt's and want to take advantage of this by buying a premium monitor. I know that for gaming lower response time is better and that native resolution should be relatively high, any help would be appreciated. By the way, im looking to spend around $500.

A:The BEST gaming lcd...period

For $500 you could easily buy any high-end 17" LCD. And for 19", $500 will get you a pretty good one, if not a great one. LCD prices are changing so rapidly.

But if you get a 19", make sure it suits some basic things first, like the type of connection. Is it DVI? Does it match your vid card outputs? Getting a digital signal is the first thing to look for. Then make sure it handles your favorite resolution. For 19" this would be like 1280x1024 or even 1600x1200.
After this, the best thing to do is find a site that runs comparisons on LCDs. Select the 3 to 5 or so that you like best and compare side to side. You'll see who has quicker response times, brighter picture, more features etc...
PCWorld has such comparrisons, check tomshardware.com, then just do some googling.

Couldn't say what is the "BEST..period". Some people would say only CRTs can be the best.

Hi I have requests for prints of my paintings
Can you advise if Canon ip4200 printer inks are lightfast and have a decent lifetime.

Thanks

A:lightfast period

From Canon:
A system for long-lasting photos.
The Canon ChromaLife100 system combines the PIXMA iP4200 Photo Printer's FINE print head technology and newly developed inks with select Canon photo papers, with results rivaling that of conventional photos. These beautiful photos will also last up to 100 years when stored in an archival quality photo album4.Click to expand...

Mind you, this is only with genuine Canon papers and ink. Any other combinations won't be a guarantee they'll last 100 years.

Hey all. I haven't been here in awhile and the reason why I'm here is very very curious. You see... I'm a pretty techy guy and can fix things pretty easily, but this one has me baffled. First, I'll give you my computer specs so I can break this down as fast as possible.

MoBo: MSI A75-G55 Military Class II
RAM: 8GB Kingston HyperX Genesis DDR3 1600MHz (4GB x 2)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0GBs
CPU: AMD A6-3650 Quad Core FM1 Socket Series
PSU: 650w 4-pin connection

Now let's move onto the problem... Whenever I power on my computer, it won't boot. At all. Not even to the intro screen showing you the motherboard label. Can't go into BIOS. ANYTHING. The curious thing about it is that I was using a Gigabyte A75-UD2H board and that's when it started, so I got a new board, yet it persists! I still cannot boot into BIOS and I know if you have a faulty HDD, it will at least recognize the MoBo first then tell you it can't find the HDD, which spins up fine and works perfectly... The CPU isn't burnt out or anything and I just really can't figure this thing out! If anyone could help me out it would be MUCH appreciated! I want to stop tearing my hair out and get off my sister's computer as SOON AS POSSIBLE! Thank you so much!

Alright.

So I've been asked to wipe an XP Home computer and replace it with XP Professional, and up until now, there have been no problems. Well, it hasn't taken long for one to crop up.

There are no connections listed in the Control Panel. Not one. And I haven't the foggiest idea on how to set one up (Networking is not my strong suit).

Anyway, the laptop is normally connected on a DSL connection.

Any ideas to get it working again?
